    Description: This book examines how the Ming state transformed the multi-ethnic society of Yunnan into a province. Yunnan had remained outside the ambit of central government when ruled by the Dali kingdom, 937-1253, and its foundation as a province by the Yuan regime in 1276 did not disrupt Dali kingdom style political, social and religious institutions. It was the Ming state in the fourteenth to seventeenth centuries through its institutions for military and civilian control which brought about profound changes and truly transformed local society into a province. In contrast to other studies which have portrayed Yunnan as a non-Han frontier region waiting to be colonised, this book, by focusing on changes in local society, casts off the idea of Yunnan as a border area far from civilisation.

    Description: The Orthodox Christian tradition has all too often been sidelined in conversations around contemporary religion. Despite being distinct from Protestantism and Catholicism in both theology and practice, it remains an underused setting for academic inquiry into current lived religious practice. This collection, therefore, seeks to redress this imbalance by investigating modern manifestations of Orthodox Christianity through an explicitly gender-sensitive gaze. By addressing attitudes to gender in this context, it fills major gaps in the literature on both religion and gender. Starting with the traditional teachings and discourses around gender in the Orthodox Church, the book moves on to demonstrate the diversity of responses to those narratives that can be found among Orthodox populations in Europe and North America. Using case studies from several countries, with both large and small Orthodox populations, contributors use an interdisciplinary approach to address how gender and religion interact in contexts such as, iconography, conversion, social activism and ecumenical relations, among others. From Greece and Russia to Finland and the USA, this volume sheds new light on the myriad ways in which gender is manifested, performed, and engaged within contemporary Orthodoxy. Furthermore, it also demonstrates that employing the analytical lens of gender enables new insights into Orthodox Christianity as a lived tradition. It will, therefore, be of great interest to scholars of both Religious Studies and Gender Studies.

    Description: E-commerce offers immense challenges to traditional dispute resolution methods, as it entails parties often located in different parts of the world making contracts with each other at the click of a mouse. The use of traditional litigation for disputes arising in this forum is often inconvenient, impractical, time-consuming and expensive due to the low value of the transactions and the physical distance between the parties. Thus modern legal systems face a crucial choice: either to adopt traditional dispute resolution methods that have served the legal systems well for hundreds of years or to find new methods which are better suited to a world not anchored in territorial borders. Online Dispute Resolution (ODR), originally an off-shoot of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), takes advantage of the speed and convenience of the Internet, becoming the best, and often the only option for enhancing consumer redress and strengthening their trust in e-commerce. Par routine ou par paresse, on pense en premier lieu à l’irruption de Martin Luther et des autres protagonistes de la Réforme protestante et à la scission de la chrétienté latine. Mais toute l’Europe n’est pas chrétienne : les temps modernes s’ouvrent avec l’expulsion, les conversions forcées et la persécution des juifs et des musulmans dans la péninsule Ibérique de la Reconquista. Et il y a une Europe ottomane, elle aussi pluri-religieuse. L’expérience européenne des conflits religieux se fait en outre dans un horizon global de la rencontre avec d’autres religions et civilisations où les Européens découvrent leur propre barbarie. Celle-ci s’exprime dans les atrocités des guerres civiles, des guerres de religion en France à l’action des troupes de Cromwell en Irlande. Partant de la pluralité religieuse de l’espace européen, les affrontements de la première modernité se lisent comme un douloureux processus d’apprentissage d’accepter et de gérer cette pluralité irréductible. Ainsi naît une notion et forme historique, politique et culturelle de l’Europe qui intègre dans sa constitution la conflictualité religieuse. This is true especially for those without a background in biology or ecology. The Endangered Species Act: History, Implementation, Successes, and Controversies discusses the Act using clear scientific prose that all professionals whose activities fit into the ESA compliance process can readily comprehend, including those with limited education in science. The book begins by exploring the deeply rooted history of the Endangered Species Act, which extends back decades preceding its enactment in 1973. It continues with a discussion of the basic scientific theory underlying the Act and provides an overview of its key regulations. The author also examines the Act in the context of other key environmental planning statutes such as the National Environmental Policy Act and the Clean Water Act, especially Section 404 of the Clean Water Act, which relates specifically to wetlands. The remainder of the book details the regulatory processes faced by other government agencies and private developers who must routinely ensure that their actions comply with the Endangered Species Act. It concludes with a broad discussion of current controversies associated with the Act and how those controversies might ultimately change how environmental practitioners will have to comply with the Act in the future. The book is neither a defense of the Endangered Species Act and its associated regulations nor a call to repeal or modify the Act or regulations. The presentation is factual and avoids the hype and hyperbole commonly directed at the Act by both environmental activists and deregulation proponents.     Description: This chapter analyses how writing and writing development has been and currently is prescribed and enacted in the curriculum for Danish as a subject (L1) in Years 1–9. Highlighting historical points of impact for writing in curricula from the early–nineteenth century through frequent reforms in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, we focus empirically on the 2014 ruling curricular document Common Standards and auxiliary documents framing writing assessment at the school-leaving exam, as well as empirical classroom studies. Analyses of steering documents indicate that there has been an unprecedented push towards outcome-based and competence-oriented writing curricula. Following Ivanič's Discourses of Writing (DoW) framework, process writing is found to be the most dominant discourse from Grades 1–7. The analysis of the enacted writing curriculum, which focuses on empirical studies from 2009 until now, reveals that the enacted curriculum is misaligned with the prescriptive curriculum and tends to position the student in ambiguous ways—from joyful writer to a writer tested in high-stakes exams. For discussion, we call for a more coherent writing curriculum. Methodologically, we argue that the DoW framework needs to be complemented with a Nordic Bildung tradition, which accentuates personal formation, and a multimodal framework informing the Danish curriculum.

