Beschreibung: In a recent paper V.I. Krassovsky (1958) predicts the occurrence of clusters of large numbers of atoms and molecules around ions in the interstellar gas. He then proposes a number of physicochemical processes that would be considerably enhanced by the high particle density in such clusters. In particular, he suggests that absorption by negative ions formed in the clusters would account for the interstellar extinction without any necessity for the presence of grains. Because of the important consequences that ion clusters could have, it is necessary to examine their occurrence more fully. This note re-examines the formation of ion clusters in space and shows that even ion-molecule pairs are essentially non-existent. Ion clusters have been considered by Bloom and Margenau (1952) from the same point of view as that used by Krassovsky, whose basic reference (Joffe and Semenov 1933) unfortunately is not available. A different approach has been used by Eyring, Hirschfelder, and Taylor (1936) following the methods of chemical equilibrium. Both the references cited here enable one to conclude that clustering is negligible. Therefore, the treatment of Eyring et al. is more appropriate than the method of Bloom and Margenau, which depends on the statistical equilibrium of an atmosphere in a force field.

Beschreibung: Direct measurements of the space density of cosmic dust particles in the vicinity of the earth have been made from rockets, satellites, and space probes. The largest data samples have been obtained from crystal transducer sensors that detect the impact-impulses occurring from the collision of dust particles on sensitive surfaces of space vehicles. Preliminary results from satellite 1959 Eta show: (1) over 1500 impacts and an area-time product greater than 10(exp 1O) sq cm-sec; and (2) a daily variation in the dust particle density near the earth. The dust particle instrumentation of 1959 Eta and sensor calibration techniques are discussed in this paper. The results of direct measurements from space vehicles prior to 1959 Eta are summarized with respect to 1959 Eta information.

Beschreibung: Tektites are probably extraterrestrial, rather than the result of heating some terrestrial materials, because they are a chemically homogeneous group with definite peculiarities (high silica, excess of alkaline earths over alkalis, excess of potash over soda, absence of water), and because some of them (the australites) appear to have undergone ablation in flight through the atmosphere. Since comparatively slow heating is required to explain the liquefaction of the tektite material, it is suggested that the tektites arrived along orbits which were nearly parallel to the surface of the earth, and which resulted from the decay of the orbit of a natural satellite. The great meteor procession of February 9, 1913, is an example of such an object. Comparison with the reentry phenomena of the artificial satellite 1957 Beta suggests that the 1913 shower consisted of a single large stone weighing about 400 kilograms, and a few dozen smaller bodies weighing about 40 grams each, formed by ablation from the larger body. It is shown that under the observed conditions considerable liquid flow would be expected in the stone, which would be heated to about 2100 K. Objects falling from such a shower near the perigee point of the orbit would have a considerable distribution along the orbit as a result of slight variations in height or drag coefficient. The distribution in longitude would be made wider by the turning of the earth under the orbit during the time of fall. The ultimate source of the body which produces a tektite shower is probably the moon, which appears, by virtue of its polarization and the phase distribution of the returned light, to contain high-silica materials. It is suggested that the Igast object alleged to have fallen in 1855 is in fact genuine and represents an unmelted portion of the lunar crust.

Beschreibung: The 'blue haze' is an absorbing smoke, dark as soot in reflection, red in transmission. Its currently accepted explanation by pure scattering (omnidirectional or forward) is untenable, as it would either increase the surface brightness of fall to obscure the surface details. The limb darkening of Mars is mainly the results of absorption by the smoke. The opacity of the Martian atmosphere increases from the red toward the violet. The extinction by the Martian atmosphere is greater than that by the terrestrial at all wavelengths, but only about 20 per cent of the Martian extinction is due to scattering. Dollfus' polarimeteric estimate, corrected for self-absorption, corresponds to a martian atmospheric pressure of 87 mm Hg. The photochemical breakup of carbon dioxide and the escape of oxygen must lead to considerable concentrations of carbon monoxide in the martian atmosphere.

Beschreibung: The NASA lunar exploration program has focused the attention of many scientific and technical groups on such questions as the relative value of lunar experiments, the advantages of manned versus unmanned exploration, and the proper time sequence for the steps to be taken in the exploration program. It is interesting to note that all the approaches to the problem require a definition of the lunar environment at an early stage in the program. The choice of scientific experiments and the design of the required instrumentation is based on our present knowledge of the Moon and on educated guesses as to what data may be obtained. The technical developments required to make possible both a lunar landing and continued operation of scientific equipment on the lunar surface also demand a definition of the lunar environment as a design condition.

Beschreibung: The motion of a satellite of the Moon depends on the potential field due to the Moon as well as the gravitational effects of the Earth and Sun. If one chooses a frame of reference attached to the Moon, it can be shown that the force field resulting from the Sun can be neglected when compared with the perturbing field of the Moon resulting from its oblateness. The effect of the Earth's field on the satellite is of the some order of magnitude as the Moon's perturbing field and must be included in an analysis of the motion of a satellite of the Moon. We will assume that the distance between Earth and Moon remains constant, and we will consider satellite orbits of small eccentricity. It will be shown that a nearly circular polar orbit will digress less than 1 deg from a polar orbit and that the change in eccentricity is less than a factor of e in one year.
