    Beschreibung: The distinction between basic and applied research was central to twentieth-century science and policymaking, and if this framework has been contested in recent years, it nonetheless remains ubiquitous in both scientific and public discourse. Employing a transnational, diachronic perspective informed by historical semantics, this volume traces the conceptual history of the basic–applied distinction from the nineteenth century to today, taking stock of European developments alongside comparative case studies from the United States and China. It shows how an older dichotomy of pure and applied science was reconceived in response to rapid scientific progress and then further transformed by the geopolitical circumstances of the postwar era.

The book shows how oil shapes the space where it is extracted in every aspect and produces multiple uncertainties. The community members express these uncertainties using the metaphor of the time bomb. The book shows how they find ways to "live off the time bomb" by using mechanisms of short-term coping and long-term adaptation and thus, developing the capability to determine their lives despite the ever-changing challenges.

Between 20 March 2003 and 30 September 2017, more than 172,000 Iraqis resettled in the United States. This book explores the experiences of fifteen Iraqis who resettled in the US after 2003. It examines the long war against Iraq that began in 1991 and the decisions some Iraqis made to leave their homes and seek refuge in the United States. The book also delves into the possibilities for belonging and cultural exchange for this cohort of Iraqis and their political engagement with non-profit organizations, advocacy, and activism against the 2017 Travel Ban.

Peripheries at the Centre compares the experiences of schooling in Upper Silesia in Poland and Eupen, Sankt Vith, and Malmedy in Belgium — border regions detached from the German Empire after the First World War. It demonstrates how newly configured countries envisioned borderland schools and language learning as tools for realizing the imagined peaceful Europe that underscored the political geography of the interwar period.

    Beschreibung: Violent Becomings conceptualizes the Mozambican state not as the bureaucratically ordered polity of the nation-state, but as a continuously emergent and violently challenged mode of ordering. In doing so, this book addresses the question of why colonial and postcolonial state formation has involved violent articulations with so-called ‘traditional’ forms of sociality. The scope and dynamic nature of such violent becomings is explored through an array of contexts that include colonial regimes of forced labor and pacification, liberation war struggles and civil war, the social engineering of the post-independence state, and the popular appropriation of sovereign violence in riots and lynchings.

It looks at young men living in a Soninke-speaking village in Gambia who, although eager to travel abroad for money and experience, settle as farmers, heads of families, businessmen, civic activists, or, alternatively, as unemployed, demoted youth. Those who stay do so not only because of financial and legal limitations, but also because of pressures to maintain family and social bases in the Gambia valley. ‘Stayers’ thus enable migrants to migrate, while ensuring the activities and values attached to rural life are passed on to the future generations.

    Beschreibung: The Communist Party dictatorships in Hungary and East Germany sought to win over the “masses” with promises of providing for ever-increasing levels of consumption. This policy—successful at the outset—in the long-term proved to be detrimental for the regimes because it shifted working class political consciousness to the right while it effectively excluded leftist alternatives from the public sphere. This book argues that this policy can provide the key to understanding of the collapse of the regimes. It examines the case studies of two large factories, Carl Zeiss Jena (East Germany) and Rába in Győr (Hungary), and demonstrates how the study of the formation of the relationship between the workers’ state and the industrial working class can offer illuminating insights into the important issue of the legitimacy (and its eventual loss) of Communist regimes.

This is an analysis of the ways in which Haredi Jews negotiate healthcare services using theoretical perspectives in political philosophy. It is the first archival and ethnographic study of Haredi Jews in the UK and sits at the intersection of medical anthropology, social history and Jewish studies. It will allow readers to understand how reproductive care issues affect this growing minority population.

    Beschreibung: The book is the first systematic study of the beginnings of psychoanalysis on Polish lands in Galicia (Austria-Hungary) and Congress Poland (Russia) during the partitions of Poland in the years between 1900 and 1918. The birth of the movement was presented on a broad cultural background, as an element of the assimilation processes among Polish Jews. At the same time, Freud's and Jung's theories began to gain popularity in Polish medical, philosophical, artistic and literary circles. By 1918, over a dozen articles on psychoanalysis had been published in Polish scientific and philosophical journals. Freud himself was vitally interested in this process, sending Ludwig Jekels to Krakow in the role of – as he wrote – an "apostle" of his theory in the circles of the Polish intelligentsia.

