Description / Table of Contents: Examination of the hardening of filled duroplastics through non - destructive testing of the dynamo-elastic properties in the fatigue testThe examination of the dynamo-elastic properties of filled duroplastics as a function of frequency and temperature, subjecting bar-shaped specimens to the bending fatigue test, has shown that this method is well suited for measuring the hardening process due to progressive crosslinking until the material has finally hardened. The method yields data which not only corroborate but also greatly expand the results obtained with other methods. With the aid of this method, it becomes possible to assess the suitability of such resins for specific technical applications, e.g. for acid-resistant apparatus. In the present contribution, this is exemplified by investigating the suitability of a filled phenol resin and a filled furan resin as bonding agents for the brick-lining of steel vessels. By means of the fatigue test, it is possible to obviate the need for lengthy investigations during the development of new products so that the experimental period can be curtailed.

Description / Table of Contents: Watch out for bacterial corrosion in refineriesCorrosion in underground structures, cooling systems and storage facilities of the petroleum industry is often due to microorganisms which may destroy organic coatings, form  -  by metabolism  -  aggressive acids and  -  by oxidation of iron  -  produce slimy deposits under which there are favorable conditions for the growth of anaerobic bacteria; such deposits may further give rise to aeration cells which, too enhance corrosion. Growth conditions in the soil are often improved by digging operations. For combatting this type of corrosion bactericides should be used first (chlorine, chlorphenols ets.) however, care should be taken because of the possible agressivity of such products. For preventing bacterial corrosion, porefree coatings are most suitable (in addition to the purification of the medium) as regards cathodic protection, a direct effect on bacterial corrosion has not been established so far.
