    Notizen: Abstract The mechanically unstable situation of a heavy Bingham fluid resting on top of a light Bingham fluid in an inclined closed-ended pipe can be stabilised if the fluids have sufficiently large yield stresses. This paper focuses on determining the yield stresses that are sufficient to keep the fluids statically stable for a given fluid density difference, pipe diameter and pipe inclination. The results are applicable to a broad class of practically observable flows. This situation provides an idealised model for the oilfield process of plug cementing.

    Notizen: Abstract The onset of steady Bénard-Marangoni convection in two horizontal liquid layers of electrically conducting immiscible fluids subjected to a uniform vertical magnetic field and temperature gradient is analysed by means of a combination of analytical and numerical techniques. The free surface can be either deformable or nondeformable and the interface between the fluids is always assumed to be flat. The effect of the lower layer on the critical values of Rayleigh, Marangoni and wave numbers for the onset of steady convection is investigated. When the free surface is nondeformable, the critical parameters for the onset of pure Marangoni convection are increased, whereas for the onset of pure Bénard convection they are decreased compared to the single-layer model. The results for a single-layer and for two-layers are qualitatively similar for Bénard-Marangoni convection when the free surface is deformable. All disturbances can be stabilized with sufficiently strong magnetic field when the free surface is nondeformable. If the free surface is allowed to deform and gravity waves are excluded, then the layers are always unstable to disturbances with sufficiently small wave number with magnetic field. Inclusion of gravity waves has a stabilizing effect on certain disturbances of small wave number in the presence of weak or moderate magnetic field.

