    Notes: This study examines the activities and congruence of positioning strategies in the UK store card sector. Using a triangulation research methodology, the results confirm the prevalence of challenging and aggressive branding activities. The findings identify "Service", "Value for money", and "The Brand Name" as the most popular positioning strategies pursued by Marks & Spencer Card brand. In the case of Harrods Card brand, "Top of the range" and "The Brand Name" are the two dominant positioning strategies employed. The study further uncovers congruence between the two card brands' marketing "communications" efforts and consumers' "perceived" strategies. However, there is no congruence between managers' "presumed" strategies and the brands' marketing "communications" efforts. More specifically, although positioning activities in "communications" are successfully recognized by the target group, managers' positioning "presumptions/intentions" are not clearly transmitted in "communications". Conclusions, managerial implications, limitations and future research directions are discussed.

    Notes: Unlike the traditional bricks-and-mortar marketplace, the online environment includes several distinct factors that influence brand trust. As consumers become more savvy about the Internet, the author contends they will insist on doing business with Web companies they trust. This study examines how brand trust is affected by the following Web purchase-related factors: security, privacy, brand name, word-of-mouth, good online experience, and quality of information. The author argues that not all e-trust building programs guarantee success in building brand trust. In addition to the mechanism depending on a program, building e-brand trust requires a systematic relationship between a consumer and a particular Web brand. The findings show that brand trust is not built on one or two components but is established by the interrelationships between complex components. By carefully investigating these variables in formulating marketing strategies, marketers can cultivate brand loyalty and gain a formidable competitive edge.

    Notes: Most pricing studies assume that firms have complete information about demand. In practice, managers must make decisions, given incomplete information about the demand for their own products as well as those of their rivals. This paper develops a duopoly pricing model in which firms market differentiated products in a world of uncertainty. Results show that the predictions of standard strategic pricing models may not hold when firms face parameter uncertainty and are risk-averse. Under well-defined conditions, there may be a "first-mover" disadvantage to the firm that attempts to be the Stackelberg price leader in the market, especially in a market where demand is highly uncertain. Interestingly, if parameter uncertainty is sufficiently high, it may even be necessary for the price leader to share market information with its rival. When firms are risk-averse, uncertainty generally decreases equilibrium prices and the variabilities of profits.

    Notes: The purpose of this research paper is to explore the pricing objectives that service companies pursue to set their prices and to examine the impact of market structure. An extensive review of the literature revealed the complete lack of any previous work aiming to empirically investigate the impact of market structure on the company's pricing behavior and pricing objectives. Thus, the value of the paper lies in the fact that it presents the first attempt to empirically examine this issue from a marketing perspective. In order to achieve research objectives, data were collected from 170 companies operating in six different services sectors in Greece through personal interviews. The findings of the study show that the companies seem to follow a hierarchy of pricing objectives where their main focus is on the maintenance of the existing customers and the attraction of new ones, in order to ensure their long-term position in the market without, however, disregarding financial considerations.

    Notes: One main concern regarding the use of reference prices in advertisements relates to the possibility of deception due to consumers' positive response towards exaggerated or implausible claims. This paper examines the moderating roles of a contextual variable-market price dispersion for a product category, and that of an individual level variable-need for cognition, in influencing consumer evaluation of reference prices across two experiments. The results support the hypothesized effects of need for cognition and demonstrate that, for low need, for cognition individuals, increasing the level of reference price results in positive effects on value perception and shopping intention.

    Notes: Price knowledge as a construct has been one of the top behavioral pricing themes in the last four decades, especially in the Anglo-American literature. In Germany, scientists have paid relatively little attention to this topic during the last 15 years - with some notable exceptions. Therefore, this study analyzes German consumers' price knowledge and, by doing so, replicates and extends existing international work. After reviewing earlier attempts at assessing the construct, a measure is developed for the price estimation error "PEE", based on explicit price knowledge stored in long-term memory. Results, including data from about 1,000 consumers on 69 products from a German retail chain, indicate that price knowledge in Germany is relatively low. Based on that observation, implications for the management are discussed.

    Notes: This paper investigates prices of consumer electronics sold on the Web by both online-only retailers (Dotcoms) and the online branches of multi-channel retailers (MCRs). Surprisingly, it finds that Dotcoms charge higher price than MCRs, a conclusion contradictory to the results of most of empirical studies. Also finds that the electronics prices decreased over the period of study in general, dropping about 0.6 percent per week, and the prices of MCRs and Dotcoms went down with time at a similar speed. Further, the prices across MCRs are 35.3 percent more dispersed than the prices across the Dotcoms based on full prices, and 33.1 percent more dispersed based on percentage prices. However, results show that price dispersion moved up with time in general, with no significant difference in the speeds between MCRs and Dotcoms.

    Notes: The accuracy of consumer price knowledge is dependent on numerous factors. This study examined the effect of some variables related to consumers' attitudes towards prices and some demographic variables on price knowledge. Results showed that consumers were more knowledgeable about the relationships between the prices of competitor brands than about the actual prices in themselves. When certain error margins were allowed, the differences between absolute and relative price knowledge were not as evident. In addition, the accuracy of consumer knowledge of prices was found to be dependent on how much importance they placed on price, and it influenced subjects' perceptions of themselves as shoppers. In this study, women and people with low income level were more knowledgeable about prices. The statistical effects and relationships between these variables were analyzed taking into account the economic, social, and cultural setting in which the research was conducted.

