    Description: This edited volume explores a variety of aspects of associative governance, providing detailed case studies of associations and associational governance in Scandinavia. Theoretically developing a concept and approach of associative governance, the book sheds light on a dynamic way of perceiving associative aspects of community and commercial life that has been hitherto underexplored and undertheorized. It shows how governance by associations may be conducted not only bottom‑up by self‑organized and voluntary participation, but also top‑down by authoritative incorporation through government, and – not least – in multifarious interstices in between. New section by exploring a vibrant panoply of dimensions of associative governance, empirically grounded in historical analyses of a wide range of organizational repertoires, the book may provide novel insights into the significant role of associative governance in Scandinavia over the past two centuries. Finally, it provides research‑based knowledge about how to maintain “good political and economic institutions” in the future and a more holistic and dynamic approach to the literature on The Nordic model. The book will be of key interest to scholars and students of Nordic and Scandinavian studies, history, sociology, political science, marketing, social policy, organization theory, and public management.     Description: Religion as a form of cultural expression constitutes a critical element in the relationship between Germany and India. The discovery of Indian traditions in Germany and re-interpretations of those traditions in India fueled not only new theological and philosophical explorations, but also extensive innovations in the fields of music, dance, bodily experience, and political intervention. Seeking to uncover the enfolding of colonial thought structures through presentations of the Self, while placing them in the context of global colonial value chains that connected the peripheries with the centre, this interdisciplinary volume addresses India through the lens of an entangled relationship. Adopting the position that the acceleration of communication, technical development, and colonisation locally triggered re-interpretations of the religious sphere, This volume takes a look at the period from 1800 to the end of National Socialism, tracing the strands of an Indo-Germanic religion in the making as it goes along. A special emphasis is placed on the artistic expressions of religious experience including re-enactments of musical compositions and dance configurations, which were created to embody India in Germany.     Description: This volume investigates a galaxy of diverse networks and intellectual actors who engaged in a broad political environment, from conservatism to the most radical right, between the World Wars. Looking beyond fascism, it considers the less-investigated domain of the 'Latin space', which is both geographical and cultural, encompassing countries of both Southern Europe and Latin America. Focus is given to mid-level civil servants, writers, journalists and artists and important 'transnational agents' as well as the larger intellectual networks to which they belonged. The book poses such questions as: In what way did the intellectuals align national and nationalistic values with the project of creating a 'Republic of Letters' that extended beyond each country’s borders, a 'space' in which one could produce and disseminate thought whose objective was to encourage political action? What kinds of networks did they succeed in establishing in the interwar period? Who were these intellectuals-in-action? What role did they play in their institutions’ and cultural associations’ activities?     Description: The study of Roman urbanism – especially its early (Republican) phases – is extensively rooted in the evidence provided by a series of key sites, several of them located in Italy. Some of these Italian towns (e.g. Fregellae, Alba Fucens, Cosa) have received a great deal of scholarly attention in the past and they are routinely referenced as textbook examples, framing much of our understanding of the broad phenomenon of Roman urbanism. However, discussions of these sites tend to fall back on well-established interpretations, with relatively little or no awareness of more recent developments. This is remarkable, since our understanding of these sites has since evolved thanks to new archaeological fieldwork, often characterised by the pursuit of new questions and the application of new approaches. Similarly, new evidence from other sites has since prompted a reconsideration of time-honoured views about the nature, role and long-term trajectory of Roman towns in Italy. Tracing its origins in the Laurence Seminar on Roman Urbanism in Italy: recent discoveries and new directions, which took place at the Faculty of Classics of the University of Cambridge (27–28 May 2022), this volume brings together scholars whose recent work at key sites is contributing to expand, change or challenge our current knowledge and understanding of Roman urbanism in Italy. The individual chapters showcase some of the most recent methods and approaches applied to the study of Roman towns, discussing the broader implications of fresh archaeological discoveries from both well known and less widely known sites, from the Po Plain to Southern Italy, from the Republican to the Late Antique period (and beyond).

    Description: This monograph deals with Polish foreign policy shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War. In tracing the diplomatic activity of foreign minister Józef Beck, it discusses six general problems: (1) the Polish political situation under the pressure of appeasement; (2) the project of Intermarium and efforts to implement it; (3) the action against Czechoslovakia and the conflict with the Soviet Union; (4) the Polish attitude towards the German concept of Gesamtlosung in Germany’s relations with Poland; (5) the genesis of the Polish alliance with Great Britain; (6) the Allies’ military inaction after Nazi Germany’s aggression. In these conditions, Poland made four key decisions: it stood against Czechoslovakia, it rejected German demands, it allied itself with the United Kingdom, and it rejected the Soviet Union’s claim for the Red Army to march across Polish lands.

