Description: Closed-form expressions and tables composed from these expressions are presented for complete and partial conic and spheric bodies at combined angles of attack and sideslip in Newtonian flow. Aerodynamic coefficients of these bodies are tabulated for various body segments over a range of angles of attack from 1 deg to 85 deg and angles of sideslip from 0 deg to 15 deg. Some comparisons between Newtonian predictions and hypersonic experimental aerodynamic characteristics were made for conic bodies hawing various surface slopes, nose bluntnesses, and body cross sections to indicate the range of validity of the theory. In general, the theory is shown to agree quite well with experimental results for sharp-nose complete cones and for configurations hawing large blunted noses and steep surface slopes. However, agreement between theory and experiment generally is poor for the more slender, slightly blunted complete or half conic bodies and also for sharp-nose half conic bodies where real-flow phenomena such as forebody interference, viscous forces, leeward surface contributions, or leading-edge pressure reductions may have significant effect. The agreement between theory and experiment for the bodies considered can be improved by using the stagnation pressure coefficient behind a normal shock rather than 2 as the Newtonian coefficient, although for the sharp-nose half conic bodies there i s no theoretical justification for this modification.

Description: The performance and static stability and control characteristics of the Ryan Flex-Wing airplane were determined in an investigation conducted in the Langley full-scale tunnel through an angle-of-attack range of the keel from about 14 to 44 deg. for power-on and -off conditions. Comparisons of the wind-tunnel data with flight-test data obtained with the same airplane by the Ryan Aeronautical Company were made in a number of cases.

Description: Dr. Chapman's lecture examines the physics behind spacecraft entry into planetary atmospheres. He explains how scientists determine if a planet has an atmosphere and how scientists can compute deceleration when the atmospheric conditions are unknown. Symbols and equations used for calculations for aerodynamic heating and deceleration are provided. He also explains heat transfer in bodies approaching an atmosphere, deceleration, and the use of ablation in protecting spacecraft from high temperatures during atmospheric entry.

Description: Measurements have been made in air at two Mach numbers of the static stability, normal force, and drag of a version of the fifth-stage Scout entry vehicle. The most significant result was that the design center of gravity led to a condition of static instability at small angles of attack at Mach number 17. At this Mach number, the static stability was a highly nonlinear function of the angle of attack. A useful method for analyzing free-flight data having this nonlinear behavior is included in this report. Comparisons were made between the measured aerodynamic coefficients and those estimated by Newtonian impact theory and by a method developed by Seiff and Whiting. The latter method gave good estimates of the normal-force-curve slope at both Mach numbers and of the moment-curve slope at the lower Mach number. It resulted in an overestimation of the static stability at Mach number 17, although it gave results decidedly closer to the experimental value than did Newtonian impact theory.

Description: In order to incorporate the advantages of ballistic range testing with the convenience of wind tunnel testing, simplified techniques have been developed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) for free-flight testing of models in a conventional wind tunnel. So far, only a small number of the many possibilities have been investigated, but the preliminary results indicate that such techniques are both practical and useful. The model to be investigated is suspended on a single traverse wire at the upstream end of the test section window, then is released from this position by causing the wire to break within the model. High speed motion pictures taken of the model oscillating during its travel across the viewing area make it possible to determine various aerodynamic parameters such as drag, lift, pitching moment, and pitch damping in much the same manner as is done in ballistic range testing. Also, a spark schlieren photograph can be taken of the model in flight in order to observe details of an undisturbed (from support interference) wake.

Description: Multiple wind tunnel test trials were conducted on a 30 degree conical ribbon parachute with porosities of 30, 27, and 24 percent. Variables were Mach number, dynamic pressure, towline length, and coefficient of drag. A Rotofoil parachute having a porosity of approximately 24 percent was tested, but failed after about 30 seconds of operation at a Mach number of 1.8 All of the parachutes had a nominal diameter and shroud line length of 10 inches. Drag coefficients were based on the area of a circle having a diameter two-thirds of the nominal parachute diameter.

