    Notes: The purpose of this study was to investigate contact nucleation for various types of crystalline materials. Selected were aqueous solutions of two hydrated inorganic salts (MgSO4 · 7H2O and KAl(SO4)2 · 12H2O), one nonhydrated inorganic salt (K2SO4) and one organic substance (citric acid). Nucleation data were determined as number of nuclei generated per contact as a function of supersaturation and impact energy. Both of these variables strongly influenced the number of nuclei generated per contact. These data show that crystal growth and contact nucleation are related, with more rapidly growing substances giving higher yields of nuclei.

    Notes: The objective of this study was to determine the mixing characteristics of two-phase, confined, coaxial jets. Gas composition, gas velocity, and particle mass flux radial profiles were obtained at different axial stations using 20% by weight of 6 or 30 μm spherical aluminum particles in the primary stream. Additional tests were conducted without particles. Radial profiles for gas composition, velocity, and particle flux were correlated using the principle of similarity. In the gas phase, mass mixed more rapidly than momentum, and the 6 μm particles mixed less rapidly than mass or momentum. Systems with low primary density and low secondary velocity mixed most rapidly. An implicit numerical model was developed to predict the rate of mixing of the gas/particle mixture. The model included coupled dynamic and thermal nonequilibrium effects between the gas and solid phases. Comparisons of model predictions and experimental results were good.

    Notes: Two effects not considered in previous work can significantly influence stability of moving displacement fronts in porous media. They are transport near the front and expansion or contraction accompanying phase change or chemical reaction at the front. It is shown that both effects act to stabilize a moving front at which steam condenses and displaces water. Available experimental data confirm that such a front is more stable than would be expected based on previous work. The effects should be important in steam drive and underground combustion processes for improving oil recovery and in processes involving moving reaction fronts in packed beds.

    Notes: The concept of the effectiveness, factor, commonly used as a means of accounting for diffusional effects in gas-solid catalytic and noncatalytic reactions, is extended to gas-liquid reactions. The relevant differential equations for an isothermal system with appropriate boundary conditions are solved for the case of (1) a simple first-order irreversible reaction, (2) a consecutive reaction, and (3) a parallel reaction. The results are presented in terms of effectiveness factor plots, and methods of delineating the controlling regimes are discussed. It is shown that gas-liquid reactions represent perhaps the most general case which reduces to gas-solid reactions under appropriate limiting conditions.

    Notes: This paper presents a unified approach for obtaining system reliability and availability parameters from block diagram representations of process systems. It starts with computer algorithms for obtaining the minimal paths in a system, then shows how this information can be combined with unit reliability data to obtain the overall system reliability, and the response of system reliability to changes in unit reliability (sensitivities). It then demonstrates how these sensitivities can be used to optimize the system reliability and availability by equipment redundancy. Extension of the methodology to the automated production of system fault trees as well as the mathematical relationship between fault trees and block diagrams are noted.

    Notes: Application of Hildebrand's theory of the solubility of microsolutes in ordinary solvents, and of the Flory-Huggins theory to the solubility of steroids in polymers, has permitted the derivation of a predictive correlation between polymer permeability and steroid crystalline melting temperature, other correlating parameters being the entropy of fusion of the steroid and the (computed) solubility parameters of steroid and polymer.     Notes: Complex aqueous suspensions containing a nonionic surfactant, phosphates, silicate, hypochlorite, oil, and kaolinite particulates are subjected to continuous flow membrane ultrafiltration with noncellulosic membranes. The ultrafiltrate water flux and the rejections by the Millipore PSAL membrane of total organic carbon, surfactant, and total phosphate are related by stepwise, multiple linear regression analysis (logarithmic model) to transmembrane pressure difference, thin channel velocity, membrane resistance, and feed solution concentration. The variables are adjusted to eliminate gel polarization and to minimize concentration polarization.The data are extended, by the development and use of a computer simulation scale-up procedure, to a 1 000 cm3/s (23 000 gal/day) laundry waste treatment and water recovery unit. The procedure considers banks of modules in series, banks in parallel, and a parallel-series-tapered arrangement. Membrane area requirements per unit ultrafiltrate water flux and solute rejections are predicted for water recoveries up to 95% of the inlet flow rate.

