Description: The results are presented for a systematic investigation on the use of anhydrides to prepare stable elastomeric materials for space use, under mild reaction conditions. The three anhydrides investigated were found to provide effective chain extension of hydroxy-terminated poly(alkylene oxides) and poly(butadienes). These were tetrahydrofuran tetracarboxylic dianhydride, pyromellitic dianhydride, and benzophenone tetracarboxylic diahydride. The most effective catalyst investigated was ferric acetylacetonate, which resulted in chain extension at 333 K (60 C). One feature of these anhydride reactants is that they are difunctional as anhydrides, but tetrafunctional if conditions are selected that lead to reaction of all carboxyl groups. Therefore, chain extension can be effected and then followed by crosslinking via the residual carboxyl groups.

Description: Discussion of the results of several experimental investigations on laser-induced gas breakdown. The experiments included time-resolved spectroscopy, direct detection of H atoms with a TiO2 probe, and chemical reactions; each of them provided insight into the behavior of the medium at different times. Chemical reactions and explosions have been initiated by the laser beam when a plasma was created. No primary multiphotonic absorption and no macroscopic chemical reactions were observed below the breakdown threshold.

Description: The results of carbon monoxide quantum yield measurements of carbon dioxide photolysis by radiation at 1470 A and in the region from 1500 to 1670 A are presented in tabular form. The experimental technique and equipment developed by Inn and Heimerl (1971) were used. These measurements, together with some previously reported ones for a longer wavelength region, are intended to provide a uniform set of values based on the same experimental technique for the entire spectral region that is relevant to the carbon-dioxide photochemistry in the atmospheres of Mars and Venus.

Description: Description of methods developed for the preparation of N-TFA-S(-)prolyl chloride and for synthesizing from it N-TFA-S-prolyl(and S)-leucine methyl ester diastereomers without detectible racemization. These diastereomers prepared by these methods were subjected to GC analyses under conditions permitting baseline separation of two diastereomeric peaks, while peak areas were measured with an electronic digital integrator. Under these conditions, it was found that the known enantiomeric compositions could be duplicated experimentally to an absolute error of only 0.0 to 0.6% over the entire composition range.

Description: The fluorescence spectra produced during the photodissociation were observed. Two excited states of SO were formed. The threshold energy of incident photons to produce one of the excited states was determined. The result is used to obtain the heat of formation of SO. No fluorescence due to molecular chlorine was observed, and the possible reasons for this are discussed.

Description: A Kr resonance lamp was used in the investigations. All experiments were performed at 25 C and 0.2 torr of propyne. Between 5% and 25% of the propyne was decomposed in any one experiment. It was found that the addition of 25% C2D4 had no effect on the quantum yield of molecular hydrogen. This suggests that hydrogen formation in the photolysis of propyne at 1236 A occurs exclusively via a molecular process. Pressure effects on the distribution of isotopic hydrogen formed in the photolysis were also investigated.

Description: The application of an analytical approach combining gas chromatography with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) has shown that the amino acid composition of meteorite extracts is quite complex. A computer was used in the evaluation of the data obtained in the investigations. The computer programs developed have been concerned solely with the mass spectra of amino acids. Specialized programs have been written to determine the number of carbon atoms in an amino acid which is a member of any of three subclasses.

Description: Using the technique of flash photolysis-resonance fluorescence, the reaction of ground-state atomic sulfur with carbonyl sulfide has been investigated over the temperature range from 233 to 445 K. Over this temperature range, the experimental data were fitted to an Arrhenius equation of the form k sub 1 = (1.52 plus or minus 0.20) x 10 to the minus 12th power exp(-3.63 plus or minus 0.12 kcal/mol/RT) cu cm/molecule/sec. A comparison of these results with previous investigations on this reaction system is presented.

Description: Rates of oxidative vaporization of Cr2O3 have been found to be markedly enhanced in the presence of oxygen atoms. Investigations were conducted over the temperature range 200-1250 C. For Cr2O3 the enhancement was about 10 to the 9th power at 550 C in oxygen containing 2.5% atoms. Rapid oxidative vaporization of bare chromium was observed below 800 C, the rate being about one-half that of Cr2O3. Results are interpreted in terms of thermochemical analysis.
