Description: Since the Middle Ages, the history of universities and colleges has been characterised by a tense and fruitful interplay of persistence and reform. The fact that these oldest institutions of organised knowledge transfer still exist today has to do with their ability to balance the constantly competing conservative and progressive elements of their educational mission. The contributions collected in this volume examine the conditions for the success of university and higher education between stagnation and progress from an educational history perspective spanning several epochs. International comparisons are taken into account in a variety of ways. In addition, it is shown which types of sources exist and how these can be used for research on university and higher education history from a global perspective.

Description: Based on a qualitative, longitudinal and constructivist research approach, the project at hand explores the decision-making process within the inclusive transition from secondary school I to further education from the perspectives of teenagers with disabilities and parents (with/without disabilities). The narratives of 5 families (3 teenagers with disabilities, 3 fathers, 5 mothers with/without disabilities) are of interest. The interviews were conducted three times (every year) during the transition-/decision-making process along the method of intensive interviewing (Charmaz 2014). The analysis of the qualitative data (32 interviews) was based on the coding process according to Charmaz (2014). Through data analysis three types of decision-making could be identified (giving up decision, forcing decision, taking over decision) as subforms of two higher-level decision-making mechanisms named make an independent decision and make a(n) (independent) decision with support. The expectation of an independent decision-making individual is central for teenagers with disabilities and their parents. Different types of “volition” are connected to the decision-making processes, depending on if the teenagers with disabilities make an independent decision (really want it), make a decision with support ((don’t) want it) or make a decision owing to given opinions (have to). Due to the longitudinal research design the educational trajectories of teenagers with disabilities are also reconstructed.

Description: The present work "Lernwerkstatt als Prinzip - Möglichkeiten für Lehre und Forschung" (Learning Workshop as Principle - Possibilities for Teaching and Research), as the third volume of the series "Lernen und Studieren in Lernwerkstätten" (Learning and Studying in Learning Workshops), takes up the question of the possibilities of the principle of learning workshop work as a productive moment of developments in higher education didactics. Currently, there are controversial efforts to place the education of future pedagogues and educational scientists in a closer practical and research context. In this context, learning workshops as higher education institutions play a central role. Despite diverse forms and foundations, university learning workshops are united by a fundamental understanding: learning workshop work as a principle. In the contributions to this volume, the authors explore the potential of learning workshops for teaching and research in the context of science.

Description: Documentary school research establishes a research direction in which the interrelationship of subject-related knowledge acquisition and methodological-methodological aspects is reflexively examined. This volume is the prelude to several anthologies that have been produced in theDFG-funded network ""Documentary School Research"" (NeDoS) and are dedicated to this interrelationship. Three subject areas of documentary school research are the focus of this first volume: School Development, School Culture and School as Organisation. Fundamental questions are raised and dealt with in conceptual contributions. The current research situation is systematically presented in study reviews for each of the three subject areas as well as for existing English-language studies. Current approaches and results of school research operating with the documentary method are also presented in empirical contributions. Finally, the anthology also shows gaps and desiderata in school research using the documentary method and encourages further work in this field of research.

Description: How do patterns of national inclusion and exclusion make themselves felt at school? What experiences do students have in their everyday school life? How are they shaped by these experiences? This empirical study examines processes of subjectivation in schooling biographies of young Kurdish women in Turkey and asks how relations of inclusion and exclusion in the nation-state are inscribed in subjects through school. It shows the relevance of processes of appropriation and resistance for the formation of self-conceptions in the face of natio-ethno-cultural (non-)belonging and closes with thoughts on marginalized agency.
Welche Erfahrungen machen Schüler*innen in ihrem Schulalltag?

Description: The late 1960s can be described as a time of democratic awakening and social upheaval, also regarding discussions on education. Taking this period of critique and questioning as a starting point, the work proceeds to examine knowledge movements. Knowledge circulation and knowledge transformation processes between political and educational practice as well as educational theory are analysed on the basis of 9 biographical narratives of people who were active in educational or political practice projects around 1968. The first theoretical part of this thesis outlines the historical context and introduces the state of research on '1968 and pedagogy'. Subsequently, the thesis introduces its knowledge-historical theoretical approaches, from which the concept of knowledge movements developed for this thesis emerges. The first part of the thesis concludes with the presentation of the methodical and methodological premises, explains theoretically the applied procedure of an integrative coupling of discourses and biographies and shows the form of practical application in the work. The second part of the thesis includes the presentation of the empirical results and along inductively identified thematic strands, various aspects of new perspectives that can be considered as (co-)inspired/stimulated by the critical-alternative pedagogical milieu that are examined in greater detail. The third part of the paper presents the results and links them back to the theoretical premises. Thus, it is shown how knowledge of the discursive space of the critical-alternative pedagogical milieu changed through its discursive entanglements with the established educational science and how the established educational science entered a communicative process of opening through the confrontation with the new forms of knowledge. For educational science, the results and documented processes can thus can thus serve as a sample for contemplation and be referred to introspectively in the context of today's processes of theory formation or research. Disciplinary continuities and discontinuities were shown and hence it is possible to revise/identify trends or demarcations via the knowledge-historical findings of the work.