Par le prisme de l’histoire de neuf marais asséchés en France au cours du XVIIe, cet ouvrage, fondé sur l’exploitation d’archives nombreuses, françaises et néerlandaises, met en lumière le rôle de la monarchie et de son aristocratie ministérielle dans la conduite de ce processus. Grâce à des dispositifs juridiques et des méthodes de gestion novateurs, mais aussi par un soutien politique constant, la monarchie a permis la mise en culture d’espaces traditionnellement consacrés à la pêche, à la chasse ou à la cueillette. Richelieu et ses créatures, puis Mazarin et ses associés ont ainsi procédé à l’importation d’un modèle hydraulique et agricole d’inspiration néerlandaise, ancré dans l’économie européenne et aux conséquences sociales et environnementales encore marquantes de nos jours. Les bonifications françaises du XVIIe siècle montrent l’importance des liens entre les élites politiques françaises et les élites commerçantes néerlandaises. Ainsi, l’histoire des assèchements offre un regard original sur l’histoire politique du XVIIe siècle français, révélant les enjeux territoriaux de la centralisation monarchique et du développement de l’État.

    Description: This volume is an investigation of how Augustine was received in the Carolingian period, and the elements of his thought which had an impact on Carolingian ideas of ‘state’, rulership and ethics. It focuses on Alcuin of York and Hincmar of Rheims, authors and political advisers to Charlemagne and to Charles the Bald, respectively. It examines how they used Augustinian political thought and ethics, as manifested in the De civitate Dei, to give more weight to their advice. A comparative approach sheds light on the differences between Charlemagne’s reign and that of his grandson. It scrutinizes Alcuin’s and Hincmar’s discussions of empire, rulership and the moral conduct of political agents during which both drew on the De civitate Dei, although each came away with a different understanding. By means of a philological–historical approach, the book offers a deeper reading and treats the Latin texts as political discourses defined by content and language.

