    Description: Smart materials and structures are capable of active or passive changes in terms of shapes, properties, and mechanical or electromagnetic responses in reaction to an external stimulus, such as light, temperature, stress, moisture, pH, and electric or magnetic fields. They have attracted increasing interest for their enhanced performance and efficiency over a wide range of industrial applications, especially for aerospace. These require novel engineering approaches and design philosophies in order to integrate the actions of sensors, actuators, and control circuit elements into a single system that can respond adaptively to its surroundings. This reprint has collected cutting-edge research and recent advances in smart materials and structures, including seven original research papers and three review articles, co-authored by 65 scientists and engineers from 18 institutions and 3 industries. The research topics mainly cover advanced materials, applications of smart materials and structures, as well as recent development in sensing techniques. We hope this reprint will contribute to disseminating the latest progress in smart materials and structures, as well as stimulate the interest of its audience to work in this important and vibrant area to promote and benefit the multidisciplinary scientific communities.

    Description: Land degradation, exacerbated by climate change and rapid urbanization, poses significant threats to socio-economic development. There is an urgent need to explore land degradation and its associated ecosystem responses and the suitable pathways for sustainable development in urban and rural regions. This reprint comprises a collection of 16 articles, featuring 1 review article and 15 research articles. There are some key practical experiences and scientific findings to support the ecosystem change response to land degradation, through either theoretical works or empirical research, identifying the characteristics and solutions for sustainable development. Key scientific issues addressed include land use and land cover change, ecological impacts of urbanization, mechanisms of land degradation on ecosystems, and coordinated social, economic, and ecological development. This reprint encouraged scholars to share the latest advancements in the research framework, datasets, methods, and case studies for assessing land degradation and associated ecosystem responses. We expect this reprint will inspire broader reflection and discussion within academic community regarding the theories and practices concerning land degradation and associated ecosystem responses. It could be a valuable reference for exploring potential solutions towards achieving land degradation neutrality and promoting regional sustainable development.

    Description: The integration of information technologies with industry has marked the beginning of the fourth industrial revolution and promoted the development of industrial engineering. However, the depletion of resources and industrial waste caused by increasing amounts of industrial production pose a huge threat to nature. The application of sustainable supply chains in industrial engineering and management is one of the ways to balance the economy, society and environment. Therefore, it is a key concern for us to explore the construction of sustainable supply chains in industrial engineering and management. Moreover, to understand the impact of low-carbon, sustainable and recycled supply chains on industrial engineering, we need more in-depth investigations.This Special Issue aims to solicit original research and review articles discussing sustainable supply chain decision-making in industrial engineering and management to improve the sustainability of enterprise operations.     Description: Implementing sustainable development is central to achieving global reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating anthropogenic environmental impacts. As defined by the UN 2030 Agenda and its associated Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), sustainable development requires a holistic, interdisciplinary approach, which is not without its challenges. Indeed, studies tracking global progress toward meeting the 2030 SDG targets emphasize the importance of implementing sustainable solutions, with several SDG targets described as 'off track.' Therefore, there is an urgent need to address the challenges of an interdisciplinary, unified, and practical approach to sustainable implementation. In this context, this Reprint brings together 15 selected papers presented during the 2022 SDEWES Conference.     Description: Autonomous vehicles are increasingly prevalent, navigating both structured urban roads and challenging offroad scenes. At the core of these vehicles lie the planning and control modules, which are crucial for demonstrating the intelligence inherent in an autonomous driving system. The planning module is responsible for devising an open-loop trajectory, taking into account a variety of environmental restrictions, task-related demands, and vehicle-kinematics-related constraints, while the control module ensures adherence to this trajectory in a closed-loop manner. This adherence is vital in a range of conditions, including diverse weather scenarios, different driving situations, and in response to potential disturbances such as mechanical failures or cyber threats. In certain contexts, these modules are collectively referred to as 'control', with the planning component considered an open-loop controller. This Special Issue focuses on the latest research trends in planning and control methods for autonomous driving. It comprises 11 papers that cover a broad spectrum of applications, including occlusion-aware motion planning in warehouses, control strategies for articulated vehicles, cooperative trajectory planning for autonomous forklifts, and tracking control for underwater vehicles in the face of disturbances and uncertainties.     Description: Three-dimensional printing is among the emerging technologies of our time. While it was previously primarily employed for rapid prototyping, this technology has entered a phase of accelerated production, especially for complicated or small objects. Most recently, novel 3D printing technologies have enabled objects with features at the micro- or even nano-scale to be fabricated. Meanwhile, well-known problems such as the waviness of fused deposition modeling (FDM)-printed parts, the missing long-term stability of some typical printing materials or the reduced mechanical properties of 3D-printed objects persist.This Special Issue focusses on all topics related to the 3D printing of micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS), such as novel or advanced features enabled by 3D printing compared to conventional technologies, but also the challenges that continue to exist regarding the application of 3D printing technologies for MEMS and new approaches to overcoming them.