Description: This work presents a structural and operative model of successful processes of school reform, based on eleven source-based studies on the history of educational and school-based pedagogy. Oriented on real-world cases and sources, these studies analyse the reform practices of historical reform schools during the twentieth century. The point of reference in each case is the individual school as a pedagogical unit of action. The studies are historically and empirically grounded and provide in-depth insights into the historical practices of schools as well as historical school reforms. The term “conditions for success” is employed here to focus on organisational structures and pedagogical patterns of action within historical processes of reform. The findings are derived from the inherent logic of practical pedagogical processes of reform. These are structures and patterns of action developed by the pedagogical professionals themselves through social processes. The results of the educational-historical source studies are collated here in a model of recurring professional patterns of pedagogical action and structure. The resulting historically and empirically developed “Five-plus-two-K Structure of Successful School Reform Processes” was tested on 100 modern day reform schools and it could be shown that these processes recur over a period of about one hundred years. Following the inherent logic of pedagogical processes in schools, the “Five-plus-two-K Structure of Successful School Reform Processes” was developed through a process of professional pedagogical action, shaped by professional pedagogical action and interaction, and was differentiated for professional pedagogical action. This model is integrative on the basis that it is primarily pedagogically constituted and was closely developed with educational professionals. The model is thus an educational-historical contribution to a theory of school reform processes and contributes to the pedagogical understanding of the processes of school development.

Description: Die Illusion der Berufswahl.
Description: The illusion of career choice. On the importance of the fit between habitus and field for career choice strategies of student teachers The unanimous results of standardized research on the career choice of student teachers indicate the desire to work with children as a central motive of (prospective) teachers for their career choice. Pragmatic, but equally obvious motivations such as a secure job, good wages, holidays or family-friendliness, seem to be negligible. In contrast, the present study attempts to shed light not so much on the explicitly mentioned rational reasons, but rather on immanent or latent motivations for choosing the teaching profession. The spotlight is not on the front stage of the manifest career choice motives, but on the back stage of the social influences on career-related orientations. Pierre Bourdieu's concept of the dialectic of habitus and field is used to explore career choice. Using the so-called “Sequenzanalytische Habitusrekonstruktion” (sequence-analytical habitus reconstruction), which follows Bourdieu's concepts, job-related, problem-centered interviews show the great importance of the individualized habitus for job-related orientations and the (unconscious) career choice strategies of student teachers. Likewise, the implicit teacher images and the anticipated teacher behavior of the students come to light. On the one hand, the study contributes to teacher training by revealing the illusio and social order of students, their professional orientations, and their subjective job profiles, thus holding up a mirror to teacher education. On the other hand, this thesis also claims to explore the phenomenon of career choice from a perspective that has so far not been illuminated. Thus, a necessary double fit for the students becomes recognizable – a fit to the requirement logic of the field of origin as well as to the requirements logic of the aspired professional field of arrival.

Description: The change of saying "From the Turkish yoke" to "Germany's friendship for Turkey" shows the changed perception of the Ottoman Empire in German history textbooks of the 19th and early early 20th century. This book offers comprehensive insights into historical textbook texts and their ways of representing "Turks" and "Turkey", which have hardly been taken into account in research on the history of education. It documents the interplay of images of the self and the other within the the pedagogical discourse of the time from a transnational and transnational and postcolonial perspective.
Description: This open-access book is based on the observation that learning ecosystems are increasingly established in higher education institutions. However, an important aspect that is still missing is their interconnectedness. Consequently, the book intends to close this gap by introducing the concept of a distributed learning ecosystem (DLE). A DLE follows the idea of establishing an interlinkage between decentralised learning ecosystems (consisting of content repositories and educational resources) and thus serves as an integrated approach that enables learners to access and use learning content and share resources.

Description: Although many educational researchers were pioneers in the integration of technology into teaching and learning prior to 2000, institutions started extensively adopting technology in their courses around this period. However, the adoption process was slow and mainly followed the traditional mode of teaching in the formal university learning environment. The COVID-19 pandemic’s disruption “forced” everyone to use technology for teaching and learning purposes, supporting synchronous and/or asynchronous teaching and learning processes. This book aims not only to present successful practice examples from before or during the COVID-19 pandemic, but also to provide useful information to university teachers, assisting them in further understanding the higher education context, demands and challenges of digital education. Including evidence from the current higher education landscape from all over the world and discussing various frameworks allows institutions and policymakers to take decisions about the future digital education transformation, while teachers and educational researchers can find examples of how various digital learning tools (i.e., virtual simulations and e-portfolios) are integrated into teaching and learning processes in various environment (i.e., online, and blended learning). Considering experiences prior to the COVID-19 pandemic alongside the opportunities and challenges brought about by the pandemic, this book can support the higher education sector in considering curriculum reformations and introducing innovative teaching and learning approaches to meet the Industrial 4.0 revolution.

Description: The second volume of the series "Learning and studying in learning workshops" discusses how inclusion can be thematized, problematized and, above all, realized in the context of learning workshops and learning workshop work. After a theoretical embedding of the concept of inclusion in the context of learning workshops and the description of possible potentials that learning workshops at universities have for an inclusion-oriented training of future educators, the learning workshop work is framed as an inclusive didactical concept of higher education. In the third chapter of the volume, results from testing and researching inclusive didactics in the context of university learning workshops are presented. From different perspectives, a multifaceted picture of learning workshops in universities as spaces of inclusive pedagogy emerges, in which diversity is welcome and the balance of valuing individuality and community reference can be lived.