    Description: This book provides a comparative and transnational examination of the complex and multifaceted experiences of anti-labour mobilisation, from the bitter social conflicts of the pre-war period, through the epochal tremors of war and revolution, and the violent spasms of the 1920s and 1930s. It retraces the formation of an extensive market for corporate policing, privately contracted security and yellow unionism, as well as processes of professionalisation in strikebreaking activities, labour espionage and surveillance. It reconstructs the diverse spectrum of right-wing patriotic leagues and vigilante corps which, in support or in competition with law enforcement agencies, sought to counter the dual dangers of industrial militancy and revolutionary situations. Although considerable research has been done on the rise of socialist parties and trade unions the repressive policies of their opponents have been generally left unexamined. This book fills this gap by reconstructing the methods and strategies used by state authorities and employers to counter outbreaks of labour militancy on a global scale. It adopts a long-term chronology that sheds light on the shocks and strains that marked industrial societies during their turbulent transition into mass politics from the bitter social conflicts of the pre-war period, through the epochal tremors of war and revolution, and the violent spasms of the 1920s and 1930s. Offering a new angle of vision to examine the violent transition to mass politics in industrial societies, this is of great interest to scholars of policing, unionism and striking in the modern era.

    Description: The aim of the chapter is to determine whether the current education of interpreters in the Republic of Slovenia responds to the needs of the society. In order to do that, the chapter first briefly outlines the development of the education of Slovene interpreters from its beginnings to the present. By drawing on the results of a nation-wide survey of language-support needs in Slovene healthcare institutions from 2016, which gathered responses of 564 healthcare workers, and on statistics of the Ministry of Interior Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia providing the countries of origin of applicants for international protection in Slovenia in the period between 2013 and 2019, the language needs on the contemporary Slovene society are outlined. These needs are then compared to the results provided by a nation-wide survey of interpreters and sworn interpreters from 2020 (n=123) focusing on language combinations they offer and identifying different settings in which they work. The results of this comparison show that there is a serious mismatch between the needs of the society and the existing language profiles of professional interpreters in the market, which results in the fact that ad-hoc interpreters are used for almost all the languages of newly arrived migrants with negative consequences for society at large. The chapter concludes with the description of educational efforts aimed at remedying the situation: first, a short specialisation program for sworn interpreters introduced in 2018, and second, the education of teachers of community interpreters for Albanian, Arabic and Persian which took place from 2019 to 2020.

    Description: On sait que la Troisième République a assuré renseignement primaire élémentaire pour tous et créé l’enseignement secondaire des jeunes filles. On sait moins qu’à partir de 1880 la France s’est progressivement couverte d’écoles primaires supérieures et de cours complémentaires offrant aux filles et aux garçons des études prolongées au-delà du certificat d’études. Ces « collèges du peuple », pour reprendre une expression d’époque, allaient permettre à des enfants issus de milieux modestes d’accéder à des emplois d’encadrement moyen. Le présent ouvrage étudie cette zone obscure dans le passé de l’institution scolaire. Rompant avec l’explication habituelle de la croissance de la scolarisation en termes de « demande sociale », il montre la contribution de l’institution scolaire à son propre développement : ainsi le succès de renseignement primaire supérieur tient à la fois à ses relations organiques avec renseignement primaire élémentaire et à sa souplesse d’adaptation à des populations aux intérêts variés. Autre découverte : à certaines périodes, les collectivités locales ont été des acteurs décisifs du développement de la scolarisation. Une dernière partie examine les relations entre les débats sur « l’école unique », apparus dès 1900, et les évolutions institutionnelles qui ont abouti à l’unification partielle des filières d’enseignement prolongé. La conclusion propose un schéma d’ensemble pour analyser l’école, qui renouvelle les interrogations sur l’école développées par les sciences sociales depuis trente ans.