    Notizen: In this paper we propose a parallel diagonal iteration process for solving a low-order implicit Runge-Kutta method of Lagrange type. The resulting scheme can be regarded as a parallel singly diagonally implicit Runge-Kutta (PSDIRK) method and it is strongly A-stable when the classical linear test model is used. On a two-processor computer, this method requires the solution of two implicit relations (sequential time units) per step and per processor. We compare our method with some sequential and parallel methods from the literature for solving linear as well as non-linear stiff problems and semidiscretized convection-diffusion equations. The numerical experiments show the behaviour of our method with regard to the other methods. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notizen: This paper describes the incorporation of diffusive transport into the original semi-Lagrangian DISCUS algorithm for pure advection. An explicit treatment of diffusion is adopted following the approach used in the QUICKEST algorithm for advection-diffusion. The semi-Lagrangian treatment of the advection term relaxes the small time step restriction normally associated with Eulerian treatments of advection, but the Eulerian treatment of the diffusion term imposes conventional limitations on the scheme. Numerical experiments of advection-diffusion, however, indicate that DISCUS has advantages over the QUICKEST scheme for advection-diffusion in three key areas: stability, accuracy and computational efficiency. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notizen: A linear θ method is used in this paper to improve the stability of the standard time-domain BEM formulation. The time-stepping procedure is similar to that of the Wilson θ method; however, unlike in the FEM, where linear time variation of acceleration (for elastodynamic problems) is assumed, here linear time variation for both potential and flux (for scalar waves) is assumed in the time interval θΔt. A comparison between numerical results obtained from the standard formulation and from the linear θ method studied here shows the latter to be more stable than the former. The effect of varying θ for different values of time steps is also studied in this paper. Copyright © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notizen: The initial stability of femoral neck osteosynthesis provided by three self-reinforced poly-L-lactide (SR-PLLA) or three metallic cannulated screws was compared. A standard transverse subcapital osteotomy was created with a hand saw in 19 pairs of human cadaver femora. Two fixation methods were randomly used in each pair. Fixations were exposed to a progressive cyclic loading test to determine the deflection curves, the ultimate load-carrying capacity, and the total amount of load absorbed. One pair served as a pilot and two nonoperated pairs served as controls. The positioning of the three fixation screws, whether one screw proximally and two screws distally or vice versa, provided equal stability. Metallic fixation proved to be more stable than SR-PLLA fixation as the average maximum load-carrying capacity was 3400N for the metallic and 2600N for the SR-PLLA fixation. However, SR-PLLA screws showed sufficient fixation properties for considering clinical trials in Garden I-II femoral neck fractures in well cooperative patients. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Notizen: The Unsymmetric Lanczos Reduction method has been recently developed to reduce the size of a large-scale linear system which is the discretized form of a time-dependent partial differential equation problem with a large physical domain. This has been applied to solve the time-dependent advection-dispersion equation discretized by finite element or finite difference methods. However, the reduced system sometimes suffers time instability because of relocation of the approximate eigenvalues into the left half plane. This paper develops a method for stabilizing the reduced system while preserving the accuracy of the solution. The unstable eigenvalues are translated from the left half complex plane to the right half, leaving eigenvalues in right half plane unchanged. The results of numerical simulations of the synthetic and practical field contaminant transport problems show the efficiency and accuracy of this method. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notizen: Von Neumann stability analysis is performed for a Galerkin finite element formulation of Biot's consolidation equations on two-dimensional bilinear elements. Two dimensionless groups - the Time Factor and Void Factor - are identified and these quantities, along with the time-integration weighting, are used to explore the stability implications for variations in physical property and discretization parameters. The results show that the presence and persistence of stable spurious oscillations in the pore pressure are influenced by the ratio of time-step size to the square of the space-step for fixed time-integration weightings and physical property selections. In general, increasing the time-step or decreasing the mesh spacing has a smoothing effect on the discrete solution, however, special cases exist that violate this generality which can be readily identified through the Von Neumann approach. The analysis also reveals that explicitly dominated schemes are not stable for saturated media and only become possible through a decoupling of the equilibrium and continuity equations. In the case of unsaturated media, a break down in the Von Neumann results has been shown to occur due to the influence of boundary conditions on stability. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notizen: Application of the finite element method to Koiter's asymptotic postbuckling theory often leads to numerical problems. Generally it is believed that these problems are due to locking of non-linear terms of different orders. A general method is given here that explains the reason for the numerical problems and eliminates these problems. The reason for the numerical problems is that the postbuckling stresses are inaccurately determined. By including a local stress contribution, the postbuckling stresses are calculated correctly. The present method gives smooth postbuckling stresses and shows a quick convergence of the postbuckling coefficients. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notizen: In this paper a new method to compute the bifurcating branches for an elastic structure is presented. The method is based on the asymptotic-numerical method (ANM), that is a perturbation technique to solve problems in non-linear mechanics. Herein, we present a computing strategy to find the bifurcation points and the post-buckling branches in the framework of the ANM. Some examples are also given, which prove the effectiveness of the proposed method. A discussion of the results and of the open problems ends the paper. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notizen: In this work, the stress-point approach, which was developed to address tension instability and improve accuracy in Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) methods, is further extended and applied for one-dimensional (1-D) problems. Details of the implementation of the stress-point method are also given. A stability analysis reveals a reduction in the critical time step by a factor of 1/√2 when the stress points are located at the extremes of the SPH particle. An elementary damage law is also introduced into the 1-D formulation. Application to a 1-D impact problem indicates far less oscillation in the pressure at the interface for coarse meshes than with the standard SPH formulation. Damage predictions and backface velocity histories for a bar appear to be quite reasonable as well. In general, applications to elastic and inelastic 1-D problems are very encouraging. The stress-point approach produces stable and accurate results. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notizen: The Retarded Potential (RP) method, which is a boundary element technique and non-local in both space and time, is employed to discretize the fluid domain for the analysis of transient fluid-structure interaction problems. The retarded potential analysis program RPFS is coupled to the ABAQUS non-linear finite element code to form ABAQUS/RPFS. The standard RP is inherently unstable for time steps below a critical time step that is equal to the maximum distance in the fluid divided by the wave speed. A technique referred to as the Figueiredo method is used to convert the standard RP differential-delay equations for the fluid to simply delay equations, which are more stable. The Figueiredo approach extends the stability range of the standard RP by a factor of approximately 10-20, but this time step is still not small enough to be useful for analysis. Digital signal processing methods are used to further stablize the response of the fluid by removing the oscillating high-frequency noise in the time histories of the solution without introducing phase shifting or any significant damping. Stability of the coupled system is achieved by not extrapolating the structural accelerations. ABAQUS/RPFS is applied to both a rigid and elastic sphere subjected to a plane wave, and the results using the full time histories required are completely stable and quite accurate. With this procedure, the retarded potential method may yet prove to be a valuable analysis tool for transient fluid-structure interaction problems. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notizen: The paper investigates the accuracy and numerical stability of a class of wavelet Galerkin formulations on irregular domains. The method of numerical boundary measures is based upon a domain embedding strategy in which the irregular domain of interest is embedded in a larger domain having regular geometry. One advantage of the domain embedding method is that the boundary conditions on the larger, regular domain can be enforced in a straightforward manner, and the solution procedure can exploit the highly structured form of the resulting governing equations. The defining characteristic of this method is that the calculation of integrals along the irregular boundary are carried out using recently derived numerical boundary measures. In addition, the coercive bilinear forms characterizing the boundary value problem of interest must be calculated when restricted to the actual domain. In the case of wavelet Galerkin formulations, this calculation is accomplished with the three term connection coefficients that characterize the numerical boundary measure. The numerical stability and accuracy of the domain embedding procedure is compared to a newly developed wavelet-based finite element formulation.