Description: Cultural Transfer and Circulation of Knowledge in the long 1960s. The German-American Fulbright Program for teachers. The dissertation traces intercultural knowledge movements between West Germany and the United States in the long 1960s, initiated by the teacher exchange of the German-American Fulbright Program, focussing on everyday culture and the educational/professional context. For the first time, the Annual Exchange Teacher's Reports on Teaching Experiences in the United States, which are kept in the archives of the German-American Fulbright Commission in Berlin, will be evaluated alongside further sources on the institutionalization, design and operationalization of the German-American Fulbright Program. The reports were submitted as completed questionnaires and form the basis of the work as a serial source. They provide information on how German exchange teachers perceived and reflected on their stay in the USA and show which misconceptions were consolidated or overcome. At the same time, knowledge circulation can be traced, and exchange teachers can be identified as agents of a knowledge movement after World War II. The aim here is not so much to write a normative success story of a straightforward US culture transfer to West Germany. Rather, the focus is on the multi-layered, interwoven, and above all open-ended knowledge movements as part of the German-American educational and cultural transfer processes of the post-war period. The focus will be on the agents, networks, structures, and communication spaces within the German-American Fulbright Program in order to understand where, how, and by whom elements were reflected, selected, adapted, and reshaped or rejected. Thus, the transatlantic exchange encounters of Fulbright teachers indicate that cultural objects and patterns of action as well as societal values were adopted from the United States, thus creating a readiness for modernization through adaptations and reinterpretations. The Fulbright Program continued the German-American educational exchange, setting new accents which influenced developments in the Federal Republic of Germany after 1945, especially in education and everyday culture, while at the same time aiding German culture in its initial opening up to ‚Americanization‘. As a result, the exchange teachers contributed to the cultural transfer between the U.S. and the Federal Republic of Germany in the long 1960s.

Description: The title "Structure and Action in Learning Workshops - Higher Education Didactic Spaces between Restriction and Enabling", the fifth volume of the series "Learning and Studying in Learning Workshops" takes up the question of the relationship between structural conditions and concrete actions of actors in higher education learning workshops. Since the restructuring of universities and educational programs in the context of the Bologna reforms, studying has become more structured and formalized. In contrast, learning workshops continue to open up spaces for self-determined and self-regulated learning processes. What does this situation mean for the work in university learning workshops? This volume brings together a total of 24 contributions that explore this question with both theoretical and empirical support and discuss the relationship between structure and action in learning workshops.

Description: School and teaching can hardly be thought of without the interconnectedness with digital media. Beyond the question of modes of media use, field observations informed by practice theory help to grasp pedagogical practices (not only) of media action in situ and in actu. The anthology brings together contributions with precisely this theoretical and methodological approach. From media pedagogical, school pedagogical and sociological perspectives, ethnographic or videographic style is used to access school practices in a culture of digitality. Literally, ""glimpses"" are given into different projects and approaches to classroom research.

Description: The core element in learning workshops and university learning workshops are the interaction and communication processes between teachers and learners. The aim of this volume is therefore to examine the multifaceted ""interactions and communications in university learning workshops"" from a theoretical perspective and with practical insights. The diverse contributions explore how different target groups and different actors (un)consciously shape their interactions and communications in higher education learning workshops and how they influence each other. In our opinion, a differentiation of the different roles and role functions that actors in the university learning workshop can take on and also change is particularly necessary for a sharpening of specific interaction patterns.

Description: In diesem Open.

Description: The volume "Space. Power. Inklusion." brings together selected papers from the 35th Annual Conference of Inclusion Researchers (IFO), which was hosted by the University of Innsbruck in cooperation with KPH Edith Stein from February 23-25, 2022. Under the impression of the global crises intensifying due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the conference focused on the importance of social spaces and powerful social orders for inclusion research. In this context, exclusion can be understood as the expropriation of spaces and their hegemonic occupation; inclusion, on the other hand, as their appropriation, radical democratization, and liberation. The contributions show how exclusive or inclusive spaces can be theoretically conceived, empirically investigated, and practically developed in current research projects.
Description: Der Band „Raum. Macht.

Description: Amid burgeoning international interest in the built environment of education, this SI examines the research, policy, and practice that lies behind the global trends in architecture and pedagogy. It contributes to the developing interdisciplinary understanding of the processes and products of school design at all stages, from ‘visioning’ and brief, through habitation and use, to post-occupancy evaluation. The intention is to build knowledge relating to successful design, educational affordances and outcomes, change management, and the alignment of physical resources with teaching and learning needs. The papers explore the multiprofessional landscape of educational spaces as they are planned, built, and used. Reflecting the diversity of the area, the SI features empirical work using a range of methodologies, transdisciplinary work and novel theoretical framings. It includes co-authored papers whose authorship bridges academic disciplines, research and practice, or research and policy. The over-arching aim was to capture the diversity of research related to learning environments.

Description: In spring 2020, the COVID-19 virus and subsequent lockdown demanded that university institutions across the globe undertake an emergency migration to online teaching. To secure the continuation of university teaching, Emergency Remote Teaching (Bozkurt and Ramesh, 2020)—prompt rethinking and adjustment among university teachers—had to be managed. On the one hand, this abrupt change is associated with a certain digital and pedagogical potential for change due to the necessary adaptation efforts. On the other hand, it also poses an extraordinary organisational and pedagogical challenge. From an empirical perspective, it is therefore crucial to ask how university teachers and universities are tackling the coronavirus situation against the backdrop of the goal to maintain high-quality teaching. Furthermore, the adjustment and well-being of students in the context of hybrid and distance learning situations must remain in focus. The aim of this Special Issue was to provide unique insights into organisational, pedagogical, and psychological challenges related to digital transition in Higher Education institutions in different countries resulting from university lockdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic. It also discusses digital and pedagogical potentials evolving through the adaptation efforts related to the situation of Emergency Remote Teaching at universities.

