    Description: Eighteen species of plants, most of which were chosen at random, were sown beside a hedge of Artemisia Absinthium; they were severely injured and in one ease ( Levisticum officinale) even killed by the chemical excretions of the latter within a distance of \xc2\xb1 100 cm; seedlings of Artemisia Absinthium, on the contrary, were not harmed by the plants in the hedge. The experiments were made during two successive summers and in different surroundings; the results were consistent and confirmed those of Bode, notwithstanding the fact that climatic conditions were extremely unfavourable for the excretion of absinthiin and that even during fine weather it appeared to be feeble owing to the sea climate of Leiden. Spells of cold and of heavy rains sometimes kept the excretion so low that temporarily the absinth plants seemed to exert no action at all.\nSeedlings which had survived the proximity of the absinth in their first year developed normally during the next season. It was demonstrated that the proximity of Atriplex hortensis had no influence on the same test plants which were injured by Artemisia Absinthium and that they were only physically oppressed by Artemisia vulgaris, viz. by its spreading, branches. This makes it probable that it is indeed the absinthiin, excreted by Artemisia Absinthium, which causes this species to be harmful to the surrounding plants.\nFresh leaves of Artemisia Absinthium, dug in the soil, reduced the percentage of germination and sometimes also hindered the development of the seedlings of a number of species. Foliage of Artemisia vulgaris had sometimes a similar action, but seldom to the same degree. In the case of A. Absinthium two harmful effects are apparently combined: a too great amount of organic manure and the formation of absinthiin.\nIt will be worth while to examine the ecological importance of Artemisia Absinthium in its natural habitat.

    Description: Among the plants collected in the West-Indies by I. Boldingh during the years 1909 and 1910 there was a grass determined as Paspalum hemisphericum Poir., a name changed into glabrum. These determinations are incorrect because Paspalum hemisphericum Poiret is the same as the wellknown Paspalum paniculatum L. and also quite different from Poiret\xe2\x80\x99s Paspalum glabrum, which, according to Mrs. A. Chase\xe2\x80\x99s investigations, is the Paspalum laxum of Lamarck.\nAmong Bolding\xe2\x80\x99s plants there is a good specimen from the island of Bonaire, which, studied with Chase\xe2\x80\x99s work on the North-American species of Paspalum, could not be identified. In Chase\xe2\x80\x99s work also the species of Central-America and the West-Indian Islands are taken up, moreover the latter are also treated in Hitchcock\xe2\x80\x99s posthumous work on the grasses of that region.

    Description: A collection of samples containing algae from the salines of Bonaire was brought home by Mr P. Wagenaar Hummelinck from his trips to the Netherlands West Indian Islands in 1930 and in 1936\xe2\x80\x941937. Though these trips were chiefly undertaken in order to gather zoological material (1, 2) 1), the collector paid attention to botanical objects as well, results of which are to be found in eight earlier papers (3\xe2\x80\x9410).\nSeveral data concerning Bonaire can be learned from Mr Wagenaar Hummelinck\xe2\x80\x99s publications. The island, having an area of about 265 km2, is chiefly composed of quaternary limestone (coralrocks), which forms a large plateau in the North East and the South. The Northwestern part of the island is much higher and more indented. Klein Bonaire, having an area of only 7 km2 and situated \xc2\xbe km West of Bonaire, consists of a low limestone plateau only.

Nearly a century ago the worker in chemistry Rochleder (10) attempted to show the possibility of this relation and called that branch of science phytochemistry.\nTo begin with, something must be said about the products in question, Glucose, sucrose, several aminoacids and other acids are, of course, left out of account. Only those chemical products, which are more or less specific and characterise larger or smaller groups of plants are considered here.

