    Notizen: Describes a networked virtual environment, a type of virtualreality most commonly known as a "MUD" or a"MOO", which was used at an internationally-attendedscientific conference held on the Internet. Interviews with conferenceattendees indicated enthusiasm for the effectiveness of the medium, andrevealed how the virtual environment can be modified to improveconferencing efficacy. Such alterations included: novel input-outputcontrol management; automation of conference registration; control ofanonymous or guest connections; simplification of conference centertopography; an improved methodology for recording discussion sessions;use of moderated rooms to compensate for network lag; and providingbuffers to update late arriving participants. Concludes that networkedvirtual environments provide an inexpensive means for effectiveinternational conferencing on the Internet.

    Notizen: Provides a new answer to the resource discovery problem, which arises because although the Internet makes it possible for users to retrieve enormous amounts of information, it provides insufficient support for locating the specific information that is needed. ALIBI (Adaptive Location of Internetworked Bases of Information) is a new tool that succeeds in locating information without the use of centralized resource catalogs, navigation, or costly searching. Its powerful query-based interface eliminates the need for the user to connect to one network site after another to find information or to wrestle with overloaded centralized catalogs and archives. This functionality was made possible by an assortment of significant new algorithms and techniques, including classification-based query routing, fully distributed cooperative caching, and a query language that combines the practicality of Boolean logic with the expressive power of text retrieval. The resulting information system is capable of providing fully automatic resource discovery and retrieval access to a limitless variety of information bases.

A central theme in this project is informationliteracy - the ability to access, evaluate, and use informationfrom a variety of sources. Helping students acquire these skills is keyto their successful use of online resources, as well as their continuedease in learning later in life. The TeleLearning Mobile Unit (TMU)provided a unique means to conduct training, in which 24 participantshad simultaneous access to online resources. All participants are todevelop a classroom project integrating online resources into the K-12curriculum. By late spring 1995, all Telemation projects should beonline, available as models for all K-12 teachers.

FAST-1 gives a direct reading of fabric thickness over a range of loads with micrometre resolution. FAST-2 measures the fabric bending length and its bending rigidity. FAST-4 is a quick test for measuring fabric dimensional stability, including both the relaxation shrinkage and the hygral expansion.

    Notizen: The merchandising process of a large buying office in Hong Kong was studied using a network analyses tool, programme evaluation and review technique (PERT). Quantitative and qualitative data were both obtained by in-depth interviews with key people in the company. The delivery lead time, which was the cycle time from the receipt of an order by the buying office to the point where the garment lot was ready for shipment at the manufacturer's factory, was determined quantitatively, and probabilities of late shipments analysed. For bulk orders of woven garments, the activity time of fabric manufacture and garment manufacture was found to account for about half and one-third, respectively, of the total delivery lead time (about 69 days). Also the PERT was shown to help identify critical activities which were redundant and thereafter, through process re-engineering, could shorten the delivery lead time and reduce the work load of the merchandiser.

That is, for the visualtask conversants were more effective in the face-to-face and audio andvideo modalities than in the audio-only modality; for the non-visualtask, conversants were more effective in the audio-only modality than inthe face-to-face modality. Additional analysis of the non-visual taskssuggests that modality affects the extent to which asymmetry ofknowledge results in asymmetry of influence between conversants.

The practical process which lasted over a decade containedseveral theoretically interesting issues which could be formulated asmeaningful research problems. They concerned the design of acts, theevaluation of the outcomes of the various phases of the process, and theformulation of the experience to models which could be transferred toother contexts. The overall analysis method is reflection-in-action inthe form suggested by Donald Schön. Each practical problem isparaphrased through reflection-in-action which yields a theoreticalunderstanding of the phenomenon at hand. This frames the situation; theframing is necessary for the solution that is to be designed. Indicatesthat reflection-in-action can yield research results just as valid asother types of organizational studies. It is not superior to otherpossible approaches such as action research or organizationalethnography, but the threats to its quality, like the danger ofpartiality and revisionism of the investigator involved, are compensatedfor because the researcher has excellent access to the targetorganization and even confidential data.