    Notes: The product distribution and kinetics of the thermal cracking of propane and propane-propylene mixtures were investigated for a temperature range of 700° to 850°C, exit total pressures from 1.2 to 2 atm. absolute, and steam dilutions of 0.4 and 1.0. The reaction kinetics were determined by two methods. The first uses the equivalent reactor volume concept to reduce the data to isothermicity before attempting the kinetic analysis. The second determines the parameters directly from the nonisothermal data by means of a search routine. Both methods led to a reaction order of 1. The effect of propylene addition was also investigated. Finally, a detailed molecular reaction scheme was derived from a nonisothermal and nonisobaric simulation of the cracking experiments. This scheme was used in the simulation of an industrial cracker and led to excellent agreement, in particular of the product distribution.

    Notes: Countercurrent flow of liquids in columns packed with Raschig rings was studied with fluids having a wide range of physical properties. These results, along with data reported previously from other studies, were used to develop a correlation for predicting flooding rates in packed columns that is significantly better than previous correlations. Dispersed phase holdup in packed columns can be estimated over a wide range of flow rates or flow ratio by assuming a constant slip velocity between the two phases which is dependent on the properties of the fluids and packing used. Although the slip velocity is thus essentially constant at flow rates below flooding, the flooding rate correlation indicates that this term is not necessarily constant at flooding conditions.

    Notes: Measurements of diffusion and partitioning of nearly monodisperse polystyrene, having molecular weights of from 600 to 670,000, in chloro-form and dichloroethane and of two proteins in aqueous solution were made with leached borosilicate glass cubes having a narrow pore size distribution and pore radi of from 2.5 to 47.6 nm. With increasing ratio of molecular to pore size, the partition coefficient for all solutes decreased; the ratio of effective to bulk diffusivity decreased for the proteins but remained constant for polystyrene. This suggests that polystyrene behaved like a free-draining macromolecule under the conditions of this study.

    Notes: Dielectric constants and Clausius-Mossotti functions (CM) have been determined for selected pure components, binary mixtures, and ternary mixtures at temperatures between 91 and 115 K and pressures near saturation. Excess Clausius-Mossotti functions (CME) have been calculated from the pure fluid and mixture values.Mixture CME values are found to be generally less than 0.1% of the mixture CM values for systems containing only nonpolar species. Thus, dielectric constant measurements can be conveniently used as substitute density measurements for simple liquid mixtures. Methods have been developed to utilize dielectric constant measurements to accurately determine densities and heating values per unit liquid volume for liquefied natural gas mixtures.

    Notes: In this study a new mathematical model for predicting permeabilities of porous media has been developed. The model consists of a set of cubic networks of arbitrary orientations with respect to the macroscopic flow direction. The networks consist of capillary tubes which are made up of segments of different diameters. It is shown that a cubic network of capillaries has isotropic permeability properties. The permeability model requires two pore size distributions and the porosity of the sample for the calculations. The calculated permeabilities agreed with experimental results for a wide range of permeabilities of highly compacted materials to within ± 23%, without using adjustable tortuosity factors.

    Notes: Inception criteria for droplet entrainment in concurrent gas-liquid film flow were developed from simple physical models. For film Reynolds number ≳ 160, an entrainment model based on the shearing off of roll-wave crests was used. At lower film Reynolds numbers, a wave undercutting mechanism was introduced. Experimentally observed abrupt changes in the critical gas velocity corresponding to the onset of entrainment at a certain film Reynolds number have been explained by the shift in the entrainment mechanisms. An agreement of the present inception criteria with various experimental data is shown to be satisfactory, and significant improvements over the existing empirical correlations have been made.

    Notes: General equations for (1) thickness, (2) specific holdup, and (3) specific flow rate of non-Newtonian films under conditions of plane free drainage with negligible inertial and interfacial tension forces and normal stresses as functions of position and time are derived. Use of these equations reduces the heretofore tedious process of derivation for a particular rheological model of expressions for film thickness, holdup, and flow rate to a single-step operation for film thickness and relatively simple processes for holdup and flow rate. The general equations are evaluated for popular non-Newtonian models, with description of efficient methods for doing so, and the results for thickness, holdup, and flow rate, many new, in compact dimensionless form made available to the interested reader in a supplement.

