    Allometric relationships of ecologically important Antarctic and Arctic zooplankton and fish species (2022)

    Description: Allometric relationships between body properties of animals are useful for a wide variety of purposes, such as estimation of biomass, growth, population structure, bioenergetic modelling and carbon flux studies. This study summarizes allometric relationships of zooplankton and nekton species that play major roles in polar marine food webs. Measurements were performed on 639 individuals of 15 species sampled during three expeditions in the Southern Ocean (winter and summer) and 2374 individuals of 14 species sampled during three expeditions in the Arctic Ocean (spring and summer). The information provided by this study fills current knowledge gaps on relationships between length and wet/dry mass of understudied animals, such as various gelatinous zooplankton, and of animals from understudied seasons and maturity stages, for example, for the krill Thysanoessa macrura and larval Euphausia superba caught in winter. Comparisons show that there is intra-specific variation in length–mass relationships of several species depending on season, e.g. for the amphipod Themisto libellula. To investigate the potential use of generalized regression models, comparisons between sexes, maturity stages or age classes were performed and are discussed, such as for the several krill species and T. libellula. Regression model comparisons on age classes of the fish E. antarctica were inconclusive about their general use. Other allometric measurements performed on carapaces, eyes, heads, telsons, tails and otoliths provided models that proved to be useful for estimating length or mass in, e.g. diet studies. In some cases, the suitability of these models may depend on species or developmental stages.

    Description: The copepod Calanus finmarchicus (Crustacea, Copepoda) is a key zooplanktonic spe-cies with a crucial position in the North Atlantic food web and significant contributor to ocean carbon flux. Like many other high latitude animals, it has evolved a programmed arrested development called diapause to cope with long periods of limited food sup-ply, while growth and reproduction are timed to take advantage of seasonal peaks in primary production. However, anthropogenic warming is inducing changes in the expected timing of phytoplankton blooms, suggesting phenological mismatches with negative consequences for the N. Atlantic ecosystem. While diapause mechanisms are mainly studied in terrestrial arthropods, specifically on laboratory model species, such as the fruit fly Drosophila, the molecular investigations of annual rhythms in wild marine species remain fragmentary. Here we performed a rigorous year-l ong monthly sampling campaign of C. finmarchicus in a Scottish Loch (UK; 56.45°N, 5.18°W) to generate an annual transcriptome. The mRNA of 36 samples (monthly triplicate of 25 individuals) have been deeply sequenced with an average depth of 137 ± 4 million reads (mean ± SE) per sample, aligned to the reference transcriptome, and filtered. We detail the quality assessment of the datasets and provide a high- quality resource for the investigation of wild annual transcriptomic rhythms (35,357 components) in a key diapausing zooplanktonic species.

    Transformation of dissolved organic matter by two 〈scp〉Indo‐Pacific〈/scp〉 sponges (2022)

    Description: Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is the largest organic carbon reservoir in the ocean and an integral component of biogeochemical cycles. The role of free-living microbes in DOM transformation has been studied thoroughly, whereas little attention has been directed towards the influence of benthic organisms. Sponges are efficient filter feeders and common inhabitants of many benthic communities circumglobally. Here, we investigated how two tropical coral reef sponges shape marine DOM. We compared bacterial abundance, inorganic and organic nutrients in off reef, sponge inhalant, and sponge exhalant water of Melophlus sarasinorum and Rhabdastrella globostellata. DOM and bacterial cells were taken up, and dissolved inorganic nitrogen was released by the two Indo-Pacific sponges. Both sponge species utilized a common set of 142 of a total of 3040 compounds detected in DOM on a molecular formula level via ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry. In addition, species-specific uptake was observed, likely due to differences in their associated microbial communities. Overall, the sponges removed presumably semi-labile and semi-refractory compounds from the water column, thereby competing with pelagic bacteria. Within minutes, sponge holobionts altered the molecular composition of surface water DOM (inhalant) into a composition similar to deep-sea DOM (exhalent). The apparent radiocarbon age of DOM increased consistently from off reef and inhalant to exhalant by about 900 14C years for M. sarasinorum. In the pelagic, similar transformations require decades to centuries. Our results stress the dependence of DOM lability definition on the respective environment and illustrate that sponges are hotspots of DOM transformation in the ocean.

    A common temperature dependence of nutritional demands in ectotherms (2022)

    Description: In light of ongoing climate change, it is increasingly important to know how nutritional requirements of ectotherms are affected by changing temperatures. Here, we analyse the wide thermal response of phosphorus (P) requirements via elemental gross growth efficiencies of Carbon (C) and P, and the Threshold Elemental Ratios in different aquatic invertebrate ectotherms: the freshwater model species Daphnia magna, the marine copepod Acartia tonsa, the marine heterotrophic dinoflagellate Oxyrrhis marina, and larvae of two populations of the marine crab Carcinus maenas. We show that they all share a non-linear cubic thermal response of nutrient requirements. Phosphorus requirements decrease from low to intermediate temperatures, increase at higher temperatures and decrease again when temperature is excessive. This common thermal response of nutrient requirements is of great importance if we aim to understand or even predict how ectotherm communities will react to global warming and nutrient-driven eutrophication.

    Description: The current policy and goals aimed to conserve biodiversity and manage biodiversity change are often formulated at the global scale. At smaller scales however, biodiversity change is more nuanced leading to a plethora of trends in different metrics of alpha diversity and temporal turnover. Therefore, large-scale policy targets do not translate easily into local to regional management decisions for biodiversity. Using long-term monitoring data from the Wadden Sea (Southern North Sea), joining structural equation models and general dissimilarity models enabled a better overview of the drivers of biodiversity change. Few commonalities emerged as birds, fish, macroinvertebrates, and phytoplankton differed in their response to certain drivers of change. These differences were additionally dependent upon the biodiversity aspect in question and which environmental data were recorded in each monitoring program. No single biodiversity metric or model sufficed to capture all ongoing change, which requires an explicitly multivariate approaches to biodiversity assessment in local ecosystem management.

    Exploiting the legacy of N.N. Ambraseys: known and unknown earthquakes in the Anatolian area (2022)

    Description: N.N. Ambraseys left us a wealth of papers and volumes on a number of topics; many of them concern the historical earth- quake investigation. One of the last works is the 2009 volume (Ambraseys in Earthquakes in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East: a multidisciplinary study of 2000 years of seismicity, Cambridge, Cambridge, UK, 2009), where he summarizes the results of more than thirty years of investigation through archives and libraries, covering earthquakes of a large area, from Albania to Caucasus. For each earthquake, a short summary of the main effects is supplied, together with the list of the sources used. Such information is intended as material for assessing location and size of the earthquakes, task that the author accomplished only in a very preliminary way for a few earthquakes, only. In addition to exhaustive descriptions of the most known earthquakes and the relevant historical sources, the volume contains information on a large number of earthquakes, so far unknown to the current earthquake catalogues. This paper intends to represent a homage to his immense work, partially showing the potential of his volume. We briefly present here some case histories, including the preliminary location and size of the earthquakes – known and unknown—around Anatolia. We add some examples of how he was able to prove that some alleged earthquakes are actually to be considered as fake or very doubtful. We also present the damage information supplied for some known and unknown earthquakes, and how they can be used for assessing location and size of them.

    Assessing the impact of an updated spatial correlation model of ground motion parameters on the italian shakemap (2022)

    Description: This study develops a new spatial correlation model for Italy using the most up-to-date and densest dataset of accelerometer and velocimeter records available. The objective is to estimate the average correlation length and assess its impact on the prediction accuracy of the Italian Shakemap compared to the global model (Loth and Baker, 2013–LB13) adopted in the default configuration of the program. We compute the spatial covariance structure using a geostatistical approach based on traditional variography applied to standardized residuals within the events of a reference ground motion model (ITA10). We observe spatial clusters of the correlation lengths and a wide variability over the Italian territory linked to the profound heterogeneity of the geological and geomorphological context. The obtained estimates are then implemented within the LB13 co-regionalization model in place of the default values while assuming the same cross-correlation coefficients among spectral parameters. Although our results are quite consistent with previous models calibrated for Italy, we find that the inclusion of the new correlation lengths in the Shakemap predictions, assessed through a leave-one-out cross-validation technique, results in a non-appreciable improvement over the global model, thus indicating that the adopted approach is not able to resolve the regional features and the corresponding spatial correlation with reference to individual scenarios. These findings may suggest the need to move towards nonergodic models in the Shakemap computing to better capture the spatial variability or to determine different co-regionalisation matrices more suitable for the regional applications.

    Health impact of natural gas emission at Cava dei Selci residential zone (metropolitan city of Rome, Italy) (2022)

    Description: Natural gas hazard was assessed at Cava dei Selci, a residential neighbourhood of Marino (Rome) by a joint study of gas emissions and related health problems. Here a densely urbanized zone with 4000 residents surrounds a dangerous natural gas discharge where, along the years, dozens of animals were killed by the gas. Gas originates from Colli Albani volcano and consists mostly of CO2 with ~1 vol.% of H2S. In recent years, several gas-related accidents occurred in the urbanized zone (gas blowouts and road collapses). Some houses were evacuated because of hazardous indoor air gas concentration. Gas hazard was assessed by soil CO2 flux and concentration surveys and indoor and outdoor air CO2 and H2S concentration measurements. Open fields and house gardens release a high quantity of CO2 (32.23 tonnes*day-1). Inside most houses, CO2 air concentration exceeds 0.1 vol.%, the acceptable long-term exposure range. In several houses both CO2 and H2S exceed the IDLH level (Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health). An epidemiological cohort study was carried out on the residents of two Cava dei Selci zones with high (ZoneA) and medium (ZoneB) gas hazard exposure, using the rest of Marino as reference zone. We found excess mortality and Emergency Room Visits (ERV) related to high exposure to CO2 and H2S; in particular , an increased risk of mortality and ERV for diseases of central nervous system (HR 1.57, 95% CI 0.76-3.25 and HR 5.82, 95% CI 1.27-26.56 respectively) was found among men living in Zone A.

    Temporal declines in Wadden Sea phytoplankton cell volumes observed within and across species (2022)

    Description: Cell size is a master trait in the functional ecology of phytoplankton correlating with numerous morphological, physiological, and life-cycle characteristics of species that constrain their nutrient use, growth, and edibility. In contrast to well-known spatial patterns in cell size at macroecological scales or temporal changes in experimental contexts, few data sets allow testing temporal changes in cell sizes within ecosystems. To analyze the temporal changes of intraspecific and community-wide cell size, we use the phytoplankton data derived from the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea monitoring program, which comprises sample- and species-specific measurements of cell volume from 1710 samples collected over 14 yr. We find significant reductions in both the cell volume of most species and the weighted mean cell size of communities. Mainly diatoms showed this decline, whereas the size of dinoflagellates seemed to be less responsive. The magnitude of the trend indicates that cell volumes are about 30% smaller now than a decade ago. This interannual trend is overlayed by seasonal cycles with smaller cells typically observed in summer. In the subset of samples including environmental conditions, small community cell size was strongly related to high temperatures and low total phosphorus concentration. We conclude that cell size captures ongoing changes in phytoplankton communities beyond the changes in species composition. In addition, based on the changes in species biovolumes revealed by our analysis, we warn that using standard cell size values in phytoplankton assessment will not only miss temporal changes in size, but also lead to systematic errors in biomass estimates over time.

