    Description: Research and development of composite material systems to show applicability of these materials to shuttle structures and to demonstrate availability through a hardware development program is reported. The various configurations studied and potential areas of composite structures use are described and an outline of ongoing composite programs, complementing the indicated feasible applications, including a typical cost study, is shown. The following composite systems are investigated: Boron filaments with epoxy, polyimide, or aluminum matrix, and graphite filaments with epoxy or polyimide matrix.

    Description: The prediction of flight loads and their potential reduction, using various control logics for the space shuttle vehicles, is very complex. Some factors, not found on previous launch vehicles, that increase the complexity are large lifting surfaces, unsymmetrical structure, unsymmetrical aerodynamics, trajectory control system coupling, and large aeroelastic effects.     Description: The technology with respect to fracture control requirements of the shuttle is considered. The current state-of-the-art does permit an approach based on linear elastic fracture mechanics concepts. Development and implementation of a fracture control plan should recognize deficiencies and provide adequate resources for the extensive empirical test data which are required. With respect to the cost impact of such tests, recent experiences involving advanced aircraft systems have seen unit cost increases of from 200 to 500 percent.

    Description: Two docking device designs for Soyuz-type spacecraft are compared. The first was flight tested successfully; the second achieves rigid and exact joining of two spacecraft, while incorporating changes to allow for the intravehicular transfer of crew members.     Description: The development of three low-density rigidized insulation materials for the shuttle TPS application is reported. These materials consist of one high purity silica system and two systems based on mullite, an aluminum silicate. Both systems consist of fibers joined together with appropriate binders to obtain a rigidized insulation composite. Both material systems require the application of a glassy coating to provide a wear resistant, high emittance surface and to prevent the absorption of water by the fiber matrix. The technology program has addressed the development of water impervious coatings, methods of assembling the materials in design concepts while minimizing the thermal stress in the insulation, achieving compatibility between the RSI material and the structural system, and test evaluations to demonstrate the feasibility of the surface insulation concept.

    Description: Buffet of the space shuttle launch and reentry configuration is an area requiring continued evaluation to produce a safe reliable vehicle of minimum weight. Buffet forces result from flow separation and therefore can not be predicted accurately. Buffet loads are highly sensitive to configuration, angle of attack, and Mach number and can be reliably determined only by wind tunnel tests of elastically scaled models.

    Description: Two approaches that are used for determining the modes and frequencies of space shuttle structures are discussed. The first method, direct numerical analysis, involves finite element mathematical modeling of the space shuttle structure in order to use computer programs for dynamic structural analysis. The second method utilizes modal-coupling techniques of experimental verification made by vibrating only spacecraft components and by deducing modes and frequencies of the complete vehicle from results obtained in the component tests.

    Description: Sections C and E of the unpainted, polished aluminum tubing from the strut of the radar altimeter and Doppler velocity sensor were examined in a transmission electron microscope for micrometeorite damage and ion bombardment. Both sections were contaminated and eroded on one side; it is suggested that these conditions were caused by sandblasting by lunar dust and retrorocket plume contamination during Surveyor 3 landing. Microcraters of different configurations were found on the bright sides of the tubes. Several degrees of violence were involved in the formation of the craters, and the particle size could be responsible for some differences. All micropits found were on the bright areas and data indicate 0.2 hypervelocity impact/sq cm and 2/sq cm for other types of craters. The greatest degree of damage resulted from particle impact and was limited to a maximum depth of 2 microns.

    Description: An early version of an external hydrogen-oxygen tank orbiter was used as a baseline vehicle to experimentally evaluate: (1) nose shape and canopy effects on longitudinal, lateral, and directional stability and trim, and (2) yaw due to aerodynamic roll control at hypersonic speeds. Nose alterations were examined since that part of the vehicle may be subject to modifications because of internal packaging requirements, alleviation of potential high heating areas, and/or possible improvements in aerodynamic stability and control. There was also some concern about the effect of the rather high profile canopy on the aerodynamics; therefore its removal was examined. In addition, roll-yaw coupling was investigated because of its impact on the RCS fuel requirements for entry maneuvers.

