Notes: For corporations engaged in e-commerce, the Web serves as their primary interface with customers. Consequently, quality Web site design is a critical success factor for corporations with an e-commerce strategy. However, no comprehensive and coherent set of evaluation criteria exists that corporations and researchers can use to examine Web sites. This paper fills this gap by proposing Web site evaluation criteria and applying these criteria to different industry groups within Korea. Based on the literature survey, six categories of Web site evaluation criteria are defined: business function; corporation credibility; contents reliability; Web site attractiveness; systematic structure; and navigation. Using these criteria, Web sites in 12 industries were evaluated to determine if there are differences in Web site design between industries. The objective was to determine differences between industries which may provide information for benchmarking purposes. The results show significant differences in the design of Web sites across these different industry groups.

Notes: The digital economy is an economic sector that includes goods and services, whose development, manufacturing, merchandising or supply depend on critical digital technologies. The digital economy can be conceptualized into four different subsectors; on the one hand, it consists of infrastructure and applications and, on the other, electronic commerce and new intermediaries. This natural structure can be directly traced to how business generates revenues. The aim of this paper is to explain what is understood today by digital economy and to identify its dimensions and impact on the firm. For this purpose, it is necessary to develop its theoretical basis. In the second part of this paper, we refer to the results of an empirical research in the Spanish context.

Notes: With the proliferation of objectionable materials (e.g. pornography, violence, drugs, etc.) available on the WWW, there is an urgent need for effective countermeasures to protect children and other unsuspecting users from exposure to such materials. Using pornographic Web pages as a case study, this paper presents a thorough analysis of the distinguishing features of such Web pages. The objective of the study is to gain knowledge on the structure and characteristics of typical pornographic Web pages so that effective Web filtering techniques can be developed to filter them automatically. In this paper, we first survey the existing techniques for Web content filtering. A study on the characteristics of pornographic Web pages is then presented. The implementation of a Web content filtering system that combines the use of an artificial neural network and the knowledge gained in the analysis of pornographic Web pages is also given.

Notes: Image interactivity allows the customer to create and manipulate visual images of a product on a Web site. We measured the effect of exposure to an image interactivity function from an apparel retailer's Web site on approach responses towards the retailer. The image interactivity function from the Web site allowed participants to mix and match apparel product images to help determine how well they coordinated. Dependent variables used to tap approach responses were attitude towards the online store, willingness to purchase from the online store, willingness to return to the online store, probability of spending more time than planned shopping on the site, and likelihood of patronizing the online retailer's bricks-and-mortar store. We employed a repeated-measures experimental design with 103 subjects. Paired t-tests provided empirical support for the effect of image interactivity on enhancing approach responses towards the retailer. However, differences in approach responses existed between males and females. Marketing implications were provided.

Notes: The growth of Internet usage, spurred by rapidly advancing network technologies, has been bringing about broad changes in customer behaviors related to the Internet, attitudes toward the traditional mass media, and satisfaction. This study attempts to investigate what types of changes have been made in Korea due to the transition of the networking environment. According to the findings, Internet users with a high-speed Internet service system tend to enjoy various kinds of services, including e-mail, and depend less on the traditional media, such as TV and radio, for information and entertainment. They also have an increased level of satisfaction in the dimension of convenience.

Notes: Traditionally, file transfer protocol (FTP) servers are major archive providers and users apply the Archie server to locate FTP archives. With the extreme popularity of the WWW, Web servers are now important archive providers and users download archives via HTTP. To reduce HTTP traffic, proxy cache servers are deployed on the Internet. However, we find the hit rate of archives in cache servers is quite low. This study proposes a combination of caching and better searching mechanisms to alleviate the problem. We enable a proxy server to automatically collect WWW and FTP archives from its cache, organize them in the form of an FTP directory, and then offer the directory list to the Archie. Accordingly, users can find archives on WWW and FTP servers through the Archie, and they can directly download archives from the proxy server, thus improving the reuse of cached archives. A system was implemented and operated in a real environment to evaluate the approach and results are discussed.

Notes: It is stated that the new version of the IP protocol, IPv6, is the answer to the majority of the problems that were raised during the enormous expansion of the Internet and its transformation to a global communication platform with commercial scope. At the same time it is also stated that IPv6 dominance will not be easy and there will be a period when the two versions of the protocol will co-exist. In this paper we describe some of the main transition mechanisms that can be deployed in order to facilitate the transition process to the new version of the IP protocol. Furthermore, the presented mechanisms are discussed regarding their usability, usefulness and manageability. Describes the way some of these mechanisms were applied to the Greek Research & Technology Network (GRNET).

Notes: In this paper, a Web portal is presented for multicast communication management, providing fully automatic service management with integrated provisioning of hardware equipment. The portal is based on an open and configurable object-oriented framework, that allows self-provisioning by the user and the seamless integration with all types of multicast application software. As its topological structure is ideally suited for multicasting, and it allows the accurate control of the transmission bandwidth, the portal focuses currently on satellite as a delivery medium. The software architecture, the implementation, and the application usage of the Web portal for multicast delivery are described.

Notes: Online education has emerged as one of the major channels for dissemination of learning materials. As more and more organizations offer online distance learning courses, the security concerns of these online education systems become more and more critical, especially when the organizations rely on the registration fees of students to maintain the smooth running of the courses. Provides a mechanism, the Secure e-Course eXchange (eCX), to protect the learning material from unauthorized dissemination, and shows how this mechanism can be integrated in the operation model of online learning course providers. The design of eCX is general enough to fit two operating models, namely the Institutional Server Model and the Corporate Server Model.

Notes: Proposes the use of a special purpose drop-in firewall/VPN gateway called Sieve, that can be inserted between the mobile workstation and the network to provide individualized security services for that particular station. Sieve is meant to be used like an external modem: the user only needs to plug it in. Its existence is transparent to the user, requiring no modification to the workstation configuration. To function in this role, Sieve has been designed to be compact, low-cost, requiring little administration or maintenance. Discusses the features and advantages of the system and demonstrates how Sieve was used in various application areas (home, university environment, etc.).

Notes: Multicasting is a necessity for a broadband metro-area-network. Discusses the security problems with current multicast protocols. To make the multicast delivery infrastructure more secure and reliable, a stateful multicast access control mechanism, based on MAPE, is proposed. This mechanism expands the current forwarding procedure of a layer 2 switch so that stateful multicast access control can be carried out at the very edge of the metro area network. The architecture of MAPE is discussed in detail, as well as the states maintained and messages exchanged. Further explains that the scheme is flexible and scalable.

Notes: Dimensions of critical factors that impact online retailing (e-quality) are synthesized from the literature and organized along the four phases of a consumer's online shopping experience: encountering the online retailer's home page, selecting a product from the online catalog, completing the order form and accessing customer service and support. Using a random sample of 55 online retailers, the study benchmarks real online transactions against these e-quality dimensions. Findings suggest several areas that e-retailers should target for improvement. These areas include increasing the speed of home page loading, providing the ability to translate into multiple languages, enhancing the capabilities of search engines, displaying security policies more conspicuously, offering multiple payment options, and reducing the minimum number of clicks to complete a transaction. The final phase of the online shopping experience, customer service and support, seems to offer the most room for improvement in the areas of instant automated merchant notification of orders and on time delivery.

