Notes: [Auszug] SIR,-It is not only in Britain that insect taxonomy is regrettably so neglected (Nature, 238, 475 ; 1972). The same situation obtains in many other countries. I am told by colleagues abroad, and am a witness to the problem myself, that the always notoriously limited financial and moral support for ...

Notes: In von Willebrand's disease, the only in vitro abnormality of platelet function is reduced retention of platelets in glass bead columns. Although this finding suggests that the test reflects an important function in normal hemostasis, its mechanism is poorly understood. The method developed by Bowie and colleagues7 has been used to elucidate some of the variables affecting the test. Heparinized blood is passed rapidly through the column and the percentage of platelets retained in the fourth and fifth ml is calculated. In normal subjects, more than 90% is usually retained. Disturbing the blood markedly decreases retention. Retention spontaneously returns to normal in about 45 minutes after disturbance or within ten minutes after addition of apyrase. Addition of 0.1 μM ADP decreases retention with a maximum effect at ten minutes. The lowered retention caused by disturbing blood appears to result from ADP probably sequestered in the platelet membrane. Slow centrifugation and remixing of blood also reduces retention which is restored by apyrase. Platelets in platelet-rich plasma are not retained in the column even after incubation with apyrase or apyrase plus adenosine deaminase, or after adding ADP. Adding red cell ghosts to platelet-rich plasma improves retention, although not as effectively as erythrocytes. Since ghosts contain virtually no ADP, it is suggested that they act by altering hemodynamics, either causing platelets to enter the marginal zone of plasma so that they contact the beads and tubing, or increasing the turnover of plasma in this zone to permit greater interaction of plasma components with the foreign surfaces.

Notes: In comparing the similarity between time, frequency, and phase measurements as used in the induced polarization method of geophysical prospecting, parameters must first be defined and the basis for comparison established. The conditions for mathematical equivalence then follow in a natural sequence. Laboratory measurements are made on a variety of rock samples to indicate the type of comparison and correlation expected from field measurements. Results indicate that frequency domain and phase measurements are equivalent, but two frequency domain measurements are needed to produce the same amount of polarization information as a single phase measurement. Frequency and time domain measurements will be similar but never equivalent due to the basic differences in their respective parameter definitions.

Notes: The relationship between relative humidity and transpiration was studied in the basidiocarps of Coprinus, Amanita, Agaricus, Tricholoma, Collybia and Polyporus. Transpiration decreases with an increase in the humidity and there is virtually no transpiration in nearly saturated air.To determine the relationship between uptake and transpiration, stipes were immersed in solutions of various osmotic ally active substances and inhibitors. Results showed that uptake has no influence on the transpiration.Additional data suggested that uptake in a detached basi-diocarp proceeds as long as the fruit body is young and healthy. Studies with fluorescein dye and mannitol showed that most transpiration occurs at the surface and edges of the hymenium.

Notes: SYNOPSIS. In an electron microscope study of the neogregarine Farinocystis tribolii Weiser 1953 in the fat body of the larvae of the flour beetle Tribolium castaneum, empty oocysts and adjacent sporozoites of the gregarine were found. The empty oocysts contained host cell cytoplasm, a residuum only slightly larger than that in mature oocysts, and some remnants of the oocyst membrane pressed tightly against the inner surface of the wall. Apparently normal sporozoites were found near the empty oocysts and no damaged ones were seen. It is assumed that the sporozoites go on developing in the host, i.e., that autoinfection takes place.

Notes: Detached Nicotiana rustica leaves were exposed for 2 minutes to temperatures in the range 36° to 51°C. Above 45°C, 14CO2 fixation was reduced by half as compared with controls. The fall in 14CO2 fixation continued for 2 1/2 h. Recovery was completed 45 h after the treatment. Above 45°C there was an increase in the labeled cationic and anionic fractions and a decrease in the neutral fractions, both increase and decrease being associated with the impaired CO2 fixation. However, these changes in products were also demonstrated when leaves were exposed to the high temperature after labeling.