    Description: How can immortality be a curse? According to the Wandering Jew legend, as Jesus made his way to Calvary, a man refused him rest, cruelly taunting him to hurry to meet his fate. In response, Jesus cursed the man to wander until the Second Coming. Since the medieval period, the legend has inspired hundreds of adaptations by artists and writers. Instrument of Memory: Encounters with the Wandering Jew, the first English-language study of the legend in over fifty years, is also the first to examine the influence of the legend’s medieval and early modern sources over the centuries into the present day. Using the lens of memory studies, the work shows how the Christian tradition of the legend centered the memory of the Passion at the heart of the Wandering Jew’s curse. Instrument of Memory also shows how Jewish artists and writers have reimagined the legend through Jewish memory traditions. Through this focus on memory, Jewish adapters of the legend create complex renderings of the Wandering Jew that recognize not only the entanglement of Jewish and Christian memory, but also the impact of that entanglement on Jewish subjects. This book presents a complex, sympathetic, and more fully realized version of the legend while challenging the limits of the presentism of memory studies.

    Description: In der Arbeitswelt der DDR bestanden markante soziale Ungleichheiten, die sich mit der Vereinigung verschärften. Die Gesellschaft der DDR war stark über die Arbeit im Betrieb organisiert, die wesentlich zur »Vergesellschaftung« beitrug. Da Betriebe das soziale und materielle Leben organisierten, prägten sie auch soziale Ungleichheit, obwohl sich die DDR als egalitäre Gesellschaft verstand. Jessica Lindner-Elsner untersucht am Beispiel des VEB Automobilwerk Eisenach, das den Wartburg baute, wie sich Arbeitsbedingungen und soziale Ungleichheit wandelten. Dies zeigt sie für die Kernbelegschaften und vulnerable Arbeiter:innen wie etwa Strafgefangene, Menschen mit Behinderungen und Ausländer. Sie waren gegenüber Mitarbeiter:innen in Normalarbeitsverhältnissen benachteiligt. Deutlich wird zudem die Ungleichbehandlungen von Frauen, die aufgrund fortbestehender Rollenverteilungen weniger flexibel auf Arbeitsanforderungen regieren konnten. Die Autorin fragt, wie solche Benachteiligungen im planwirtschaftlichen System entstanden. Ebenso zeigt sie, wie sich die Muster sozialer Ungleichheit im Übergang zur Marktwirtschaft veränderten, als das Automobilwerk durch die Treuhandanstalt abgewickelt wurde und mit Opel in Eisenach ein neuer Hersteller übernahm.

Zu europäischen Herrschersiegeln dieser Zeit existiert bis heute nicht einmal ein Corpus. Dieser Band greift ebendiese Lücke auf, um die politische Kommunikation mittels Herrscherbildern auf Massenmedien der Franken im ständigen Vergleich mit denen anderer poströmischen Kulturen (Oströmer, Angelsachsen, Langobarden, Westgoten etc.) zu untersuchen und die teils höchst unterschiedlichen Entwicklungen zu erklären. Dabei wird auch vor heißdiskutierten Themen wie dem „Monetarierwesen" oder der „arabo-byzantinischen" Münzprägung nicht haltgemacht.     Description: In the middle of the 9th century, the Abbey of Fulda founded a subsidiary monastery on the Weser, which was likely transformed into a collegiate monastery in the 10th century. In 1259, the abbot of Fulda sold his rights to the Bishop of Minden. After the Reformation, the episcopal rights passed to the Welfish sovereign in 1576. The collegiate monastery underwent a gradual secularization process from 1850 to 1863. The biographies of the personnel of the Boniface monastery attest to the close connections between the foundation and the city. Beyond Hameln, the book provides prosopographical material for the comparative study of medieval collegiate monasteries.

