Notizen: Summary This paper is concerned with multilevel techniques for preconditioning linear systems arising from Galerkin methods for elliptic boundary value problems. A general estimate is derived which is based on the characterization of Besov spaces in terms of weighted sequence norms related to corresponding multilevel expansions. The result brings out clearly how the various ingredients of a typical multilevel setting affect the growth rate of the condition numbers. In particular, our analysis indicates how to realize even uniformly bounded condition numbers. For example, the general results are used to show that the Bramble-Pasciak-Xu preconditioner for piecewise linear finite elements gives rise to uniformly bounded condition numbers even when the refinements of the underlying triangulations are highly nonuniform. Furthermore, they are applied to a general multivariate setting of refinable shift-invariant spaces, in particular, covering those induced by various types of wavelets.

Notizen: Summary We prove convergence and error estimates in Sobolev spaces for the collocation method with tensor product splines for strongly elliptic pseudodifferential equations on the torus. Examples of applications include elliptic partial differential equations with periodic boundary conditions but also the classical boundary integral operators of potential theory on torus-shaped domains in three or more dimensions. For odd-degree splines, we prove convergence of nodal collocation for any strongly elliptic operator. For even-degree splines and midpoint collocation, we find an additional condition for the convergence which is satisfied for the classical boundary integral operators. Our analysis is a generalization to higher dimensions of the corresponding analysis of Arnold and Wendland [4].

Notizen: Abstract We obtain estimates of approximation numbers of integral operators, with the kernels belonging to Sobolev classes or classes of functions with bounded mixed derivatives. Along with the estimates of approximation numbers, we also obtain estimates of best bilinear approximation of such kernels.

Notizen: Abstract We establish a result related to a theorem of de Boor and Jia [1]. Their theorem, in turn, corrected and extended a result of Fix and Strang [5] concerning controlled approximation. In our result, the approximating functions are not required to have compact support, but satisfy instead conditions on their behavior at ∞. Our theorem includes some recent results of Jackson [6] and is closely related to the work of Buhmann [2].

Notizen: Abstract In the table of multivariate rational interpolants the entries are arranged such that the row index indicates the number of numerator coefficients and the column index the number of denominator coefficients. If the homogeneous system of linear equations defining the denominator coefficients has maximal rank, then the rational interpolant can be represented as a quotient of determinants. If this system has a rank deficiency, then we identify the rational interpolant with another element from the table using less interpolation conditions for its computation and we describe the effect this dependence of interpolation conditions has on the structure of the table of multivariate rational interpolants. In the univariate case the table of solutions to the rational interpolation problem is composed of triangles of so-called minimal solutions, having minimal degree in numerator and denominator and using a minimal number of interpolation conditions to determine the solution.

    Notizen: Abstract Let $$I_W f(x) = \sum\limits_{k_1 = - \infty }^\infty \cdots \sum\limits_{k_n = - \infty }^\infty {f\left( {\frac{{2\pi k}}{{2W + 1}}} \right)\prod\limits_{i = 1}^n {\frac{{\sin \left( {\frac{{2W + 1}}{2}x_i - k_i \pi } \right)}}{{\left( {\frac{{2W + 1}}{2}x_i - k_i \pi } \right)}}} }$$ be Whittaker's cardinal series of the functionf. It turns out that the sets of functions with $$\left\| {\left. {\left( {\sum\limits_{W = 1}^\infty {W^{sq} \left| {f(x) - I_W f(x)} \right|^q } } \right)^{{1 \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {1 q}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} q}} } \right|L_p } \right\|〈 \infty$$ or with $$\left( {\sum\limits_{W = 1}^\infty {W^{sq} \left\| {f - I_W f\left| {L_p } \right.} \right\|^q } } \right)^{{1 \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {1 q}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} q}}〈 \infty$$ can be completely described in terms of Besov-Triebel-Lizorkin spaces onR n.

Notizen: Abstract Motivated by the problem of multivariate scattered data interpolation, much interest has centered on interpolation by functions of the form $$f(x) = \sum\limits_{j = 1}^N {a_j g(\parallel x - x_j \parallel ),x \in R^s }$$ whereg:R + →R is some prescribed function. For a wide range of functionsg, it is known that the interpolation matricesA=g(∥x i −x j ∥) i,j=1 N are invertible for given distinct data pointsx 1,x 2,...,x N. More recently, progress has been made in quantifying these interpolation methods, in the sense of estimating the (l 2) norms of the inverses of these interpolation matrices as well as their condition numbers. In particular, given a suitable functiong:R + →R, and data inR s having minimal separationq, there exists a functionh s:R + →R +, which depends only ong ands, and a constantC s , which depends only ons, such that the inverse of the associated interpolation matrixA satisfies the estimate ‖A −1‖≤C s h s (q). The present paper seeks “converse” results to the inequality given above. That is, given a suitable functiong, a spatial dimensions, and a parameterq〉0 (which is usually assumed to be small), it is shown that there exists a data set inR s having minimal separationq, a constant $$\tilde C_s$$ depending only ons, and a functionk s (q), such that the inverse of the interpolation matrixA associated with this data set satisfies $$\parallel A^{ - 1} \parallel \geqslant \tilde C_s k_s (q)$$ . In some cases, it is seen thath s(q)=k s (q), so the bounds are optimal up to constants. In certain others,k s (q) is less thanh s (q), but nevertheless exhibits a behavior comparable to that ofh s (q). That is, even in these cases, the bounds are close to being optimal.

Notizen: Abstract The approximation order provided by a directed set {S h } h〉0 of spaces, each spanned by thehZ d -translates of one function, is analyzed. The “nearoptimal” approximants of [R2] from eachs h to the exponential functions are used to establish upper bounds on the approximation order. These approximants are also used on the Fourier transform domain to yield approximations for other smooth functions, and thereby provide lower bounds on the approximation order. As a special case, the classical Strang-Fix conditions are extended to bounded summable generating functions. The second part of the paper consists of a detailed account of various applications of these general results to spline and radial function theory. Emphasis is given to the case when the scale {s h } is obtained froms 1 by means other than dilation. This includes the derivation of spectral approximation orders associated with smooth positive definite generating functions.

Notizen: Abstract This is the second part of a note on interpolation by real polynomials of several real variables. For certain regular knot systems (geometric or regular meshes, tensor product grids), Neville-Aitken algorithms are derived explicitly. By application of a projectivity they can be extended in a simple way to arbitrary (k+1)-pencil lattices as recently introduced by Lee and Phillips. A numerical example is given.

Notizen: Abstract The concepts of Vandermonde determinant and confluent Vandermonde determinant are extended to the multidimensional setting by relating them to multivariate interpolation problems. With an approach different from that of other recent papers on this subject, the values of these determinants are computed, recovering and extending the results of those papers.