Notes: A survey of 208 US Midwestern Internet users reveals, first, that the nature of Internet dhopping (IS) is a function of consumers' domain specific IS Innovativeness, not only in regard to product purchasing (as has been previously observed) but also to visiting sites for product information. Second, IS innovativeness is positively associated with the variety of product classes shopped online, and this association is stronger with popular than with unpopular product classes. Third, the impact of IS innovativeness is in addition to, and not simply a reflection of, the positive contribution to online shopping made by the prevalence of online shopping in one's social setting. Fourth, when IS innovativeness is uncontrolled, apparent support is found for previous contentions that online shopping is greater among those with more extensive Internet experience. However, when IS innovativeness is considered, the predictive ability of Internet experience decreases, in some cases to nonsignificance.

Notes: Internet marketing is a field which is continuing to grow, and the online auction concept may be defining a totally new and unique distribution alternative. Very few studies have examined auction sellers and their Internet marketing strategies. This research examines the Internet auction phenomenon as it relates to the marketing mix of online auction sellers. The data in this study indicate that, while there is great diversity among businesses that utilize online auctions, distinct cost leadership and differentiation marketing strategies are both evident. These two approaches are further distinguished in terms of the Internet usage strategies employed by each group.

Notes: In a closed conference the identity of all conference participants is known by others and all participants are notified when a new user joins the conference. The Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) supports signalling of several conference models, but not of closed conferences. Introduces an extension of SIP for closed multiparty conferences. The extension expands SIP for the functionality for discovery of participant identities in a conference. Furthermore, it ensures that each conference participant is notified before a new participant joins. Verifies this extension by applying it to two SIP conference models - conference with conference server and full-mesh conference. Ends with an analysis of additional signalling traffic that this extension generates.

Notes: There has been a strong focus in the literature upon the factors that affect the adoption of e-commerce, and the demographics of Internet users, but few attempts to link these two bodies of knowledge. This empirical study investigates the extent to which the adoption of e-commerce amongst retailers is influenced by the socio-demographic characteristics of their target customers. The questionnaire was mailed to senior marketing executives in the UK's largest retail organisations, and ultimately resulted in the receipt of 164 useable replies, giving an overall response rate of 18 per cent. The results of a set of analyses demonstrate that organisations are most likely to adopt the Internet for information provision, marketing and direct sales purposes if their typical customer is male, young and a member of the professional/managerial classes. This is not surprising, as young, professional males are typically enthusiastic and competent users of information technologies.

Notes: Although waiting on the Internet is widely recognised as a crucial factor in the evolution of e-commerce and the Internet in general, it is not a widespread topic of research. This article identifies and reviews 21 papers based on 13 separate empirical studies on waiting on the Internet. The literature draws from the areas of marketing, system response time studies and quality of service studies. Having reviewed the existing literature, this article proposes an agenda for future research. Recommendations are made to extend the range of research methodologies applied to this topic, to broaden the definition of waiting on the Internet to include other forms of online waiting, and to continue the interdisciplinary approach to research on online waiting.

Notes: A model for monitoring the Web site development process in the public sector is proposed and tested empirically with a sample of 76 local government Web sites. The framework consists of basic dimensions and a 2 × 2 matrix that is a simplified revision of the Mohammed et al.'s marketspace matrix. The four factors in the matrix, publicity, local service, differentiation and participation, together with two basic dimensions of attracting and delivering were proved to be important elements in a workable research framework. The effects of dimensions/factors and the role of online attracting are discussed in depth.

Notes: With the worldwide growth of open telecommunication networks and in particular the Internet, the privacy and security concerns of people using these networks have increased. On the one hand, users are concerned about their privacy, and desire to anonymously access the network. On the other hand, some organizations are concerned about how this anonymous access might be abused. This paper intends to bridge these conflicting interests, and proposes a solution for revocable anonymous access to the Internet. Moreover, the paper presents some legal background and motivation for such a solution. However, the paper also indicates some difficulties and disadvantages of the proposed solution, and suggests the need for further debate on the issue of online anonymity.

Notes: Wireless Internet via mobile devices (WIMD) is leading the world into another spectrum of communications and means of conducting day-to-day business and life activities. Full bloom of wireless Internet services depends on user acceptance, as well as technology improvement. This paper develops a technology acceptance model for wireless Internet via mobile devices (TAM for wireless Internet), a conceptual framework to explain the factors influencing user acceptance of WIMD. By revising the technology acceptance model (TAM) to represent some unique features of the wireless system under study, TAM for wireless Internet proposes that constructs such as individual differences, technology complexity, facilitating conditions, social influences, and wireless trust environment determine user-perceived short and long-term usefulness, and ease of using WIMD. These, in turn, determine user intention and willingness to adopt WIMD. Twelve propositions are developed to promote and facilitate future empirical research relating to WIMD.

Notes: The paper develops a behavioral model of Web information seeking that identifies four complementary modes of information seeking: undirected viewing, conditioned viewing, informal search, and formal search. In each mode of viewing or searching, users would adopt distinctive patterns of browser moves: starting, chaining, browsing, differentiating, monitoring, and extracting. The model is applied empirically to analyze the Web information seeking behavior of 24 women in IT professions over a two-week period. Our results show that participants engaged in all four modes of information seeking on the Web, and that each mode may be characterized by certain browser actions. Overall, the study suggests that a behavioral approach that links information seeking modes (goals and reasons for browsing and searching) to moves (actions used to find and view information) may be helpful in understanding Web-based information seeking.

Notes: Heightened competition in the e-commerce domain continues to force the need for a reliable and user-friendly service quality measurement methodology. The challenge facing practitioners, however, is to identify and implement the most appropriate measurement tools for their operation. Disconfirmation measures have come to dominate the debate concerning this very issue, with both direct and inferred techniques presenting themselves as reliable and valid measures of online quality. This paper addresses this very debate in the context of an online library service setting. It presents findings that attest to the psychometric and diagnostic performance of both techniques and suggests that while much time is taken up discussing the former, the real power of such techniques for online operators rests with the latter, i.e. their ability to pinpoint service failures and direct continuous quality improvement efforts.

Notes: The corporate Web site is an indispensable part of any e-commerce venture. If users find it difficult to do electronic transactions, they will visit another online source, or go to a physical source instead. Evaluating the performance of e-commerce Web sites has received some attention in the past few years, but there is still a pressing need for a more comprehensive approach. This paper attempts to address this need by providing an e-commerce Web site evaluation framework and method built on solid business principles, and using multidimensional scaling to analyse evaluation data and present the results in a graphic manner for easy interpretation.