    Drivers of global pre‐industrial patterns of species turnover in planktonic foraminifera (2022)

    Description: 〈jats:p〉Anthropogenic climate change is altering global biogeographical patterns. However, it remains difficult to quantify how bioregions are changing because pre‐industrial records of species distributions are rare. Marine microfossils, such as planktonic foraminifera, are preserved in seafloor sediments and allow the quantification of bioregions in the past. Using a recently compiled data set of pre‐industrial species composition of planktonic foraminifera in 3802 worldwide seafloor sediments, we employed multivariate and statistical model‐based approaches to study spatial turnover in order to 1) quantify planktonic foraminifera bioregions and 2) understand the environmental drivers of species turnover. Four latitudinally banded bioregions emerge from the global assemblage data. The polar and temperate bioregions are bi‐hemispheric, supporting the idea that planktonic foraminifera species are not limited by dispersal. The equatorial bioregion shows complex longitudinal patterns and overlaps in sea surface temperature (SST) range with the tropical bioregion. Compositional‐turnover models (Bayesian bootstrap generalised dissimilarity models) identify SST as the strongest driver of species turnover. The turnover rate is constant across most of the SST gradient, showing no SST threshold values with rapid shifts in species composition, but decelerates above 25°C, suggesting SST is less predictive of species composition in warmer waters. Other environmental predictors affect species turnover non‐linearly, and their importance differs across regions. In the Pacific ocean, net primary productivity below 500 mgC m〈jats:sup〉−2〈/jats:sup〉 day〈jats:sup〉−1〈/jats:sup〉 drives fast compositional change. Water depth values below 3000 m (which affect calcareous microfossil preservation) increasingly drive changes in species composition among death assemblages in the Pacific and Indian oceans. Together, our results suggest that the dynamics of planktonic foraminifera bioregions are expected to be highly responsive to climate change; however, at lower latitudes, environmental drivers other than SST may affect these dynamics.〈/jats:p〉

    Failures to disagree are essential for environmental science to effectively influence policy development (2022)

    Description: While environmental science, and ecology in particular, is working to provide better understanding to base sustainable decisions on, the way scientific understanding is developed can at times be detrimental to this cause. Locked-in debates are often unnecessarily polarised and can compromise any common goals of the opposing camps. The present paper is inspired by a resolved debate from an unrelated field of psychology where Nobel laureate David Kahneman and Garry Klein turned what seemed to be a locked-in debate into a constructive process for their fields. The present paper is also motivated by previous discourses regarding the role of thresholds in natural systems for management and governance, but its scope of analysis targets the scientific process within complex social-ecological systems in general. We identified four features of environmental science that appear to predispose for locked-in debates: (1) The strongly context-dependent behaviour of ecological systems. (2) The dominant role of single hypothesis testing. (3) The high prominence given to theory demonstration compared investigation. (4) The effect of urgent demands to inform and steer policy. This fertile ground is further cultivated by human psychological aspects as well as the structure of funding and publication systems.

    Low statistical power and overestimated anthropogenic impacts, exacerbated by publication bias, dominate field studies in global change biology (2022)

    Description: Field studies are essential to reliably quantify ecological responses to global change because they are exposed to realistic climate manipulations. Yet such studies are limited in replicates, resulting in less power and, therefore, potentially unreliable effect estimates. Furthermore, while manipulative field experiments are assumed to be more powerful than non-manipulative observations, it has rarely been scrutinized using extensive data. Here, using 3847 field experiments that were designed to estimate the effect of environmental stressors on ecosystems, we systematically quantified their statistical power and magnitude (Type M) and sign (Type S) errors. Our investigations focused upon the reliability of field experiments to assess the effect of stressors on both ecosystem's response magnitude and variability. When controlling for publication bias, single experiments were underpowered to detect response magnitude (median power: 18%–38% depending on effect sizes). Single experiments also had much lower power to detect response variability (6%–12% depending on effect sizes) than response magnitude. Such underpowered studies could exaggerate estimates of response magnitude by 2–3 times (Type M errors) and variability by 4–10 times. Type S errors were comparatively rare. These observations indicate that low power, coupled with publication bias, inflates the estimates of anthropogenic impacts. Importantly, we found that meta-analyses largely mitigated the issues of low power and exaggerated effect size estimates. Rather surprisingly, manipulative experiments and non-manipulative observations had very similar results in terms of their power, Type M and S errors. Therefore, the previous assumption about the superiority of manipulative experiments in terms of power is overstated. These results call for highly powered field studies to reliably inform theory building and policymaking, via more collaboration and team science, and large-scale ecosystem facilities. Future studies also require transparent reporting and open science practices to approach reproducible and reliable empirical work and evidence synthesis.

    Cell size as driver and sentinel of phytoplankton community structure and functioning (2022)

    Description: Body size is a decisive functional trait in many organisms, especially for phytoplankton, which span several orders of magnitude in cell volume. Therefore, the analysis of size as a functional trait driving species’ performance has received wide attention in aquatic ecology, amended in recent decades by studies documenting changes in phytoplankton size in response to abiotic or biotic factors in the environment. We performed a systematic literature review to provide an overarching, partially quantitative synthesis of cell size as a driver and sentinel of phytoplankton ecology. We found consistent and significant allometric relationships between cell sizes and the functional performance of phytoplankton species (cellular rates of carbon fixation, respiration and exudation as well as resource affinities, uptake and content). Size scaling became weaker, absent or even negative when addressing C- or volume-specific rates or growth. C-specific photosynthesis and population growth rate peaked at intermediate cell sizes around 100 µm3. Additionally, we found a rich literature on sizes changing in response to warming, nutrients and pollutants. Whereas small cells tended to dominate under oligotrophic and warm conditions, there are a few notable exceptions, which indicates that other environmental or biotic constraints alter this general trend. Grazing seems a likely explanation, which we reviewed to understand both how size affects edibility and how size structure changes in response to grazing. Cell size also predisposes the strength and outcome of competitive interactions between algal species. Finally, we address size in a community context, where size-abundance scaling describes community composition and thereby the biodiversity in phytoplankton assemblages. We conclude that (a) size is a highly predictive trait for phytoplankton metabolism at the cellular scale, with less strong and nonlinear implications for growth and specific metabolism and (b) size structure is a highly suitable sentinel of phytoplankton responses to changing environments. However, very few commercially available sensors for such platforms are capable of monitoring large particulate matter (100–2000 μm) and plankton despite their important roles in the biological carbon pump and as trophic links from phytoplankton to fish. Here, we provide details of a new, commercially available scientific camera-based particle counter, specifically designed to be deployed on autonomous and cabled platforms: the Underwater Vision Profiler 6 (UVP6). Indeed, the UVP6 camera-and-lighting and processing system, while small in size and requiring low power, provides data of quality comparable to that of previous much larger UVPs deployed from ships. We detail the UVP6 camera settings, its performance when acquiring data on aquatic particles and plankton, their quality control, analysis of its recordings, and streaming from in situ acquisition to users. In addition, we explain how the UVP6 has already been integrated into platforms such as BGC-Argo floats, gliders and long-term mooring systems (autonomous platforms). Finally, we use results from actual deployments to illustrate how UVP6 data can contribute to addressing longstanding questions in marine science, and also suggest new avenues that can be explored using UVP6-equipped autonomous platforms.

    Description: The Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba Dana) is a keystone species in the Southern Ocean that uses an arsenal of hydrolases for biomacromolecule decomposition to effectively digest its omnivorous diet. The present study builds on a hybrid-assembled transcriptome (13,671 ORFs) combined with comprehensive proteome profiling. The analysis of individual krill compartments allowed detection of significantly more different proteins compared to that of the entire animal (1464 vs. 294 proteins). The nearby krill sampling stations in the Bransfield Strait (Antarctic Peninsula) yielded rather uniform proteome datasets. Proteins related to energy production and lipid degradation were particularly abundant in the abdomen, agreeing with the high energy demand of muscle tissue. A total of 378 different biomacromolecule hydrolysing enzymes were detected, including 250 proteases, 99 CAZymes, 14 nucleases and 15 lipases. The large repertoire in proteases is in accord with the protein-rich diet affiliatedwith E. superba’s omnivorous lifestyle and complex biology. The richness in chitin-degrading enzymes allows not only digestion of zooplankton diet, but also the utilisation of the discharged exoskeleton after moulting.

    Description: Phytoplanktonic organisms are particularly sensitive to environmental change, and, as they represent a direct link between abiotic and biotic compartments within the marine food web, changes in the functional structure of phytoplankton communities can result in profound impacts on ecosystem functioning. Using a trait-based approach, we examined changes in the functional structure of the southern North Sea phytoplankton over the past five decades in relation to environmental conditions. We identified a shift in functional structure between 1998 and 2004 which coincides with a pronounced increase in diatom and decrease in dinoflagellate abundances, and we provide a mechanistic explanation for this taxonomic change. Early in the 2000s, the phytoplankton functional structure shifted from slow growing, autumn blooming, mixotrophic organisms, towards earlier blooming and faster-growing microalgae. Warming and decreasing dissolved phosphorus concentrations were linked to this rapid reorganization of the functional structure. We identified a potential link between this shift and dissolved nutrient concentrations, and we hypothesise that organisms blooming early and displaying high growth rates efficiently take up nutrients which then are no longer available to late bloomers. Moreover, we identified that the above-mentioned functional change may have bottom-up consequences, through a food quality-driven negative influence on copepod abundances. Overall, our study highlights that, by altering the phytoplankton functional composition, global and regional changes may have profound long-term impacts on coastal ecosystems, impacting both food-web structure and biogeochemical cycles.

Under ambient conditions methyl-B12 and adenosyl-B12 were nearly fully hydrolyzed to hydroxy-B12 in less than 1 h. Hydroxy-B12 and a novel, corresponding isomer were the main forms of B12 found at all field sites. This isomer eluted well after the OH-B12 peak and was also detected in commercially available OH-B12. Both compounds showed very high similarity in their collision-induced dissociation spectra. Conclusions The high instability of the biologically active forms of Me-B12 and Ado-B12 towards hydrolysis was shown, highlighting the importance of reducing the duration of the extraction protocol. In addition, the vitamin B12 pool in the study area was mostly comprised of a previously undescribed isomer of OH-B12. Further studies into the structure of this isomer and its bioavailability are needed.

    Description: Responding to societal challenges requires an understanding of how institutional change happens or does not happen. In the context of flood risk reduction, a central impediment of transformational change is a struggle over how public participation is understood and practiced. Risk institutions are often portrayed as resistant to change, which overlooks the individuals within institutions who struggle to implement innovative power-sharing approaches/arrangements. Using two rounds of qualitative interviews spread over 5 years, this research identifies factions within the risk sector—those who view participation as awareness raising and those who are struggling to make participation part of a wider commitment to power-sharing: a group that, for the purpose of this analysis, we call “mavericks.” Through focus on how mavericks struggle for change, this analysis uncovers tensions that arise as individuals attempt to alter prevailing knowledge-practices. The findings highlight the importance of experiential learning, active listening, and the alteration of space. By applying a relational conceptualisation, we explore how mavericks advocate for relationship building, which alters spaces of public participation and, in that way, lays the foundation for transformational social innovations. The conclusions offer flood risk researchers perspective on the institutional struggles that preconfigure how frontrunner projects are or are not able to facilitate the community participation needed to successfully implement societal transformations.

