In einem Zeitalter, das geprägt ist von kulturellem und sozialem Wandel, bleibt Muße zwar auf ihren klassischen Ursprung bezogen, verändert sich aber doch und wird vom aristokratischen Privileg zu einem fixen Bestandteil des bürgerlichen Lebens. Die in diesem Band analysierten Beispiele von Muße reichen von erbaulicher Lektüre und spiritueller Praxis bis zum hedonistischen gesellschaftlichen Vergnügen. Muße wird als Gattungsmerkmal und in ihrer semantischen Ambiguität beleuchtet.

In Oberschlesien kamen besondere Verhältnisse hinzu, wie etwa die Deutsche Volksliste sowie die Eingliederung Oberschlesiens in das Deutsche Reich. Konrad Graczyk hat alle Tätigkeitsbereiche des Sondergerichts Kattowitz erforscht. Die Quellenbasis bildeten Archivalien aus deutschen sowie polnischen Archiven.

    Description: Als aus dem Griechischen übersetzter Lehrdialog ist der lateinische Asclepius ein wichtiger Textzeuge des Hermetismus, einer geistigen Bewegung, die aus der Begegnung von Griechen und Ägyptern erwuchs und im 1. bis 4. Jahrhundert n. Chr. blühte. Ihr namengebender Lehrer ist Hermes Trismegistos. Im Asclepius belehrt er seinen Schüler Asclepius über die Natur Gottes und seiner Schöpfung und über die Stellung des Menschen in der Welt. Eingebunden ist ein apokalyptischer Passus, der den Untergang Ägyptens voraussagt. Der vorliegende Band enthält den lateinischen Text, eine Übersetzung mit Kommentar und sechs Aufsätze, die den Asclepius und den Hermetismus im Blick auf die ägyptisch-griechische Misch-Kultur ihrer Entstehungszeit, die platonische Philosophie, die Tradition apokalyptischer Literatur und die Nachwirkung in Mittelalter und Renaissance untersuchen. Text und Übersetzung einer fragmentarisch überlieferten koptischen Parallelversion sind beigefügt.

    Description: This book is a collection of ethnographies of transnational migration and border crossings in Asia. Interdisciplinary in scope, it addresses issues of mobility and Diaspora from various vantage points. Unique to this volume is an emphasis of studying globalisation from below, privileging the narratives and views of "people on the move" - or the transnational underclass - and their sense of belonging to places and communities. The collection is further distinguished by its focus on the sources of authority and the social configurations that are created in the intersections between legality and illegality across Asia. Though previous studies on transnational flows have deconstructed the notion of nation-states as having fixed political boundaries, and have engaged in spaces beyond the nation-states, seldom has an entire region, Asia, been privileged in one integrated volume. We emphasize hitherto marginalized debates that have significant policy relevance. Other than a serious academic interest from lecturers and students, we are confident that book will be of significant interest for development practitioners and NGOs.

    Description: O tium ist einer der schillerndsten Begriffe der lateinischen Sprache. Sein Bedeutungsspektrum umfasst zahlreiche ambivalente Komponenten, die es erschweren, seine Bedeutung zu fassen. Häufig wird otium im Deutschen mit "Muße" übersetzt, doch gleichbedeutend sind die beiden Begriffe keineswegs. Hiervon ausgehend werden als Ergebnisse einer semantischen Studie die grundlegenden Bedeutungskomponenten von otium herausgearbeitet und sein Bedeutungsspektrum strukturiert beschrieben. Dabei nimmt Franziska C. Eickhoff das gesamte semantische Feld von otium in den Blick und arbeitet die Bedeutungskomponenten heraus, die allen Verwendungsmöglichkeiten als Kernbedeutungen gemeinsam sind. So skizziert sie mit Ansätzen der kognitiven Semantik das mentale Konzept von otium und vergleicht es mit dem Konzept von Muße.

    Description: In der zweiten Hälfte des 4. Jahrhunderts erfand ein unbekannter Autor einen Briefwechsel zwischen Seneca und Paulus. Die vierzehn kurzen Briefe, acht vom Philosophen, sechs vom Apostel, sind in sehr schlechtem spätantikem Latein geschrieben und weitgehend inhaltslos. Ihr Ziel ist es, mittels eines Austauschs von freundschaftlichen Billetts, wie er unter den Intellektuellen der Spätantike üblich war, Seneca zum Freund des Paulus zu machen und so das hohe Ansehen Senecas in der spätantiken lateinischen Theologie apostolisch zu sanktionieren. Diese Fiktion war sehr erfolgreich und regte im Laufe der Geschichte immer wieder zu Spekulationen über das Verhältnis zwischen Stoa und Christentum an. Dieser Band bietet eine neue Übersetzung des Briefwechsels auf der Basis der neuesten kritischen Edition, versehen mit einer Einleitung, Erläuterungen und Testimonien. Ferner werden zwei wenig bekannte Texte aus dem Umfeld des Briefwechsels abgedruckt, erstmals übersetzt und erläutert: ein angeblicher Brief des Mordechai an Alexander den Großen aus einer Fassung des Alexanderromans und ein Brief Senecas über Hochmut und Götterbilder, eine christliche Apologie aus dem 5. Jahrhundert. Die Essays behandeln zentrale Probleme des Verhältnisses zwischen Stoa und Christentum (Gottesbild und Ethik) sowie die Seneca-Rezeption vom Mittelalter bis in die frühe Neuzeit.

Contributions by distinguished practitioners and critics of conceptual history from Europe and America illustrate both the distinctiveness and diversity of the genre. The first part of the book is devoted to the origins and identity of the field, as well as methodological issues.     Description: Peace operations became the core focus of many Western armed forces after the Cold War. The wish amongst political and military leaders during the 1990s to hold on to the classical identity of the armed forces as an instrument of force made them pursue a strict separation between military operations and the civilian aspects of peacekeeping, such as policing, administrative functions, and political and societal reconstruction. In his book Soldiers and Civil Power, Thijs Brocades Zaalberg argues that this policy failed to match up to reality. Supporting civil authorities, and at times even substituting them (de facto military governance), became the key to reaching any level of success in Cambodia, Somalia, Bosnia and Kosovo. As a result of the false segregation between the civilian and the military domain, this was accomplished mostly by improvisation and creativity of commanders who probed for the limiting boundaries of their original mandate by reaching ever further into the civilian sphere.     Description: The Qur'ān, emphasizing ritual purity and the role of Jesus as giver of God's positive law, preserves aspects of an earlier Jesus movement that most Christian groups diluted or rejected. The Didascalia Apostolorum, a late ancient church order, records a significant number of the laws promulgated in the Qur'ān, but does not fully endorse them when it comes to purity. Likewise, the Didascalia' legal narratives about the Israelites and about Jesus, as well as the legal and theological vocabulary of the Syriac (Eastern Christian Aramaic) version of the Didascalia, recurrently show kinship with the Arabic Qur'ān, amplifying the apparent affinities between the two texts. The Qur'ān, however, is not "based" on the Didascalia in any direct way; detailed comparison of the two documents illustrates the absence of textual influence in either direction. Both texts should rather be read against the background of the practices and the oral discourse shared by their respective audiences: a common legal culture. In this volume, Holger M. Zellentin offers new insights into Late Antique Judaism and Christianity, into the continuity of Judaeo-Christian law and narrative within Jewish and Christian mainstream communities past the fourth century, and into the community that the Qur'ān first addressed. Understanding how the Qur'ān parts ways with contemporaneous forms of Christianity and Judaism, both in the initial and in subsequent phases of the internal development of its legal culture, allows for a more precise appreciation of its message.

    Description: A social revolution has taken place in Europe. Women's employment patterns changed drastically the last decades. But they are still different across Europe. Welfare state scholars often presume that diversity and change in women's employment across Europe is based on financial (dis) incentive structures embedded in welfare states. This book shows, by in depth analyses of women's (and men's) employment and care patterns as well as child care services, taxation, leave schemes and social security in four different welfare states (the UK, the Netherlands, Denmark and Belgium) that this logic does not hold. A mother is not primarily the homo economicus welfare state scholars tend to presume. 'to work or to care 'is above all a moral predicament. What explains better the differences in Europe is to place care centrally and analyse welfare states as cultural agents. In the case of caring and paid employment, welfare states send culturally-defined moral images of good-enough caring in the form of ideals of care. An ideal of care implies a definition of what is good care and who gives it. These ideals of care are embedded in welfare states and their regulations, laws and implementation processes. Each welfare state promotes specific ideals of care. Cultural explanations downplay the role of the state too much. Culture, as is shown, is located within rather than outside the welfare state. The welfare state is not only a notary drawing contracts between the state and citizens or a merchant connecting supply and demand, but also a priest. This book shows, by studying care policy in welfare states, that social policy has an impact on women's and men's division of labour and care. In this book, leading historians and social scientists analyze and compare a variety of settlement processes in past and present migration to Western Europe. Identifying general factors in the process of adaptation of new immigrants, the contributors trace social changes effected by recent European immigration, and the parallels with the great American migration of the 1880s-1920s. The history of migration to Western Europe and the way these migrants found their place in the receiving societies, is not only essential to understand the way nations deal with newcomers in the present, but also constitutes a highly interesting laboratory for different paths of integration now and then. By analyzing and comparing a wealth of settlement processes both in the past and in the present this book is both a bold interdisciplinary endeavor, and at the same time the first attempt to identify general factors underlying the way migrants adapt to their new surroundings, as well as how societies change under the influence of immigration. The chapters in the book both look at specific groups in various periods, but also analyses the structure of the state, churches unions and other important organized actors in Western European nation states. Moreover, the results are embedded in the more theoretical American literature on the comparison of old and new migrants. All chapters have an explicit comparative perspective, either by comparing different groups or different periods, whereas the general conclusion ties together the various outcomes in a systematic way, highlighting the main answers to the central questions about the various outcomes of settlement processes.     Description: This scholarly study throws a new light on the Roman impact on religious structures in Republican Italy. In the last four centuries BC, Italy went through immense changes. The Apennine and Adriatic areas were originally inhabited by various 'Italic' tribes and characterised by a specific non-urban societal organisation, in which cult places had a pivotal function. From the fourth century BC onwards the area was gradually incorporated by Rome, profoundly altering its geopolitical make-up. The author not only investigates the changing social and political function of cult places in non-Roman Italic society, he also highlights the importance of cult places and religious rituals for new Roman communities in the conquered areas. This research thus opens new perspectives on the issue of the 'religious romanisation' of Italy by arguing for a strong Roman impact also in non-urbanised areas. Tesse Stek bases his study on the analysis of archaeological, literary and epigraphic evidence from rural cult places in Central and Southern Italy, including field work on the Samnite temple of S. Giovanni in Galdo.     Description: The history of kings and queens has always appealed to popular imagery. Monarchy is also a central theme to classic surveys of political history. The present volume approaches the relation between imagery and authority of the monarchy from a cultural historical angle. The authors focus on the different discourses produced since the Middle Ages aiming at the symbolic construction of royal power in Western Europe, as well as at its subversion. The history of monarchy is not a linear process from sacralization to banalization. Throughout premodern, modern and postmodern times, the mystification and demystification of the monarch remain inextricably intertwined. Peter Philipp Riedl untersucht innerhalb dieses Rahmens einer temporären Freiheit von beruflichen Verpflichtungen konkrete Ausprägungen urbaner Muße, die in der Italienischen Reise insbesondere aus Verona, Padua, Venedig, Rom, Neapel und Palermo geschildert werden. Übergänge von Aktivität und Passivität, von durchaus anstrengender, aber selbstbestimmter Arbeit und Genuss werden ebenso analysiert wie unterschiedliche Muster kontemplations- und erlebnisorientierter Muße. Ergänzt werden diese Überlegungen durch Interpretationen von Formen narrativer Muße in Das Römische Carneval, poetischen Inszenierungen der Raumzeitlichkeit von Muße in den Römischen Elegien sowie Evokationen lyrischen Flanierens in den Venezianischen Epigrammen.

    Description: Pottery made in the Aegean during the Late Bronze Age has been found widely distributed in many parts of the Mediterranean. At some four hundred sites outside Greece, Mycenaean dinner and storage vessels, as well as some figurines have been discovered. As such, this class of archaeological artifacts constitutes one of the main sources by which to study Mycenaean trade and interregional contact. However, the role of pottery in international exchange during this period is not properly understood. That role depended on the patterns of consumption in the societies importing Mycenaean pottery. In this book, such patterns of consumption are investigated for the three areas with the largest amounts of Mycenaean pots: the Levant, Cyprus and Italy. For each of these areas, three sites have been selected for a detailed analysis of the cultural contexts of Mycenaean pots on a local level. Variations and similarities between these sites form the basis for a discussion of the cultural significance of this class of material in the region as a whole. The variations in the cultural significance of Mycenaean pottery in these areas show that the meaning of archaeological artifacts depends on the contexts in which they were used, discarded and rediscovered. Amsterdam Archaeological Studies is a series devoted to the study of past human societies from the prehistory up into modern times, primarily based on the study of archaeological remains.     Description: One of the main challenges in labour relations in Europe is the ongoing decentralisation of collective bargaining from national and sectoral levels to company levels. Decentralisation might be an answer to business needs in competitiveness and organisational flexibility. However, it risks erosion of collective bargaining structures, more inequality in employment conditions and fragmentation in trade unions’ powers. Based on recent qualitative research, this book shows high varieties across European countries and economic sectors in degrees, forms and impacts of decentralisation. The authors explore, in interdisciplinary and multi-level perspectives, continuity and change in regulating and practicing collective bargaining in France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain and Sweden. In cross-country comparisons, company case studies in manufacturing and retail show the divergent effects of national regimes and social partners’ power resources on trade unions’ strategies and influence in company bargaining.

    Description: How did the breakdown of Roman rule in the Iberian Peninsula eventually result in the formation of a Visigothic kingdom with authority centralised in Toledo? This collection of essays challenges the view that local powers were straightforwardly subjugated to the expanding central power of the monarchy. Rather than interpret countervailing events as mere ‘delays’ in this inevitable process, the contributors to this book interrogate where these events came from, which causes can be uncovered and how much influence individual actors had in this process. What emerges is a story of contested interests seeking cooperation through institutions and social practices that were flexible enough to stabilise a system that was hierarchical yet mutually beneficial for multiple social groups. By examining the Visigothic settlement, the interplay between central and local power, the use of ethnic identity, projections of authority, and the role of the Church, this book articulates a model for understanding the formation of a large and important early medieval kingdom.

In the Renaissance, an era of epistemic fractures, when the clash between the 'new science' (Copernicus, Galileo, Vesalius, Bacon, etcetera) and the authority of ancient texts produced the very notion of modernity, the extended and expanding geography of ancient Rome becomes, for Shakespeare and the Elizabethans, a privileged arena in which to question the nature of bodies and the place they hold in a changing order of the universe. Drawing on the rich scenario provided by Shakespeare's Rome, and adopting an interdisciplinary perspective, the authors of this volume address the way in which the different bodies of the earthly and heavenly spheres are re-mapped in Shakespeare's time and in early modern European culture. More precisely, they investigate the way bodies are fashioned to suit or deconstruct a culturally articulated system of analogies between earth and heaven, microcosm and macrocosm. As a whole, this collection brings to the fore a wide range of issues connected to the Renaissance re-mapping of the world and the human. It should interest not only Shakespeare scholars but all those working on the interaction between sciences and humanities.

Dit vraagt om nieuwe antwoorden, om een heroriëntatie op het buitenlandbeleid. Het rapport wordt op 30 november namens de regering in ontvangst genomen door de minister van Buitenlandse Zaken, dr. U. Rosenthal. Het rapport stelt vast dat de internationale betrekkingen radicaal van karakter zijn veranderd. De vertrouwde afbakening tussen binnen- en buitenland vervaagt steeds verder, met name in Europa. Een groot deel van de Nederlanders ervaart dit evenwel nog anders. Tegelijkertijd neemt hun onzekerheid over de positie van Nederland in de wereld toe, mede door de recente financiële crisis. Het WRR-rapport bepleit een strategischer aanpak van de buitenlandpolitiek en schetst daarvoor een afwegingskader. Hiermee kunnen duidelijke keuzes worden gemaakt. Bijvoorbeeld door de nadruk te leggen op beleidsterreinen waarop Nederland sterk is en zich langere tijd wil profileren, zoals water, voedsel, of internationaal recht. De keuzes moeten ertoe bijdragen dat het profiel, de zichtbaarheid en de invloed van Nederland worden vergroot. Door in het buitenlandbeleid de samenhang tussen nationale en internationale belangen sterker te benadrukken, zal dat beleid in eigen land op ruimere steun kunnen rekenen, verwacht de WRR. De nieuwe aanpak zal er volgens de WRR toe leiden dat de algemene buitenlandstrategie een zaak van de gehele ministerraad wordt. Deze aanpak impliceert geen herijking of ontkokering van het buitenlandbeleid. Het vraagt een andere benadering, een andere houding. De Europese Unie is en blijft voor Nederland de meest dominante arena voor internationale samenwerking. Wie zijn doelen in het buitenlandbeleid wil bereiken, moet juist hier invloed uitoefenen, juist hier excelleren om zijn nationale belangen te realiseren. Volgens de WRR vergt dit een antwoord op de vragen: in wat voor Europa willen wij leven en hoe kunnen we onze invloed aanwenden om dit Europa naar vermogen mee vorm geven? Daarbij zou het passen wanneer ons land de praktijk van de ons omringende landen volgt en de minister-president daadwerkelijk tot eerstverantwoordelijke voor het EU-beleid aanwijst, aan het hoofd van het 'ministerie van Algemene en Europese Zaken'. Een strategischer buitenlandbeleid vraagt om een adequate uitvoering. Naast organisatorische aanscherpingen, kunnen bestaande instrumenten beter worden benut. Zo meent de WRR dat het postennet van diplomatieke vertegenwoordigingen in de wereld niet gebaseerd moet zijn op vaste reflexen, maar een afgeleide dient te zijn van een heldere strategie. Tevens zijn nieuwe vormen van samenwerking met andere landen noodzakelijk, waarbij ook nadrukkelijk ruimte en erkenning ontstaan voor samenwerking met niet-statelijke actoren zoals bedrijven, ngo's en belangenorganisaties. Kortom: de WRR bepleit in de buitenlandse politiek strategisch-inhoudelijk scherp te kiezen, te streven naar excellentie binnen Europa en een faciliterend medespeler te worden in de wereld van niet-statelijke actoren. Dabei wurden vor allem ihr Wirken auf den Bühnen des italienischen Musiktheaters des 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts oder die Rezeption der hohen Männerstimme auf das barocke Publikum beleuchtet. Die vorliegende geschichtswissenschaftliche Studie konzentriert sich hingegen auf die Personen als soziale Akteure in der Spätphase dieses Phänomens im 18. und frühen 19. Jahrhundert, wobei exemplarisch vier mitteleuropäische Fürstenhöfe (Wien, München, Dresden, Stuttgart) in den Blick genommen werden.In detaillierten Analysen der Lebenswelten des Hofes und der Residenzstadt fächert die Autorin auf, welchen hohen Stellenwert Kastratensänger innerhalb der höfischen Machtrepräsentation bis zum Schluss besaßen, wie sie sich innerhalb höfischer Anstellungsstrukturen immer wieder erneut positionierten, mit den Bewohnern der Residenzstädte interagierten und welche wichtigen Rollen sie gegenüber Familienangehörigen einnahmen.Insbesondere durch die Untersuchung des individuellen Umgangs mit dem vermeintlichen körperlichen Defizit kann sie zeigen, dass die Annahme, Kastraten seien in der Endphase ihres Bestehens grundsätzlich als defizitäre »verstümmelte Körper« wahrgenommen worden, revidiert werden muss. Auf diese Weise leistet die Autorin einen innovativen Beitrag zur Kultur- und Geschlechtergeschichte am Übergang von der Frühen Neuzeit ins 19. Jahrhundert.

    Description: Neue Techniken zur Informationsübermittlung befördern den Informationsaustausch. Das ist eine für das 20. und 21. Jahrhundert ganz selbstverständliche Feststellung. Genauso selbstverständlich gilt sie aber auch für das 16. Jahrhundert und die Frühe Neuzeit insgesamt. Ein allseits bekanntes Beispiel dafür ist die Verbesserung der Techniken des Buchdrucks durch die Verwendung beweglicher Lettern. Dies führte dazu, dass neue Medien entstanden und sich dauerhaft etablierten, wie z.B. die Flugschrift und die „Neue Zeitung“. Andere bereits bekannte Genera wie Lieder und Predigten erhielten durch die veränderte Kommunikationssituation eine neue Bedeutung in den Auseinandersetzungen der Zeit. Daraus ergaben sich vielfältige Chancen und Heraus­forderungen, denn die Nutzung dieser neuen Medien wie die Transformation bestehender Medienformate und deren flächendeckende Verwendung setzte politische, soziale, juristische und religiöse Veränderungsprozesse in Gang bzw. beförderte sie.Die Beiträge des Sammelbandes möchten diese neuen Kommunikationsformen und -methoden ebenso wie die Veränderungsprozesse für das 16. Jahrhundert ausleuchten. Dies geschieht, indem Wandlungs- und Transformationsprozesse durch die Nutzung bekannter sowie die Schaffung neuer Medienformate, der Umgang mit Meinungsvielfalt und der damit einhergehenden Pluralität an Deutungen des Zeitgeschehens sowie die Entstehung einer neuen Streitkultur und neue Ordnungsversuche analysiert werden.

    Description: Moeten vaker camera's worden toegelaten in de rechtszaal? Zou persoonlijke informatie over rechters, zoals lidmaatschap van een politieke partij, openbaar moeten worden gemaakt? Zouden rechters actiever stelling moeten nemen in het publieke debat? Is de stap naar een systeem van dissenting opinions wenselijk? De laatste jaren worden dit soort vragen veelvuldig opgeworpen. De rechtspraak moet immers transparanter, zo vinden velen. Burgers moeten beter kunnen zien en begrijpen wat zich in en om de rechtszaal afspeelt. Maar hoe ver moeten de luiken open en met welke middelen zou de rechtspraak dan moeten inzetten op transparantie? En: waar en waarom dienen grenzen aan meer openheid te worden gesteld? Oordelen rechters ander over transparantie, al naar gelang hun leeftijd of de sector waarin ze werkzaam zijn? Tot nu toe was nauwelijks bekend hoe de ruim tweeduizend rechters die Nederland telt over deze en andere vragen denken. Als onderdeel van een breder onderzoek heeft de WRR in de eerste helft van 2012 meer dan vierhonderd rechters uit alle sectoren van de rechtspraak geïnterviewd en geënquêteerd over allerhande kwesties in relatie tot transparantie. In dit boekje worden de resultaten van dit onderzoek gepresenteerd. Als er één ding duidelijk wordt, is het wel dat het onderwerp sterk onder rechters leeft. Een grote meerderheid van hen is voor méér transparantie. Daarbij maken ze nadrukkelijk een onderscheid tussen transparantie op het niveau van de individuele zaaksbehandeling en dat van het instituut rechtspraak. Als het gaat om de vraag hoe transparantie te organiseren, blijken de meningen overigens ook flink uiteen te lopen. Al met al geeft deze publicatie een rijk en gedetailleerd beeld van de overwegingen van rechters pro en contra meer transparantie.

