    Transitioning to Zero Hunger (2024)

    Description: In 2015, the United Nations decided to establish the goal of achieving “zero hunger” in the world by 2030 through “outcome targets” such as eliminating hunger and improving access to food, ending all forms of malnutrition, promoting sustainable and resilient agriculture, and maintaining genetic diversity in food production. As a result of this decision, strategies are under way in different countries around the world in the form of political, academic, development, and non-governmental organization projects and programs. Five years later, these strategies have certainly generated results that need to be documented and analyzed so as to answer the following questions: what are the progress and success stories in terms of policies, innovations, technologies, and approaches to reach the zero hunger goal? What are the constraints and mitigation strategies? Are we really in a phase of transition towards the zero hunger goal? What new directions do we need to consider to achieve this goal, particularly in the context of the current COVID-19 pandemic, which affects all sectors of development around the world? This book volume will be published within MDPI’s new open access book series entitled “Transitioning to Sustainability”. It welcomes contributions of empirical research, position pieces, and presentations of important research programs or stakeholder initiatives that cover any of the four “outcome targets” of the zero hunger goal. The contributions may come from academics, students, and policy makers of any region in the world and may be related to specific disciplines or be inter and/or transdisciplinary. They may cover areas including but not limited to sustainable improvement of food production, implementing sustainable food and farming systems, improving access to food, limiting malnutrition, limiting food loss and food waste and, finally, global analyses of the challenges of reaching zero hunger in relation to other sustainable development goals as well as success stories on projects, programmes or government initiatives. Transitioning to Zero Hunger is part of MDPI's new Open Access book series Transitioning to Sustainability. With this series, MDPI pursues environmentally and socially relevant research which contributes to efforts toward a sustainable world. Transitioning to Sustainability aims to add to the conversation about regional and global sustainable development according to the 17 SDGs. Set to be published in 2020/2021, the book series is intended to reach beyond disciplinary, even academic boundaries.

    Description: Towards a Vigilant Society sheds light on the emergence of a new society of vigilance, in particular the actions of anti-migrant groups around Dover and Calais. Based on field research on both sides of the channel, it studies the dynamics of these groups – midway between a social movement and vigilantism – at these two key points in the international migration route between the European Union and the United Kingdom. In recent years, a series of anti-migrant groups have been mobilising on both sides of the Channel to counter migrations. Their actions range from demonstrations, to violence against migrants. And by staging their actions on social media, which is an extraordinary sounding board, these groups can build an online community and a mass audience, influencing public opinion and even the migration policies of states.

In einer historisch weit gespannten Studie unternimmt Hanno Depner eine kultur- und medienwissenschaftliche Kritik der blinden Bevorzugung von Diskursivität. Im Fokus steht die Konturierung des epistemischen Potentials von Diagrammen im Verhältnis zu Schrift und Bild. Dabei wird das Diagramm als Paradigma einer Philosophie vorgeschlagen, die sich als Orientierung versteht. Das erfordert jedoch die angemessene Berücksichtigung der ästhetischen Dimension des Diagramms, wofür der Vorschlag eines »hybrid optimierten Diagramms« entwickelt wird.

    Description: Images of diamonds appear everywhere in American culture. And everyone who has a diamond has a story to tell about it. Our stories about diamonds not only reveal what we do with these tiny stones, but also suggest how we create value, meaning, and identity through our interactions with material culture in general. Things become meaningful through our interactions with them, but how do people go about making meaning? What can we learn from an ethnography about the production of identity, creation of kinship, and use of diamonds in understanding selves and social relationships? By what means do people positioned within a globalized political-economy and a compelling universe of advertising interact locally with these tiny polished rocks? This book draws on 12 months of fieldwork with diamond consumers in New York City as well as an analysis of the iconic De Beers campaign that promised romance, status, and glamour to anyone who bought a diamond to show that this thematic pool is just one resource among many that diamond owners draw upon to engage with their own stones. The volume highlights the important roles that memory, context, and circumstance also play in shaping how people interpret and then use objects in making personal worlds. It shows that besides operating as subjects in an ad-burdened universe, consumers are highly creative, idiosyncratic, and theatrical agents.