Notes: This paper examines how young consumers perceive the Web as an advertising medium in relation to eight traditional media on 15 constructs elicited from subjects. Results indicate that the Web is perceived to be very far from most of the other media, except point of purchase and direct mail. Conducting correspondence analysis and cluster analysis revealed the reasons for why the Web advertising is located close to point of purchase and direct mail. A noticeable finding was that farthest away from the Web is outdoor. Implications based on the findings are discussed.

Notes: Designing a truly customer focused Web site can be difficult. This paper examines the approach of adapting the existing database design technique of normalisation for achieving customer focused Web site design. A Web site can be thought of as a multimedia database, in fact under European law a Web site is legally classified as being a database. In traditional database design, normalisation is used to structure data and provide efficient keys for data retrieval. In Web site normalisation "data" is now the text, images, and functions (for example, e-mail and ordering goods) that are required on the Web site. Keys for "data" are now Web site headings, sub-groupings, and topics. Web site normalisation allows the Web site designer to structure Web site material and identify the optimal Web site navigational structure from a customer perspective, and thus, produce a truly customer focused Web site. A case study in a UK marketing organisation is provided in order to demonstrate and evaluate Web site normalisation in action.

Notes: As the use of Web-based learning technologies to supplement college classroom instruction has increased, a key issue for faculty members is how to entice their students to accept these technologies. Research suggests that student experience with the technologies may influence their acceptance. The technology acceptance model was used as a framework to study the effect of student experience with Web-based learning technologies on their acceptance of those technologies. Analysis showed that experience with the technology positively influenced perceived ease of use. Perceptions of ease of use and usefulness positively influenced attitudes towards the technology. Attitude positively influenced intention to use, and intention positively influenced usage. Results suggest that as student experience with a technology increases, they perceive it to be easier to use and more useful, and therefore, are more likely to use it. When introducing the technology, instructors should emphasize how easy the technology is to use and how useful it is in improving grades.

Notes: Previous research suggests males and females exhibit different beliefs about and attitudes toward traditional media advertising along with different advertising stimulated consumer behaviors. However, little is known about gender differences in consumer beliefs about Web advertising versus other media, attitude toward Web advertising, or Web advertising associated consumer behavior. Survey results indicate males and females differ significantly on several dimensions with males exhibiting more positive beliefs about Web advertising and more positive attitudes toward Web advertising than females. Additionally, males are more likely than females to purchase from the Web and surf the Web for functional and entertainment reasons, whereas females are more likely to surf the Web for shopping reasons.

Notes: Participants in Internet net news bulletin board discussions can argue with others whom they do not know. The nature of each message in a discussion can be characterized by the frequency with which keywords appear in the message. This incidence or frequency can be summarized as a principal component score. By deriving two characteristic indexes - auto-correlation coefficients and power spectra - from the principal component scores, we have come up with a novel method. Applying this method to analyze three large net news threads, the index plots revealed two-generation cyclic fluctuations. Comparing these plots with actual points of conflict obtained by reading the message contents, a fairly good correlation was obtained between the two and it was found that most of the conflicts were among participants with different cultural backgrounds.

Notes: The corrosion inhibition efficiencies of five different nitrogenous heterocyclic bases 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole (ATA), 2-amino-1,3,4-thiadiazole (ATDA), (p-toly) 1,3,4-triazole (TTA), 3-amino-5-methylmercapto-1,2,4-triazole (AMTA) and 2-aminobenziotriazole (ABA) on carbon steel were investigated in relation to their molecular structure. Corrosion current densities, in the absence and presence of the compounds, were used to assess inhibition performances. The corrosion efficiencies were considered on the basis of their molecular planarity, aromaticity and p-electron donation assumption.

Notes: Advanced crack-resistant coatings based on water dispersion of chlorine-sulpho-polyethylene (CSPE, Hypalon®) vulcanized by Mannich alkalis (MA) water solution were obtained. Application of MA as a CSPE structure component makes it possible to produce a vulcanized net of saturated polymer, and thus to receive ecologically safe impenetrable crack resistant coatings of any substrata (concrete, metal, plastic, etc.). The coatings can be applied in aircraft, automotive, shipbuilding, paint and varnish industries, civil engineering, etc. as a corrosion-resistant material. The optimal coating composition and its mechanical properties have been studied.

Notes: Surfactants are important corrosion inhibitors that are used in different applications. This paper utilizes the recently developed methodology and formulae to predict mild steel corrosion inhibition by alkyl pyridinium chloride and alkyl trimethyl ammonium bromide compounds. By utilizing different surfactants of varying chain lengths in different acidic media and determining the associated corrosion inhibition, the relationship between surfactant concentration, surfactant hydrocarbon chain length, surfactant critical micelle concentration, and corrosion inhibition can be evaluated. The results from this study can be used to improve relevant industrial uses of surfactants for corrosion inhibition.

Notes: Several cyclic hydroxylamines containing hydrophobic substituents were prepared. All these hydroxylamines were tested for corrosion inhibition of carbon steel in 1M HCl at 60°C by gravimetric and electrochemical methods. All compounds showed excellent corrosion inhibition efficiency (IE per cent) in acidic solutions containing 400?ppm of the inhibitors; Inhibitor Efficiencies in the range 66-98 per cent were measured by the gravimetric method. Comparable results were obtained by the electrochemical method using Tafel plots for the IE of some of the selected synthesised compounds.

Notes: A new zinc phosphating bath, which produces coatings at relatively lower temperatures within a reasonable time by using of chemical accelerators has been devised. Improvement of the bath performance by the addition of divalent cations like calcium, manganese and magnesium has been studied. Bath formulation and operating conditions have been optimized by coating weight determinations. Corrosion resistance property of the resultant coatings has been evaluated in 1,000?ppm Cl- by electrochemical methods such as potentiodynamic polarization and impedance measurements. Results of the electrochemical techniques have been complemented by salt spray, humidity and immersion tests. Porosity and roughness of the coatings have also been studied. Results show that the phosphating bath with manganese addition gives good coatings within 30?min. Studies have shown that the corrosion resistance of the resultant coatings are much superior than the conventional coatings.

Notes: In a new build waste incinerator, the waste (refuse derived fuel) was burned on a discontinuous moving grate. Frequent furnace overpressure peaks occurred because of this firing method and as a result, flue gas and fly-ash were pushed out of the boiler and into the building. During the plant start up period, a seal in a water-feed pipeline broke, and a large amount of condensed steam was discharged into the boiler house. Shortly thereafter, very severe corrosion was noticed on the galvanised gangways, steel building components, the boiler aluminium sheeting and on processing lines. A theoretical study of the condensation of the flue gas indicated that sulphuric acid would condense before it reached the external aluminium sheeting and that under normal conditions, dry hydrochloric acid fumes would be removed by the boiler house ventilators. However, the steam leakage had caused the hydrochloric acid to be dissolved in the condensed water and that had resulted in the severe corrosion damage, which had become evident subsequently.