    Description: Primary consumers in aquatic ecosystems are frequently limited by the quality of their food, often expressed as phytoplankton elemental and biochemical composition. However, the effects of these food quality indicators vary across studies, and we lack an integrated understanding of how elemental (e.g. nitrogen, phosphorus) and biochemical (e.g. fatty acid, sterol) limitations interactively influence aquatic food webs. Here, we present the results of a meta-analysis using 〉100 experimental studies, confirming that limitation by N, P, fatty acids, and sterols all have significant negative effects on zooplankton performance. However, effects varied by grazer response (growth vs. reproduction), specific manipulation, and across taxa. While P limitation had greater effects on zooplankton growth than fatty acids overall, P and fatty acid limitation had equal effects on reproduction. Furthermore, we show that: nutrient co-limitation in zooplankton is strong; effects of essential fatty acid limitation depend on P availability; indirect effects induced by P limitation exceed direct effects of mineral P limitation; and effects of nutrient amendments using laboratory phytoplankton isolates exceed those using natural field communities. Our meta-analysis reconciles contrasting views about the role of various food quality indicators, and their interactions, for zooplankton performance, and provides a mechanistic understanding of trophic transfer in aquatic environments.

    Description: Ecological stability refers to a range of concepts used to quantify how species and environments change over time and in response to disturbances. Most empirically tractable ecological stability metrics assume that systems have simple dynamics and static equilibria. However, ecological systems are typically complex and often lack static equilibria (e.g., predator–prey oscillations, transient dynamics, chaos). Failing to account for these factors can lead to biased estimates of stability, in particular, by conflating effects of observation error, process noise, and underlying deterministic dynamics. To distinguish among these processes, we combine three existing approaches: state space models; delay embedding methods; and particle filtering. Jointly, these provide something akin to a deterministically “detrended” version of the coefficient of variation, separately tracking variability due to deterministic dynamics versus stochastic perturbations. Moreover, these variability estimates can be used to forecast dynamics, classify underlying sources of stochastic dynamics, and estimate the “exit time” before a state change takes place (e.g., local extinction events). Importantly, the time-delay embedding methods that we employ make very few assumptions about the functions governing deterministic dynamics, which facilitates applications in systems with limited data and a priori biological knowledge. To demonstrate how complex dynamics without static equilibria can bias ecological stability estimates, we analyze simulated time series of abundance dynamics in a system with time-varying carrying capacity and empirically observed abundance dynamics of the green algae Chlamydomonas terricola grown in a diverse microcosm mixture under variable temperature conditions. We show that stability estimates based on raw observations greatly overestimate temporal variability and fail to accurately forecast time to extinction. In contrast, joint application of state space modeling, delay embedding, and particle filters were able to: (1) correctly quantify the contributions of deterministic versus stochastic variability; (2) successfully estimate “true” abundance dynamics; and (3) correctly forecast time to extinction. Our results therefore demonstrate the importance of accounting for effects of complex, nonstatic dynamics in studies of ecological stability and provide an empirically tractable and flexible toolkit for conducting these measurements.

    Description: Habitat forming ecosystem engineers play critical roles in structuring coastal seascapes. Many ecosystem engineers, such as seagrasses and epifaunal bivalves, are known to have positive effects on sediment stability and increase coastal protection and ecosystem resilience. Others, such as bioturbating infaunal bivalves, may instead destabilize sediment. However, despite the common co-occurrence of seagrasses and bivalves in coastal seascapes, little is known of their combined effects on sediment dynamics. Here, we used wave flumes to compare sediment dynamics in monospecific and multispecific treatments of eelgrass, Zostera marina, and associated bivalves (infaunal Limecola balthica, infaunal Cerastoderma edule, epifaunal Magellana gigas) under a range of wave exposures. Eelgrass reduced bedload erosion rates by 25–50%, with digital elevation models indicating that eelgrass affected the sediment micro-bathymetry by decreasing surface roughness and ripple sizes. Effects of bivalves on sediment mobilization were species-specific; L. balthica reduced erosion by 25%, C. edule increased erosion by 40%, while M. gigas had little effect. Importantly, eelgrass modified the impacts of bivalves: the destabilizing effects of C. edule vanished in the presence of eelgrass, while we found positive additive effects of eelgrass and L. balthica on sediment stabilization and potential for mutual anchoring. Such interspecific interactions are likely relevant for habitat patch emergence and resilience to extreme wave conditions. In light of future climate scenarios where increasing storm frequency and wave exposure threaten coastal ecosystems, our results add a mechanistic understanding of sediment dynamics and interactions between ecosystem engineers, with relevance for management and conservation.

Here, we quantified variation in larval survival and physiological rates of Carcinus maenas among populations occurring in distant or contrasting habitats (Cádiz: Spain, Helgoland: North Sea, Kerteminde: Baltic Sea). During the reproductive season, we reared larvae of these populations, in the laboratory, under a combination of several temperatures (15–24 °C) and salinities (25 and 32.5 PSU). In survival, all three populations showed a mitigating effect of high temperatures at lower salinity, with the strongest pattern for Helgoland. However, Cádiz and Kerteminde differed from Helgoland in that a strong thermal mitigation did not occur for growth and developmental rates. For all populations, oxygen consumption rates were driven only by temperature; hence, these could not explain the growth rate depression found at lower salinity. Larvae from Cádiz, reared in seawater, showed increased survival at the highest temperature, which differs from Helgoland (no clear survival pattern), and especially Kerteminde (decreased survival at high temperature). These responses from the Cádiz population correspond with the larval and parental habitat (i.e., high salinity and temperature) and may reflect local adaptation. Overall, along the European coast, C. maenas larvae showed a diversity of responses, which may enable specific populations to tolerate warming and subsidise more vulnerable populations. In such case, C. maenas would be able to cope with climate change through a spatial portfolio effect.

    Thermohydrological Impact of Forest Disturbances on Ecosystem‐Protected Permafrost (2022)

    Description: Boreal forests cover over half of the global permafrost area and protect underlying permafrost. Boreal forest development, therefore, has an impact on permafrost evolution, especially under a warming climate. Forest disturbances and changing climate conditions cause vegetation shifts and potentially destabilize the carbon stored within the vegetation and permafrost. Disturbed permafrost-forest ecosystems can develop into a dry or swampy bush- or grasslands, shift toward broadleaf- or evergreen needleleaf-dominated forests, or recover to the pre-disturbance state. An increase in the number and intensity of fires, as well as intensified logging activities, could lead to a partial or complete ecosystem and permafrost degradation. We study the impact of forest disturbances (logging, surface, and canopy fires) on the thermal and hydrological permafrost conditions and ecosystem resilience. We use a dynamic multilayer canopy-permafrost model to simulate different scenarios at a study site in eastern Siberia. We implement expected mortality, defoliation, and ground surface changes and analyze the interplay between forest recovery and permafrost. We find that forest loss induces soil drying of up to 44%, leading to lower active layer thicknesses and abrupt or steady decline of a larch forest, depending on disturbance intensity. Only after surface fires, the most common disturbances, inducing low mortality rates, forests can recover and overpass pre-disturbance leaf area index values. We find that the trajectory of larch forests after surface fires is dependent on the precipitation conditions in the years after the disturbance. Dryer years can drastically change the direction of the larch forest development within the studied period.

    Description: Previous field studies in the Southern Ocean (SO) indicated an increased occurrence and dominance of cryptophytes over diatoms due to climate change. To gain a better mechanistic understanding of how the two ecologically important SO phytoplankton groups cope with ocean acidification (OA) and iron (Fe) availability, we chose two common representatives of Antarctic waters, the cryptophyte Geminigera cryophila and the diatom Pseudo-nitzschia subcurvata. Both species were grown at 2°C under different pCO2 (400 vs. 900 μatm) and Fe (0.6 vs. 1.2 nM) conditions. For P. subcurvata, an additional high pCO2 level was applied (1400 μatm). At ambient pCO2 under low Fe supply, growth of G. cryophila almost stopped while it remained unaffected in P. subcurvata. Under high Fe conditions, OA was not beneficial for P. subcurvata, but stimulated growth and carbon production of G. cryophila. Under low Fe supply, P. subcurvata coped much better with OA than the cryptophyte, but invested more energy into photoacclimation. Our study reveals that Fe limitation was detrimental for the growth of G. cryophila and suppressed the positive OA effect. The diatom was efficient in coping with low Fe, but was stressed by OA while both factors together strongly impacted its growth. The distinct physiological response of both species to OA and Fe limitation explains their occurrence in the field. Based on our results, Fe availability is an important modulator of OA effects on SO phytoplankton, with different implications on the occurrence of cryptophytes and diatoms in the future.

    Description: The fluorophore [2-(4-pyridyl)-5{[4-dimethylaminoethyl-aminocarbamoyl-methoxy]phenyl}oxazole], in short PDMPO, is incorporated in newly polymerized silica in diatom frustules and thereby provides a tool to estimate Si uptake, study diatom cell cycles but also determine mortality-independent abundance-based species specific-growth rates in cultures and natural assemblages. In this study, the theoretical framework and applicability of the PDMPO staining technique to estimate diatom species specific-growth rates were investigated. Three common polar diatom species, Pseudo-nitzschia subcurvata, Chaetoceros simplex, and Thalassiosira sp., chosen in order to cover a broad range of species specific frustule and life-cycle characteristics, were incubated over 24 h in control (no PDMPO) and with 0.125 and 0.6 μM PDMPO addition, respectively. Results indicate that specific-growth rates of the species tested were not affected in both treatments with PDMPO addition. The specific-growth rate estimates based on the PDMPO staining patterns (μPDMPO) were comparable and more robust than growth rates estimated from the changes in cell concentrations (μcc). This technique also allowed to investigate and highlight the importance of the illumination cycle (light and dark phases) on cell division in diatoms.

    Description: The term ‘destructive fishing’ appears in multiple international policy instruments intended to improve outcomes for marine biodiversity, coastal communities and sustainable fisheries. However, the meaning of ‘destructive fishing’ is often vague, limiting effectiveness in policy. Therefore, in this study, we systematically reviewed the use of ‘destructive fishing’ in three record types: academic literature, media articles and policy documents between 1976 and 2020. A more detailed analysis was performed on subsets of these records, considering the extent to which the term is characterised, geographic distribution of use, and specific impacts and practices associated with the term. We found that use of ‘destructive fishing’ relative to the generic term ‘fisheries’ has increased since the 1990s. Records focussed predominantly on fishing practices in South-eastern Asia, followed by Southern Asia and Europe. The term was characterised in detail in only 15% of records. Habitat damage and blast/poison fishing were the most associated ecological impacts and gear/practices, respectively. Bottom trawling and unspecified net fishing were regularly linked to destructive fishing. Importantly, the three record types use the term differently. Academic literature tends to specifically articulate the negative impacts, while media articles focus generally on associated gears/practices. Significant regional variation also exists in how the term is used and what phenomena it is applied to. This study provides evidence and recommendations to inform stakeholders in any future pursuit of a unified definition of ‘destructive fishing’ to support more meaningful implementation of global sustainability goals.

    Description: Tundra is experiencing more intense warming than any other ecosystem on earth. While warming is the most direct effect of climate change on tundra, warming leads to a cascade of environmental changes such as permafrost thaw, altered precipitation regimes, and increased wildfires. This chapter will first focus on how climate change is changing the environment of Arctic and subarctic tundra and then focus on how climate change is altering tundra's carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycles with a focus on soils. Overall, tundra soils are shifting from being a carbon sink into a carbon source as rising temperatures increase microbial activity—a positive feedback to climate change. However, those rising temperatures are also increasing nutrient mineralization rates, which could increase ecosystem carbon storage via enhanced plant productivity as well as increase emissions of nitrous oxide, a powerful greenhouse gas. There is currently a disconnect between the large soil carbon losses measured in many in situ experiments and the strong plant carbon gains predicted by models. Ultimately, more research is needed on the interplay between tundra soils, nutrients, and plants to determine the magnitude of tundra's feedback to climate change.