    Description: En 1954, Djibo Bakary, un activiste nationaliste de gauche nigérien fonda l’Union Démocratique Nigérienne (UDN), un parti politique qui visait non seulement à combattre la domination coloniale, mais aussi à réaliser une transformation large de la société nigérienne. Le parti fut salué par le cri de ralliement « Sawaba », un terme haoussa qui indique le soulagement par rapport à l’adversité et un retour au calme et à la sérénité soulignant l’aspiration des Nigériens à être délivrés de la pauvreté et de l’oppression coloniale sous toutes ses formes. Le Sawaba, dont le noyau était constitué d’un « petit peuple » de ruraux ayant migré en ville, remporta les premières élections générales au suffrage universel du Niger en 1957 et forma le tout premier gouvernement autonome du pays, sous suzeraineté française. En 1958, le mouvement eut maille à partir avec le pouvoir gaulliste de France préférant l’indépendance immédiate à une nouvelle forme d’autonomie et appelant à rejeter la constitution de la Ve République. Les Français, compte tenu la situation stratégique du Niger, réagirent de manière implacable. En violation flagrante de la constitution, un nouveau gouverneur émascula le gouvernement Bakary. La campagne du Sawaba fut contrecarrée. Le parti, interdit, devint une organisation militaire menant la guérilla. Cependant, la guérilla du Sawaba (1960-1966), soutenue par des régimes gauchistes étrangers, aboutit à un échec entraînant la destruction définitive du mouvement. Le récit des luttes du Sawaba n’est pas dénué d’ambigüité, ce qui renvoie au caractère hybride du mouvement et aux métamorphoses vécues au long de son existence. Les sawabistes se montrèrent un mélange singulier d’activistes politiques et de combattants qui, au lieu de faire violence à la population, s’engagèrent dans la bataille comme les agitateurs de rue qu’ils furent jadis – certes armés, mais avec l’espoir de plaire à l’électeur et d’entraîner une fin instantanée aux souffrances du peuple. Millénariste plutôt que militariste, cette mentalité donne la clef de la tragédie de leur défaite.

    Description: Les pérégrinations des moines de Saint-Philibert depuis Noirmoutier jusqu’à Tournus sont souvent citées en exemple pour caractériser l’exode devant les incursions normandes au IXe siècle. La confrontation avec l’itinéraire d’autres groupes monastiques témoigne cependant de l’originalité de cette congrégation qui ne rejoint pas son établissement d’origine. En utilisant les données fournies par les sources diplomatiques, narratives et archéologiques, l’auteur définit les modalités de cet exode et ses implications sur la structure du monastère. Son rôle actif dans la réforme monastique carolingienne lui confère une place privilégiée sur la scène politique. Placé sous la protection royale, il est aussi soutenu par un groupe de la haute aristocratie, cerné grâce à une enquête prosopographique. Ce réseau de relations comme l’évolution de la politique territoriale de Charles le Chauve ont en partie déterminé l’itinéraire des moines et l’expansion du domaine monastique. Leur installation définitive à Tournus s’accompagne d’une réorganisation de l’ensemble de leur patrimoine. Il devient alors possible de s’interroger sur l’existence d’un réseau monastique précoce dont la structure reste ensuite liée aux particularismes de cette histoire mouvementée.

The concept of The Remittance Village emphasises rural people’s transnational mobilities as a key feature of contemporary dynamics in many parts of the Global South, which are reconfiguring rural social, economic and ecological textures. Sunam challenges complacent linear narratives that assume new opportunities such as transnational migration, and remittances provide better pathways for the rural poor to come out of poverty, as well as narratives that understate the importance of land and farming for the rural poor. He demonstrates both that new opportunities are inaccessible for many poor people and that accessing these opportunities often engenders increased precarity and vulnerability. In The Remittance Village, he finds that even those accessing new opportunities are successful only when their household member(s) are simultaneously engaged in in-situ (non-)agricultural activities. This book is a valuable resource for scholars and students from a range of interdisciplinary backgrounds, including human geography, anthropology of development, and sociology. It is also recommended reading for policy makers, international development agencies and I/NGOs working on rural development in the Global South.

    Description: À l’issue de la brève guerre franco-italienne, treize communes savoyardes (Séez, Sainte-Foy-Tarentaise, Montvalezan, Bessans, Bramans, Lanslebourg, Lanslevillard, Sollières, Termignon), dauphinoises (Montgenèvre, Ristolas) et azuréennes (Fontan, Menton) furent occupées par les troupes du Regio Esercito à la fin juin 1940 et pratiquement annexées durant trois années, en vertu de l’application du « Bando Mussolini ». En réaction au débarquement allié en Afrique du Nord, la 4e armée occupa onze départements du Sud-Est (Alpes-Maritimes, Basses-Alpes, Hautes-Alpes, Isère, Savoie, Haute-Savoie, Var, Drôme en totalité, Bouches-du-Rhône, Vaucluse, Ain en partie) tandis que le VIIe corps d’armée débarquait en Corse, à partir du 11 novembre 1942. Quatre millions de Français furent donc occupés par deux cent mille soldats italiens, mais aussi par des Chemises noires et des policiers de l’OVRA. Cette présence étrangère suscita de multiples incidents, notamment dans les départements savoyards, la région niçoise et en Corse, où les prétentions irrédentistes étaient mal supportées. La répression ne fut pas si légère que l’on eut coutume de l’affirmer (une dizaine d’exécutés, une trentaine de morts sous la torture ou au combat, ouverture de camps de concentration à Sospel, Embrun et Modane, déportation de plusieurs centaines de résistants ou de personnalités jugées hostiles dans les pénitenciers de Ligurie, du Piémont, de l’île d’Elbe ou de Calabre). L’Occupant fut confronté à des questions incontournables en 1943 (la fortification du littoral, le STO, l’émergence des maquis, l’attitude à adopter vis-à-vis d’une importante communauté juive) tout en puisant largement dans les ressources économiques et les dépôts militaires. Au moment de la capitulation transalpine du 8 septembre 1943, quelques affrontements opposèrent les troupes italiennes à leurs anciens alliés à Chambéry, Grenoble, Gap et, surtout, en Corse où elles perdirent plusieurs centaines d’hommes.

    Description: “Chapter 6” systematizes and analyzes Kierkegaard’s insightful remarks on human affectivity in relation to moral emotions, body, contagion, and collectivity. Following a brief outline of the conceptualization of affects and human affectivity from Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Spinoza, Tomkins, and Massumi, the first part zooms in on empathy and sympathy in two important precursors of Kierkegaard, namely David Hume and Adam Smith. The second part argues for Kierkegaard’s distinctively affective reading of admiration, which I locate in its being fundamentally linked with other emotions such as envy, but also in its being oriented toward the mediocre and base, having a limited motivational capacity, and being highly contagious. Affective admiration is then related to the contemporary discussion on moral exemplars, posing a challenge to the view of the epistemological and moral trustworthiness of admiration in moral exemplarity espoused primarily by Linda Zagzebski. The third part centers on the affective character of Kierkegaard’s crowd psychology. Therein I examine his critical remarks on human collectivity, focusing on such key concepts from his social and political philosophy as “crowd” and “the public.” Reading his philosophy alongside two French theorists of mass society, Gabriel Tarde and René Girard, I draw out Kierkegaard’s great interest in such mimetic terms as magnetism, fascination, somnambulism, scapegoating, and violence.

    Description: La richesse serait indispensable pour « tenir son rang », s’élever dans la société, exercer certaines charges, entretenir un réseau ou contribuer au Bien commun. C’est ce que cet ouvrage veut démontrer, en étudiant les élites sociales dans un espace précis : les cités d’un Ouest français entendu au sens large, et en abordant des exemples très variés, de Rouen à Quimperlé. Ici, les élites sont analysées avant tout dans ce qui les réunit, dans les rapports communs qu’elles entretiennent avec l’argent et la richesse. Pour ce faire, trois thèmes ont été dégagés : l’analyse des revenus et les stratégies familiales ; les formes de la consommation et leurs finalités ; enfin l’usage des richesses dans la sphère publique et les discours qui leur sont liés. Des questions de méthode fondamentales sont abordées, aussi bien sur les évaluations des fortunes que sur l’homogénéité relative des pratiques culturelles liées à la richesse. On découvre que, chez les élites, la richesse et l’enrichissement sont indissociables de la polyactivité et de l’efficacité des réseaux sociaux. La richesse est également un instrument de distinction sociale, à travers des pratiques culturelles de consommation propres aux élites, et en particulier un jeu subtil entre ostentation et modération. Pour ces riches, le don occupe une place essentielle, à commencer par la charité envers les pauvres. Mais plus largement, l’argent des élites irrigue toute la cité, via des investissements ou des offres de crédit. La richesse est, pour finir, une voie d’accès aux cultures politiques, de l’évergétisme à la contribution fiscale. Les dix auteurs qui ont participé à cet ouvrage montrent ainsi que le rapport des élites à l’argent constitue un sujet de recherche particulièrement fructueux, parce qu’il nécessite de croiser des analyses sociales, économiques, politiques et culturelles.