Description: Today's ignorance of German-Turkish relations before the 1961 recruitment agreement stands in astonishing contrast to the attention paid to the Ottoman Empire before and during the First World War. Using a variety of previously unknown historical sources, the author reconstructs how German pedagogy and teachers in the Wilhelmine Empire contributed to the shaping of a German-Turkish educational space. To this end, she takes a transnational perspective on the actors, networks, and discourses that flanked Germany's world power ambitions at the time in terms of cultural policy. With her study, she makes an insightful contribution to the postcolonial historiography of pedagogy and educational science.

Description: Arguably one of the most characteristic features of the teacher-student relationship is its multifaceted asymmetry in knowledge, ability, experience, dependency, power, etc. The ambivalent significance of this asymmetry for the teacher-student interaction has been highlighted by educational researchers, teachers, and teacher educators alike. The asymmetrical relationship structure is assumed to be central to the “grammar of schooling” that enables pedagogical interaction in the classroom and sets its parameters. At the same time, it is also considered to pose challenges to teachers in their interaction with students. So far, however, no conceptual account of the asymmetry has been proposed, and few studies have investigated it systematically as a complex, multifaceted feature of the teacher-student relationship. This qualitative study examines the asymmetry from the teachers’ perspective. Drawing on structural-theoretical accounts of teacher professionalism and systems-theoretical conceptions of pedagogical communication, it develops a schematic conception of the asymmetry and its complexity that provides a heuristic frame of reference for the empirical study. Using an approach based on Mannheim’s and Bohnsack’s praxeological sociology of knowledge, the study asks how teachers experience their interaction with students regarding the asymmetry of their relationship and how they deal with and shape the asymmetry when interacting with students. The study focuses on the concept of collective orientations, or habitus, of teachers, i.e., collective, embodied, tacit knowledge that underlies the teachers’ actions as implicitly practice-guiding principles. The findings show that the interviewed teachers perceive the asymmetry as being shaped coconstructively through the interaction of teacher and students, although the interviewed teachers differ in how they experience the process of this co-construction: as antagonism or as congruence in co-construction. Moreover, the teachers take for granted the asymmetry of the relationship and their position as superior in knowledge, ability, and experience as well as power and control. They routinely and as a matter of course rely on this position when interacting with students. However, different collective orientations underlie this reliance on the asymmetry. Two contrasting types of orientations have been reconstructed: orientations primarily centered on the assumed requirements of pedagogical practice and orientations primarily centered on the teachers’ self-interest. Furthermore, the complexity of the asymmetrical relationship structure as spelled out by the heuristic-theoretical conception is not reflected in how the teachers experience their interaction with students regarding the asymmetry and how they deal with it. On the one hand, the interviewed teachers focus on selected aspects of the asymmetry. On the other hand, how they deal with the asymmetry is structurally analogous across theoretically distinguishable aspects. These results raise further questions on how teachers experience and deal with the asymmetry as well as more metatheoretical questions regarding the conception of collective orientations underlying teachers’ professional practice.

Description: In diesem Open-Access-Buch werden mittels Experteninterviews aus verschiedenen Akteursperspektiven Koordinationsprozesse zwischen Schulleitung, Schulaufsicht, Schulinspektion und Schulentwicklungsberatung untersucht.