    Delayed Antarctic sea-ice decline in high-resolution climate change simulations (2022)

    Description: Despite global warming and Arctic sea-ice loss, on average the Antarctic sea-ice extent has not declined since 1979 when satellite data became available. In contrast, climate model simulations tend to exhibit strong negative sea-ice trends for the same period. This Antarctic sea-ice paradox leads to low confidence in 21st-century sea-ice projections. Here we present multi-resolution climate change projections that account for Southern Ocean mesoscale eddies. The high-resolution configuration simulates stable September Antarctic sea-ice extent that is not projected to decline until the mid-21st century. We argue that one reason for this finding is a more realistic ocean circulation that increases the equatorward heat transport response to global warming. As a result, the ocean becomes more efficient at moderating the anthropogenic warming around Antarctica and hence at delaying sea-ice decline. Our study suggests that explicitly simulating Southern Ocean eddies is necessary for providing Antarctic sea-ice projections with higher confidence.

    Description: Monitoring community composition of Foraminifera (single-celled marine protists) pro-vides valuable insights into environmental conditions in marine ecosystems. Despitethe efficiency of environmental DNA (eDNA) and bulk-sample DNA (bulk-DNA) me-tabarcoding to assess the presence of multiple taxa, this has not been straightforwardfor Foraminifera partially due to the high genetic variability in widely used ribosomalmarkers. Here, we test the correctness in retrieving foraminiferal communities by me-tabarcoding of mock communities, bulk-DNA from coral reef sediment samples, andeDNA from their associated ethanol preservative using the recently sequenced cy-tochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) marker. To assess the detection success, we com-pared our results with large benthic foraminiferal communities previously reportedfrom the same sampling sites. Results from our mock communities demonstrate thatall species were detected in two mock communities and all but one in the remainingfour. Technical replicates were highly similar in number of reads for each assigned ASVin both the mock communities and bulk-DNA samples. Bulk-DNA showed a signifi-cantly higher species richness than their associated eDNA samples, and also detectedadditional species to what was already reported at the specific sites. Our study con-firms that metabarcoding using the foraminiferal COI marker adequately retrieves thediversity and community composition of both the mock communities and the bulk-DNA samples. With its decreased variability compared with the commonly used nu-clear 18 S rRNA, the COI marker renders bulk-DNA metabarcoding a powerful tool toassess foraminiferal community composition under the condition that the referencedatabase is adequate to the target taxa.

    Description: Because continuous and high-resolution records are scarce in the polar Urals, a multiproxy study was carried out on a 54 m long sediment succession (Co1321) from Lake Bolshoye Shchuchye. The sedimentological, geochemical, pollen and chironomid data suggest that glaciers occupied the lake's catchment during the cold and dry MIS 2 and document a change in ice extent around 23.5–18 cal ka bp. Subsequently, meltwater input, sediment supply and erosional activity decreased as local glaciers progressively melted. The vegetation around the lake comprised open, herb and grass-dominated tundra-steppe until the Bølling-Allerød, but shows a distinct change to probably moister conditions around 17–16 cal ka bp. Local glaciers completely disappeared during the Bølling-Allerød, when summer air temperatures were similar to today and low shrub tundra became established. The Younger Dryas is confined by distinct shifts in the pollen and chironomid records pointing to drier conditions. The Holocene is characterised by a denser vegetation cover, stabilised soil conditions and decreased minerogenic input, especially during the local thermal maximum between c. 10 and 5 cal ka bp. Subsequently, present-day vegetation developed and summer air temperatures decreased to modern, except for two intervals, which may represent the Little Ice Age and Medieval Warm Period.

    Description: Pronounced glacial and interglacial climate cycles characterized northern ecosystems during the Pleistocene. Our understanding of the resultant community transformations and past ecological interactions strongly depends on the taxa found in fossil assemblages. Here, we present a shotgun metagenomic analysis of sedimentary ancient DNA (sedaDNA) to infer past ecosystem-wide biotic composition (from viruses to megaherbivores) from the Middle and Late Pleistocene at the Batagay megaslump, East Siberia. The shotgun DNA records of past vegetation composition largely agree with pollen and plant metabarcoding data from the same samples. Interglacial ecosystems at Batagay attributed to Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 17 and MIS 7 were characterized by forested vegetation (Pinus, Betula, Alnus) and open grassland. The microbial and fungal communities indicate strong activity related to soil decomposition, especially during MIS17. The local landscape likely featured more open, herb-dominated areas, and the vegetation mosaic supported birds and small omnivorous mammals. Parts of the area were intermittently/partially flooded as suggested by the presence of water-dependent taxa. During MIS 3, the sampled ecosystems are identified as cold-temperate, periodically flooded grassland. Diverse megafauna (Mammuthus, Equus, Coelodonta) coexisted with small mammals (rodents). The MIS 2 ecosystems existed under harsher conditions, as suggested by the presence of cold-adapted herbaceous taxa. Typical Pleistocene megafauna still inhabited the area. The new approach, in which shotgun sequencing is supported by metabarcoding and pollen data, enables the investigation of community composition changes across a broad range of taxonomic groups and inferences about trophic interactions and aspects of soil microbial ecology.

    Description: Écrire la crise ce n'est pas la raconter. C'est montrer comment elle modifie nos manières de raconter. Encore faut-il s'entendre sur le mot lui-même car peut-on appeler crise (du grec « krisis » : changement brutal) cette lente dissolution des valeurs de la modernité qui nous fait entrer dans un « après » informulable, sinon par le terme souvent controversé de postmodernité ? Au-delà des polémiques que suscite cette notion, il s'agit ici de considérer le postmoderne non pas comme une régression anti-moderne mais comme la prise de conscience d'un certain nombre de dévoiements du projet moderne qui nous projettent dans une ère de turbulence dont les arts, et en particulier la littérature, portent la marque. Ainsi considéré, le postmodernisme n'est ni une école, ni une avant-garde. Il témoigne avant tout d'une crise de culture à la transition des deux siècles, qui s'est transformée en culture de la crise, de sorte que, non seulement la pensée, la science et les arts, s'en trouvent affectés, mais de manière plus profonde encore, la société et l'individu. C'est pourquoi cet essai se propose à la fois, d'examiner l'hypothèse postmoderne comme mise en turbulence des valeurs de la modernité, et de définir le postmodernisme en littérature comme une esthétique qui met en relation les configurations sociales et certaines formes d'écriture contemporaine.

    Description: This open access textbook aims at providing detailed explanations on how to design and construct image analysis workflows to successfully conduct bioimage analysis. Addressing the main challenges in image data analysis, where acquisition by powerful imaging devices results in very large amounts of collected image data, the book discusses techniques relying on batch and GPU programming, as well as on powerful deep learning-based algorithms. In addition, downstream data processing techniques are introduced, such as Python libraries for data organization, plotting, and visualizations. Finally, by studying the way individual unique ideas are implemented in the workflows, readers are carefully guided through how the parameters driving biological systems are revealed by analyzing image data. These studies include segmentation of plant tissue epidermis, analysis of the spatial pattern of the eye development in fruit flies, and the analysis of collective cell migration dynamics. The presented content extends the Bioimage Data Analysis Workflows textbook (Miura, Sladoje, 2020), published in this same series, with new contributions and advanced material, while preserving the well-appreciated pedagogical approach adopted and promoted during the training schools for bioimage analysis organized within NEUBIAS – the Network of European Bioimage Analysts. This textbook is intended for advanced students in various fields of the life sciences and biomedicine, as well as staff scientists and faculty members who conduct regular quantitative analyses of microscopy images.

Croisant les notions de citoyenneté, de responsabilité et de droits civiques, ainsi que les questionnements autour de la politisation de la science, cet ouvrage retrace l’histoire de la médicalisation du corps noir par la profession psychiatrique aux États-Unis, du xxe siècle jusqu’à l’époque contemporaine. Conjuguant l’histoire et la sociologie, il est ainsi question de retracer les différents régimes par lesquels la notion de race a été jugée pertinente par les psychiatres pour naturaliser les différences corporelles des années 1920 jusqu’à l’époque contemporaine. En s’appuyant sur un corpus d’archives personnelles de médecins, d’institutions de soins et de centres de recherche en psychiatrie, ainsi que sur une enquête qualitative réalisée auprès de psychiatres en Californie, ce livre démontre que la catégorie de race irrigue encore et toujours les pratiques et les discours institutionnels, aussi bien dans les représentations que les médecins véhiculent des corps soignés, que dans les stratégies de naturalisation du social employées pour prendre en charge leurs patients.

The authors’ reformulation of the identification problem in the light of regularization theory not only offers new insight on classical questions, but paves the way to new and powerful algorithms for a variety of linear and nonlinear problems.     Description: Ce livre s’efforce de réparer une injustice : proposer une réflexion d’ensemble sur l’œuvre du philosophe français Mikel Dufrenne (1910-1995) qui semble un peu délaissée voire méconnue aujourd’hui. Si sa démarche phénoménologique héritée de Husserl le conduit immanquablement à s’interroger sur la place singulière que l’objet esthétique occupe dans notre monde, son projet est plus ambitieux. L’attention que Mikel Dufrenne porte aux différents arts (les arts plastiques, la musique, la poésie) ainsi qu’à la richesse des expériences esthétiques vécues, décrites et commentées, lui permet en effet de viser un but supérieur : non seulement redéfinir et réorganiser la phénoménologie autour de la question de l’art, mais faire de l’œuvre ce qui permet de remonter vers un principe originaire, la Nature, qui fonde toute création. Cette tâche singulière et méconnue méritait bien un effort philosophique collectif dont le présent ouvrage est le fruit.

    Description: Excellant à représenter les passions nobles, Rembrandt est qualifié d’artiste du sublime par ses contemporains. Or, depuis que la Renaissance a redécouvert le traité de Longin, le sublime – ou l’art qui dépasse l’art – est l’objet de débats dans les cercles artistiques et religieux. Embrassant l’ensemble de l’œuvre gravé de l’artiste, ce livre fait dialoguer philosophie et histoire de l’art. Il soutient l’idée selon laquelle, même s’il n’est pas théoricien, Rembrandt contribue à renouveler la tradition d’interprétation du sublime. Le principe méthodologique consiste à dégager la pensée de l’artiste. Confronter la pratique du graveur à son iconographie religieuse, inédite dans un pays calviniste, aide à analyser la cohérence de cette pensée. Rembrandt renonce au modèle préalable du dessin pour s’immerger dans le sensible. Or son Christ est proche du Christ de la kénose tel qu’il est présenté par Paul dans ses épîtres : il s’incarne en se vidant de sa puissance. La contradiction entre l’humble et le sublime est au cœur de la pensée de Rembrandt, et on peut y voir un enjeu politique : figures de l’invisible social, ses mendiants évoquent la grandeur de l’homme.

