Beschreibung: Reciprocating motion mechanisms, in which a mass with large gaps can be driven with almost uniform speed, are investigated. A single-mass system with dry friction, the motion of which is restricted by two stops, is examined. The system is put into motion by kinematic disturbances through a flexible link. Periodic modes of movement, under conditions in which the disturbance arises from two impacts on the mass (from the right and left stops) are examined. Primary attention was given to irregularities in the course of the mass. The shock interaction of the mass with the stop was accounted for by the shock speed restoration coefficient R. The shock-frequency characteristics of the free shock vibrations were determined. Expressions were obtained which define the transitional process. The phase and velocity of several succeeding shocks were determined. After taking account of the conditions of the steady mode of movement, velocities and phases in the steady mode of movement were obtained.

Beschreibung: The criteria for the selection of dynamic characteristics of flexible centrifugal-inertial couplings are discussed. The basic properties considered are: (1) vibration isolation, (2) vibration quenching, and (3) transmission properties. It is stated that the most promising couplings are those with a nonlinear relation between the magnitude of the torque transmitted and the magnitude of deformation of the coupling. The efforts of various investigators are briefly analyzed. Mathematical models are developed to show the relationships of the parameters involved.

Beschreibung: Torsional vibration systems, with finite numbers of degrees of freedom are investigated. In designing such systems, it is important to select parameters, so that the frequency spectrum of the natural vibrations is beyond the limits of the resonance danger region. In the case when the system has a large number of degrees of freedom, calculation of its natural frequencies, as well as tuning out the resonance danger zones is laborious. When the system being investigated has one group symmetry or another, solution of the problem mentioned above is facilitated, as a consequence of breaking down the frequency equations into several, which are smaller in size. An algorithm is given for tuning out the natural frequency spectrum from the forbidden region, by means of varying the rigidity of systems having group symmetries or group quasi-symmetries.

Beschreibung: A method for acoustical diagnostics of pumps is described which consists of taking sonograms of the pump, by means of an audio spectrograph. In distinction from usual analyzers, the spectrograph makes it possible to obtain a three-dimensional image of the signal being analyzed, in which its frequency-amplitude characteristics developed over time are depicted with a resolving power of 0.004 sec. As an example, a sonogram of an electrically driven pump, in the 40-4000 Hz frequency range, is presented. The amplitude ratios are determined on the sonogram by the contrast of individual contours, with an accuracy of 6 db.

Beschreibung: An automatic diagnostic device for monitoring the condition of tractor transmission gears is described. The structural noise spectrum of the gearshift box and rear axle of the tractor were analyzed in a digital computer, by an algorithm based on the multiple correlation method. The optimum assembly of operating frequencies, by use of which the errors in measurement were minimized, was selected from the entire frequency spectrum. Selected frequencies are necessary for choosing the measurement range of the diagnostic device. It turned out that, to obtain a relative error of no more than 2%, it was sufficient to use two filters, vibrating only at the frequencies carrying the maximum data of the mechanical parameter being investigated. The measurement system consists of frequency-selection filters, amplifiers and quadratic detectors, at the outlets of which constant voltages are created, which are proportional to the signal level at the frequencies selected.

Beschreibung: The application of a vibroacoustical method for analyzing the vibration characteristics of textile machines is discussed. A drawing of a typical mechanism is provided to show the sources of vibration. The conditions under which the machine operates are defined. An accelerometer is used as a sensor. The point of installation is selected so that a dip in the frequency characteristic of the vibrating part, on which the sensor is installed, in the region of the maximum acoustical signal. This allows for a drop in the vibrations for those values of the gap in the mechanism which amount to 10 to 20 db.

Beschreibung: The results of a statistical analysis of the vibrations of the experimental RS-1 reducer stand, with a spiral-gear transmission, operating on a closed circuit, are presented. The analysis was carried out on the Minsk-2 and Minsk-32 digital computers, with two-channel analog-digital converter, built in the Institute of the Science of Mechanics. Two-dimensional distribution patterns, conditional dispersions and dispersion ratios were calculated. The octave-band-filtered first harmonics of the tooth frequency f sub z of the vibrations at two different measurement points were considered as the components of the vibration process to be analyzed. The regression lines, corresponding to different values of the loading torque, are presented. Since it was not the gear drive parameters which were determined by diagnostic methods, but the characteristics most sensitive to change in state of the object of the investigation, the loading torque, which is the simplest and most accessible for measurement, was chosen as the condition parameter.

