    Beschreibung: This is the Salmonid & Freshwater Fisheries Statistics for England & Wales 1992 produced by the National Rivers Authority (NRA) in 1994. This report is focused on the maintenance, improvement and development of fisheries of England and Wales. This report is the fourth compilation of salmon and migratory trout catch statistics for England and Wales published by the National Rivers Authority. For the years 1983-88, these statistics were published by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAFF), Directorate of Fisheries Research in their Data Report Series. Other than for rod catches, the 1992 data have been presented in a broadly similar format to those of 1991, Presentation of the rod data however has changed considerably due to the introduction in January 1992 of the first National Rod Fishing Licence. This report makes a general review of different catches: Northumbria, Yorkshire, Anglian, Thames, Southern, Wessex, South West, Severn-Trent, Welsh and North West.

    Beschreibung: This is the Wetland resource evaluation and the NRA's role in its conservation: Resource assessment report produced by the National Rivers Authority in 1995. This R&D document provides a strategy for the assessment of the wetland resource of England and Wales. As a first step the report defines wetlands in their UK context. The following working definition is suggested: Wetland is land that has (or had until modified) a water level predominantly at, near, or up to 1.5 m above the ground surface for sufficient time during the year to allow hydrological processes to be a major influence on the soils and biota. These processes may be expressed in certain features, such as characteristic soils and vegetation. The report also summarises a hydrotopographical classification of wetlands. The report then develops a strategy for the establishment of a wetland resource Inventory based on a geographical information system (GIS) as a means of storing and manipulating site data from across England and Wales.

    Beschreibung: This is the Wetland resource evaluation and the NRA's role in its conservation: Classification of British wetlands report produced by the National Rivers Authority in 1995. This R&D document provides a clear classification for wetlands in England and Wales. The classification incorporates many of the existing ideas on the subject but avoids some of the problems associated with other classifications. A two-layered 'hydrotopographical' classification is proposed. The first layer identifies situation-types, i.e. the position the wetland occupies in the landscape, with special emphasis upon the principal sources of water. The second layer identifies hydrotopographical elements, i.e. units with distinctive water supply and, sometimes, distinctive topography in response to this. This system is seen as an independent, basic, classification upon which it is possible to superimpose additional, independent classifications based on other features (e.g. base-status, fertility, vegetation, management etc.). Some proposals for such additional classifications are provided.

    Beschreibung: This report is the fourth collation of salmon and migratory trout catch statistics for England and Wales produced by the Environment Agency. For the years 1989-94 these statistics were published by the National Rivers Authority (NRA) and for the years 1983-88 by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Directorate of Fisheries Research, in its Data Report series. This report is designed to be a reference document of declared salmonid catches in England and Wales. Salmon stock assessment data including provisional catches, counter run estimates and some juvenile data are now published in an annual assessment for the International Council for the Exploitation of the Seas (ICES). The second report in this series was published jointly by the Environment Agency and the Centre for Environment, Fisheries & Aquatic Science (CEFAS) in April 1998 (Anon 1999).

The actions presented within this final Salmon Action Plan clarify the important issues and factors currently limiting the salmon stock on the river. The resolution of these issues should ensure that a sustainable salmon population will be maintained for future generations. The River Lynher salmon stock has suffered two periods of spawning target failure within the past ten years. This assessment can only be estimated and in this case is likely to be dependent on river flow and the availability of salmon to the rods as only rod catch is used in the compliance assessment.

These issues and actions follow on from the detailed analysis of the catchment, which is presented in the River Plym SAP Consultation document.The actions presented within this final Salmon Action Plan clarify the important issues and factors currently limiting the salmon stock on the river. The resolution of these issues should ensure that a sustainable salmon population will be maintained for future generations. The main objective of the River Plym SAP therefore, is to maintain, improve and develop the River Plym salmon stocks to a sustainable level that, on the basis of historic catch records, the catchment can clearly support. The River Plym has failed to pass its conservation limit since 1996, and the consultees felt very strongly that there were three major factors limiting the salmon stock of the River Plym.

    Beschreibung: This is the report on the Effect of Abstraction on Fish and Fisheries presented at the 24th IFM Annual Study Course, The Changing Face of Fisheries September 1993 at Cardiff.Water is abstracted from rivers for a wide variety of uses and causing potential for conflicts between abstracters, fisheries and conservation interests, especially during natural low flows. It looks at the potential effects that flow reduction has over various stages of salmonids at various stages of their life history. The flow at the time of smolt migration has been found to be positively correlated with the number of returning adults, and flow is considered to be one of the most important environmental factors inducing salmonids to enter fresh water and ascend rivers. The importance of time series data on fish stocks and angling success together with models which ultimately relate discharge to standing stock are discussed in relation to the setting up of Minimum Acceptable Flows.

The report pays attention on the external consultation of the River Fowey Salmon Action Plan (SAP). It is the 5th of 7 action plans that will be produced for salmon rivers managed by the Cornwall Area Fisheries, Recreation and Biodiversity Team. This strategy represents an entirely new approach to salmon management within the UK and introduces the concept of river-specific salmon spawning targets as a salmon management tool. The River Fowey SAP contains a description of the river catchment and highlights particular features that are relevant to the salmon population and the associated fishery. Notably, there are historic workings for copper and china clay and two significant potable supply reservoirs (Siblyback and Colliford) which have been constructed within the catchment during the past 35 years. The whole of the Fowey catchment is set at the highest water quality grading of RE1 and this standard is met in all reaches of the River Fowey and its tributaries.