    Description: This open access book includes a series of relevant policy research articles, elaborared in the framework of the “Quality in higher education: internationalisation and databases to enhance the Romanian education system” project, implemented by the Executive Agency for Higher Education, Research, Development and Innovation Funding (UEFISCDI), together with the Ministry of Education. The project aims to develop and implement systemic measures at tertiary education level, leading to an increased quality of the overall higher education system and universities better prepared for labour market requirements and international standards. The book focuses on areas of interest for Romanian higher education, such as systemic measures to improve access, participation and completion for (vulnerable) students, better promotion of the Romanian higher education to attract students, as well as instruments for a more efficient use of data at higher education level. Each article includes evidence-based policy proposals that could support new strategic initiatives in higher education, including new legislation. Additionally, the collection of articles tells a comprehensive story about the audacity of a higher education system which went through significant challenges to align itself with both European and international trends, as well as respond to national imperatives. Over the last three decades, since the fall of the Iron Curtain, Romanian higher education has undergone significant transformations, aiming to align itself to the latest developments and trends at European and international level. The National Law on Education no. 1/2011 has set the stage for a full implementation of the Bologna Process action lines, taking into account that Romania was already a part of the largest European intergovernmental process – currently the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) – as a founding member. However, since the adoption of this normative framework, the law suffered numerous amendments, making it challenging to observe and achieve coherence in its implementation. Furthermore, Romania is also currently redesigning the strategy for the alocation of European structural funds 2021-2027, based on two strategic documents - the new Education and Employment Operational Programme and the National Recovery and Resilience Plan which highlight the reform and investment priorities at a national level. At the same time, 2021 is a good time to analyze the level of implementation for the objectives and measures included in the National Strategy for Tertiary Education 2015-2020, the Europe 2020 Strategy, and the Bologna Process action lines in the 2010 – 2020 timeframe. Therefore, the present moment may be an important time to assess the impact of strategic documents and actions in the last decade and, possibly, to draft a new National Education Law, better adapted to current realities, starting from the recent initiative by the President of Romania – the Educated Romania strategic vision which was also politically assumed by the Romanian Government.

    Description: Depuis plus d’un siècle la notion de « nuisible » fait l’objet d’une contestation de plus en plus vive. Pourtant elle connaît une singulière persistance sociale en tant que concept opérationnel qui donne aux hommes une certaine légitimité pour gérer, et souvent détruire, certaines espèces. À l’heure où la France vient d’adopter la loi sur la reconquête de la biodiversité, la question des « nuisibles » reprend une singulière acuité avec la multiplication d’espèces exotiques envahissantes et les vives controverses qui demeurent autour du loup, du renard mais aussi de l’utilisation des insecticides et des herbicides pour se défaire de « gêneurs ». Si la notion de « nuisible » demeure centrale dans la gestion du sauvage par nos sociétés, elle s’avère très variable selon l’époque, l’espèce, le territoire ou le groupe social considéré. Pour dresser un état de la recherche, historiciser cette notion et éclairer les enjeux actuels, il convient de croiser les regards afin de caractériser les différentes conceptions de la notion de « nuisible » qui coexistent actuellement et d’en retracer les origines, tout en s’ouvrant aux acteurs du présent. Ainsi cet ouvrage entend contribuer à explorer les interactions entre les sociétés et la nature, et permettre de mieux saisir leurs coévolutions.

    Description: À la suite des dernières volontés du roi Attale III, le royaume de Pergame fut légué au peuple romain en 133 avant J.-C. : un tel événement constitua un choc considérable pour les notables de la célèbre cité, laquelle bénéficiait cependant du statut de civitas libera. Dès lors, ceux qu’on désignait comme les aristoi andres, c’est-à-dire les hommes les plus aptes à prendre les rênes de la vie politique pergaménienne, formèrent une force de substitution à la monarchie. Ces personnages influents, riches et reconnus par leurs concitoyens, consolidèrent leur domination en endossant des magistratures, des liturgies et en se montrant évergètes. Si Pergame fut marquée à l’époque républicaine par de nombreux troubles, le Haut-Empire proposa de nouvelles perspectives politiques à ces notables. Intégrés à l’empire, les plus brillants d’entre eux formèrent alors une éclatante élite et devinrent des partenaires parfois privilégiés des empereurs sur le plan politique. Selon l’historien allemand Helmut Halfmann, les notables de Pergame auraient été des personnages particulièrement conservateurs, qui auraient maintenu dans la cité des traditions héritées directement de l’époque attalide, et rétifs à l’implantation de traditions ou de valeurs nouvelles, essentiellement celles de Rome. Un certain nombre d’arguments viennent nuancer cette grille de lecture. Certes, seule la plus haute strate de la société apparaît dans les sources épigraphiques, ce qui indique que la vie politique était en quelque sorte cadenassée par les élites les plus riches, d’un niveau social exceptionnel, d’autant plus que les titres honorifiques, particulièrement rares dans la cité, étaient également monopolisés par ces notables. Pour autant, ces personnages brillants étaient-ils plus conservateurs qu’ailleurs ? Il semble plutôt qu’il s’agissait de notables capables de s’adapter consciemment au nouvel ordre romain, à travers la mise en place et le développement du culte impérial voire la modification de certains sanctuaires traditionnels au profit du culte de l’empereur, par exemple l’Asklépieion. De même, la position « monarchique » de certains d’entre eux doit être nuancée, et le maintien de cultes hérités de l’époque attalide ne saurait témoigner d’un conservatisme forcené, puisque c’est un phénomène que l’on retrouve dans bon nombre d’autres cités.

    Description: Si l’histoire traditionnelle de l’hérésie au Moyen Âge s’est longtemps confondue avec celle des exclus de la société, l’approche récente se focalise davantage sur les diverses autorités qui, au coeur du pouvoir, élaborèrent la norme religieuse : l’hérésie n’existe que parce que l’orthodoxie en a d’abord décidé. Il reste que, loin de se présenter comme une essence immuable, elle s’impose tout au long du Moyen Âge comme un concept et une qualification d’une très grande plasticité. L’extension progressive du domaine de l’hérésie à de nombreuses formes de dissidence finit par lui assurer le statut d’un crime englobant. Cette enquête collective repose sur la conviction que c’est encore en se situant aux marges de l’hérésie, au contact d’activités répréhensibles voisines, telles que l’usure, la sorcellerie ou encore la rébellion politique, que l’on peut le mieux saisir les principes et les mécanismes de la fabrique de l’hérésie.

Quelles sont les raisons qui expliquent que cette bataille – une parmi tant d’autres qui ont émaillé les conflits du xxe siècle – a d’emblée revêtu une dimension historique pour les contemporains ? Pourquoi précisément cette opération militaire est-elle désormais régulièrement commémorée par autant de chefs d’État sous le regard des télévisions du monde entier ? Comment expliquer le statut si particulier acquis par cet événement au fil des décennies, jusqu’au projet d’inscription des plages du Débarquement au patrimoine de l’Unesco ? En revenant à la dramatisation des enjeux d’une bataille annoncée près de quatre années à l’avance, mais aussi aux ressorts politiques, idéologiques, économiques et culturels qui ont contribué à transcender l’événement en épopée, cet ouvrage s’interroge sur la quête d’identité de chacun des acteurs nationaux à travers l’évolution de leur mémoire. Ainsi peut-on mieux comprendre la surprenante transformation de l’épisode guerrier en symbole universel de paix et de liberté.

    Description: La popularité actuelle de Sherlock Holmes, son importance dans notre paysage, posent la question de savoir pourquoi il est, plus que jamais, notre contemporain. Notre société, plus victorienne qu’il n’y paraît, voit monter un certain nombre d’angoisses et d’inquiétudes urbaines – économiques, sociales, médicales – qui ravivent du même coup le paradigme d’un enquêteur quasi infaillible, capable de résoudre, avec rapidité, élégance et brio des énigmes pourtant retorses, défiant les compétences de la police officielle. Un retour au texte de Conan Doyle montre pourtant que ce paradigme est instable, que le détective est capable de toutes les métamorphoses et de tous les déguisements. Le fait que la série de la BBC Sherlock transpose aujourd’hui avec une aisance ludique l’univers créé par Conan Doyle dans le Strand Magazine à la fin des années 1880 illustre la foncière plasticité et adaptabilité de la figure du célèbre détective, jusque dans le monde des téléphones portables et d’Internet qui est le nôtre. Les actes du colloque international « Sherlock Holmes : un nouveau limier pour le XXIe siècle » tenu à Cerisy-la-Salle en 2014 remontent aux sources mêmes du mythe littéraire pour suivre les évolutions subies par ce couple éminemment malléable qu’est le duo formé par Sherlock Holmes et le Dr Watson. Des premières adaptations pour l’écran muet, réalisées du vivant même de l’auteur, jusqu’aux séries télévisées actuelles, entre réécritures et pastiches qui passent par le cinéma, la BD, et la littérature, les auteurs ici réunis traquent les formes esthétiques et les supports divers qui ont porté l’image protéiforme du détective et de son acolyte jusqu’à nous, creusant le personnage aux attributs si reconnaissables pour mieux en dégager la profondeur. Venu à nous « d’un Londres de gaz et de bruine », Sherlock Holmes est bien, selon Borges, « une de ces bonnes manies qui nous restent ».

Animés par l’aspiration commune à redéfinir les rapports entre l’homme et la nature pour transformer la société, ces mouvements n’en sont pas moins fort divers dans leur positionnement politique, leur répertoire d’action et leur approche des enjeux environnementaux, bref, dans leur culture écologique. Au confluent de l’histoire politique et de l’histoire environnementale, mobilisant des archives inédites, cet ouvrage se penche sur la genèse et la construction de ces mouvements sur le terrain et dans les urnes. Tout au long des années soixante-dix, les militants de cette nébuleuse s’efforcent de donner forme à leur mouvement et d’en promouvoir l’unité. Après une période fructueuse entre 1974 et 1978, durant laquelle la contestation antinucléaire bat son plein, les écologistes sont confrontés à la fin de la décennie à un contexte politique, social et économique radicalement nouveau avec l’installation de la crise économique dans la durée et la banalisation relative des enjeux environnementaux. Ces sorties des années 68 constituent alors un temps de remise en cause et parfois de désengagement qui conduit certains militants à se rallier à l’idée d’une structure partidaire auparavant rejetée pour fonder les Verts en 1984.

    Description: En 1626, une première compagnie par actions est formée à l’initiative de Richelieu pour mener la colonisation des Petites Antilles et organiser le trafic transatlantique. Elle repose sur les associés, des proches du cardinal, qui en possèdent le capital et en assurent la direction. En 1635, elle est réorganisée afin de pouvoir satisfaire d’une façon plus efficace les objectifs qui lui ont été fixés par la monarchie, à savoir, conquérir et peupler des terres et favoriser le commerce. Elle prend alors le nom de Compagnie des îles de l’Amérique. Sous sa conduite, les Français déjà établis à Saint-Christophe s’installent à la Guadeloupe et à la Martinique et affichent des prétentions sur la Grenade, Sainte-Croix, Saint- Martin et Saint-Barthélemy. Plusieurs milliers de colons tentent l’aventure en franchissant l’océan à la quête d’un meilleur avenir et de richesses. Les terres sont exploitées pour satisfaire les besoins de la métropole. Quelques grands domaines s’appuyant sur une main-d’œuvre constituée d’esclaves africains développent de nouvelles productions comme le sucre et l’indigo. Mais la Compagnie est bientôt confrontée à de multiples difficultés qui remettent en cause son fonctionnement et ses finalités. Les tensions dans les îles et les faibles retombées de sa politique économique conduisent les associés à cesser progressivement leurs activités à partir de 1649. Sa fin pourtant ne signifie pas l’échec de la colonisation française des Petites Antilles. L’héritage qu’elle lègue va fructifier durant les décennies suivantes et donner naissance au premier empire colonial français.

Mais leur histoire n’a pas été un long fleuve tranquille : les Éditions du Cerf ont traversé bien des orages du fait de leurs positions d’ouverture sur les grandes crises du xxe siècle : condamnation par Rome de l’Action française, guerre d’Espagne, Seconde Guerre mondiale, guerre froide ou guerre d’Algérie. C’est ce parcours mouvementé, conjuguant histoire générale et histoire religieuse, que retrace ce livre, rédigé de première main par un universitaire familier de tels événements, avec les archives des provinces dominicaines françaises. Il éclaire tout un pan de l’histoire du catholicisme en France au xxe siècle.

