Description: A chronology of the Apollo spacecraft development and production program is presented. The subjects discussed are: (1) defining contractural relations, (2) developing hardware distinctions, and (3) developing software ground rules. Illustrations, drawings, and photographs are used extensively to supplement the technical writing. Descriptions of life support systems, communication equipment, propulsion systems, control devices, and spacecraft components are provided.

Description: The environmental conditions to which a large glide reentry vehicle such as the space shuttle is subjected is discussed. A comparison is made with the state of the art for materials and structures to meet this environmental threat. The options that are available are stressed as are the areas where additional research and development is required.

Description: Problems involved in the handling and transportation of finished space vehicles from the factory to the launch site are presented, in addition to recommendations for properly accounting for in space vehicle structural design, adverse interactions during transportation. Emphasis is given to the protection of vehicle structures against those environments and loads encountered during transportation (including temporary storage) which would exceed the levels that the vehicle can safely withstand. Current practices for verifying vehicle safety are appraised, and some of the capabilities and limitations of transportation and handling systems are summarized.

Description: A stochasitc model of the atmosphere between 30 and 90 km was developed for use in Monte Carlo space shuttle entry studies. The model is actually a family of models, one for each latitude-season category as defined in the 1966 U.S. Standard Atmosphere Supplements. Each latitude-season model generates a pseudo-random temperature profile whose mean is the appropriate temperature profile from the Standard Atmosphere Supplements. The standard deviation of temperature at each altitude for a given latitude-season model was estimated from sounding-rocket data. Departures from the mean temperature at each altitude were produced by assuming a linear regression of temperature on the solar heating rate of ozone. A profile of random ozone concentrations was first generated using an auxiliary stochastic ozone model, also developed as part of this study, and then solar heating rates were computed for the random ozone concentrations.

Description: The author has identified the following significant results. Results of the analysis of the initial sample of ERTS-1 data indicate that the MSS-5 spectral band is the most useful for detecting and mapping mountain snow cover. At the ERTS-1 resolution, snow cover can be readily detected in the MSS-5 band and can be distinguished from clouds. Snow line elevations have been mapped for five mountain areas. In one case for the Salt-Verde watershed in Arizona good agreement is observed between the location of the snow line as mapped from the ERTS-1 data and as depicted on an aerial snow survey chart compiled a week earlier. Examination of data from the Arctic has revealed that multispectral data can provide information on glacial conditions that cannot be ascertained from observations in a single spectral band.

Description: Since the launch of TIROS I in 1960, the utility of remote sensing from orbit for monitoring the earth's weather has been conclusively demonstrated. The past decade has also seen progress in applying remote sensing to the observation of terrestrial features. Variations in snow and ice cover, surface water, river and lake turbidity, and other hydrological features are now being accurately observed from orbital altitudes by the Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS-1), NOAA-2, and Nimbus 5. Satellite visible, infrared and microwave measurements will be continued over the next few years, with improved spatial and spectral accuracy, by Skylab, ERTS-B, and Nimbus F. Delineations of soil and snow moisture variations, thermal patterns in lakes and estuaries, and regions of heavy precipitation are among the results anticipated.

Description: Consideration of the feasibility of a 'sortie' type mission in which a manned laboratory is carried into near-earth orbit for a 7- to 30-day mission and is then returned to earth for reconfiguration and subsequent reflight. The fundamental difference in approach between the proposed Spacelab and concepts previously considered for space stations is that the spacelab will remain attached to the Shuttle Orbiter during its entire mission in space. An important trend in the design approach is the introduction of structural modularity of the Spacelab. Another factor which has been a significant design consideration is the need to properly balance the Shuttle and Spacelab configuration over a wide range of aerodynamic regimes and landing conditions. Also considered are the requirements which may be placed on the laboratory by potential users in fields of science and space applications.