    Beschreibung: This is the Kent estuary 1992 surveys: Summary of results produced by the National Rivers Authority in 1993. The report summarises routine and baseline water quality surveys carried out on the Kent estuary during 1992. Baseline surveys are designed to respond to regional, national, and European requirements. During 1992 baseline surveys were carried out in June and December. Unfortunately, in June, samples could only be taken from stations 3, 7 and 8. For ease of interpretation the results have been presented in graph form, including the maximum and minimum parameter concentration and the appropriate Environmental Quality Standards (EQS). The parameters measured in this survey were physical parameters (temperature, BOD, dissolved oxygen, Ph, salinity, conductivity); nutrients (ammonia, phosphate, and nitrate); metals (Mercury, Nickel, Arsenic, Cadmium, Chromium, Cooper, Boron, and Zinc) and organic compounds.

The counter data contained within this report covers the period of the commercial migratory salmonid net buy-back scheme and the implementation of the National Spring Salmon Byelaws. The fish counter at Gunnislake is a resistivity based system (Logie 2100A – Aquantic limited) and is installed in the fish pass on the Cornish bank of the River Tamar at the head of the tide. The minimum salmon count for 1999 was 2691. The run pattern observed for salmon and sea trout in 1999 was generally consistent with that of previous years. However, the total combined annual count of salmon and sea trout migrating upstream on the River Tamar in 1999 was 25% higher than the 5 year average (1994 - 1998).

The report presents the daily upstream counts of migratory salmonids on the River Fowey at Restormel Weir fish counting station (SX 107 613) in 2001. The counter data covers the period of the commercial salmonid net buy back scheme and the national spring salmon byelaws. These reduce the commercial netting season for salmon and sea trout to between 16 June and 31 August. The fish counter at Restormel is installed on a crump sectioned weir on the River Fowey. The fish counter is a resistivity based system and operates over all three channels of the weir. 2001 was a good year for large sea trout. The number of returning large sea trout was above average in April, May, June and July and equal to or higher than the previous recorded maximum in those months. The main run of small sea trout occurred at a similar time to previous years with the highest numbers of fish entering the Fowey during June and July.

Data contained within this report covers the period of the commercial migratory salmonid net buy-back scheme and the National Spring Salmon Byelaws (2 March- 15 June). The minimum upstream salmon estimate for 2007, over the period July 2007 to February 2008, was 796, which is the fifth highest recorded count over the past 13 years. The number of returning salmon in 2007 suggests a downward trend in numbers since 2004. The 2007 large sea trout count is similar to 2006. Overall, the number of fish returning is still low in comparison with the 10-year average. There was a noticeable decrease in the number of small sea trout returning compared to 2006 and the 10-year average. The Fish counter at Restormel suffered several faults.

Data contained within this report covers the period of the commercial migratory salmonid net buy-back scheme and the National Spring Salmon Byelaws (2 March- 15 June inclusive). The minimum upstream salmon estimate for 2005 (1046), over the period July 2005 to February 2006, was 20% lower than that recorded over the same period in 2004 (1301). However, this is the second highest count recorded over the past 11 years. The total sea trout count (10448) was 8% higher than 2004 (9608). The number of salmon and large sea trout was lower than average in 2005. However, the overall numbers of adult salmon and sea trout returning have been increasing year on year since 1997. This overall increase in the salmon and sea trout counts, together with the consistency of the numbers of fish returning over recent years suggests that measures designed to protect salmonid stocks in the River Fowey are working.

Data contained within this report covers the period of the commercial migratory salmonid net buy-back scheme and the National Spring Salmon Byelaws. The minimum upstream salmon estimate for 2008, over the period July 2008 to February 2009, was 938 and is the third highest recorded count over the past 14 years. The 2008 large sea trout count (482) shows a marked improvement in the number of returning fish when compared to 2007 (241). There was a significant decrease in the number of small sea trout returning in 2008 when compared to 2007 and the 10-year average.

    Beschreibung: This is the Proposed Environmental Quality Standards (EQS) for Nonylphenol in Water produced by the Environment Agency in 1997. The report reviews the properties and uses of Nonylphenol, its fate, behaviour and reported concentrations in the environment, and critically assesses available data on its toxicity and bioaccumulation. The information is used to derive EQSs for the protection of fresh and saltwater life as well as for water abstracted to potable supply.Nonylphenol (NP) is used extensively in the production of other substances such as non-ionic ethoxylate surfactants. It is through the incomplete anaerobic biodegradation of these surfactants that most nonylphenol reaches the aquatic environment in effluents, e.g. from sewage treatment works and certain manufacturing operations. It was explicitly stated by the Environment Agency that the EQS was to be derived for NP and not Nonylphenol ethoxylates. However, since NP is unlikely to be present in the aquatic environment in the absence of other nonylphenol ethoxylate (NPE) degradation by-products, the toxicity, fate and behaviour of some of these (i.e. nonylphenol mono- and diethoxylates (NP1EO and NP2EO), mono- and di-nonylphenoxy carboxylic acids (NP1EC and NP2EC) have also been considered in this report. In the aquatic environment and during sewage treatment, NPEs are rapidly degraded to NP under aerobic conditions. NP may then be either fully mineralised or may be adsorbed to sediments. Since NP cannot be biodegraded under anaerobic conditions it can accumulate in sediments to high concentrations.