Der historische Vergleich zeigt dabei auf, wann, wo und wie zivilgesellschaftliche Selbstorganisationen für beide Organisationen unter den Vorzeichen des Staatssozialismus möglich war.

    Description: This ground-breaking book brings theoretical perspectives from twenty-first century media, film, and cultural studies to medieval hagiography. Medieval Saints and Modern Screens stakes the claim for a provocative new methodological intervention: consideration of hagiography as media. More precisely, hagiography is most productively understood as cinematic media. Medieval mystical episodes are made intelligible to modern audiences through reference to the filmic - the language, form, and lived experience of cinema. Similarly, reference to the realm of the mystical affords a means to express the disconcerting physical and emotional effects of watching cinema. Moreover, cinematic spectatorship affords, at times, a (more or less) secular experience of visionary transcendence: an 'agape-ic encounter'. The medieval saint's visions of God are but one pole of a spectrum of visual experience which extends into our present multi-media moment. We too conjure godly visions: on our smartphones, on the silver screen, and on our TVs and laptops. This book places contemporary pop-culture media - such as blockbuster movie The Dark Knight, Kim Kardashian West's social media feeds, and the outputs of online role-players in Second Life - in dialogue with a corpus of thirteenth-century Latin biographies, 'Holy Women of Liège'. In these texts, holy women see God, and see God often. Their experiences fundamentally orient their life, and offer the women new routes to knowledge, agency, and belonging. For the holy visionaries of Liège, as with us modern 'seers', visions are physically intimate, ideologically overloaded spaces. Basierend auf vielfach erstmals ausgewerteten Quellen bearbeiten die Beiträge aktuelle Fragestellungen und Forschungshorizonte zur Interdependenz von sozialen, ökonomischen, kulturellen und religiösen Phänomenen im Karpatenbogen der Frühen Neuzeit, in dem die Osmanen der international dominante politische Faktor wurden. Transformationsprozesse wurden angestoßen durch Bevölkerungs- und Militärbewegungen, ökonomische, politische und religiös-mentale Umwälzungen, die zwischen opportunistischer Anpassung und rebellierendem Widerstand oszillierten und entsprechende politische Maßnahmen und Gegenreaktionen hervorriefen. Dabei wird die bislang geltende Forschungsmeinung zur Toleranzgeschichte Siebenbürgens in Frage gestellt und völlig neu bewertet.

    Description: Im Zentrum dieses Werkes stehen die französischen Schulen im Libanon in der historischen Zeitepoche der wachsenden französischen Einflussnahme von 1909 bis 1943. Anhand der verschiedenen politischen Regime des Osmanischen Reiches und des französischen Völkerbundmandats über den Libanon wird die These untermauert, dass diese Schulen immer stärker zu Instrumenten kolonialer Machtausübung wurden. Gleichzeitig zeigt Esther Möller, dass die Bildungseinrichtungen ebenso stark von der Akzeptanz und den Erwartungen der libanesischen Bevölkerung abhingen und von dieser zur kulturellen, religiösen und nationalen Identitätsstiftung genutzt wurden. Indem die Studie die komplexen Prozesse aufzeigt, welche die französische Zivilisierungsmission im Libanon begleiteten, leistet sie einen wichtigen Beitrag zur hochaktuellen Debatte um Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten und Grenzen von Zivilisierungsmissionen.

