Beschreibung: The ‘Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen’ is a dune area near Haarlem in the calcareous Dune district. Since 1851 it is the water catchment area of Amsterdam. Due to the lowering of the groundwater level the moist dune slacks have disappeared gradually. Since 1957 infiltration of water from the river Rhine takes place for the water supply of Amsterdam. This water, rich in nutrients, causes among others a ruderal vegetation of high forbs and poor in species instead of the former species-rich dune slack vegetation. Since about 1970 locally a divergent vegetation is developing. In the so-called Groot Zwarteveld not only dune slack species have established, but also a number of species characteristic for dunes poor in lime and nutrients: Empetrum nigrum, Erica tetralix, Dryopteris cristata, Osmunda regalis and some Sphagnum species. The most remarkable species is Sphagnum imbricatum, which has been refound in the Netherlands after a long period of (seeming?) absence. It was its first observation in the Dune district. The species mentioned were not known from this dune area in former times. This vegetation development is a result of the new habitat. Firstly this dune area is superficially decalcified, stimulated by former agricultural management owing to which the humus content of the soil has increased. Secondly a layer of nutrient-poor rainwater has been formed on the nutrient-rich riverwater. This is caused by the very slow water movement in this area (without drains) and also by the small groundwater fluctuations (contrarily to most other places with a rapid water movement through the soil and great fluctuations in the groundwater). An important fact is that the vegetation is mown annually since 1974. A similar vegetation development takes place in other parts of the Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen where similar habitats have originated.

Beschreibung: In the list of new records of rare species the categories \xe2\x80\x98adventitious species\xe2\x80\x99 and \xe2\x80\x98species escaped from cultivation\xe2\x80\x99 are no longer kept separate from the Dutch species. Species which are purposedly introduced as seeds (for oil or birds) or fruit (for human consumption) are no longer regarded as adventitious and are not mentioned any more in the list. Only true adventitious species are mentioned when at least ten localities are known within the last 15 years. The same holds true for species escaped from cultivation. Interesting new records are mentioned of Lycopodium tristachyum and L. annotinum, of various ferns in the IJsselmeerpolders, of Herminium monorchis. Orchis morio and Schoenus nigricans; Apium repens is not yet extinct; new records of Eriophorum gracile, Campanula glomerata and Viola persicifolia are mentioned; and Carex lepidocarpa, once found in 1912, has been rediscovered.

Beschreibung: Since Darwin\'s (1854) description of 11 varieties of Megabalanus tintinnabulum (Linnaeus) [as Balanus tintinnabulum], 26 Recent taxa have been assigned to the genus. In this review, two taxa confounded by Darwin are reestablished [i.e., M. crispatus (Schroter) and M. dorbignii (Chenu)].\nM. antillensis (Pilsbry) and M. intermedius (Darwin) are placed in synonymy with M. tintinnabulum sensu stricto. M. galapaganus (Pilsbry) is synonymized with M. peninsularis (Pilsbry) and M. xishaensis Xianqui & Liu is considered a synonym of M. occator. Diagnoses and an illustrated key to the species are presented. Lectotypes are designated for M. tintinnabulum, M. crispatus, M. dorbignii, M. coccopoma (Darwin), M. spinosus (Chenu), M. validus (Darwin), and M. ajax (Darwin).

Beschreibung: The name conviva group is proposed for a group of five species of the genus Baeturia St\xc3\xa5l, 1866, from the Moluccas and the Vogelkop peninsula (= Tjendrawasih), New Guinea. The monophyletic origin of this group is made plausible. Three of the species (B. conviva, B. quadrifida and B. schulzi) are redescribed, while two (B. laureli and B. hardyi) are described as new. For B. schulzi a lectotype is designated. B. hirsuta Bl\xc3\xb6te, 1960 is brought into the synonymy of B. quadrifida Walker, 1868. A key to the males and a map of the distributions are presented. Biogeographical data of this group suggest an Outer Melanesian Arc distribution.

Beschreibung: Breeding success and growth of young of Long-tailed Skuas were investigated in Northeast Greenland at Kap Stewart in 1973 and 1974, at Ugleelv and K\xc3\xa6relv in 1975, and at K\xc3\xa6relv in 1979. Territorial pair density was positively correlated with the percentage snow-free area in June. In 1973, estimated mean egg production per territorial pair was 1.4, but no young hatched. Egg loss was due to predation by Arctic Foxes, Alopex lagopus. In 1974 no eggs were produced due to scarcity of food on the tundra. In 1975 and 1979, estimated mean egg production per territorial pair was 1.2 and 1.9, respectively, and young did hatch, but none of them fledged. In both these years two-thirds of overall egg and chick mortality was caused by Arctic Foxes. Survival time of clutches and young in the different breeding years was negatively correlated with the number of foxes per unit of snow-free area. High breeding success of Long-tailed Skuas in Northeast Greenland occurs only in years with moderate to high food availability, a relatively low number of foxes and early to rather early disappearance of snow cover. Chicks gained weight rapidly from the first day to 12 or 13 days after hatching, when fast growth of culmen and tarsus stopped, and growth of wing slowed down. During the first two weeks in 1975 first-hatched chicks were heavier than second-hatched chicks of the same age and single chicks were similar to first-hatched chicks. The two longest surviving chicks reached an age of 24 and 25 days, at which time they had not yet fledged. Chicks and parents showed a circadian rhythm with greatest activity during the day and a period of sleep during the night in which the sun does not set at this latitude. The female stayed closer to the young than the male, but the male provided food more frequently.

Beschreibung: Based on new material collected in 1983, 1984, and 1985, the genus Pseudoniphargus proves to be distributed in northern Spain from Asturias, in the western part of the Cordillera Cantabrica, to Navarra and Huesca, in the headlands of the Pyrenees; and from coastal Atlantic regions up to the northern border of the Meseta. A total of 13 species are recognized, of which 11 are new. They are not only found in cave waters, but also in springs, hyporheic habitats, and wells.\nThe species are allopatric in distribution; burgensis n. sp., eborarius n. sp., unisexualis Stock, 1980, and spiniferus n. sp. are known from single localities only; jereanus n. sp., gorbeanus n. sp., vasconiensis n. sp., incantatus n. sp., and guernicae n. sp. have more or less small distribution ranges; longicarpus n. sp., semielongatus n. sp., and montanus n. sp. are distributed in the underflows of some adjacent rivers; and finally elongatus Stock, 1980 has a large distribution, particularly in caves.\nMorphological differences between the species are in general small, characters considered of major diagnostic importance are found in gnathopod 2, coxal plates, basis and claws of pereiopods 5 to 7, uropod 3, and telson.