    Description: A high demand for metals (cobalt, copper, gold, lithium, nickel, tin, vanadium, etc.) has been recorded for the past several decades, and this demand is expected to increase even further in the coming decades as the world moves to low-carbon technologies based on renewable energy sources (RESs) and electric vehicles (EVs) and away from the heavy use of fossil fuels. To meet the high forecasted demand, unconventional sources of metals such as low-grade complex ores, seafloor massive sulfides (SMSs), and wastes (e.g., tailings, metallurgical residues, and electronic wastes (e-wastes)) have become very important sources of metals; moreover, these metals should be extracted in a sustainable manner without negatively impacting the environment. This Special Issue focused on recent advances in the sustainable production of metals from the above-mentioned unconventional sources.This reprint is a compilation of a Special Issue of Minerals, “Sustainable Production of Metals for Low-Carbon Technologies”, where 13 papers contributed by experts in the area were published. Papers published in this Reprint cover a wide range of topics, including mineral processing (gravity concentration, magnetic separation, and flotation), hydrometallurgical techniques (leaching, solvent extraction, and cementation) to extract minerals/metals from primary and secondary resources.     Description: Aluminum alloys and aluminum matrix composite materials have become the first choice to replace steel materials due to their high specific strength. The penetration rate of light alloys in new energy vehicles, the aerospace industry, and the rapid rail transit industry is increasing quickly. The reduction in energy consumption resulting from structural weight reduction is the key element for sustainable development. For example, every 100 kg reduction in car mass can save 0.6 L of fuel per 100 kilometers and reduce the emission of 800–900 g of carbon dioxide. For every 10% reduction in the weight of new energy vehicles, their range can be increased by 5.5% (for every 10 kg reduction in the weight of pure electric vehicles, their range can be increased by 2.5 km). The comprehensive proportion of aluminum alloys in automobiles will reach about 26% by 2040. The vigorous development of the automotive manufacturing industry has provided a huge application scenario for aluminum alloy profiles, aluminum alloy castings, and forgings.     Description: The war in Ukraine, with the exposure of nuclear power stations and the danger of atomic warfare, has made the legacy of the Soviet nuclear sector of critical importance. The two authors map the Soviet nuclear industry in a shifting historical context, making sense of a complex socio-technical and environmental history. Taking an innovative approach, this book explores the history of atomic power in the former Soviet Union using the spatial dimensions of the nuclear industry as a point of departure. The key concept is that of the archipelago – a network of nuclear facilities spread throughout the Soviet territory, but mutually reliant on each other and densely connected. The story traces the emergence of nuclear science and technology for military and civilian purposes through to the post-Soviet Russian nuclear corporations as providers of resources and technology. The book explains how nuclear developments in the Soviet Union interacted with processes of environmental and landscape change. The spatial lens offers an analytically fruitful and pedagogically stimulating way to comprehend the nuclear histories of the Soviet Union and its successor states.

Wie Wolf-Rüdiger Wagner zeigt, entsprach die im deutschsprachigen Raum übliche Kurrentschrift nicht mehr den Anforderungen an schriftliche Kommunikation. Als »Beschleunigungsmittel des Gedankenverkehrs« bot sich die Stenografie an. Ihre Nutzung als Verkehrsschrift setzte jedoch eine Einheitskurzschrift voraus. Zu deren Einführung kam es aber erst 1924 nach langwierigen Verhandlungen auf Druck der Reichsregierung. Anhand von Presseberichten und Archivtexten bietet der Band einen Einblick in die vielschichtigen Beziehungen zwischen gesellschaftlichen, technischen und kulturellen Entwicklungen sowie den Veränderungen im Bereich der Kommunikation.

    Description: This open access book is the first to provide an analysis of the Dutch paper industry over a period encompassing six centuries. Responding to a trend of renewed scholarly interest in paper industries and production, the book seeks to illuminate the factors behind this relatively small national industry’s centuries-long survival. Previous historical research has shown that sets of colonial, trade, merchant and family networks, tightly interwoven through a dense web of capital, were crucial for paper production and trade in early modern Europe. This book situates the Dutch paper industry within these overlapping contexts and their shifting dynamics over time, and historicizes the challenges and obstacles it had to overcome through four phases of capitalism: the rise of Dutch capitalism (1580–1815), Dutch monarchic liberalism (1815–1914), Fordism (1914–1980), and post-Fordism (1980 until now). Each chapter covers not only technological advancements in the industry, but its development alongside further determining dimensions, such as state-industry relations (industry policies), labour-capital relations (unions) and competition and cooperation, overall painting a picture of how the industry adapted to and endured changes in national and global networks surrounding the industry. This book will be of broad interest to scholars of economic and business history, as well as industrial history, political economy, and management studies.