Drawing on a large database of twentieth- and twenty-first-century films depicting epidemics, the study looks into issues including trust, distrust, and mistrust; different epidemic experiences down the lines of expertise, gender, and wealth; and the difficulties in visualizing the invisible pathogen on screen. The authors argue that epidemics have long been presented in cinema as forming a point of cohesion for the communities portrayed, as individuals and groups “from below” represented as characters in these films find solidarity in battling a common enemy of elite institutions and authority figures. Throughout the book, a central question is also posed: “cohesion for whom?”, which sheds light on the fortunes of those characters that are excluded from these expressions of collective solidarity. This book is a valuable reference for scholars and students of film studies and visual studies as well as academic and general readers interested in topics of films and history, and disease and society.

Et de fait, en invoquant ces noms, nous avons déjà mis un pied sur le continent asiatique. On comprend alors que l'Asie Mineure peut être considérée comme un espace transitoire entre un monde égéen classique et un orient plus lointain. Et c'est ainsi que la péninsule anatolienne fut longtemps regardée dans les études anciennes. Pourtant, l'Asie Mineure est aussi un monde en soi, complexe, varié et digne d'intérêt pour elle-même. C'est dans cet esprit que s'est tenu le colloque de Tours consacré à cet espace géographique dans l'Antiquité, dont nous rapportons les actes dans ce volume. Les contributions du colloque international qui s'est tenu à l'université de Tours les 21 et 22 octobre 2005 peuvent se résumer en quatre axes à la fois distincts et complémentaires. Il s'agit tout d'abord d'évaluer les manières de penser, de décrire et de représenter l'Asie Mineure dans l'Antiquité en s'attachant essentiellement aux sources littéraires disponibles. Le second axe invite les participants à approcher les notions de gestion, de contrôle et d'appropriation des espaces anatoliens à une échelle plus régionale, du Taurus pisidien à l'Euphrate, en passant par les littoraux du Pont-Euxin. Ensuite l'étude historique et archéologique de plusieurs cités (Sagalassos, Antioche de Pisidie, Parion, Éphèse, Sinope) permet d'aborder la question des rapports entre les populations et leurs territoires, et d'insister sur la variété d'échanges culturels toujours renouvelés. Dans cette perspective, les chercheurs réunis choisissent enfin de présenter certains aspects religieux, linguistiques, économiques et culturels, lesquels conduisent à s'interroger sur les rapports entre les particularismes anatoliens et les manifestations de l'hellénisme, en privilégiant une approche historique ouverte, inscrite dans la longue durée.

These are questions that motivate "4E" theories of cognition (as being embodied, embedded, extended, enactive). In his take on that family of views, Hajo Greif first defends and refines a concept of information as primarily natural, environmentally embedded in character, which had been eclipsed by information-processing views of cognition. He continues with an inquiry into the cognitive bearing of some artefacts that are sometimes referred to as 'intelligent environments'. Without necessarily having much to do with Artificial Intelligence, such artefacts may ultimately modify our informational environments. With respect to human cognition, the most notable effect of digital computers is not that they might be able, or become able, to think but that they alter the way we perceive, think and act.     Description: Vor dem Hintergrund philosophischer und kognitionswissenschaftlicher Betrachtungen des Denkens als verkörpertem, erweitertem, umwelt- und handlungsgebundenem Prozess wird zunächst ein Konzept von Information als primär natürliche, objektive Beziehung in der Umwelt verteidigt und eine Theorie “informationaler Umwelten” entwickelt. In einem zweiten Schritt werden sogenannte “intelligente Umwelten” als Paradigma der technologischen Formbarkeit solcher informationaler Umwelten untersucht. Anders als im Fall der klassischen Künstlichen Intelligenz liegt der bemerkenswerteste mögliche Effekt dieser Technologien weniger darin, dass sie selbst denkfähig wären oder werden könnten, sondern dass sie die Art und Weise verändern, auf welche Menschen wahrnehmen, denken und handeln.