    Description: La tourbi\xc3\xa8re au Sud de Veenendaal, dans la Vall\xc3\xa9e Gueldroise, ayant environ la forme d\xe2\x80\x99une halt\xc3\xa8re, a son origine dans une nappe d\xe2\x80\x99eau eutrophe, d\xc3\xa9ja pr\xc3\xa9sente lors de la premi\xc3\xa8re phase du tardiglaciaire. Dans les commencements s\xe2\x80\x99y forma un s\xc3\xa9diment (sable humeux), qui se composait, outre de restes v\xc3\xa9g\xc3\xa9taux, de sable apport\xc3\xa9 par le vent. Il est impossible qu\xe2\x80\x99un bras du Rhin ait coul\xc3\xa9 l\xc3\xa0 en ces temps. La tourbe se compose de mati\xc3\xa8res successivement eutrophes et m\xc3\xa9sotrophes. Une grande partie du profil (depuis le d\xc3\xa9but de l\xe2\x80\x99Atlanticum), est compos\xc3\xa9e de tourbe de marais bois\xc3\xa9 (Broekveen). Dans les sondages les plus m\xc3\xa9ridionaux on trouve de l\xe2\x80\x99argile dans les couches sup\xc3\xa9rieures (provenant probablement d\xe2\x80\x99inondations venant du c\xc3\xb4t\xc3\xa9 du Rhin). A mesure qu\xe2\x80\x99on s\xe2\x80\x99approche du Sud, l\xe2\x80\x99argile occupe une place de plus en plus importante dans le profil. Il n\xe2\x80\x99est trace de mati\xc3\xa8res oligotrophes (tourbe de Sphagnum), ni m\xc3\xaame dans le sondage VK (Veenkampen), o\xc3\xb9 cependant la carte g\xc3\xa9ologique mentionne une couche d\xe2\x80\x99argile recouvrant la haute tourbi\xc3\xa8re. La tourbe oligotrophe a sans doute \xc3\xa9t\xc3\xa9 compl\xc3\xa8tement enlev\xc3\xa9e par une extraction commenc\xc3\xa9e d\xc3\xa8s le moyen-\xc3\xa2ge. Il apert que l\xe2\x80\x99histoire des for\xc3\xaats que l\xe2\x80\x99on peut constater dans la tourbe, depuis la premi\xc3\xa8re phase du tardiglaciaire jusqu\xe2\x80\x99\xc3\xa0 la fin de l\xe2\x80\x99Atlanticum (premi\xc3\xa8re apparition de Fagus), est conforme aux r\xc3\xa9sultats acquis pour des tourbi\xc3\xa8res environnantes de cette m\xc3\xaame \xc3\xa9poque, par d\xe2\x80\x99autres investigateurs. Seulement un maximum prononc\xc3\xa9 de Corylus manque dans notre tourbi\xc3\xa8re. Les couches sup\xc3\xa9rieures de la tourbi\xc3\xa8re ne pr\xc3\xa9sentent pas de spectres polliniques r\xc3\xa9cents, mais les spectres qu\xe2\x80\x99on y trouve ferment un ensemble harmonieux avec ceux des couches plus profondes. Nous avons constat\xc3\xa9 que la couche de mousse vivante, dans le Bennekommer Meent offre un spectre pollinique qui repr\xc3\xa9sente assez bien la v\xc3\xa9g\xc3\xa9tation foresti\xc3\xa8re actuelle. Nous avons d\xc3\xa9crit un sondage dans une petite tourbi\xc3\xa8re isol\xc3\xa9e a l\xe2\x80\x99Est du Emmikhuizerberg, qui offre enti\xc3\xa8rement un caract\xc3\xa8re tardiglaciaire. Au cas o\xc3\xb9 l\xe2\x80\x99examen de GL et de AH III et \xc3\xa9ventuellement d\xe2\x80\x99autres sondages (encore en projet), nous ouvriraient de nouveaux horizons, nous donnerons en temps et lieu des informations a ce sujet.\nNous avons accompli cette \xc3\xa9tude au Mus\xc3\xa9e et Herbier Botanique d\xe2\x80\x99Utrecht (Directeur M. le Professeur A.     Description: Originally it had been my intention to write a monograph of the Melastomataceae occurring in the Malay Archipelago. Owing to difficulties caused by the development of the political situation it was impossible for me, to carry out this plan to its full extent. As the important collections of the Herbarium of the Buitenzorg Botanical Garden could not be consulted and as most foreign herbaria too were inaccessible, I had to restrict myself almost entirely to the study of the collections preserved in the Utrecht and Leyden Herbaria. These however, though not so rich as those of the Buitenzorg herbarium, are very important, especially by the large number of type specimens. Of the great number of species described from parts of the Malay Archipelago outside the Dutch influence sphere, the types themselves could as a rule not be examined, and duplicates too were but rarely available. For this reason I was forced to restrict my endeavours almost entirely to the examination of the material collected in the parts known as the Netherlands East Indies. However, all genera known from the malayan region, for so far as they are in my opinion well-defined, have been incorporated in my keys.\nA detailed study of the Netherlands East Indian species was possible for me, as almost all important types are present in the Leyden and Utrecht Herbaria. The Melastomataceae especially those from Sumatra, Java and New Guinea are richly represented in these collections. Borneo, Celebes and the Lesser Sunda Islands probably would yield interesting results. The rich collections obtained from British North Borneo and Sarawak make it probable that the harvest obtained from the Netherlands part of Borneo will also contain many new and interesting forms, but of these collections but a small part has been distributed so far by the Buitenzorg herbarium.