Description: An investigation was conducted in the Langley 16-foot transonic tunnel to determine the interference from four exhaust jets on the aerodynamic characteristics of a model of a V/STOL airplane. The single- engine four-jet turbofan power plant of the airplane was simulated by inducing tunnel airflow through two large side inlets and injecting the decomposition products of hydrogen peroxide into the internal flow. The heated gas mixture was exhausted through four nozzles located on the sides of the fuselage under the wing, two near the wing leading edge and two forward of the trailing edge; the nozzles were deflected downward 1.5 deg and outward 5.0 deg to simulate cruise conditions. The wing of the model was a clipped delta with leading-edge sweep of 40 deg, aspect ratio of 3.06, taper ratio of 0.218, thickness-chord ratio of 0.09 at the root and 0.07 at the tip, and 10 deg negative dihedral. Aerodynamic and longitudinal stability coefficients were obtained for the model with the tail removed, and for horizontal-tail incidences of 0 deg and -5 deg. Data were obtained at Mach numbers from 0.60 to 1.00, angles of attack from 0 deg to 12 deg, and with jet total-pressure ratios up to 3.1. Jet operation generally caused a decrease in lift, an increase in pitching-moment coefficient, and a decrease in longitudinal stability at subsonic speeds. The jet interference effects on drag were detrimental at a Mach number of 0.60 and favorable at higher speeds for cruising-flight attitudes.

Notes: The steady-state flow of viscose in a capillary tube viscometer was investigated to determine the rheological properties of this fluid as a function of cellulose concentration and molecular weight. It was found that the flow consistency index increased with increasing cellulose content at constant molecular weight. The flow behavior index was not affected under these conditions. At constant cellulose content, the flow behavior index was found to decrease as the molecular weight of the cellulose molecule was increased. Steady-state velocity profiles for viscose flowing in a round tube under laminar conditions are also presented as a function of the flow behavior index.

Notes: An apparatus for polyvinyl chloride thermal degradation under isothermal conditions and in a controlled atmosphere is described with precision. Continuous measurement of loss of weight of the sample under degradation and, at the same time, continuous titration of hydrochloric acid evolved, can be carried out. The apparatus consists essentially of a magnetically equilibrated Ugine-Eyraud balance, in which runs a purified gas stream that picks up volatile products in an argentimetric titration cell, coupled to a titrimeter and recorder. Total precision of simultaneous measurements is 1%. An example of the experimental results is given.

Notes: For a commercial polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polymerized in suspension, decomposition kinetics were studied in a nitrogen atmosphere and isothermal conditions, from 150 to 250°C., by measuring simultaneously loss of hydrochloric acid and loss of weight. Below 200°C., hydrochloric acid is the only volatile product freed; reaction is zero order and activation energy is 20 kcal./mole HCl. Active centers are mainly end chains of unsaturated structures. The reaction is terminated by mutual destruction of radicals, creating crosslinks. Above 200°C., when the degree of dehydrochlorination is high enough, a minor difference is observed between loss of weight and hydrochloric acid loss. The reaction is autoaccelerated and can be classified as a degenerated branching chain reaction. It is suggested that activation of irregular structures, initially present or created during the course of the reaction, and thus responsible for autocatalysis, provides active centers for chain dehydrochlorination. Some of these structures are active at temperatures lower than that of their formation. Each kind of structure is believed to be at the origin of a radical zero-order chain reaction; its activation energy depends on its type. The reaction chains are terminated by inactivate irregular structures.

Notes: Essentially the entire surface of the U. S. Air Force B-58 supersonic bomber is aluminum-bonded panel construction. Primary as well as secondary structural bonded panels were designed and manufactured to operate under demanding service conditions which include high stress, subzero temperature, high temperature, and severe acoustical vibration. Smooth surfaces are an additional requirement at subsonic and supersonic speeds. These requirements demanded that bonded joints in the B-58 be carefully designed and thoroughly evaluated. Joints in the B-58 were designed by “empirical procedures,” established for a specific adhesive syetem. Large numbers of test panels were required to confirm panel integrity and establish allowables for design. The development and adoption of accurate theoretical technique for predicting joint streqgths has been pursued and can be expected to reduce both the cost and the amount of testing required to achieve reliable deign with adhesives.