    Description: Considerations of cruise-back efficiency and subsonic flying qualities are shown to have resulted in a configuration with an aft high wing of moderate aspect ratio and with vertical tails located at the wing tips. The need to protect the air breathing engines during ascent and reentry and the desire for a low trim penalty longitudinal control surface led to consideration of a jet-flap canard. The advantages of this application of STOL technology to a space system are examined and the results of both wind tunnel tests and flight simulations are discussed. Since the use of the jet-flap canard concept offers the potential for a minimum weight vehicle, a proposed technology development program is outlined in order that the full benefit of this concept may be realized.

    Description: Possible Earth reentry simulation of shallow-angle (3 to 30 deg) Jupiter entry was investigated in terms of four parameters of the bow shock layer ahead of a blunt vehicle: peak (equilibrium) temperature, peak pressure, peak inward radiative flux, and time-integrated radiative flux. It is shown that simulation ranging from fair to good can be achieved. Reentry is easiest (lowest Earth reentry speed) at steep Earth reentry, in the Earth entry speed range of 15 to 22 km/sec, for both the Jupiter nominal and cool atmospheres. Increased Earth speed is required, generally, for increasing Jupiter entry angle, and for increasing temperature, radiative flux, time-integrated flux and pressure, in that order.

    Description: The latest technology for structural analysis in relation to the design tasks that lie ahead for the space shuttle is reviewed. For shell-of-revolution structures, the analysis can be formulated as a one-dimensional problem which is readily solved by using finite-difference or numerical-integration techniques. For more general asymmetric shells, a two-dimensional formulation is required. However, the governing equations are readily formulated and are amenable to solution by finite-difference techniques. For a completely general structural arrangement, such as structural frameworks, recourse is usually made to discretized formulations using finite elements. Of course, the finite-element programs could be used for shell structures, but at a loss in accuracy and increase in computer time compared with the special purpose programs.

    Description: The development of weight-saving advanced design concepts for shuttle airframe structure is presented. Design concepts under investigation employ selective composite reinforcement and/or efficient geometric arrangements. An effort to develop metallic panel designs which exploit the relaxation of smooth external-surface requirements for skin structure is reviewed. Available highlights from research and development studies which investigate the application of composite reinforcement to the design of two types of fuselage panels, a shear web, a large fuselage frame, and a landing-gear-door assembly are presented. Preliminary results from these studies suggest weight savings of 25 percent can be obtained.

    Description: The results were presented of a parametric study performed to determine the optimum wing geometry for a proposed space shuttle orbiter. The results of the study establish the minimum weight wing for a series of wing-fuselage combinations subject to constraints on aerodynamic heating, wing trailing edge sweep, and wing over-hang. The study consists of a generalized design evaluation which has the flexibility of arbitrarily varying those wing parameters which influence the vehicle system design and its performance. The study is structured to allow inputs of aerodynamic, weight, aerothermal, structural and material data in a general form so that the influence of these parameters on the design optimization process can be isolated and identified. This procedure displays the sensitivity of the system design of variations in wing geometry. The parameters of interest are varied in a prescribed fashion on a selected fuselage and the effect on the total vehicle weight is determined. The primary variables investigated are: wing loading, aspect ratio, leading edge sweep, thickness ratio, and taper ratio.

    Description: Some of the aerodynamic and interference effects measured from wind-tunnel tests of three fully reusable space shuttle configurations at transonic and low-supersonic speeds are presented, and the status is given of an assessment of the analytical approach to date. The three configurations tested were a low-fineness-ratio booster combined in tandem with a delta-wing orbiter, designated the "low-fineness-ratio configuration,' and a phase B shuttle configuration consisting of the delta-wing orbiter and high-fineness-ratio booster, designated the "stage-arrangement configuration,' arranged in tandem and in parallel. The force measurements obtained at a Mach number of 1.5 for the low-fineness-ratio configuration were representative of the transonic and low-supersonic speed ranges where the interference effects are predominant and were used for comparison with values calculated at the same Mach number. This comparison is the basis for a preliminary assessment of the initial application of the analytical approach.