Notes: The inhibition of sweet gas corrosion of carbon steel in high pressure CO2 saturated brine by rosin amine has been studied by weight-loss, electrochemical polarisation and electrochemical impedance spectrum measurements. The results obtained revealed that rosin amine compound is a good inhibitor. The inhibition efficiency increased with the increase of inhibitor concentration. Rosin amine acts mainly as a adsorptive mixed-type inhibitor. The adsorption of the inhibitor on the metal surface in high pressure CO2 saturated brine obey Langmuir isotherm. The adsorption mechanism of inhibitor was both electrostatic-adsorption and chemisorption.

Notes: A variety of bisquaternary ammonium salts was prepared for the first time by reacting N,N,N',N'-tetraallyl-1,6-hexanediamine with allyl chloride, propargyl chloride, benzyl chloride, and 1-bromododecane in excellent yields (〉90 per cent). Inhibition efficiency for different concentrations of the synthesised compounds for the inhibition of corrosion of carbon steel in 1?M HCl exposed for 6?h at 60°C was determined gravimetrically. The bisquaternary salts exhibited excellent inhibition efficiencies (97-99 per cent) in the acidic solution containing 400?ppm of the inhibitor. Comparable results were obtained by the electrochemical method using Tafel plots for the inhibition efficiency of the synthesised compounds. The adsorption of these compounds on carbon steel surface was found to obey Temkin's adsorption isotherm. The work marked the beginning of constituting an important class of new inhibitors containing multiple adsorption centres of positive nitrogens as well as p-donor moieties.

Notes: Sources have been described of corrosively hazardous electric fields and methods of determination of the corrosion hazard to metal structures caused by electrolytic corrosion. Results of potential and impedance investigations in the field of stray currents flowing out of a tram traction and in the presence of a defined electric field of low frequency have been presented. Uncertainties have been indicated relating to the generally accepted interpretation principles of measurement results in the presence of electric fields. The possibility has been indicated of incorporating the impedance spectroscopy technique to potential-voltage investigations, allowing estimation of the real corrosion interaction of stray currents on underground structures.

Notes: A corrosion study of the intra-uterine device, "TCu 380?A", was made using cyclic voltammetry (CV), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical microscopy (OM). Blood plasma, whole blood and artificial uterine fluid were used as corrosive media in order to establish a comparative scheme of the corrosion behaviour of copper in the device. In summary, the results obtained were not only similar to work reported previously, but also provided complementary data for a better understanding of the corrosion problem.

Notes: A new method of spectral analysis has been proposed for non-stationary harmonic analysis of corrosion processes. The current of a model circuit has been considered which would simulate a first-order electrode reaction proceeding in conditions of a linearly changing electrode potential with a superimposed sinusoid signal. It has been shown that the Fourier transformation approach does not reflect the amplitude changes of harmonic components as a function of constant potential. In addition, it has been shown mathematically that application of Gabor transformation in spectral analysis is a means of obtaining the correct frequency components. The Gabor transform correctly reflects amplitude changes of harmonic components as a function of potential. Digital analysis of current changes by Gabor transformation unequivocally confirmed the usability of this method for harmonic analysis of corrosion processes.

Notes: The beneficial effect of halide ions on the inhibition of corrosion of carbon steel in 20 per cent HCl solution in the presence of some nitrogen-containing compounds, cetyl pyridinium chloride, cetyl pyridinium bromide, and hexamine was investigated using potentiodynamic polarisation measurements. Potentiodynamic polarisation studies revealed that all the tested compounds were of anodic-type inhibitors. All of the compounds were able to reduce the corrosion of carbon steel and their performance was enhanced by the addition of iodide ions. The increase in surface coverage in the presence of the iodide ions indicated that iodide ions enhanced the absorption of inhibitor compounds on the metal surface. Auger electron spectroscopic analysis confirmed the joint absorption of the compounds with KI.

Notes: This paper describes a study on the corrosion behaviour of archaeological bronze in simulated groundwater by means of a simulated occluded cell. The study revealed migration, enrichment and deposition patterns of ions in the environment and the cations produced by anodic dissolution during localised corrosion of bronze. The cycle voltametry technique was utilised for the first time on the study of electrochemical behaviour of the bronze/simulated occluded solution interface. The potential and current peaks of oxidation-reduction at the cathode and anode in the occluded solutions at various time intervals facilitated a study of the corrosion products formation processes and their formation speeds.

Notes: The development of new protective organic coatings is affected by a number of factors, the most important ones at present being those related to environmental acceptability of anticorrosive pigments. An effective solution has been shown to be the application of anticorrosive inorganic pigments based on mixed metal oxides. These pigments consist of spinel and rutile lattice structures. In order to examine the anticorrosive properties, the individual pigments prepared were added to alkyd and styrene-acrylate based test coatings. Both the anticorrosion efficiencies, and the mechanisms of action of the pigments were also evaluated.

Notes: The inhibiting effects of 2,6-ionen and 2,10-ionen type polyvinylbenzyltrimethylammonium chloride, and latex, on low carbon steel in hydrochloric acid solution was investigated by potentiodynamic polarisation measurements and impedance measurement techniques over the temperature range of 20-60°C at different inhibitor concentrations. It was found that the inhibition efficiencies increased with increasing inhibitor concentration. The degree of shift in Ecorr values, together with the change in anodic and cathodic Tafel slopes (ßa, ßc), revealed that the studied inhibitors behaved as anodic inhibitors. Thermodynamic and kinetic parameters for dissolution and adsorption were also calculated.

Notes: The squeeze-film characteristics between two parallel rectangular plates with an electrically conducting fluid in the presence of a transverse magnetic field are analyzed. The squeeze-film Reynolds equation applicable to the curved surfaces is derived using the continuity equation and the magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) motion equations. A closed-form solution is obtained for the squeeze-film pressure of parallel rectangular plates, and applied to predict the squeeze-film behavior. According to the results, the presence of magnetic fields signifies an enhancement in the squeeze-film pressure. On the whole, the magnetic-field effect characterized by the Hartmann number provides an increase in value of the load-carrying capacity and the response time as compared to the classical non-conducting lubricant case, especially for larger values of the aspect ratio or smaller values of film height.

Notes: Among lubrication processes for cold forging of steel, phosphating is the most common. Depending on contact between piece and phosphating solution, the success of this treatment depends on steel surface preparation. Despite this obvious fact, the influence of cleaning pretreatments such as degreasing and acid pickling are seldom considered from a mechanical point of view and specially from a tribological one. Through a tribological test, the preparation of the surface of steel billets to be zinc phosphated and soaped was studied. Having shown the importance of degreasing, this study tries to connect the parameters of warm acid pickling, such as bath composition and dipping time to the tribological performances of the coated part.

Notes: The metalworking (MW) fluid industry accounts for approximately 5 per cent of the total world market for lubricants. MW fluids rely upon good formulation expertise and effective chemical additives. It is becoming increasingly apparent that in order to provide chemical additives that meet the increasing demands of the MW fluids market, additive suppliers have to provide increasing amounts of information regarding the performance and environmental impact of their additives.

Notes: Efforts have been directed to study the magnetic fluid based squeeze film behaviour between rotating porous circular plates with a concentric pocket. The porous housing is considered to be elastically negligibly deformable with its contact surface rough. The stochastic film thickness characterizing the roughness is assumed to be asymmetric with non-zero mean and variance. Expressions for pressure distribution, load carrying capacity and response time are obtained in closed form. These expressions are numerically computed and the results are presented graphically as well as in tabular form.