    Description: This open access book identifies various forms of heritage destruction and analyses their causes. It proposes strategies for avoiding and solving conflicts, based on integrating heritage into the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It reflects on the identity-building role of heritage, on multidimensional conflicts and the destruction of heritage, and considers conflict-solving strategies and future perspectives. Furthermore, it engages theoretically and practically with the concepts of responsibility, reconciliation and sustainability, relating mainly to four Sustainable Development Goals, i.e. SDGs 4 (education), 11 (e.g. World Heritage), 13 (climate action) and 17 (partnerships for the goals). More than 160 countries have inscribed properties on the UNESCO World Heritage list since the World Heritage Convention came into force. Improvements in the implementation of the Convention, such as the Global Strategy for a Representative, Balanced and Credible World Heritage List, have occurred, but other conflicts have not been solved. The book advocates for a balanced distribution of properties and more effective strategies to represent the global diversity of cultural and natural heritage. Furthermore it highlights the importance of heritage in identity building.

    Description: Globalement, la question de l’arrière a été relativement peu mobilisée de manière transversale et transnationale par une historiographie de la Grande Guerre longtemps assez indifférente à cet « autre front ». Si les mobilisations militaires ont été largement étudiées, celles propres aux sociétés civiles européennes traversées par la guerre constituent en revanche encore un champ à la fois très vaste et partiellement défriché : comment, loin du front, dans une Europe déchirée par la guerre, les populations ont-elles réussi à s’adapter à un quotidien complètement bouleversé ? Quelles ont été les formes et les degrés de leurs mobilisations ou de leurs résistances ? C’est à ces questions que le présent ouvrage entend répondre en articulant quatre thématiques principales jusqu’à présent assez peu abordées dans un cadre européen, emboîtant les échelles nationales régionales, départementales voire villageoises. Les aspects économiques sont ainsi essentiels à la compréhension d’un conflit qui s’appuie comme jamais auparavant sur des productions de masse reconfigurant le cadre productif. L’encadrement des individus par les initiatives privées ou étatiques contribue de manière décisive à la mobilisation dans la durée des populations civiles. Par ailleurs, le croisement des expériences rurales et citadines, dans des espaces encore mal connus, met en lumière des acteurs locaux pris entre les pratiques ordinaires et l’extraordinaire du temps de guerre. Enfin, l’étude de la construction et de l’hybridation des identités et des représentations à l’arrière permet une relecture neuve des expériences vécues du conflit.

Le propos est, ainsi, de dépeindre de manière systématique la philosophie de Walton dans un paysage de philosophie contemporaine et, dans une moindre mesure, sur fond d’étendues d’histoire de la philosophie. Kendall L. Walton est l’un des plus importants philosophes de l’art et esthéticiens de la seconde moitié du xxe siècle. Son maître-ouvrage, Mimesis as Make-Believe, eut une grande influence, encore prégnante à cette heure, dans le monde analytique.

    Description: Depuis le lancement du programme de séquençage du génome humain, le développement continu des technologies et des langages génétiques a fait émerger une riche littérature au croisement de la sociologie, de l’anthropologie et de la philosophie s’interrogeant sur la place grandissante acquise par le gène dans nos sociétés. Si la notion de génétisation s’y est imposée comme schème interprétatif critique des processus en jeu, celle-ci se voit aujourd’hui en partie dépassée consécutivement au développement de nouvelles modalités de diffusion des technologies génétiques. L’apparition d’une offre d’autotests génétiques par le biais d’Internet laisse en effet apparaître une autonomisation de la dynamique de génétisation au sein de la société, soit l’émergence d’une auto-génétisation à l’heure où la génomique en vient à se pratiquer en version Do-It-Yourself. Sur la base d’une enquête par observations ethnographiques de divers espaces numériques et d’entretiens, il ressort que des publics grandissants se voient désormais acquis à l’intérêt qu’il y aurait à s’orienter vers les gènes pour pouvoir se constituer un « capital santé » ou un « capital généalogique ». Au cœur de cette dynamique où le génétique en vient à englober des domaines en expansion, touchant tout autant à la santé qu’à la construction de l’identité, la génétisation n’apparaît plus seulement comme une opération de nature intellectuelle conduisant à valoriser le rôle des gènes face aux facteurs dits d’environnement, mais aussi et surtout comme une entreprise pratique au cours de laquelle l’individu en vient à se tourner vers ses gènes pour faire face à un environnement devenu incertain.

Réputé comme savant et admiré pour ses vertus de son vivant même, il n’était pas, c’est vrai, un soldat commun. Ce livre ne consiste pas en une biographie du célébré. Son objet est sa célébration même, depuis la Révolution française jusqu’à la Grande Guerre. Pour cela, parmi les outils fournis par les sciences sociales il manie plus spécialement celui de l’admiration. Ainsi nous comprenons pourquoi la gloire du « petit héros » La Tour d’Auvergne n’a cessé de grandir durant tout le xixe siècle. Héros célébré par la « grande patrie », comme par sa « petite patrie », et par son régiment, La Tour d’Auvergne est aussi un cas à partir duquel la construction nationale à l’œuvre peut se voir et se comprendre. Ce cas permet également de décrire le phénomène social de l’admiration, si prégnant que la société dans laquelle il se développa est ici qualifiée de « société d’admiration ». La Tour d’Auvergne est aujourd’hui bien oublié. L’ouvrage cherche donc enfin à comprendre comment et pourquoi l’admiration pour les héros s’est amoindrie, a cessé, voire a transformé certains modèles d’hier en repoussoirs à déboulonner.

Mais de quoi parle-t-on au juste? « Je connais tel élu et il a le bras long, il pourra me trouver une place à la mairie! » Si la phrase est courante, quelles réalités et quels fantasmes recouvre-t-elle précisément ? Alors que le phénomène du clientélisme a déjà fait l’objet de plusieurs études en sociologie et sciences politiques, cette pratique originale a moins retenu l’attention des historiens du politique. Spécialiste de l’histoire politique française contemporaine, Julie Bour entend étudier les acteurs, causes, modalités et limites du clientélisme via une approche quantitative originale et inédite, reposant sur l’exploitation statistique de corpus importants de courriers de recommandation, dépassant parfois les milliers de lettres entre les élus et leurs administrés et portant sur des dossiers sensibles, symboliques ou plus prosaïques (emplois, décorations, service militaire, aide sociale, affaires communales, etc.). Elle concentre son analyse sur un espace test particulier qui est celui de la Lorraine et l’appréhende sur le temps long qui va de la IIIe République aux années 2000. Au travers d’études de cas portant sur des élus célèbres (Louis Jacquinot, Pierre Messmer, François Guillaume, Christian Pierret) ou plus anonymes (Jean Bernard, Jules Develle, André Savard) qui représentent l’ensemble des courants politiques, le clientélisme apparaît pour ce qu’il est réellement : une pratique très répandue (et non limité à un Sud méditerranéen arriéré), qui structure la vie politique locale, mobilise tout un réseau d’intercesseurs relais, crée des solidarités fines entre l’élu et les électeurs, et joue un rôle parfois déterminant dans l’élection et la longévité politique de certains parlementaires. Cette pratique, ancrée sur la durée, institutionnalisée au point d’être déculpabilisée, interroge la démocratie dans ses limites en termes de corruption et de clientélisme.

    Description: Il y a près d’un siècle, les premières réunions de la Jeunesse ouvrière chrétienne française se tenaient à Lille. Assemblés autour d’un prêtre, de jeunes hommes s’engageaient pour rendre aux ouvriers leur fierté et leur apporter la foi. Bien vite se sont organisées des associations comparables pour les jeunes garçons et filles issus d’autres catégories sociales. Ces mouvements n’ont pas permis la rechristianisation espérée, mais ils sont devenus de formidables vecteurs d’éducation populaire ; ils ont bouleversé la vie de plusieurs générations de militants et ont formé nombre de cadres pour la société et pour l’Église. Cette dernière contrôlait et appuyait cette mobilisation des laïcs, qu’elle appelait « Action catholique spécialisée ». Mais ce terme traduit-il vraiment la diversité des expériences vécues à la base ? Et comment expliquer l’épuisement de ce dispositif si performant jusqu’aux Trente Glorieuses ? Comment ces bouleversements ont-ils été vécus ? Où les énergies et les convictions sociales, politiques et religieuses se sont-elles ensuite réinvesties ? En abordant ces questions, cet ouvrage – qui mêle les analyses scientifiques aux témoignages d’anciens militants et aumôniers – permet de mieux comprendre les profondes mutations de la société française, du militantisme et du christianisme.

Que sont et que font les émotions en politique ? Vingt-sept coauteurs sont ici réunis pour en débattre, en proposer les illustrations, les limites, les orientations disciplinaires. Volontairement courts et centrés sur leur thèse principale, les vingt-deux chapitres sont répartis en trois dimensions. La première traite des émotions au prisme du politique, autour d’événements et de territoires. La deuxième envisage le politique au risque des émotions, où elles sont clairement associées à des dispositifs de sensibilisation ou émergeant, de façon plus inattendue, d’univers qu’on aurait pu croire ceux de la répression de tout sentiment. La troisième se veut un carrefour disciplinaire, où sont explicités les enjeux de méthode et les perspectives d’échange.

Cultivant une image d'organisations indépendantes, voire privées, les fondations politiques sont pourtant financées quasi-exclusivement sur fonds publics. Cet ouvrage retrace la genèse de ces organisations paradiplomatiques et leurs stratégies d'internationalisation à travers leur engagement en Europe centrale et, plus particulièrement, en Pologne. Il analyse la manière dont les fondations, grâce à leur double ancrage dans le champ politique allemand et celui de l'action publique extérieure, sont devenues des acteurs majeurs de la politique étrangère. Fluide biologique, réalité concrète de la vie qui palpite ou s’enfuit, plus ou moins épais, visqueux ou translucide, il est porteur de tout un imaginaire que les Anciens ont interrogé durant l’Antiquité gréco-romaine. Du sang du crime à celui du combat, du sacrifice à la mort du martyr, de la magie à la cuisine, un univers rouge semble ressortir de cette Antiquité fantasmée. Marqué du sceau de l’ambivalence, il a quelque chose de magique : porteur de vie et de mort, le sang signe les saisons du corps féminin et annonce la mort quand il sourd de la blessure du guerrier : il est le baromètre de la vie qui dit aussi la parenté. Clé de compréhension des cultures antiques, considéré au travers d’un large cadre géographique et chronologique, le sang offre une lecture tant historique qu’anthropologique des corps. Plusieurs dimensions ont été retenues : les pouvoirs du sang réels ou supposés, le sang vecteur de communication, le sang communautaire qui dit la filiation et l’appartenance du groupe et enfin la violence qui le fait couler. C’est une histoire du sensible qui est menée ici par le liquide biologique vital, par la couleur, celle du sang rouge ou noir, de la pourpre. C’est aussi une histoire sociale car, par le sang c’est la transmission, la descendance et la filiation, la souillure, la pureté, les rites que l’on observe ; c’est encore une histoire de la guerre, du crime et de la justice.