    Notes: The authors develop a logit modeling approach, designed for application to UPC scanner panel data, to assess the effects of coupon promotions on consumer brand choice. The effects of coupon promotions are captured via two measures: the prevailing level of availability and the prevailing face value of coupons for each brand. Both of these measures are derived from coupon redemptions of a separate sample of households. The approach captures both the advertising effect and the price discount incentive of a coupon. It also avoids drawbacks of previous choice models which have incorporated coupon effects by subtracting the value of a redeemed coupon from the price of the brand purchased. The authors illustrate their modeling approach on data for two product categories: catsup (light coupon usage) and liquid laundry detergent (heavy coupon usage). Findings are reported for coupon users and non-users as well as across latent segments.

    Notes: When considering a price decrease in response to competitive pressures or stagnating demand, management may ask how much additional volume must be sold at the new price to match the current profit level. This "iso-profit" pricing problem has been studied extensively for single items manufactured using one resource. This paper solves three realistic extensions of the problem: when two or more items share a resource, when multiple items share multiple resources, and when resource vendors offer quantity discounts. Findings are summarized in 12 points, many of which are counterintuitive.

    Notes: Central Queensland University (CQU) has used paper based distance education materials, such as course profiles, study guides and resource materials since 1971. The purpose of this exploratory study was to review three different approaches to online delivery and assessment currently being used in the Faculty of Business and Law, CQU, and to analyse the rates of take-up and involvement, and students' reactions generally, to the use of non-traditional forms of delivery and assessment. This study highlights that the key to success in this environment is accepting the constant demand to provide manageable and cost-effective courses whilst at the same time ensuring that the needs of a large and diverse group of students are met.     Notes: The growth of the Internet has greatly increased the demand for server-side programming courses at colleges and universities. Students enrolled in such courses must be provided with server-based accounts that support the technologies that they are learning. The process of creating, managing and removing large numbers of student server accounts is time consuming, error-prone, and can create security risks. This paper describes a Web-based file manager and editor program named ASPEN (Active Server Pages Editor.Net) that greatly simplifies server account management issues and provides a convenient Web interface for students to edit and execute their server-side programs.     Notes: Although many universities require courses in management information systems for their business majors, little information exists as to what objectives should be included in the course, and the course topics vary greatly across institutions. Differences in course objectives even exist within schools if multiple sections of the course are taught by different faculty. Typically, a significant portion of the class is devoted to database concepts. In many cases, the course requirements include developing a database for a small business. This database project can consume faculty time and resources, especially if student teams choose their own projects and no guidelines exist for faculty reference. In this paper, guidelines for developing a standardized database project that challenges students while freeing up faculty resources are presented. Experiences in dealing with these projects in both face-to-face and online classes at one university are detailed.

    Notes: Transmitting video over user datagram protocol (UDP) has been considered advantageous because it allows for discarding of packets in favor of retransmissions, and sender-controlled timing. Using UDP has been criticized because it allows video streams to consume more than their fair share of bandwidth, which is typically associated with the back-off behavior of transmission control protocol (TCP). TCP-friendly algorithms are meant as a middle path. However, UDP delivery to end systems may still be prevented by firewalls or for other reasons, and TCP must be used. This in turn suffers from bandwidth fluctuations. Investigates an architecture that separates the transfer of a video stream over long distances. Considers a proxy server to translate the traffic and two straightforward approaches for the translation of a layered video stream transmission from the TCP-friendly transport protocol to TCP. Does not expect that one of these two approaches is by itself suited for the task, but investigating them will provide insights into their basic functions and help in discovering appropriate modifications. For the investigation, an experimental approach was used where network behavior and content are emulated.

    Notes: The authors have developed the "Ethernet Speaker" (ES), a network-enabled single board computer embedded into a conventional audio speaker. Audio streams are transmitted in the local area network using multicast packets, and the ES can select any one of them and play it back. A key requirement for the ES is that it must be capable of playing any type of audio stream, independent of the streaming protocol, or the encoding used. The authors achieved this by providing a streaming audio server built using the kernel-based audio stream redirector (ASR) in the OpenBSD kernel. The ASR accepts input from any of the existing audio file players, or streaming audio clients. Since all audio applications have to be able to use the system audio driver, this system can accommodate any protocol or file format, provided that there exists some compatible player running under OpenBSD. This paper discusses the design and implementation of the server as an ASR, the streaming protocol developed for this application, and the implementation of the client.

    Notes: When assessing the potential benefits of using any new technology, it is essential that appropriate performance criteria are used and comparisons are made with the alternatives available. This paper reports on the development of criteria to help inform the process of deciding whether or not to adopt hybrid concrete construction (HCC) technology rather than more traditional alternatives. Following a thorough review of literature to identify a range of HCC performance criteria, their perceived importance was investigated via an opinion survey of experienced UK-based practitioners. The result of the analysis revealed that all criteria identified through literature were considered important, with "physical form and space" of a building, "meeting perceived needs" and "construction cost and safety" being the more important performance criteria influencing the selection of an appropriate structural frame. This paper describes the potential practical application of these criteria to assist the early structural frame decision-making process.

