Description: The methods, techniques, and devices used in testing various electrical and electronic apparatus are presented. The items described range from semiconductor package leak detectors to automatic circuit analyzer and antenna simulators for system checkout. In many cases the approaches can result in considerable cost savings and improved quality control. The testing of various electronic components, assemblies, and systems; the testing of various electrical devices; and the testing of cables and connectors are explained.

Description: The Apollo 15 and 16 experiments are discussed. The formal scientific experiments conducted in lunar orbit are listed in an appendix. The gamma ray spectrometer performed a compositional survey of the upper 30 cm of the lunar surface by observing the gamma rays emitted during the radioactive decay of naturally occurring radioisotopes and their daughter products, and of the radioisotopes produced by cosmic ray bombardment of lunar surface materials. The results from the Apollo 15 X-ray spectrometer have shown excellent correlation between returned samples and gross lunar features. The various systems and experiments are described in detail.

Description: A device and method are provided for performing qualitative and quantitative elemental analysis through the utilization of a vacuum UV chromatographic detector. The method involves the use of a carrier gas at low pressure. The gas carries a sample to a gas chromatograph column; the column output is directed to a microwave cavity. In this cavity, a low pressure microwave discharge produces fragmentation of the compounds present and generates intense atomic emissions in the vacuum ultraviolet. These emissions are isolated by a monochromator and measured by photometer to establish absolute concentration for the elements.

Description: A wide variety of problems in solar physics will be attacked with coordinated observations made by the following instruments on Skylab: a white light coronagraph, a spectrograph for the 950-3900 A range, a spectrometer-spectroheliometer for the 300-1300 A range, a spectroheliograph for 150-650 A, X-ray telescopes, and supporting instrumentation. There will be complementary measurements from the ground and from space with 1-sec angular resolution on the sun. A coordinated program of correlative ground-based observations, sounding rocket launches, and observations from other spacecraft is being developed to provide calibration in orbit and simultaneous observations of solar phenomena over a broad range of the electromagnetic spectrum.

Description: A number of total-pressure tubes were tested in a nonsteady flow generator in which the fraction of period that pressure is a maximum is approximately 0.8, thereby simulating turbomachine-type flow conditions. Most of the tubes indicated a pressure which was higher than the true average. Organ-pipe resonance which further increased the indicated pressure was encountered with the tubes at discrete frequencies. There was no obvious combination of tube diameter, length, and/or geometry variation used in the tests which resulted in negligible averaging error. A pneumatic-type probe was found to measure true average pressure and is suggested as a comparison instrument to determine whether nonlinear averaging effects are serious in unknown pulsation profiles.

Description: Comparisons between flow visualization systems using electron-beam fluorescence, schlieren, and shadowgraph techniques illustrate the advantages associated with the electron beam. Specific applications of this method as an aid in defining the origin of erosion on a heat-transfer model are cited. Results of combined electron-beam oil-flow studies on configurations illustrate that the simultaneous definition of the external flow field and its surface flow can be obtained. Comparisons between the electron-beam oil-flow visualization method and phase-change coating heat-transfer tests on a shuttle ascent configuration indicate the complementary nature of these two testing techniques. Potential methods for improving the electron-beam technique are included.

Description: The studies reported were conducted to gain a fundamental understanding of adhesion and dynamic friction on an atomic or microscopic level. Fundamental aspects of low energy electron diffraction (LEED), Auger emission spectroscopy (AES), and field ion microscopy (FIM) are discussed. Typical results of studies conducted are considered, giving attention to LEED-AES experiments, pin and disk experiments, and field ion microscope investigations.