    Notes: Beim Schmelzen Cu-haltiger Stoffe mit Soda und Schwefel und Ausziehen der Schmelze mit Wasser können beträchtliche Mengen Cu mit in die Sulfosalzlösung gehen, besonders bei Gegenwart von viel Sn. Das gelöste Cu läßt sich aus der Sulfosalzlösung durch Zusätze von NaOH, Na2S und Na2SO3 oder weniger gut KCN zum größeren Teil wiederabscheiden, doch bleibt ein von Art und Menge der Begleitmetalle abhängiger Rest Cu in Lösung. Zuverlässiger ist die Trennung des gelösten Cu von As, Sb und Sn durch Wiederausfällung der Sulfide mit Säure und anschließende Behandlung mit einem Gemisch von NaOH, Na2S und Na2SO3. Aber auch diese Trennung ist nur auf ½-1 mg genau, da immer etwas Cu mit in Lösung geht.

Der Abbau von Na2B4O7·10H2O schlägt, wie durch tensimetrische Messungen und durch Entwässerungsversuche über Trockenmitteln erkannt, je nach Vorbehandlung der untersuchten Präparate zwei grundsätzlich verschiedene Wege ein: Ein zuvor auf etwa 50° angetempertes Zehnhydrat geht in scharf ausgeprägter Stufe (10 mm isobar bei 20°) reversibel in kristallines Fünfhydrat über  -  „stabiler Abbau“  - , und dessen weiteres Verhalten entspricht ganz dem des oberhalb 60° aus Lösung kristallisierenden Pentahydrates. Frisch umkristallisiertes, „ungeschmortes“ Zehnhydrat hingegen wird bei gleicher Temperatur unter Entwicklung eines sehr viel kleineren Dampfdruckes, selbst nach langen Reaktionszeiten, zu einer viel wasserärmeren Stufe abgebaut. Der Bodenkörper zeigt bei einem Restgehalt von 5Mol H2O noch deutlich, bei 3 Mol und darunter abklingend die Interferenzen des Zehnhydrates neben zunehmend amorpher Beschaffenheit, die mit 2 Mol Restwasser praktisch voll erreicht ist. Dieser „instabile Abbauvorgang“ ist nicht reversibel; vorsichtige Wiederanwässerung der Rückstände aus dem Dampfraum oder auch leichtes Antempern der zwischen 10 und 3H2O liegenden Bodenkörper, etwa auf 50°, fuhrt diese „instabilen“ Abbausysteme in die „stabilen“ Verhältnisse über, d. h. veranlaßt  -  rontgenographisch festgestellt  -  die Bildung des Fünfhydrates.

    Notes: Für den Nachweis geringer Mengen Kobalt neben Eisen mittels der Ammoniumrhodanid-Acetonreaktion wird zur Abscheidung des Ferrieisens gefälltes Calciumcarbonat verwendet. Während nach der Arbeitsweise von VOGEL (Trennung mittels Sodalösung) und nach der Methode von KOLTHOFF (Komplexmachung des Ferrieisens mittels Ammoniumfluorid) die Empfindlichkeit der Kobaltreaktion wesentlich herabgesetzt wird, wird bei der Eisenabscheidung mittels Calcium carbonat der Kobaltnachweis nicht beeinträchtigt, indem noch 1,5 mg Co/Liter neben einer mindestens 10000 fachen Menge Eisen durch die mit Rhodanid-Aceton eintretende Blaufärbung nachweisbar sind. Die bei den Methoden von VOGEL baw. KOLTHOFF für die eintretende Verminderung der Empfindlichkeit des Kobaltnachweises mit Rhodanid-Aceton in Betracht kommenden Umstände werden an Hand von Versuchen besprochen.

    Notes: Die auf der stark kieselsäurereichen Seite des Systems K2O- SiO2-C02 auftretenden Gleichgewichte wurden bestimmt. Die Absorption von Kohlendioxyd durch Kaliumdisilikat führt zu Gleichgewichtsdrucken, die der Bildung von Kaliumtetrasilikat und einem gesättigten Carbonatmischkristall zugehören. Die Reaktion des Kaliumtetrasilikates mit Carbonat ergab dementsprechend zuerst bis zur Sättigung am Reaktionsprodukt, die bei 20 Mol-% K2Si2O5 eingetreten ist, ein divariantes Gleichgewicht. Die Einstellung dieser Gleichgewichte erfolgt schon bei Temperaturen oberhalb 200° und mit einer Geschwindigkeit, die für die Reaktion silikatischer Phasen im festen Zustand überraschend ist und auf Grund bisheriger Erfahrungen nicht erwartet werden konnte, so daß diese Versuche ein ganz neues Licht auf die Reaktionsfähigkeit der Silikate werfen. Weiterhin wurde der Einfluß, den verschiedene Faktoren auf diese Gleichgewichte bzw. deren Einstellgeschwindigkeit ausüben, klargelegt, so die Wirkung der Gegenwart von Feuchtigkeit (des von den Silikaten absorbierten Wassers), des Aggregatzustandes, glasig-kristallin, des Vorhandenseins frischer Reaktionsflächen, des Mischungsverhältnisses usw.