This report describes the behaviour and transport of radionuclides in the environment, considers the impact of ionising radiation on wildlife, and makes recommendations on an approach for the Impact assessment of ionising radiation on wildlife for England and Wales. The assessment approach focuses on three ecosystems representative of those considered potentially most at risk from the impact of authorised radioactive discharges, namely a coastal grassland (terrestrial ecosystem); estuarine and freshwater ecosystems. The likely scale of the impact on wildlife is also assessed in light of a preliminary analysis based on this assessment approach. The report demonstrates the behaviour and transfer of radionuclides in a number of different ecosystem types. Particular emphasis is placed on exposure pathways in those ecosystems most likely to be impacted by the authorised discharges of radioactivity within England and Wales. The use of biomarker techniques is reviewed in the report, and their application to the study of exposure to multiple contaminants is discussed.

    Beschreibung: This is the report on Lakes – Classification and Monitoring, a strategy for the classification of lakes by the National Rivers Authority.This report describes a scheme for the assessment and monitoring of water and ecological quality in standing waters, greater than about 1ha in area, in England and Wales although it is generally relevant to Northwest Europe. Thirteen hydrological, chemical and biological variables are used to characterize the standing water body in any current sampling. Statistical testing on the chemical variables showed that at least six samples during a year would be needed to produce a representative sampling mean; but in this scheme the choice of variables minimizes logistic cost by not using boat sampling and time costs by not demanding extensive taxonomic work. Standing waters are classified in a state-changed system in which the contemporary values of the variables are compared with a reference baseline state and then placed in categories of percentage change from this baseline. The scheme is presently designed for use at about five year intervals on all lakes greater than 2ha area plus additional lakes of significant amenity or conservation interest.

This final Salmon Action Plan (SAP) for the River Fowey catchment has been produced after consideration of feedback from external consultation. It provides a list of the agreed issues and actions for the next five years to maintain and improve the River Fowey salmon stock. The actions presented within this final Salmon Action Plan clarify the important issues and factors currently limiting the salmon stock on the river. The resolution of these issues should ensure that a sustainable salmon population will be maintained for future generations. The main objective of the Fowey SAP therefore, is to maintain, improve and develop the Fowey salmon stocks to a sustainable level that, on the basis of historic catch records, the catchment can clearly support. Although the Fowey is passing its conservation limit, the consultees felt very strongly that there were two major factors limiting the salmon stock of the River Fowey- the overgrazing of Bodmin Moor and the use of the catchment for water supply by South West Water.

    Beschreibung: This is the River Lynher Salmon Action Plan Consultation document produced by the Environment Agency in 1998. The report pays attention on the external consultation of the River Lynher Salmon Action Plan (SAP). The River Lynher SAP follows that for the River Tamar and is the second of seven action plans that will be produced for salmon rivers managed by the Cornwall area fisheries department. This strategy represents an entirely new approach to salmon management within the UK and introduces the concept of river-specific salmon spawning targets as a salmon management tool. The River Lynher SAP contains a description of the river catchment and highlights particular features that are relevant to the salmon population and the associated fishery. The analysis of recent and historical catches of salmon on the River Lynher from both the rod and net fisheries indicated the fishery's reliance upon post 1 June salmon. Historically, annual salmon catches (both rod and net) on the River Lynher have been found to consist of a much higher proportion of pre 1 June (spring) salmon. Evidence is provided that illustrates the extent of the decline within this stock component since the early 1980s.

The minimum salmon count estimate was 497, and the 1999 upstream count for sea trout was 6590. The run pattern observed for salmon and sea trout in 1999 was generally consistent with that of previous years. Flows on average were half those of 1998 during September, October, and November.

This document is the third of a series of three R&D Notes produced as part of an integrated research programme addressing aspects of the NRA's role in wetland management and conservation. Chapter 1 considers the nature of the wetland resource and its definition. Chapter 2 presents the NRA's current legislative and policy framework relating to its role in wetland conservation. National and international legislation and agreements are considered, and particular attention is afforded to the potential implications of the 'Habitats Directive'. Chapter 4 presents key examples of operational casework involving wetlands. Differences in approach and external perceptions of the NRA's current and likely future role in wetland conservation are discussed within Chapter 5. Other issues highlighted in this report are: policy guidance required on NRA’s role in land drainage; standard of flood defence service for wetlands; cost-benefit analysis; strategies for halting and reversing the decline and degradation of wetland resource; and Catchment Management Planning.

This strategy represents an entirely new approach to salmon management within the UK and introduces the concept of river-specific salmon spawning targets as a salmon management tool. The River Plym SAP follows the format of those completed for the rivers Tamar, Lynher, Tavy, Camel and Fowey. It is the sixth of seven action plans that will be produced for salmon rivers managed by Cornwall Area. The River Plym SAP contains a description of the river catchment and highlights particular features that are relevant to the salmon population and the associated fishery. Notably, there are historic workings for china clay and a significant potable water supply at Burrator Reservoir. The main River Plym has been designated as River Ecosystem class 1 for its water quality objectives. This is the highest water quality target set for rivers. This standard has been met in all reaches of the main River Plym and River Meavy.

