    Notes: The pineal organ of the bluefin tuna was studied using light and electron microscopy. The pineal, an evagination in the diencephalic pallium, consists of a distal expanded end-organ and a stalk. A pineal nerve connects this end-organ to the habenular area of the diencephalon. The tissues above the pineal are modified for light transmission. Supporting cells are the most numerous type seen in the pineal tissue. The cytoplasm often contains glycogen, while the golgi apparatus is seldom seen. The plasma membrane is a complex of folded membranes interdigitating with adjacent cells. The sensory cells are characterized by a basal nucleus, a constricted neck region, and an ellipsoid region that is capped distally by lamellae. Sensory cells have the basic appearance of retinal photoreceptors. The lamellae are more disorganized than those of retinal rods, and some lamellae appear to be discharged from the cell.This study indicates that the pineal may function to deliver photoperiodic stimuli to the central nervous system, through the transmission of nerve impulses.

    Notes: The endodermal nerve nets of the scyphozoan jellyfish Phacellophora camtschatica and Cyanea capillata were stained with methylene blue. Small animals (3-7.5 cm in diameter) stained easily. The endodermal nerve net of both species is a synaptic net consisting of bipolar and some few tripolar nerve cells with unbranched neurites. The neurites terminate on other neurites. Very few free nerve endings were observed. The neurites have a diameter of 1/4-1/2 μ and there is no indication of the presence of neurites too fine to be followed in the light microscope.The gross appearance of the net changes with the size of the medusa. Staining 15-53 cm diameter animals showed that the nerve cells increase in size with the size of the animals, that the density of the nerve net decreases.The endodermal nerve net is very similar to our interpretation of the Diffuse Nerve Net of the ectoderm but without the typical primary sense cells. In both cases the appearance of branching neurites is interpreted as an artifact caused by neurites terminating on other neurites.

    Notes: Adult newts placed in an atmospheric environment of 85% oxygen, saturated humidity, and at a temperature of 20 ± 1°C survived particularly well a 44-day test period. They did not succumb to “oxygen toxicity” as has been frequently reported for other vertebrate species.Having established the newt's tolerance of high oxygen atmosphere, the effect of oxygen on growth and development in the regenerating newt limb was investigated. Under the atmospheric conditions described above, and under 92% oxygen, the regeneration of adult newt limbs appeared to be retarded during the first 25 days after amputation when compared with regenerating limbs of control animals kept under a normal atmosphere of 21% oxygen (air). Thereafter, little or no difference could be discerned between the regeneration of experimental and control limbs.It is known that molecular oxygen participates directly in the hydroxylation of proline to hydroxyproline in the synthesis of collagen. Sectioned regenerates stained specifically for collagen were examined to determine if collagen synthesis was induced in experimental animals. Two regeneration-inhibited limbs of oxygenated newts showed cicatrical repair of the apical limb stump 25 days after amputation. However, the majority of the experimental animals revealed no obvious increase in collagen fibers.These results contraindicate any marked “oxygen toxicity” affecting the life of the newts, or regeneration of their limbs. It is suggested that a change in collagen fiber type might have been induced by the high-oxygen atmosphere. Investigations to test this hypothesis are currently underway.

    Notes: The morphology of the Weberian ossicles of Astyanax mexicanus, an eyed river fish, and A. jordani, the Mexican blind cave fish, was investigated and the results were correlated with behavioral data on the auditory capacities of the two species. Several characteristics of the ossicles of the two species were inter-specifically significantly different while other characteristics varied as much intra-specifically as inter-specifically. The ascending arm of the scaphium was shorter in the blind fish than in the river fish and the ascending arm of the intercalarium was further from the distal end of the base of the bones in the blind fish than in the river fish.A previously unreported ligament between the scaphium and the sinus atrium impar was found in Astyanax. It was hypothesized that this connective tissue retained perilymphatic fluid within the inner ear, helped the ossicles return to an anterior position after moving posteriorly, and might protect the inner ear during intense acoustical stimulation.

    Notes: Changes with age in bone cortex of the rat were investigated by establishing histological parameters which could be quantitated to estimate age at death. Decalcified cross sections of mandible, femur and tibia were prepared from rats two to 120 days old, and measurements were made of: (1) number of osteons, (2) average number of lamellae per osteon, (3) average Haversian canal diameter, and (4) number of non-Haversian (primary) canals. Multiple regression techniques were used to estimate age at death from several combinations of these variables.With age, the number of osteons per unit area of bone and the number of lamellae per osteon increased, but Haversian canal diameter and the number of primary canals decreased. Multiple regression analyses indicated that age at death could be estimated to ± 3 days of the true value in 95% of the cases. Nomographs based on histological measurements of each bone were prepared which can provide accurate estimates of age between two and 120 days in the Sprague-Dawley female rat. It was concluded that microstructure of bone cortex can not only be quantitated to provide accurate estimates of age but it may also constitute a sensitive measure of the metabolic state of the organism. The techniques utilized should prove useful in anthropology as well in studies of bone aging.