    Description: Cybernetics diagnostics of machines and mechanisms using the spectral approach is discussed. The problem of establishing the accuracy of determination of the spectral composition is investigated. In systems with rectilinear or rotary movement, the vibrations appear in the form of movement rate vibrations, which are equivalent to frequency modulation of the signal, in proportion to the mean movement rate of the body. The case of a harmonic signal which reproduces and analyzes the characteristics of the frequency modulated signal is discussed.     Description: Free vibrations of a system and vibrations which are multiples of them in frequency are discussed. The corresponding periodic forced vibrations of the type n/m (n is the number of periods of disturbance between periods of movement and m is the number of periods of movement in one period of disturbance), generated by a harmonic or close to harmonic disturbance, are propagated close to the corresponding curves of the free vibrations and their frequency multiples. It has been proposed that investigation of transitional modes of motion and capture regions be carried out by precise methods in phase space, with the least number of coordinates. Thus, for example, for nonautonomous second order equations (for example, the Duffing equations), in place of three variables (coordinates, velocity, phases), it is proposed to use two: velocity during transition of the coordinate through zero and phase.

The three initial parameters for a nonautonomous vibroshock system with one degree of freedom are identified as: (1) coordinates, (2) velocity, and (3) time.     Description: The method of automatic identification of acoustical signals, by means of the segmentation was used to investigate noises and vibrations in machines and mechanisms, for cybernetic diagnostics. The structural analysis consists of presentation of a noise or vibroacoustical signal as a sequence of segments, determined by the time quantization, in which each segment is characterized by specific spectral characteristics.     Description: An experimental investigation for estimating the nonlinearity of a diagnostic object was carried out on a single-stage, spur gear reducer. The linearity of the properties of spur gearing (including the linearity of its mode of operation) was tested. Torsional vibrations of the driven wheel and transverse (to the meshing plane) vibrations of the drive wheel on its support were taken as the two outputs of the object to be analyzed. The results of the investigation showed that the degree of nonlinearity of a reducing gear is essentially connected with its operating mode, so that different mathematical models of it can correspond to different values of the system parameters.

    Description: A method, developed for making measurements in reverberation chambers in the steady state mode, is reported. Spatial distribution patterns of the square of the sound pressure vs type of exciting signal were produced theoretically and checked experimentally in a reverberation chamber. Results of measurements of spatial irregularities of the field with pure tones and with noise bands in the 200 to 2,000 Hz frequency range were used for calculating statistical parameters of the reverbation fields by computer. The calculation program included determination of density probability function, integral distribution pattern, mathematical expectation, normalized dispersion of the mean square of the pressure.

    Description: Various calculation schemes were proposed for describing vibrations in a piping system with pulsating flow. Methods were selected and applied according to the type of irregularities examined: concentrated ones, extended ones, or complex ones. The selection of a method also depends on comparability of the extent of the irregularities with the pressure wavelength and velocity in the flow. Relations were found which permit a description of the interaction of a pulsating flow with any irregularity in the system. For complex systems with varying temperatures and some irregularities, relations were obtained, which reflect the varying phase displacement of the forces in these irregularities. The effect of the frictional torque on pipeline supports, in the presence of flexural and torsional vibrations was investigated, on the assumption that the frictional torque depends linearly on the angular velocity.

    Description: A program was compiled for calculating acoustical pressure levels, which might be created by vibrations of complex structures (an assembly of shells and rods), under the influence of a given force, for cases when these fields cannot be measured directly. The acoustical field is determined according to transition frequency and pulse characteristics of the structure in the projection mode. Projection characteristics are equal to the reception characteristics, for vibrating systems in which the reciprocity principle holds true. Characteristics in the receiving mode are calculated on the basis of experimental data on a point pulse space velocity source (input signal) and vibration response of the structure (output signal). The space velocity of a pulse source, set at a point in space r, where it is necessary to calculate the sound field of the structure p(r,t), is determined by measurements of acoustic pressure, created by a point source at a distance R. The vibration response is measured at the point where the forces F and f exciting the system should act.

In the absence of losses, reflections from the boundary frequently have to be taken into account. In this case, besides compensation for waves passing through the boundary, the reciprocal connection system can be used for compensation of the total field ahead of the boundary.     Description: The dynamics of rotational motion of a spinning orbiting spacecraft consisting of two rigid bodies connected by a flexible joint and arbitrary number of flexible appendages (two of which are flexible massless booms having masses on their tips) is analyzed. Active attitude control is provided by momentum exchange devices (e.g. control moment gyroscopes) or a mass expulsion system. The linearized equations of motion describing the vehicle are presented, and a large scale digital simulation that has been developed at the Marshall Space Flight Center is presented. A simplified model of the geometrically complex vehicle is selected to make it analytically tractable. The simplified model consists of a single rigid core body with two attached flexible massless booms having tip masses. The states of the vehicle are defined as small perturbations about its steady-state spin. An analysis is performed to determine the domain of stability.