Notes: Metalworking fluids are applied in metal working operations in order to decrease tribological effects and increase economy. Primarily they are used for cooling the tools and the workpieces and also for lubricating the cutting edges. The components of metalworking fluids responsible for decrease in friction are AW/EP additives. To comply with the very strong European legislation for human and environmental protection, important compounds for metalworking fluids formulation are reduced. Based on this, chlorinated paraffin, a widely used AW/EP additive, should be replaced with less harmful compounds. The application possibility of new types of AW/EP additives as chlorinated paraffin replacements is investigated in this paper. These additives are synthetic esters of carboxylic fatty acids, phosphoric and dithiophosphoric acid derivatives. Watermiscible metalworking fluids formulations are prepared with the new types of additives and examined at laboratory test machines–EP-Four ball, Wear-Four ball machine and Reichert balance machine.

Notes: In this paper, experiments were carried out to study the friction and wear performance for the materials of the piston and cylinder in a water hydraulic axial piston pump. The matching of a 940 stainless steel circle with a F102 engineering plastics block and a 940 stainless steel circle with an Al2O3 ceramic block were also studied. The wearing capacities were calculated by theoretical formulae based on the grinding crack widths. When pure water is used as hydraulic transmission medium, it is better to use ceramic with engineering plastics as matching materials for the piston and cylinder of water hydraulic axial piston pump. The experimental results have provided a theoretical basis for selecting the matching materials of the piston and cylinder.

Notes: The tribological problems of polymers have received more attention because of their suitability for fabricating machine elements in food industry, which require self lubrication environment. In this investigation, we studied and explored the influence of test speed and load values on the friction and wear behaviour of PTFE, POM and PEI polymers. Friction and wear tests of PTFE, POM and PEI vs steel were carried out at dry condition on a pin-on-disc arrangement. Tribological tests were carried out at room temperature, under 5, 10 and 15?N loads and at 0.5, 0.75 and 1?m/s speeds. The specific wear rates were deduced from mass loss. The results showed that, for all the polymers used in this investigation, the coefficient of friction increases linearly with the increase in load. Moreover, for the load and speed range of this investigation, the wear rate showed very little sensitivity to the applied load and large sensitivity to test speed, particularly at high load values.

Notes: In the present paper, the squeeze film lubrication between anisotropic porous rectangular plates with lubricants containing polar additives has been studied. The lubricants containing additives has been modelled as a Stokes couple stress fluid. The more realistic Beavers-Joseph slip boundary conditions are used to derive the most general form of Reynolds equation, which account for the effects due to the lubricant additives and the anisotropic nature of porous material. The eigen type of expressions are obtained for the fluid film pressure, load carrying capacity and squeeze film time. It is observed that the effect of the lubricant additives is to increase the load carrying capacity and the squeeze film time as compared to the Newtonian lubricants. Further for anisotropic porous surface, the maximum load carrying capacity is attained for the rectangular (non-square) plates.

Notes: Most of the machine parts can be produced using several manufacturing methods, such as forging, machining, casting or welding. The type of manufacturing method may be selected with respect to production costs of the alternatives for individual parts. In the presented study, an experimental friction welding set-up was designed and constructed in order to investigate the effects of some welding parameters on the welding quality. The set-up was constructed as continuous-drive. Several groups of specimen were machined from the same material. Some pilot welding experiments under different process parameters were carried out in order to obtain optimum parameters according to statistical approach. The strengths of the joints were determined by tension tests, and the results were compared with those of specimen's material. Addition to the tensile test data, hardness variations and microstructures in the welding- zone were obtained and examined.

Notes: High-speed gas-lubricated porous journal bearings up to 200,000?rpm are analyzed numerically. The effects of rotation speed, bearing eccentricity, permeability and thickness of the porous wall on bearing load capacity and attitude angle are investigated. The adequate initial conditions are necessary to improve the convergence of the numerical solutions for high rotation speeds. The results show that the hydrodynamic effect of high rotation speed is not as significant in gas-lubricated film as the effect of bearing eccentricity to increase the load capacity. The results also show that the lower permeability and the thicker wall of the porous bearing produce the higher load capacity.

Notes: The test procedure for characterizing the tribological behavior of lubricants and materials for the system "piston ring/cylinder liner" outside of engines is now operational and validated. The test parameters presented in this paper (FN=50?N; v=0.3?m/s, s=24?km) may act only as an indicator and should be used to the tasks regarded. It allows the check prior expensive engine testing, if a tribomaterial, tribocouple or new lubricant will reach a satisfactory engine performance. The introduction of piston ring segments and cylinder liner as specimen into the test rig as well as the volumetric wear determined by means of stylus profilometry represented a big step forward in order to increase the transferability of "tribotests" to engine tests on an acceptable level.

Notes: According to the Stokes microcontinuum theorem and Christensen's stochastic model, the main objective of this paper is to theoretically predict the combined influences of couple stresses and surface roughness on the lubrication performance of journal-bearing systems. To take account of the presence of both the surface roughness of bearings and the couple stress effect due to the lubricant containing the polar suspensions, the generalized stochastic non-Newtonian Reynolds-type equation is derived. Compared to the Newtonian-lubricant smooth-bearing case, the couple stress effects and the longitudinal roughness improve the load carrying capacity, and thus decrease the attitude angle and friction parameter, while the effect of transverse roughness is opposite to that of the longitudinal one in the journal-bearing system.

Notes: A study of step bearing lubricated with a ferrofluid was made in this paper. Shah and Bhat considered the term µ0M(?H/?x) of ferrofluid as lubricant. The present paper discusses the problem with the modified term as µ0M?(?H/?x)+(16pµ0r3?M)/(9(l+2)3)(?H/?x) of ferrofluid which incorporates more properties of ferrofluids. Expressions for pressure under the two steps and load carrying capacity were obtained. It was observed that the use of ferrofluid increases the load capacity of the bearing. Also load capacity become more when the length of the first step was taken less.

Notes: Environmentally adapted lubricants (EALs) have been a slowly growing segment of the lubricants business since the early 1970s. The evolution of environmental thinking has led to the change of focus, from biodegradability to renewability. In the future, the focus will be more on fuel economy and lower emissions. Technical development drivers include the availability of suitable base fluids and additives for lubricants formulation and the adaptation of technical standards, OEM specifications and eco-labels. Important non-technical development drivers include environmental management tools and eco auditing. Environmental policy, and procurement guidelines for cities and government organizations, clearly has a large impact. EALs have been repeatedly heralded as one of the few future growth segments of the lubricants business, hence the relatively large increase in R&D activity over the last decade. In sales terms, growth has been slow, limited by high cost and several other factors. For a good future development, both technical and political hurdles must be overcome.