    Description: La technologie désigne bien souvent les « nouvelles technologies » et les « technosciences » qui réduisent la technique aux applications de la science. Pourtant, au xixe siècle, la technologie revêt un autre sens, celui d’une science de la technique, c’est-à-dire d’une science des arts et des intentions fabricatrices. Le caméralisme a joué un rôle fondamental dans l’édification de cette discipline dont l’un des textes fondateurs est l’Entwurf der algemeinen Technologie de Johann Beckmann (1806). Dans cet essai, Beckmann propose une science nouvelle, la technologie générale, qui classe les activités humaines par opérations. Maintes fois cité et jamais traduit, il fallait rendre disponible en français ce texte essentiel, qui a ouvert la voie à une compréhension générale de l’action et à la philosophie des techniques. Tous ceux qui s’intéressent aux savoirs de l’action trouveront chez Beckmann la tentative la plus aboutie de formalisation du geste comme unité fondamentale de l’activité humaine. Pour la première fois, l’Entwurf der algemeinen Technologie a fait l’objet d’une traduction menée par le regretté Joost Mertens, avec la collaboration de Guillaume Carnino et de Jochen Hoock. À l’occasion de cette publication et afin d’approfondir la réflexion sur le creuset européen de la technologie, une analyse est proposée au fil d’articles qui accompagnent la traduction. L’enjeu est d’une part d’étudier un milieu savant à travers sa formation, ses activités, ses techniques intellectuelles et d’autre part, d’interroger les résonances de la technologie.

Quelques décennies plus tard, la guerre du Pacifique (1879-1883), véritable désastre pour le Pérou, fut cependant interprétée comme la preuve de l’échec de l’intégration nationale, générant de nouveaux débats sur la place des Indiens dans la société péruvienne. Cet ouvrage analyse la façon dont furent perçues les populations autochtones andines par les élites créoles entre 1821 et 1879, période charnière, et pourtant peu connue, entre la pensée coloniale et les courants indigénistes de la fin du xixe et du début du xxe siècle. Il propose une histoire culturelle des représentations à partir de la législation, des discours politiques, de la presse, de divers essais, d’œuvres littéraires et de l’iconographie. Ces sources révèlent toute l’ambiguïté de ces discours et visent à mieux comprendre les fondements de la nation péruvienne encore aujourd’hui.

Alors que le rôle des disciplines scolaires dans la construction des États-nations commence à être bien connu, il est intéressant de comprendre comment les rapports entre sociétés, pouvoirs et disciplines scolaires ont évolué depuis 1945 et jusqu’à nos jours, dans des contextes démocratiques ou autoritaires. Sous l’effet de la démocratisation scolaire ou de l’emprise grandissante de l’évaluation, les facteurs qui déterminent l’organisation et le contenu des disciplines scolaires ont beaucoup changé. L’étude de ces transformations ne se fait pas uniquement à travers l’analyse des outils pédagogiques mais met ceux-ci en relation avec des changements plus larges concernant la géopolitique ou les politiques nationales, les évolutions démographiques, les changements des mentalités et des cultures transmises.

    Description: Annoncée en France en 1998 sous impulsion européenne, la lutte contre les discriminations raciales n’a jamais été véritablement portée par un gouvernement. L’ouvrage analyse, à différentes échelles d’intervention, les processus multiples de refoulement de la discrimination ethno-raciale : la dilution et l’euphémisation du problème pour en extraire sa dimension ethno-raciale, l’éviction du débat politique par des instruments consensuels, enfin la délégation de l’action à des experts et aux territoires. S’appuyant sur un matériau empirique dense, l’auteure examine, dans un second temps, la fabrique de la lutte contre les discriminations ethno-raciales dans une ville. Dans ce contexte de fortes dénégations, l’action publique locale se trouve limitée et incertaine. L’analyse des usages du droit de la non-discrimination montre que la loi, fortement concurrencée, fonctionne davantage comme une contrainte à gérer que comme un idéal à atteindre. L’action tente aussi de s’allier les minoritaires, mais contrairement aux discours sur l’abus de l’argument victimaire, ceux-ci sont peu enclins à protester publiquement contre les épreuves qu’ils vivent. Alors que les enquêtes ne cessent de confirmer la réalité de ces discriminations, ce livre, issu d’une thèse, offre des clés de lecture pour la recherche et pour l’action.

    Description: Si la présence du handicap dans l’histoire peut sembler un invariant, il n’en est pas de même de sa perception. En se penchant sur les sources qui permettent d’aborder une telle question, on remarque très vite qu’en dehors des restes osseux, que seul le regard d’un anthropologue peut faire parler, l’historien est confronté à une subjectivité qu’il ne peut ignorer. Saisir cette subjectivité permet de rendre la perception du handicap et la condition des êtres qui en sont atteints au sein d’une société donnée. Le regard de l’autre est l’élément qui conditionne l’existence d’un individu dans les sociétés anciennes, sa capacité à être pleinement un homme, notamment pour un citoyen romain, de sa naissance à sa mort. Dès lors, la répugnance prêtée à la société romaine pour les atteintes au corps semble être la condition de l’inclusion ou de l’exclusion des individus dans le corps social, ce qui n’est pas sans incidences, car « l’œil du spectateur » n’est pas un simple vecteur de préjugés mais peut donner lieu à des définitions juridiques avec des répercussions politiques, sociales et religieuses. Le but de ce livre est d’étudier, en associant à la fois approche historique et démarche anthropologique, à partir d’un large dépouillement de la documentation littéraire et archéologique, les perceptions et représentations de l’atteinte corporelle du ier s. av. n. è. au ive s. n. è. et leurs évolutions. Il s’agit de dépeindre comment furent considérées et assistées les personnes concernées, à Rome et dans le monde romain, au travers de problématiques qui, pour certaines, sont toujours d’une saisissante actualité dans les sociétés contemporaines.

    Description: Qu’est-ce qu’être parent aujourd’hui ? À partir d’une importante enquête qualitative auprès de familles, diverses du point de vue de leur configuration et de leur origine sociale et géographique, et de divers professionnels de la petite enfance, notre ouvrage montre que les familles sont loin de rester passives face à l’imposition de règles de conduite d’une « bonne parentalité ». Elles interprètent différemment les normes, se les approprient, les rejettent ou s’y adaptent sur la base de compromis négociés avec les institutions et les professionnels de la petite enfance. Il est remarquable que le travail permanent exercé sur les normes familiales ne soit pas linéaire et aboutisse à la coexistence d’une pluralité de conceptions de la « bonne parentalité », plus ou moins innovantes, contestataires ou traditionnelles. Ce qui frappe aujourd’hui est cet enchevêtrement de normes traditionnelles résistantes, de normes contestées et négociées et de nouvelles normes inventées qui transforment les référentiels de la famille moderne. Plus qu’au déclin de l’institution familiale, souvent déploré dans le discours public et relayé par les spécialistes de l’enfance ou les observateurs de la vie sociale, notre enquête nous a confrontées à un processus permanent d’institutionnalisation de la famille tant par sa contestation des normes en place que par sa volonté d’inventer de nouvelles façons de « faire famille ».

    Description: Depuis un demi-siècle, la sociologie politique a mis l’accent sur la notion de « minorité » qu’ignoraient aussi bien l’Antiquité grecque que la France des Bourbons. Si les minorités religieuses sont donc une construction des sciences sociales, elles constituent cependant depuis des siècles des communautés dont on retrouve des caractéristiques à différentes époques. Le présent ouvrage envisage la place que tient la religion dans l’identité des minorités, à partir de trois axes : la spécificité de l’identité religieuse des minorités, puisque celles-ci se définissent selon d’autres critères (linguistiques, sociaux, politiques, etc.) que la religion ; la manière dont les minorités religieuses ont été observées et jugées par des personnes qui leur étaient extérieures (juristes, théologiens, voyageurs ou diplomates) ; les stratégies adoptées pour vivre sa différence. L’espace retenu est l’Europe et la Méditerranée, du ve siècle avant J.-C. à la fin du xviiie siècle. Cette zone, marquée par le développement des trois religions monothéistes, offre un cadre d’étude cohérent. Les historiens disposent de sources variées, qu’ils peuvent croiser, pour suivre l’évolution des relations entre des communautés qui s’y côtoient depuis des siècles.

    Description: La mer et le désert, l’île et l’oasis, des objets qui entrent a priori assez rarement en relation mutuelle. Pourtant, depuis Hérodote, qui décrit les oasis du désert Libyque comme des « îles des Bienheureux », une connivence a souvent été entrevue entre ces deux entités, et le parallèle s’est prolongé jusqu’aux époques contemporaines. Ce volume rassemble les contributions de spécialistes de toutes les périodes historiques et de disciplines diverses, autour d’un rapprochement à la fois stimulant et porteur d’interrogations. Dans la continuité de l’ouvrage Mer et montagne dans la culture européenne, dirigé par A. Cabantous, J.-L. Chappey, N. Richard et F. Walter et paru aux PUR en 2011, les auteurs mettent en regard mer et désert en s’interrogeant tout d’abord sur le vécu de ces espaces : écrivains et voyageurs ont souvent comparé traversées au long cours et méharées, s’essayant parfois à une théorisation de ce rapprochement. Mais quelle est la portée heuristique d’une telle démarche ? Que peut-elle nous enseigner sur les espaces comparés ? Face à l’indétermination qui caractérise ces aires de marge, on identifie diverses tentatives technologiques et cartographiques, souvent convergentes, de réduire et traverser ces zones grises. En effet, en dépit de leur marginalité, ces espaces sont tissés de réseaux, maillés de ports insulaires ou caravaniers, dans ce qu’on a pu appeler, dans le cadre méditerranéen, la « connectivité » (Horden et Purcell). Enfin, l’actualité récente rappelle leur dimension stratégique sur le plan politique et économique. La problématique de la captation par les États des réseaux structurant ces espaces et des flux économiques qui leur sont propres va de pair avec les politiques de police des mers et des déserts, contre des populations présentées comme des pirates, mais qui n’en sont souvent que d’autres usagers. L’ouvrage vise à articuler des pratiques historiographiques aussi diverses que l’archéologie, l’histoire des migrations et de l’environnement, l’histoire des sciences, la géohistoire ou l’histoire des représentations, autour d’une approche inédite de la mer et du désert, en prise avec des problématiques contemporaines.

Dans les deux pays, ce sont les médias les moins commerciaux qui ont tendance à offrir une information plus approfondie, plus multiperspectiviste et plus critique. Rodney Benson remet en question les thèses classiques du libéralisme selon lesquelles l’intervention de l’État aurait des effets inhibants sur la presse. Il met au jour les inconvénients et les avantages liés à la vogue actuelle de l’information narrative personnalisée et attire l’attention sur les pratiques journalistiques les plus susceptibles de permettre l’autonomisation de la société civile. Ce livre propose de nouvelles théories et méthodes aux sociologues et aux spécialistes des médias, ainsi que des perspectives neuves aux journalistes, aux responsables politiques et aux citoyens impliqués.