    Description: Het Hurener Veld is gelegen in de provincie Overijssel, ten Noorden van de spoorlijn Almelo-Zwolle; tussen Wierden en Nijverdal (zie kaart, fig. 1). Het maakt deel uit van een klein veen van ongeveer 13,5 km\xc2\xb2, dat nu practisch geheel ontgonnen is. Dit veen ligt in een dal, dat in het Oosten en Westen begrensd wordt door heuvelruggen, die ontstaan zijn door stuwing van de Riss-gletschers.\nAan de Westkant zorgt de Regge voor de afwatering van dit dal. Deze afwatering moet echter zeer onvoldoende zijn geweest, waardoor in het dal veenvorming mogelijk was. Het ontstaan van het aangrenzende moerasveen (lagg) in het Noorden kan ook het gevolg zijn geweest van deze onvoldoende afwatering; ongelukkig genoeg is dit moerasveen geheel ontgonnen, zodat een onderzoek naar het verband met het veen van het Hurener Veld onmogelijk is.

    Description: In recent years Baehni has provided us with some elaborate studies on the Sapotaceae (1, 2) and we understand that it is his intention to continue the series of generic monographs.\nAs I pointed out in a criticism (8) concerning the first of his papers, this seemed not a very successful beginning, be it only because one usually does not start a series of generic monographs by giving a survey of the whole family with the nature of a conclusion, without risking the judgment of prematurity. As might have been expected this paper contains a number of incorrectnesses, which may largely be ascribed to an insufficient knowledge of this intricate and difficult family.

    Description: Following a brief history of the NACA investigation of jet propulsion, a discussion is given of the general investigation and analysis leading to the construction of the jet-propulsion ground-test mock-up. The results of burning experiments and of test measurements designed to allow quantitative flight performance predictions of the system are presented and correlated with calculations. These calculations are then used to determine the performance of the system on the ground and in the air at various speeds and altitudes under various burning conditions. The application of the system to an experimental airplane is described and some performance predictions for this airplane are made.

    Description: The extent of agreement of the theoretical impact computations with the actual phenomenon has not as yet been fully clarified. There is on the one hand a certain imperfection in the theory (simplifying assumptions made) and on the other an insufficiency in the experimental data available. The object of our present paper is to show how far test results agree with the available approximate computation methods, to investigate in greater detail the physical nature of impact on water, and to perfect the experimental method of studying the phenomenon.

    Description: The "general Prandtl number" Pr(exp 1) - A(sub q)/A Pr, aside from the Reynolds number determines the ratio of turbulent to molecular heat transfer, and the temperature distribution in turbulent friction layers. A(sub q) = exchange coefficient for heat; A = exchange coefficient for momentum transfer. A formula is derived from the equation defining the general Prandtl number which describes the temperature as a function of the velocity. For fully developed thermal boundary layers all questions relating to heat transfer to and from incompressible fluids can be treated in a simple manner if the ratio of the turbulent shear stress to the total stress T(sub t)/T in the layers near the wall is known, and if the A(sub q)/A can be regarded as independent of the distance from the wall. The velocity distribution across a flat smooth channel and deep into the laminar sublayer was measured for isothermal flow to establish the shear stress ratio T(sub t)/T and to extend the universal wall friction law. The values of T(sub t)/T which resulted from these measurements can be approximately represented by a linear function of the velocity in the laminar-turbulent transition zone. The effect of the temperature relationship of the material values on the flow near the wall is briefly analyzed. It was found that the velocity at the laminar boundary (in contrast to the thickness of the laminar layer) is approximately independent of the temperature distribution. The temperature gradient at the wall and the distribution of temperature and heat flow in the turbulent friction layers were calculated on the basis of the data under two equations. The derived formulas and the figures reveal the effects of the Prandtl number, the Reynolds number, the exchange quantities and the temperature relationship of the material values.