Notes: Damage of aluminium alloy under contact loading is detected in different cases independent of contact configuration and operating conditions. An investigation of two industrial cases is proposed to describe how it is possible to study the material degradation under friction. The experimental simulation of aluminium damage in laboratory conditions is carried out. Two contact configurations are studied in order to reproduce the industrial damage of aluminium alloys. Varying experimental conditions relative to a specific contact body for each test have demonstrated a realistic correlation between damage, test configuration and material properties. Independent of the tribological system, plastic deformation seems to be the major parameter controlling the wear of aluminium alloy under friction in the studied cases.

Notes: Exotic marine organisms, Garveia Franciscana, called "Pelo de Oso" by the locals, were detected in Lake Maracaibo. "Pelo de Oso" constitutes one of the three components of the metal/biota/solution system that interact in Lake Maracaibo, producing biofouling and microbiological corrosion. The latter generates great economic problems, mainly: water-pump failures. The objective of this paper was to determine the preference of these bioorganisms for materials, when immersed in Lake Maracaibo.

Notes: The paper deals with studying the anticorrosive properties of condensed phosphates and polyphosphates in the coatings. The pigments contain cation in the most cases as aluminium in a combination with zinc, strontium, calcium or a combination with all the cations. The investigated anticorrosive pigments differ in water solubility, inhibition efficiencies of their aqueous extracts and also the efficiencies in the coatings protecting steel substrate to corrosion. Two types of condensed anticorrosive pigments (polyphosphates and polyphosphosilicates) were compared. The anticorrosion properties of polyphosphosilicates are inferior to those of polyphosphates. The high anticorrosion efficiency was found at a comparative pigment, represented by zinc phosphosilicate.

Notes: An electrochemical polarisation technique was employed to measure the porosity of electroless nickel (EN) coating. The technique is based on the change observed in the electrochemical parameters with varying cathode and/or anode area on a bimetallic corroding surface. The nickel coating test samples were obtained from a hypophosphite plating bath in the presence of different complexing agents. This technique was used to estimate the effect of coating thickness on porosity and the influence of addition of different complexing agents to EN baths on porosity. The results suggest that, unlike other conventional methods, the electrochemical, a non-destructive method, can detect the smallest pore in an EN-coating and quantify its size in terms of pore area fraction.

Notes: The presence of soluble salts, especially chlorides and sulphates, at the metal/paint interface usually causes premature deterioration of the paint system. In practice, soluble salts are found heterogeneously distributed in the steel corrosion products layer and are frequently located at the base steel/rust layer interface. However, in most of the research studies carried out with the aim of establishing critical concentration levels for different paint systems, panels have been prepared by dosing the saline contaminant in an uniform way across flat and unrusted steel surfaces. In order to resolve this problem, an attempt has been made to reproduce the atmospheric corrosion process of steel in environments contaminated with SO2 and Cl-, using a salt fog cabinet for the case of chlorides, and a Kesternich type cabinet for sulphates.

Notes: The inhibitive action of triazoles and surfactants on the corrosion of carbon steel has been studied using the weight loss method and electrochemical studies. Results obtained show that these organic compounds are very good inhibitors. Potentiodynamic polarisation studies clearly reveal the type of inhibitor. The corrosion parameters such as corrosion current (icorr), corrosion potential (Ecorr), inhibition efficiency (IE), corrosion rate, and activation energy (Ea) were calculated at different temperatures ranging from 303 to 333?K. The adsorption of triazole compounds on carbon steel surface obeyed Langmuir's adsorption isotherm.

Notes: A number of applications selected with variations of factors affecting the corrosion of mortar steel reinforcements are discussed in this paper. Corrosion estimation by means of a strain gauge (SG) technique was used in several cases to confirm the validity of the method. The efficiency of corrosion inhibitors, the protection offered by the addition of minerals, the curing time influence, and the corrosion resistance of various steel types can be estimated by means of the short term SG test technique. Good correlations were found in all cases of application between the corrosion rates computed from SG technique and the mass loss data. Additionally, the method was applied for swelling measurements of mortar specimens caused by the degradation of FRP reinforcements in the corrosive environments.

Notes: Corrosion of carbon steel and copper is a troublesome problem in low hardness cooling water systems. A new kind of water stabiliser containing hydroxy phosphonocarboxylic acid, zinc salts and molybdate has been developed. Its performance has been proved by means of weight loss tests and a static state scale-inhibiting test method. The mechanism was also studied using polarisation tests, scanning electron microscope examination and XPS analysis. The test results showed that the corrosion rate of carbon steel and copper could be reduced to 0.0136 and 0.0010?mm/a, respectively. A compact film containing P, Mo and Zn was formed on the surface of carbon steel, by means of which the steel was protected.

Notes: The inhibition of corrosion of aluminium in chloroacetic acids, namely monochloroacetic acid (MCA), dichloroacetic acid (DCA) and trichloroacetic acid (TCA) solutions, using 2-acetylphenothiazine (2APTZ) at 30 and 40°C, at concentrations of 1×10-3M, 1×10-4M, 7.5×10-5M, 5×10-5M and 1×10-5M, was studied using the weight loss and hydrogen evolution techniques. At the highest concentration studied, using the hydrogen evolution technique, an inhibition efficiency of 86.16 per cent was obtained. The investigation revealed that 2APTZ inhibited the corrosion reaction. A physical adsorption mechanism is proposed on the basis of the obtained average Ea values of 76.05?kJ/mol for MCA, 70.75?kJ/mol for DCA and 68.52?kJ/mol for TCA. 2APTZ was confirmed to obey the Freundlish adsorption isotherm equation at the concentration studied. The two techniques employed revealed a first-order kinetics.

Notes: The dissolution behaviour of steel in 1?N solutions of HCl, H2SO4 and HClO4 acid containing 10 per cent (v/v) ethanol was investigated at 30-60°C using gas volume measurements, polarisation and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques. The data revealed that the rate of corrosion decreased in the order Cl-〉SO42-〉ClO4-. The corrosion mechanism of the acid dissolution for steel at low pH was found to be dependent on the counter ion present. The mechanism was discussed on the basis that the acid anion is first adsorbed on the steel surface, followed by the formation of a surface complex in the anodic process and finally the complex was desorbed from the surface. In general, if the adsorbed anion or the surface complex was stable, the corrosion of steel was suppressed. The calculated values of the activation energy for the steel in different acid indicated that the dissolution process proceeded via similar mechanisms.

Notes: A large number of diesel engine failures have been reported in the immediate past. The large proportion of these engines that were investigated, were recently overhauled engines that failed soon after the overhaul process. In some cases, these engines failed on the dynamometer, while it was tested before delivery to the customer. The most common failure on a large number of these engines, were pistons seizing in the crown region causing seizure of the piston in the cylinder. Tests were done to correlate the lubricity of the fuel that was used and the failure of the engines. Limits were obtained from which it could be determined when the fuel was not of a proper quality and where engine failures took place. It is finally recommended that the specification SABS 342 be amended to include the requirements for the lubricity of diesel fuels.