    Notes: This paper investigates perceptions on ethics amongst surveyors working in Hong Kong. Objectives of the study are to develop an organisational ethics model, to examine the dominant and significantly different ethical climate and culture types amongst private- and public-sector organisations that employ surveyors, and to determine any effects of the existence of ethical codes. It is postulated that ethical behaviours have an impact on the final project outcome. The empirical work is of survey design and the data are analysed using principal component factor analysis, correlation and analysis of variance. The results yield a number of factors and the strength of factors present differs between public and private organisations with a large number of respondents indicating uncertainty of the presence of ethical codes.

    Notes: Construction-oriented discrete-event simulation often faces the problem of defining uncertain information input, such as subjectivity in selecting probability distributions that result from insufficient or lack of site productivity data. This paper proposes incorporation of fuzzy set theory with discrete-event simulation to handle the vagueness, imprecision and subjectivity in the estimation of activity duration, especially when insufficient or no sample data are available. Based upon an improved activity scanning simulation algorithm, a fuzzy distance ranking measure is adopted in fuzzy simulation time advancement and event selection for simulation experimentation. The uses of the fuzzy activity duration and the probability distribution-modeled duration are compared through a series of simulation experiments. It is observed that the fuzzy simulation outputs are arrived at through only one cycle of fuzzy discrete-event simulation, still they contain all the statistical information that are produced through multiple cycles of simulation experiments when the probability distribution approach is adopted.

In particular, the study focuses on the impact of a parent brand on the trial of the extension and the reciprocal effect of a successful trial of new brand extensions positioned horizontally and vertically on the parent brand. Results show positive influence of the parent brand on the trial of the extension. Successful trial also helped the parent brand on a reciprocal basis, particularly among the non-loyal users and non-users of the parent brand. Another finding is the moderating effect of category positioning on the magnitude of the reciprocal effect of the brand extension on the parent brand. There is also an indication that prior parent brand experience acts as a moderator of reciprocal effects.

    Notes: Mobile devices are generally designed for use in low-bandwidth environments and therefore have limited ability to handle e-mail attachments. As such, these devices often have to be complemented by using a type of electronic agents, known as attachment handling agents (AHAs), which convert the contents of the attachments to a bandwidth-conserving text-form that is then sent to the mobile device for viewing. The purpose of this study is to assess whether AHA usage would improve an individual employee's perceived work-performance, measured by a multidimensional set of factors. The participants in the survey are employees at an F1000 Canadian company, all of whom have adopted a mobile communication device. Results indicate that AHA usage has a positive impact on productivity and customer satisfaction.

    Notes: Much previous research on improving information retrieval applications has focused on developing entirely new systems with advanced searching features. Unfortunately, most users seldom utilize these advanced features. This research explores the use of a software agent that assists the user during the search process. The agent was developed as a separate, stand-alone component to be integrated with existing information retrieval systems. The performance of an information retrieval system with the integrated agent was subjected to an evaluation with 30 test subjects. The results indicate that agents developed using both results from previous user studies and rapidly modeling user information needs can result in an improvement in precision. Implications for information retrieval system design and directions for future research are outlined.

    Notes: An archive is a file containing several related files. Many Internet resources, such as freeware, shareware and trail software, are often packaged into archives for easy installation and taking. Additionally, thousands of users search for archives and download them from different sources everyday. In this paper, previous research on archive downloading is extended via proxy cache to support archive searching. Internet proxy cache servers are used to gather a significant number of Web pages, detect those that contain archive links, and then use the obtained data to search archives by description or filename. Two schemes, iterative and backtracking, are proposed to obtain Web pages with archive links. The experimental results indicate that the precision that both of the schemes can achieve is about the same; however, the backtracking scheme reduces the number of checked pages by a factor of 26. Finally, a real system was implemented to demonstrate the proposed approaches.

However, since it is difficult to verify the identity of the student through a simple user ID and password system on the client side, performance evaluation through test and examination through the Internet is still in its infancy. To overcome this main hurdle, a system has been designed and developed where a camera at the client computer is used to capture the student's face and posture at random intervals during the test. The captured images are stored at the server and can be used to verify the identity of the person taking the test if the need arises.     Notes: The objective in this study is to evaluate the mediating role of personal factors affecting the Web behaviour and in turn the length of Web sessions as a highly-subjective variable among individuals. This could be used to explain and improve the users' experience of being and acting in the Web. The present study uses a flow- versus goal-directed theoretical and practical approach to determine the influence of personal factors on Web behaviours and session lengths. A field study of 209 Web users was conducted to validate measures used to operationalise model variables and to test the hypothesised network of relationships using partial least squares (PLS) as a second-generation multivariate analysis technique. The study findings indicate that experiential behaviour, followed by goal-directed behaviour, has the largest influence on the lengths of Web sessions.