Places emphasis on practical analysis of tailorability of difficult lightweight wool fabrics, providing subsequent solutions for the making-up of such fabrics. In tailorability prediction analysis work, in addition to analysis of overall garment production, the further analysis of part processes such as sewing, feeding and handling have also been made using TEFO's computerized methods of analysis. Results are analysed in terms of the relevant mechanical and physical properties of the test fabrics. Evaluates properties using both the Kawabata Evaluation System (KES) and Fabric Assurance by Simple Testing (FAST) sets of instruments.

The fabric model is developed based on a physical analogue to a deep shell system for describing and predicting the real 3-D shape of clothes. The fabric motion is determined by deformation energy, gravity and external constraints, such as collision forces, using the deformable node bar concept. The advantages of this model are that engineering parameters can be used as model parameters directly and that the model is configured based on the surface co-ordinate system, which is believed to be important as the basis of a powerful fashion CAD system. The model successfully simulated fabric drape and has been implemented on a synthetic female model.

    Notizen: Presents a standard data format for describing and interpolating 3-D human body shapes from data collected by a 3-D body scanner. The body data were treated as a series of horizontal cross-sections. Each cross-section was described by 16 data points. The 3-D surface can be calculated by interpolating between these sections. This procedure allowed editing and manipulation of raw scanned data, as well as substantial data reduction. Horizontal cross-sections of the body were chosen to correspond to particular anatomical surface landmarks, rather than distances from a reference point. Hence, each data element described a particular anatomical location, irrespective of body shape and size. This feature allowed comparison and averaging of 3-D shapes, greatly enhancing the application of 3-D scanned data. The standard data format allows 3-D scanned data to be transferred into CAD/CAM systems for automated garment design and manikin manufacture.

Proposes different views to explain preferences forexternal employment relationships: a market perspective which emphasizeseconomic factors, and a cultural perspective which views organizationsas an expression of patterned values. Examines the efficacy of eachapproach by providing an empirical investigation of the extent to whichIS workers are externalized in the USA and Singapore. Results suggestthat the USA utilizes more externalized IS employment structures thanSingapore. These results are interpreted from both market and culturalperspectives.

The business community, however, has been slow to adopttelecommunications and its enabled technologies - electronic datainterchange (EDI) in particular - owing to a general lack ofunderstanding of the benefits available from their effectiveutilization. Describes an education-oriented approach designed toencourage greater acceptance of telecommunications and EDI by educatinguniversity students - the managers of the future - aboutapplied telecommunications in an international environment. Discussesalso the cultural and cross-cultural experiences of the students whoparticipated in this pilot project. The results indicate that there isevidence to support the hypothesis that EDI is an appropriate exemplartechnology for teaching applied telecommunications in an internationalenvironment; and that a laboratory-based strategy is an effective way ofusing EDI to achieve this objective and providing students withexperience of the cultural and cross-cultural factors involved ininternational commerce.

    Notizen: Various staff methodologies of a just-in-time (JIT) apparel assembly cell with various numbers of walking workers, and various levels of process time variation were discussed and evaluated by simulation models. Decouplers are placed between two workstations (or subcells) to improve capability and flexibility in an apparel cell. Decouplers enable JIT pull cells to operate with minimum stock-on-hand and allow parts and information to flow in opposite directions. Decouplers also provide the JIT pull cell with "make one, check one, and pass one on" capability. A manned assembly cell's throughput rate depends on the number of workers in the cell and on the variation in each worker's processing time. Normally, as the processing time variation increases, the throughput rate decreases. However, these simulation studies show that doubling the decoupler capacity increases the cell's output, even as the processing time variation increases.

