Description: Characteristics of lunar soil are examined. The paper includes topics such as lunar soil genesis, particle types, grain size distribution, grain shape distribution, specific gravity, minimum and maximum density, and relative density. Lunar soil, consisting of complex mixtures of mineral fragments, miscellaneous glasses, agglutinates, and lithic fragments, is produced primarily by meteorite impacts. The grain size distributions for soils exposed to meteorite reworking for 100 million yr or more are classified as well-graded silty sands and sandy silts. The specific gravity of submillimeter lunar soil samples varies from 2.9 to 3.24 and individual particles range from 1.0 to greater than 3.32. Differences in specific gravity, intragranular porosity, particle shape, surface texture, and grain arrangements result in wide ranges in minimum and maximum densities. Meteorite impacts cause in situ lunar soil to have a low relative density at the surface which increases rapidly to a very high relative density at depths greater than 10 cm to 20 cm.

Description: The experimental design and the development of a theory to interpret the experimental data from measurements of the thermal conductivity of lunar core samples. Measurements conducted while the lunar material is still in the core tube reduce the possibility of physical and chemical disturbances to the sample. The sample was heated externally by radiation at a known rate, the variation of temperature was measured at the surface of the core sample, and thermal conductivity was determined by comparing the observed temperature with the theoretically expected one.

Description: A summary is made of various technical and scientific aspects of a Mars surface sample return mission. Particular attention was focused on the question of back contamination. Data are also given on problems inherent in the back contamination issue and return sample mission; areas where additional research is needed were pointed out. Quarantine procedures, safety measures, and sterilization effects on organic-inorganic data, and biological problems were also dealt with.

Description: The nature of the Martian surface was characterized by means of its reflectance properties. The Mariner 9 photography was used to establish terrain units which were crossed by the Mariner 6 and 7 paths. The IR reflectance measured by the IR spectrometers on these spacecraft was to be used to indicate the nature of the surface within these units. There is an indication of physical size and/or compositional variation between units but too many natural parameters can vary (size, shape, composition, adsorbed phases, reradiation, atmospheric absorbtion, temperature gradients, etc.) to be certain what effect is causing those variations observed. It is suggested that the characterization could be fruitfully pursued by a group which was dedicated to peeling back the layers of minutia affecting IR reflectance.