Beschreibung: Disturbances created by certain assemblies and components of tape-feed mechanisms (TFM) and acting on a moving magnetic tape are studied. The method, based on elements of digital logic, is established by stress-strain diagrams of the longitudinal deformations and vibrations across the width of a magnetic tape. Experimental studies were carried out for determination of the functional relationships of longitudinal deformations in a section of magnetic tape to the magnitude of roller play, tension vibrations rate of movement, and elasticity of magnetic tapes. A block diagram of the measurements is shown. Appropriate digital computer algorithms and programs were proposed for statistical analysis of the data obtained. Estimates of the mathematical expectation, dispersion, intercorrelation function, energy spectral density, and distribution pattern of the random process values were calculated.

Beschreibung: Attempts were made to develop a dynamic metal working machine tool system using probability information on external factors and independent disturbances of the parameters. The problem was optimized in two stages: (1) creation of mathematical models under conditions determined by input influences, and (2) processing the results of calculations obtained on such models. Data were obtained on the patterns of distribution of dynamic quality characteristics of the tool, vibration frequencies and amplitudes, attenuation coefficients, and duration of a transition process. These data were obtained using a digital computer, statistical test methods, or logical possibility trees.

Beschreibung: On the basis of experimental research, an analysis was carried out of the effect of certain errors in manufacture of straight-barrel slots on the noise characteristics of gear drives. In carrying out the experiments, the gear crowns of the test wheels were held immovable, and only the geometric dimensions of the slots and the mutual locations of the individual elements were varied. The investigation of the effect of each factor was carried out under otherwise equal conditions, on 34:56 cog ratio gear pairs (m = 2mm), made of 40 C steel, with a gear crown accuracy of 7 X, machining fineness 7, at a speed v = 7.1 m/sec. The number of slots was 6. The clearance in slot pairs in dimension D, equal to 0.015, 0.05, 0.08 and 0.110 mm, was obtained by change in the outer diameter of the spindle by means of polishing. The results of the tests of the experimental wheels showed that their noise level increases with increase in clearance.

Beschreibung: Acoustic emission was recorded during burst tests of filament-wound, composite pressure vessels. Organic and graphite fibers were tested, and two different epoxy resin systems were used: one with a low and another with a relatively high cure temperature. Acoustic emission was studied for the effects of different winding patterns, artificial flaws, winding-induced fiber fraying, different resins, and different fibers. Small effects produced in the vessels by changes in these variables were greatly magnified when they appeared as changes in acoustic emission. They would, in fact, be difficult or impossible to detect by other test means.

Beschreibung: Three methods of attaching surface insulation tiles to shuttle primary structure have been proposed: direct bond, mechanical attachment, and subpanels with standoffs. The direct bond approach is lightweight but is difficult to refurbish and inspect. The subpanel approach is heavier but allows for easy refurbishment since subpanels are easily removed and replaced. The mechanical attachment approach allows easy refurbishment and inspection and is lightweight when an efficient insulator is used between surface insulation tiles and primary structure.

Beschreibung: The structure of the modern theory of rheology is discussed to show the assumptions and limitations. Rheology is discussed as a branch of continuum mechanics to determine the relationships between stress, strain, and strain rate which will give a closer representation of lubricant properties than the Newtonian flow equation. Rheology is also investigated as a branch of chemical physics. Consideration is limited to those theories of nonpolymeric and polymeric fluids which can represent viscoelasticity in terms of identifiable and measureable molecular characteristics. The possibility that elastic liquids may rupture in shear and linear tension analogous to the failure of solids is proposed.

