    A Method of Analysis of V-G Records from Transport Operations (1945)

    Description: A method has been developed for interpreting V-G records taken during the course of commercial transport operation. This method involves the utilization of fairly simple statistical procedures to obtain "flight envelopes," which predict that, on the average, in a stated number of flight hours, one value of airspeed will exceed the envelope, and one positive and one negative acceleration increment will exceed the envelope with equal probability of being experienced at any airspeed. Comparison with the actual data obtained from various airplanes and from various airlines indicates that these envelopes predict the occurrences of large values of acceleration and airspeed with a high degree of accuracy.

    Ditching Tests of a 1/10-Scale Model of the North American XFJ-1 Airplane Ted No. NACA 314 (1948)

    Description: Tests were made of a 1/10-scale dynamically similar model of the North American XFJ-1 airplane to study its behavior when ditched. The model was landed in calm water at the Langley tank no. 2 monorail. Various landing attitudes, speeds, and conditions of damage were simulated. The behavior of the model was determined from visual observations, by recording the accelerations, and by taking motion pictures of the ditchings. Data are presented in tabular form, sequence photographs, and time-history acceleration curves. From the results of the tests it was concluded that the airplane should be ditched at the near-stall, tail-down landing attitude of 12 deg. The flaps should be fully extended to obtain the lowest possible landing speed. The wing-tip tanks should be jettisoned if any appreciable load of fuel remains; if empty, they should be retained for additional buoyancy. In a calm-water ditching the airplane will probably run about 600 feet Maximum longitudinal decelerations of about 2.5g and maximum vertical acceleration of about 2g will be encountered. The nose-intake duct will be clear of the water until practically all forward motion has stopped.

    Notes: Bei einer kritischen Betrachtung der Kohlenwasserstoffsynthese ergibt sich die Aufgabe, einen höheren Anteil des aufgewendeten Gases in das Endprodukt zu überführen und gleichzeitig wertvollere Erzeugnisse zu erhalten. Entsprechende Arbeiten führten zur Entwicklung einer neuen technischen Synthese, die von Kohlenoxyd-Wasserstoff-Gemischen ausgehend Gemische aliphatischer, normaler Alkohole mit aliphatischen Kohlenwasserstoffen ergibt. Nach Besprechung der chemischen Grundlagen werden auch die betriebstechnischen Erfahrungen bei der Synthese mitgeteilt.

    Notes: In der Druckfarbenindustrie wird es als ein Mangel empfunden, daß die Angaben über die Lichtechtheit von Druckfarben für das graphische Gewerbe nur auf empirisch festgestellten Vergleichswerten beruhen und daß es bisher nicht möglich war, zwei verschiedene Farben bezüglich ihres Verhaltens gegenüber Belichtung richtig zu bewerten. Die vorliegende Arbeit stellt einen Versuch dar, die Lichtechtheit von Druckfarben auf Grund ihrer Farbänderung durch Belichtung jederzeit reproduzierbar zahlenmäßig zu erfassen und auf einfache und anschauliche Weise darzustellen. Darum wurde auch vorerst bewußt der exaktere, rein farbmetrische Weg nicht beschritten.