    Description: Description of an efficient digital computer method for the determination of the propagation of elastic stresses and deformations in certain geometrically nonlinear structures subjected to high impact loading. The finite-element matrix displacement approach utilizing curved quadrilateral shell elements in conjunction with a nodewise predictor-corrector method employing Runge-Kutta extrapolation techniques has been adopted for the present solution. The related computer program written in FORTRAN V for the UNIVAC 1108 computer has proved to be effective for the solution of a range of practical problems including rectangular and cylindrical panels.     Description: The paper defines the experimental phase of an objective to obtain the mechanical characteristics and coefficients required by the generalized form of Hooke's law for nylon-polyurethane-coated fabric. Test specimens were cylindrical fabric sleeves and were loaded in axial tension by an Instron, in hoop tension by pressurizing, and in shear by a torquing fixture. An extensive amount of strain data is included for a wide combination of the three membrane loads.     Description: Rawinsonde wind profile data provide adequate wind shear information for vertical height intervals greater than 1 km. To specify wind shears for intervals below 1 km for space vehicle design, detailed wind-profile information like that provided by the FPS-16 Radar/Jimsphere system or an extrapolation procedure is required. This paper is concerned with the latter alternative. It is assumed that any realization from an ensemble of wind profiles can be represented in terms of a Fourier integral. This permits the calculation of the ensemble standard deviation and mean of the corresponding shear ensemble for any altitude and shear interval in terms of the power spectrum of the ensemble of wind profiles. The results of these calculations show that the mean and standard deviation of the wind shear ensemble, as well as the wind shear for any percentile, asymptotically behave like the vertical interval to the 0.7 power. This result is in excellent agreement with shear data from Cape Kennedy, Fla.

    Description: The philosophy of fracture mechanics is reviewed and utilized to formulate a simplified approach to the determination of the stress-intensity factor photoelastically for three-dimensional problems. The method involves a Taylor Series correction for the maximum in-plane shear stress (TSCM) and does not involve stress separation. The results are illustrated by applying the TSCM to surface flaws in bending fields. Other three-dimensional problems solved by the TSCM are cited.

    Description: Fundamental characterization of the constant-amplitude fatigue crack propagation is achieved by an analysis of the rate of change of crack length with change in number of applied loading cycles, defining the rate values such that they are consistent with the basic assumption of smoothness and continuity in the fatigue crack growth process. The technique used to satisfy the analytical conditions and minimize the effects of local material anomalies and experimental errors is that of fitting a smooth curve to the entire set of basic data by least square regression. This yields a well-behaved function relating the number of cycles to the crack length. By taking the first derivative of the function, the crack growth rate is obtained for each point. The class of curve fitting functions used in the analysis is the polynomial of degree n.

    Description: This paper gives an overview of the development and status of an improved numerical process for the solution of solid mechanics problems. The proposed process uses a mixed formulation with the fundamental unknowns consisting of both stress and displacement parameters. The problem is formulated either by means of first-order partial differential equations or in a variational form by using a Hellinger-Reissner-type mixed variational principle. For presentation purposes, the components of a numerical process are characterized and the criteria for an ideal process are outlined. Commonly used finite-difference and finite-element procedures are examined in the light of these criteria and it is shown that they fall short in a number of ways. The proposed numerical process, on the other hand, satisfies most of the optimality criteria and appears to be particularly suited for use with the forthcoming generation computers.

    Description: The purpose of this paper is to develop a sufficiently accurate analysis, which is much simpler than exact three-dimensional analysis, for statics and dynamics of composite laminates. The governing differential equations and boundary conditions are derived by following a variational approach. The displacements are assumed piecewise linear across the thickness and the effects of transverse shear deformations and rotary inertia are included. A procedure for obtaining the general solution of the above governing differential equations in the form of hyperbolic-trigonometric series is given. The accuracy of the present theory is assessed by obtaining results for free vibrations and flexure of simply supported rectangular laminates and comparing them with results from exact three-dimensional analysis.