Beschreibung: The various forms of corrosion are discussed and the role of localized electrochemical reactions in the wear of sliding surfaces are considered. It is stated that there is evidence that fretting corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, corrosion fatigue, and erosion corrosion have as a common basis the localized electrochemical reactions caused by a combination of the induced homogeneity of the surfaces and the corrosive environment. Several processes leading to erosive wear are discussed.

Beschreibung: The causes for breakdown in the lubricant film of mineral oils are discussed. It is stated that the critical point is caused by desorption of the naturally occurring surface active agent and can be described by thermodynamic analysis. The effect of different metals in lubrication is surveyed. The problem of breakdown in elastohydrodynamic lubrication is treated phenomenologically by studying traction. The topics considered are classical and non-Newtonian explanations, anomalous film thickness and viscosity effects, surface roughness contributions, and solidification of the lubricant. Reasons for the apparent granular traction characteristics are examined.

The mechanism is designed to jettison one large panel and to release a second panel; both panels have independent multi-point attachments to the spacecraft and require to be released in sequence. The solar array is stowed concertina fashion under 2 psi pressure to ensure that no movement occurs between the stowed folds of the array during the launch. One pair of linear pyrotechnic-actuators releases both the JBSA and the pressure plate via the release mechanism. This release mechanism has successfully passed qualification level vibration launch and thermal environment tests and has accumulated to date close to 30 successful releases.

The drive employs a redundant lubrication system to increase its reliability. An overrunning clutch mechanism is used to permit block redundant application of two or more drives to a common array drive shaft. Two prototype actuator and clutch assemblies, in continuous vacuum life test under load at 10 to the minus 8th power torr for more than sixteen months, have each accumulated more than 34,000 output revolutions without anomaly, the equivalent of more than seven years of operation in a 1000 km orbit or nearly ninety-five years at synchronous altitude.

It consists of a mechanical assembly on the right, and associated electronics on the left. The momentum wheel is mounted at the center of the rotor shaft and the magnetic bearings are on each end. The rotor is magnetically suspended so there is no physical contact between the rotor and the support structure. The system, therefore, can operate directly in the vacuum environment without lubrication; and it has virtually unlimited operating lifetime, independent of speed.

Beschreibung: Brushless dc motors are finding increasing application in space. Likewise, with the advent of the light emitting diode, noncontacting encoders are gradually replacing sliding contact types. The direct drive concept has proved its merit and is now the preferred approach for tape recorders and low to moderate torque instrument drives. The final step in this evolution is the magnetic bearing, which now appears feasible for several applications. Where it can be applied in a totally noncontacting system, life and reliability will be a function of the electronic controls, where redundancy, derating, and quality assurance approaches virtually assure the desired lifetime and failure rate.

Beschreibung: Several boom arrangements were proposed for the Hawkeye spacecraft. The design chosen to fly consists of one pair of stem roll-out booms and a set of telescopic booms. Some of the advantages of choosing this boom configuration were that the booms could be stored in the belt line area, which is near the center of gravity of the spacecraft, and also with the approach the telescopic booms could be extended at the spacecraft's initial spin rate (180 rpm). By being able to extend these booms at the initial spin rate of the spacecraft the need for a despin system was eliminated, thus weight saving to the spacecraft. With the method of storage and extension employed by the telescopic design, the desirable sensor distance from the spacecraft could also be attained.

Beschreibung: A ribbon-shaped boron filament with a tensile strength of 138 KN/sq cm (200 ksi) was investigated. The investigation was carried out using both carbon and tungsten as substrate materials. No satisfactory results were obtained utilizing uncoated, copper-plated or silicon carbide coated tungsten ribbon substrates. Carbon ribbon substrates were prepared by pyrolysis of stretched polyimide tape. A severe deposition gradient occurred in all dc reactor experiments due to convective cooling at the edge of the substrate that resulted in a weak, nonuniform filament. RF heating, however, completely eliminated this gradient problem and a 90 cm (35.5 in.) long boron ribbon was produced at .85 cm/sec (100 ft/hr) using a frequency of 40.68 megahertz. This boron ribbon, however, exhibited a light-bulb effect during deposition to 59 KN/sq cm (85.7 ksi) were obtained from this ribbon. Several silicon carbide ribbon shaped filaments were also produced during this investigation by decomposition of CH3SiHCl2 onto carbon substrates. Contrary to the boron work, silicon carbide ribbon was readily prepared in dc static reactors. A very uniform and smooth deposition was obtained with strengths up to 71.1 KN/sq cm (103.5 ksi).