    Beschreibung: Mit "Kolchosprosa" (kolchoznaja proza) und "Dorfprosa" (derevenskaja proza) greift die vorliegende Arbeit zwei im literarischen Leben der Sowjetunion entstandene Kategorien auf, die sich auf einander ablösende synchrone Schnitte im Evolutionsprozeß einer spezifischen literarischen Unterreihe beziehen. Die Grenze zwischen den beiden Schnitten entspricht ungefähr der Grenze zwischen den fünfziger und sechziger Jahren.

    Beschreibung: Drawing on a broad range of archival material from state and SED party sources as well as Stasi files and individual farm records along with some oral history interviews, this book provides a thorough investigation of the transformation of the rural sector from a range of perspectives. Focusing on the region of Bezirk Erfurt, the author examines on the one hand how East Germans responded to the end of private farming by resisting, manipulating but also participating in the new system of rural organization. However, he also shows how the regime sought via its representatives to implement its aims with a combination of compromise and material incentive as well as administrative pressure and other more draconian measures. The reader thus gains valuable insight into the processes by which the SED regime attained stability in the 1970s and yet was increasingly vulnerable to growing popular dissatisfaction and economic stagnation and decline in the 1980s, leading to its eventual collapse.

Zum einen ist eine Rekonstruktion der Urglagolica durchzuführen, was vor allem der Festlegung des ursprünglichen Zeicheninventars und des entsprechenden orthographischen Usus dient.     Beschreibung: For the first time, this book provides the global history of labor in Central Eurasia, Russia, Europe, and the Indian Ocean between the 16th and 20th centuries. It contests common views on free and unfree labor, comparing the latter to many Western countries where wage conditions resembled those of domestic servants. This gave rise to extreme forms of dependency in the colonies, not only under slavery, but also afterwards via indentured labor in the Indian Ocean and obligatory labor in Africa. Stanziani shows that unfree labor and forms of economic coercion were perfectly compatible with market development and capitalism, proven by the consistent economic growth that took place all over Eurasia between the 17th and the 19th centuries. This growth was labor intensive: commercial expansion, transformations in agriculture, and the first industrial revolution required more labor, not less.

    Beschreibung: The focus of the following work is the Russian author N.M. Karamzin (1766-1826), who is still known in Russia today for his sentimentalist narrative "Bednaja Liza" and the twelve-volume "Istorija gosudarstva rossijskogo". At the end of the 18th and in the first third of the 19th century, at the time of their creation, his works were widely read, Karamzin, as a sentimentalist writer as well as a historiographer, had some success in the contemporary reading public. The work is chronological, beginning with Karamzin's early work, Pisma Russkogo putešestvennika (1791-92), then examining a selection of sentimentalist narratives that appeared in the period 1792-1803 and ending with Istorija gosudarstva rossijskogo ", whose first eight volumes were published in 1818. Examined are the different discourses, which are assigned to the text categories travel writing, sentimentalistische povest 'and historiography, and others. in terms of narrative linkage.
    Beschreibung: Im Mittelpunkt der folgenden Arbeit steht der russische Autor N.M. Karamzin (1766-1826), der heute in Rußland noch durch seine sentimentalistische Erzählung "Bednaja Liza" sowie die zwölfbändige "Istorija gosudarstva rossijskogo" bekannt ist. Ende des 18. und im ersten Drittel des 19. Jahrhunderts, zur Zeit ihres Entstehens, wurden seine Werke viel gelesen, hatte Karamzin sowohl als sentimentalistischer Schriftsteller wie als Historiograph einigen Erfolg beim zeitgenössischen Lesepublikum. Die Arbeit geht chronologisch vor, sie beginnt mit dem Frühwerk Karamzins, den "Pisma russkogo putešestvennika" (1791-92), untersucht dann eine Auswahl der sentimentalistischen Erzählungen, die in der Zeit von 1792-1803 erschienen, und endet mit der "Istorija gosudarstva rossijskogo" , deren erste acht Bände 1818 veröffentlicht wurden. Untersucht werden die unterschiedlichen Diskurse, die den Textgattungen Reisebriefe, sentimentalistische povest' und Geschichtsschreibung zuzuordnen sind, und zwar u.a. im Hinblick auf narrative Verknüpfung.