    Description: Anerkennung markiert ein zentrales Strukturmoment pädagogischer Praktiken und gilt weithin unbestritten sowohl als Ziel als auch als Mittel pädagogischen Handelns. Die Fragen aber, was denn unter Anerkennung in pädagogischen Feldern – insbesondere in Schule und Unterricht – zu verstehen ist, wie Anerkennung praktiziert wird und zu welchen Effekten sie führt, sind hingegen weithin umstritten. Hier setzen nun die erziehungswissenschaftlichen Studien des Forschungsprojekts an und tragen in theoretisch, methodologisch und empirisch ausgerichteten Beiträgen zu einem umfassenden Verständnis von Anerkennung bei. Dabei werden an ausgewählten pädagogischen Praktiken jeweilige Anerkennungsmuster und -ordnungen herausgearbeitet und mithilfe eines adressierungsanalytischen Zugriffs auf ihre jeweiligen (Subjektivierungs-)Effekte hin untersucht. Dadurch gelingt es, den derzeitigen Diskurs der Anerkennung um eine eigenständige Perspektive zu bereichern.

An ihm enthüllt sich die Praxis des Denkens, denn hier wird ein Irrtum zum Lebensirrtum: Die Missdeutung der Existenz führt zum Scheitern des Lebens. Das Scheitern ist im Selbstverhältnis des Subjekts angelegt: Indem es sich selbst verkennt, ist es nicht bei sich. Es hat seinen Lebensinhalt und die Wahrheit, aus der es leben kann, außerhalb seiner selbst. Hegel nennt das Selbstbewusstsein, das von seinem wahren Wesen getrennt ist, in der Phänomenologie des Geistes das "unglückliche Bewusstsein". Die Phänomenologie weist Wahrheit als Form der versöhnten Selbstbegegnung des Individuums aus. Das unglückliche Bewusstsein existiert jenseits der Wahrheit. Es leidet unter der innerweltlichen Sinnlosigkeit seiner Existenz, spürt den Stachel der Selbstentzweiung. Die existentielle Prob-ematik des unglücklichen Bewusstseins, deren Grundlagen Hegel aufzeigt, wird von Kierkegaard expliziert. Sein Werk ist Antwort auf die Herausforderung und das Lebensproblem des unglücklichen Bewusstseins. An Hegel und Kierkegaard schließt eine Theorie scheiternder Subjektivität an, der es um eine Pathogenese von Subjektivität geht.

    Description: This open access book explores contemporary practices that challenge science, arguing that this matter cannot be simply disregarded as a new manifestation of “anti-scientism”. It scrutinizes the processes through which knowledge claims, refused by established institutions and the scientific community, seek legitimacy. Assuming an agnostic analytical stance, it explores the actors involved in such processes and their social worlds, their interactions with epistemic institutions, and the ways in which they enact such refused knowledge in their daily lives. Drawing on a three-year mixed-method research project, this collection demonstrates how refused knowledge can be seen as a distinct mode of knowing, employed in response to the uncertainties of everyday life. Thus, it offers a deeper understanding not only of how refused knowledge garners credibility, but also of how knowledge at large – including scientific knowledge – emerges from specific sociotechnical assemblages.

In diesem Buch wird gezeigt, warum diese Ansicht nicht nur einfach und praktisch ist, um eine solche Handlungslogik um Operatoren für Überzeugungen, Wünsche und Intentionen zu erweitern, sondern auch warum sich diese Beschreibung mit der Ansicht Donald Davidsons vereinen lässt, dass Handlungen Ereignisse zugrunde liegen. So wird versucht, eine Brücke zwischen der Stit-Theorie und Davidsonscher Handlungstheorie zu schlagen, bei der der Begriff der Intention eine Rolle spielt. Dabei wird der Intentionsoperator in dem logischen System bdi-stitâ dint, bestehend aus Handlungsoperatoren und den Operatoren für die mentalen Zustände, alternativ axiomatisiert.

