    Notizen: Abstract Methods of theoretical study in seismic wave scattering are reviewed with the emphasis on the perturbation method. Detailed analysis for weak scattering using Born approximation is given. For elastic random media, the mean square amplitudes of scattered waves are derived using a new approach by working directly in the spectrum domain. The conditions for the scalar wave approximation are obtained. The problem of sensitivity of fore- and backscattering to heterogeneities with different scales and properties (velocity or impedance) is discussed.

    Notizen: Abstract The migration of contaminants in heterogeneous aquifers involves dispersive processes that act at different scales. The interaction of these processes as a plume evolves can be studied by micro-scale modelling whereby two scales, a local- or micro-scale and an aquifer- or macro-scale, are covered simultaneously. Local-scale dispersive processes are represented through the local dispersion coefficient in the transport equation, while large-scale dispersion due to heterogeneities is represented through the resolution of the flow field and the diffusive exchange between streamtubes. The micro-scale model provides both the high degree of resolution compatible with local-scale processes, and the extent required for the approach to asymptotic conditions, using grids of up to a million nodal points. The model is based on the dual potential-streamfunction formulation for flow, and the transport problem is formulated in a natural coordinate system provided by the flownet. Simulations can be used to verify stochastic theories of dispersion, without the restrictive assumptions inherent in the theory. For the two-dimensional case, results indicate convergence of the effective dispersivity to the theoretical macrodispersivity value. Convergence takes place within a travel distance of about 50 correlation lengths of the hydraulic conductivity field. However, the approach taken to asymptotic conditions, as well as the macrodispersivity value, may differ for different realizations of the same medium. The influence of early-time events such as plume splitting on the asymptotic convergence remains to be investigated.

    Notizen: Abstract The analysis and interpretation of coda waves have received increasing attention since the early seventies. In the past few years interest in this subject has spread worldwide, and the study of high-frequency seismic coda waves has become a very important seismological topic. As a conclusion of the studies accomplished in this time, coda waves are considered the result of scattering processes caused by heterogeneities acting on seismic waves.P andS waves play a particularly important role in this interaction. The process introduces an attenuation which, added to the intrinsic absorption, gives the observed apparent attenuation. Therefore, coda waves constitute a thumbprint left by the heterogeneities on the seismograms. Coda waves offer decisive information about the mechanism of how scattering and attenuation take place. This review describes coda waves in detail, and summarizes the work done in this subject to 1986. The relation between coda waves and attenuation in the context of research on seismic scattering problems is stressed. Particular attention has been given to the application of coda waves to estimate source and medium parameters. The state-of-the-art of the temporal variations of coda wave shape, and the possible use of these variations as an earthquake precursor also are presented. Care has been taken to introduce the statistical models used to deal with the heterogeneities responsible for scattering.

    Notizen: Abstract This paper presents an exploratory study of the effect of leaching on mixing in a porous medium containing a single heterogeneity to investigate the effect of the heterogeneity and time-dependent pore structure on dispersion. A percolation-convection simulation (PCS) model is used along with laboratory model experiments to study the mixing. The results show that mixing changes when the pores of the models are leached and that there is a change in regime influence during leaching. The simulation represents the mixing through a first leach for homogeneous media and for heterogeneous media with significant changes in permeability. If the pore structure is changing with time, prediction of mixing must include effects of heterogeneity and regime influence. Although the experimental results are representative of idealized laboratory sized systems they provide insight into the effects of leaching in heterogeneous media. Further the simulation may be useful on a field scale.

    Notizen: Abstract This paper describes a finite element simulator for incompressible two-phase flow. This simulator is based on numerical techniques which are novel to the field of reservoir simulation. It uses irregular meshes, discontinuous high-order finite elements for the approximation of saturations (including Riemann solvers and slope limiters), and the mixed-hybrid formulation of mixed finite elements for an efficient and precise approximation of pressures and velocities. Each injection or production well is simulated by a few one-dimensional implicit models arranged to form a macroelement. This simulator is able to handle gravity, capillary pressures, porosity and permeability (both absolute and relative), and heterogeneity. Numerical results are shown which illustrate the capabilities of the code.

