Summary 1. Reactions of the energy-yielding metabolism have been studied on several tissues of the crayfish Cambarus affinis Say. This was accomplished by determination of the activities of the enzymes hexokinase, glycerolphosphate dehydrogenase, lactate dehydrogenase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, “condensing enzyme”, isocitrate dehydrogenase, malate dehydrogenase, “malic enzyme” and phosphoglucomutase in hepatopancreas, antennal gland, gills, hind-gut, testes, hypodermis, abdominal muscle, heart, cerebral ganglion, stomach and blood serum. In addition, the O2-uptake of homogenates prepared from hepatopancreas, antennal gland, gills, hind-gut, heart and testes has been measured in the presence of glucose, glucose-6-phosphate, acetate, lactate, β-hydroxybutyrate, pyruvate, α-oxoglutarate, succinate, glutamate and glycerol-1-phosphate. 2. The tissues exhibit distinct differences in activity of enzymes as well as in the capacity of oxidative utilization of the substrates mentioned. A characterization of each tissue with regard to these properties is given. 3. High activities of the enzymes of glycolysis or citric acid cycle respectively were found in antennal gland, hind-gut, abdominal muscle, cerebral ganglion and heart. The activities are low in hepatopancreas, gills, hypodermis, stomach, testes and blood serum. Carbohydrate catabolism obviously follows the glycolytic pathway in abdominal muscle and, to a lesser extent, in cerebral ganglion. On the other hand the gills reveal the most oxidative catabolism of all organs tested. 4. The activity of hexokinase is highest in antennal gland and hindgut, very low in hepatopancreas and abdominal muscle. Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity is high in antennal gland and testes, very low in heart and abdominal muscle. 5. In general the results of enzyme determinations are supported by the manometric measurements of oxidative substrate utilization. It could be demonstrated that lactate is oxidized exclusively by heart homogenate.
Notes:
