    Beschreibung: In recent times, from 1871-1993, nearly 1,0OO tropical cyclonesof tropical storm or hurricane intensity have s cur red in the NorthAtlantic, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of Mexico. Of this total, about180 have reached Florida, with 75 of these known to have hurricaneforce winds (wind speed 2 74 mph) and 105 with tropical stormforce winds (39 mph - 73 mph). While early records are fragmentary and incomplete, thefollowing is a discussion of the more formidable Florida hurricanes.For convenience and to provide readable hurricane tracks, thediscussion examines hurricanes occurring within 30-year periods,divided into 10-year sections. When possible the SaffirISirnpson Scale (Table 1) describes the hurricane category for both past hurricanes (before the scale was developed), and recent hurricanes. (157pp.)

    Beschreibung: Hugo and Andrew were two of the most costly hurricanes to hit the United States in recordedhistory. They occurred within a time of three years in 1989 and 1992, respectively. The levelsof damage were disproportionately high when compared with past hurricanes of comparablestrength. Residential communities, in particular, were most severe. This report documents andcompares the nature and causes of structural damages inflicted by these two events.The damage nature was found to be very different. Hugo inflicted very severe water damage onresidential structures along the coastal belt spreading over one hundred miles in length. Damageby Andrew, on the other hand, was almost exclusively caused by high wind intensity.Accordingly, the structural damage modes were quite different. A case of reversing the roles ofHugo and Andrew was examined to call attention to the potential hazard of coastal communities. (Document has 70 pages.)

    Beschreibung: The critical need to predict the turbidity in water due to fine-grained sediment suspensionunder wave action over mud deposits for sedimentation and erosion studies, as well assorbed contaminant transport, is well known. Since fall velocities of fine sediment particlesare very small, they can be easily transported by hydrodynamic flows such as waves andcurrents. The presence of these particles in the water column affects accoustic transmission,heat absorption and depth of the eutrophic zone (Luettich et al., 1989). Because these sedimentsalso have a strong affinity for sorbing nutrients and toxic chemicals, sediments whichhave been deposited on the bottom may function as a source of contaminants to the watercolumn if they are disturbed by eroding forces resulting, for instance, from wave action. Anoutstanding example of a water body for these problems is Lake Okeechobee, the largestshallow lake in Florida. This lake shows typical signs of artificial eutrophication mainly dueto increased phosphorus loading associated with the surrounding region. Resuspension of sediment at the bottom of Lake Okeechobee composed of fine-grainedmaterial has been examined. A sediment transport model was used to simulate likelytrends in the evolution of the vertical suspended sediment concentration profile resultingfrom wave action, and the corresponding eroded bed depth was calculated through massbalance. Requisite information on characteristic parameters and relationships related tofine sediment erodibility were derived from field sampling of bottom sediment in the lake,and through laboratory experiments using this sediment and lake water.     Beschreibung: Hurricane Hugo hit U.S. Mainland on September 21, 1989just north of Charleston, South Carolina. It was billedas the most costly hurricane on record. The loss on themainland alone exceeded 7 billion dollars, more than15,000 homes were destroyed and the loss of livesexceeded forty.This article documents one aspect of the multi-destructionscaused by the hurricane - the water anderosion damage on water front or near water frontproperties. A general damage survey was given first,followed by assessment on the performance of variousengineered and non-engineering structures, on the majorfactors contributing to failures. Conclusions were thendrawn with recommendations for future improvement. (26pp.)

    Beschreibung: This study investigated the status of fish communitiesin 12 naturally acid Florida lakes. The small, shallowlakes were located in the Ocala National Forest, the TrailRidge, and panhandle Florida; regions where lakes have lowacid neutralizing capacities and are considered sensitive tofurther acidification from anthropogenic sources.Fifteen species from seven families were capturedduring mark-recapture sampling. Warmouth (Lepomis gulosus)was the only cosmopolitan species in the study. Bluegill(Lepomis macrochirus) and largemouth bass (Micropterussalmoides), collected from 11 and 10 lakes, respectively,were also widely distributed species. Total fish abundanceand biomass were not related to lake pH or total alkalinity.(Document has 202 pages)