Many reasons have been suggested for this, one of which is the lack of appropriately skilled designers and pattern cutters. Comments on this situation and describes a garment CAD-training programme set up at De Montfort University, Leicester. This training programme was used as the basis of an attitude assessment. Evidence from across Europe suggests that neither of these preconditions are currently sustainable. Team-based systems of production have thus attracted growing interest in the developed world because they appear to offer a mode of production relevant to the market conditions of the 1990s. Such systems can also create considerable improvements in job quality for employees. However, carefully planned support is needed to ensure that the potential benefits of teamworking are realized, and this has implications for the delivery of public policy, vocational training and consultancy.

A total of 199 judges were divided into two panels according to their experience in the textile and clothing industry. Low levels of agreement were found which signify the errors inherent in subjective assessment of fabric handle. The analysis was extended to include fabric assurance by simple testing (FAST) data on the mechanical properties of these fabrics in order to establish whether there was any relationship existing between the judges' preferences and the fabric mechanical parameters. Highlights shear rigidity, formability and bending rigidity as the most influential properties for the determination of fabric total hand value (THV). Moreover, establishes a validated THV equation to predict fabric handle assessment by using objective data. Demonstrates that the mean of the assessment and a substantial amount of individual subjective handle assessment can be explained by the model.

    Notizen: Endeavours to determine the physiological and perceptual responses to forearm cold water immersion as influenced by the use of an experimental fireproof carbonaceous insulation (ECI), Thinsulate (a commercial insulation), and Nomex flight gloves. The primary objective was to determine if ECI could provide adequate protection from cold water immersion while providing superior protection from fire. Physiological responses including rectal and skin temperatures to –1 degree C water were recorded. Perceptions of thermal discomfort and grip strength were also measured. The experimental carbonaceous insulation was able to provide better thermal protection as evidenced by significantly higher skin temperatures than the Thinsulate. Subjects perceived the Thinsulate gloves to be only slightly more comfortable than the ECI gloves. Both ECI and Thinsulate provided negligible loss of grip strength. The Nomex gloves provided virtually no thermal protection and substantial loss of grip strength post-immersion.

    Notizen: Much of the evaluative research on groupware in organizations sofar has been preoccupied with the role of groupware as a new interactionmedium to replace or extend face-to-face communication in groups. It hasfocused on gains and losses from a group interaction point of view,typically disregarding the impact of other functions such as groupaccess, and contribution to information concerning the organization.Attempts to bridge this gap with an action research into the effects ofthe introduction of an asynchronous groupware system to support businessprocess improvement groups in a service company based in Brazil. Theresearch suggests that improvements in business redesign efficiency andeffectiveness can be attained not only from asynchronous groupwaresupport to group communication, but also from public sharing ofhistorical information about previous business process improvementefforts, and by providing a repository of information about businessprocesses which could be candidates for improvement. Concludes with theproposal of an explanatory model, describing the relationship betweenthe introduction of technology, its integration with a business processimprovement meta-process, and its effects on the efficiency andeffectiveness of that meta-process.

Although a clear understanding of the mechanics and benefitsof alternative MPC systems exists, very little is known about therelationships between such systems, the strategic environment faced bythe user-firms, and their performance in achieving cost/competitiveadvantage. Historically, the choice of an MPC system appears to havebeen made based solely on available in-house expertise, industry trends,or plain inertia. Reports a summary of the results of a survey conductedto explore empirically the relationship between the environmentalcharacteristics faced by the manufacturing function and manufacturingperformance of firms using alternative MPC systems. Presents the resultsof an analysis of the environment faced by best and worst performersusing different MPC systems. The results indicate key linkages betweenthe MPC systems, environment, and performance.

Presents this model, discusses itsbackground, in particular the prerequisites of a model to be useful formanagement, assesses its validity using the results of 19 case studies,and indicates directions for further research needed to improve theutility of the model for management.

Presentsobservations gleaned in Japan and South Korea on the issues faced byspring manufacturers in terms of JIT, quality control and otherworkplace factors. Concludes that the style of management operated bythe client firms, especially in Japan, would not be appropriate in theUK. Also, since the psychological characteristics of UK persons arequite unlike those of the Orientals, we should be wary of importing,without modification, the work practices which seem to be acceptable inJapan and South Korea.