Description: At the end of the book culture, enquiries about the self-understanding of school expand in the recognisable horizon of a transmedial network culture. Media-critical reform pedagogy holds on to talk and action as the leading medium and conceives school as a "media-resistant polis". In contrast, the mainstream school is justified as a 'literary counterculture' in which writing is to be defended as the highest achievement in the process of civilisation. In both lines of discourse on school pedagogy, school is conceived as a monomedial province. With reference to this, the present volume asserts: In mono-medial school provinces, which orient educational processes to a dominant leading medium, competences for a meaning-generating examination of topics, questions and problems of the establishing network culture are only marginally developed. Schools designed in this way are also less and less successful in connecting to the experiential horizons of children and young people who roam the extracurricular spectrum of media cultural architectures as transmedial nomads. Accordingly - also in view of the PISA results - the thesis of a new variant of school alienation must be examined. In critical distance to the perspectives presented, the potentiality of a media-ecological approach for a theorisation of school as a media-specific educational architecture is demonstrated. In doing so, the impact of media technologies on the contrasting shaping of spatiotemporal relations of cultural orders as well as synaesthetic relations of modes of perception will be examined. In relation to this, new educational potentials of transmedial networks can be heuristically identified. These are the focus of both the programmatic perspectives of media-ecological educational research and the conceptual outlook on schools in the image of a 'hypermedial plateau network'. (DIPF/Orig.)
Description: It is estimated that 50 –60 % of all adults with learning disabilities in Germany cohabitate with their relatives, mainly with their parents. Regional surveys confirm cohabitation often continues into the fifth decade of the disabled person’s lifespan (vgl. Lindmeier et al. 2018). With the aging of the family members, the vulnerability of the family life situation increases. Changes are commonly initiated by the parents’ decreasing health, directly affecting the parents ability of care intensity . Until now, science and practice have not developed suitable offers of support. In general, older families are subject to a problem-focused professional discourse and experience themselves confronted with normative regulations. While in the sociological discourse assumptions of normality regarding a family-biography are discussed critically, the work with families with disabled children still assumes a standardized family life cycle as a view on the support structure underlines. Offers of support for older families underestimate the biographical value of their life design and the desire of having this acknowledged, respected and noticed while exploring future perspectives. The presented example of biographical research explores the biographical meanings of living together with an adult disabled child from a parental perspective. The study follows the intention to generate a better understanding and above all appreciation for familiar realities, to support them developing perspectives for their future and to contribute to a new attitude towards older families. In this context family isn’t defined as a stable institution (vgl. Fuhs 2002, 23) but as a making in the sense of doing family (vgl. Jurczyk/Lange & Thiessen 2014). In order to portray the diversity of family-life-stories, to reconstruct crisis and strategies of coping, to trace conceptions of ‘being family’ and to classify the social practice of living together, biographical research is chosen. This appears in the methodology as well as in the epistemological basis of this thesis. On the one hand, biographies are generated in a complex, dialectic interaction of individual acting and social structures. On the other hand, they structure individual acting in turn. Thus, living together can no longer be seen as a sole demonstration of individual action but is likewise socially contextualized. With this approach, the view for the diversity of families with disabled children is enhanced and the long term cohabitation is no longer interpretated as a demonstration of parental failure but as a manifestation of meaningful practice in which society participates at any time. To be able to comprehend the methodic procedure, this thesis starts with a detailed theoretical discussion of its main subjects that are “biography”, “family”, “older families”, “residing/living circumstances” and “age/ageing”. In a next step, conferring to the leading issue and the underlying conceptualization of biography, the chosen methods of research are explained. The narrative interview and the biographical case reconstruction according to Gabriele Rosenthal (2014) are eminently suitable to reflect the complex dialectic relation between social structure and individual behaviour inherent to biography. Thus, the thesis attempts to trace and to compare the social phenomenon of living together focusing on the genesis, the maintenance/perpetuation and the transformation, based on three detailed examples of biographies of older parents with disabled children. The presented results form the basis to derive consequences for a different approach to older families and ideas are discussed to adjust and/or reconstruct structures of support. The proposed approaches emphasize disabled people’s right to a self-determined life, while they also respect the desire of many families to biographically continue their unique way of ‘doing family’, hence encouraging a “person and family”-centered planning process to be the future starting point. hence encouraging a “person and family”-centered planning process to be the future starting point.

Description: This Special Issue (Engaging Students in Sustainable Science Education) compiled effective approaches to student engagement in science-related classes. Some articles were written by researchers in science education; however, the majority were prepared by college and university instructors based on their own instructional approaches, and were designed to help other practitioners improve student engagement in scientific contexts. Both types of contributors added value to this conversation. This Special Issue serves to unite science and education, identifying approaches that create stimulating scientific learning environments.

Description: Blended learning is not a new topic for educational research in Higher Education (HE). However, before the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, blended learning was studied by a "niche" of researchers and educators interested in technology integration in teaching and learning. It was not difficult to meet HE professionals who had never or only poorly reflected on the topic of how to integrate digital technology in teaching and learning before March 2020. All in all, this special issue provides a deeper understanding of what Blended Learning will be in the near feature, encompassing not the simple combination of online and physical presence, but a combination of delivery tools and media used to provide information and to support interaction, a combination of different methods of instruction and teaching/learning, and a combination of learning contexts.

A teacher from Germany opens her classroom to the videographic observations of a Japanese and a German research group. In order to build bridges between the different fields of work related to the same object - the teacher's teaching - the researchers and the teacher open their analytical perspectives of teaching to each other. The volume maps discursive border crossings between an action-oriented didactic, a qualitative-reconstructive and a development-oriented view of the Japanese Jugyo Kenkyu (Lesson Study), in which the different professional cultures meet without intervening transformatively in each other's fields. The different perspectives invite to perceive ideas and concepts of teaching and its research with other than the usual readings and to productively introduce related irritations into the debates about the research and development of teaching.

Description: The research project ""Aptitude and Health in the Study of Education for Learning Disabilities"" (EGIS-L) investigates the question of what aptitude students have for the chosen study programme and how they perceive and cope with the challenges and stresses involved. The research focus is on the areas of personal competence development and self-regulation, as well as health promotion and spirituality. The long-term study will also investigate the extent to which the findings have changed and developed from the beginning of the study programme after the intensive internship year to the end of the study programme. The research results, which were collected and interpreted methodologically in standardised written surveys and qualitative interviews, can provide important information for professionalisation research in the area of the first phase of special needs teacher education. Thus, an innovative contribution is to be made for the development and updating of special needs education study programmes.

Description: Reflection is a key concept in the German discourse on teacher education. It is connected to the claim that professional educators should be able to adapt their actions according to situational demands and justify their decisions in ways that non-professionals could not. This ideal mirrors the refusal of a teacher education model which is based on the transmission of well-established practical routines. A high-quality reflection is associated with adopting an observer’s point of view, permitting distance from the immediacy of pedagogical practice as well as access to scien- tific knowledge. Empirical studies on reflection situated in pedagogical practice instead suggest that adopting a distanced observer’s point of view is not what pedagogical practitioners do when they reflect on their work. This discrepancy between the ideal and the practical phenomenon can either hint at a shortcoming of the examined practice – or it can draw attention to practical pedagogical reflection as a phenomenon in its own right. The latter could allow for a reading of practical pedagogical reflection beyond a deficit-oriented approach and highlight ethical dimensions of a mode of reflection that is not indifferent to its subject. This study is an attempt at reconceptualising practical pedagogical reflection as a phenomenon worth theorising. The aim of this venture is to develop a concept of reflection that is sensitive to pedagogical practice. The suggested reading intends to pluralise the dominant understanding of reflection and explore context-specific facets of the phenomenon in question.

