    Description: Scholars of Russian culture have always paid close attention to texts and their authors, but they have often forgotten about the readers. These volumes illuminate encounters between the Russians and their favorite texts, a centuries-long and continent-spanning “love story” that shaped the way people think, feel, and communicate. The fruit of thirty-one specialists’ research, Reading Russia represents the first attempt to systematically depict the evolution of reading in Russia from the eighteenth century to the present day. The third volume of Reading Russia considers more recent (and rapid) changes to reading, and focuses on two profoundly transformative moments: the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917, and the digital revolution of the 1990s. This volume investigates how the political transformations of the early twentieth century and the technological ones from the turn of the twenty-first impacted the tastes, habits, and reading practices of the Russian public. It closely observes how Russian readers adapted to and/or resisted their eras’ paradigm-shifting crises in communication and interpretation.

These volumes illuminate encounters between the Russians and their favorite texts, a centuries-long and continent-spanning “love story” that shaped the way people think, feel, and communicate. The fruit of thirty-one specialists’ research, Reading Russia represents the first attempt to systematically depict the evolution of reading in Russia from the eighteenth century to the present day. The second volume of Reading Russia considers the evolution of reading during the long nineteenth century (1800-1917), particularly in relation to the emergence of new narrative and current affairs publications: novels, on the one hand, and daily newspapers, weekly magazines and thick journals, on the other. The volume examines how economic and social transformations, technological progress and the development of the publishing industry taking place in Russia gradually led to a significant expansion of the reading public. At the same time, in part due to the influence of new literature reading policies in schools, there was a greater cultural standardisation of Russian society, which was partially opposed by new forms of poetic reading.

A queste e altre domande cerca di rispondere questo libro, analizzando le origini del Partito Socialdemocratico Italiano e la sua storia nel primo periodo repubblicano (1947–1953). Muovendosi sul duplice binario della storia politica e della storia delle culture politiche, esso ricostruisce sia le convulse vicende dell'area socialista a destra del PSI sia l'evoluzione degli orizzonti dottrinari, delle strutture interpretative della realtà e dei modi di intendere l'agire politico che tale area espresse, focalizzando l'attenzione sulla molteplicità di attori, sensibilità e mentalità che in essa, per un breve periodo, si incontrarono. Sullo sfondo, stanno la guerra fredda e il brutale impatto che essa ebbe sul sistema politico italiano.

    Description: L'esperienza della municipalizzazione delle case popolari nell'Italia giolittiana permette di focalizzare gli estremi di una parabola che approdò al riconoscimento delle problematiche abitative quale questione di interesse collettivo. La genesi dell'housing sociale si disperde pertanto nel complesso di iniziative che è stato possibile ricostruire nel supporto di uno straordinario corpus di documenti d'archivio, indagato nell'egida dei provvedimenti legislativi in materia di case popolari e municipalizzazione varati nel corso del 1903, vero e proprio termine spartiacque per gli sviluppi di tale vicenda. Sullo sfondo del combinato disposto scaturito dalle due normative si dipana infatti il filo rosso dell'intera narrazione, un viaggio che si muove attraverso frammenti di esperienze locali, riflessi di microstoria aggregati in un articolato mosaico fondato sul collante della municipalizzazione, lasciando trasparire il preludio di una fase di rottura in grado di liberare i prodromi dell'odierno welfare state.

    Description: In principio era un uomo che interpretò la sua missione sulla terra nel senso di attrarre gli altri uomini fuori dai loro spazi (case, famiglie, attività, villaggi) e dal loro tempo (sto­rico) per condurli a sé verso altri spazi (ovunque egli andasse) in virtù dell’avvicendarsi di un altro tempo (escatologico). Quest’uomo fu condannato a morte e morì. A partire dai giorni immediatamente successivi alla sua creduta resurrezione, prende avvio il processo con cui altri uomini, in suo nome, si dedicano a ri-situare se stessi e l’uma­nità intera in quadri formali significativamente riconfigurati dall’evento cristico: luoghi al contempo mentali e sociali strutturati dalla duplice tensione tra gli spazi tradizionali del mondo e quelli peculiari della “chiesa”, tra il tempo presente della storia e quello della sua incipiente fine. In questo libro qualcosa come una nuova identità sociale dei credenti in Cristo è osservata nelle peripezie del suo costituirsi in relazione a quattro dei principali ambiti di soggettivazione del mondo antico: l’umanità, l’ethnos, la città, la scuola filosofica.

    Description: The battle that took place near Konotop in late June 1659 was a continuation of the Muscovite-Cossack war, which began in the fall of 1658, soon after the signing of the Union of Hadiach. Cossack and Tatar detachments trapped a significant portion of the Muscovite army, leading to enormous Russian losses. The unprecedented defeat of the previously invincible forces caused panic in Russia, but the Muscovites’ capacity to turn defeat into political victory, and the fratricidal struggle in Ukraine, known as the “Ruin”, left most of the Cossack lands on the Right Bank of the Dnieper uninhabitable. Konotop is a classic example of a battle won, but a war lost. ariusz Robert Drozdowski, Ksenia Konstantynenko, Piotr Kroll, Serhii Plokhy, Oleg Rumyantsev, Natalia Yakovenko and Tatjana Yakovleva-Tairova, the authors of this collection, hail from Poland, Italy, USA, Ukraine and Russia. They consider the military, political, social, and cultural context of the battle and also investigate its treatement in historical and literary writings from the early modern era to the present. They approach their topic from the point of view of various disciplines, traditions, and schools of thought. Their essays expand our understanding of the battle, its outcome and legacy in unexpected and historiographically productive ways.

    Description: Although it resonates today with lavender fields, sunny heritage locations and the gentrified memory of Paul Cézanne’s pictorial turbulence, Provence has not always been the attractive territory of pacified leisure and festival culture. Since the seventeenth century, indeed, the region has inscribed its shifting geography, complex politics and the extraordinary diversity of its land and seascapes in the perception and imagination of British visitors. In the steps of anonymous or excellent travellers, the chapters of this volume chart some of the most significant moments in the intercultural transactions between the proud linguistic and literary distinctiveness of the province on one hand and the always challenged and sometimes baffled perception of Anglophone (and Anglophile) visitors on the other. Spanning across two centuries, from the largely unknown pre-revolutionary Provence visited by John locke and Tobias Smollett through the Victorian paradise of popular tourism and finally to the more secret ‘homeland’ of Modernists, this volume reveals an unexpected Provence which, in oblique and complex ways, has long held a mirror to British culture and often acted as the laboratory of its artistic life.

Una circolazione di idee che accompagna lo sviluppo delle relazioni sociali e politiche fra i due Paesi, spesso fornendo incisivi strumenti di interpretazione per tensioni, conflitti e riavvicinamenti.

The fruit of thirty-one specialists’ research, Reading Russia represents the first attempt to systematically depict the evolution of reading in Russia from the eighteenth century to the present day. The first volume of Reading Russia describes the slow evolution of reading between the end of the seventeenth and the beginning of the nineteenth century. During the reign of Peter the Great, the changes initially concerned a limited number of readers from court circles, the ecclesiastical world, the higher aristocracy and the Academy of Sciences, that considered reading as a potent way of regulating the conduct of the people. It was only under the modernisation programme inaugurated by Catherine the Great that transformations began to gain pace: the birth of private publishers and the widening currency of translations soon led to the formation of an initial limited public of readers from the nobility, characterised by an increasing responsiveness to European models and by its gradual emancipation from the cultural practices typical of the ecclesiastical world and of the court.