    Description: La léproserie Saint-Lazare, signalée pour la première fois en 1122, était située à proximité de la ville de Paris, dans le faubourg Saint-Laurent. Elle devint en 1632 le berceau de la congrégation de la Mission que saint Vincent de Paul avait fondée quelques années auparavant. D’imposants bâtiments furent alors construits pour abriter une importante communauté. La petite église gothique accolée aux nouveaux bâtiments reçut la tombe du saint fondateur, devenant un haut lieu de pèlerinage que des tableaux de grands maîtres devaient dignifier. La maison et son clos attenant, qui comptait encore 52 hectares de terres en 1789, étaient devenus un domaine préservé dans un Paris toujours plus densément peuplé. Par la suite, cet espace subit des transformations marquantes au cours des xixe et xxe siècles. Accueillant d’importants projets de lotissement dès la Restauration (Nouveau Quartier Poissonnière), ce quartier situé près de la gare du Nord fut l’objet, sous le Second Empire, de réaménagements dont James de Rothschild est le principal acteur. Transformée tour à tour en prison puis en hôpital, la maison survécut aux aléas de l’histoire jusqu’à la démolition partielle des bâtiments en 1940. Seule la nouvelle chapelle et l’infirmerie bâties par Louis-Pierre Baltard témoignent encore aujourd’hui de l’existence du clos Saint-Lazare. Une infirmerie récemment restaurée par la Ville de Paris et qui abrite depuis 2015 la médiathèque Françoise- Sagan. C’est non pas tant l’histoire de la prison pour femmes qui vit passer Louise Michel et Mata Hari que ce livre tente d’éclaircir, que celle de la maison Saint-Lazare et de son clos et, à travers elle, l’économie de la maison mère d’une des principales congrégations de la France d’Ancien Régime et son adaptation successive à différents usages.

Cet ouvrage se penche sur une de ses bordures occidentales, marquée par un mouvement socio-environnemental survenu en 2009. Celui-ci s’est conclu dramatiquement, et a démarré en raison de la remise en cause par le gouvernement du droit de propriété foncière collective des groupes autochtones. Si on a parfois conclu à l’obstruction principielle des indigènes à la marche du progrès, une perspective historienne invite plutôt à revenir sur la relation complexe, nouée par ces mêmes indigènes avec l’État et les dynamiques transnationales qui affectent leurs territoires. C’est le choix fait par cet ouvrage, qui examine un demi-siècle d’histoire dans le Haut Marañón, lieu de vie des Awajún, des Wampís, de populations métisses et d’étrangers, qui donnent à lire un « local » traversé de logiques globalisées. Missionnaires chrétiens, soldats chargés de faire frontière, indigènes allant à la ville et en revenant, colons en quête de subsistances, anthropologues à la recherche d’un autre modèle éducatif, activistes en quête d’une autre construction nationale, ingénieurs, médecins : ces acteurs se croisent, parfois sans se parler, et participent du dialogue difficilement établi avec la selva, cette Amazonie tour à tour fantasmée et crainte, qui n’en a pas moins toute sa place dans l’histoire péruvienne, et dans le débat mondial sur la notion et les modèles de développement.

Encore faut-il pouvoir localiser, identifier et interpréter ces objets et documents de natures variées. Dans cet ouvrage, Lionel Dufaux nous invite à découvrir le corpus ferroviaire de l’une des plus anciennes et importantes collections techniques du monde, au musée du Conservatoire national des arts et métiers. Créé pendant la Révolution française par la Convention, le Conservatoire devait réunir les objets, modèles, dessins, descriptions et livres utiles au perfectionnement de l’industrie nationale. Très vite, à l’aube du xixe siècle, l’institution s’est intéressée aux chemins de fer qui émergeaient alors outre-Manche. Les collections rassemblées depuis les années 1820 forment aujourd’hui un ensemble exceptionnel et sont de précieux témoignages de la naissance du chemin de fer en Europe, de son développement géographique et technique. Mais au-delà de l’histoire matérielle, c’est bien la question de la transmission des savoirs, gestes et pratiques techniques, et les mécanismes de diffusion de l’innovation qui transparaissent, offrant une nouvelle lecture de l’histoire des chemins de fer, éclairée de manière originale par des collections restées largement méconnues.

    Description: À la fin du XIXe siècle, les mines du Nord de la France se sont imposées comme une polarité nouvelle, attirant et agrégeant une main-d’œuvre tant locale que transfrontalière. Mais si ce maelström satisfait les puissantes compagnies, il n’en va pas de même pour les mineurs, dont l’engagement dans la lutte syndicale peine à se départir de ses récents échecs. Entre rancœur et lassitude, la base ouvrière décide de dépasser les cadres politiques, en se tournant non pas vers les chefs, cible attendue, mais vers l’Étranger : du 15 août au 20 septembre 1892, plus d’un millier d’ouvriers belges sont violemment traqués, attaqués puis chassés du bassin minier du Pas-de-Calais, sans autre issue que le retour vers la terre d’où ils étaient partis, quelques mois ou décennies plus tôt. Si cette expulsion collective épouse des formes anciennes de la contestation, toute explication semble se dérober à l’enquête, réduite au seul rôle répressif. La parole des mineurs ressemble à ce réel qui résiste, face aux mises en récits développées « par le haut » : est-ce la faute au nationalisme ? au protectionnisme ? au socialisme ? La concordance des temps de l’émeute, de la presse et du politique semble vaine. Pour l’historien, la vérité de ces obscures semaines erre dans le même ban que celui de ces ouvriers : conduits au silence, pour des raisons de paix sociale, suite à l’acquittement des inculpés français ; ou bien, condition de survie de toute nation selon Renan, à l’oubli suite à la naturalisation massive des Belges. Peu connus, ces événements mettent pourtant en avant une ambiguïté fondamentale de la gauche : la distorsion entre les actes des ouvriers et les espoirs qu’elle plaçait en eux. Cette gêne qui ne cesse de ressurgir est au cœur de cet ouvrage.

Personnages ayant bénéficié d’un enseignement supérieur ou d’une formation sur le terrain, ils déploient, parfois en les cumulant, leurs compétences dans divers domaines : l’Église, l’État ducal, l’administration judiciaire, le notariat, etc. Le présent ouvrage en est l’analyse, réalisée à partir d’un corpus de données prosopographiques constitué de 5 599 individus (Bretons ou étrangers venus en Bretagne), mis au jour grâce aux sources publiées, mais surtout au dépouillement de 5 238 cartons et registres d’archives. Les parcours universitaires et professionnels, les stratégies, les réussites et les échecs, les réseaux, les biens des gens de savoir ont ainsi été mis en exergue. Majoritairement étudiants à Paris, à Angers, et juristes de formation, ils reviennent de plus en plus dans le duché afin d’y faire carrière, en particulier avec le développement de l’État et des administrations ducale et judiciaire, au cours du xve siècle. Très polyvalents, il est fréquent qu’ils exercent deux ou trois fonctions différentes (évêque et chancelier, secrétaire et sénéchal, chanoine et médecin), auxquelles ils accèdent par toutes les techniques et ruses imaginables. Hommes de savoir, hommes de pouvoir, les plus efficaces d’entre eux veillent aussi à se garantir des revenus et un patrimoine mobilier et immobilier parfois très importants.

Il distingue les récits et les images de la catastrophe – en lien avec la forme testimoniale, nés des différentes expériences issues du terrorisme d’État et affrontant des impossibilités représentatives propres aux images et aux récits de l’horreur – et les récits et les images catastrophistes – liés au succès de la fiction allégorique, issus d’une volonté de repoétisation de la mémoire et rejouant des logiques eschatologiques qu’elles soient pessimistes, réflexives ou consolatoires. Parler de résilience à la catastrophe signifie qu’au-delà de la résistance identitaire des individus et politique des collectifs, les œuvres étudiées font preuve d’une puissance d’invention capable de s’adapter aux circonstances changeantes de l’histoire et de la mémoire, et de transformer, en retour et pour l’avenir, ces identités individuelles et ces politiques collectives.

    Description: Les questions environnementales cristallisent des enjeux de pouvoirs comme le montrent les controverses actuelles autour du changement climatique, de la pollution de l’air, de la mise en péril de la biodiversité et de la transition énergétique. Depuis une quarantaine d’années, elles suscitent des mobilisations et font l’objet de négociations et d’oppositions à toutes les échelles. Or cette tendance récente s’ancre dans un passé plus lointain. Ce livre a l’ambition de montrer l’ancienneté et la richesse des liens entre pouvoirs institutionnels et environnement. Les quatorze contributions réunies ici interrogent les modalités de cette relation en balayant plusieurs siècles d’histoire sur trois continents (Europe, Amérique, Afrique). D’abord, les questions environnementales participent de l’affirmation des pouvoirs : les catastrophes naturelles et le surgissement des risques apparaissent comme des moments privilégiés de cette coconstruction. Ensuite, la définition de l’environnement constitue un attribut essentiel des institutions et des acteurs qui, pour défendre des milieux, sont parfois amenés à les politiser. À travers les aménagements et la gestion des confits, l’environnement apparaît enfin en tant que sujet de négociations et objet de jeux d’acteurs complexes au sein desquels les pouvoirs publics jouent un rôle souvent difficile, à l’interface entre des intérêts divergents.

    Description: This unique collection of chapters from world experts on person-centered outcome (PCO) measures addresses the following critical questions: Can individual experiences be represented in measurements that do not reduce unique differences to meaningless uniformity? How person-centric are PCO measures? Are PCO measurements capable of delivering the kind of quality assured quantification required for high-stakes decision making? Are PCO measures likely to support improved health care delivery? Have pivotal clinical studies failed to deliver treatments for diseases because of shortcomings in the PCO measures used? Are these shortcomings primarily matters of precision and meaningfulness? Or is the lack of common languages for communicating outcomes also debilitating to quality improvement, research, and the health care economy? Three key issues form an urgent basis for further investigation. First, the numbers generated by PCO measures are increasingly used as the central dependent variables upon which high stakes decisions are made. The rising profile of PCO measures places new demands for higher quality information from scale and test construction, evaluation, selection, and interpretation. Second, PCO measurement science has well-established lessons to be learned from those who have built and established the science over many decades. Finally, the goal in making a PCO measurement is to inform outcome management. As such, it is vitally important that key stakeholders understand that, over the last half century, developments in psychometrics have refocused measurement on illuminating clinically important individual differences in the context of widely reproduced patterns of variation in health and functioning, comparable scale values for quality improvement, and practical explanatory models. An engineering student will not qu- tion a statement like “the velocity of the electrons in atoms is ?1% of the velocity of light”, a physics student will. Regarding units, I have written factors h and c explicitly in all equations throughout the book. For physics students it would be preferable to use the convention that is common in physics and omit these constants in the equations, but that would probably be confusing for the engineering students. Physics students tend to be more interested in theoretical physics courses. However, physics is an experimental science and physics students should und- stand how experiments work, and be able to make experiments work.     Description: Mai 1967, au Nigeria, la République du Biafra déclare son indépendance. Bientôt, la guerre civile et la famine ravagent la région et font progressivement irruption dans les médias européens et américains. Les photographies du conflit soulèvent une émotion considérable en Occident L’enclave sécessionniste et les zones reprises par l’armée nigériane deviennent alors le théâtre d’importantes opérations de secours, élaborées et financées par de multiples organisations et gouvernements. S’inscrivant dans une historiographie de l’humanitaire en plein renouvellement, ce livre raconte l’histoire de la guerre, de sa métamorphose en une crise internationale et des réponses qui ont été apportées. Basé sur un important corpus de sources provenant de fonds d’archives français, britanniques, suisses, nigérians et américains, il offre une plongée dans le monde de l’humanitaire à la fin des années 1960. Il montre les reconfigurations qui s’y opèrent à l’heure postcoloniale en proposant des échelles d’observation complémentaires - internationale, nationale et locale. L’ouvrage revisite par ailleurs quelques-unes des controverses qui se sont développées autour du conflit à propos de l’instrumentalisation de l’aide, de ses liens avec le politique, de la réception des opérations de secours sur le terrain ou encore de la naissance du sans-frontiérisme et du témoignage. Il revient ainsi sur la place occupée par la crise du Biafra dans l’histoire de l’aide humanitaire.