Notes: Coating is a technique employed for the surface of materials to have thermal insulation, hot corrosion and oxidation resistance. Ion implantation forms modifications in surface composition or morphology of solids which yield to a change of physical and especially mechanical properties such as hardness and modulus of elasticity. The objective of this investigation is to concentrate on the friction and wear behaviour of TiN, N2 and Zr implanted and TiN and Tinalox PVD coated 316L stainless steel and compare with a substrate. Mainly stainless steels were of attraction, because they frequently demonstrate a poor tribological behaviour, which can be enhanced when they are hardened by incorporating N2, TiN Tinalox and Zr and forming a hardened surface zone.

Notes: Ferrofluid lubrication of a porous secant shaped slider bearing was analysed considering slip velocity at the interface of film and porous regions. Expressions for various bearing characteristics were obtained. Computed values of dimensionless load capacity of the bearing, friction force on the moving slider, coefficient of friction and the position of the centre of pressure were displayed in a tabular form. The load capacity, friction and coefficient of friction decreased when the slip parameter increased. But, the load capacity as well as friction decreased and the coefficient of friction increased when the permeability parameter increased. The position of the centre of pressure was not significantly altered when the slip parameter increased. But, it slowly moved towards the inlet when the permeability parameter increased.

Notes: Metal forming through punching finds wide interest in industry. The punch life and the end product quality depend on the punch and workpiece properties as well as punching conditions. Recently, TiN coating of the punch surface has reported to improve considerably the tool life and the end product quality. This is because of the high hardness and low friction coefficient of TiN coating. In the present study, the wear properties of sheared edges punch is investigated through SEM micrograph and EDS analysis. Mild steel is selected as workpiece material while the punch material is cold-work tool steel (A2). The punch surface is coated with TiN (PVD) and an uniform coat thickness is assured. It is found that the wear mechanism is governed by adhesive and abrasive wear through shearing. The TiN coating protects the punch surface in the initial cycles of the punching process. As the punching cycle progresses, local defects in TiN coating are observed, i.e. coating is locally worn away.

Notes: Additives are incorporated in engine oils to improve existing desirable properties of base stocks and to impart new specific properties required by modern engines. The additives include antioxidants, detergents, dispersants, corrosion and rust inhibitors, viscosity index improvers, pour point depressants, foam inhibitors and tribological agents. In this study, the effect of boron oil fortifier added into the base oil on friction coefficient and pressure distribution was investigated between sliding surfaces of engine journal bearings. Experiments were performed firstly using only base oil at different speeds and loads. Then, this test was repeated with different concentration ratio of 1, 3, 5 and 10 percent commercial boron additive.

Notes: Recently, much effort has been focused on research and development of new types of lubricating oil additives to reduce wear and friction in the tribological systems. It has been noted that the use of additives to improve the lubricating capacity and durability of oil plays an important role in the wear and friction process of materials. Due to the environmental problems, many researchers are embarking on the viability of the vegetable-based lubricants. In this article a critical review has been made on vegetable-based lubricant additives with specific properties and application. This article explains the advantages and manufacturing processes of vegetable-based oils, which will give a better understanding of using biodegradable lubricating oil additives. A case study on palm oil methyl ester as an additive has been presented in this paper.

Notes: The real profile length constitutes a hybrid parameter in surface metrology which is rather neglected in literature, albeit it affects or controls sometimes surface functional properties like corrosion resistance, adhesibility, wear, lubrication etc. Real profile length values are assessed here in turning of different carbon steels under a wide range of cutting conditions variation leading to a variety of relevant textures. Useful quantitative information for evaluation and modeling of the turning process is provided, as well as correlation is sought with other topography parameters and the statistical distributions over the turned surfaces are determined. Also, possibilities of turned profiles discrimination are discussed.

Notes: The wear behavior of a novel composite aluminum-graphite composite prepared by simple powder metallurgy techniques is reported. Graphite powders were surface-treated with copper to activate the powder surface and to improve the wettability of the graphite surface. The mixed Al-C (7 percent, 5 percent, 3 percent, 1 percent y 0.5 percent C weight content) powders 〈100?µm were pressed at room conditions and then heat-treated at 600°C. The tests showed improvements in wear resistance as the graphite content decreases, achieving the optimal behavior at 1 percent content.

Notes: Two 5W-30 synthetic-base phosphorus containing (commercial) and phosphorus-free (P-free) crankcase oils were tested for engine performance characteristics, engine emissions and poisoning effects of oil additives on a three-way catalytic converter using engine dynamometer. The emission data of the two oils taken during engine operation were compared in the absence and presence of the catalytic converter. Surface characterization was used to determine the poisoning catalyst effect accumulated from the oil additives in the ceramic washcoat. Oil analyses were also used to examine the condition of the lubricant occurred during engine performance testing operation. The experimental engine performance tests indicated that the catalytic converter diminished the torque and power for the commercial and P-free oils, whereas the specific fuel consumption increased for both oils in the presence of the catalytic converter.

Notes: The increasing demand for fine pitch interconnections has led to a growth of interest in anisotropically conductive adhesives (ACAs) as an alternative to solder joints in high density applications. The understanding of the conduction mechanisms for ACAs is of vital importance when choosing the right adhesive for a specific application. In the conductivity model, a formula has been created that can be used to estimate how the degree of deformation of the particles effects the resistance, especially in the case of soft metal-coated polymer particles. Using this model, it is possible to estimate the total contact resistance. Some comparisons are made with real measurements for gold and indium-tin-oxide (ITO) surfaces, using gold-coated polymer particles and gold bumped chips. For gold surfaces, the measurements have shown reasonably good correlation with the model. In the case of the ITO surface, the interface resistances seem to be the major part of the total resistance.

Notes: Enclosed print heads have recently been developed as an improvement on the traditional squeegee methods for solder paste printing. They offer the opportunity of widening the printing process window and reducing process waste. Consequently, this work was undertaken to evaluate some aspects of enclosed print head printing, and it has been shown to be a robust process. A number of performance factors were established: with increased humidity the paste degradation was limited due to its sealed paste reservoir; the system also permitted successful intermittent printing over a 5 day period; printing is much more tolerant to distorted substrates than some squeegee blades, and hence improves printing on non-planar surfaces; significant reduction in paste wastage occurs, since paste ageing is reduced.

Notes: In this paper, the interaction kinetics between eutectic PbSn solder and Au/Ni/Cu metallisation of plastic ball grid array packages during laser reflow bumping were investigated. The effects of processing variables, including laser reflow power and time, on the morphology of the intermetallic compounds formed at the solder/pad interface were studied by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry. Furthermore, dissolution and diffusion of Au and Sn inside the solder bump within the duration of the laser heating was analysed by Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). The results reveal that the morphology of the intermetallic compounds was strongly influenced by the laser input energy. The AES results showed that Au atoms dissolved rapidly into the solder after the solder was melted.