Such images tend to have been formed over a long period of time and result from exposure to communication processes largely outside marketing's core sphere of influence such as education, literature and the arts. Images formed in this way are referred to in this paper as organic images. The research used the repertory grid technique developed by George A. Kelly in the context of Personal Construct Theory combined with depth interviews to elicit the attributes associated with the images of 25 destinations in the UK. The study identified 11 categories of image attribute. Those associated with a destination's history, heritage and culture were found to be the second most salient category. The implications of these findings are discussed.

    Notes: The evidence for the reciprocal effects of a brand extension on its parent brand is unclear. An experiment was conducted to investigate the impact of an extension's quality, its fit with the parent brand, and parent brand dominance, on parent brand evaluation. The paper finds that extension quality and fit did not dilute parent brand attitude; in other words, an extension either left parent brand attitude unchanged or enhanced it moderately. The only effect of brand dominance was that it enhanced parent brand attitude when the extension was a good fit. Further, the introduction of an extension, regardless of its fit or quality, enhanced parent brand attitude for a durable product relative to a control group. It seems that parent brand attitudes are held strongly enough to resist the new information that is associated with a newly introduced brand extension.

    Notes: The internal brand refers to the employee perspective of a brand. It is an area of focus that has received scant attention from both academics and practitioners, particularly in the charity sector. This study, by contrast, seeks to redress this imbalance by exploring senior management views of the internal brand in some of the UK's leading charities, those whose level of voluntary income makes them one of the 100 highest "earners" in the UK. Compared with classical, product-led definitions, the internal brand proved more complex, comprising four fundamental components: the functional, symbolic, behavioural, and experiential. The study demonstrated several uses for the internal brand including unifying the workforce around a common purpose, acting as a catalyst for change and contributing to the professionalisation of the charity sector. "Managing by brand" was thought to imply a brand-centric focus that allowed senior managers to manage beyond the legal and organisational requirements of the job. It was noted that the internal brand should work in tandem with the external brand, an ideal referred to as "joined-up" branding or the management of consistency across all points of interaction.

The sample consists of 128 young Chinese Singaporeans. Unlike prior research done in Western countries, the respondents in this study were more likely to buy cause-linked brands for practical than for hedonic products. They were also more likely to pay a price premium for cause-linked practical products. This difference is attributed to the Confucian values that are espoused by the Chinese. Additionally, finds that specifying the amount donated to the cause increases the likelihood of purchasing cause-linked brands that are priced at 10 to 25 percent premiums over comparable alternatives.     Notes: The aim of this study is to find out the effect of pricing on the diffusion of cellular subscriptions in Finland. There is a lack of studies on the effect of (telecommunications) service pricing on its diffusion. In the present study, a modified logistic model is applied for estimating the impact of price on the diffusion. The effect of cellular tariffs and cellular phone prices on the market potential and the diffusion rate are evaluated. Whereas almost all previous studies focusing on durables suggest that price affects either the market potential or the diffusion rate, the results of this study indicate that cellular call tariffs and cellular phone prices are not significant predictors of diffusion of cellular subscriptions. It is thus concluded that the logistic diffusion model might implicitly capture the somewhat constant price decline of cellular communications.

    Notes: The marketing phenomenon known as the double jeopardy (DJ) effect has continued to intrigue marketing scholars and practitioners over the last four decades. It is often found that, vis-à-vis the more popular brands, the less popular brands not only attract fewer customers but these customers buy these brands less frequently. The term "double jeopardy" is used to express this twin disadvantage faced by the less popular brands. Marketing researchers have shown that the DJ effect extends to many product categories (e.g. toothpaste or coffee), media (e.g. radio and television), and distribution channels (e.g. individual stores). Attitudinal measures are developed for both brand penetration and its frequency of use: two key elements used to measure the DJ effect. The aim is to provide some answers to an important question for retailers: How profitable is using odd prices expressed in Euros instead of in the old currency? Results show that consumers, sometimes, prefer round prices rather than odd-ending ones, although the latter elicits a discounted-price image more than the corresponding round one. Moreover, consumers tend to underestimate odd prices during perception and to convert them into Lire through an approximation heuristic strategy. In certain choice sets, odd prices are likely to affect the consumers' heuristics.

    Notes: A major theme for studies in international marketing is whether marketing programs and processes can be generalized across countries. This study tests the generalizability of a model that predicts consumers' perception of value based upon extrinsic cues - such as brand name, price, retailer reputation, and country of origin - and their perceptions of quality, sacrifice, and risk. The study extends the perceived value model specified by Agarwal and Teas and tested in the USA. The results of this study, based on an experiment conducted in Sweden, suggest that while the overall structure of the model is supported across countries, the relative importance of the extrinsic cues may vary across countries.

    Notes: This case of a Weyerhaeuser business unit's use of the military's methodologies provides an example for businesses that are faced with a daunting challenge to develop and execute strategies in a complex, rapidly changing business environment, when timely implementation is an important key to success. The goal of the industrial segment of Weyerhaeuser Building Materials (WBM) division was to accelerate innovation and growth in a stagnant market after two previous, unsuccessful attempts. The complexity of the task was large: 70 geographically dispersed locations and decision makers, new matrix organization, and a multi-market environment in 12 regions. The industrial segment of WBM developed a revenue-growth initiative and accelerated its execution by applying the fast-cycle methodology of Desert Storm strategists in the 1991 military air campaign. The new strategy completely repositioned the business.

Based in a consideration of the policy frameworks for rural Scotland, and of the food and tourism sectors especially (both prioritised by Scottish Enterprise and Highlands & Islands Enterprise as key sectors), this paper presents a critical evaluation of how value is construed through an examination of current case studies of Scottish quality food production and promotion. The paper considers how the promotion of particular signifiers of "added value" has implications for how regionality, rurality, quality and Scottishness are all defined.

    Notes: The spinel NiFe2O4 has been identified as being a potentially successful anti-corrosion ceramic that can be used in aluminium electrolysis under molten salt corrosive conditions (970°C). The evaluation and fabrication processing of NiFe2O4 has been studied in this paper. According to the analysis and comparison of material properties, it has been concluded that fabrication technology for making anti-corrosion electrode material would not be exceptionally difficult and therefore that the material has a strong potential for use in this service.

    Notes: The pitting corrosion of copper in chloride solution has been studied using potentiostatic polarisation and surface analysis techniques. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results enabled conclusions to be drawn about the nature of the film formed in different chloride concentrations. In dilute chloride solutions (C=10-3?M), XPS proved the existence of Cu2O film on the copper surface. It was found that, depending on the chloride content, pitting of copper was evident only after the formation of a protective film of Cu2O. A current-time trend plot showed the onset of fluctuations, which were dependent on the NaCl content. On the other hand, introduction of O2 into the solution during prepolarisation time period increased the current value of the fluctuations at the same concentration of NaCl in comparison with the freely aerated solution. These results, together with the surface analysis, confirm the role of chloride ion on the mechanism of pitting attack on copper metal.

    Notes: The sulphidation behaviour of high contraction (HC) and low contraction (LC) chromium plated steel was studied in sulphur with a partial pressure of 1?atm at 1, 3, 5 and 7?h and 0.1 and 0.01?atm at 5?h. The temperature was 600°C throughout the work. It was found that HC and LC chromium plating imparted significant sulphidation resistance to steel. It should be mentioned that by increasing sulphidation time and sulphur partial pressure, the hardness of chromium coating decreased. LC chromium coating had a lower thermal shock resistance than the HC coating. Thus, it was concluded that the HC chromium coating had the better sulphidation resistance.

    Notes: A study was undertaken to investigate the isothermal oxidation behaviour of Ni-Cr binary alloys with 10, 20 and 30?wt per cent Cr exposed in air for 50?h at 1,000°C. Analytical transmission electron microscopy along with light microscopy and X-ray diffraction were used to characterise the oxide scale. It was observed that the scaling behaviour exhibited by the Ni-Cr alloys changes from generally "non-protective" to "protective" as their Cr content increases from 10 to 30?wt per cent. The Ni-10Cr alloy formed a continuous network of NiO leading to scales of high thickness while Ni-30Cr exhibited only a-Cr2O3 at its surface. The Ni-20Cr alloy exhibited all three oxide phases and an intermediate scaling behaviour.

    Notes: A kind of novel heterocyclic bisquaternary ammonium salt (MBQA) was successfully synthesised with metronidazole as matrix and dichloroethyl ether as the link agent. Weight loss measurement, potentiodynamic polarisation curves, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy were used to evaluate the corrosion inhibiting performance of MBQA in simulated oilfield water. Experimental data revealed that MBQA acted as an inhibitor in the acidic environment and, furthermore, the compound was a mixed-type inhibitor. It was found that inhibition efficiency increased with an increase in MBQA concentration at different temperatures. The process of inhibition was attributed to the formation of an adsorbed film on the metal surface, which protected the metal against corrosive agents.

    Notes: Coatings with outstanding chemical and physical properties can be obtained from two-pack formulations without stoving. The epoxy resin was cured with different amine-based compounds, such as polyamide (PA), the aniline copolymer of triethanolamine titanate and aniline formaldehyde. The thermal resistance properties of the cured films were analysed using the thermo-gravimetric method. This study also examined the effect of coating resistance of 3 per cent sodium chloride solution by means of electrochemical impedance measurements. Coatings that included the epoxy triethanolamine titanate showed superior behaviour, compared to the other two systems tested. This hardener can be recommended instead of using conventional PA and polyamidoamide hardeners for epoxy two-pack systems that are to be used to protect the steel structures from highly corrosive chemical and marine environments.

    Notes: The inhibition effects of sodium silicate and polyphosphate on corrosion of carbon steel in a potable water supply have been studied using weight loss, electrochemical impedance and Tafel polarization measurements. In the water supply under test there were sufficient calcium ions, (220?ppm), to form the normal polyphosphates salts, which is a requisite for good protection. It was concluded that the inhibition efficiency of polyphosphate was higher than that of silicate. The synergistic inhibition effects of polyphosphate on the inhibition of silicate were studied. The results illustrated that silicates and polyphosphates can be useful as corrosion inhibitors for reducing the corrosion of carbon steel in potable water supply distribution systems. The optimal concentration for silicate alone was determined to be 11?ppm and for polyphosphate alone was 8?ppm. The optimum ratio of concentration for sodium silicate to sodium polyphosphate was 4?:?3.

    Notes: In this investigation, the inhibitory effect of a new synthesised tetra-dentate Schiff-base, bis-(2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde) 1,6-hexadiamine (A1), on the corrosion of carbon steel in 1?M HCl and 0.5?M H2SO4 media solutions was studied using various techniques including electrochemical impedance spectroscopy polarisation curves and weight loss. The new compound was shown to be a very good inhibitor and had better behaviour in 1?M HCl than was the case in 0.5?M H2SO4. Potentiodynamic polarisation tests showed that this inhibitor had both cathodic and anodic action. Changes in Tafel and impedance parameters (Icorr, Rct and Cdl) indicated that the absorbed protective film grows with increasing exposure time and concentration of inhibitor. The maximum inhibition efficiency was approximately 97 per cent and 95 per cent at 100?ppm (A1) in 1?M HCl and 0.5?M H2SO4. The adsorption of this inhibitor on a carbon steel surface in both acidic media followed Langmuir adsorption isotherm behaviour.

    Notes: Specimens of 304 stainless steel with various martensite contents were prepared by a low temperature (-70°C) elongation method. Optical microscopy and transmission electron micrography were used to study the phase structure of the samples. A simulated occluded cell (OC) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were used to study the chemical and the electrochemical changes within pits on 304 stainless steel containing the different martensite contents. The EIS results showed that the martensite phase decreased not only the solution resistance in pit, but also the polarization resistance value between metal and solution in pit. The composition of the passive film in OC solution was studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It was observed that martensite transformation was a very important factor in changing the composition of the passive film. The martensite phase destroyed the integrality and compactness of the passive film. For these reasons, pit propagation in Type 304 stainless steel was accelerated with increasing martensite content.

    Notes: This paper presents the key-results from a two-year research project which focused on the motivation and developmental preferences of high flyers. High flyers were found to have a particularly strong desire to be in a position of authority and control, but their concerns were mainly about working to the best of their ability and making efforts to master new skills. They were found to be more motivated by competition with themselves than by competition with others. Surprisingly, they were no more motivated by the desire for material and financial rewards than the general population. The research also asked which development tools high flyers had found most useful. Mentoring was considered the most valuable, with job rotation and 360° feedback also rated very high. Commonly used development processes, such as career development resources and technical training, were viewed unfavourably by a significant proportion of the respondents.

    Notes: This article provides human resource professionals and managers with an insight into the under representation of women/ethnic minorities at senior management level in UK organisations and the issues involved in increasing diversity in leadership. It describes three leadership studies carried out by Pearn Kandola covering: barriers to the career progress of ethnic minorities; differences in perception of male and female managerial success; and changing leadership behaviour. The research was conducted via literature reviews and interviews with HR/diversity specialists, senior managers and ethnic minority employees. The findings highlight the individual and organisational barriers facing ethnic minority employees and the differences in attribution of male and female managerial success. It underlines the need for diversity policies to encompass development and progression, as well as recruitment, and for skills development. Although further quantitative research is needed, the findings raise questions about underlying stereotypes and bias and discrimination when developing and implementing appraisal systems. Practical suggestions are made regarding behaviour change and policy review.

    Notes: Within the majority of organisations, e-learning is now an accepted means of increasing skills and knowledge across the enterprise. Early adopters no longer think of themselves and their organisations as pioneers of a new and unproven method of training. For the most part they have seamlessly integrated e-learning into their training strategy along with all the other methods of delivering training. Even those organisations that waited until e-learning was proven are now enjoying the many benefits that e-learning brings. However, whilst much has been made of the benefits to the organisation of e-learning, there has been little, if any, qualitative investigation into the attitudes and views of the users themselves. SkillSoft embarked on an ambitious project to interview a broad spectrum of over 200 employees, across a range of organisations, in over 14 countries across EMEA. This article details the main findings of the research and shares the best practices adopted by organisations that have enjoyed e-learning success.

    Notes: Having a great e-learning strategy and having great e-learning programs are just no guarantee of success. Without a clear and well-thought-out implementation strategy and plan, one's e-learning efforts will most likely fall far short of one's goals, learners' needs and management expectations. What often gets in the way of successful implementation are the myths that have seemingly become e-learning folklore. In this article nine of these myths are explored, along with how they impact one and one's organization. Ensuring the real return on one's e-learning investment requires not only that one dispels these myths, but also that one clarifies what can and should be expected. Expectations, although less measurable than hard investments, are most often far more important. Expectations drive decisions. Expectations drive behavior. And expectations drive results.

    Notes: In today's climate organisations increasingly need to recognise, harness and manage diversity. Equal opportunities legislation and policy, first developed in the 1970s, came about to redress past wrongs and to ensure equality of opportunity regardless of race, gender, disability, sexual orientation and faith. Managing diversity is founded on the premise that harnessing difference will create a productive environment in which everyone feels valued, where their talents are used and organisational goals are met. Diversity and ensuring equality of opportunity can be misunderstood. They are sometimes thought to be a politically correct requirement that does not really work. Equal opportunities policy focuses on being fair, but does not take the extra step of harnessing diversity to enhance business. Good diversity policy not only reduces the negatives, such as bullying, disputes, low morale, and sometimes litigation. It will also bring in extra talent, new perspectives, learning, and limitless opportunities for innovation. A case study with the London Fire Brigade shows a creative approach in diversity workshops.

