Notizen: A modified PLS algorithm is introduced with the goal of achieving improved prediction ability. The method, denoted IVS-PLS, is based on dimension-wise selective reweighting of single elements in the PLS weight vector w. Cross-validation, a criterion for the estimation of predictive quality, is used for guiding the selection procedure in the modelling stage. A threshold that controls the size of the selected values in w is put inside a cross-validation loop. This loop is repeated for each dimension and the results are interpreted graphically. The manipulation of w leads to rotation of the classical PLS solution. The results of IVS-PLS are different from simply selecting X-variables prior to modelling. The theory is explained and the algorithm is demonstrated for a simulated data set with 200 variables and 40 objects, representing a typical spectral calibration situation with four analytes. Improvements of up to 70% in external PRESS over the classical PLS algorithm are shown to be possible.

Notizen: Simulation of lithographic processes uksing novolac/diazonaphthoquinone resists has become widespread over the past 15 years. Several refinements to the original Dill model have been made to account for experimentally observed behavior. Models have also bee extended to cover other resist chemistry, including electron beam resists, chemically amplified resists and surface-imaging approaches. While these models are not yet mature, useful insight to the chemical mechanisms and processing can be gained through their use.

Notizen: A new monotonic scheme for the approximation of steady scalar transport is formulated and implemented within a collocated finite-volume/pressure-correction algorithm for general turbulent flows in complex geometries. The scheme is essentially a monotonic implementation of the quadratic QUICK interpolation and uses a continuous and compact limiter to secure monotonicity. The principal purpose is to allow an accurate and fully bounded, hence stable, approximation of turbulence convection in the context of two-equation eddy viscosity and Reynolds stress transport modelling of two- and three-dimensional flows, both subsonic and transonic. Among other benefits, this capability permits an assessment to be made of the adequacy of approximating turbulence convection with first-order upwind schemes in conjunction with higher-order formulations for mean-flow properties - a widespread practice. The performance characteristics of the bounded scheme are illustrated by reference to computations for scalar transport, for a transonic flow in a Laval nozzle, for one separated laminar flow and for two separated turbulent flows computed with a non-linear RNG model and full Reynolds stress closure.

Notizen: In this paper we discuss the orthogonal expansion of data matrices and its application to mapping and modelling. Two new methods, modified optimal discriminant plane (MODP) for mapping and order Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization (OGSO) for modelling, are proposed and examples are given.

Notizen: An evaluation of some numerical methods for turbulent reacting flows in furnace-like geometries is carried out. The Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations and the two-equation k-∊ model together with either finite-rate or infinite-rate reaction models are solved numerically. Either single- or multiple-step reactions together with the ‘eddy dissipation concept’ (EDC) are used to model reacting flows with finite reaction rates. The numerical scheme is finite difference based, together with a multi-grid method and a local grid refinement technique. These methods have been used to calculate the combustion of propane in a single- and multiple-burner configurations. In the former case, the sensitivity of the solution to variations in some model parameters (determining the reaction rate) and numerical parameters (mesh spacing) has been studied. It is noted that different dependent variables exhibit different levels of sensitivity to the variation in model parameters. Thus, calibration and validation of models for reacting flows require that one compares the most sensitive variables. For engineering purposes, on the other hand, one may calibrate and validate models with respect to the most relevant variables. Our conclusion is that since sensitivity of the temperature distribution is relatively mild, one can still use EDC-like methods in engineering applications where details of the temperature field are of minor importance.

Notizen: An organized microtubular cytoskeleton was discovered in the cytoplasm of Xenopus laevis oocytes. The microtubules were observed in 10- to 30-m̈m cryostat sections by indirect immunoperoxidase labeling using an antibody to tubulin. A gradual extraction of cells with a nonionic detergent was essential for good penetration of the antibody into the cells. In the cytoplasm of all previtellogenic oocytes, a dense network of criss-crossed long microtubules was associated in a basket-like structure surrounding the mitochondrial mass. At the beginning of vitellogenesis, the network meshes enlarged, while clusters of mitochondria migrated, in close association with microtubule bundles. At the beginning of vitellogenesis, the reorganization of the microtubular network, mostly in the vegetal hemisphere, occurred during the segregation of the mitochondrial populations. Reorganization is characterized by (1) a temporary enlargement of the network and close association of mitochondrial clusters with microtubular bundles, and (2) a progressive organization of a ring-shaped microtubular structure in the crown elaboration area. It is hypothesized that these modifications of the microtubular cytoskeleton contribute to the maintenance of cell shape and the polarized organization of the cell.
