Description / Table of Contents: Summary The fortunate circumstance that the world of ancient Mesopotamia from the third up to the first millenium b. C. has preserved not only proofs of plastic art and reliefs, but also thousands of seal pictures, which often show animals, enables us to study the fauna of the ancient Orient much better than that of many other periods and territories. Especially about 2800, 2300, and 1300 b. C. people were very diligent with animal portraits, and naturally they chose in the first place to illustrate chase or chaseable animals. Starting with the lion the bear, wild oxen, wild sheep and goat, the oriental kinds of antelopes and stags up to the ostrich and the wild boar we find here almost complete documentary evidence of the animals to be hunted, which will be continued once more in the later Assyrian reliefs — here not treated. These testimonies are the more valuable because they are generally very animated and prove a surprising capacity of observation of these creatures.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Average logarithmic profiles of velocity as a function of the velocity on the surface of the Rhine are deduced and also values of the roughness length and the friction velocity («Schubspannungsgeschwindigkeit»). From that the flow of the Rhine can be considered as a turbulent flow over a rough ground. The differences between the different sets of measurements and the average profile of velocity are discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Taking into account some recent results showing that the observations carried out with Worden gravimeters are influenced by temperature, a method of calibration has been followed which aims to neutralize both the effect of drift and to affort complete symmetry to every value observed.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Basing himself on the principle that a system of observations of different precision may be reduced to a system of observations of the same precision, the Author proposes a new formula for a valuation of the standard error of the weight unit. Such formula is not nullified in case of measurements which, though of different weights, are equal. — In the second part the Author puts forward the hypothesis that a geometric aspect of the compensation of different kinds of measures, is of transforming a figure, wich satisfies given conditions, into another by the least deformation. He believes that such least deformation may be obtained without making a linear combination of linear and angular squared errors.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary In connection with my last paper (7) the interpretation of seismic travel-time surfaces ψ(r) for refracted rays is given under the assumption that ψ(r) is a power serie with a finite number of terms. With the results two typical examples are treated. Finally theHerglotz solution is given in a new form.

Notes: Summary The reflection segments determined by computations based on the method of images, as is well known, are lying to high for greater dips (not taking into account refraktion effects). For the case of the top layers being horizontal, the true dip of a deeper reflection segment is determined and subsequently a graphical method given enabling quick locating of the true position. For the case that, from a certain depth downward, the velocity will be constant, the angular correction can be read from a nomogram. Finally, the question is discussed when corrections will be allowed to be neglected.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The continuous measurements of ozone concentration near ground level when compared with the daily values of total atmospheric ozone did not show any correlation what so ever. The quantity of ozone near the ground, however seems to have a negative correlation with the number of cases of temperature inversion in the lower atmosphere. The annual variations in the two cases are comparable but the ground level ozone shows another minimum in the month of june when the air at the recording station usually comes from Paris and so, is strongly polluted.

Notes: Summary Numerical results are given which show the way in which thc Curie temperature moves inwards from the margin during the cooling of a thick intrusive sheet. The time taken to move from the margin to the centre varies as the square of the thickness of the sheet, being about 6500 years for a sheet 1000 m thick on reasonable assumptions as to the thermal properties of the material. This implies that the secular variation of the Earth's magnetic field over periods of time of 1000 years or more may be studied by measuring the directions of magnetisation at a series of points across the thickness of such a sheet. Some measurements on a Tasmanian sill about 430 m thick of Jurassic or Cretaceous age suggest a change from maximum to minimum inclination in a time of about 200 years. Since the margins of the sill are not available this figure may be considerably in error but the results suggest the general practicability of the method.