This final Salmon Action Plan (SAP) for the River Yealm catchment has been produced after consideration of feedback from external consultation. It provides a list of the agreed issues and actions for the next five years to maintain and improve the River Yealm salmon stock. The actions presented within this Salmon Action Plan clarify the important issues and factors currently limiting the salmon stock on the river. The resolution of these issues should ensure that a sustainable salmon population will be maintained for future generations. An attempt has been made to cost these actions, identify possible sources of funding and to provide a timescale for action. The 2003 upstream count for sea trout was 9913. Trap data for 2003 is consistent with historic trapping and net data in terms of the size split between salmon and sea trout stocks.

This report identified key rare and nuisance species of interest to the NRA and prioritised research needs to develop conservation strategies for these species. The NRA has in the past adopted a habitat maintenance and protection approach to conservation paying less attention at individual species. There is a risk that conservation based on a habitat management policy will no further the conservation of certain species. In addition, certain ‘nuisance’ species cause problems for conservation by having a negative impact on more valued species or ecosystems. Through the combination of the review of current legislation and literature and consultation with NRA staff, this project identified key rare and nuisance species of interest to the NRA and prioritised research needs to develop conservation strategies for these species.

    Beschreibung: This is the Restormel Fish Counter, Annual Report 2005 produced by the Environment Agency South West Region on March 2006. The report presents the upstream counts of migratory salmonids recorded on the River Fowey at Restormel weir fish counting station (SX 107 613) over the period March 2005 to February 2006 inclusive. Data contained within this report covers the period of the commercial migratory salmonid net buy-back scheme and the National Spring Salmon Byelaws (from 2 March to 15 June Inclusive). The minimum upstream salmon estimate for 2005 was 1046, this is the second highest count recorded over the past 11 years. The total sea trout count (10448) was 8% higher than 2004 (9608). This overall increase in the salmon and sea trout counts, together with the consistency of the numbers of fish returning over recent years suggests that measures designed to protect salmonid stocks in the River Fowey are working.

Data contained within this report covers the period of the commercial migratory salmonid net buy-back scheme and the National Spring Salmon Byelaws. The minimum upstream salmon estimate for 2008, over the period July 2008 to February 2009, was 938, which is the third highest recorded count over the past 14 years. The 2008 large sea trout count (482) shows a marked improvement in the number of returning fish when compared to 2007 (241). There was a significant decrease in the number of small sea trout returning in 2008 when compared to 2007 and the 10-year average. The fish counter suffered several faults equated to 12.5 days during this period.

The minimum upstream salmon estimate for 2010, over the period July 2010 to February 2010, was 1220. The fish counter at Restormel suffered from only one major period of unscheduled downtime during 2010/2011. This was due to a counter fault over the period 21 to 30 August 2010 and equated to 10 days of downtime.

This report was under the R&D Project, which it was initiated in 1995 to provide information on species of conservation value of particular relevance to the Environment Agency (then the National Rivers Authority, NRA), in relation to its activities affecting aquatic environments. Outputs comprise Species Action Plans (SAPs), practical management guidelines for Agency staff and third parties, and various research and survey outputs to improve the knowledge base on the status and ecological requirements of priority species. This R&D Technical Report provides an overview of the work undertaken, additionally identifying lessons to be learnt in the management of species-related research within the framework of the UK Biodiversity Action Plan. The process of species selection was initially based upon a wide ranging review of priority species of relevance to the then NRA, encompassing both highly threatened species and species that are relatively common but are at particular risk from Agency activities.

This report is focused on the Phase 1 of the Species Management in Aquatic Habitats, based on the Development of priority lists of rare and nuisance species for the National Rivers Authority (NRA). Certain ‘nuisance’ species cause problems for conservation by having a negative impact on more valued species or ecosystems. This project was initiated as part of a programme of research to develop strategies for the management of both rare and nuisance species. This project identified key rare and nuisance species of interest to the NRA and prioritised research needs to develop conservation strategies for these species. A combined provisional list of almost a thousand rare species, a priority list of 58 species of potential interest and a priority list of nine nuisance species was developed by a process of literature review and from suggestions by NRA conservation staff.

The minimum upstream sea trout estimate for 2011 was 10,022, which is the fifth highest count recorded in the last 17 years. The fish counter at Restormel had six periods of downtime due to counter faults which equated to 19 days of downtime overall. Fish counts were estimated for downtime caused by counter faults but not for weir cleaning due to the small numbers of fish involved.

A range of stand-alone outputs is being produced, comprising Species Action Plans, practical management guidelines for Agency staff and third parties, and various research outputs to improve the knowledge base on the status and ecological requirements of priority species. The species of conservation values are: water shrew, daubenton’s bat, Kingfisher, yellow wagtail, Grey wagtail, sand martin, reed bunting, dipper, marsh warbler, great crested new, spined loach, brook lamprey, river lamprey, sea lamprey, shining rams-horn snail, little whirlpool rams-horn snail, depressed river mussel, a freshwater pea mussel, native crayfish, and triangular club-rush. The process of species selection was altered during the course of the project by the report on biodiversity by the UK Biodiversity Steering Group (1995). Whilst still including species that were not particularly endangered but were greatly influenced by the activities of the Agency, the project addressed species on the ‘short’ and ‘middle’ priority lists of the Biodiversity report, particularly those for which the Agency had specific responsibilities.

