Description: Biosatellite B was launched from Cape Kennedy, Florida, on a two-stage DELTA launch vehicle at 6:04 p.m. on 7 September, 1967. Approximately nine minutes later the 435 kg spacecraft biological laboratory was placed into a satisfactory 315 km near-circular earth orbit, successfully separated from the launch vehicle's second stage and was designated Biosatellite II. The scientific payload consisting of thirteen selected general biology and radiation experiments were subjected to planned, carefully controlled environmental conditions during 45 hours of earth-orbital flight. The decision was made to abbreviate the scheduled 3-day mission by approximately one day because of a threatening tropical storm in the recovery area, and a problem of communication with the spacecraft from the tracking stations. Highest priority was placed on recovery which was essential to obtain the scientific results on all the experiments. The operational phase of the mission came to a successful conclusion with the deorbit of the recovery capsule, deployment of the parachute system and air recovery by the United States Air Force. The 127 kg recovery capsule was returned to biology laboratories at Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii, for disassembly and immediate inspection and analysis of the biological materials by the experimenters. It was evident immediately that the quality of the biology was excellent and this fact gave promise of a high return of scientific data. The environmental conditions provided to the experimental material in the spacecraft, provisions for experimental controls, and operational considerations are presented as they relate to interpretation of the experimental results.

Description: Four female and two male chimpanzees were secured in various positions on a Daisy Decelerator and subjected to forces ranging from 54 to 180 G. It was found that forces in excess of 54 G may rupture the tympanic membranes and cause subepithelial hemorrhages in the middle ear. The majority of cases showed proteinaceous material, with or without cells in the petrous air spaces. When exposed to forces above 119 G, there was engorgement and often rupture of the pericarotid venous plexus. When supine, distortion of both superior and posterior semicircular canals was found. With forces in excess of 54 G, the cupulae of the cristae ampullaris were either elevated or destroyed. The hair processes were also often broken off. The otolithic membranes, especially of the maculae utriculi were also elevated or otherwise distorted and the saccule was often partially collapsed. In several instances, there was an overabundance of a proteinaceous substance in the lumina of the vestibular apparatus and in the cochlear ducts with their associated scalae. In half the cases, the cochlear duct was narrowed by the depression of the vestibular membrane. Although there seems to be considerable individual variation in ability to withstand these forces, neither age, sex nor weight appear to directly influence the results. The possible sources for the materials found both in the air cells and labyrinth are discussed.

Description: This paper describes the principal findings of the first United States manned orbital space flight in light of the flight mission. Consideration is given to the coordinated tracking network, recovery forces and to the spacecraft and its several functional systems. These include mechanisms for heat protection, escape maneuvers, spacecraft control, power supply, communications, life support and landing. A few difficulties encountered in the flight and deviations from the planned sequence are described. Craft preparation, aeromedical studies, flight plan and particularly flight observations--including the color, light, horizon visibility by day and by night, cloud formations and sunrise and sunset effects are given in some detail. The general conclusion from the MA-6 flight is that man can adapt well to new conditions encountered in space flight and that man can contribute importantly to mission reliability and toward mission achievement through his capacities to control the spacecraft and its multiple systems contribute to decision making and adaptation of programming as well as to direct exploratory and experimental observations.

Description: The studies of Klatzo, Miquel, Tobias and Haymaker (1961) have shown that one of the earliest and most sensitive indications of the effects of alpha-particle irradiation on rat bran is the appearance of glycogen granules mainly in the neuroglia of the exposed area of the brain. Periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) positive, alpha-amylase soluble granules were demonstrated within 12 hr after irradiation, preceding by approximately 36 hr the first microscopically detectable vascular permeability disturbances, as shown by the fluorescein labeled serum protein technique. These studies suggested that the injurious effects of alpha-particle energy were on cellular elements primarily, according to the physical properties and distribution of the radiation in the tissue, and that the vascular permeability disturbances played a secondary role in pathogenesis. The purpose of this study was to correlate the histochemical observations on glycogen with a quantitative assessment of the glycogen in the irradiated brain tissue. It is felt that such a study may contribute to the understanding of radiation injury at the molecular level. A practical aspect of this problem is that the information on biological radiation effects due to accelerated particles from the cyclotron source, is employed in this study, is applicable to radiation from cosmic particles both in free space and entrapped in the Van Allen belts.

Description: Work during the initial six months of this program has proceeded along three lines: (1) technical development of blood flowmeter instrumentation: (2) surgical considerations related to special problems of chronic implantation of flowmeter probes: (3) study of the relationship between levels of blood flow and organ activity. Principal engineering effort has been focused on the fundamental phenomena operative in the flowmeter probe and on probe design. Two probes have been constructed and a third is nearing completion. A previously unrecognized source of zero drift has been discovered and corrected. has been designed, assembled, tested and successfully employed in work on the several probes. A significant innovation which has been introduced is the use of a transformer coupled input for suppression of unwanted common mode signals. New low noise transistor amplifiers with characteristics suitable for space vehicle packaging are being developed. Linearity of the present apparatus has been found to extend at least into the near turbulent flow region. Attention has been directed to the two vascular beds of physiologic interest that present particular problems with regard to chronic implantation of flowmeter probes, the myocardium and the liver. Surgical techniques have been perfected that will permit myocardial and liver blood flow measurement. Two groups of animals have successfully undergone surgery and await the implantation of probes. Studies of the relationship between organ blood flow and levels of physiologic activity have been initiated. The first organ system studied was the heart, For the first time autoregulatory mechanisms have been demonstrated within the myocardial vascular bed which rapidly and precisely maintain coronary blood flow at a level i n keeping with the magnitude of cardiac work, Following a summary statement of the status of the program, the work performed is described, A financial review of expenditures incurred and a proposal for future funding are appended,