    Notes: Matrix structures are increasingly used in organisations as they become more complex and as the pace of change increases. They are similar to project management arrangements, although matrix structures may be a permanent feature. Matrix structures, like project management, involve the creation and management of multi-disciplinary teams. The team leaders have a dual reporting relationship. For the structures to work effectively they should only be introduced when appropriate and even then after careful planning. An important aspect is the training of multi-disciplinary team leaders. However, it can also be crucial to ensure that those other key members of management who need to monitor and support matrix structures are properly selected and have received appropriate management training.

    Notes: It is quite common today for teams to use facilitators to expedite group process and help the teams reach desired goals. As the use of facilitators becomes widespread, however, people called in as facilitators may find themselves also being expected to serve as leaders, mediators, and/or instructors' to name only a few of the combined roles that exist. Some of this confusion over the duties of the facilitator arises because people use the term "facilitate" rather loosely to cover a variety of activities. In this paper the authors discusses the definition of facilitation, the differing goals of basic and developmental facilitation, interventions techniques and tools that might be used, facilitator skills needed, and desired outcomes. I also raise questions related to each of these areas that might improve the chances of having a desirable outcome for all involved in the facilitation.

    Notes: Local authorities are currently undergoing one of the biggest periods of organisational change in their entire history. The drivers are twofold; legislation from central government and a need to be more accountable to their electorate and what is more, the timescale is extremely aggressive. Change is one of the most disruptive processes that any organisation can go through and one of the biggest traps in managing change is underestimating the resistance of the people whom the change affects. Involving people in the planning and implementation process reduces the risk of resistance and offers them a sense of control over the transformation taking place. States recent research conducted with some of the UK's leading County Councils shows that implementing an effective change management strategy can dramatically reduce the time and cost of transition. It will also result in a stronger, more focussed and more cohesive organisation.

    Notes: Good does not equal great and all organisations need great leaders. Recently, concepts such as analysing successful leaders and building leaders' strengths have generated a lot of enthusiasm in the leadership development community. There is now a better understanding of what differentiates "great" leaders from others, offering new avenues for developing more great leaders. Previous leadership development efforts tended to focus on improving the performance of our worst managers and often delivered mixed results. This study of the 360-degree assessments of about 1,000 managers reveals that an emphasis on building strengths is as much as eight times more effective than correcting weaknesses and can improve business results as much as 80 percent. The research builds on a very powerful case for managers to improve their overall leadership effectiveness and for the chief financial officer to fully fund the development efforts.

    Notes: We all know that people make things happen and while technology brings some truly great advances it is still just a facilitator. We need to move from the technology and information revolutions to the people's revolution. We need to work far more effectively through the process of implementing significant change in the workplace because the major cause of the failure of so many change initiatives can only be poor management. Many people in the workforce do not know what is expected of them - what they were required to do. They turn-off. These are the people that management has failed because the ultimate responsibility for lack of effective leadership in any organisation rests with the senior executive management. While much has been and is being said and written about intellectual capital and knowledge management the recording and retention of the knowledge and experience of people who leave is increasing in importance to organisations around the world. During a period when there is great pressure to reduce enterprise overhead costs we are seeing the creation of yet another corporate role - that of knowledge manager. Whether this is a transitional role or one of long term substances remains to be seen.

    Notes: Perception gaps between the leader and follower demotivate the follower, impair the business relationship between them and reduce the business performance of both. There are two gaps in perception. The first is between the conscious intent of the leader and the manifestation of that intent. Key causes are stress, subconscious intent or poor communication by the leader. The second gap is between manifestation of intent by the leader and the impact on the follower. The causes here are the environment in which the communication occurs and the poor listening skills or mindset of the follower.     Notes: Much of the hype associated with the impact of electronic business is associated with the business to business (B2B) model. Analysts believe that enormous cost savings and efficiencies can be achieved through the utilisation of e-procurement, a component of the B2B model. The role of procurement and the emerging use of large information systems to conduct e-procurement is analysed and presented with the results of a survey of 38 major Australian organisations. The current direct and indirect procurement practices of the sample organisations will be analysed together with an analysis of the eprocurement drivers and barriers. The main results show that direct procurement is heavily dependant upon traditional practices whilst indirect procurement is more likely to use "e" practices. Small-medium organisations are more nimble at adopting e-procurement practices. Technical issues dominate e-procurement barriers, with cost factors dominating e-procurement drivers.

    Notes: The marketing literature has emphasised the importance of marketing orientation as a means of achieving organisational objectives. A number of studies that have examined the marketing orientation and business performance relationship have found mixed results culminating in inconclusive evidence. This paper examines the marketing practices and investigates the marketing strategy-business performance relationship across logistics companies in the Asia-Pacific region. The exploratory analysis suggests a positive relationship between market segmentation and performance. Differentiation and market orientation do not seem to be significantly associated with improved performance, although cross-functional customer focus shows a significant relationship. Further discriminant analysis of the significant predictor variables suggests that two variables, viz. market segmentation and positioning, and cross-functional customer focus are useful in differentiating between high and low performers. Managerial and further research implications for this increasingly important industry in the Asia-Pacific region are discussed.

