    Notes: Abstract A crucial step in global optimization algorithms based on random sampling in the search domain is decision about the achievement of a prescribed accuracy. In order to overcome the difficulties related to such a decision, the Bayesian Nonparametric Approach has been introduced. The aim of this paper is to show the effectiveness of the approach when an ad hoc clustering technique is used for obtaining promising starting points for a local search algorithm. Several test problems are considered.

    Notes: Summary Research into strata control has been pursued at Cerchar for the last 20 years, and has led to the definition of rules for the siting of new mine workings. These rules are drawn up as a function of the ‘volume of influence’ which is exerted by existing workings. To facilitate their application by the coal producer, a computer-aided design system for steep-seam faces has been developed on a minicomputer. The main features of the interactions which occur within the volume of influence of such faces are restated and the system which has been developed for design is described, with particular emphasis on the design stages which involved graphic systems and data base management.

    Notes: Summary Sources of error are investigated for a two-dimensional finite difference computer program designed to model strata deformation. The program calculates the displacements of a mesh of ‘mass points’, by the iterative solution of equations of equilibrium for the stresses acting on each mass point. The effect of errors on both displacement estimates and stress estimates is considered. Round-off errors are discussed analytically, while the effect of choosing too coarse a mesh density is demonstrated by comparison of two runs of the program with identical material properties, but different mesh densities. The influence of boundary conditions and the result of incomplete relaxation of the finite difference equations is estimated by comparison with Kirsch's analytical solution for a thin plate of finite width with a circular hole under unidimensional load. As a result of the analysis, estimators for stresses and displacements are derived, which make allowance for some of the sources of error; suitable boundary conditions for first and subsequent runs of the program are proposed; and a convergence criterion for the iterative process is suggested. These results are then applied to simulations of mining situations, together with various refinements of the basic model, such as separation and ‘slip’ between adjacent strata, and an allowance for failure of material.

    Notes: Summary A two-dimensional finite difference computer program, with the facility to represent stratified material by means of a mesh of ‘mass points’ with different material properties in each square of the mesh, is adapted to run on a mesh whose material properties are selected stochastically from a specified distribution. The program uses an iterative method to solve the equations of equilibrium, giving estimates of displacements and stresses. Lattices of normally distributed (zero mean, unit variance) random values are produced: lattices of statistically independent values and lattices whose values are spatially correlated, to give the effect of gradual variations resulting in regions of positive values and regions of negative values. These lattices are used to generate the material properties: Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio and density. Each property has a specified mean and standard deviation for each material in the model, and the precise values for each mass point are calculated from the relevant lattices. A simple model with a square opening is used to investigate the effect of this stochastic generation of material properties, by comparison of stresses and displacements near the opening for runs of the program with (1) deterministic and (2) stochastic properties. Similar lattices of random values are used to introduce a stochastic element in the criterion for failure of materials. This is applied to a more realistic simulation of a mining situation, where Mohr's Criterion is used, with a stochastic component, to determine whether failure has occurred at each point of the mesh.

    Notes: Abstract An algorithm to classify data points on the sphere in distinct cluster groups is defined. The characteristics of the cluster groups and the rule for assigning data to the groups are related to a continuous differentiable density estimation. The modes of the estimated density are assumed to be representative of the groups; data points are then assigned to the mode reached by the steepest ascent. The major advantage of this procedure is its sensitivity in detecting cluster groups independently of their geometry and configuration. As a consequence, the procedure is capable of handling orientation data that may be arranged in girdles.

    Notes: Abstract One objective of the aerial radiometric surveys flown as part of the U.S. Department of Energy's National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) program was to ascertain the spatial distribution of near-surface radioelement abundances on a regional scale. Some method for identifying groups of observations with similar γ-ray spectral signatures and radioelement concentration values was therefore required. It is shown in this paper that cluster analysis can identify such groups with or without a priori knowledge of the geology of an area. An approach that combines principal components analysis with convergentk-means cluster analysis is used to classify 6991 observations (each observation comprising three radiometric variables) from the Precambrian rocks of the Copper Mountain, Wyoming area. This method is compared with a convergentk-means analysis that utilizes available geologic knowledge. Both methods identify four clusters. Three of the clusters represent background values for the Precambrian rocks of the area, and the fourth represents outliers (anomalously high214Bi). A segmentation of the data corresponding to “geologic reality” as interpreted by other methods has been achieved by perceptive quantitative analysis of aerial radiometric data. The techniques employed are composites of classical clustering methods designed to handle the special problems presented by large data sets.

    Notes: Abstract Cluster analysis groups samples, but does not generally show gradations between clusters. To illustrate these relationships, principal-coordinate analysis and multidimensional scaling can be employed, but these methods may not be appropriate due to structural distortion. A minimum spanning tree (MST) computes a point-to-point path through the original matrix, and clusters are mapped on the MST diagram. The MST linkages, therefore, provide a natural continuum between the clusters, without distortion. Forty-six Silurian Tonoloway Limestone samples were analyzed for 16 sedimentary features indicative of subaerial exposure. Cluster analysis identified nine clusters which were reduced to five final, ordered groups by MST.

    Notes: Abstract To evaluate the provenance of glacial till, the trace element content of magnetite was used. Magnetite was present in all known rock types and all till samples in the area investigated. By using fuzzy-set theory it was possible to group samples of magnetite taken from bedrock into relatively homogeneous and geologically meaningful groups and also, by fuzzy classification, to relate the till samples to the rocks in such a way that the relative contribution of each rock type to the till is estimated. Each rock and till sample is assigned a membership value between 0 and 1 for each rock type. The membership values, for a certain rock type in the till, are then interpolated by kriging onto maps. Magnetites from skarns associated with sulfide ores especially are rather distinct, and so a map of such membership values for till unveils all known ore deposits some 1–5 km “downstream”in the general direction of the ice flow. Other anomalies show up which cannot be related to hitherto known ores or mineralizations.