    Description: The effect of cyclic gas pressure variations on the periodic heat transfer at a flat wall is theoretically analyzed and the differential equation describing the process and its solution for relatively. Small pressure fluctuations developed, thus explaining the periodic heat cycle between gas and wall surface. The processes for pure harmonic pressure and temperature oscillations, respectively, in the gas space are described by means of a constant heat transfer coefficient and the equally constant phase angle between the appearance of the maximum values of the pressure and heat flow most conveniently expressed mathematically in the form of a complex heat transfer coefficient. Any cyclic pressure oscillations, can be reduced by Fourier analysis to harmonic oscillations, which result in specific, mutual relationships of heat-transfer coefficients and phase angles for the different harmonics.

    Description: The exploration of the processes accompanying engine combustion demands quick-responding pressure-recording instruments, among which the piezoelectric type has found widespread use because of its especially propitious properties as vibration-recording instruments for high frequencies. Lacking appropriate test methods, the potential errors of piezoelectric recorders in dynamic measurements could only be estimated up to now. In the present report a test method is described by means of which the resonance curves of the piezoelectric pickup can be determined; hence an instrumental appraisal of the vibration characteristics of piezoelectric recorders is obtainable.

    Description: In an attempt to follow the time rate of change of the processes in turbulent flows by quantitative measurements the measurement of the pressure is often beset with insuperable difficulties for the reason that the speeds and hence the pressures to be measured are often very small. On the other hand, the measurement of very small pressures requires, at least, considerable time, so that the follow-up of periodically varying processes is as goad as impossible. In order to obviate these difficulties a method, suggested by Prof. Prandtl, has been developed by which the pressure distribution is simply determined from the photographic flow picture. This method is described and proved on a worked-out example. It was found that quantitatively very satisfactory results can be achieved.

    Description: A method for recording the local heat-transfer coefficients on bodies in flow was developed. The cylinder surface was kept at constant temperature by the condensation of vapor except for a narrow strip which is heated separately to the same temperature by electricity. The heat-transfer coefficient at each point was determined from the electric heat output and the temperature increase. The distribution of the heat transfer along the circumference of cylinders was recorded over a range of Reynolds numbers of from 5000 to 426,000. The pressure distribution was measured at the same time. At Reynolds numbers up to around 100,000 high maximums of the heat transfer occurred in the forward stagnation point at and on the rear side at 180C, while at around 80 the heat-transfer coefficient on both sides of the cylinder behind the forward stagnation point manifested distinct minimums. Two other maximums occurred at around 115 C behind the forward stagnation point between 170,000 and 426,000. At 426,000 the heat transfer at the location of those maximums was almost twice as great as in the forward stagnation point, and the rear half of the cylinder diffused about 60 percent of the entire heat, The tests are compared with the results of other experimental and theoretical investigations.

    Description: Chemical reactions can demonstrably occur in a fuel-air mixture compressed in the working cylinder of an Otto-cycle (spark ignition) internal-combustion engine even before the charge is ignited by the flame proceeding from the sparking plug. These are the so-called "prelinminary reactions" ("pre-flame" combustion or oxidation), and an exact knowledge of their characteristic development is of great importance for a correct appreciation of the phenomena of engine-knock (detonation), and consequently for its avoidance. Such reactions can be studied either in a working engine cylinder or in a combustion bomb. The first method necessitates a complicated experimental technique, while the second has the disadvantage of enabling only a single reaction to be studied at one time. Consequently, a new series of experiments was inaugurated, conducted in a motored (externally-driven) experimental engine of mixture-compression type, without ignition, the resulting preliminary reactions being detectable and measurable thermometrically.

    Description: The heat transfer in the laminar boundary layer of a heated plate in flow at high speed can be obtained by integration of the conventional differential equations of the boundary layer, so long as the material values can be regarded as constant. This premise is fairly well satisfied at speeds up to about twice the sonic speed and at not excessive temperature rise of the heated plate. The general solution of the equation includes Pohlhausen's specific cases of heat transfer to a plate at low speeds and of the plate thermometer. The solution shows that the heat transfer coefficient at high speed must be computed with the same equation as at low speed, when it is referred to the difference of the wall temperature of the heated plate in respect to its "natural temperature." Since this fact follows from the linear structure of the differential equation describing the temperature field, it is equally applicable to the heat transfer in the turbulent boundary layer.