Description: Up until the latter years of the twentieth century, there was very little critical analysis of child protection policies and practices. The core assumption was that it was concerns about child abuse and neglect that provided the rationale and focus for child protection policies, practices, and systems, and they were assumed to be benign in both intent and impact. Increasingly, however, it has been recognised that a whole range of political, cultural, and sociological influences bear on the development and operation of child protection policies, practices, and systems and that these can have a whole range of negative consequences. The aim of this edited book, based on the Special Edition of the same title, is to provide a range of international cutting-edge papers that critically analyse different aspects of child protection, and which also provide suggestions about how child protection can be positively reformed.

How do parents cooperate with each other, what value do they attach to their interaction and how is the degree of cooperation related to social status? The study takes a close look at the social relationships among various groups of Chinese parents at a Chinese Mandarin language school in a metropolitan city in Germany. Taking an ethnographic approach, it captures a vivid picture of the parental social interactions in and outside the Chinese school setting. The study reveals the significance of social interactions, discussing it in relation to the parents’ socioeconomic backgrounds and individual migrant trajectories.

Description: The coming years will see an exponential increase in the proportion of elderly people in our society. This accelerated growth brings with it major challenges in relation to the sustainability of the system. There are different aspects where these changes will have a special incidence: health systems and their monitoring; the development of a framework in which the elderly can develop their daily lives satisfactorily; and in the design of intelligent cities adapted to the future sociodemographic profile. The discussion of the challenges faced, together with the current technological evolution, can show possible ways of meeting the challenges. There are different aspects where these changes will have a special incidence: health systems and their monitoring; the development of a framework in which the elderly can develop their daily lives satisfactorily; and in the design of intelligent cities adapted to the future sociodemographic profile. This special issue discusses various ways in which sustainable technologies can be applied to improve the lives of the elderly. Six articles on the subject are featured in this volume. From a systematic review of the literature to the development of gamification and health improvement projects. The articles present suggestive proposals for the improvement of the lives of the elderly. The volume is a resource of interest for the scientific community, since it shows different research gaps in the current state of the art. But it is also a document that can help social policy makers and people working in this domain to planning successful projects.

Description: This volume of Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability covers topics on green finance and investment, collaboration building and public engagement, and industry governance towards carbon neutrality and environmental sustainability. First, it presents issues related to embodied carbon in the international trade, impacts of the green finance system on carbon emissions, the implementation of green deal strategies, linkage between foreign direct investment and carbon emissions, and the implications of COVID-19 for decarbonisation actions. Following such critical problems, theoretical conceptualisation of new green deals, international research team collaboration for sustainability, nature conservation communication in social networks, and the efficiency of environmental policies in emission reduction are discussed. Next, close attention is paid to various industries, including agriculture, tourism, and manufacturing, by analysing topics relevant to the impacts of climate-related factors, assessment indicator systems or appraisal systems, and value chain systems. In addition, the book also presents disaster risk mapping studies for assessing vulnerability, best practices of risk management, and cases on environment-induced impacts on health. Results reported in this book are conducive to a better understanding of green finance and investment regimes, community engagement, and industry sustainability. We expect the book to benefit decision-makers, practitioners, and researchers in different fields and contribute to carbon neutrality and economic growth.

Description: This Special Issue of Sustainability on “Partnerships for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)” brings together a collection of articles that explore a diverse range of issues and challenges faced by partnership arrangements that seek to support the achievement of the SDGs and the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. As well as encompassing a diverse range of collaborative forms and themes, and involving a variety of stakeholders, these collaborative initiatives are all notably shaped by the dynamics of the particular contexts in which they operate. These contexts include individual, organizational, sectoral, spatial, and geographical settings. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on partnering for the SDGs is also apparent. The interplay between these elements offers a useful global–local context for further inquiry and reflection on how deeper and more meaningful collaborative relationships might be developed to achieve the SDG targets and beyond.

Description: Games are a natural activity—we all know how to play. Perhaps this is the key feature that explains the increase in the use of game-based learning (GBL) strategies: Applying games to education converts education into a universal activity. Over the last ten years, the way in which education and training is delivered has considerably changed, not only due to a new technologic environment—plenty of social networks, MOOCs, etc.—but also because of the appearance of new methodologies. Such new methodologies are shifting the center of gravity: from the teacher to the student, with the aim of awakening relational aspects, as well as promoting imagination and divergent thinking. One new approach that holds considerable promise for helping to engage learners is, indeed, game-based learning (GBL). However, while a growing number of institutions are beginning to see the validity of GBL, there are still many challenges to overcome before this type of learning can become widespread. In this Special Issue, we want to gather several studies and experiences in GBL to be shared with other teachers and researchers.

Description: International governments have committed to supporting the development of greater equity and inclusion in education. However—despite some progress—many individuals and communities continue to face discrimination, remaining on the margins of society. This collection of papers highlights the many challenges faced by persons perceived to be different from the majority population in their communities. This labelling of individuals has served to exclude many from engaging fully with the social and educational opportunities that the majority take for granted. The authors who have contributed to this Special Edition have challenged the stereotypical views of such individuals, ensuring that the voices of those who best understand the experience of living with discrimination can be heard. These papers demonstrate how listening to the voices of marginalised individuals can become an important first step towards a process of change. Such an action fundamentally challenges established procedures whereby opportunities to learn from the experiences of marginalised individuals have been neglected. We acknowledge that listening is only the starting point for a radical reengagement that enables marginalised individuals to fully participate in society. However, several of the authors who have contributed to this Special Edition have provided an indication of how the movement towards equity and inclusion may be advanced.