    Description: The lifetime of Johan Huizinga (1872–1945) was marked by dramatic transformations in Europe. Cityscapes, aesthetic codes, social orders, political cultures, international travel and means of warfare developed beyond recognition; entire catalogues of hopes and fears were torn asunder and replaced by new ones during not one but two wars. Amidst all these changes, Huizinga grew to become one of the most famous historians of his time. To this day, his works are treated as monuments in the cultural historical field. This book examines how these transformations and ‘experiences of loss’ affected and informed Huizinga’s historical perspectives. Most centrally, this book contends that Huizinga’s historical works helped to accommodate and give meaning to his own experiences of uncertainty and rupture, thus offering him a way of life in turbulent times. Eliza Orme, despite becoming the first woman in Britain to earn a university degree in Law in 1888, leading both a political organization and a labour investigation in 1892, and participating actively in the women’s suffrage movement into the early twentieth century, is one such figure. Framed as a ‘research memoir’, Eliza Orme’s Ambitions fills out earlier scant accounts of this intriguing life, while speculating about why it has been overlooked. Established historian Leslie Howsam shapes the story around her own persistent curiosity in the context of a transformed research landscape, where important letters and explosive newspaper accounts have only recently come to light. These materials show how Orme’s career ambitions brought her into conflict with the male-dominated legal community of her time, while her political ambitions were cut short by disputes with other women activists whose notions of political strategy she repudiated. In public, Orme was a formidable debater for the causes she supported and against opponents whose strategies—even for women’s suffrage—she repudiated. In private, she was generous, warm, and witty, close to friends, family, and her female partner.     Description: During the nineteenth century and into the early twentieth century, more Europeans visited the Middle East than ever before, as tourists, archaeologists, pilgrims, settler-colonists and soldiers. These visitors engaged with the Arabic language to differing degrees. While some were serious scholars of Classical Arabic, in the Orientalist mould, many did not learn the language at all. Between these two extremes lies a neglected group of language learners who wanted to learn enough everyday colloquial Arabic to get by. The needs of these learners were met by popular language books, which boasted that they could provide an easy route to fluency in a difficult language. Arabic Dialogues explores the motivations of Arabic learners and effectiveness of instructional materials, principally in Egypt and Palestine, by analysing a corpus of Arabic phrasebooks published in nine languages (English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Yiddish, Hebrew, Russian) and in the territory of twenty-five modern countries. Beginning with Napoleon’s Expédition d’Égypte (1798–1801), it moves through the periods of mass tourism and European colonialism in the Middle East, concluding with the Second World War. The book also considers how Arab intellectuals understood the project of teaching Arabic to foreigners, the remarkable history of Arabic-learning among Yiddish- and Hebrew-speaking immigrants in Palestine, and the networks of language learners, teachers and plagiarists who produced these phrasebooks.

    Description: This volume, bringing together work by scholars from Europe, East Asia, North America, and West Africa, investigates transnational religious spaces in a comparative manner by juxtaposing East Asian and African examples. It highlights flows of ideas, actors, and organizations out of, into, or within a given continental space. These flows are patterned mainly by colonialism or migration. The book also examines cases where the transnational space in question encompasses both East Asia and Africa, notably in the development of Japanese new religions in Africa.     Description: This book explores shared religious practices among Jews, Christians, and Muslims, focusing primarily on the medieval Mediterranean. It examines the meanings members of each community ascribed to the presence of the religious other at ""their"" festivals or holy sites during pilgrimage. Communal boundaries were often redefined or dissolved during pilgrimage and religious festivals. Yet, paradoxically, shared practices served to enforce communal boundaries, since many of the religious elite devised polemical interpretations of these phenomena which highlighted the superiority of their own faith. Such interpretations became integral to each group’s theological understanding of self and other to such a degree that in some regions, religious minorities were required to participate in the festivals of the ruling community. In all formulations, “otherness” remained an essential component of both polemic and prayer.

Das am Hamburger Alsterufer erbaute, bemerkenswert großzügig dimensionierte Wohnhaus von Emma und Henry Budge trug zu Recht den Titel »Palais«. Heute residiert hier die Hochschule für Musik und Theater. Von der Hansestadt aus entfaltete das Ehepaar eine rege mäzenatische Tätigkeit, in deren Zuge unter anderem Heime für Hilfsbedürftige etabliert und die Universitäten in Frankfurt und Hamburg unterstützt wurden. Vor allem Emma Budge trug zudem eine umfangreiche und hochkarätige Sammlung angewandter Kunst zusammen, die nach ihrem Tod in den Besitz der Freien und Hansestadt Hamburg übergehen sollte. Doch dazu kam es nicht: Nach ihrem Tod musste die Sammlung von den Erben versteigert werden, und im Palais am Alsterufer richtete sich der nationalsozialistische »Reichsstatthalter« ein. Das philanthropische Lebenswerk war damit unwiederbringlich zerstört. Mit dieser ersten umfassenden Biographie aus der Feder Karen Michels` über das außergewöhnliche Ehepaar Budge wird es verdient gewürdigt. Emma (1852-1937) und Henry (1840-1928) Budge Jahrzehntelang lebten die Budges in New York, wo der aus Frankfurt stammende Henry Budge als erfolgreicher Banker und Eisenbahnfinanzier ein enormes Vermögen machte. 1903 kehrte er mit seiner Frau Emma nach Deutschland zurück und ließ sich in Hamburg nieder, der Heimat seiner Gattin."