Notes: This preliminary research revolute the conventional clothing design process by true designs from three-dimensional (3D) rather than two-dimensional. The aim of the research is to develop a handy 3D clothing design software tool for general garment designers. Work carried out in this paper is the preliminary result of the 3D software infrastructure. In addition, 3D collar design based on a mathematical formula is accomplished as a template for other garment portions. Object-oriented technology is invoked as a tool for software developing. The system is divided into two major modulus, the user interface and the kernel. The user interface is used to collect messages from the users, and then send it to the kernel for further computations. Moreover, it exhibits real-time pictures received from the kernel. The major work of the kernel is to handle the operations that are called by the user interface. In this paper two basal collars, convertible collar and shirt collar, are illustrated as diversified figurations.

Notes: Fabric design has always been a matter of inspiration, depending mostly upon man's ingenuity and creativity. The authors suggest that creation of fabric patterns using evolution algorithms, which can not only help in improving design created by man, but also make the procedure semi-automatic, meaning much less dependent upon the designer himself/herself. Evolution algorithm based software offers a wide range of fabric patterns and is also able to create new ones based on the user's choice. The procedure can also be of considerable help to professional designers, as it can offer patterns they would not or could not create themselves. The system described is inexpensive and can be used on IBM compatible personal computers. It is user-friendly and can be implemented with no previous preparation on the part of the user. The results of preliminary investigations suggest a practical applicability of the software.

Notes: A non-linear numerical simulation of a standard procedure for textile flexibility testing is performed using discretised beam bending model. Geometric non-linearity due to large deflections is traced using incremental method. Linear moment-curvature response is assumed, as well as constant curvature of a finite element of the beam. Numerical procedure is incorporated into a PC programme producing graphical results for the deformed shape of the specimen, non-linear load-deflection diagrams and internal force distributions in deformed state. Finally, the method is applied to compute the flexural stiffness of textile materials from the data produced by the standard procedure for flexibility testing.

Notes: More and more disposable goods are available in surgical rooms. Rules and standards have been proposed in order to prevent infection from patient to surgical team and vice versa. A proposed mandatory European standard prEn 13795 "Surgical drapes, gowns and clear air suits used as medical devices, for patients, clinical staff and equipment", is being developed by the Committee of European Normalisation and specifies the basic performance requirements and test methods for single-use and reusable materials after sterilisation process. Therefore, the performances of the surgical gowns demand a balance between barrier and comfort properties. In comfort evaluation, tactile feeling is one of the most primary and important aspects with regard to the grading of the products. Therefore, the influence of the sterilisation process on the tactile perception is important to be evaluated. Subsequently, the final aim of this paper is to contribute to the knowledge of influence of sterilisation treatment on the tactile perception.

Notes: Many organizations have moved from stand-alone business information systems applications to integrated enterprise-wide systems, enterprise resource planning (ERP). The implementation of ERP packages has created an opportunity to re-engineer business processes within and beyond the organizational scope. Most notably, SAP R/3 has been widely implemented to create value-oriented business processes that enable a high level of integration, improve communication within internal and external business networks, and enhance the decision-making process. Though many organizations have reported dramatic improvements from SAP R/3 implementation, others have experienced difficulties in getting the R/3 modules aligned with other business components and systems. This paper describes a case study of a failed implementation of SAP R/3 to re-engineer the business processes of a major manufacturer. Lessons in terms of factors that led to failure and their future implications are discussed in the light of the contrasting experiences of several best practice companies.

Notes: This article addresses service marketing and service delivery over the Internet. Some service activities - information, education and entertainment - can be delivered as well as promoted over the Internet. An empirical study focusing on museums has been carried out. The purpose has been to describe the current use of the Internet by Swedish museums and propose some strategies with regard to its value as a service delivery tool. The 371 Swedish museums that have a homepage have been examined. Of these, 156 museums operate their own Web site. The study has consisted of a content analysis of the sites as well as a questionnaire study and two preliminary in-depth interviews. A cluster analysis was carried out, resulting in four groups being defined. It is found that the use of the Internet is still in its infancy. Three strategies for Internet service delivery are proposed.

Notes: Despite discussions of the increasingly global character of information systems (IS), IS research remains highly "Western-centric" both in terms of its subjects of study and the nationalities of the authors. Researchers interested in IS in non-Western settings are thus reliant on a fragmented and not easily accessible literature that presents a potentially distorted picture of IS practice in these regions. This paper explores this situation through an examination of the literature relating to IS in Egypt (both directly, but also as a Middle Eastern, Arab or Islamic country). A macro analysis of these studies indicates that they are predominantly positivistic in epistemology, quantitative in methodology and focused on economic development and national culture. Although many of the studies make comparisons with other countries in the region, the explicit, or sometimes implicit, point of reference is almost invariably with "the West". This is repeated in a detailed analysis of individual studies. Implications of these findings for research on IS in non-Western settings are discussed.

Notes: This paper describes Jordan's strategy to develop a strong ICT sector that will be internationally competitive. This strategy is analysed in two ways. First, by a comparison with two countries, Ireland and Singapore, with similarities as nation states and which are widely seen as successful in promoting and sustaining strong ICT sectors. Second, through an analysis of Jordan as a competition state where the role of the state is being redefined so as to implement policies in a globalising world. It is found that Jordan exhibits many of the characteristics of a competition state in terms of the promotion of mixtures of public and private partnerships and in developing relations with international agencies and multinational enterprises to create a strong ICT sector. Using these analyses, the prospects for Jordan's initiative are assessed and issues that will be of importance for its success are pointed out.

Notes: Knowledge management (KM) research lacks a common conceptual core; it is cross-disciplinary, addresses a wide variety of phenomena, and has difficulty distinguishing itself from many related areas of research. The result is a fragmented field that is itself artificially split from the related literature on organizational learning. KM may be progressing through a predictable life-cycle that could end in collapse of the KM concept unless researchers can develop more integrative core theories of learning- and knowledge-related phenomena in organizations. The diverse body of organizational learning and knowledge management research provides an impressive foundation for the synthesis of such broader theories of learning and knowledge that are creative, new, and integrative.

Notes: Personal knowledge exchanges refer to Web-based institutions that facilitate the matching of individual sources and recipients of knowledge, structure their interaction, set ground rules for price discovery and support the transfer of knowledge. While these exchanges are patterned on electronic marketplaces for tangible products, they need to accommodate the often tacit, situated and complex nature of knowledge and the challenges associated with its transfer and assimilation. It is by recognizing the specific characteristics of knowledge and associated learning processes that knowledge exchanges can enhance their value for members. Based on theory-driven insights and case studies of first-mover enterprises, implications for research and practice related to the design of personal knowledge exchanges are discussed.

Notes: This paper takes a social shaping of technology approach to identify and explain sources of conflict in the design or enhancement of corporate Web sites. Data from a multi-case field study show how Web site classification schemes embedded in Web site design elements created intra-organizational conflicts because the schemes could not equally accommodate different sub-units' customer requirements. Interview data demonstrate Web managers' perceptions that Web classification schemes privileged certain sets of customer needs, and Web managers' actions to shape the design of classification schemes to satisfy their perceived customer needs. Data analysis identified three design elements of Web sites associated with sub-unit conflict: classification categories, templates and tool bars, and database entities and attributes.