    Beschreibung: This is the Effect of water quality on coarse fish productivity and movement in the Lower River Irwell and Upper Manchester Ship Canal: a watercourse recovering from historical pollution report produced by the Environment Agency in 2003. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of water quality upon coarse fish population dynamics in a lowland, urban watercourse. All of the research carried was undertaken in the lower River Irwell and upper Manchester Ship Canal, between February 1998 and December 2001. Of particular interest was the natural sustainability of the urban fishery given recent concern raised in the angling community over an apparent decline in coarse fish populations in lowland rivers. The research described in this report has concentrated upon the role of water quality in determining coarse fish population dynamics, and in particular: The impact of water quality upon fish growth and productivity; The impact of poor water quality and low dissolved oxygen concentrations upon fish distribution and movement; The impact of water quality upon the sexual development of fish.

    Beschreibung: The marine life industry in Florida is defined as the harvest of live marine specimens (fish andinvertebrate species including plants, live rock and sand, and small “critters”) for commercial use,primarily aquariums. This paper summarizes data collected on the industry since 1990, includingtotal landings, revenues, and trends over time. Regional analysis shows where the primary collectingareas are located in Florida. Seasonal analysis shows when the majority of landings occur within theyear. Statistics on the number of participants by type (i.e., collector versus wholesaler) provideinsight into the size of the industry. Trends are evaluated in terms of changes across the 9-yearperiod from 1990 to 1998. In general, the number of licensed collectors has increased substantially,landings of fish and animal invertebrates peaked in 1994, angelfish dominated the fish landings, liverock dominated the invertebrate landings, and the average landings per trip have remained relativelyconstant.     Beschreibung: A survey of marine life wholesalers was initiated in 1999 as a first step towards understanding thenature of Florida’s marine life industry, the demand for Florida products, and the need for changes inthe way the industry is regulated. Florida firms deal primarily in marine species and collect much oftheir own product. Wholesalers outside of Florida handle more freshwater species and purchase mostof their inventory, the majority from overseas suppliers. Dealers predict that the average firm sizewill continue to grow as the industry consolidates. Niche markets for eco-friendly product will gainmomentum. In Florida, marketing strategies should point to the high quality of Florida species withemphasis on the growing popularity of invertebrates. Wholesalers should look to provide buyers ofFlorida product with more consistent quantities throughout the year. Resource managers will bechallenged to find ways to protect over-harvested species without interfering with the collection ofabundant species while considering the effect of new regulations. (42pp.)

    Beschreibung: A brief analysis of the bsics of artificial reefs as well as the methods and techniques in use are provided. The need for clear objectives and the design of artificial reefs for long-term goals is emphasized. Several principles are established. First, artificial reefs must target the enhancement of biological and fishery production of the Cuban shelf. This principle introduces major changes in current concepts, which are bsed exclusively on the increase of catch per unit effort. Second, an adequate balance between fishing effort, refuge capacity, food availability and fish recruitment must be established. Therefore, the use of artificial reefs siwth many cavities as habitats for algae, invertebreates and fishes, in place of artificial reefs exclusively employed as fish aggregators, is discussed. A methodology for a national development program, including the materials, structures, reef configurations, quantities, and distributions is proposed. As a result of examinations of habitats on the four sections of the Cubman shelf, an area of 12,500 sq.km. is defined as adequate for artificial reefs and isolated refuges. Eight-hundred and fifty reefs, each one formed by 200 refuges, are proposed.     Beschreibung: The value of the natural resources of the White River Basin (Basin), AR isrecognized by the area's designation as a "Wetland of International Importance". TheBasin constitutes one of the Nation's largest remaining intact forested wetlandlandscapes, second only to the Atchafalya Basin. It supports the North Americancontinent's largest concentration of over-wintering mallard ducks, a world-class troutfishery, the last vestige of a big river fishery remaining in the Mississippi River Basin,and numerous threatened and endangered species. The continued viability of thiswetland ecosystem depends on the suitability of the hydrologic environment to theresident flora and fauna. Numerous modifications of the Basin hydrologic features in thepast century have seriously impaired the sustainability of these resources. The Basinwidealterations of hydrologic processes (e.g., impoundment and regulatory releases offlows and volumes in the upper reaches, navigational modifications of lower reaches, andconsumptive demands for agricultural use throughout) have affected the hydrology of thesystem profoundly. The result is highly regulated flows and stages, vastly alteredhydrologic patterns, over-stabilized water levels, and disruption of seasonal waterdistribution patterns. Given the critical nature of hydrology in regulating the structureand function of wetland ecosystems, the impacts have been devastating, particularly tothe critical bottomland hardwoods that support the Basin's fish and wildlife resources.To date these piece-meal, system-wide, hydrologic alterations have cornmutativelydegraded the habitat value of this resource for fish and wildlife in the Basin, and havelead to changes in their numbers and distributions. In spite of the enormous stakesinvolved, there has been no comprehensive characterization of the Basin hydrology.System alterations such as channel deepening, dam construction, water allocationplans, and flood control measures are currently pending. These projects will potentiallyhrther modify the hydrologic environments of the Basin, and no doubt require mitigationmeasures. In addition, there is genuine interest in restoring aspects of the Basin's historichydrologic regime within some set of reasonable limits. In order to proceed with thiseffort, the anticipated effects of these modifications and restorations on the Basin ecologyrequire thorough study of the area's historic hydrology, so that connectivity among Basinprecipitation patterns, flow fluctuations, and land use changes can be made. A basinhydrologic characterization is an initial component of this effort. The focus of this effortwas to determine and assemble the data set from which characterization of the hydrologicenvironments of the Basin using historic and recent water level, flow, (primarily byUSGS-WRD) at locations throughout the Basin could proceed.     Beschreibung: Loxahatchee can be grouped into three zones according to the patterns of change of treeislands observed from 1950 to 1991. 1 ) the edge ofthe refuge adjacent to the canals, 2) the eastern interiorof the refuge, and 3) the western interior ofthe refuge. The general trend is for tree islandsAlong the edge of the refuge to have decreased insize, number, and percent cover, while those on theinterior increased in size, nunber, and percentcover.Results from this study illustrate the importanceof flow magnitude as well as hydroperiodand depth in stucturing patterns of tree islandswithin this peat wetland. Restoration of historichydroperiods and depths without historic flow patternsmay not be sufficient to restore or maintainthe historic pattern and function of the system. (60 pages)