    Description: Analytical and experimental data on the vibration characteristics of cantilevered winglike flat trapezoidal aluminum plates are presented. The plates had been reinforced with boron-epoxy composite material which had been placed symmetrically about the plate middle surface. The effect of filament orientation on the mode shapes and frequencies of the first ten modes and on the damping coefficients of several of the lowest frequency modes has been investigated experimentally. Experimental data are compared with results from a finite-element analysis. Stiffness properties of the composite material for use in the analysis were determined from vibration tests of composite reinforced aluminum beams.

    Description: The Neuber stress-concentration relation for notches in an elastic-plastic material subjected to shear loading was generalized for a crack in a finite plate subjected to tensile loading. An equation was derived which related the linear elastic stress-intensity factor, the applied stress, and two material parameters. The equation was then used as a two-parameter fracture criterion for surface- and through-cracked specimens. Fracture data from the literature on surface- and through-cracked sheet and plate specimens of steel, titanium alloy, titanium weldment, and aluminum alloy tested at room and cryogenic temperature were analyzed according to the proposed equation. For surface cracks, wide ranges of crack-depth to crack-length ratio and crack-depth to specimen-thickness ratio were considered. For through cracks, wide ranges of crack length and specimen width were also considered.-

    Description: A problem in the linear theory of elasticity is considered wherein a layer with a circular cylindrical hole is subjected to a nonuniform axisymmetric radial displacement. The solution utilizes Navier's equations of elasticity which are solved by means of extended Hankel transforms. A special case in which the radial displacement is a linear function of the axial coordinate is presented. Numerical results are given in graphical form for the case when hole radius and layer thickness are equal. The inversion integrals were evaluated numerically using Longman's technique for computing infinite integrals of oscillatory functions.

    Description: The scientific objectives of the Explorer-45 mission are discussed. The primary objective is the study of the ring current responsible for the main phase of magnetic storms. Closely associated with this objective is the determination of the relationship between magnetic storms, substorms, and the acceleration of charged particles in the magnetosphere. Further objectives are the measurement of a wide range of proton, electron and alpha-particle energies, and studies of wave-particle interactions responsible for particle transport and loss in the inner magnetosphere. The orbital parameters, the spacecraft itself, and some of its unique features, such as the data handling system, which is programmable from the ground, are described.

    Description: A simple, inexpensive method for studying slow crack growth is described. The method entails measurements of load relaxation at constant displacement using a double torsion specimen. It is demonstrated that the data generated using this technique are in excellent agreement with data obtained using the more complex conventional techniques, for a range of materials - steel, titanium, glass, aluminum oxide, PMMA. These encouraging initial results suggest that additional and more detailed studies using this test procedure are merited.

    Description: A general design algorithm based on methods of feasible directions is presented. Zoutendijk's method of feasible directions is first presented as applied to structural design. This method is modified to improve numerical stability of the design process and is then further modified to deal efficiently with infeasible designs. The algorithm requires the analytic gradient of the objective function and the constraint functions which are active at a given stage in the design process. Gradient information is not required for nonactive constraints. Complex constraint functions may be ignored in the initial design stages because violation of these constraints is efficiently overcome later in the design process. The algorithm is demonstrated with elastic design of redundant trusses.

    Description: Analysis of the vibration of the internal structure of a relatively simple flight vehicle structural model consisting of a multicellular box in which two parallel outer face plates (skins) are connected together by several internal plates (ribs) which are parallel to each other and normal to the face plates. Such a box is representative of a wing or stabilizer structure. Three representations of the structure were considered in the computation. The simplest model which can account for the coupling between the face plates and the ribs is a two-dimensional assembly of beams. A more realistic, yet still simple, three-dimensional model has been developed using the Rayleigh-Ritz method. The third computational method employed was the NASTRAN finite-element displacement method. The computational results are compared with experimental data.

    Description: Analysis of the variations in orbiter/tank interference heating rates in the Space Shuttle configuration at M numbers up to 19 and Re numbers down to 250,000. Experimental data on heat transfer rate distribution in the tank and on orbiter-induced interference heat transfer factors in the tank are included in diagrams. The data suggest that the primary effect of interference can be a fully developed turbulent boundary layer.

