    Description: The first English translation of Magnus the Lawmender’s law code, this book allows students and scholars to interpret, compare and add their perspectives to this crucial source to European legal history. The Laws of the Land are one of the very few law books issued in the Middle Ages which regulated a whole kingdom. It stayed in force until the late 17th century, shaping society, politics and law in Norway and its surrounding regions for over 400 years. This book is separated into three parts. The first is an introduction to the laws written by the translator, Jóhanna Katrín Friðriksdóttir. The second and longest section of the book is a complete English translation of the Laws of the Land. The final part is a glossary, which lays out the most important Old Norse legal terms with English translations. The glossary also contains explanations and conversions of religious feast days which are relevant in the law. Providing familiarity with the Laws of the Land, this book is crucial to students and scholars of Medieval history alike to understanding the social, legal, political, and intellectual developments of the Nordic High Middle Ages.

    Description: This book aims to rewrite the narrative of women and power in medieval society. Based on a rich corpus of sources – systematically collected for the first time – it reveals female monasteries as central and economically able agents in feudal society. With a chronological focus on the late Middle Ages, this book focuses on four powerful convents located in modern-day France, Germany, and Switzerland. Three of these institutions were aristocratic convents founded in the early Middle Ages. They were endowed with far-ranging feudal prerogatives that were largely, but not exclusively, derived from landed possessions. The fourth convent originated in the thirteenth century and disposed of a primarily monetary economy. Observed from a longue-durée perspective, Monastic Women and Secular Economy in Later Medieval Europe reveals strategies of adaptations that allowed these different institutions to weather the significant economic changes of the late Middle Ages. Within the context of medieval feudal society, these abbesses and prioresses were authoritative figures. They ruled over territories, dispensed justice, appointed priests, and even sent soldiers to war. Late medieval convents acted as urban landlords and gave credits – they were thus major economic players in the rising cities. These observations of this monograph will force medievalists to reconsider the traditional image of both the “male” feudal Middle Ages and medieval monetary economy.

Since there were no court protocols kept, legal practice must be studied through other sources.     Description: The book is the first systematic study of the beginnings of psychoanalysis on Polish lands in Galicia (Austria-Hungary) and Congress Poland (Russia) during the partitions of Poland in the years between 1900 and 1918. The birth of the movement was presented on a broad cultural background, as an element of the assimilation processes among Polish Jews. At the same time, Freud's and Jung's theories began to gain popularity in Polish medical, philosophical, artistic and literary circles. By 1918, over a dozen articles on psychoanalysis had been published in Polish scientific and philosophical journals. Freud himself was vitally interested in this process, sending Ludwig Jekels to Krakow in the role of – as he wrote – an "apostle" of his theory in the circles of the Polish intelligentsia.

    Description: This volume examines the Melkite church from the Arab invasion of Syria in 634 until 969. The Melkite Patriarchates were established in Antioch, Jerusalem and Alexandria and, following the Arab campaigns in Syria and Egypt, they all came under the new Muslim state. Over the next decades the Melkite church underwent a process of gradual marginalization, moving from the privileged position of the state confession to becoming one of the religious minorities of the Caliphate. This transition took place in the context of theological and political interactions with the Byzantine Empire, the Patriarchate of Constantinople, the Papacy and, over time, with the reborn Roman Empire in the West. Exploring the various processes within the Melkite church this volume also examines Caliphate–Byzantine interactions, the cultural and religious influences of Constantinople, the synthesis of Greek, Arab and Syriac elements, the process of Arabization of communities, and Melkite relations with distant Rome.

    Description: This book deals with the challenges for history education arising from the centrality of colonialism in shaping the modern world. It breaks new ground by bringing together an international range of national studies on the legacies of colonialism that permeate the way how colonial history is thought and taught at schools. The case studies examine the representation, understanding and use of colonial heritage from different angles: They focus on European and non-European states as well as on states with and without colonial past as colonizers or colonized. Thus, and with its wide range of approaches – postcolonial theory, memory studies, educational media studies, teaching practice – this volume makes an essential research contribution to the ongoing international debate on the position of colonial history in present and future history education.

