Topics: Energy, Environment Protection, Nuclear Power Engineering , Geography , Geosciences
Notes: Abstract The expected fraction of buildings lost in the event of an earthquake of a given intensity can be considered as a useful indicator of the seismic vulnerability of a small urban nucleus and can be used for the evaluation of seismic risk on a regional scale. This work describes a procedure for quantifying this indicator through data obtained from the buildings which constitute the nucleus during rapid on-site surveys. The knowledge on which the procedure is based is that given by the observed vulnerability of old Italian centres.

Topics: Energy, Environment Protection, Nuclear Power Engineering , Geography , Geosciences
Notes: Abstract The problem of protection against earthquakes in Italy is made difficult by the presence of a huge historic and artistic heritage. Such a heritage is mainly made up of ancient buildings and monuments situated in the urban centres, which are densely distributed throughout Italy. Therefore, very complex problems are met in the determination of the value parameter concurring with the determination of seismic risk, in addition to hazard and vulnerability. An indication of the monetary value of a building is not sufficient as far as the cultural heritage is concerned: different criteria are necessary in order to distinguish which are the strategic buildings. If we consider that there are more than 2000 museums in Italy, most of which are placed inside historic buildings, it appears that museums should receive the highest priority in future initiatives for seismic rehabilitation.

    Water resources management 5 (1991), S. 209-216

Keywords: Flood forecasting ; unit hydrograph theory ; rainfall ; Veneto region ; Italy
Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000
Topics: Architecture, Civil Engineering, Surveying , Geography
Notes: Abstract The paper describes three flood forecasting models used in the framework of the integrated hydrological forecasting system of the Veneto Region. The three models are based on the unit hydrograph theory, even though the computation of the “effective” rainfall and the real-time correction procedure are carried out in different ways. A comparison of the model performances is also made.

Keywords: Architecture ; applied geomorphology ; landslides ; natural hazards ; Italy ; urban planning
Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000
Topics: Energy, Environment Protection, Nuclear Power Engineering , Geography , Geosciences
Notes: Abstract This paper examines the scope and limitations of geomorphological investigation of the sites of architectural and engineering works. Various degrees of vulnerability, forms of impact, and types of applied geomorphological response are summarized. Aspects of land development and construction practice that may increase the vulnerability of buildings and structures to geomorphological hazards are discussed. Strengths and weaknesses of the geomorphological input to hazard mitigation are reviewed. Examples are described that show both negative and positive influences exerted by geomorphological site analysis on urban and regional planning for unstable terrains in Italy. It is concluded that societal choice, within the overall matrix of a society's culture (sensu largo), will influence the way in which vulnerability is managed at sites, and hence the scope for utilizing geomorphological analysis of the physical risks.

Keywords: Dam-break events ; flood damage ; Piemonte region ; Italy
Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000
Topics: Architecture, Civil Engineering, Surveying , Geography
Notes: Abstract Six major reservoirs in Piemonte region, northwest Italy, have been examined in order to assess the possible flood damages to the downstream area. In this paper, some results of the hydraulic study are presented. The floods are simulated by computer models with the input data which describe the imagined dam-break events as well as other facts. Some important practical aspects of the work are extensively discussed, i.e. the problems concerning determination of the dam-breaches, the influence of the breach parameters, and estimation of the hydraulic resistance factors.
