    Notizen: Conclusions 1. The seepage regime in the HES building's foundation agrees with laboratory investigations conduced when the structures were planned. Effectiveness of the upstream apron and curtain wall varies along the upstream face, but total head dissipation along the apron and curtain wall is almost constant at 93–97% of the head. 2. The depression surface in the bodies of the earth dams lies sufficiently below the downstream slope; some rise behind the drains is due to the seams of argillaceous sands in the foundation, which create a seepage-flow head. To obtain reliable data on the position of the depression surface in a structure in situ, it is necessary to study and thoroughly evaluate the geologic conditions in the dam's foundation and the seepage properties of its body. 3. Settling, which by the end of 1970 reached 46 to 74 mm for the building and 70 to 110 mm for the abutments, has practically stabilized in recent years. 4. Relative displacements of concrete-structure blocks perpendicular to joints follow the temperature regime. Sisplacements along the joint are negligible.

    Notizen: Conclusions 1. The hydraulic testing of the turbine penstock permitted the elimination of several defects detected in its shell. Of the two types of bulkhead flanges used in the tests, the erection of the plane flange is considerably simpler. 2. The installation of a drain ahead of each line of the penstock permits the water leaking through the gate seals, when the gate is closed, to be intercepted and discharged through outlet pipes into a ditch. The use of such drains can be recommended at similar hydroelectric stations. 3. Because the removal of the internal bracing of the transition chambers in the penstocks was carried out by oxygen flame cutting, which causes local heating of the lining and its peeling away from the concrete, the number of braces should be reduced to a minimum and external ribs of sufficient stiffness adopted instead. 4. In addition to by-pass pipes connecting the draft-tube chambers, it is also desirable to provide pipes for the direct communication of the draft tubes to the tailwater, for the equalizing of water levels before raising a maintenance gate, regardless of whether or not there is water in the other pipes.

The investigations disclosed a phenomenon which is seldom encountered in the operation of hydraulic structures: in the powerhouse foundation at the Sheksninsk hydroelectric plant a region of reduced piezometric levels with negative heads and increased hydraulic gradients was created near the zone of the soils containing gypsum. 2. The cause of this phenomenon is the drainage action exerted on the seepage flow by the powerhouse mass. The propagation of the reduced piezometric levels to a considerable depth is intensified by the presence of pervious soil seams under the structure. 3. The seepage regime created is objectionable, since it increases the danger of chemical suffosion of the soils containing gypsum which lie at a depth of 20 m under the structures. 4. To increase the draining effect of the concrete mass upon the seepage flow, it is recommended to inundate below the downstream water level the lower gallery of the powerhouse. 5. The observations and measures applied in the investigations permitted appraising the state of the structures under the complex operating conditions, as well as disclosing the defects of the previously installed control-measurement instrumentation. 6. The investigations clearly demonstrated the harm which may be caused by an inadequate installation of control-measurement equipment in hydraulic structures.

Gate parts exposed to the air can be advantageously protected by a resistant metallized coating which showed high qualities in 3 years of operation; on submerged gate parts cathodic protection should be used. 2. It was found from 4 years' operational experience that the proposed anode construction is sufficiently strong, even when the gates are ice-encrusted. 3. The implemented cathodic protection ensures a quite satisfactory protection-potential distribution over the gates' surfaces. The protection is simple in operation. 4. Application of the protection on an unpainted surface entails practically no increase in operating costs. With an electrical power cost price of 0.1 kopeck/kWh and a power use of 2 kW continuously during 6 months of the year, the electrical power cost for the entire hydrocenter comes to 8.64 rubles. In protecting a painted surface, the electrical-power cost reduces by 25–30%, but painting costs per year of operation rise substantially.

    Notizen: Conclusions 1. For the analysis of arch and gravity-arch dams, wide use is made of the trial-load method. The difficulty and tediousness of the analysis using the trial-load method for determining the equalization loads make it extremely important at the present time to automate this method by means of electronic computers. 2. The method of cantilever-arch directions presented by the writers, which is based on the ideas of the wellknown method of variable directions used in mathematical physics, makes it possible to take into consideration the specific characteristics of the equations which arise in the trial-load method, to correlate the method of development at the analytical scheme with the method of solution of the equalization problem, and to create an algorithm realized on an electronic computer at the Gidroproekt Institute. 3. The analysis of the results obtained by using the MACD method demonstrated the effectiveness of this method and permitted using the program in the design of several arch dams.
