Notizen: Abstract The aim of this paper is to point out some of the abilities of Distributed Artificial Intelligence in the domain of scheduling, control and design support of Flexible Manufacturing Systems. A distributed management system is proposed, based on Distributed Problem Solving, sub-field of Distributed Artificial Intelligence. The basic concepts are the concept of Resource Management Entity to ensure local optimization of the management of resources and the concept of cooperation to provide ability for global and local consistency. The management of resources is associated to activities such as scheduling, control or simulation. It is shown that this system computes not only practicable schedulings, but also presents, on the one hand, some abilities in supporting the design and the robust optimization of Flexible Manufacturing Systems, and, on the other hand, some abilities in supporting real-time control of such systems. This enables, in future works, to design a Distributed Decision Support System for integrated scheduling, control and design support of production systems.

Notizen: Abstract Organizational change has been a key component in enhancing performance and organizational design. Previous process-oriented organizational change methods, however, focused on simplifying process flow without examining how it affects other organizational elements. Since an organization consists of several interdependent elements, a change within an organization can affect the other dependent organizational elements. Lack of coordination within an organization can result in unexpected poor performance and high coordination cost. In this research, we suggest a coordination theory approach to organizational process change by applying the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Process Handbook with simulation technique. For the validity test, we applied the Process Handbook to a real hospital. From the application case, we saw that the proposed approach is useful in minimizing the risk of the change project by validating change alternatives using simulation technique, coordinating the dependent organizational elements, and managing change effects on other organizational elements. In this article, we discuss the proposed method and the transformation of a new organizational design to the workflow system development.

Notizen: Abstract Based on an investigation of the Small Scale Steady State (S4) test, an integrated computational/ experimental approach has been developed in order to assess the fracture behaviour of polyethylene (PE) gas distribution pipe material during rapid crack propagation (RCP). This paper describes the use of the results obtained from the S4 test and program modified from PFRAC (Pipeline Fracture Analysis Code) to evaluate the fracture toughness of the material, G d, which could not be directly obtained from the test, and to predict critical pressure, p c, for RCP in a full scale PE pipe. The contact algorithms are developed to consider the opening pipe wall impact against a series of containment rings and the capabilities of PFRAC are also extended. Since G d is evaluated, the investigations are made on it to the effect of temperature and wall thickness. In addition, procedures to evaluate the critical pressure for the S4 test pipe are also discussed.

Notizen: Abstract The detailed study of photoluminescence excitation (PLE) spectra in thick porous silicon (PS) layers is carried out using modified experimental technique. Instead of monochromatic detection usually used, a PLE signal is recorded over the whole emission band from a PS layer. For the first time, this technique allowed us to obtain the reliable PLE data up to far UV range of excitation energy Eexc = 5.4 eV. The PLE spectra showed increasing region below the maximum at Eexc ≈ 4.3 eV, then PLE intensity decreased monotonically. The absorption spectrum for PS layers is extracted from the same PLE data using depth profiling method. Low-energy region of the PLE spectra is satisfactorily simulated in terms of quantum confinement model assuming a constant quantum efficiency and log-normal size distribution of silicon nanocrystallites. The PLE decrease above Eexc ≈ 4.3 eV is discussed assuming that hot electrons may be injected from silicon crystallites to adjacent oxide phase in PS. In this way, leaving electrons give rise to nonradiative losses.

Notizen: Abstract A fast Fourier transform (FFT) moving average (FFT-MA) method for generating Gaussian stochastic processes is derived. Using discrete Fourier transforms makes the calculations easy and fast so that large random fields can be produced. On the other hand, the basic moving average frame allows us to uncouple the random numbers from the structural parameters (mean, variance, correlation length, ... ), but also to draw the randomness components in spatial domain. Such features impart great flexibility to the FFT-MA generator. For instance, changing only the random numbers gives distinct realizations all having the same covariance function. Similarly, several realizations can be built from the same random number set, but from different structural parameters. Integrating the FFT-MA generator into an optimization procedure provides a tool theoretically capable to determine the random numbers identifying the Gaussian field as well as the structural parameters from dynamic data. Moreover, all or only some of the random numbers can be perturbed so that realizations produced using the FFT-MA generator can be locally updated through an optimization process.

Notizen: Abstract Fundamentals of autorun analysis have been given to describe porous media geometry, including sedimantary rocks. The mathematical abstraction of porous media has been presented on the basis of random fields. Classical parameters of porous media, such as porosity and specific surface, have been expressed in terms of autorun function. Finally, a stochastic model has been proposed for the underlying generating mechanism of the porous medium. This model is capable of producing synthetic porous medium and, on the average, porosity as well as the specific surface. The first autorun coefficient is asymptotically equal to the porosity of the medium concerned. It also has been observed that the porosity together with the autorun function are sufficient to produce the specific surface value of the medium.

Notizen: Abstract This paper describes a model for the penetration of fluid into a moving paper web in the application nip of a film coater. One-dimensional and two-dimensional solution methods are developed and compared. The two-dimensional model is solved using a Galerkin finite element method with a free surface algorithm. The depth of fluid penetration into the paper web increases with increase in applied pressure, paper permeability and exposure time. The fluid penetration depth decreases as the porosity or solution viscosity increases. The functional relationship among these variables depends on the profile of the pressure applied at the surface of the paper sheet. For the case of uniform paper permeability and no air compression in the web, the two-dimensional model gives similar results to the one-dimensional model.

Notizen: Abstract Integrated flow modeling is the combination of a traditional flow simulator with a petrophysical model. By combining a petrophysical model with a traditional flow model, it is possible to perform calculations that improve our ability to monitor fluid movement in porous media. This paper outlines the formulation of an integrated flow model IFLO and its multi-variable, Newton–Raphson IMPES solution procedure. The benefits of integrated flow modeling and the underlying principles involved in the integration of a flow model with a petrophysical model are presented. Results from the IFLO model are used to illustrate the principles.

Notizen: Abstract An important factor in the rock quality assessment analysis from discontinuity measurements along a scanline is the correlation of intact lengths. The autorun model and first order autorun coefficient are proposed as a method for objectively quantifying intact length correlation structure and discontinuity occurrences along any scanline. Necessary definitions for the methodology are presented on a quantitative basis such as the alternative intact length percentages and experimental autorun coefficient. An expression is proposed for the number of discontinuity occurrences along a scanline depending on the scanline length, alternate intact length percentages, and the autorun coefficient. Monte Carlo simulation technique is used with a suitable autorun model to verify this expression. A mathematical expression is derived for the expected Rock Quality Designation (RQD) value by taking into account the correlation of the intact lengths. Additional simulations show the validity of the new RQD expression. With the methodology proposed much less engineering experience and judgment are required in estimating the RQD value from scanline measurements. The application of the methodology has been presented for some field data.

Notizen: Abstract This paper presents a new method of constructing random functions whose realizations can be evaluated efficiently. The basic idea is to “blend,” both stochastically and linearly, a limited set of independent initial realizations previously generated by any chosen simulation method. The blending stochastic coefficients are determined in such a way that the new random function so generated has the same mean and covariance functions as the random function used for generating the initial realizations.