Description: This edited volume focuses on measuring and evaluating the effectiveness of diverse formal and informal educational programmes and activities across Europe. This publication contributes to the field by offering more empirical evidence as to the effective ways in which education can reduce social gaps in civic and political engagement. As editors, we prioritised the contributions of early-career researchers and those who have adopted fresh approaches and topics and highlighted helpful strategies to improve social equality and provide a more equitable distribution of learning resources among underprivileged groups. After two years’ close collaboration among academic editors, journal editors and authors, this Special Issue has finally been released in 2021 with eight papers. Inter alia, three papers focus on the school’s role in developing young people’s citizenship competences, such as knowledge, skills, interests and attitudes towards diversity. Two articles explore exclusion/minority groups cases, indicating valuable lessons for developing tailored educational materials and/or activities for hard-to-reach groups. As a unique contribution, two more papers emphasise experimental studies: the paper written by Steven Donbavand and Bryony Hoskins provides a comprehensive and systematic review of all the experimental designs on promoting political participation, whereas the submission written by Sven Ivens and Monika Oberle unpacks some details on how a digital intervention operates and improves to produce satisfying outcomes.

Description: Higher education has been considered both an ‘engine’ for innovation and a ‘catalyst’ for sustainability development; the integration of both the innovation engine and sustainability catalyst roles are discussed in a recently published Special Issue on the theme of Higher Education in Innovation Ecosystems in the journal Sustainability. Based on 16 articles contributing to the Special Issue from various perspectives, the Special Issue editors have developed an overarching framework about the relationships between higher education and innovation ecosystems. In the framework, we re-define the concept of innovation ecosystem and identify emerging roles of universities in developing sustainable innovation ecosystems. Re-conceptualization of innovation ecosystems In the editorial of the Special Issue, innovation ecosystem is defined as: co-innovation networks in which actors from organizations concerned with the functions of knowledge production, wealth creation, and norm control interact with each other in forming co-evolution and interdependent relations (both direct or indirect) in cross-geographical contexts and through which new ideas and approaches from various internal and external sources are integrated into a platform to generate shared values for the sustainable transformation of society. Compared with most commonly cited definitions of innovation ecosystem, our definition highlights three new aspects of interactions in co-innovation networks: cross-sectoral, transnational, and indirect, drawing insights from the literature including innovation, geography, and biology studies. The roles of universities in innovation ecosystems The emerging roles of universities in innovation ecosystems are as follows: (1) The role of universities is changing from being a central player in technology transfer to being an anchor in knowledge exchange; (2) universities are assuming a new role in trust-building between actors in innovation ecosystems; and (3) universities are not merely an entrepreneurial universities but are also institutional entrepreneur in the innovation ecosystem. The three emerging roles all indicate that universities are becoming the catalysts for sustainable development in innovation ecosystems. Knowledge exchange is crucial for sustainability; trust is the foundation of the sustainable networks; social entrepreneurship is indispensable for sustainable social change. Evidence in wider contexts A total of 44 authors from 10 countries contributed to the discussions on the changing roles of higher education in innovation ecosystems from varying perspectives. They also report transformations within higher education and universities’ responses to both external and internal transformations. When addressing these issues, the studies provide both theoretical and methodological contributions to the research on higher education in innovation ecosystems. The 16 articles can be generally placed into four categories: (1) new demands for universities arising from the transformation in society toward innovation ecosystems, (2) transformations within higher education responding to emerging societal demands, (3) dynamics of the interaction of university with other innovation actors in a transnational context, and (4) academic and student mobility for higher education innovation. Calling for a new research agenda While societal changes demand broader roles of universities, they also call for and leads to substantial changes within the internal fabric of the university. The innovations in both society and the universities necessitate a renewed understanding of higher education in society, which has become a new research agenda in studies on innovation in higher education. We hope our Special Issue will inspire and encourage more scholars to join the research field.

Description: Contrary to the assumption of worldwide diffusion processes of internationally circulating reform ideas in education there are examples of regions that resist. In the present study, the phenomenon of incorporating international reform ideas into local education systems is examined using new institutionalism as a theory for its explanatory power of worldwide diffusion processes in education together with a set of cases that offer semi-lab-like conditions: Not all German federated states have adopted Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees for teacher training; some have maintained the state examination. Based on this empirical finding, the question of the dissertation is: Whether and how were the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in German teacher training implemented on the federated statelevel in the period between 1999 and 2013? It can be shown that the federal ministers of higher education specified three core characteristics of the Bologna Process, namely the introduction of Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, a credit point system, and modularisation. A decision of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of Germany made in 2005 further ensured that the reformed degrees were recognised nationwide for teachers as well. The educational organisations’ demands were characterised by a large number of positive and only a few negative votes concerning the implementation of the Bologna Process in German teacher education. To provide specific insights into the reform process, this study focuses on teacher training for secondary school teachers, comparing the teacher training regulations as of 1999 with all subsequent changes until 2013 to obtain the degree of change for each federated state. As a result, it can be stated that eight states introduced reformed degrees into secondary school teacher education and eight states kept the state examination. Both groups are then compared as to whether a change of the degree towards Bachelor’s and Master’s is more likely to be accompanied by further reforms. The results suggest that while changes have occurred in all states, the percentage increase of courses in education and didactics, as well as the increased study duration, correlates positively with a change of the degree structure. Therefore one can interpret that the Bologna reforms, especially those concerning the degree structure, were used to implement other curricular and structural reforms that were not related to the Bologna Process itself. In the last step, plenary debates on the federated state level regarding the introduction of these Bologna reforms are analysed to examine the justifications for the introduction of a change in the degree structure, as well as for maintaining the state examination. Justifications or strategies for preserving the state examination are particularly relevant because they act against the political and public expectations analysed earlier. In a nutshell, it can be stated that the innovative strength of the partial reforms adopted in the hybrid model and the exclusion of a fundamental criticism of Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees are used as a strategy to reject the implementation of a new degree structure without being interpreted as non-innovative. Federated states that implemented the degree reform referenced decisions made in other states or regions, as well as possible negative consequences of not implementing the degrees, to support their decision while also presenting it within the discourse as a window of opportunity for more fundamental reforms in teacher training.