    Notes: A framework for evaluating public opinion towards franchising is proposed and empirically tested in an emerging market, India. Franchising in an emerging market was selected as the context because - (1) future growth is likely to come from newly emerging markets, (2) franchising is primarily seen as a foreign concept in emerging markets and has attracted its fair share of attention, both positive and negative. The results indicate that people evaluate franchising using four key factors - well being of small businesses, socio-economic, socio-cultural well being, and employment opportunity. This study further investigates the relationship between these factors and patronage behaviour. Some of these factors were associated with patronage behaviour and the associated residual feeling. Clearly, in order to succeed in emerging and developing markets, the franchising industry must pay heed to public opinion.

    Notes: We describe the application of a nested logit function for modelling consumer brand choice using household transaction data from the Indian market. This is unique since it is one of the first attempts to integrate disparate consumer information sources available at various levels of aggregation towards developing a prediction model for brand market share in India. We test the usefulness of the model for forecasting brand market share in the premium detergents market in Mumbai, India. The results of the model building exercise reveal the importance of advertising, specifically the role of ad message in influencing brand choice. It is concluded that such modelling initiatives show significant returns for market planning exercises in developing markets. However, the need for streamlining the collection of market data and its subsequent organization in a form that can help develop more portent prediction models is apparent.

    Notes: This paper aims at understanding the firm-specific determinants of logistics outsourcing in a transitional economy. Some hypotheses are made and tested based on a survey conducted in 2002. The results show that factors such as financial strength, production and industrial type, management level at which the logistics decision is made can significantly affect outsourcing decisions. Other factors such as number of employees and ownership type are considered as well. Some of our findings are different from previous studies that target at developed countries. Implications for practitioners and areas for future research are considered at the end.

    Notes: This article reports a study using respondents from three different cultures - traditional Americans, Hispanics, and Taiwanese - to assess the reliabilities of measures assessing 29 consumer constructs used in various studies reported in major marketing journals. In general, these measures were designed for use with a traditional American sample and are not reported to have been used with other cultural samples. Results indicate that for respondents who demonstrate a certain level of English language fluency, regardless of where they are from, these measures perform reliably across cultures. Thus, under certain circumstances, the fears that researchers have about instrument reliability across cultures may be largely ungrounded.

    Notes: Much has been made of the importance of the Indian market as the future of the software industry. However, according to mainstream internationalisation theory the market in India may be seen as a less preferential market to other higher growth and low cost markets such as China and Russia. India will have to move higher up the value chain if it is to maintain this favourable position. This article sets out to explain the main reasons why India is proving attractive for foreign direct investment by examining theories of internationalisation and drawing on key FDI data. Contrasts are also made with other important markets including China and Philippines. The article then goes on to examine industry specific variables.     Notes: The study addresses the effect of product usage, satisfaction derived out of the same and the brand switching behaviour in several product categories while looking at the product involvement level in the Indian marketplace. A fair amount of work has been done in the area of customer satisfaction and loyalty and many customer satisfaction indexes are available in the market using different variables and characteristics. The study attempts to understand the brand switching behaviour of the customers and its relation not with just satisfaction derived out of the product but also connects to the usage pattern of the customers and product involvement. Five categories (vehicles, television, soap, hair oil, and ice cream), involving varying levels of involvement were chosen. Cluster analysis was used to understand the grouping of the characteristics across the categories and their effect on brand switching behaviour in correlation with satisfaction and involvement level. It was observed that product usage and related level of satisfaction fail to explain the brand switching behaviour. Product involvement was found to have moderate impact on readiness to switch. The study emphasises that marketers will have to keep a constant eye to understand the usage pattern associated with their products and the satisfaction derived out of it and also at how customers involve themselves with the product to lessen the brand switching behaviour among their customers.

    Notes: The spinel-type pigments of a general formula corresponding to AB2O4 containing as A the Mg2+ or Zn2+ ions and as B the Fe3+ or Al3+ ions or combinations of both the A and B were prepared and investigated with respect to their anticorrosive action as pigments in organic coatings. For the same purposes, comparative pigments, known for their efficiency as the metal-corrosion inhibiting ingredients in similar formulations, were used. Further evaluation was carried out on the properties of condensed phosphates as anticorrosion pigments. The results obtained showed the high anticorrosion action of the spinel-type pigments.

    Notes: Stainless steel 316 was coated with CeO2 and Y2O3 modified aluminide and titanium aluminide coatings. The coatings were prepared by the pack cementation method and the high temperature oxidation behaviour of the coatings was investigated in an atmosphere containing a limited supply of air. The performance of the coatings was studied by measuring oxidation kinetics, and by scanning electron microscopic techniques. The oxidation rates of these coatings were reduced in the presence of CeO2 and Y2O3 due to better adherence of their oxide scales.