    Beschreibung: We present a new modeling method for use in large-scale physical systems, such as the Everglades ecosystem.The current work that has been done in the ATLSS (Across-Trophic-Level System Simulation) project-whichfocuses on simulating key Everglades system components-relies on code integration. While this represents anecessary first step in analyzing the dynamics of species within the Everglades, it falls short of true modelintegration. We have constructed a methodology called object-oriented physical modeling (OOPM), which allowsa comprehensive knowledge representation to be constructedfor large-scale systems. OOPM enforces theidea that an implementation ofcomputer code can be accomplished in an incremental fashion by starting with aconceptual model and progressing to more detailed models. During this evolutionary procedure, a minimal amountof code is written, since the emphasis is on developing the conceptual model so that it not only represents theintuitive aspects ofthe model, but is also executable. OOPM provides a kind of "blueprint" for ecologists, biologistsand hydrologists to communicate and integrate models effectively. (14 page document)

This scale of production isgreater than most research would require, but smaller than commercial production,hence the term meso-scale production. This manual will briefly describe the biology ofAcartia tonsa Dana that is relevant to culture, the culture methodology for meso-scaleproduction of their eggs and nauplii, the system components utilized in production, andhow to construct a few simple tools useful for this scale of production.     Beschreibung: This report describes and summarizes the results from a state-wide survey of Floridaresident saltwater anglers. The survey was designed to provide estimates of the economic valueanglers place on marginal changes in management of selected near-shore marine species.The Contingent valuation method was used to elicit angler willingness to pay for changesin management for redfish, seatrout , mullet, sheepshead, pompano. and king mackerel.Contingent valuation is a process in which respondents are presented with a detailed scenario thatdescribes an opportunity to express their willingness to pay for a proposed change in currentconditions. The process consists of three parts. First. the change in current conditions, or the"good" to be valued is described. Second, the payment method is described. The paymentmethod is usually closely related to typical methods of buying goods similar to the one to bevalued. Finally. the respondent is asked how much they would pay for the good described inthe scenario. A special saltwater fishing license stamp that would allow the holder to takeadvantage of the described management change was used as a payment mechanism. (PDF contains 147 pages.)

    Beschreibung: Work has begun on studying the factors responsible for productivityin the Florida springs, which are nearly constant temperature, constantchemical, steady state giant laboratories. Progress has been made on fiveaspects: qualitative description, quantitative description, completionof knowledge of chemical factors, measurement of productivity , developmentof productivity theory.Measurement of the primary productivity in Silver Springs and GreenCove Springs by two new methods: the raising of organisms in cages, and themeasurement of night & day differences in oxygen downstream agree roughly.Production in these springs is greater than previous production figures reportedfor marine, fresh water, and land areas. Instantaneous measures of production show large variations with season, time of day, cloud cover. Productionestimates range from 11,000 lbs per acre per year to 70,000 lbs. glucose peracre per year during daylight hours.Essential stability of the springs environment has been shown withrespect to temperature, phosphorus, and plant cover. A correlation of speciesnumber with lack of stability has been shown with insects. Quantitativestudies have shown very large plant base to pyramids of mass. Correlationof marine invasion with chlorinity has been shown. The essential aspects ofpH regulated phosphorus geochemistry in Florida have been outlined. Sometheoretical ideas on productivity have been evolved. Mapping of sessileorganisms in springs and taxonomic identification of dominants are halfcompleted. Plans for second six months include measurement of herbivoreand carnivore production rates and completion of food chain efficiencydeterminations in Silver Springs as a preparation for subsequentcomparisons between springs.     Beschreibung: The effect of productivity on species variety has been studied by countsof diatom species on glass slides at favorable and unfavorable stations withinSilver Springs. Species variety has been presented in a measure that is independentof sample size, "species per cycle". This measure is based on the linear increase of accumulated species with logarithmic increase of individuals counted, which has been found approximately true for many kinds of populations in many communities. Diatom productivity was measured by the rate of chlorophyll accumulation. The poor station accumulated diatoms and chlorophyll slowly and was characterized by a large species variety. There was little change after 79 days. The rich station accumulated diatoms and chlorophyll rapidly and was characterized by a small species variety that decreased for 93 days as the density of the population increased. These results indicated that species variet was decreased by conditions of high productivity possibly through the action of high densities and competition.Twelve new diurnal production curves were obtained including two more on Silver Springs and one each for 10 different Florida Springs. A shallow oligohaline spring possessed the highest productivity of 58.0 gm/m2/day; a shaded and anerobic spring possessed the lowest producvitiy of 0.66 gm /m2/day. Findings in further studies in Silver Springs indicated a two fold diurnal chlorophyll fluctuation in the pseudoplankton going downstream, photosynthetic quotients corresponding to carbohydrate production on winter or heavily clouded days, and higher quotients corresponding to protein production on sunny, summer days; evidences that bell jar estimates of respiration in flowing water communities lead to underestimates; recalculation of mean depth of plant beds leads to a 5% estimate of photosynthetic efficiency for Silver Springs (rather than 8%). Correlated with a 20% decrease in the discharge associated with widespread drought in 1954-55 the oxygen of the main boil dropped from 2.5 ppm to 1.7 ppm. A production measurement by the diurnal oxygen and carbon-dioxide curve method was made in a somewhat isolated "boat basin." Efficiency of production in this stationary, plankton containing water of Silver Springs origin was about 1%. Further evidence was obtained of nitrate increase in water flowing from anaerobic springs over blue-green algae. The area based chlorophyll of the benthic Silver Springs community was similar to that in forests and lakes of Europe. (63 pages)