    Description: Switzerland likely has the most particular naturalization system in the world. Whereas in most countries citizenship attribution is regulated at the central level of the state, in Switzerland each municipality is accorded the right to decide who can become a Swiss citizen. This book aims at exploring naturalization processes from a comparative perspective and to explain why some municipalities pursue more restrictive citizenship policies than others. The Swiss case provides a unique opportunity to approach citizenship politics from new perspectives. It allows us to go beyond formal citizenship models and to account for the practice of citizenship. The analytical framework combines quantitative and qualitative data and helps us understand how negotiation processes between political actors lead to a large variety of local citizenship models. An innovative theoretical framework, integrating Bourdieu's political sociology, combines symbolic and material aspects of naturalizations and underlines the production processes of ethnicity.

    Description: Seit Beginn der Neuzeit expandierte das Moskauer Fürstentum gen Westen und Süden. Zu Zeiten der Romanov-Dynastie umfasste Russland weite Gebiete mit überwiegend nichtrussischer und konfessionell heterogener Bevölkerung. Nach den Teilungen Polens sowie der Eroberung des Kaukasus und Zentralasiens im 18./19. Jahrhundert erhielt das Zarenreich Kontrolle über weitere alte Kulturräume, die es im Zuge der Kolonialisierung ab Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts zu assimilieren versuchte. Diese Versuche erfolgten nicht zuletzt mittels der Sprachpolitik: Polnisch, Ukrainisch und Litauisch wurden verboten, das Russische sollte im Bildungs- und Behördenwesen im gesamten Imperium dominieren.

    Description: Der »Mauerfall« brachte die Frage der »Wiedervereinigung« überraschend rasch zurück auf die Tagesordnung der internationalen Politik. Dies galt auch für die österreichische Diplomatie und Politik, wie die 180 in dieser Edition erstmals veröffentlichten Dokumente zeigen. Das Verhältnis des neutralen Landes zu beiden deutschen Staaten hatte sich von 1949 bis 1989/90 kontinuierlich entwickelt. Zur Bundesrepublik bestanden aufgrund des Außenhandels und der Westorientierung Österreichs weit engere und intensivere wirtschaftliche und kulturelle Beziehungen. Abwartend und weit weniger intensiv war das Verhältnis zum ostdeutschen Staat. Nichtsdestotrotz waren die Kontakte zur DDR nach Aufnahme diplomatischer Beziehungen 1972 von schrittweiser Normalisierung, wechselseitiger Besuchsdiplomatie und gut entwickelten Wirtschaftsbeziehungen gekennzeichnet, die allerdings hinter der Stärke von jenen mit der Bundesrepublik zurückblieben. Als Spitzenereignis steht die Kubakrise dafür, wie eine falsche Weichenstellung von Seiten der beteiligten Politiker die Welt in den Atomkrieg hätte führen können. »Wer als erster schießt, ist als zweiter tot«, so resümierte ein amerikanischer General das spieltheoretische Dilemma in diesen Jahrzehnten. Aber nicht nur im Militärischen, sondern auch in vielen anderen politischen Kontexten standen sich West und Ost politisch, ökonomisch und mit Blick auf die jeweilige Gesellschaftspolitik konfrontativ gegenüber und prägten in Abgrenzung und in Parallelität zueinander eigene Stile des Entscheidens. Wie die Politik in Ost und West in ihren Spitzen, aber auch in den untergeordneten Instanzen den Vorgang des Entscheidens konzipierte und durchführte, wie man sich bei diesen Prozessen von Experten aus Wissenschaft und Wirtschaft beraten ließ und auf welche Weise politische Institutionen Informationen aufnahmen und verarbeiteten – das sind die Kernfragen des vorliegenden Bandes, denen die Autorinnen und Autoren anhand verschiedener Fallbeispiele aus USA und UdSSR, BRD, DDR und Tschechoslowakei nachgehen.
