    Description: To date, critical analysis of the EMU project has largely been advanced from the centre-right spectrum of British politics. Comparable questions from the centre-left have failed to find a coherent voice. Although, the European fault-line cannot be characterized as a neat Left-Right issue there are noticeable divisions in opinion across British business, the trade union movement and within the Labour Party.     Description: Drawing upon recent progress in development economics and political science, the book provides fresh analysis of the Caucasus and Central Asia (CCA) countries transition to a market economy by tracing the impact of natural resource endowment. The book examines the synergies between energy-rich and energy-poor states and highlights the practical consequences of both well-managed and poorly-managed deployment of energy. Featuring contributions from prominent specialists on resource-driven economies, the book argues that unless CCA elites change the way in which they deploy natural resource, revenues regional development will fall short of its potential with possible disastrous consequences. The contributors apply the experience of the developing market economies to demonstrate that the region still holds considerable potential to become an important, stable supplier of raw materials and a source of industrial demand to the global economy. However, the CCA is equally likely to become a threat to the global economy as a consequence of the misuse of energy revenues to promote the interests of predatory political elites.

    Norms and Practices in Contemporary Rural Vietnam : Social Interactions between Authorities and People (2021)

    Description: Since the 1980s, while trying to maintain political stability and territorial integrity, the Vietnamese state has strongly moved towards the transformation of a centrally-planned economy to a more market-oriented model, in which private, foreign and joint-venture businesses are increasingly becoming the key pillars of the national economy. Another key aspect of the Đổi Mới's agenda was a fundamental shift in the party-state's foreign relations policy toward a normalization of Vietnam's diplomatic and trading relations with China, the United States, and other countries since the early 1990s. Over twenty years after the Đổi Mới renewal renovation, Vietnam has been praised by various domestic and international institutions for its “impressive” achievements in socio-economic development and poverty reduction and for its gradual liberalization and market diversification, coupled with its commitment to equality. Consequently, this has changed the relationship between the party-state and society in a number of fields, including the control of agricultural land and other forms of natural resources. Such transition marks a great change in our scholarly understanding of Vietnam. It has opened the door for intellectual exchange between academics and has resulted in a great amount of research and new knowledge/publications in different languages about various domains regarding Vietnamese society, including the relationships between the state and society at different levels and in various sectors or geographic areas. Among them, studies like those of Kerkvliet, Fforde and others, have developed the “everyday politics approach”, which examines social interactions on an everyday action basis. This approach “from below” has given a fresh impetus to the study of social relations in Vietnam. However, our observations regarding academic research show that besides a number of rich ethnographic studies, there are many analyses from different social science disciplines that give a generalized view of trends of development and change in Vietnamese society over the past decades with limited field data. This means that research projects based on first-hand data from longer periods of fieldwork and qualitative investigations are still inadequate. As a result, we are suggesting that more field-based research be carried out in order to enhance and promote our understanding of Vietnam, especially its processes of socio-political changes.

    Description: Le Viêt Nam est devenu en janvier 2007 le 150e membre de l’OMC (Organisation mondiale du commerce). Depuis le lancement du « Doi Moi » (Renouveau) intervenu fin 1986, ce pays connaît une croissance économique très rapide, parmi les plus élevées du monde. Le processus d’intégration accélérée du Viêt Nam à l’économie mondiale après plusieurs décennies de guerre et d’isolement, dont l’adhésion à l’OMC représente une étape supplémentaire, joue un rôle majeur dans le développement du pays. Grâce à la croissance, la pauvreté a reculé très rapidement. Même si le Viêt Nam fait partie des pays en développement les moins inégalitaires selon les comparaisons internationales, les inégalités sociales sont en augmentation depuis le début du processus d’ouverture. En quoi l’adhésion du Viêt Nam à l’OMC, qui intervient peu après celle de la Chine (2001), est-elle susceptible d’influer sur le sentier de croissance de l’économie vietnamienne et sur son intégration à l’économie mondiale ? Quel peut être son impact sur l’emploi et sur le processus de restructuration de la population active ? Au-delà, quel impact sur les inégalités et la pauvreté ? Toutes ces questions sont au cœur des débats de politique économique au Viêt Nam. La Table ronde consacrée à « L’adhésion du Viêt Nam à l’OMC ; l’impact sur la croissance et l’emploi », co-organisée en janvier 2008 par l’Ambassade de France au Viêt Nam et l’Académie des Sciences Sociales du Viêt Nam dans le cadre du Fonds de Solidarité Prioritaire (FSP) en Sciences sociales, cherchait à apporter des premiers éléments de réponse à ces questions un an après l’adhésion du pays à l’OMC. Cette synthèse comprend les quatre articles présentés par des chercheurs vietnamiens et français lors de cette Table ronde.     Description: This annotated bibliography of selected literature on Olney's three7square (Scirpus olneyi Gray )compiled basically for two reasons: 1) to assist a task force in its pursuit of an explanation for the substantial reduction in marsh acreage at the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in Dorchester County, Maryland, and 2) to serve as the author's foundation for the initiation of ecological research on this species as partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Botany Department of the University of Maryland. Both purposes are directly related in that the Author's research will be of use to the task force, along I with its other technical information and research results, in under-standing and possibly correcting the marshland loss problem at the Refuge.