    Notes: Liquid holdup and mass transfer rates were measured in a 2.58-cm I.D. tube, packed with glass beads and granular CuO · ZnO catalyst or β-naphthol particles, and operated as a trickle bed. Gas-to-liquid (water) transport coefficients were determined from absorption and desorption experiments with oxygen at 25°C and 1 atm. Liquid-to-particle mass transfer was studied using β-naphthol particles.Holdup and both mass transfer coefficients were unaffected by gas flow rate but increased with liquid rate. The data were correlated with equations that could be used for predicting mass transfer coefficients at high temperatures and pressures for use in the reaction studies reported in Part II.

    Notes: Dilute solutions (132 ppm) of formic acid in water were oxidized with air in a trickle-bed reactor at 212° to 240°C and 40 atm. Particles 0.291 and 0.0541 cm in diameter, prepared from a commercial CuO · ZnO catalyst, were used to provide a model system for studying water purification by catalytic oxidation.Differential reactor runs were made to measure the global rate of reaction. These data were compared with predicted rates from the known intrinsic kinetics and intraparticle diffusivities, and the mass transfer coefficients measured in Part I.High conversion (of formic acid) data were also obtained in order to test models for trickle-bed reactors. Experimental conversions agreed reasonably well (within 10%) with predicted values based upon intrinsic kinetics and the several transport rates. Axial dispersion was found to be less important than gas-to-liquid mass transfer and intraparticle diffusion. In our laboratory studies (reactor I.D. = 1 in.) careful arrangements were made to obtain nearly uniform distribution of liquid over the reactor cross section. Hence effects of maldistribution, which may be important in large-scale reactors, were minimized.

    Notes: A model to determine stresses and friction forces in moving packed beds with interstitial fluid flow has been developed. The scaling parameters are determined from the governing equations. A plane and an axisymmetric bed geometry are studied and the wall stress calculated under uniform one-dimensional axial flow conditions. The effect of added transverse flow (for example, due to a screen in the wall) is investigated. The present model is an improvement over earlier, one-dimensional models with capability to include in the stress analysis varying pressure gradients in all directions which may exist in practical moving bed systems.

    Notes: A study on the effects of flow pulsations on interphase mass or heat transfer has been made. The situation corresponds to fully developed flow in a long conduit with a periodic pressure gradient at amplitudes which cause flow pulsations without flow reversal. It is shown that the basic three-parameter formulation can be reduced to a one-parameter problem in the boundary layer formulation. Solutions are developed over wide ranges of the parameters in both the basic and the boundary layer formulations.The boundary approach gives accurate results over wide ranges of the parameters. Pulsations cause increases in the time-averaged interphase flux at intermediate values of a composite frequency-space variable. However, at small values of this variable the pulsations cause a decrease in the flux such that the overall space-averaged flux is always decreased.

    Notes: The kinetics of isothermal transformations or decompositions of solids proceeding through nucleation and subsequent growth is treated in the spirit of Avrami, eliminating, however, some of the internal contradictions of his treatment. Universal solutions of the dimensionless integral equation are computed. The theory is extended to nonisothermal systems and the resulting integral equations are solved numerically for the adiabatic case. It is shown that two kinds of catastrophic behavior can occur: one is characterized by slopes approaching infinity in the conversion vs. time curve following a long period of quiescent behavior; the other is characterized by a very short time for total conversion and by milder slopes in the conversion vs. time curve throughout the course of reaction. In the first kind the nucleation is mainly responsible for the catastrophic behavior, while in the second kind the rate of growth is responsible.

    Notes: The reduction of oxygen in neutral saline solution and in seawater was studied using the rotating disk electrode (RDE). The objective was to test the applicability of the RDE as a primary reference standard for the measurement of oxygen concentrations below 0.1 ppm in seawater. Limited success was achieved with an activated platinum electrode. A gold electrode was less effective. If one postulates that the 2-electron reduction of oxygen at an activated RDE is rapid, it appears that little or no 4-electron reduction occurs and that the subsequent 2-electron reduction or catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide is relatively slow. The anodic activation procedure developed appears to impart a transient catalytic activity to the electrode surface for the peroxide reaction(s).

    Notes: The stability problem of the free coating of wires and tubes by withdrawal is formulated and solved. The necessary condition for the stability of the film coating is given explicitly in terms of the Reynolds number, wave number, the Weber number, and implicitly in terms of the withdrawal velocity. The outcome of the competition between the destabilizing capillary pinching and the stabilizing capillary restoring force associated with the film thickness variation is shown to dictate the stability of the film. The comparisons between the present theoretical results and the known experimental results for falling films and creeping annular threads of viscous liquids are good. A possible application of the present results to some aspects of the qualitative design of a coating process is given.

    Notes: Affinity chromatography and parametric pumping were combined to reduce trypsin concentration in an aqueous solution. The trypsin inhibitor, chicken ovomucoid, was covalently bonded to Sepharose 4B beads. A solution was cycled over this packing in a column at a low pH in one direction followed by a high pH in the other direction. Trypsin retention was favored at the high pH and elution at the low pH. The decrease in trypsin concentration at one end of the column was fitted to an equation derived from the equilibrium parametric pumping model and was a function of the pH limits imposed on the column. Separation was much less than predicted by equilibrium data, but the equation based on trypsin reduction agreed with the α-chymotrypsin-trypsin separation.

    Notes: Effective reaction rates and selectivities on surfaces having active and inactive regions are calculated for systems in which diffusion of reactants and products through a boundary layer is significant. With a single reaction it is shown that rates are larger than those calculated assuming area weighted averages. The selectivity of production of an intermediate in a series of reactions on a heterogeneous surface is higher than on a homogeneous surface, and with parallel reactions selectivities may be lower or higher depending on the kinetics of the competing reaction.Numerical examples from NH3 oxidation on a Pt gauze and CO oxidation in the automotive converter indicate that these effects may be important in determining selectivities and conversions in some industrial reactors.

    Notes: The equations for steady isothermal spinning of a viscoelastic liquid are solved for a fluid model with constant modulus and a single constant relaxation time. High stress levels are predicted for elastic liquids, and the velocity approaches a linear profile in the limit of maximum drawdown. These predictions are in accordance with the observed behavior of polymeric liquids in isothermal spinning. Relaxation times computed from spinning data of Spearot and Metzner and Acierno et al. for four low density polyethylene melts are comparable to those measured rheogoniometrically, though the spinning relaxation times are 20 to 80% larger.

    Notes: The application of monolithic catalysts to automotive emission control has frequently been complicated by unexplained thermal degradation phenomena. This paper reports experimental and theoretical studies aimed at the understanding of how heat is generated and distributed in catalytic monoliths during an exothermal, mass transfer limited reaction.Theoretical considerations indicate that under certain operating conditions the steady state solid catalyst temperature can exceed the adiabatic reaction temperature. It is also shown that the catalyst overtemperature is influenced by the nature of the reactive species and by the geometry of the catalyst. These predictions have been verified by experiments in a novel tubular reactor.

    Notes: A Deborah number is introduced as a means of characterizing diffusional transport in amorphous polymer-solvent systems. Two types of temperature-penetrant concentration diagrams are constructed, and the various regions on these figures are identified by their Deborah number values. The utility of the diffusion Deborah number is demonstrated by using this dimensionless group to anticipate conditions under which thickness anomalies can be expected in sorption experiments for the atactic polystyrenepentane system.

    Notes: Generalized van der Waals theory is used to establish a partition function that considers the effect of density on rotational and vibrational motions in addition to translational degrees of freedom. A three-parameter equation of state is derived from this partition function. The equation of state is applicable to small, spherical (argon-like) molecules and also to large, structurally complex molecules, including polymers. Parameters are presented for three polymers and twenty-two common fluids including light hydrocarbons, heavy hydrocarbons, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, sulfur dioxide, and water. The equation of state gives good liquid densities, and vapor pressures, and fair second virial coefficients.

    Notes: The vapor-liquid equilibrium of the hydrogen-n-butane system was studied at temperatures between 54° and 121°C and at pressures up to 167 atm. The fugacity of hydrogen in the vapor phase was measured directly by using a palladium-silver semipermeable membrane, whereas p-T-x-y data were obtained in a conventional manner.Henry's constants for hydrogen in n-butane were obtained from the experimental fugacity data without making any assumptions about the vapor phase. Constant-pressure, liquid-phase activity coefficients for both hydrogen and n-butane were calculated and correlated by using a modified van Laar equation.