    Beschreibung: Peeler crabs are simply hard shell blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus) that show signs of molting.The molting process, commercially called shedding, is when the hard shell is cast off and the new soft shellemerges. In the soft condition, the shell expands to a larger size before rehardening. Peeler crabs is the termgiven to blue crabs that are in a pre-molt stage. At least half thenation’s human-made marine reefs are estimated to be in Florida waters and high interestexists statewide among fishing, diving, governmental, economic and other stakeholders in theperformance of these structures and the habitats that they create. Further, the level andbreadth of activity in Florida makes it a bellwether, nationally and worldwide, for interestsconcerned with aquatic science, ecosystem management and environmental technology forhabitat restoration or creation.Recent developments in Florida have prompted increased interest and effort in “monitoring”of reefs. These include extensive studies and disseminating results by the academicresearch community and the advent of governmental funding for monitoring projects in Floridacounties. In response, this study was undertaken to gauge this growing field. Assessment of reefperformance—including evaluation of how well they meet objectives for which they werecreated—has been a neglected subject in many areas of the world. More immediate issues ofreef materials selection, siting and deployment usually take precedence in the short-term.A principal readership for this paper is the network of county-level organizations andindividuals whose largely independent efforts, taken as a composite, make up much of theFlorida reef “program.” Information presented here describes the extent and nature of reefmonitoring in Florida counties, how data are managed and aspects of communication aboutreefs.     Beschreibung: In November 1994, Amendment Three of theFlorida Constitution, otherwise known as the netban, was approved by voter referendum. Thisamendment made it unlawful to use entangling nets(i.e., gill and trammel) in Florida's waters. The useof other forms of nets, such as seines, cast nets, andtrawls, was restricted, but not totally eliminated.The primary species of finfish landed with entanglingnets included striped mullet, spotted sea trout,Spanish mackerel, sheepshead, pompano and bluefish.About two dozen species tend to school inshallow water which made the use of gill and trammelnets an efficient harvesting method. This fact sheet indicates some of the measured changes that have occurred.(3pp.)

    Beschreibung: Vacuum-packed Yellowfin tuna steaks were individually frozen in either liquid Freon or in an air storage freezer, and evaluated for keeping quality after 1, 3, and 6 months of frozen storage (-27OC). The resulting freezing rates were used to project the economic feasibility of a small scale commercial processing plant. Regardless of freezing method the vacuum-packed steaks demonstrated keeping quality comparable to fresh control samples handled as in normal distribution channels. The estimated cost to manufacture allowed sufficient profit at competitive selling prices to generate a rate of return of 132%. This would pay back the estimated cost of plant and equipment in less than one 6-month season of operation at full capacity (16pp.)

    Beschreibung: Florida Sea Grant, having been involved in the developnent of the Florida soft crab fishery since 1978, decided that an evaluation of the status of this fishery was necessary to determine to what extent Sea GrantExtension activities would be needed to further its development. To that end, this author, in cooperation with Florida Sea Grant marine extension agents and specialists, conducted a survey of the 1983 soft crab producers.Out of 28 identified blue crab shedding operations known to be producing soft shell crabs in 1983, 22 (78.6%) cooperated in filling out a fishery questionnaire which included sections describing their shedding facility,harvest methods, product types, production and sales data, and production costs. The reminder of this paper will be the findings of that survey. (12pp.)

