    Notizen: The lecturer described one of the tasks on which the Air Survey Branch of the Ordnance Survey is engaged–that of resurveying at 1/10560 scale parts of the Highlands of Scotland. The stages in which the work is done were described in sequence. The lecture was illustrated by lantern slides and exhibits of which some are reproduced with this article.

    Notizen: A prototype instrument is described which is used to determine the plane rectangular coordinates of the same points of detail on two overlapping aerial photographs. It is designed for use with photography up to a maximum format of 9 inches by 9 inches, carrying a reseau graduated in 1-cm intervals which has been superimposed from the camera register glass at the moment of exposure. Photography not bearing a reseau can also be accommodated by inserting engraved glass reseau plates in the instrument. The coordinates are determined relative to the nearest reseau intersection by micrometers in x and y. Coded scale digitisers are fitted to determine the micrometer readings to the nearest 0–001 mm and the reseau cross identification. Point identification data and coordinates are read out on punched cards or punched tape in suitable form for solution by high-speed computing machines. A visual display of coordinates is provided.

    Notizen: The theory is developed for determining the direction of a point-object by photographing it on the same plate as a star field and using the stars as reference points. A minimum of three reference stars is necessary for determining the camera orientation and with more than three stars a least-squares solution is possible.The method of analysis involves the solution of simultaneous equations for nine “plate constants”. Once the plate constants have been found, the direction of an object may readily be obtained from the coordinates of its image on the plate. The six elements of orientation of the camera may also readily be found from the plate constants. Part of the theory has been programmed for the Pegasus electronic computer. An appendix gives a convenient method of applying atmospheric refraction corrections to direction cosines.

    Notizen: Contour measurements by means of stereoscopic vision, as used in photogrammetry, have now become so highly developed that the limit of accuracy is often set by the binocular acuity of the observer. Very small variations in the personal error of the observer can introduce significant inaccuracies in the measurements. A stereoscope capable of measuring binocular parallax to one second of arc was constructed and used to study the possible causes of these personal variations. Analysis of the results suggests that the monocular clue of “overlay” may be one of the main causes of error, the magnitude of the error varying with the definition of the photograph being studied, and with the state of visual fatigue of the observer.