    Notizen: A coupled Diffuse Element-Finite Element technique (DEM-FEM) for transient coupled-field analysis is proposed. The method combines the standard finite element method and a diffuse element technique (also called Element-Free Galerkin Method). The resulting approach takes advantage of the capabilities of both of these numerical techniques. For instance, different approximations can very easily be introduced for different fields. Moreover, the finite element mesh provides the cells for numerical integration of the DEM equations. The matrix formulation is derived from the variational formulation of the coupled equation system. The case of the coupled hydromechnical formulation of two-phase porous media is studied as an applied example. It is shown that, as only few pore-pressure nodes are necessary, the stability requirements for almost impervious porous media are satisfied. The precision and stability of the obtained formulation was studied, and using several examples, we investigated the role of different parameters on the accuracy of results, such as the influence domain, the weighting function type, or the number of nodes.

    Notizen: Abstract The behavior of a ship encountering large regular waves from astern at low frequency is the object of investigation, with a parallel study of surf-riding and periodic motion paterns. First, the theoretical analysis of surf-riding is extended from purely following to quartering seas. Steady-state continuation is used to identify all possible surf-riding states for one wavelength. Examination of stability indicates the existence of stable and unstable states and predicts a new type of oscillatory surf-riding. Global analysis is also applied to determine the areas of state space which lead to surf-riding for a given ship and wave conditions. In the case of overtaking waves, the large rudder-yaw-surge oscillations of the vessel are examined, showing the mechanism and conditions responsible for loss of controllability at certain vessel headings.

    Notizen: A simple explicit solution technique for problems in structural dynamics, based on a Modified Trapezoidal rule Method (MTM) approximation of the governing ordinary differential equations, is developed. The resulting conditionally stable explicit method (MTM) can be easily implemented and is extremely simple to use. Particular attention is focused herein on the concept of numerical stability of the proposed method for a free-vibrational response of a linear undamped Single-Degree-Of-Freedom system (SDOF). To examine the effectiveness, strengths, and limitations of MTM, error analyses for the natural period, the displacement, the velocity and the associated phase angle for a free undamped simple mass-spring system are derived and compared with Modified Euler Method (MEM) and the well-known Newmark Beta Method (NBM). Numerical examples for a SDOF system and a Multi-Degree-Of-Freedom (MDOF) system are presented to illustrate the strengths and the limitations of the proposed method.

    Notizen: Abstract The displacement of one fluid by another miscible fluid in porous media is an important phenomenon that occurs in petroleum engineering, in groundwater movement, and in the chemical industry. This paper presents a recently developed stability criterion which applies to the most general miscible displacement. Under special conditions, different expressions for the onset of fingering given in the literature can be obtained from the universally applicable criterion. In particular, it is shown that the commonly used equation to predict the stable velocity ignores the effects of dispersion on viscous fingering.

    Notizen: Abstract We present a model of heat and mass transfer in an unsaturated zone of sand and silty clay soils, taking into account the effects of temperature gradients on the advective flux, and of the enhancement of thermal conduction by the process of latent heat transfer through vapor flow. The motivation for this study is to supply information for the planned storage of thermal energy in unsaturated soils and for hot waste storage. Information is required on the possibility of significant drying at a hot boundary, as this would reduce the thermal conductivity of a layer adjacent to the boundary and, thus, prevent effective heat transfer to the soil. This study indicates the possibility that the considered system may be unstable, with respect to the drying conditions, with the occurrence of drying depending on the initial and the boundary conditions. An analysis performed for certain boundary conditions of heat transfer and for given soil properties, disregarding the advective flux of energy, indicated that there are initial conditions of water content for which heating will not cause significant drying. Under these conditions, fine soils may be better suited for heat transfer at the hot boundary, due to their higher field capacity, although their heat conduction coefficients at saturation are lower than those of sandy soils. At present, these conclusions are limited to the range of 50–80°C. Potential effects of solute concentration at the hot boundary are indicated.