Notes: In this paper the subject of peel is divided into two parts: (1) A mathematical determination of peeling stresses in an adhesive bond due to the applied peeling loads which leads to a mathematical definition of “peel strength.” (2) A review of suitable peel test methods examined in the light of this definition. Employing the assumption that the adhesive bond behaves as an ideal homogeneous elastic material under load, the classical derivation of the deflection of a loaded beam on an elastic foundation is applied to the calculation of peel strength of a metal adhesive. This theory results in a mathematical definition of peel strength and offers a reasonable explanation of the effects of the important variables such as metal and adhesive thickness and strength properties and provides a basis for the comparison and evaluation of the few testing methods presently in use.

Notes: Loading a lap joint in tension causes the adherends to increase their tensile stress over the nominal because of the bending produced by the offset of the joint. Knowing the configuration of the joint and the tensile stress, the stress distribution in the adherends outside the joint can be determined. The theory, with resulting equations, is based on the assumption that the adherends act like a plate bent to a cylindrical surface. If the bending of the adherends is eliminated by the use of a double overlap joint, the stress distribution in the adhesive can be determined. This analysis is based on existing mathematical findings of the load distribution in riveted joints. The resulting equations have been proven experimentally by the use of the photo stress technique, and can be applied to adhesively bonded, soldered, brazed, welded, and under certain conditions, riveted joints.

Notes: If an adhesive joint is to be strong and permanent its adherend surfaces must be treated at least to remove oil, dirt, and dust. In addition, control of surface roughness, oxide formations, and sometimes adsorbed water is required. Deposition of chromium atoms or TiO2 is indicated for electron donor metals surfaces, and treatments may be useful to protect the adhesive from the adherend or vice versa, or to make their structures more congenial.

Notes: Structural adhesives are one of the more important developments in the adhesives field because they make possible bonded assemblies in lightweight structures which take full advantage of the strengths of the materials used. Structural adhesives can be divided into two classes. One class consists of hard brittle resins typified by unmodified epoxy adhesives which have high shear and tensile strengths but low peel strength. The second class consists of a combination of resins resulting in a more ductile type of adhesive which has high peel strength along with high shear and tensile strength. One application is described here in which an epoxy adhesive is used in a design which minimizes peel forces and which causes failure of the bonded assembly in the metal. The evaluation of this design showed it to be successful.

Notes: This paper discusses the technology of adhesives employed in printed circuitry. The chemical types of adhesives are described and their general characteristics are given. Typical printed circuit processes are used to spotlight the demands placed on the adhesives. Test methods and requirements peculiar to printed circuitry are discussed in detail, and particular emphasis is placed on those properties which will not be too obvious to the adhesives technologist unfamiliar with circuitry. Secondary applications of adhesives in printed circuitry are touched on briefly, and mention is made of bonding methods in use or under development which do not employ adhesives. Numerous literature references are given.

Notes: Although considerable research has been conducted to establish the performance of various adhesives under different conditions of service, much remains to be done. Of great importance are basic studies of the mechanisms of deterioration of adhesives in joints under known conditions so that reliable short-term performance tests may be devised to determine the expected performance of adhesives under various service conditions. Such research needs will undoubtedly be increased in importance by the continued introduction of new adhesives of different chemical types. In all probability, the nature of the adherend influences not only initial adhesion but also subsequent joint performance. Most experience reported here on permanence of joints has been gained with wood, but research on metal adhesives is also reviewed.

Notes: Special adhesives for bonding of unvulcanized and vulcanized elastomers are discussed. Major emphasis is placed on adhesives and conditions for bonding of vulcanized elastomers. The decline of brass plating is reviewed. Various methods of adhesion testing are discussed and illustrated. Available organic polymer based adhesives will produce high strength bonds to a wide variety of unvulcanized olefinic elastomers. A single coat adhesive has been developed which provides “maximum performance adhesive bonds” to a variety of unvulcanized elastomers. Factors affecting bonding and “bondability index” for the common elastomers are described. The bonding of vulcanized elastomers is a more difficult task. Present adhesives require mechanical or chemical modification of the surface of the elastomer. Brute force tactics used in conjunction with epoxy-polyamide, phenolic-polyvinyl formal, or nitrilephenolic systems have performed well in some applications. The quality of these bonds, however, does not equal those produced to unvulcanized elastomers. With cooperation of the users, the adhesive suppliers are developing newer, more effective products to meet the challenge of the advanced polymers and increasingly severe environments in which they are used.