    Notes: Quantitative theories based on first principles are derived to explain the roles of heat and mass transfer in the attainment of steady state or ultimate separation in closed direct-thermal-mode parametric pumps. The theoretical results are in agreement with applicable experimental data, including the experimental anomaly called reversed separation. Under conditions when the axial dispersion is much greater than molecular diffusion, the theory predicts and experiments confirm that 1/ln(α∞) varies in a linear way with fluid displacement at constant frequency. An additional asymptotic result suggests that when Sh » PeM, there is a simple linear connection between 1/ln(α∞) and PeM which is supported by experimental data.

    Notes: A correlation is developed for predicting in-situ (or true) liquid holdups for two-phase, gas-liquid slug flows in inclined pipes. The correlation is based on experimental data collected in pipes ranging from 2.54 to 7.94 cm in diameter with the air-water system used.The experimental data used to develop the correlation were collected at zero input liquid qualities, as previously discussed by Greskovich (1973), and extended over the entire range. These data revealed little diameter effect on holdup for diameters greater than 2.54 cm but a marked effect of angle of inclination. Predicted holdup values show good agreement with experimental data.

    Notes: The sorption of dissolved oxygen on activated carbon was characterized with manometric and packed column apparatus. All carbons tested, granular and powdered, virgin and reactivated, sorbed 150 to 600 μmole of oxygen/g after run times up to 1 700 hr., but sitll not at equilibrium. The rate data generally conform to a model of sorption limited by intraparticle diffusion. Carboxylic acid groups increase by about 200 μeq/g as a result of dissolved oxygen sorption, which can account for at least 10 to 50% of the oxygen sorbed. Also, about 5% of the sorbed oxygen can be eluted into deoxygenated water.

    Notes: The equations governing the shape and velocity of the polymer melt in the bubble blowing part of the blown film process are derived for non-isothermal Newtonian and isothermal elastic material behavior. Measured bubble shapes (Ast, 1973; Farber, 1973) can be reproduced quite well, lying between elastic and viscous predictions. Velocity and strain rate predictions appear more sensitive to details of temperature profile and melt rheology. The results also include bubble pressure predictions or equivalently apparent viscosities for bubble blowing. The main lines of development suggested are the modeling of heat transfer and the use of a viscoelastic constitutive equation.

    Notes: A model of an adiabatic continuously stirred-tank reactor in which a single exothermic second order-gas liquid reaction occurs has been developed. The interactions between the rate of the chemical reaction, the diffusional resistances, and the solubility may cause the occurrence of up to five steady state solutions, even though no more than three solutions can be attained when the same reaction is carried out in a sinle phase CSTR. A parametric study is used to examine the sensitivity of the model to the value of several parameters. Topological arguments are used to obtain a simple instability criterion.

    Notes: This paper describes the application of a mathematical model to a column distilling air to produce nitrogen, oxygen, and argon. The upper column of a plant producing 400 tonnes/day (400 Mg/day) of oxygen is considered. Apart from any direct interest in this system, the outcome illustrates the problems which arise in the study of the separation of multicomponent systems. The effect of directed flow compared with normal flow is established, and in particular the way in which some components benefit more than others. The simulation uses experimental values of point efficiency and mixing measurements, and a good comparison with plant experience is achieved.

    Notes: In recent years process simulation by computer has become an accepted tool in the design and control of chemical processes, but there are still uncertainties and conflicting views about the real benefits relative to cost in both chemical industry and in education.This article surveys the literature of the last three years, exploring the answers to the question: How has chemical process simulation by computer fulfilled expectations in industry and education and what are the major areas of research identifiable at this time?It is concluded that process simulation remains a very dynamic field with a continuous expansion in the areas of application and in the number of users. New subjects requiring research are replacing older areas which have matured.

    Notes: Overdesign is applied to chemical processes to account for expected variations in the design data or design conditions. These variables must be treated quantitatively in order to design a process that is certain to perform adequately. Process dependability is introduced as a means of quantifying variable process behavior. Overdesign using the dependability criterion is a stochastic optimization problem. An example problem with three stochastic variables and two design variables is presented to illustrate these procedures.

    Notes: The differential equations governing the propagation in time of the sensitivity matrix for a mathematical model given by a system of ordinary differential equations are derived. These equations are used to perform a statistical sensitivity analysis of models for chemical reactors. The behavior of the sensitivities at equilibrium is analyzed. It is shown that the sensitivity equations for linear kinetics may be solved using an analytic representation. The numerical solution of these equations is discussed, and illustrative examples are presented. The lognormal distribution is presented as being representative of errors in rate constants.