    Description: Rosa Schapire - emanzipierte Frau, leidenschaftliche Förderin expressionistischer Kunst, entwurzelt im Londoner Exil, aber Kämpferin bis zum Schluss. »Hätte ich im Mittelalter gelebt, ich wäre wohl eine Nonne oder Heilige geworden«, schrieb Rosa Schapire kurz vor ihrem Tod 1954. Um die Jahrhundertwende hatte sie sich gegen traditionelle Rollenbilder und für ein Leben als Intellektuelle entschieden. Als eine der ersten Frauen wurde sie im Fach Kunstgeschichte in Heidelberg promoviert, zog 1905 nach Hamburg und begeisterte sich dort für den gerade aufkommenden Expressionismus – besonders für die Künstlergruppe »Brücke« und Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, den sie später als Mäzenin unterstützte. Ihr Einsatz für die neue Kunstrichtung, die von den Nationalsozialisten als »entartet« verfemt wurde, machte sie – zumal als Jüdin – den Machthabern verdächtig. Der antisemitischen Verfolgung entging sie nur aufgrund ihrer Flucht nach London 1939. Während der Kriegsjahre baute sich Rosa Schapire dort eine neue, allerdings zeitlebens prekäre Existenz u. a. als Übersetzerin auf. Ihre Briefe aus den letzten Lebensjahren an Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, die hier erstmals umfänglich ausgewertet werden, zeigen eine exilierte Frau, die trotz Sorgen und Todessehnsucht, doch immer die Kraft fand, sich für die expressionistische Kunst einzusetzen.

Daneben formulierte er ein kriminalpolitisches Programm, in dem er Ziel und Zweck des Strafrechts grundlegend infrage stellte. Bauer hat in diesen Schriften oft Positionen bezogen, die für seine Zeit ungewöhnlich waren; zugleich zeigen sie, wie eng er dem Denken seiner Zeit verbunden war. Sie gewähren Einsicht in Diskussionen der frühen Bundesrepublik und führen eindrucksvoll vor Augen, wie sich Bauer als Jurist, Remigrant, jüdischer Intellektueller und Sozialdemokrat einmischte und Gehör verschaffte. So eröffnen seine »Kleinen Schriften« aus heute meist unzugänglichen Zeitungen und Zeitschriften, den Blick auf die Brüche in Bauers Biografie, auf Exil und Remigration als Schlüsselerfahrungen. Fritz Bauer (1903–1968) war eine der bedeutendsten Persönlichkeiten im Kampf für die juristische Ahndung der NS-Verbrechen in den 1950er- und 1960er-Jahren in der Bundesrepublik. Von den Nationalsozialisten ins Exil getrieben, kehrte Bauer 1949 nach West-Deutschland zurück und setzte sich als hessischer Generalstaatsanwalt für die Demokratisierung des Landes ein.     Description: The volume, dedicated to the 44th International Conference of the Italian Union for Drawing, investigates the theme of ‘Transitions’, which particularly effectively represents our time and the current condition of the discipline of Drawing. The term, beyond its generic meaning of an intermediate stage in a process in which a condition changes from one state to another, has always been used in various fields, from music to geophysics. In fact, the disciplines of drawing have always been confronted with themes and issues relating to transitions from one condition to another. The history of representation tells us of transformations, even epochal ones, relating to ‘drawing’, with all that such transitions entail: suffice it to think of the evolution of forms of representation, of instrumental apparatuses, of the mutability of supports, of the analogical-digital transition underway, of the new modes of communication on platforms, of the hypertrophic offer of images also on the net that confirms Guy Debord’s intuitions relating to the new spectacularisation of society. Similarly, representation triggers transitions in the prefiguration and communication of design, the anticipation and foreshadowing of future events.The challenges posed by the digital pose open questions whose scope can only be glimpsed, such as the relationship between drawing and the act of modelling, and the construction of new paradigms of visual language and communication. ‘Transitions’, almost implicitly, points to possible futures, the evolution of technique and the search for new modes of expression; at the same time, however, it can suggest silences and reflections in a process of connection between history, theory, criticism and construction.