Based on over eighty interviews with first-generation Lebanese immigrants in the global cities of New York, Montreal and Paris, this book shows that the Lebanese diaspora – like all diasporas – constructs global relations connecting and transforming their new societies, previous homeland and world-wide communities. Today, however, rapid EU legal developments mean that European police forces are no longer tied to a specific national legal context or a specific territory in the way they used to be. Norway is not a member of the EU. Or is it? This book shows that although it lacks formal membership status, Norway has become part of almost all of the major EU police cooperation measures and agreements. Not only does this mean that foreign police forces may operate on Norwegian territory and vice versa, but in addition, a wide range of EU regulations and cooperation instruments are incorporated directly into Norwegian law. By turning to the intellectual traditions that influenced but were left behind by STS and actor-network theory (ANT), we aim to challenge and expand the Sociology of Translation developed in ANT. Concepts such as ‘inscription’ (Derrida), ‘actant’, ‘narrative’ (Greimas), and ‘world/worlding’ (Heidegger, Spivak) were reemployed – translated – in the canonical STS-texts. What networks of meaning were left behind in this reemployment? The book showcases a combination of cultural and knowledge historical perspectives on the construction of the Sociology of Translation and practical experiments across the registers of nature and culture is novel. There have been brilliant individual attempts to realign the Sociology of Translation with narratives and modes of enunciation, but none has related the Sociology of Translation to the networks and traditions which enabled it but to which it erased its relations and debts. This innovative work will appeal to scholars in translation studies, cultural studies, environmental humanities, medical humanities, and Science and Technology studies. This edited book shows us how the convergence phenomenon occurs nowadays. Toyification of society as an expressive media for communication and cooperative play, not just for children and teenagers but also for adults, as part of produsage and affectionate activism. We used to think of the convergence factor in medium, platforms, etc. However, this book reminds us that as new media cultures expand, we should also consider the convergence of different segments of society. In that sense, it also focuses on mediums (like smartphones) and activities and agents. As McLuhan highlights, we encounter these items like mobile phones in every part of everyday life, which turn out to be an extended part of our bodies. Besides, we produce relationships and communities via these items and applications on it, and day by day, these items and applications have become a trend in almost every culture and society. This ‘we’ composition may also differ, like university students, women, elderly people, etc. However, with users and applications as an ecosystem, it may sometimes (re) produce unequal relationships, especially on gender-based activities and representations.

    Description: The internet is changing the way that knowledge is made and shared. Knowledge-making in face-to-face settings is being replaced by information gathering from remote sources, whose origins may be concealed but which can create an illusion of intimacy. Though remote communication is beneficial in many ways – modern societies would fail without it -- and though the tight boundaries of the face-to-face can be used for evil purposes such as criminal conspiracy, if the overall trend to remote communication continues unchecked, it could be disastrous for the future of democracy and the very idea of truth itself. Too much reliance on remote communication threatens the core institutions of democratic societies. We explain the change in technical detail, from a systematic analysis of the workings of the face-to-face to a high level setting-out of its dangerous political implications. The analysis includes field studies, reflexive examination, drawing on the wide experience of the authors, of the stickiness of the face-to-face in our own work and other institutions, and network analysis which explains the illusion of intimacy that can be generated inadvertently or maliciously. We look at the apparent effectiveness of techniques such as blockchain and the limits of their domain. New information is provided about the malicious use of disinformation by foreign powers. We dramatise the dangers to Western pluralist democracy through a personal accounting of the 2020 American election. By drawing out the special features of face-to-face interaction and its constitutive role in creating societies, with science as the icon, the book sets out an agenda for civic education that can protect democratic institutions from the erosion of pluralism and the facile abandonment of trustworthy expertise. The authors conclude by returning to the themes set out at the start of the book, namely the crucial role played by trust in modern societies and the importance of face-to-face interactions in reproducing that trust, and the democratic institutions in which it should be invested.

    Description: Anhand der Beispiele historische Eugenikbewegung und moderne Humangenomik wird in der vorliegenden Arbeit aufgezeigt, dass die Entstehung sowie Aufrechterhaltung von Netzwerken ein entscheidender Faktor ist für den Erfolg wissenschaftlicher Paradigmen und gegebenenfalls damit verbundener Ideologien, dass bei der Bildung bzw. Weiterentwicklung dieser Netzwerke bestimmten Akteuren besondere Bedeutung zukommt (= Schlüsselakteure oder hubs) und dass bei Verlust bestimmter hubs ein teilweiser oder vollständiger Zusammenbruch des jeweiligen Netzwerkes erfolgen kann. Die Richtung, in die sich wissenschaftliche Paradigmen entwickeln, ist damit stark abhängig von den Kräfte- bzw. Machtverhältnissen innerhalb der sie umschliessenden Netzwerke bzw. vom Verhalten und der Kontrolle bestimmter Akteure. Im Sinne der Akteur-Netzwerk-Theorie (ANT) wie sie von Bruno Latour u.a. entwickelt wurde, können Entstehung und Entwicklung dieser Netzwerke abhängig sein von menschlichen ebenso wie von nicht-menschlichen Akteuren (etwa Theorien, Methoden, Technologien etc.). Die Unterschiede sowie Gemeinsamkeiten der hier untersuchten Netzwerke und deren (potentielle) Konsequenzen für bioethische und biopolitische Fragestellungen werden in der Arbeit diskutiert.

Anti-poverty strategies have been part of the European Union agenda for decades. Most saliently, over a decade ago, the EU’s Member States pledged to lift 20 million people out of poverty. In spite of this commitment, the EU did not even meet a quarter of this target, and over 113 million people still were at risk of poverty and social exclusion by the end of 2020. Entsprechend liefert es einen Beitrag zur ontologischen Forschung. Sein und Sprache machen die vom Menschen wahrnehmbare Wirklichkeit aus - als zwei Seiten einer Medaille. Die Frage nach dem Sein ist immer zugleich auch diejenige nach der Sprache. Über die bedeutsame Sprache wird der erkennende Zugang zum Sein möglich, das Sein wird in der Sprache offenbar. Die aristotelische Philosophie versteht sich in der Konsequenz als Erste Wissenschaft und vertritt einen übergreifenden Anspruch: grundsätzlich, im Rahmen der Frage nach der Sprache und dem Sein, kann ihr alles thematisch werden. Implizit wird damit nach nichts Geringerem als der Möglichkeit von Sprache, Kommunikation und Erkenntnis gefragt. Umgekehrt bedürfen Sprache und Erkenntnis der Referenz auf das Wirkliche, um bedeutsam und sinnerfüllt zu sein. Unter der Prämisse dieser doppelten Perspektive kann die aristotelische Philosophie ihren primärwissenschaftlichen Anspruch behaupten. Fundament der grundlegenden Wechselseitigkeit ist das to ti en einai, das wohl mit Recht als einer der wichtigsten Kernbegriffe der aristotelischen Philosophie bezeichnet werden kann.

    Description: Die Historiographie der Sexualitäten erfährt vonseiten der akademischen Geschichtsschreibung aktuell eine nie gekannte Aufmerksamkeit: Nachdem sie jahrzehntelang eher nebensächlich behandelt wurde, sind inzwischen auch im deutschsprachigen Raum die Forschungsaktivitäten und die Vielfalt der Perspektiven deutlich gestiegen - nicht zuletzt dank eines neuartigen Dialogs zwischen der Geschichte der Sexualitäten und der Geschichte der Geschlechter, aber auch der Einbeziehung interdisziplinärer Ansätze aus der Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaft sowie den Medical Humanities. Die Beiträger*innen geben anhand ausgewählter Beispiele Einblick in das breite Spektrum eines rasant expandierenden Feldes.

    Description: When we imagine the activities of Asian American women in the mid-twentieth century, our first thoughts are not of skiing, beauty pageants, magazine reading, and sororities. Yet, Shirley Jennifer Lim argues, these are precisely the sorts of leisure practices many second generation Chinese, Filipina, and Japanese American women engaged in during this time. In A Feeling of Belonging, Lim highlights the cultural activities of young, predominantly unmarried Asian American women from 1930 to 1960. This period marks a crucial generation—the first in which American-born Asians formed a critical mass and began to make their presence felt in the United States. Though they were distinguished from previous generations by their American citizenship, it was only through these seemingly mundane “American”activities that they were able to overcome two-dimensional stereotypes of themselves as kimono-clad “Orientals.” Lim traces the diverse ways in which these young women sought claim to cultural citizenship, exploring such topics as the nation's first Asian American sorority, Chi Alpha Delta; the cultural work of Chinese American actress Anna May Wong; Asian American youth culture and beauty pageants; and the achievement of fame of three foreign-born Asian women in the late 1950s. By wearing poodle skirts, going to the beach, and producing magazines, she argues, they asserted not just their American-ness, but their humanity: a feeling of belonging.

