    Beschreibung: The first English translation of Magnus the Lawmender’s law code, this book allows students and scholars to interpret, compare and add their perspectives to this crucial source to European legal history. The Laws of the Land are one of the very few law books issued in the Middle Ages which regulated a whole kingdom. It stayed in force until the late 17th century, shaping society, politics and law in Norway and its surrounding regions for over 400 years. This book is separated into three parts. The first is an introduction to the laws written by the translator, Jóhanna Katrín Friðriksdóttir. The second and longest section of the book is a complete English translation of the Laws of the Land. The final part is a glossary, which lays out the most important Old Norse legal terms with English translations. The glossary also contains explanations and conversions of religious feast days which are relevant in the law. Providing familiarity with the Laws of the Land, this book is crucial to students and scholars of Medieval history alike to understanding the social, legal, political, and intellectual developments of the Nordic High Middle Ages.

    Beschreibung: This book aims to rewrite the narrative of women and power in medieval society. Based on a rich corpus of sources – systematically collected for the first time – it reveals female monasteries as central and economically able agents in feudal society. With a chronological focus on the late Middle Ages, this book focuses on four powerful convents located in modern-day France, Germany, and Switzerland. Three of these institutions were aristocratic convents founded in the early Middle Ages. They were endowed with far-ranging feudal prerogatives that were largely, but not exclusively, derived from landed possessions. The fourth convent originated in the thirteenth century and disposed of a primarily monetary economy. Observed from a longue-durée perspective, Monastic Women and Secular Economy in Later Medieval Europe reveals strategies of adaptations that allowed these different institutions to weather the significant economic changes of the late Middle Ages. Within the context of medieval feudal society, these abbesses and prioresses were authoritative figures. They ruled over territories, dispensed justice, appointed priests, and even sent soldiers to war. Late medieval convents acted as urban landlords and gave credits – they were thus major economic players in the rising cities. These observations of this monograph will force medievalists to reconsider the traditional image of both the “male” feudal Middle Ages and medieval monetary economy.

Since there were no court protocols kept, legal practice must be studied through other sources. For this book, more than 6,000 original charters have been researched, and a database of all the charters pertaining to women created. This enables new findings from an area that has previously not been studied on a larger scale, and reveals trends and tendencies regarding aspects considered central to married women’s agency, such as networks, criminal liability, and procedural capacity.

    Beschreibung: The book is the first systematic study of the beginnings of psychoanalysis on Polish lands in Galicia (Austria-Hungary) and Congress Poland (Russia) during the partitions of Poland in the years between 1900 and 1918. The birth of the movement was presented on a broad cultural background, as an element of the assimilation processes among Polish Jews. At the same time, Freud's and Jung's theories began to gain popularity in Polish medical, philosophical, artistic and literary circles. By 1918, over a dozen articles on psychoanalysis had been published in Polish scientific and philosophical journals. Freud himself was vitally interested in this process, sending Ludwig Jekels to Krakow in the role of – as he wrote – an "apostle" of his theory in the circles of the Polish intelligentsia.

The Melkite Patriarchates were established in Antioch, Jerusalem and Alexandria and, following the Arab campaigns in Syria and Egypt, they all came under the new Muslim state.     Beschreibung: 〈P〉Vasilij Kirillovič Trediakovskij: dieser Name allein schreckt die meisten Leser ab. Daß dieser Gelehrte neben Lomonosov zu den Gründern der neueren russischen Literatur gehört, wird selten gebührend erwähnt. Diese Arbeit soll von ihm handeln, und besonders von einem Werk, das beinahe nicht zur Kenntnis genommen wird. Es soll eine gänzlich in Vergessenheit geratene Begegnung wieder ans Licht kommen: die Begegnung zwischen dem Autor Trediakovskij, dessen Rolle in der Literaturgeschichte unterschätzt wird, und einem Roman John Barclays, der "Argenis", dem in ganz Europa populärsten Roman des 17. Jahrhunderts. Hier wird eine Übersetzung Gegenstand sein; dennoch handelt es sich hier keineswegs um eine übersetzungskritische Arbeit. 〈/P〉

    Beschreibung: Seit langer Zeit konkurrieren monetäre und nicht-monetäre Ursachen bei der Erklärung von Inflation. Während Milton Friedman («Inflation is always and everywhere a monetary phenomenon») die erste Position vertritt, finden z.B. Paul Samuelson oder John Cochrane auch Argumente für nicht-monetäre Ursachen. Die Arbeit untersucht in Bezug auf Russland, zwischen 1992 und 2004, ob die nicht-monetären Ursachen der Inflation empirisch relevant sind. Russland ist für diese Frage insofern von besonderer Bedeutung, als es ein Paradebeispiel für das Vorkommen nicht-monetärer Inflationsursachen bietet: Die Ergebnisse der ökonometrischen Untersuchung bestätigen, dass die nicht-monetären Inflationsursachen eine wichtige Rolle in der Inflationsentwicklung spielen.