    Notizen: Abstract Recent observations made by Kanamori and Allen about earthquake recurrence time and average stress drop revealed a very interesting relation: earthquakes with longer recurrence times have higher average stress drops. They attributed the difference in stress drop to the difference in long-term average slip rate. To interpret their result in terms of the healing effect, we simulated earthquake recurrence with a one-dimensional mass-spring model, incorporating a recently developed rate-and-state dependent friction law for different loading rates and heterogeneous strength distributions. We first calculated the stress drop and recurrence time as functions of loading rate for a homogenous fault model. We found that the stress drop increases up to 30% when the loading rate decreases from 10 cm/yr to 0.01 mm/yr. Thus, the observed great variability of stress drop, from a few bars to a few hundred bars, which is obtained by replotting the data of Kanamori and Allen in the form of stress drop versus long-term slip rate, may not be attributable to the healing effect alone. Our numerical simulation shows that the variability may be due primarily to the spatial heterogeneity of strength on the fault. Our simulation also suggests that of the two empirical laws that were inferred from the same laboratory friction data, called the power law and the logarithmic law by Shimamoto and Logan, the former can explain the observed relation between stress drop and slip rate better than can the latter, at least for strike-slip fault. The logarithmic law is an earlier and simpler version of the rate-state-dependent friction law.

    Notizen: Abstract We present an overview of the potential applicability of fractal concepts to various aspects of transport phenomena in heterogeneous porous media. Three examples of phenomena where a fractal approach should prove illuminating are presented. In the first example we consider pore level heterogeneities as typified by pore surface roughness. We suggest that roughness may be usefully modelled by fractal curves and surfaces and also cite experimental evidence for regarding pores as fractals. In the second example we consider a fractal network approach to modelling large-scale heterogeneities. The presence of features on all length scales in simple fractal models should capture the essential role played by the presence of heterogeneities on many scales in natural reservoirs. Studies of transport phenomena in such models may yield valuable insights into the problems of macroscopic dispersion. The final example concerns dispersion in multiphase flow. Here the fractal character is attributed to the distribution of the fluid phases rather than the porous medium itself. Again studies of transport phenomena in simple fractal models should help to clarify various problems associated with the corresponding phenomena in real reservoirs.

    Notizen: Abstract This invited lecture enumerates various categories of flow and transport in heterogeneous media with particular reference to this Symposium. Specific attention is given to five topics within these categories. (1) We explore the compounding of spatially variable local permeability K to produce an apparent permeability K * on a scale large compared with that of variation of K. An inverse method generates and analyzes flow systems with K spatially periodic in two and three dimensions. (2) Physical arguments indicate that apparent hydraulic properties of an unsaturated composite medium may not represent any conceivable mean of the properties of the component media. (3) Conventionally, buried holes are thought to stay empty during generally unsaturated soil-water flow. The hole, however, acts as an obstacle to flow so that water may seep through it. The larger the hole the more likely this will happen. (4) Dispersion in heterogeneous porous systems with no maximum scale of variation is explored using a Lagrangian mode of analysis. (5) Comments are offered on ‘geostatistics’ and its application to heterogeneous soils and aquifers.

    Notizen: Abstract Horizontal groundwater flows in unconfined aquifers with horizontal lower boundaries can be found exactly by the seepage analysis that allows the hydraulic conductivity to vary in the vertical direction. The exact analysis of flows when the lower boundary of the aquifer is not a horizontal plane, requires the soil-water pressure on this boundary to be known, and this is not generally the case except in the situation of a freshwater aquifer overlying saline water fed from the sea. For aquifers with spatial variations of hydraulic conductivity in both the vertical and horizontal directions, the seepage analysis can be modified to give groundwater flows in situations where the hydraulic conductivity can be represented by the product of independent functions of the three spatial coordinates. Different forms of three-dimensional variation are generated from suitably chosen functions. The use of such forms in calculations of equivalent uniform hydraulic conductivities of some groundwater flow regions demonstrates the dependence of equivalent hydraulic conductivity values on the flow boundary conditions. The exact groundwater flows calculated for particular groundwater situations by the seepage analysis provide results that are useful in validating numerical methods for solving groundwater problems in heterogeneous soils.