Notes: (1) The prognosis for adhesives uieful up to an hour at 1000°F., in air, is good. (2) Organic adhesives based on phenolic and silicone-phenolic resins are more capable than expected of usefulness at 1000°F. (3) Preparation of semiinorganic adhesives by reaction of heat stable organic polymers with inorganic reagents is feasible. (4) The prospect appears excellent for the achievement of adhesives to be used for 1000 hr. at 500°F., in air, on steel. (5) Despite research on 2000°F. adhesives, effort is still urgently needed on materials for use at lower temperatures. (6) Perhaps the area with the most serious shortage of information and research is the development and testing of adhesives for use at 180-500°F. for periods of three to five years. Both military and civilian agencies are planning the construction of supersonic transports which need such structural adhesives.

Notes: Methods by which synthetic adhesives can be cured at ambient temperatures are covered. The alkyl cyanoacrylates, epoxies, and MPL monomers can be cured, with little shrinkage, to obtain metal adhesive bonds which compare favorably to those obtained by high temperature modes of curing. An investigation by which novolac epoxies were rendered more flexible with accompanying increases in the temperature and salt spray resistance is described.

Notes: Rapid technological advancements have contributed to the increasing application of adhesives. Because of these accomplishments, because of continuing materials research and process development activities, and because of their inherent advantages, adhesives have a great potential for the future. Requirements for the future impose a severe challenge on developmental capabilities. More severe structural requirements and environmental conditions may be expected. Because of increasing complexity and costs, there are requirements for significantly higher orders of reliability and lower fabrication costs. Improvements in bonding processes and development of comparatively new techniques are desirable. Test methods require further development and standardization - especially nondestructive methods. Continuing work in collecting and reporting pertinent information, especially on properties and design parameters for adhesive bonding is helping to advance the utilization of adhesives. Current trends indicate that adhesives are progressing from the realm of “art” to science, a factor which should substantially aid in advancing the future potential for adhesives.

Description / Table of Contents: Morphological structure and formation of cracks in crystallizing macromolecular materialsAfter a brief survey of present-day knowledge of morphological structures (laminations, fibrels and spherulites), the author discusses the tests carried out to obtain some knowledge about the internal crack system of macro-molecular materials with the aid of permeation and diffusion measurements on terylene films as a function of the degree of crystallisation and of temperature. It is found that, with careful thermal and mechanical treatment, it is quite possible to avoid the formation of major continuous cracks and a corresponding degree of corrosion proneness.Cracks may occur if the crystallisation process is continued for too long a time at too high temperatures. In this case, microscopic examinations or X-ray crystal density methods may be applied. The last section deals with tests carried out to explore the formation of cracks in coarse-crystalline iso-tactic polypropylene, caused by wetting agents. Cracks are found to occur partly already during crystallisation, and partly during the subsequent cooling; they occur in the direction of the spherulite radii as well as along the grain boundaries.

Description / Table of Contents: The mechanical properties of metallic materials at low temperaturesKnowledge of the behaviour of metallic materials subjected to mechanical stresses at low temperatures is gaining in importance. Especially in refrigeration technology, e. g. in connection with the liquefaction, storage and transport of gases, one tries to use materials which, while being as inexpensive as possible, retain their strength properties even under unfavourable stress conditions at low temperatures. Under such conditions, both the deformation resistance and the variables characterizing the deformability depend on the crystal structure. It has been possible to achieve a great expansion in the use o f non-alloyed structural steels through the application a1 a special metallurgical treatment of the melts, e. g. through reduction of the quantity of gas dissolved. The range of application of these steels which, depending on the strain and on the possible consequences of fractures, reaches as far as -50° C, is followed by the range of heat-treated alloyed steels which goes down to -120° C. For even lower temperatures, austenitic steels can be used. Because fo their anisotropic behaviour, especially at low temperatures, cast iron/carbon alloys such as cast steel are more fracture-prone than hot-processed materials, unless the irregularities in the stress absorption capacity are largely overcome by suitable annealing treatments. Whilst, in particular, non-alloyed cast iron tends to show, at low temperatures, a reduction in strength when exposed to sudden stresses, both copper and aluminium alloys retain their high impact strength even at very low temperatures.