Nietzsche versucht in seinen späteren Werken unermüdlich energisch, gerade mit den sprachlichen Gründen und Hintergründen schonungslos die Scheinbarkeit und zugleich die Scheinheiligkeit der absoluten Wahrheit des traditionellen Metaphysikers zu demaskieren. Obwohl Nietzsche ganz fest überzeugt seine unerhört scharfe Sprachkritik des substanziellen Gedankens überhaupt geübt hatte, konnte sie selbst leider noch nicht tiefgreifend auf der vergleichenden intersprachlichen, sprachphilosophischen und nicht zuletzt interkulturellen Bedeutungsebene ausreichend untersucht werden. Um die wesentlichen, bedeutungsvollen Differenzen zwischen den Sprachen und zwischen den Kulturen zum Ausdruck zu bringen, mehr noch, um uns dadurch neue fruchtbare Perspektiven, welche uns bisher aufgrund der sprachlichen Bedingungen kaum möglich gewesen sind, zu eröffnen, nicht zuletzt um uns nicht in der schrecklich sich anfeindenden despektiven, sondern eben in der bereichernd-befreundeten respektiven Art und Weise miteinander und füreinander verständigen zu können, eben dazu habe ich gerne meinen interkulturellen Vergleich angestellt, weil wir schon längst im globalen Zeitalter, in welchem nicht bloß kommunikativ, sondern darüber hinaus innovativ zu vergleichen ist, leben. Dürfen wir uns doch schon mal mit den fremden Federn schmücken, um unsere eingeschränkten Lebensperspektiven weiter zu verfeinern? Die Sprache, sei es die Muttersprache oder sei es eine Fremdsprache, ist nämlich ein unermesslicher Abgrund, der sich immer wieder ergiebig erschließen lässt.

Zu diesem Zweck wird das Anthropozän zunächst in gebotener Kürze als Umweltkrise dargestellt. Darauf folgt die Skizze einer Krise, die als eine Krise der Geistlosigkeit erscheinen könnte, da sie sich mit „Anti-Universalismus“ und „logischer Narzissmus“ charakterisieren lässt. Das führt zu der Frage, was unter dem Geistigen zu verstehen ist, und diese Frage wird aus Gründen, die dabei plausibel werden sollen, im Rahmen eines undogmatischen Panpsychismus beantwortet. Diese Antwort hilft wiederum, geistige Aspekte des Anthropozäns zu würdigen, und mit dem so ermöglichten Verständnis dieser Zeit als geistiger Umweltkrise ist das angestrebte Ziel erreicht.

    Description: Subject of this book is an epistemological consideration concerning the nature of knowledge. But other than the most essays on the subject of knowledge, here I am going to deal with a largely overlooked account to try to find an answer to the question of knowledge. This is the mental state account of knowledge. Or to put it into the main question: is knowledge a mental state? Now, the question is: Why is the epistemic thinking of Cook Wilson, Prichard and Austin afflicted with such ignorance in contemporary epistemic discussions? The answer is: an unreflected Platonian heritage during 2000 years of epistemic thinking -- a notion which is similar to a point Hetherington has called ``epistemic absolutism''. So my main conclusion here is: the JTB thesis (knowledge is some aspect of justified true belief) is insufficient in order to give an account of the nature of knowledge. A consequence from this is: all the epistemic theories which are dealing with the JTB thesis are based on deficient assumptions. Hence their results -- notably the well-known externalism/internalism debate - are insufficient, too. So, there is a need for a new theory of knowledge based on the MS thesis.

    Description: Part of the American Literatures Initiative Series Beyond the Nation charts an expansive history of Filipino literature in the U.S., forged within the dual contexts of imperialism and migration, from the early twentieth century into the twenty-first. Martin Joseph Ponce theorizes and enacts a queer diasporic reading practice that attends to the complex crossings of race and nation with gender and sexuality. Tracing the conditions of possibility of Anglophone Filipino literature to U.S. colonialism in the Philippines in the early twentieth century, the book examines how a host of writers from across the century both imagine and address the Philippines and the United States, inventing a variety of artistic lineages and social formations in the process. Beyond the Nation considers a broad array of issues, from early Philippine nationalism, queer modernism, and transnational radicalism, to music-influenced and cross-cultural poetics, gay male engagements with martial law and popular culture, second-generational dynamics, and the relation between reading and revolution. Ponce elucidates not only the internal differences that mark this literary tradition but also the wealth of expressive practices that exceed the terms of colonial complicity, defiant nationalism, or conciliatory assimilation. Moving beyond the nation as both the primary analytical framework and locus of belonging, Ponce proposes that diasporic Filipino literature has much to teach us about alternative ways of imagining erotic relationships and political communities.

    Description: In this open access book, Timothy Aylsworth and Clinton Castro draw on the deep well of Kantian ethics to argue that we have moral duties, both to ourselves and to others, to protect our autonomy from the threat posed by the problematic use of technology. The problematic use of technologies like smartphones threatens our autonomy in a variety of ways, and critics have only begun to appreciate the vast scope of this problem. In the last decade, we have seen a flurry of books making “self-help” arguments about how we could live happier, more fulfilling lives if we were less addicted to our phones. But none of these authors see this issue as one involving a moral duty to protect our autonomy.