    Description: After 1989, the interest of Czech readers in unconventional, "other" literature, underground and dissidentism, as well as authors of literary modernism and the avant-garde, who did not belong to the official literary canon during socialism, grew. Ladislav Klima, Jakub Demi and also Richard Weiner get into focus. In addition to a series of individual publications since 1996, the long-planned work edition of Weiner is published. Richard Weiner experiences a veritable renaissance. Weiner's multi-layered prose tries to do justice to this work by means of different interpretations: living in a foreign state versus affinity with the homeland, homoerotic inclination versus the claim of a heterosexually normalized society, search for meaning and salvation versus guilt feeling.
    Description: Nach 1989 wächst das Interesse eines tschechischen Leserkreises an unkonventioneller, "anderer" Literatur, an Underground und Dissidententum, aber auch an den Autoren der literarischen Moderne und Avantgarde, die während des Sozialismus nicht zum offiziellen Literaturkanon gehörten. Ladislav Klima, Jakub Demi und auch Richard Weiner geraten in den Focus. Neben einer Reihe von Einzelpublikationen wird seit 1996 die seit langem geplante Werkausgabe Weiners herausgegeben. Richard Weiner erlebt eine regelrechte Renaissance. Der vielschichtigen Prosa Weiners versucht diese Arbeit mittels unterschiedlicher Lesarten gerecht zu werden: Leben in der Fremde versus Verbundenheit mit der Heimat, homoerotische Neigung versus Anspruch einer heterosexuell normierten Gesellschaft, Suche nach Sinn und Erlösung versus Schuldempfinden.

    Description: In den Romanen von F. M. Dostoevskij nehmen Gesprächsdarstellungen einen auffallend breiten Raum ein. So ist es verständlich, daß in der Dostoevskij-Literatur immer wieder auf das Gewicht und die Bedeutung des interpersonalen Dialogs hingewiesen wird. Eine gründliche und umfassende Untersuchung des interpersonalen Dialogs, der gerade in den fünf großen Romanen Dostoevskijs ein dominantes Merkmal der Darbietungsweise ist, liegt allerdings noch nicht vor. Aufgrund dieser Forschungslage empfiehlt es sich, die Strukturformen und Funktionsmöglichkeiten des interpersonalen Dialogs zunächst nur in einem der großen Prosawerke Dostoevskijs zu untersuchen. Für ein derartiges Vorhaben erscheint "Idiot" besonders geeignet.

    Description: The focus of the following work is the Russian author N.M. Karamzin (1766-1826), who is still known in Russia today for his sentimentalist narrative "Bednaja Liza" and the twelve-volume "Istorija gosudarstva rossijskogo". At the end of the 18th and in the first third of the 19th century, at the time of their creation, his works were widely read, Karamzin, as a sentimentalist writer as well as a historiographer, had some success in the contemporary reading public. The work is chronological, beginning with Karamzin's early work, Pisma Russkogo putešestvennika (1791-92), then examining a selection of sentimentalist narratives that appeared in the period 1792-1803 and ending with Istorija gosudarstva rossijskogo ", whose first eight volumes were published in 1818. Examined are the different discourses, which are assigned to the text categories travel writing, sentimentalistische povest 'and historiography, and others. in terms of narrative linkage.
    Description: Im Mittelpunkt der folgenden Arbeit steht der russische Autor N.M. Karamzin (1766-1826), der heute in Rußland noch durch seine sentimentalistische Erzählung "Bednaja Liza" sowie die zwölfbändige "Istorija gosudarstva rossijskogo" bekannt ist. Ende des 18. und im ersten Drittel des 19. Jahrhunderts, zur Zeit ihres Entstehens, wurden seine Werke viel gelesen, hatte Karamzin sowohl als sentimentalistischer Schriftsteller wie als Historiograph einigen Erfolg beim zeitgenössischen Lesepublikum. Die Arbeit geht chronologisch vor, sie beginnt mit dem Frühwerk Karamzins, den "Pisma russkogo putešestvennika" (1791-92), untersucht dann eine Auswahl der sentimentalistischen Erzählungen, die in der Zeit von 1792-1803 erschienen, und endet mit der "Istorija gosudarstva rossijskogo" , deren erste acht Bände 1818 veröffentlicht wurden.     Description: We are reaching a point in history when the generation who experienced the Holocaust as survivors, witnesses or exiles will soon disappear. What happens to our relationship to such a momentous event in global history when our living connection with such a past is broken? To answer this question, this article will explore recent French representations of the Holocaust through the comic book. It will approach such representations from the perspective of the grandchildren of those who were affected by the Holocaust, perhaps the last generation to have personal ties to this wartime past. It will focus specifically on Jérémie Dres’s Nous n’irons pas voir Auschwitz (2011), translated as We Won’t Go and See Auschwitz. As a “third generation” narrative, Dres’s work is attentive to stories of Jewish exile and loss to be found on the margins of Holocaust histories. This perspective translates into an openness towards transnational histories of the Holocaust; a recognition of place as a substitute for living memory and an awareness of comics’ potential to innovate in the transmission of Holocaust memories. Ultimately, this article will argue that the contemporary comic book acts as a privileged vehicle of remembrance, indicative of the reordering of Holocaust representations in an age of cultural memory.