    Description: The problem of fuel-optimal small-angle reorientation of the spin axis of a spinning or dual-spin spacecraft is examined. The results obtained show significant improvements over previously published optimization studies by virtue of the introduction of two innovations: (1) mass-explusion active control is utilized for angular momentum vector pointing only, with passive damping relied upon for stable vehicles to attenuate vehicle coning about the angular momentum vector, so that the task of the active controller changes from spin axis control to angular momentum vector control, and (2) several options are considered for type, number, and location of attitude control jets. The first of these considerations introduces a target set which is a smooth, two-dimensional linear manifold in the four-dimensional state space, whereas previous studies have adopted the origin as the target set. The second innovation amounts to consideration of a spectrum of control restraint sets.

    Description: The effect of the gyroscopic moment on the appearance of a first imaginary critical velocity (minimum negative value of lambda) is investigated and shown to have an important effect on the computation of the first critical velocity. A numerical procedure is developed which can be used for overcoming the difficulties arising when the first real and the first imaginary roots are similar in modulus. As an example, a real shaft with two supports was analyzed. For the computation the real shaft was subdivided into ten sections, and for two of them (representing compressor and turbine) the gyroscopic moment was taken into account. The present method is especially useful when high speed computational facilities are not available.

    Description: Payload benefits to be derived from refurbishment can be related to individual spacecraft programs directly and for planning purposes to the entire shuttle mission model. In the case of the large space telescope program, cost savings obtained through the use of the shuttle for maintenance operations have been estimated to be in the range from 30 to 40%. This saving is realized over an operational lifetime of 15 years by reducing, through refurbishment on orbit, the number of flight units along with 'optimized' reliability goals commensurate with periodic maintenance revisits at one-year intervals. Shuttle-era payload implications are discussed together with a pressurized on-orbit maintenance configuration, an earth observation satellite, and some typical teleoperator-serviced spacecraft.

    Description: This paper briefly describes the cylindrical electrostatic probes to be used on the new Atmosphere Explorer-C, -D, and -E, and outlines the methods to be employed to analyze the experimental data in terms of electron temperature and ion and electron concentration. Two independent cylindrical sensors and partially redundant electronic systems permit greater reliability in measurements. Measurements are made at 1-sec and 2-sec intervals along the orbit. The sensors themselves have been modified from previous applications to cope with the lower electron temperature expected in these low-altitude orbits and to counter possible surface contamination caused by the hydrazine engines used for orbit adjustments.

    Description: The neutral-atmosphere composition experiment instrumentation is designed to obtain in-situ measurements of neutral thermosphere composition from Atmosphere Explorer-C, -D, and -E. The system is based on previously flown OGO-6 and San Marco-3 composition instruments. The mass-spectrometer sensor includes a gold-plated thermalizing chamber and ion source, a hyperbolic rod quadrupole analyzer, and an off-axis electron multiplier. Automatic ion-source sensitivity control and pulse-counting techniques provide density measurement capability from approximately 125 to 1000 km altitude. The normal operating mode includes measurement at all masses in the range of 1 to 44 amu, with emphasis on hydrogen, helium, oxygen, nitrogen, and argon.

    Description: Solutions are given for several plane elastostatic problems of plates having a V-notch on one edge, and subjected to a variety of boundary conditions. The effect of the magnitude of the V-notch angle and specimen geometry on stress intensity factors KI and KII are obtained for unloaded notch surfaces. There is less than one per cent difference in opening model stress intensity factor in going from a zero degree notch angle to a 30 degree notch angle. Notch opening displacements at the plate edge were measured experimentally, and the results obtained were in excellent agreement with the computed results.

    Description: Consideration of Rayleigh wave effects in a homogeneous isotropic linearly elastic half-space subject to an impulsive uniform disk pressure loading. An approximate formula is obtained for the Rayleigh wave effects. It is shown that the Rayleigh waves near the center of loading arise from the portion of the dilatational and shear waves moving toward the axis, after they originate at the edge of the load disk. A study is made of the vertical displacement due to Rayleigh waves at points on the axis near the surface of the elastic half-space.