    Beschreibung: Deportations by train were critical in the Nazis’ genocidal vision of the “Final Solution of the Jewish Question.” Historians have estimated that between 1941 and 1944 up to three million Jews were transported to their deaths in concentration and extermination camps. In his writings on the “Final Solution,” Raul Hilberg pondered the role of trains: “How can railways be regarded as anything more than physical equipment that was used, when the time came, to transport the Jews from various cities to shooting grounds and gas chambers in Eastern Europe?” This book explores the question by analyzing victims’ experiences at each stage of forced relocation: the round-ups and departures from the ghettos, the captivity in trains, and finally, the arrival at the camps. Utilizing a variety of published memoirs and unpublished testimonies, the book argues that victims experienced train journeys as mobile chambers, comparable in importance to fixed locations of persecution such as ghettos and camps.

Did they have ‘the best of all possible worlds’? Or were they caught in a double bind? Sylvia Plath’s letters tell of her delighted sense of life opening before her as a ‘college girl’. Her poetry, however, tells of anguish, of reaching for distant goals. Drawing on interviews, surveys, reunion books, letters, biographical and autobiographical writing from both American and Australian women, this cultural history argues that the choices that faced educated women in that time led to the revolution of the late 1960s and 70s. Something had to give. There are lessons here for today’s young women, facing again conflicting expectations. Is it possible, they ask, to ‘have it all’?

    Beschreibung: Die vorliegende Arbeit setzt sich mit dem Begriff Utopie bei dem russischen Schriftsteller Velimir Chlebnikov (1885 - 1922) auseinander. Das Thema wird allerdings nicht unter dem Aspekt der Sozialutopie, sondern unter dem Gesichtspunkt des utopischen Denkens behandelt. Hier sind vor allem die Überlegungen Chlebnikovs zur Zahl, bzw. zur Zeit als Ausdruck eines zyklischen Verlaufs der Geschichte, sowie die Versuche, eine transkulturelle Sprache ("zvesdnyj jazik", "zaum") zu schaffen im Zusammenhang mit dem Konzept des "budetljanstvo" als ein utopisches Konzept einer zukünftigen Welt von Bedeutung.

The history of the diamond-cutting industry, characterized by a long-standing Jewish presence, is discussed as a social history embedded in the international political economy of its times; the genesis of the industry in Palestine is placed on a broad continuum within the geographic and economic dislocations of Dutch, Belgian, and German diamond-cutting centers. In providing a micro-historical and interdisciplinary perspective, the story of the diamond industry in Mandate Palestine proposes a more nuanced picture of the uncritical approach to the strict boundaries of ethnic-based occupational communities.

    Beschreibung: La Dordogne, anciennement Périgord, est située dans l’historiographie en périphérie de la zone des familles souches du Sud-Ouest. Le mode de transmission et de reproduction familiale permet de comprendre comment s’organise la famille et comment se nouent les liens en son sein. Outre les relations juridiques, économiques, patrimoniales, est-il possible d’approcher les relations d’ordre affectif? L’étude porte sur les familles ayant vécu dans le village de Saint-Léon-sur-l’Isle, entre 1780 et 1839. Une lecture très fine des sources, notamment des actes notariés, met en évidence les logiques de comportement et leur évolution pendant une période de bouleversements qui malmènent les équilibres familiaux. Elle livre également un aperçu de l’intimité familiale, celle du couple en particulier.

    Beschreibung: Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, Übersetzungen und Nachdichtungen deutscher Gedichte zu untersuchen, die zur Zeit des Illyrismus entstanden sind, d.h. in den dreißiger und vierziger Jahren des vorigen Jahrhunderts, also zur Zeit der Entstehung der kroatischen bürgerlichen Gesellschaft und ihrer Literatur. In dieser Arbeit mußten drei Fragen beantwortet werden: warum, was und wie in Kroatien zu jener Zeit übersetzt wurde.

    Beschreibung: Gegenstand der vorliegenden Arbeit ist das sowjetrussische Autorenlied, eine Gattung, die trotz der Tatsache, daß die ihr zuzurechnenden Werke gesanglich vorgetragen werden, eindeutig der Dichtung angehört. Der erste Teil (A) stellt einführend die notwendigen biographischen Daten zu den hier im Mittelpunkt stehenden Gedichtsängern und das Textmaterial im Hinblick auf seine Gattungsspezifik in aller Kürze vor. Im Rahmen des eher literatursoziologisch orientierten zweiten Teils (B) wird die Stellung des Autorenlieds innerhalb der sowjetischen Kultur beschrieben, unter Akzentuierung der Zusammenhänge zwischen der Entstehung dieser Gattung und den sehr speziellen kulturellen Bedingungen in der Sowjetunion der späten 50er Jahre.