Realistic utopias, tensions and everyday experiences, 24 researchers explore how resistance to various forms of racism is pursued and embodied among groups of people who dream beyond racism in a variety of ways, often contradictory, rarely successful, but always stubborn and forward-looking. The anthology illustrates the breadth of anti-racism, but also analyses its problems and weaknesses. Inspired by anti-, post- and decolonial traditions, among others, together with social movement perspectives, the anthology challenges a static and essentialising approach found in research and policy that tends to emphasise the stability and immutability of inequality, even in the case of racism. In addition to a variety of concrete analyses and descriptions of historical and contemporary activism, the various authors also show the possibilities of anti-racism and can thus provide some hope, in these dark times, for those who want a society without racism. Sie muss den Substitutionsgedanken überwinden, wonach der übertragene Ausdruck für etwas nur den eigentlichen Ausdruck für dasselbe vertritt. Damit stellt sie den Dualismus von Verstandesbegriff und metaphorischem Anschauungsinhalt in Frage. Kierkegaards Kernbegriffe " Verzweiflung glqq und " Glaube glqq und seine zentrale Kategorie des " Einzelnen glqq ließen das stereotype Bild von Kierkegaard als Denker eines isolierten Individuums entstehen, das sich bis heute gehalten hat. Ziel der vorliegenden Untersuchung ist es, dieses Bild zu korrigieren. Kierkegaards Denken, so soll argumentiert werden, enthält soziopolitische Implikationen, die sein gesamtes Werk durchziehen. Diese können heute nicht nur im Rahmen gesellschaftskritischer Überlegungen Beachtung finden, sondern erweisen sich darüber hinaus als äußerst anschlussfähig für zeitgenössische Diskussionen um den Begriff des Politischen.

    Description: Increasingly social activists, journalists and policy makers have expressed concern over the proliferation of conspiracy theories in the public space. There is a growing fear of their impact on social cohesion and democracy, their power to erode trust in state institutions and science. These concerns often come with an expectation that it is the responsibility of academics to engage with conspiracy beliefs by countering them. But should they? In this book, contributors show that like everything that relates to conspiracy theories, even the answer to this question is not straightforward and can vary across disciplines and schools, can be influenced by disciplinary ethical codes of conduct, research methodologies, and specific approaches to conspiracy theories. Foregrounding a variety of approaches, from across disciplines (psychology, anthropology, sociology and media studies), academic seniority (from young scholars to full professors), and countries (USA, Ireland, UK, The Netherlands, Sweden, and Greece), the chapters in this book are in deep conversation with each other, offering multiple alternative takes on the issue of what should academics do with conspiracy theories. Die Theorien liefern daher nicht nur Beschreibungen des Sozialen, sondern sie wirken „performativ“. Diese Open-Access-Publikation fokussiert auf den Bereich der Kulturproduktion und zeigt auf, welche Bedingungen zur Verwendung der theoretischen Konzepte außerhalb der Wissenschaft geführt haben, wie die Theorien in Prozessen zur Anwendung kommen und welche Veränderungen daraus folgen. Hierzu wird zuerst ein konzeptioneller sowie methodologischer Rahmen präsentiert, bevor die empirische Studie einer Kulturwelt detaillierte Einblicke in die Wirkungsweisen ermöglicht. Diese wechselseitige weltweite Abhängigkeit wird besonders deutlich im Zuge wirtschaftlicher Verwerfungen, ökologischer Katastrophen oder sicherheitspolitischer Herausforderungen wie dem internationalen Terrorismus. In diesem Kontext ist auch die weltweite Finanz- und Bankenkrise 2008/2009 zu sehen, die zu einer noch nie da gewesenen globalen Absprache über Möglichkeiten der politischen Regulierung des Weltfinanzsystems geführt hat. Was bedeutet das für die immer noch hauptsächlich nationalstaatlich ausgerichtete Politik? Wie sollen die Menschen mit diesem Phänomen, genannt Globalisierung, welches jeden einzelnen konkret in seiner ganz persönlichen Lebenswelt betrifft, umgehen? Kurz: Es stellt sich die Frage nach politischer Steuerung der globalen Interaktionen auf allen gesellschaftlichen Ebenen. Kant gibt darauf die einzig realistische und zugleich die aktuell visionärste Antwort; denn er war sich bereits 1795 über die weltweite Abhängigkeit aller Menschen im Klaren und entwickelte deshalb das Weltbürgerrecht, welches ein dynamisches Instrument zur politischen Steuerung der Globalisierung hin zu einer friedlicheren Weltordnung demokratischer Staaten ist.