    Beschreibung: A summary is presented of research conducted on beach erosion associated withextreme storms and sea level rise. These results were developed by the author andgraduate students under sponsorship of the University of Delaware Sea Grant Program.Various shoreline response problems of engineering interest are examined. Thebasis for the approach is a monotonic equilibrium profile of the form h = Ax2 /3 inwhich h is water depth at a distance x from the shoreline and A is a scale parameterdepending primarily on sediment characteristics and secondarily on wavecharacteristics. This form is shown to be consistent with uniform wave energydissipation per unit volume. The dependency of A on sediment size is quantifiedthrough laboratory and field data. Quasi-static beach response is examined torepresent the effect of sea level rise. Cases considered include natural and seawalledprofiles.To represent response to storms of realistic durations, a model is proposed inwhich the offshore transport is proportional to the "excess" energy dissipation perunit volume. The single rate constant in this model was evaluated based on largescale wave tank tests and confirmed with Hurricane Eloise pre- and post-stormsurveys. It is shown that most hurricanes only cause 10% to 25% of the erosionpotential associated with the peak storm tide and wave conditions. Additionalapplications include profile response employing a fairly realistic breaking model inwhich longshore bars are formed and long-term (500 years) Monte Carlo simulationincluding the contributions due to sea level rise and random storm occurrences.     Beschreibung: The instrument described in this report is an updated version of the high precision, automated Winkler titration system described by Friederich et al.(1984). The original instrument was based on the work of Bryan et al. (1976) who developed a colorimetric endpointdetector and on the work of Williams and Jenkinson (1982) who produced an automated system that used this detector.The goals of our updated version of the device described by Friederich et al. (1984) were as follows:1) Move control of the system to the MS-DOS environment because HP-85 computers are no longer in production and because more user-friendly programs could be written using the IBM XT or AT computers that control the new device.2) Use more "off the shelf" components and reduce the parts count in the new system so that it could be easily constructed and maintained.This report describes how to construct and use the new automated Winkler titration device. It also includes information on the chemistry of the Winkler titration, and detailed instructions on how to prepare reagents, collect samples, standardize and perform the titrations (Appendix I: Codispoti, L.A. 1991 On the determination of dissolved oxygen in sea water, 15pp.).     Beschreibung: This report contains inorganic nutrient chemistry, sulfide and oxygen data collected during cruises 2 through 5 of the 1988 Black Sea Oceanographic Expedition aboard the R/V Knorr. Continuous nutrient and sulfide data were obtained in the upper 375 m using a pumped profiling system. Discrete samples were collected from rosette-CTD casts. The corresponding physical oceanographic data have been presented by White et al. (1989). Although all of the data reported has been edited at least twice, errors may remain. We encourage queries and plan to distribute updates on electronic media if there are any non-trivial changes.

    Beschreibung: This report documents the methods used at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) for analyzing seawater nutrient samples with an Alpkem Series 300 Rapid Flow Analyzer (RFA) system. The methods have been optimized for the particular requirements of this laboratory.The RFA system has been used to analyze approximately 20,000 samples during the past two years. The methods have been optimized to run nutrient analyses in a routine manner with a detection limit of better than -±1% and a within run precision of -±1% of the full scale concentration range. The normal concentration ranges are 0-200 ~M silicate, 0-5 ~M phosphate, 0-50 ~M nitrate, 0-3 ~M nitrite, and 0-10 ~M ammonium.The memorandum is designed to be used in a loose-leaf binder format. Each page is dated and as revisions are made, they should be inserted into the binder. The revisions should be added into the binder. Retain the old versions in order to maintain a historical record of the procedures. (88 pages)

    Beschreibung: The data contained in this report were obtained as a continuance of the nearly bi-weekly hydrographic observations initiated by personnel at Hopkins Marine Station over two decades ago. These observations have been supported through the years by the State of California Marine Research Committee, California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations. Since July 1974, the hydrographic sampling program has been carried out by the investigators at Moss Landing Marine Laboratories. From July 1974 to June 1976, this work was done in conjunction with an interdisciplinary study of the squid, Loligo opalescens, supported by the National Office of Sea Grant 'via the University of California Sea Grant College Project Number R/F-15. Five of the original CalCOFI stations (2201, 2202, 2203, 2204 and 2205) have been-retained in our sampling routine and additional inner-bay stations have been added (1154 and 1121) Sampling was conducted on a monthly basis for the entire year. Analysis of the hourly air flow on a daily and monthly basis indicates patterns of stagnation from midnight to noon of the fol lowing day with moderate to strong air flow during period 1300 to 2200. Throughout the year 1971 whenever flow is greater than 5 mph, the prevailing wind direction is onshore and from a westerly direction. Suggestions for urbanization and industrialization are made on the basis of an understanding of the atmospheric conditions which lead to trapping and dispersal of atmospheric waste.