In the 1950s and early 60s they went to colleges and universities, trained for professions and developed a life of the mind. They were also urged to embrace their femininity, to marry young, to devote themselves to husbands, children and communities. Could they do both? While they might be seen as a privileged group, they led the way for a multitude in the years ahead. They were quietly making the revolution that was to come. Did they have ‘the best of all possible worlds’? Or were they caught in a double bind? Sylvia Plath’s letters tell of her delighted sense of life opening before her as a ‘college girl’. Her poetry, however, tells of anguish, of reaching for distant goals. Drawing on interviews, surveys, reunion books, letters, biographical and autobiographical writing from both American and Australian women, this cultural history argues that the choices that faced educated women in that time led to the revolution of the late 1960s and 70s. Something had to give. There are lessons here for today’s young women, facing again conflicting expectations. Is it possible, they ask, to ‘have it all’?

    Description: Social and economic histories of the long eighteenth century have largely ignored women as a class of landowners and improvers. 1700 to 1830 was a period in which the landscape of large swathes of the English Midlands was reshaped – both materially and imaginatively – by parliamentary enclosure and a bundle of other new practices. Outside the Midlands too, local landscapes were remodelled in line with the improving ideals of the era. Yet while we know a great deal about the men who pushed forward schemes for enclosure and sponsored agricultural improvement, far less is known about the role played by female landowners and farmers and their contributions to landscape change. Drawing on examples from across Georgian England, Elite Women and the Agricultural Landscape, 1700–1830 offers a detailed study of elite women’s relationships with landed property, specifically as they were mediated through the lens of their estate management and improvement. This highly original book provides an explicitly feminist historical geography of the eighteenth-century English rural landscape. It addresses important questions about propertied women’s role in English rural communities and in Georgian society more generally, whilst contributing to wider cultural debates about women’s place in the environmental, social and economic history of Britain. It will be of interest to those working in Historical and Cultural Geography, Social, Economic and Cultural History, Women’s Studies, Gender Studies and Landscape Studies.

    Description: 〈P〉The purpose of th is study is to describe certain features of Tsvetaeva's intermediate world and to demonstrate its relation to several peculiarities of Tsvetaeva's poetics, specifically, her predilection for oxymoron and the ambiguous nature and behavior of her lyrical personae. Furthermore, these important structural elements are viewed as inherent in Tsvetaeva's dichotomous poetic vision. Two thematic cores, "love" and "poetry", are analyzed with particular attention given to the investigation of the nature of their opposition. An analysis of the "love"/"poetry" pair specifically serves as a vehicle for obtaining information about the intermediate world. 〈/P〉

    Description: In approaching F. M . Dostoevskij's novels with the express purpose of identifying and determining the function of literary portraiture, one is faced with an unexpected enormous gallery of literary portraits. These are verbal accounts or drawings in words, in which physical appearance and facial expression are described not only to evoke a visual image, but more specifically to discern the inner man. The vast amount of material that came to light in the pursuit of this study has necessitated a selection and omission of equally valid specimens, which would further substantiate that Dostoevskij was a close observer of the physical properties of his characters and that he employed them to delineate psychological and moral disposition.

    Description: La Dordogne, anciennement Périgord, est située dans l’historiographie en périphérie de la zone des familles souches du Sud-Ouest. Le mode de transmission et de reproduction familiale permet de comprendre comment s’organise la famille et comment se nouent les liens en son sein. Outre les relations juridiques, économiques, patrimoniales, est-il possible d’approcher les relations d’ordre affectif? L’étude porte sur les familles ayant vécu dans le village de Saint-Léon-sur-l’Isle, entre 1780 et 1839. Une lecture très fine des sources, notamment des actes notariés, met en évidence les logiques de comportement et leur évolution pendant une période de bouleversements qui malmènent les équilibres familiaux. Elle livre également un aperçu de l’intimité familiale, celle du couple en particulier.

    Description: The aim of this monograph is to present the traces of intercultural encounters between Poland and Latin America realized by means of literary translations produced in the post-war period. It considers various aspects of the reception of Polish translations of Spanish American prose in 1945-2005 by examining their presence on the book market in the communist times and after 1990 in free market conditions. The analyses of critical texts show the attitudes of Polish critics towards this prose over the years. Survey research presents motives, behaviours and needs developed in different epochs by Polish readers. The interdisciplinary character of the monograph involves methodology inspired by translation, reception and cultural studies, sociology of literature and intercultural semantics.