Dabei besteht stets die Gefahr, dass diese Sichtweisen ungewollt die Lektüre steuern: Wahrgenommen wird dann nur das, was einem die eigenen Voraussetzungen zu sehen erlauben. Daniel-Pascal Zorn stellt sich dieser Herausforderung. Er entwickelt eine radikal immanente Vergleichsmethode, die ganz ohne textäußere Kontexte auskommt. Im Zentrum steht dabei das Konzept der Reflexivität, die sich in philosophischen Begründungsfiguren, Prinzipien und Problemen ebenso wiederfinden lässt, wie in ihrer expliziten Thematisierung durch die philosophischen Texte selbst. Zorn entwickelt seinen Gedanken in Auseinandersetzung mit über 40 verschiedenen Philosophen, darunter Platon und Plotin, Hölderlin und Fichte, Spinoza und Kant. Er spannt damit zugleich einen Bogen, der über 2500 Jahre Philosophiegeschichte reicht. Das Buch eignet sich durch seinen didaktischen Aufbau hervorragend als Einführung in und Handbuch für die von Zorn vorgestellte Lektürehinsicht. Die Arbeit wurde mit dem Dissertationspreis der Eichstätter Universitätsgesellschaft 2015 ausgezeichnet.

    Description: This book provides a rich analysis of the history of Swedish victim support. With the majority of research on victim support centering on the Anglosphere, this book offers a unique case study for considering the role of the victim in the criminal justice system. While Sweden has enacted many laws to support victims, and victim assistance programs have grown rapidly, welfare policy has become more restrictive and crime policy, to some degree, more punitive. Drawing on archival material and interviews with key representatives for the Swedish Association for Victim Support (BOJ), this book examines what role the victim movement has played in a changing welfare state. It argues that BOJ filled a function in the decentralization and privatization of the Swedish welfare state and explores distinctive features of the Swedish victim movement and the form it has taken, as compared to that in other countries. This book will be of interest to scholars and students of criminology, sociology, social policy, civil society studies, and social work, and those engaged in studies of victims and victimology.

Kant zielen dabei nicht zuletzt auf eine philosophische Neuinterpretation klassischer konfuzianischer Werte. Honkong kommt dabei entgegen einer häufig vorschnell zugeschriebenen, marginalen Rolle im historischen Weltgeschehen die Funktion zu, negative Folgen und positive Möglichkeiten einer globalen Moderne zu bündeln.     Description: The book aims to set out in which respects concepts are properly studied in philosophy, what methodological role the study of concepts has in philosophy's study of the world, why there are several viable methods of analysis and even conceptual analysis has its place here. Many of the considerations in this book nowadays are placed under the headline 'metaphilosophy'. The book starts with some bold theses in favour of a representationalist theory of meaning and concepts which serve as the background for the discussion in the following chapters. In contrast to paradigmatic ordinary language philosophy the book endorses a representationalist theory of meaning and concepts, thus agreeing with many of its critics in philosophy and the cognitive sciences. In contrast to many of these critics and supposedly the majority of cognitive scientists it endorses the viability of conceptual analysis as one method of philosophy. The book reflects on Frege's theory of concepts, because Frege's theory of concepts was one strand that inaugurated analytic philosophy. Frege's theory of sentential unity has barely been superseded, and the problems arising from Frege's understanding of concepts are still alive. Frege's theory and the related problems in Frege's logic as in the Grundgesetze der Arithmetik (most famously the antinomy known as 'Russell's Paradox' going back to Frege's 'Basic Law V') lead over to considering the proper approach to our concept of logic and the issue of psychological and ontological realism in logic and mathematics. The central part of the book starts by reconsidering the approach and the idea of ordinary language philosophy and its understanding of conceptual analysis. Although ordinary language philosophy cannot be the whole of analytic philosophy a proper understanding of conceptual analysis turns out to be one part of analytic philosophy. This part starts with a general discussion of ordinary language philosophy, but proceeds then by a methodological overview and attempts to engage in some ordinary language philosophy concerning epistemological topics.