    Description: A study of available data from various tests of beveled control surfaces has been made in an attempt to develop a rational method for predicting the effects of beveled trailing edges on the hinge-moment characteristics of control surfaces in both two- and three-dimensional flow. The results of the study indicated that the change in the included angle at the control-surface trailing edge formed a convenient basis on which a correlation could be made of the effects of various profile modifications on hinge-moment characteristics. It is believed that the formulas developed will allow reasonably accurate predictions of the hinge-moment characteristics of sealed beveled control surfaces if the characteristics of the original control surfaces are known. The presence of a gap at the control-surface hinge increased the effect of beveled trailing edges on the hinge-moment characteristics at small control-surface deflections but the available data were insufficient to allow as complete a correlation as was possible for sealed controls.

    Description: As part of a general investigation in the NACA 19-foot pressure tunnel to determine stall characteristics and effectiveness of high-lift devices on wings of various sections, tests were made of a tapered. wing having NACA 44R-series airfoil sections. Lift, drag, pitching-moment, and stall characteristics were determined at a Reynolds number of 4,850,000 for the plain wing and for the wing with partial-and with full-span split flaps. The stall progressed slowly over The plain wing; a gradual loss of lift for angles of attack up to and beyond that for the maximum lift coefficient resulted. As Compared with the stall of the plain wing, the initial stall of the wing with either partial-span or full-span flaps deflected occurred at a higher angle of attack and the stall progressed much more rapidly. The maximum lift coefficients at a Reynolds number of 4,850,000 were 1.35 for the plain wing, 2.25 for the wing with partial-span flaps at 60 deg, and 2.67 for the wing with full-span flaps at 60 deg. The positions of the aerodynamic center, in terms of mean chords back of the leading edge of the root section, were approximately 0.458 with no flaps, 0.483 with partial-span flaps at 60 deg, and 0.498 with full-span flaps at 60 deg.

    Description: Preliminary data are presented on the variation of the maximum lift coefficient with Mach number. The data were obtained from tests in the 8-foot high-speed tunnel of three NACA 16-series airfoils of 1-foot chord. Measurements consisted primarily of pressure-distribution measurements in order to illustrate the nature of the phenomena. It was found that the maximum lift coefficient of airfoils is markedly affected by compressibility even at Mach numbers as low as 0.2. At high Mach numbers pronounced decrease of the maximum lift coefficient was found. The magnitude of the effects of compressibility on the maximum lift coefficient and the low speeds at which these effects first appear indicate clearly that consideration of the take-off thrust for propellers will give results seriously in error if these considerations are based on the usual low-speed maximum-lift-coefficient data generally used.

    Description: An investigation has been made to determine the motions of and the flight paths describe by a Navy dive-bombing airplane in simulated diving attacks. The data necessary to evaluate these items, with the exception of the atmospheric wind data, were obtained from automatic recording instruments installed entirely within the airplane. The atmospheric wind data were obtained from the ground by the balloon-theodolite method. The results of typical dives at various dive angles are presented in the form of time histories of the motion of the airplane as well as flight paths calculated with respect to still air and with respect to the ground.

    Description: A method that utilizes the Doppler effect on radio signals for determining the speed of an airplane and the distance traveled by the airplane has been developed and found to operate satisfactorily. In this method, called the NACA radio ground-speed system, standard readily available radio equipment is used almost exclusively and extreme frequency stability of the transmitters is not necessary. No complicated equipment need be carried in the airplane, as the standard radio transmitter is usually adequate. Actual flight tests were made in which the method was used and the results were consistent with calibrated air speed indications and stop-watch measurements. Inasmuch as the fundamental accuracy of the radio method is far better than either of the checking systems used, no check was made on the limitations of the accuracy.

    Description: The development of the laminar boundary layer in a compressible fluid is considered. Formulas are given for determining the boundary-layer thickness and the ratio of the boundary-layer Reynolds number to the body Reynolds number for airfoils and bodies of revolution. It i s shown that the effect of compressibility will profoundly alter the Reynolds number corresponding to the upper limit of the range of the low-drag coefficients . The available data indicate that for low-drag and high critical compressibility speed airfoils and bodies of revolution, this effect is favorable.

    Description: Hinge-moment parameters for several typical ailerons were calculated from section data with the aspect-ratio correction as usually determined from lifting-line theory. The calculations showed that the agreement between experimental and calculated results was unsatisfactory. An additional aspect-ratio correction, calculated by the method of lifting-surface theory, was applied to the slope of the curve of hinge-moment coefficient against angle of attack at small angles of attack. This so-called streamline-curvature correction brought the calculated and experimental results into satisfactory agreement.

