Description: A definition of the envelope of nonstationary random processes is proposed. The establishment of the envelope definition makes it possible to simulate the nonstationary random envelope directly. Envelope statistics, such as the density function, joint density function, moment function, and level crossing rate, which are relevent to analyses of catastrophic failure, fatigue, and crack propagation in structures, are derived. Applications of the envelope statistics to the prediction of structural reliability under random loadings are discussed in detail.

Description: The latest technology for structural analysis in relation to the design tasks that lie ahead for the space shuttle is reviewed. For shell-of-revolution structures, the analysis can be formulated as a one-dimensional problem which is readily solved by using finite-difference or numerical-integration techniques. For more general asymmetric shells, a two-dimensional formulation is required. However, the governing equations are readily formulated and are amenable to solution by finite-difference techniques. For a completely general structural arrangement, such as structural frameworks, recourse is usually made to discretized formulations using finite elements. Of course, the finite-element programs could be used for shell structures, but at a loss in accuracy and increase in computer time compared with the special purpose programs.

Description: The problem of inverse scattering at fixed angular momentum is considered. The problem is particularized to the case of nonlocal separable interactions. A brief survey of the inverse problem for nonlocal separable interactions is presented. This problem can be solved exactly by integration. It amounts to solving singular integral equations of the Hilbert-Mushkhelishvili type, which have been studied extensively in the past and appear in many areas of physics, including theory of elasticity and dispersions relations in high energy physics.

Description: A brief survey of recent theoretical progress on the inverse scattering problem for radiation scattering from reflective boundaries and variable indices of refraction. The theory of radiation scattering is concerned primarily with the far-field relations between incident and scattered radiation in the presence of a scattering object. The primary, or direct, problem of this theory is to develop quantitative information about these scattering relations from a knowledge of the scattering object. The secondary, or inverse, problem, on the other hand, is to determine the nature of the object from an analysis of the scattering relations.

Description: The Boltzmann equation is considered in terms of the problem of relaxation of some initial distribution function which depends only on velocities, to Maxwell's distribution function. The Boltzmann equation is given for the relaxation problem in which the distribution function f(t, u, v) is time dependent and is also dependent on two other variables u and v (the velocities of rigid spherical molecules). An iteration process is discussed in which the velocity space u, v is subdivided into squares, the distribution function in each square being approximated by the second-order surface from the values of the distribution function at nine points. The set of all of these points forms a network of u, v values at the nodes of which the distribution function can be found.

Description: The temporal behavior is considered of a quiescent mixture of gases of different temperatures with spatially uniform distribution. The process of heating a cold gas by a hot gas is treated on the basis of the Boltzmann kinetic equation. The mixture is assumed to be composed of absolutely hard smooth spheres, and the initial distribution functions for each gas is taken to the Maxwellian. With such a choice of initial distribution functions, it is shown that the solution of the Boltzmann kinetic equation depends only on the velocity modulus and the time.

Description: The methods are reviewed which are utilized in principal attempts to obtain the numerical solution or modeling of the Boltzmann equation over a broad range of Knudsen numbers. The primary methods considered are the Monte Carlo and the discrete velocities methods. The conculsions drawn from the analysis include the following: (1) The Monte Carlo methods are not well suited in the area of small Knudsen numbers. (2) Among the Monte Carlo methods, the Bird method appears to be the most attractive, since it is more directly related to the Boltzmann equation. (3) The deterministic methods, which include the discrete ordinate technique, offer great possibilities but require exceedingly large computer times. (4) The use of approximating equations in combination with the discrete velocities method will possibly improve computation time and reduce the required memory volume.

Description: Various theoretical models are discussed for the interaction of gaseous atoms with solids at energies of approximately 10 eV. The surface is modeled by a one- and three-dimensional aggregate of atoms with different initial conditions and lattice parameters. In calculating the accommodation coefficients, the direct integration of the equations of motion of gaseous molecules and atoms in the crystal lattice of the solid is used. An analysis of the advantages and the drawbacks of the models, as well as the possibilities of the analytical solutions in a one-dimensional case, is given. The dependence of the energy and the normal and the tangential momenta accommodation coefficients on the collision parameters is obtained.

A method of approximating the collision frequency is discussed along with a method for approximating the moments of the Boltzmann collision integral. Since the return collisions integral and the collision frequency are expressed through the distribution function moments, use of the proposed methods make it possible to reduce the Boltzmann equation to a series of approximating equations.

Description: Chemically reacting gas mixtures are considered for the case in which inelastic collisions occur significantly less frequently than elastic ones. The first approximation of the general solution of the Boltzmann equation is developed and is shown to contain an additional scaler term. The concentration, the mean mass velocity, and the temperature of the mixture are determined and the rate of reaction in the first approximation is formulated. Tables are presented which give reaction rate values obtained by both the first and second approximation for different activation energies. The tables show that the first approximation is sufficient for practical purposes for calculating the reaction rate.

Description: The principal difficulties in numerical solution of the Boltzmann equation are considered. The study is aimed at formulating a numerical solution in such a manner that it contains a minimum amount of excess information at the distribution function level. It is pointed out that the accurate calculation of the distribution function at each point in phase space requires a tremendous number of operations, due to the necessity of solving five-fold quadratures in the collision integral. This results in the operational memory of the digital computer being insufficient to store all the data on the distribution functions at the necessary points in phase space. An algorithm is constructed involving successive iterations of the Boltzmann equation which does not require storage of each step of the new distribution function.

Two analytical methods and one numerical method for solving this problem are presented. All these methods utilize the reflection coefficient measured as a function of the angular spectrum variable. This allows measurements at a fixed frequency, and these methods, therefore, can be used when the medium being studied is dispensive. A few examples are provided and some comments are made regarding the stability of solutions obtained using the various methods.

Consideration is given to inverse problems of the earth, represented in the idealized form of a single scaler function of a single coordinate. The difference between the functional for the real earth and the functional for some model is formulated. A procedure is given for using the linear relationships between the differences in the data and the differences in the model as side conditions. Through a process of diagonalization a model is created that fits the data. The data are culled by accepting only those relative standard errors that are less than 100 percent.

Description: The analytic solution to the linear inverse problem provides estimates of the uncertainty of the solution in terms of standard deviations of corrections to a particular solution, resolution of parameter adjustments, and information distribution among the observations. It is shown that Monte Carlo inversion, when properly executed, can provide all the same kinds of information for nonlinear problems. Proper execution requires a relatively uniform sampling of all possible models. The expense of performing Monte Carlo inversion generally requires strategies to improve the probability of finding passing models. Such strategies can lead to a very strong bias in the distribution of models examined unless great care is taken in their application.

Description: The quantum mechanical theory of scattering of a particle by a spherically symmetrical potential is presented. As in the inverse scattering problem, the input of the calculation is the scattering and bound-state data, and the output is data on the potential. The results discussed are explicit expressions for the values of the potential and its derivatives at the origin in terms of the scattering and boundstate data. Various methods to obtain these results are outlined. The presentation is aimed at introducing these various approaches. The simplest scattering problem (nonrelativistic S-wave scattering on a holomorphic potential without bound states) is used as the basis for discussion, and technicalities are omitted whenever possible without loss of clarity. A complete compilation is given of the results obtained to date in this field, including the treatment of higher partial waves and the Klein-Gordon and Dirac equations.