Description: Education is and will probably remain the all-dominant topic of the 21st century. The consequences of a lack of or exclusion from education must be correspondingly dramatic. In the economic and sociological labour market literature, the same dominant explanatory pattern, the displacement mechanism, can now be found for the increasing disadvantage of low-skilled persons: the low-skilled are "displaced" by the better-skilled. In contrast to the theoretical considerations and empirical analyses in this book, the significance of processes of increasing discreditation, social impoverishment and stigmatization is worked out and emphasized - it is therefore more a matter of social inequality than of "displacement".

Description: Sustainability is an urgent developmental task for our society and is attracting increasing attention. Therefore, higher education institutions (HEIs) are also called upon to deal theoretically, conceptually, methodically, critically, and reflectively with the associated challenges and the processes and conditions of transformation in order to contribute to sustainable development. How can complex organisations such as HEIs succeed in initiating and maintaining the process of sustainable development within their own institutions and make it a permanent responsibility? How can as many protagonists as possible be persuaded to get involved in sustainable development? This book deals with the promotion of sustainable university development and provides an overview of how universities can be organised sustainably and how sustainable development can be implemented in their various functional areas. In the sense of a “whole-institution approach”, which encompasses entire HEIs, the focus is not only on the core areas of teaching (higher education for sustainable development) and research (sustainability in research) but, also, on the operational management of HEIs. In addition, this book focuses on sustainability governance and transfer for sustainable development at HEIs as cross-disciplinary issues.

Description: Higher education institutions (HEIs) have a unique role and responsibility for the future and for driving the development of a sustainable society. HEIs are charged with the task of fostering sustainability in the leaders of tomorrow, developing solutions and methods for addressing a sustainable future and ensuring that knowledge is contributed to society. HEIs must also ensure that their everyday operations and practices are consistent with a sustainable future, and that they work toward holistically integrating sustainability into both the mission of a university and its daily tasks. This Special Issue builds on papers presented during the 2018 International Sustainable Campus Network Conference and also includes other contributions. The articles reflect the many aspects of sustainability in higher education institutions and illustrate innovation in approach, outcomes, and impact. The papers cover a range of perspectives on sustainability both on and around campuses. These include organization and management issues, networking and city partnership themes, and metrics and indicators related to sustainable development goals. The Special Issue also includes papers on education, student involvement, and gender issues. Select articles include results from surveys and desktop research; others depict approaches on experimentation, living labs, and action research.

Description: Within and outside Germany, practical phases in teacher education have been expanded in recent years. In contrast, empirical studies show that it is not primarily the duration of the internships but their qualitative design that is significant for the acquisition of competencies by the students. Against this background, the academic examination of concepts of learning support is gaining in importance. The authors in this volume take up this assumption and present ten context-bound learning support concepts and their empirical examination. Using qualitative and quantitative research methods, theory-based hypotheses are tested and framework conditions are included in the discussion. In this respect, the results of the studies presented promise on the one hand in-depth insights into the opportunities and challenges of learning support services in the school internship, and on the other hand they point to desiderata for further studies in this field of research.

Description: "This dissertation examines the relationship between collage – experiences of difference – artists. It explores the (art) history of collage as well as the perspective on collage as an artistic, methodological, epistemological and biographical principle. Likewise, the thesis that experiences of difference materialize artistically as well as biographically and can be found in textual and pictorial material will be pursued – with a focus on subjectification theory. Experiences of difference are understood in this research as reflections of experiences of discrimination and of othering (processes of being made into supposed others). The present research on subjectification – which centers on the life and work of Hannah Höch (1889-1978) – is carried out, on the one hand, on the basis of a discourse-analytical examination of biographical text documents of the artist; on the other hand, this very text analysis is related to an image analysis of the höch collage “Lebensbild” from 1972/1973. The pictorial and textual material will be interrogated for the (de-)thematization of the four categories of difference: gender, class, body/disability, race as well as their intersectional entanglement. In a micro-linguistic fine analysis, the linguistic (re-)production of possible experiences of difference will be examined on the basis of the three analysis heuristics: invocation, self-statements, biographical experiences. Embedded in and engaging with contemporary discourses of art and special education, this work aims to transform research findings on experiences of difference/collage/artists for those same disciplines. The perspective of Hannah Höch as an artist has so far been a research desideratum with a deeper focus on the analysis of body/disability and gender; the present study addresses this very issue and thus also shows transdisciplinary connectivity to Gender and Disability Studies."
Description: "Die vorliegende Dissertation untersucht das Verhältnis Collage – Differenzerfahrungen – Künstler:Innen.