    Description: For computing the critical flutter velocity of a wing among the data required are the position of the line of centers of gravity of the wing sections along the span and the mass moments and radii of inertia of any section of the wing about the axis passing through the center of gravity of the section. A sufficiently detailed computation of these magnitudes even if the weights of all the wing elements are known, requires a great deal of time expenditure. Thus a rapid competent worker would require from 70 to 100 hours for the preceding computations for one wing only, while hundreds of hours would be required if all the weights were included. With the aid of the formulas derived in the present paper, the preceding work can be performed with a degree of accuracy sufficient for practical purposes in from one to two hours, the only required data being the geometric dimensions of the outer wing (tapered part), the position of its longerons, the total weight of the outer wing, and the approximate weight of the longerons, The entire material presented in this paper is applicable mainly to wings of longeron construction of the CAHI type and investigations are therefore being conducted by CAHI for the derivation of formulas for the determination of the preceding data for wings of other types.

    Description: The few available test data on the heat dissipation of wholly or partly heated airfoil models are compared with the corresponding data for the flat plate as obtained by an extension of Prandtl's momentum theory, with differentiation between laminar and turbulent boundary layer and transitional region between both, the extent and appearance of which depend upon certain critical factors. The satisfactory agreement obtained justifies far-reaching conclusions in respect to other profile forms and arrangements of heated surface areas. The temperature relationship of the material quantities in its effect on the heat dissipation is discussed as far as is possible at tk.e present state of research, and it is shown that the profile drag of heated wing surfaces can increase or decrease with the temperature increase depending upon the momentarily existent structure of the boundary layer.

    Description: In the present paper an investigation is made of two stages of a multistage turboblower having a vaneless diffuser behind the impeller and guide vanes at the inlet to the nest stage. The method employed was that of investigating the performance of the successive elements of the blower (the impeller, vaneless diffuser, ets.) whereby the kinematics of the flow through the blower could be followed and the pressure at the different points computed. The character of the flow and the physical significance of the loss coefficients could thereby be determined so as to secure the best agreement of the computed with the actual performance of the blower. Since the tests were carried out for various delivery volumes, the dependence of the coefficients on a number of factors (angle of attack, velocities, etc.) could be obtained. The distribution of the losses that occur during the transformation of dynamic pressure at the impeller exit into static pressure could be found and likewise the range within which the friction coefficient varies in the vaneless diffuser. With the aid of factors having a certain physical significance, the centrifugal blower could be computed on the basis of a more or less schematical consideration of the phenomena occuring during the air flow through it, and the use of arbitrary factors and recourse to the geometrical similtude law thus avoided. The present investigation largely summarizes all the previous work af the CHI Blower Section on the different elements of a centrifugal blower. Some considerations on the analysis of model test data for application to full-scale are presented in the appendix.

    Description: Strength tests were made of a number of 24S-T and Alclad 75S-T aluminum-alloy shear webs to determine the effect of rivet or bolt holes on the shear strength. Data were obtained for webs which approached a condition of pure shear stress as well as for webs with well-developed diagonal tension. The rivet factor, (pitch minus diameter) divided by pitch, was varied from approximately 0.81 to 0.62. These tests indicated that the shear stresses on the gross section were nearly constant for all values of the rivet factor investigated if the other properties of the web were not changed.

    Description: In the present report an investigation is made on a flat plate in a two-dimensional compressible flow of the effect of compressibility and heating on the turbulent frictional drag coefficient in the boundary layer of an airfoil or wing radiator. The analysis is based on the Prandtl-Karman theory of the turbulent boundary later and the Stodola-Crocco, theorem on the linear relation between the total energy of the flow and its velocity. Formulas are obtained for the velocity distribution and the frictional drag law in a turbulent boundary later with the compressibility effect and heat transfer taken into account. It is found that with increase of compressibility and temperature at full retardation of the flow (the temperature when the velocity of the flow at a given point is reduced to zero in case of an adiabatic process in the gas) at a constant R (sub x), the frictional drag coefficient C (sub f) decreased, both of these factors acting in the same sense.

    Description: The usefulness of the knock ratings of pure hydrocarbon compounds would be increased if some reliable method of calculating the knock ratings of fuel blends was known.