Beschreibung: Continuum mechanics solutions are derived for the static load-carrying capacity of scarf and stepped-lap adhesive-bonded joints. The analyses account for adhesive plasticity and adherend stiffness imbalance and thermal mismatch. The scarf joint solutions include a simple algebraic formula which serves as a close lower bound, within a small fraction of a per cent of the true answer for most practical geometries and materials. Digital computer programs were developed and, for the stepped-lap joints, the critical adherend and adhesive stresses are computed for each step. The scarf joint solutions exhibit grossly different behavior from that for double-lap joints for long overlaps inasmuch as that the potential bond shear strength continues to increase with indefinitely long overlaps on the scarf joints. The stepped-lap joint solutions exhibit some characteristics of both the scarf and double-lap joints. The stepped-lap computer program handles arbitrary (different) step lengths and thickness and the solutions obtained have clarified potentially weak design details and the remedies. The program has been used effectively to optimize the joint proportions.

The analyses extend the elastic solution Volkersen and cover adhesive plasticity, adherend stiffness imbalance and thermal mismatch between the adherends. Both elastic-plastic and bi-elastic adhesive representations lead to the explicit result that the influence of the adhesive on the maximum potential bond strength is defined uniquely by the strain energy in shear per unit area of bond. Failures induced by peel stresses at the ends of the joint are examined. This failure mode is particularly important for composite adherends. The explicit solutions are sufficiently simple to be used for design purposes

Beschreibung: The results of a program to investigate and characterize seal materials suitable for space shuttle storable propellant systems are given. Two new elastomeric materials were identified as being potentially superior to existing state-of-the art materials for specific sealing applications. These materials were AF-E-124D and AF-E-411. AF-E-124D is a cured perfluorinated polymer suitable for use with dinitrogen tetroxide oxidizer, and hydrazine base fuels. AF-E-411 is an ethylene propylene terpolymer material for hydrazine base fuel service. Data are presented relative to low and high temperature characteristics as well as propellant exposure effects. Types of data included are: mechanical properties, stress strain curves, friction and wear characteristics, compression set and permeability. Sealing tests with a flat poppet-seal valve were conducted for verification of sealing capability. A bibliography includes over 200 references relating to seal design or materials and presents a concise tabulation of the more useful seal design data sources.

In addition, those valves used as thruster shutoff valves must feature fast response characteristics to achieve small, repeatable minimum impulse bits. These valve technology problems are solved by developing unique valve components such as sealing closures, guidance devices, and actuation means and by demonstrating two prototype valve concepts. One of the prototype valves is cycled over one million cycles without exceeding a leakage rate of 27 scc's per hour at 450 psia helium inlet pressure throughout the cycling program.

The deduced relation was found to adequately reflect the high load dependence exhibited by the measured minimum film thickness data at high Hertizian contact stresses, that is, above 1.04 x 10 to the ninth N/sq m (150,000 psi). Comparisons were made with the numerical results from a theoretical isothermal film thickness formula. Beschreibung: Coefficient of friction measurements were made for six unlubricated metal couples exposed to the space environment aboard the OV-1-13 spacecraft and exposed to laboratory vacuum. Materials studied included mutually soluble, partially soluble, and insoluble metal combinations. Two samples of each material couple were tested in space and in the laboratory using the disk and rider technique. Linear velocity was 0.10 cm/s (2.5 in/min) and rider normal load was 4.45 N (1 lb) for the gold versus silver couples and 8.90 N (2lb) for the other combinations. Results showed that friction data obtained in a clean ion-pumped laboratory vacuum of 10 to the minus 10 power materials with low mutual solubility can be correlated to operation in the vicinity of a typical scientific spacecraft that is exposed to an ambient pressure as low as 10 to the minus 12 power torr. The expected increase in coefficient of friction with solubility was shown. Material couples with high mutual solubility present the hazard of unpredictable drastic friction increase in orbit which may not be evident in laboratory testing at levels down to 10 to the minus 10 power torr. It was also shown that gross cold welding of unlubricated metals exposed to a satellite environment does not occur.