    Beschreibung: Das früheste Zeugnis der slavischen christlichen Literatur ist in drei Handschriften überliefert, die in der deutschen Slavistik unter dem Namen Freisinger Denkmäler (Fris) bekannt sind. Es handelt sich um zwei Beichtgebete, Freising I und Freising III, und um eine Bußpredigt, Freising II, die in der wissenschaftlichen Forschung die Bezeichnung "Adhortatio ad poenitentiam" erhalten hat. In einer systematischen Untersuchung des christlich-religiösen Wortschatzes der Freisinger Denkmäler, die man trotz erheblicher Unterschiede als eine Einheit betrachtet, soll gezeigt werden, mit welchen Mitteln und welchem Einfluß die sprachliche Aufnahme des christlichen Gedankengutes erfolgte.

    Beschreibung: During the Middle Ages, rulers from different regions aspired to an idea of imperial hegemony. On the other hand, there were rulers who deliberately refused to be «emperors», although their reign showed characteristics of imperial rule. The contributions in this volume ask for the reasons why some rulers such as Charlemagne strove for imperial titles, whereas others voluntarily shrank from them. They also look at the characteristics of and rituals connected to imperial rule as well as to the way Medieval empires saw themselves. Thus, the authors in this volume adopt a transcultural perspective, covering Western, Eastern, Northern and Southern Europe, Byzantium and the Middle East. Furthermore, they go beyond the borders of Christianity by including various caliphates and Islamic «hegemonic» rulers like Saladin.

    Beschreibung: Ein Aspekt des Kontaktes zwischen zwei Sprachen ist der Bereich der Entlehnung "im Sinne von Überführung eines Zeichens/Wortes aus einer Sprache in eine andere" (Lewandowski 1976, II: 415). Gegenstand der Untersuchung ist das Lehnwort, ein, "aus einer anderen Sprache übernommenes, eingebürgertes und dem eigenen Sprachsystem angepaßtes Wort". Die besonders in der Germanistik verbreitete Diskussion der Frage "Lehnwort" oder "Fremdwort" soll hierbei nicht berücksichtigt werden. Das Ziel ist es, eine genau definierte Gruppe von Lehnwörtern (vgl. hierzu den Abschnitt "Definition des Untersuchungsgegenstandes") auf die Regelmäßigkeiten ihrer phonologischen Übernahmemechanismen hin zu untersuchen.

    Beschreibung: The Nazis’ persecution of the Jews during the Holocaust included the creation of prisoner hierarchies that forced victims to cooperate with their persecutors. Many in the camps and ghettos came to hold so-called “privileged” positions, and their behavior has often been judged as self-serving and harmful to fellow inmates. Such controversial figures constitute an intrinsically important, frequently misunderstood, and often taboo aspect of the Holocaust. Drawing on Primo Levi’s concept of the “grey zone,” this study analyzes the passing of moral judgment on “privileged” Jews as represented by writers, such as Raul Hilberg, and in films, including Claude Lanzmann’s Shoah and Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List. Negotiating the problems and potentialities of “representing the unrepresentable,” this book engages with issues that are fundamental to present-day attempts to understand the Holocaust and deeply relevant to reflections on human nature.

Trifonov sah es als die wichtigste Aufgabe der Literatur wie auch als seine persönlich wichtigste Aufgabe als Schriftsteller an, "das Phänomen Leben und das Phänomen Zeit darzustellen".

    Beschreibung: Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist es festzustellen, ob es zwischen den Präfixen der ableitenden Verben und den von ihnen abgeleiteten Substantiven semantische Zusammenhänge oder sogar Gesetzmäßigkeiten gibt, die Ableitungen einer bestimmten onomasiologischen bzw. wortbildenden Kategorie zumindest tendenziell begünstigen, ob nicht die spezifische Funktion zumindest tendenziell begünstige, ob nicht die spezifische Funktion und Bedeutung der Präfixe eine Prädisposition zur Ableitung bestimmter onomasiologischer bzw. wortbildender Kategorien darstellt, d.h. ob nicht eine Affinität von den Präfixen der ableitenden präfigierten Verben zu den von ihnen abgeleiteten Substantiven besteht.