    Description: En tant que conception politique déterminant l’ensemble des relations extérieures d’un État, la neutralité est un phénomène récent. Ce n’est qu’à partir de la garantie de la « neutralité perpétuelle » par le Congrès de Vienne que la Confédération helvétique peut affirmer une véritable vocation à la neutralité. Mais cette dernière a pris corps auparavant, à partir des menaces que représentèrent les guerres européennes du XVIIe siècle pour la cohésion des ligues suisses. Par ailleurs, du XVe au XVIIIe siècle, un peu partout en Europe, des acteurs très différents tentent de limiter l’impact des guerres par de multiples pratiques de neutralisation. Dans les monarchies, ces pratiques témoignent de l’utilisation par des acteurs subalternes de marges de manœuvre entre leur propre prince et les puissances qui les menacent. Par rapport à une histoire de « la » neutralité au singulier, l’ample horizon géographique et chronologique dans lequel sont étudiées ces neutralités, au pluriel, constitue l’originalité du présent volume. Les pratiques de neutralisation, de sauvegarde et d’accommodement en temps de guerre de l’époque moderne sont étudiées dans une perspective européenne, abordant, outre le Corps helvétique, le Saint Empire, les monarchies française et espagnole, ainsi que les espaces maritimes atlantique et méditerranéen. Elles invitent à varier les approches et les points de vue sur plusieurs histoires croisées : histoire de la diplomatie et de la guerre, du pouvoir et de ses limites, histoire aussi des moyens dont disposent les populations pour préserver leurs intérêts jusque sous le régime de l’occupation militaire.

    Le principat d’Auguste : Réalités et représentations du pouvoir. Autour de la Res publica restituta (2021)

    Description: À la suite de la bataille d’Actium, Auguste est parvenu à fonder un régime politique durable, communément appelé principat, dont la nature continue à faire débat. L’apparition au début des années 20 av. J.-C. du thème de la Res publica restituta, à la fois slogan et programme politique qui faisaient d’Auguste le restaurateur de l’État romain, n’est pas le moindre des paradoxes. Si l’historiographie reste sensible aux ruptures qui résultaient de la mainmise sur l’État d’un seul homme et de sa famille, il y a place également pour une étude des continuités que le nouveau régime n’a cessé de mettre en avant à ses débuts. Les organisateurs du colloque de Nantes, Fr. Hurlet et B. Mineo, ont rassemblé une équipe internationale d’une vingtaine de chercheurs pour susciter un échange de points de vue sur le sujet entre littéraires, historiens, historiens de l’art et archéologues. Les auteurs augustéens – historien comme Tite-Live, poètes comme Virgile, Horace ou Ovide – ont été l’objet d’une attention particulière à travers l’étude de leur perception du nouveau régime et de la nature de leurs relations avec le prince ; l’enquête a été étendue aux auteurs postérieurs à Auguste qui ont traité de la naissance du principat (Tacite et Dion Cassius). Les épigraphistes et les numismates ont analysé la manière dont le nouveau régime cherchait à se présenter sur les inscriptions et les monnaies afin de mieux saisir toutes les subtilités du discours officiel. La mise en forme des pouvoirs impériaux et l’attitude de l’aristocratie au moment de la mise en place du principat ont fait également l’objet d’études spécifiques. Ont été prises en compte les images liées au nouveau pouvoir – monuments, demeure d’Auguste sur le Palatin, statues, reliefs, cérémonies religieuses – comme support matériel de l’idéologie impériale. Un tel faisceau de points de vue permet de mieux se représenter dans toute leur complexité les fondements du principat augustéen à sa naissance.