Beschreibung: Four candidate lubricants for next generation aircraft gas turbine application were tested under open atmosphere conditions in a rig simulating an advanced engine 125 mm bore mainshaft thrust bearing position. Testing was conducted at speeds to 24,000 rpm (3,000,000 bearing DN), bearing ring temperature of 500 F, and with 1200 F air and 100 psi differential pressure across the seals installed in a dual tandem arrangement. Test bearing was a 125 mm bore split inner ring, outer race riding angular contact ball bearing under a 3280 lb. thrust load. One lubricant, a type 2 ester, performed extremely well. The mainshaft seal limited the performance. Numerous design improvements for this seal were indicated.

Beschreibung: The articulation subsystem actuators were rigorously tested in severe environments. They were operated through temperature ranges from -73 C to +121 C. In each case the temperature rate of change was at maximum. The actuator under test at room temperature was put into a pre-chilled or preheated chamber. Satisfactory performance was obtained throughout this full temperature range and under the temperature shock conditions above. However, at temperatures below -78 C some leakage was experienced through the O-ring seal around the shaft. The actuators were subjected to severe vibration and 500 g shock test with a time duration of 0.0007 seconds. The scan actuator was life tested by operating it from stop to stop through 2,000 cycles with 20,000 start-stop procedures randomly distributed through the 2,000 cycles.

Beschreibung: This publication is the result of over 260 fractional-frequency-whirl stability tests on a variety of fixed-geometry journal bearings. It is intended principally as a guide in the selection and design of antiwhirl bearings that must operate at high speeds and low loads in low-viscosity fluids such as water or liquid metals. However, the various fixed-geometry configurations can be employed as well in applications where other lubricants, such as oil, are used and fractional-frequency whirl is a problem. The important parameters that effect stability are discussed for each bearing type, and design curves to facilitate the design of optimum-geometry bearings are included. A comparison of the stability of the different bearing configurations tested is also given.

Beschreibung: The fabrication and mechanical testing of the high-pressure-ratio compressor are reported. Mechanical testing was performed to demonstrate overspeed capability, adequate rotor dynamics, electrical isolation of the gas bearing trunnion mounted diffuser and shroud and the effect of operating parameters (speed and pressure ratio) on clearance of the compressor test rig. The speed range covered was 20 to 120 percent of rated speed (80,000 rpm). Following these tests an acceptance test which consisted of a 5 hour run at 80,000 rpm was made with approximately design impeller to shroud clearances. For Vol. 1, see N73-26483.

Beschreibung: The effects of surface active additives on rolling-element fatigue life were investigated with the five-ball fatigue tester at conditions where classical subsurface initiated rolling-element fatigue is the sole mode of failure. Test balls of AISI 52100, AISI M-50, and AISI 1018 were run with an acid-treated white oil containing either 2.5 percent sulfurized terpene, 1 percent didodecyl phosphite, or 5 percent chlorinated wax. In general, it was found that the influence of surface active additives was detrimental to rolling-element fatigue life. The chlorinated-wax additive significantly reduced fatigue life by a factor of 7. The base oil with the 2.5 percent sulfurized-terpene additive can reduce fatigue life by as much as 50 percent. No statistical change in fatigue life occurred with the base oil having the 1 percent didodecyl-phosphite additive. The additives used with the base oil did not change the ranking of the bearing steels where rolling-element fatigue life was of subsurface origin.

Beschreibung: A development program to establish the feasibility and applicability of high energy rate forging procedures to tool steel spur gears was performed. Included in the study were relatively standard forging procedures as well as a thermo-mechanical process termed ausforming. The subject gear configuration utilized was essentially a standard spur gear having 28 teeth, a pitch diameter of 3.5 inches and a diametral pitch of 8. Initially it had been planned to use a high contact ratio gear design, however, a comprehensive evaluation indicated that severe forging problems would be encountered as a result of the extremely small teeth required by this type of design. The forging studies were successful in achieving gear blanks having integrally formed teeth using both standard and thermo-mechanical forging procedures.

