Es un ensayo con rigor documental y formato académico que espera estimular e l hallazgo de errores, aciertos y perfiles humanos que moldearon lo que hoy tenernos. Es un eslabón escrito en esa gran cadena de acontecimientos sucesivos que se pierden en la memoria y el tiempo. Es un primer paso por traer esos momentos, a quienes vivimos momentos que serán leídos en el futuro, ojalá impresos. Entrevistas, discusiones con protagonistas, lecturas, bibliotecas donde el mar es una referencia y 110 una razón de ser, viajes, interpretaciones de un comentario de alguien que fue presente y realidad, crítica aguda de un pensamiento o una orden que cambió el destino de un ser humano o una institución. Horas eternas de intentos. giros de una hélice que estuvo parada, de velas al pairo de una nave que nunca dio marcha atrás. Un universo demasiado grande para describir, pero unas páginas que ayudan a entenderlo.

    Description: The First ODINAFRICA II Training Workshop in Marine Data Management was held in Casablanca, Morocco, April 2-13, 2001, attended by students from ten western African nations and one eastern African nation. ODINAFRICA is a data and information project working towards establishing a lasting network of marine and aquatic institutes in Africa. Its headquarters is located at the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI) in Mombasa, Kenya. Through its information services to the scientific community, the project aims at promoting the scientific capabilities of this continent. The objectives of the ODINAFRICA project are as follows: a) Provide marine scientists in Africa with the necessary bibliographic and scientific literature b) Make full use of the scientific literature available in Africa c) Promote and facilitate communication between marine scientists in Africa d) Promote and facilitate communication in Africa and other regions e) Promote the scientific activities of the marine and coastal scientists within and outside Africa f) Provide scientific information, and equipment, software and training to make full use of this information Under the leadership of the IOC, and with funding generously provided by the government of Flanders, the workshop was designed to address the final objective listed above. The workshop was organized locally in Casablanca by Dr. Maria Snoussi of the Université Mohammed V, Faculté des Sciences, Département Sciences de la Terre, Rabat, Morocco.

    Description: First ODINAFRICA II Training Workshop in Marine Data Management was held in Casablanca, Morocco, April 2-13, 2001. Subsequent to the Casablanca workshop, the nation of Cote d’Ivoire has joined the ODINAFRICA program, and in order to bring the Ivorienne student up-to-date with the materials and training experience already provided in 2001, a special workshop has been held in Abidjan from March 21-29, 2002, hosted by the Centre des Recherches Oceanographiques (CRO). This report describes the content and accomplishments of that special workshop. The workshop programme was based on the IOC OceanTeacher capacity building tool - an extensive collation of documents on marine data, formats, software, program and data management procedures, manuals, protocols, and associated tutorials. A set of intersessional assignments was formulated that included a wide range of specific dataset measures and products that will be assigned regularly through the recently-established ODINAFRICA.net communication network.

    Description: The Marine Environmental Data Information Referral Catalogue (MEDI) is a directory system for datasets, data catalogues and data inventories developed by IODE. The IODE Steering Group for MEDI was established to support the MEDI system. During its Third Session the Steering Group discussed the implementation of a marine community profile of the ISO 19115 metadata standard. The marine community profile developed by the Australian Ocean Data Centre Joint Facility will be disseminated for comment through a new IODE metadata discussion list. The Steering Group will review comments received and recommend a marine profile for MEDI. The Steering Group agreed that governance of vocabularies used by MEDI should be responsibility of the MarineXML group. The Steering Group also discussed cooperation with the JCOMM Water Temperature Metadata (META-T) Pilot Project and agreed that SG-MEDI can assist the META-T Pilot Project by providing discovery metadata tools and format and also with the technical governance of controlled vocabularies.

    Description: The Second ODINCARSA Training Course in Marine Data Management was held in Cartagena, Colombia between 13 and 17 October 2003, hosted by the Centro de Investigaciones Oceanográficas e Hidrogáficas (CIOH). The course was attended by students from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador and Perú. The key objective of the training course was to establish a core group of trained data management instructors with the ability to teach the OceanTeacher system. A total of nine data managers were certified to provide future training for the ODINCARSA region. Four instructors were identified who could provide the training in both Spanish and English. The group discussed additional training material that could be included in OceanTeacher and agreed to provide a Spanish translation of OceanTeacher.