    Notes: Ultramarinblau wird bei Behandlung mit siedenden, starken Alkalilaugen unter den beschriebenen Bedingungen in farblose, kristalline Alkalialumosilikate übergeführt; hierbei wirkt Kalilauge - abweichend von Natron- und Lithiumlauge - nur sehr langsam ein. Während mit Lithium- und Kalilauge durch vollständigen Schwefelabbau schwefelfreie Verbindungen entstehen, bildet sich mit Natronlauge ein Natriumalumosilikat, das einen thionatartigen Schwefelanteil enthält. Kalilauge und Lithiumlauge tauschen außerdem alles Natrium gegen Kalium und Lithium aus. Sobald das Ultramaringitter grundlegend verändert oder zerstört wird, verschwindet die blaue Farbe1.

    Notes: 1. Bei den Versuchen WO3 mit aktivem Wasserstoff bei Zimmertemperatur zu reduzieren, wurde festgestellt, daß der Wasserstoff angelagert wird unter Bildung von W4O10(OH)2. Es ist anzunehmen, daß auch in anderen Fallen die Reduktion von Oxyden mit Wasserstoff zunächst über eine Wasserstoffanlagerung verläuft, wie wir es zum erstenmal a m Beispiel des WO3 experimentell bewiesen haben.

    Notes: 1. Kohlenoxyd wird von Cupritetramminverbindungen, z. B. Cupritetramminhydroxyd, -carbonat, -acetat, -chlorid, -sulfat, -nitrat, in wäßrig-ammoniakalischen Lösungen aufgenommen unter Bildung von Kohlendioxyd, das zu Carbonat gebunden wird und in der Lösung verbleibt. Die Absorption des Kohlenoxyds, die zunächst langsam vor sich geht, wird dann durch autokatalytische Vorgänge wesentlich beschleunigt. Alles Cuprisalz wird in Cuprosalz übergeführt unter Entfärbung der Lösungen, die schließlich Cuproammincarbonat und dasjenige Cuproamminsalz enthalten, das dem ursprünglich angesetzten Cupriamminsalz entspricht.

    Notes: Versuche über die Inversion von Rohrzuckerlösungen durch HCl und H2SO4 im tropischen Sonnenlicht führen zu dem Ergebnis, daß das Licht allein die Inversion bewirkt; die Inversion wird erhöht bei Zusatz von Katalysatoren, so daß Katalysator und Belichtung einander unterstützen.     Notes: Die beschriebenen Versuchsergebnisse zeigen, daß Talk beim Glühen mit den Chloriden von Mg, Mn und Co reagiert, daß die Reaktionen aber anders verlaufen als die des Pyrophyllit. Beim Talk reagieren jeweils nur die Zersetzungsprodukte MgSiO3 und SiO2 - nicht aber eine definierte Verbindung Mg3Si4O11 - entweder mit den Metalloxyden, die aus den Chloriden und dem beim Glühen aus dem Talk entweichenden Wasser gebildet werden, oder es findet Ersatz des Mg im Metasilikat von HARALDSEN durch die Metallionen der Chloride statt. Als Reaktionsprodukte treten daher im wesentlichen MgSiO3 und MeSiO3 bzw. Mischkristalle (Mg, Me)SiO3 neben freier Kieselsaure und etwas Orthosilikat auf. Von einer definierten Verbindung Mg3Si4O11 ist nichts zu erkennen. Charakteristisch ist, daß diese „Talkreaktion“ sowohl mit MgCl2 und CoCl2 als auch mit MnCl2, stattfindet. Dieses Verhalten unterscheidet sich wesentlich von dem Verhalten des Pyrophyllit bei analogen Reaktionen. Der geglühte Pyrophyllit addiert nur COO und MgO, nicht aber MnO, das auf komplizierte Weise reagiert. Das Co-Reaktions Produkt des Talk ist überdies rosa, wahrend das entsprechende Produkt des Pyrophyllit tiefblau ist. Der Pyrophyllit lagert nach der H2O-Abgabe MgO bis zu maximal einem Mol zu einer definierten Verbindung an, während der Talk von MgO zu Orthosilikat umgesetzt wird.