    Beschreibung: 〈P〉Wenn es um Tendenzen in der neueren russischen Sprache geht, fällt recht oft das Wort Analytismus. Eine Entwicklung hin zum Analytismus wird oft als eine der deutlichsten Tendenzen in der russischen Gegenwartssprache genannt. Die Analyse der morpho-syntaktischen und lexiko-semantischen Struktur sowie der funktionalen Charakteristika analytischer K onstruktionen soll Hinweise auf Gründe für eine Tendenz zum Analytismus geben. Hauptziel der Untersuchung ist es festzustellen, wie deutlich und bestimmend die Tendenz zum Analytismus für die russische Fachsprache der Mathematik in ihrer Entwicklung seit dem 18. Jahrhundert, das heißt seit dem ersten in Rußland gedruckten Mathematikbuch, der Arithmetik Magnickijs aus dem Jahre 1703, gewesen ist. 〈/P〉

Eine gründliche und umfassende Untersuchung des interpersonalen Dialogs, der gerade in den fünf großen Romanen Dostoevskijs ein dominantes Merkmal der Darbietungsweise ist, liegt allerdings noch nicht vor. Aufgrund dieser Forschungslage empfiehlt es sich, die Strukturformen und Funktionsmöglichkeiten des interpersonalen Dialogs zunächst nur in einem der großen Prosawerke Dostoevskijs zu untersuchen. Für ein derartiges Vorhaben erscheint "Idiot" besonders geeignet.

    Beschreibung: The focus of the following work is the Russian author N.M. Karamzin (1766-1826), who is still known in Russia today for his sentimentalist narrative "Bednaja Liza" and the twelve-volume "Istorija gosudarstva rossijskogo". At the end of the 18th and in the first third of the 19th century, at the time of their creation, his works were widely read, Karamzin, as a sentimentalist writer as well as a historiographer, had some success in the contemporary reading public. The work is chronological, beginning with Karamzin's early work, Pisma Russkogo putešestvennika (1791-92), then examining a selection of sentimentalist narratives that appeared in the period 1792-1803 and ending with Istorija gosudarstva rossijskogo ", whose first eight volumes were published in 1818. Examined are the different discourses, which are assigned to the text categories travel writing, sentimentalistische povest 'and historiography, and others. in terms of narrative linkage.
    Beschreibung: Im Mittelpunkt der folgenden Arbeit steht der russische Autor N.M. Karamzin (1766-1826), der heute in Rußland noch durch seine sentimentalistische Erzählung "Bednaja Liza" sowie die zwölfbändige "Istorija gosudarstva rossijskogo" bekannt ist. Ende des 18. und im ersten Drittel des 19. Jahrhunderts, zur Zeit ihres Entstehens, wurden seine Werke viel gelesen, hatte Karamzin sowohl als sentimentalistischer Schriftsteller wie als Historiograph einigen Erfolg beim zeitgenössischen Lesepublikum. Die Arbeit geht chronologisch vor, sie beginnt mit dem Frühwerk Karamzins, den "Pisma russkogo putešestvennika" (1791-92), untersucht dann eine Auswahl der sentimentalistischen Erzählungen, die in der Zeit von 1792-1803 erschienen, und endet mit der "Istorija gosudarstva rossijskogo" , deren erste acht Bände 1818 veröffentlicht wurden. Untersucht werden die unterschiedlichen Diskurse, die den Textgattungen Reisebriefe, sentimentalistische povest' und Geschichtsschreibung zuzuordnen sind, und zwar u.a. im Hinblick auf narrative Verknüpfung.

In the 1950s and early 60s they went to colleges and universities, trained for professions and developed a life of the mind. They were also urged to embrace their femininity, to marry young, to devote themselves to husbands, children and communities. Could they do both? While they might be seen as a privileged group, they led the way for a multitude in the years ahead. They were quietly making the revolution that was to come. Did they have ‘the best of all possible worlds’? Or were they caught in a double bind? Sylvia Plath’s letters tell of her delighted sense of life opening before her as a ‘college girl’. Her poetry, however, tells of anguish, of reaching for distant goals. Drawing on interviews, surveys, reunion books, letters, biographical and autobiographical writing from both American and Australian women, this cultural history argues that the choices that faced educated women in that time led to the revolution of the late 1960s and 70s. Something had to give. There are lessons here for today’s young women, facing again conflicting expectations. Is it possible, they ask, to ‘have it all’?