    Beschreibung: A small but valuable live bait shrimp fishery has existed in Biscayne Bay since at least the early 1950s. In recent years there has been increasing pressure from recreational fishing and environmental groups to eliminate this fishery from the Bay because the fishing activity is generally thought to be deleterious to the environment and/or destructive to juvenile game fish.This study was initiated to update the existing knowledge of the bait shrimp fishery in Biscayne Bay and document historical trends in number of participants, fishingmethods, fishing area, seasonality, total catch, catch-per-unit-effort, disposition of the catch, and economics of the industry.     Beschreibung: Shrimp melanosis, commonly known as 'blackspot' is aharmless but objectionable surface dicoloration caused bypolyphenoloxidase enzyme systems which remain active duringrefrigeration or ice storage. In the early 1950's sulfitingagents, particularily sodium bisulfite was first introduced to prevent or inhibit melanosis, thus yielding a more valuable harvest (1). Such use of sulfites was 'prior sanctioned1 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1956 (2). More recent FDA decisions reaffirmed this practice, (3) but continuing regulatory scrutiny could restrict or eliminate the application of sulfite on shrimp. The regulatory action is prompted by an increasing concern for adverse 'allergic' reactions most common amongst hyper-(sulfite) sensitive asthmatics. Thus work was initiated to find alternatives to replace or reduce the amount of sulfites required to inhibitshrimp melanosis. This work would screen for possiblealternatives which would require subsequent verification with field tests and statistical evaluations. (21pp.)

    Beschreibung: The critical need to predict the turbidity in water due to fine-grained sediment suspensionunder wave action over mud deposits for sedimentation and erosion studies, as well assorbed contaminant transport, is well known. Since fall velocities of fine sediment particlesare very small, they can be easily transported by hydrodynamic flows such as waves andcurrents. The presence of these particles in the water column affects accoustic transmission,heat absorption and depth of the eutrophic zone (Luettich et al., 1989). Because these sedimentsalso have a strong affinity for sorbing nutrients and toxic chemicals, sediments whichhave been deposited on the bottom may function as a source of contaminants to the watercolumn if they are disturbed by eroding forces resulting, for instance, from wave action. Anoutstanding example of a water body for these problems is Lake Okeechobee, the largestshallow lake in Florida. This lake shows typical signs of artificial eutrophication mainly dueto increased phosphorus loading associated with the surrounding region. Resuspension of sediment at the bottom of Lake Okeechobee composed of fine-grainedmaterial has been examined. A sediment transport model was used to simulate likelytrends in the evolution of the vertical suspended sediment concentration profile resultingfrom wave action, and the corresponding eroded bed depth was calculated through massbalance. Requisite information on characteristic parameters and relationships related tofine sediment erodibility were derived from field sampling of bottom sediment in the lake,and through laboratory experiments using this sediment and lake water.     Beschreibung: Considerable research in recent years has been invested inthe basic biology, ecology, and fisheries of deep-water crabs,Family Geryonidae. These efforts have been concentrated off thesoutheastern United States and southwest Africa, following earlierwork from the Mid-Atlantic states of the U.S. to the CanadianMaritime Provinces. Species of primary interest have been thegolden crab, Chaceon fenneri, and the red crabs C. maritae and C.auinauedens. Only a fraction of recent data has been published.Yet, the many investigators and sponsoring agencies sought tofoster regional comparisons, to inform the commercial fishingindustry and resource agencies, and tp provide guidance for futureresearch investments.On January 19 and 20, 1989, an invited panel of scientists,fishermen, and Sea Grant Extension faculty met in Tampa, Floridato share their results, conclusions, and latest hypotheses.     Beschreibung: Based on a report by the Wakulla County Solid Waste Director (Appendix II),approximately 17% of the solid waste entering the county landfill each year iscomprised of processing wastes from the counties' 13 blue crab processing plants.Eleven of these plants were being serviced by Tri-county Refuse of Apalachicolafor $12.50/4 cubic yard container/pick-up. The other two plants were bringingtheir wastes to the landfill themselves in barrels.Overall, blue crab processing wastes require special handling during dailylandfill operations to reduce odors, mainly additional soil coverage. Also, dueto normal crab plant operations crab scrap waste is generally delivered to thelandfill late in the day making handling difficult before landfill closing time.As a result of these handling problems, blue crab processing wastes are presentlycosting an estimated 25% of the landfill operating budget per month during peakproduction months, April - November.     Beschreibung: The Cabo Rojo Salt Flats, at the southwestern tip ofPuerto Rico, provide important autumn stopover and winteringhabitat for migratory shorebirds. I studied the abundanceand distribution of shorebirds and their food resources atthis site during autumn of 1990 and 1991.Small calidrids (primarily Calidris pusilla and C.mauri) were the most abundant shorebirds at the salt flats.The maximum weekly counts of small calidrids in 1990 (2,690)and 1991 (3,532) occurred in mid October. Calidrids foragedprimarily in the Fraternidad lagoon system; roosting tookplace most often at the neighboring Candelaria Lagoon.The macroinvertebrate prey important to calidrids in theFraternidad system were Dasyhelea (Diptera), Trichocorixa(Hemiptera), and Artemia (Anostraca). Changes in invertebrateabundance coincided with fluctuations in salinity. (100 page document)

    Beschreibung: This report documents breeding numbers, reproductive success, and foragingdispersion of long-legged wading birds in the Water Conservation Areas (WCAs) of theEverglades during the first six months of 1993. Briefly, the 1993 spring had abnormallyhigh water and windy conditions throughout the season, and produced poor nesting effort,low to moderate nesting success, and low production of young. Some species, like WoodStorks and White Ibises, did not nest at all in the WCAs. Others, like Great Egrets andTricolored Herons, showed considerably tenacity under the extremely poor nestingconditions. The 1993 season provided a rare chance to record the reproductive responses ofwading birds during sustained high water conditions. (108 page document)