Beschreibung: Various gases were adsorbed to copper, aluminum, and chromium surfaces. The gases included oxygen, hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan, and sulfur dioxide. Chemisorption was conducted on static surfaces and during dynamic friction experiments. An Auger cyclindrical mirror analyzer was used to monitor surface films. The sulfur containing gases adsorbed readily to all surfaces. Exposures of as little as 0.000001 (torr)(sec) (1 langmuir) were sufficient to reduce friction. Sliding contact did not affect chemisorption of copper or aluminum but did affect chemisorption to chromium surfaces. Oxygen removed sulfur films from all surfaces at room temperature (23 C). Gaseous exposures were from 0.000001 to 0.01 (torr)(sec) (1 to 10,000 langmuirs).

Beschreibung: An experimental program was conducted to evaluate and select materials for ball bearings intended for use in liquid fluorine and/or FLOX. The ability of three different ball-separator materials, each containing nickel, to form and transfer a nickel fluoride film to provide effective lubrication at the required areas of a ball bearing operating in liquid fluorine was evaluated. In addition, solid lubrication of a ball bearing operating in liquid fluorine by either a fused fluoride coating applied to all surfaces of the ball separator or by a fluoride impregnation of porous sintered material ball separators was evaluated. Less bearing wear occurred when tests were conducted in the less reactive FLOX. Bearings fabricated from any of the materials tested would have relatively short wear lives and would require frequent replacement in a reusable engine.

Beschreibung: The actuator was redesigned to accommodate the new thermal motor for the Helios flipper. This design retained the basic configuration and dimensions of the original actuator. Changes were made primarily to the cradle and motor assembly. Because of the increased dimensions of the thermal motor, it was necessary to increase the diameter of the pellet case and associated parts including the back off spring and the piston return spring. The new springs were designed to yield the same spring rate differential as the originals. The design effort resulted in a new top assembly and approximately twenty sub-assembly and detail drawings. A list of drawings generated by EMR is attached.

Beschreibung: An iron surface was exposed to the extreme-pressure type lubricant benzyl chloride, dichlorophenyl phosphine, dichlorophenyl phosphine sulfide, ophenyl phosphine oxide. Iron, in the sputter-cleaned state, was exposed to these materials statically and during dynamic friction experiments. With benzyl chloride only chlorine adsorbed to the surface, and with dichlorophenyl phosphine no adsorption occurred, while the addition of sulfur to that same molecular structure resulted in the promotion of carbon and chlorine adsorption. substitution of oxygen for sulfur in the dichlorobenzyl phosphine molecule resulted in carbon, chlorine, and oxygen adsorption. With none of the phosphorus containing molecules was phosphorus detected on the surface. Sliding in an atmosphere of benzyl chloride promoted adsorption of chlorine to the iron surface. Increases in load resulted in a decrease in the surface concentration of iron chloride.

Beschreibung: The variation of specimen lateral stiffness with compressive axial loading is studied experimentally, and it is demonstrated that buckling loads can be predicted for monocoque shells from such data. A study of the initial specimen geometry is presented, and an evaluation is made of its effect on the distribution of stiffness at zero axial load. When the lateral test force used to determine the stiffness is considered as a destabilizing load in combination with the axial compression, it is shown that critical values of the force can be estimated by the 'Southwell plot' procedure. These critical forces can be correlated with axial load and extrapolated to yield an accurate estimate of the buckling load.

The test conditions were selected to simulate transmission operation and were 230 F oil temperature, and a sliding speed of 9400 ft/min. The split ring seal exhibited gross leakage and was considered unsatisfactory, while the circumferential seal leakage was less than 1 c.c./hour; this leakage is within acceptable limits. The circumferential seal wear was only to .0005 inches during a 100 hour run (40 starts and stops). During a 40 hour contamination test (mesh silica flour) the seal total wear was a maximum of .004 inches. This wear is considered acceptable.