    Description: Consideration of coupled stress waves generated by an impulsive load applied at one end of a semiinfinite plate. For the field equations governing the one-dimensional coupled waves a hyperbolic system of equations is obtained in which a strong coupling in the second derivatives exists. The method of characteristics described by Chou and Mortimer (1967) is extended to cover the case of strong coupling, and a study is made of the transient stress waves in a semiinfinite plate subjected to an initial step input. Coupled discontinuity fronts are found to propagate at different velocities. The normal plate stress and the bending moment at different time regimes are illustrated by graphs.

    Description: A relay satellite following a halo trajectory will always maintain line-of-sight contact with the earth and the moon's far side. The Integrated Program Plan for lunar exploration in the 1980s and beyond calls for a fully reusable earth-moon transportation system. The principal elements of the system are a Translunar Shuttle, a Lunar-Orbit Space Station or Halo-Orbit Space Station, and a Lunar Space Tug. It is shown that a halo-orbit space station could offer important operational and performance advantages compared to a lunar-orbit station in a second-generation lunar program.

    Description: The flux of molecules emitted by the satellite and subsequently returning to its surface is investigated. The reflection occurs upon collision of these with ambient molecules. The evaluation of this flux is carried out from a knowledge of the outgassing rate of the satellite, its dimensions, and the orbit parameters. Condensation rates and adsorption layers on critical surfaces are calculated from the knowledge of this flux, and from the natures and temperatures of the gas and the surface. The calculation of these parameters, based on estimated and in some cases measured emission rates, has been carried out for a number of satellites. These developed relationships and graphs allow the estimation of several important parameters for an orbiting satellite. This report presents the pressures and densities at various distances from the satellite as produced by the surrounding ambient molecules and by the outgassing of the satellite.

    Description: The optical response to loading of a thin metallic film deposited on a low-modulus structural substrate is studied theoretically and experimentally. Two types of optical properties called total and central-image transmittance (or reflectance) are shown to be related to the mechanical state of the substrate. Empirical optical-mechanical relationships are proposed between these optical properties and the substrate strain field of a general plane-stress problem. A technique based on wrinkle and microfracture patterns is described for determining principal directions of strain. Experimental results for uniaxially loaded specimens show that it is possible to obtain a nearly linear relationship between transmittance and strain for certain materials combinations.

    Description: A lumped-parameter model of a rectangular plate is developed by assuming fundamental mode solutions and using Hamilton's Principle and the Euler equations to set up the differential equation of motion for the system. The plate theory used may be described as the dynamic analogue of the von Karman large-deflection theory. Four sets of symmetrical boundary conditions are considered with the restriction of uniform pressure dynamic loads. The model takes the form of a mass on a cubic-hardening spring with each term defined by algebraic expressions of the plate parameters. The results for some specific problems are compared with two previous solutions. This method is less accurate but simpler to develop and apply.

    Description: A generalized eigenvalue algorithm is presented herein along with the complete listing of the associated computer program, which may be conveniently utilized for the efficient solution of certain broad classes of eigenvalue problems. Extensive applications of the procedure are envisaged in the analysis of many important engineering problems, such as stability and natural frequency analysis of practical discrete structural systems, idealized by the finite element technique. The procedure based on the Sturm sequence method is accurate and fast, possessing several significant advantages over other known methods of such analysis. Numerical results are also presented for two representative structural engineering problems.

    Description: A mixed finite-difference scheme is presented for the stress and free vibration analysis of simply supported nonhomogeneous and layered orthotropic thick plates. The analytical formulation is based on the linear, three-dimensional theory of orthotropic elasticity and a Fourier approach is used to reduce the governing equations to six first-order ordinary differential equations in the thickness coordinate. The governing equations possess a symmetric coefficient matrix and are free of derivatives of the elastic characteristics of the plate. In the finite difference discretization two interlacing grids are used for the different fundamental unknowns in such a way as to reduce both the local discretization error and the bandwidth of the resulting finite-difference field equations. Numerical studies are presented for the effects of reducing the interior and boundary discretization errors and of mesh refinement on the accuracy and convergence of solutions. It is shown that the proposed scheme, in addition to a number of other advantages, leads to highly accurate results, even when a small number of finite difference intervals is used.
