Description: Equations governing the incident heat flux distribution beneath a lamp-reflector system were developed. Analysis of a particular radiant heating facility showed good agreement between theory and experiment when a lamp power loss correction was used. In addition, the theory was employed to estimate thermal disruption in the radiation field caused by a protruding probe.

Description: A gas-controlled variable-conductance heat pipe was qualified for flight aboard orbiting astronomical observatory (OAO3). Experiments were conducted to determine the performance and reliability of the pipe in the vacuum environment of space, and to demonstrate in a specific engineering application its effectiveness in providing temperature stability for spacecraft equipment which experiences varying electronic duty cycles and changing thermal boundary conditions. System design and hardware are discussed in detail.

Description: Thermal mathematical modelling is discussed in detail. A three-fold purpose was established: (1) to acquaint the new user with the terminology and concepts used in thermal mathematical modelling, (2) to present the more experienced and occasional user with quick formulas and methods for solving everyday problems, coupled with study cases which lend insight into the relationships that exist among the various solution techniques and parameters, and (3) to begin to catalog in an orderly fashion the common formulas which may be applied to automated conversational language techniques.

Description: Drag measurements were obtained for circular cylinders attached perpendicularly to a flat-plate surface. Measurements were obtained for a single cylinder and for rows of cylinders. The cylinders were alined at various sweep angles relative to the free-stream velocity vector and at spacings appropriate for roughness elements used as boundary layer trips. The drag measurements were obtained for Mach numbers of 3.95 and 4.60, ratios of cylinder height to an undisturbed laminar boundary layer displacement thickness of approximately 1.0 to 3.0, a cylinder height-to-diameter ratio of approximately 2, and sweep angles up to 60. A complete presentation of the experimental results is given. A discussion of the more significant findings, including the most appropriate parameters for correlating the experimental results, is presented.

Description: A computerized acoustic attenuation prediction procedure has been developed to evaluate acoustically lined ducts for various geometric and environmental parameters. The analysis procedure is based on solutions to the acoustic wave equation, assuming uniform airflow on a duct cross section, combined with appropriate mathematical lining impedance models. The impedance models included in the analysis procedure are representative of either perforated sheet or porous polyimide impregnated fiberglass facing sheet coupled with a cellular backing space. Advantages and limitations of the analysis procedure are reviewed.