Description / Table of Contents: The progress of condensation in the testor (Kesternich) cabinet and the dependence of condensation on the properties of the tested materialCondensation in the tested cabinet proceeds in principle as follows: (a)Rapid increase to a first maximum, which depends on the tested material, and in the case of the same material on the thickness of the test piece.(b)Slowly rising undulated curve, the maxima of which coincide with the temperature maxima on the surface of the test piece and those of the period of regulation. The rate of increase is hardly dependent on the material and its thickness. The amplitude of the waves increases with increasing heat capacity of the material.Condensation ist stronger on metal than on glass and organic coatings; stranger on zinc than on cadmium. No influence of the roughness of the surface could be detected. The influence of the material on the condensation confirms previous results by Tammann.

Description / Table of Contents: Causes of scale formationContinuous operation of many appliances is impeded by scale formation which is most frequently encountered on heat transmitting surfaces. The present article deals with crystalline scale formed by dissolved substances on metallic materials.A theoretical section, dealing with the influence on scale formation of such factors as pressure, temperature, extraneous matter, flow velocity and condition of the solid surface, is followed by the description of experimental investigations. The phenomenon investigated as a model is the crystallisation in radioactively marked CaSo4 solution (Ca45 and S35, respectively). The experiments show, in keeping with the theory, that macroscope scale can only appear when the solution is over-saturated. There are no essential differences as between corrosive and non-corrosive materials, the formation of blisters on the solid surface tends to promote scale formation. In this connection, the roughness of the solid surface is likewise of importance. The experimental results give rise to certain practical conclusions.

Description / Table of Contents: Using auto-radiograms for the investigation of phenomena on metal surfacesFor the examination of boundary layer phenomena on solid surfaces, radio-active isotopes can be used with advantage. In this connection, the local distribution of radiating matter can be ascertained with the aid of auto-radiograms.The present article deals with the use of auto-radiograms for studying the separation and adsorption phenomena on metal surfaces. Special attention is paid to the influence of grain boundaries, displacements and orientations of the crystallites as well as the influence of macroscopic roughness on the adsorption of aqueous electrolyte solutions. The tests were carried out with β radiating isotopes 147 Pm and 204 T1.The auto-radiograms show that any zones of disturbance and any inhomogeneities on a solid metal surface are the first to be covered with radio-active substance. It is, for instance, found that increased adsorption takes place at grain boundaries and points of displacement. It is also shown that the separation is influenced by the orientation of the crystallites. The test results give rise to the conclusion that auto-radiograms can also be used for the clarification of other boundary layer phenomena.
So beobachtet man z.

Description / Table of Contents: The influence of frequencies on the impedance of inhibitor films on iron in acidsApparatus is described for the exact measurement of the impedances of oxide and inhibitor films on metal surfaces and for the simultaneous determination of the film resistances and capacitances of inhibitor films as a function of the a. c. frequency. It was found that inhibitor films on metals show exactly the same behaviour as oxide films. The resistance theory of the inhibitor effect, formulated by W. Machu, has again been confirmed.

Description / Table of Contents: The mutual effects of corrosion protection and limeCathodically protected steel parts buried in the ground affect lime and are affected by it if these parts are either coated with lime milk or if, being uncoated, they are buried in calcareous soil. Systematic tests have shown that the cathodic corrosion protection can be decisively influenced by these factors. A lime concentration on the surface of cathodically protected installations may, inter alia, give rise to certain favourable herbicide and insecticide properties. The minimum potentials required to a reliable cathodic corrosion protection in soil containing an excess of lime are stated.

Description / Table of Contents: Increased stress on the steel structure in the vicinity of the groundWith a steel structure, the coatings near the ground are more exposed to corrosion than other areas of the structure, due to snow, ice, splashing water and dirt deposits which absorb moisture. To obtain uniform protection for all surfaces, it is desirable to strengthen the zone in the vicinity of the ground by an additional coat, preferably of a bituminous type.