    Description: At the center of most of the contributions to the synonym was the paradigmatic relations between lexems, as I will show in a detailed research overview. Despite the abundant literature on this subject, little attention has been paid to questions of the nature, nature and functions of synonymous relationships in the text. The present work should therefore make it clear that only the analysis of the syntagmatic relations, for which I will use the terms "synonymy" and "synonymic" in contrast to the paradigmatic synonymy, will provide important insights into the contextual meaning constitution and the semantic structure of texts.
    Description: Im Mittelpunkt der meisten Beiträge zur Synonymik standen bisher die paradigmatischen Relationen zwischen Lexemen, wie ich in einem ausführlichen Forschungsüberblick zeigen werde. Trotz der reichhaltigen Literatur zu diesem Thema ist den Fragen nach Wesen, Beschaffenheit und Funktionen der synonymischen Beziehungen im Text bisher kaum Beachtung geschenkt worden.     Description: From the mid-1950s to the late 1970s, jazz was harnessed as America’s "sonic weapon" to promote an image to the world of a free and democratic America. Dizzy Gillespie, Dave Brubeck, Duke Ellington and other well-known jazz musicians were sent around the world – including to an array of Communist countries – as "jazz ambassadors" in order to mitigate the negative image associated with domestic racial problems. While many non-Americans embraced the Americanism behind this jazz diplomacy without question, others criticized American domestic and foreign policies while still appreciating jazz – thus jazz, despite its popularity, also became a medium for expressing anti-Americanism. This book examines the development of jazz outside America, including across diverse historical periods and geographies – shedding light on the effectiveness of jazz as an instrument of state power within a global political context.

    Description: Gegenstand der vorliegenden Arbeit ist das sowjetrussische Autorenlied, eine Gattung, die trotz der Tatsache, daß die ihr zuzurechnenden Werke gesanglich vorgetragen werden, eindeutig der Dichtung angehört. Der erste Teil (A) stellt einführend die notwendigen biographischen Daten zu den hier im Mittelpunkt stehenden Gedichtsängern und das Textmaterial im Hinblick auf seine Gattungsspezifik in aller Kürze vor. Im Rahmen des eher literatursoziologisch orientierten zweiten Teils (B) wird die Stellung des Autorenlieds innerhalb der sowjetischen Kultur beschrieben, unter Akzentuierung der Zusammenhänge zwischen der Entstehung dieser Gattung und den sehr speziellen kulturellen Bedingungen in der Sowjetunion der späten 50er Jahre.

    Description: Das früheste Zeugnis der slavischen christlichen Literatur ist in drei Handschriften überliefert, die in der deutschen Slavistik unter dem Namen Freisinger Denkmäler (Fris) bekannt sind. Es handelt sich um zwei Beichtgebete, Freising I und Freising III, und um eine Bußpredigt, Freising II, die in der wissenschaftlichen Forschung die Bezeichnung "Adhortatio ad poenitentiam" erhalten hat. In einer systematischen Untersuchung des christlich-religiösen Wortschatzes der Freisinger Denkmäler, die man trotz erheblicher Unterschiede als eine Einheit betrachtet, soll gezeigt werden, mit welchen Mitteln und welchem Einfluß die sprachliche Aufnahme des christlichen Gedankengutes erfolgte.

    Description: Die sprachlichen und stilistischen Schwierigkeiten bei der Lektüre von "Der traurige Detektiv" offenbaren sich darin, dass sowohl die Figuren, als auch die Autorenspräche viele und mannigfaltige Nuancen zeigen, für deren Aufdeckung manchmal sogar die größeren Wörterbücher der russischen Sprache nicht ausreichend sind. Das vorliegende Buch hat zum Teil auch einen "linguistisch-landeskundlichen" Charakter, insbesondere bei Begriffen, die durch die russische und sowjetische Geschichte und gegenwärtige Gesellschaftsordnung geprägt sind, Begriffen, die in der deutschen Sprache und Realität keine direkten Entsprechungen aufweisen.

    Description: During the Middle Ages, rulers from different regions aspired to an idea of imperial hegemony. On the other hand, there were rulers who deliberately refused to be «emperors», although their reign showed characteristics of imperial rule. The contributions in this volume ask for the reasons why some rulers such as Charlemagne strove for imperial titles, whereas others voluntarily shrank from them. They also look at the characteristics of and rituals connected to imperial rule as well as to the way Medieval empires saw themselves. Thus, the authors in this volume adopt a transcultural perspective, covering Western, Eastern, Northern and Southern Europe, Byzantium and the Middle East. Furthermore, they go beyond the borders of Christianity by including various caliphates and Islamic «hegemonic» rulers like Saladin.