Si l’affrontement militaire est avant tout une épreuve humaine, il est aussi un défi intellectuel, la guerre se gagne par les hommes qui la font, mais aussi par ceux qui pensent les conditions de l’efficacité de l’outil militaire. Si elle est moyen de s’imposer dans un conflit, elle est aussi un facteur de paix par son poids dans les négociations internationales, pour interrompre ou éviter la guerre, et par l’action des officiers qui s’impliquent dans la diplomatie. Par l’intensité des moyens qu’elle nécessite, la guerre mobilise les sociétés bien au-delà du rétablissement de la paix. La figure du soldat interpelle les sociétés dans lesquelles ils continuent à vivre après l’expérience du combat qui fait d’eux des modèles à honorer autant que des individus traumatisés qui doivent se réinsérer parmi leurs contemporains. La réalité de la guerre ne ressort pas seulement de la récurrence des combats : artistes et intellectuels se l’approprient pour l’intégrer à leurs productions et à leurs réflexions. Faire et éviter la guerre, vivre et penser la guerre, quatre des domaines de recherche explorés au cours des trois dernières décennies par le professeur Jean-Pierre Bois, autant de perspectives autour desquelles ses amis et ses collègues se sont réunis pour lui rendre hommage en empruntant ses voies favorites.

    Description: La Renaissance a rêvé de la cité idéale, a bâti de nouvelles villes et en a refaçonné beaucoup à partir d'une réflexion politique et artistique revivifiée par l'exemple de l'Antiquité et la relecture des Anciens. Mais l'époque fut aussi marquée par une analyse de la grande ville et de la capitale, produite par des chorographes, par des penseurs comme Botero, l'un des théoriciens de la raison d'État ou par des commissions établies par le pouvoir politique. En effet, certaines capitales furent alors fondées ou déplacées par lui, en fonction des évolutions géopolitiques ou de l'affirmation de l'État moderne. L'analyse fonctionnaliste des réseaux urbains, qui définit la capitale par l'accumulation de populations attirées par la concentration des fonctions politiques, administratives, économiques, culturelles en un lieu ne rend que très imparfaitement compte de ce qu'est une capitale à la Renaissance. Une approche nominaliste montre leur inégale répartition sur l'espace européen et parfois la fragilité de leur établissement. La réputation héritée de l'histoire, la présence de rituels politiques, la résidence du prince, le lieu de réunion d'assemblées, la possession de telle ou telle institution politique, judiciaire, religieuse ou intellectuelle sont autant de critères pouvant illustrer la métropolité, mais qui ne sont pas systématiquement réunis en un même lieu. Cet ouvrage montre que s'il existe des capitales, il est difficile de dresser l'idéal-type d'une capitale de la Renaissance car les configurations politiques sont diverses dans une Europe qui compte des monarchies, des empires, des républiques urbaines ou cités-états, des monarchies composites… Aussi, loin d'une analyse exclusivement fonctionnaliste, sont retenues des capitales de la Renaissance qui ne le sont plus forcément aujourd'hui, invitant ainsi le lecteur à échapper à une histoire des capitales qui ne soit que le récit téléologique de celles qui le demeurent encore.

L’inscription dans le champ astronomique du XVIIIe siècle constitue une première entrée pour saisir une trajectoire scientifique d’abord ancrée dans des institutions prestigieuses de légitimation. Professeur au Collège de France, organisateur d’un réseau informel d’élèves qu’il forme lui-même, Lalande s’est toujours efforcé de construire des places fortes pour pratiquer l’astronomie. La Révolution lui donne l’occasion de mettre en œuvre ses idéaux organisationnels sous la forme du Bureau des longitudes qu’il imagine en point nodal de l’astronomie française. Le travail épistolaire, indispensable à Lalande pour maintenir son réseau de relations, offre une deuxième entrée pour retracer la trajectoire de l’astronome. Très tôt inséré dans l’espace européen des sciences, Jérôme Lalande use de sa correspondance pour amasser les observations, transmettre des mémoires, affermir ses positions institutionnelles et organiser les controverses.