Band (1712) gediehenen Werkes ist geeignet, Aufschlüsse über die in der sprachwissenschaftlichen Literatur wenig berücksichtigte Epoche der Wende vom 17. zum 18. Jahrhundert und des Anfangs des 18. Jahrhunderts zu geben.

Es handelt sich dabei um den ältesten erhaltenen ostslavischen Sammelband, der neben Werken der Übersetzungsliteratur auch Werke ostslavischer Herkunft, das Skazanie von Boris und Gleb, das Skazanie von den Wundern der beiden Heiligen Roman und David und die Vita des Feodosij Pečerskij enthält. Dazu kommen aus der ältesten Zeit des slavischen Schrifttums die Vita des Slavenapostels Method und die Laudatio für Kyrill und Method, ferner eine Homilie über Christi Himmelfahrt, die seit Kalajdovič als Originalwerk des Exarchen Johannes gilt.

    Beschreibung: Social and economic histories of the long eighteenth century have largely ignored women as a class of landowners and improvers. 1700 to 1830 was a period in which the landscape of large swathes of the English Midlands was reshaped – both materially and imaginatively – by parliamentary enclosure and a bundle of other new practices. Outside the Midlands too, local landscapes were remodelled in line with the improving ideals of the era. Yet while we know a great deal about the men who pushed forward schemes for enclosure and sponsored agricultural improvement, far less is known about the role played by female landowners and farmers and their contributions to landscape change. Drawing on examples from across Georgian England, Elite Women and the Agricultural Landscape, 1700–1830 offers a detailed study of elite women’s relationships with landed property, specifically as they were mediated through the lens of their estate management and improvement. This highly original book provides an explicitly feminist historical geography of the eighteenth-century English rural landscape. It addresses important questions about propertied women’s role in English rural communities and in Georgian society more generally, whilst contributing to wider cultural debates about women’s place in the environmental, social and economic history of Britain. It will be of interest to those working in Historical and Cultural Geography, Social, Economic and Cultural History, Women’s Studies, Gender Studies and Landscape Studies.

Im Zusammenhang damit wird der Versuch unternommen, die sprachimmanenten Bedingungen für das erscheinen jenes besonderen Typs von Komposita zu analysieren, die russisch als "složnosokraščennye slova" bezeichnet werden und deutsch meist als "Kurzwörter" bekannt sind.

Furthermore, these important structural elements are viewed as inherent in Tsvetaeva's dichotomous poetic vision. Two thematic cores, "love" and "poetry", are analyzed with particular attention given to the investigation of the nature of their opposition. An analysis of the "love"/"poetry" pair specifically serves as a vehicle for obtaining information about the intermediate world. 〈/P〉

L’étude porte sur les familles ayant vécu dans le village de Saint-Léon-sur-l’Isle, entre 1780 et 1839. Une lecture très fine des sources, notamment des actes notariés, met en évidence les logiques de comportement et leur évolution pendant une période de bouleversements qui malmènent les équilibres familiaux. Elle livre également un aperçu de l’intimité familiale, celle du couple en particulier.

    Beschreibung: In dieser Arbeit wird der Nachweis erbracht, dass es im Rahmen der neoklassischen Theorie nicht möglich ist, grundlegende Probleme der Transformation realsozialistischer Wirtschafssysteme im Hinblick auf Unternehmen zu erkennen. Um diesen Defiziten begegnen zu können, wird der Versuch eines theoretischen Gegenentwurfs unternommen, der vor allem auf dem methodischen Ansatz der Österreichischen Schule fußt. Das Erklärungspotential dieses praxeologisch-eigentumsrechtlichen Theorieansatzes wird am Beispiel der Transformation des Wirtschaftssystems in Russland demonstriert. Es zeigt sich, dass nicht die sogenannte Privatisierung bestehender Unternehmensstrukturen, sondern die ungehinderte Schaffung neuer Unternehmen eine Lösung der Transformationskrise verspricht.

    Beschreibung: From the mid-1950s to the late 1970s, jazz was harnessed as America’s "sonic weapon" to promote an image to the world of a free and democratic America. Dizzy Gillespie, Dave Brubeck, Duke Ellington and other well-known jazz musicians were sent around the world – including to an array of Communist countries – as "jazz ambassadors" in order to mitigate the negative image associated with domestic racial problems. While many non-Americans embraced the Americanism behind this jazz diplomacy without question, others criticized American domestic and foreign policies while still appreciating jazz – thus jazz, despite its popularity, also became a medium for expressing anti-Americanism. This book examines the development of jazz outside America, including across diverse historical periods and geographies – shedding light on the effectiveness of jazz as an instrument of state power within a global political context.

Der erste Teil (A) stellt einführend die notwendigen biographischen Daten zu den hier im Mittelpunkt stehenden Gedichtsängern und das Textmaterial im Hinblick auf seine Gattungsspezifik in aller Kürze vor. Im Rahmen des eher literatursoziologisch orientierten zweiten Teils (B) wird die Stellung des Autorenlieds innerhalb der sowjetischen Kultur beschrieben, unter Akzentuierung der Zusammenhänge zwischen der Entstehung dieser Gattung und den sehr speziellen kulturellen Bedingungen in der Sowjetunion der späten 50er Jahre.

    Beschreibung: During the Middle Ages, rulers from different regions aspired to an idea of imperial hegemony. On the other hand, there were rulers who deliberately refused to be «emperors», although their reign showed characteristics of imperial rule. The contributions in this volume ask for the reasons why some rulers such as Charlemagne strove for imperial titles, whereas others voluntarily shrank from them. They also look at the characteristics of and rituals connected to imperial rule as well as to the way Medieval empires saw themselves. Thus, the authors in this volume adopt a transcultural perspective, covering Western, Eastern, Northern and Southern Europe, Byzantium and the Middle East. Furthermore, they go beyond the borders of Christianity by including various caliphates and Islamic «hegemonic» rulers like Saladin.

Trifonov saw it as the most important task of literature as well as his personally most important task as a writer, "to represent the phenomenon of life and the phenomenon of time".

Trifonov sah es als die wichtigste Aufgabe der Literatur wie auch als seine persönlich wichtigste Aufgabe als Schriftsteller an, "das Phänomen Leben und das Phänomen Zeit darzustellen".

    Beschreibung: Der vorliegende Text "Sieg über die Sonne" von Aleksaj Kručenych, mit einem Prolog von Velimir Chlebnikov, ist das Libretto für eine Oper, deren Musik Matjušin komponierte und für die Kazimir Malevič die Bühnenbilder und Kostüme entwarf. Kručenychs Text ist bisher kaum seiner Bedeutung für die Bewegung des russischen Kubofuturismus gemäß behandelt worden. Die vorliegende Übersetzung ist ein Versuch, die Bedeutungsvielfalt des Prologs und des Hauptteils zur Geltung zu bringen und in möglichst kohärenter Sprache zu vermitteln.

    Beschreibung: Im Unterschied zu den meisten anderen Arbeiten, die einen Redeteil herausgreifen und dann analysieren, von welchen Redeteilen die ihm angehörigen Lexeme deriviert sind, wird hier eine andere Richtung verfolgt. Es soll gezeigt werden: a) welche Wörter aus welchen Redeteilen von Angehörigen eines bestimmten Redeteils (des Redeteils "Adjektiv") als abgeleitet gedacht werden können und b) über welche Ausdrucksmittel das Russische verfügt, um aus diesem Fundus von Lexemen mit bestimmten Bedeutungen und Formen andere Lexeme mit modifizierten Bedeutungen abzuleiten, ferner, c) wie diese Mittel kombiniert werden und schließlich d) wie sie sich im Hinblick auf ihre funktionelle Belastung (functional load, funkcional'naja nagruzka) voneinander unterscheiden.

    Beschreibung: Die Altgläubigen sind eine ethnokonfessionelle russischsprachige Religionsgemeinschaft, deren Ursprung in der Ablehnung der Kirchenreformen im 17. Jh. liegt und deren Sprache sich durch ausgeprägten Konservatismus auszeichnet. Das Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit besteht in der Untersuchung der Sprache der Altgläubigen in ihren Versammlungsprotokollen und -beschlüssen, die dafür zu einem umfangreichen diachronen Korpus zusammengetragen wurden. Dabei fließen Erkenntnisse über die soziokulturelle Geschichte der Altgläubigen und über die bemerkenswerte Dynamik innerhalb dieser konfessionellen Gemeinschaft in die sprachwissenschaftliche Analyse ein und helfen bei der Suche nach plausiblen Erklärungen für sprachliche Phänomene. Im Fokus der Untersuchung steht der Begriff sobor, der in der Sprache der Altgläubigen von großer Bedeutung ist und in ihren Versammlungsprotokollen und -beschlüssen besonders häufig vorkommt.