    Notes: Two specimens of a group of five foetuses, 35-37 mm in total length, of Squalus acanthias were serially sectioned and stained. These specimens were studied for the purpose of testing statements made in the literature, especially by Holmgren ('40), regarding cell sources and skeletal development. Many of Holmgren's results were confirmed with some important differences in detail. Limited blastemas of dermal bones were not evident although a diffuse subepidermal blastema was present in certain areas. There is evidence of delamination addition to the jaws and many parts of the endocranium. Although the trabecula is in part of visceral origin, the visceral material does not represent an infrapharyngohyal since it always has been an integral part of the endocranium, never a formed element of the arch. The same applies to the pharyngo region of the hyoid arch. The pharyngohyal tissue forms the area of articulation of the hyomandibula and the lamina hypotica. Thus a typical lateral commissure is not formed and the resulting otic capsule-basicranial association is unique to the elasmobranchs. The hyomandibula is the epihyal and there is no evidence of a symplectic in this group. The jaws appear to incorporate delamination tissue, associated in teleostomes with dermal bone, in addition to the neural crest proper.

    Notes: In Bombyx mori the male is the homogametic sex, crossing over occurs only in males, and chiasmata are observed in spermatocytes, but not in oocyte nuclei. If the assembly of synaptonemal complexes is an essential prerequisite for genetic crossing over and chiasmata formation, then the nuclei of Bombyx spermatocytes should contain synaptonemal complexes. Synaptonemal complexes were found in spermatocytes from young four instar larvae. The structure of meiotic bivalents is described using micrographs taken with 100 and 1000 KV electron microscopes. These data together with that from the literature are used to construct a three-dimensional model of the synaptonemal complex and to suggest its method of origin and its function during crossing over.

    Notes: Queen butterflies do not mate until the male has brushed the tufts of his scented, abdominal “hairpencils„ over the female's head and antennae. The trichogen cells located at the base of each hairpencil are secretory. Presumably, these cells produce the sex pheromone necessary for mating. The liquid secretion must move from a central, microvillus-lined vesicle through the cuticle of the hairs to coat numerous, free, cuticular „dust“ particles which adhere to the hairs' surface. The dust carries the secretion to or near the female's antennae. In the pupal stage the dust particles develop as outpocketings of the hair epicuticle. An amorphous matrix, probably protein epicuticle, is deposited in the outpocketings between the cuticulin layer and plasma membrane of the hair. Before the butterfly emerges from the pupa the matrix becomes enclosed by cuticulin, and the particles pinch off from the hair.

    Notes: Light microscopy of serially sectioned nasopalatine duct remnants in ventral rostral integument of four adult (2 ♂, 2 ♀) fin whales reveals: (1) a common structure in all, (2) blindly ending nasopalatine pits 4 to 9 mm deep, (3) solid epithelial duct remnants 12 to 15 mm long, (4) lack of chemoreceptor endings, and (5) an abundance of presumed mechanoreceptors, mostly of the Pacinian category on the adoral sides, but also including some thinly encapsulated and perivascular ones that extend into the abundant connective tissue papillae of the duct remnants. Comparative and evolutionary relations of these structures are discussed.

    Notes: A morphohistological study was carried out on the pineal organ in 15 species of teleosts belonging to 12 different families. In spite of a general similarity in pineal structure in different species, there is evident a systematic diversity. The majority of species possess saccular pineal organs containing photoreceptors as prominent parenchymal components. The close anatomical relationship of the pineal organs with the relatively thin cranial roof further supports the photosensory nature of this organ in most species. However, in certain species, particularly Corydoras aneus, apparent paucity of sensory cell outer segments, parenchymal proliferation, epithelial compactness and rich vascularization suggest specializations for a predominantly nonsensory and possibly secretory function. On the other hand, the preponderance of sensory cells in the pineal organ of Symphysodon aequifasciatus and Gyrinocheilus aymoneri indicates exceptional adaptitions for a predominantly photosensory role. The results are discussed in the light of existing electron microscopic and biochemical investigations which support a secretory function of fish pineal. The need for proper selection of species for future research on pineal function is emphasized.There is also evident a close anatomical relationship between the pineal organ, the dorsal sac and the third ventricle in various species. The possibility of intramural functional relationship of the pineal with these structures and the brain is suggested.The presence of intrapineal neurones and an afferent (pinealofugal) innervation in majority of species is described. The tractus pinealis enters the posterior commissure area. In rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri, some branches, right and left, leave the posterior commissure and could be seen to move toward the habenular ganglia. Their destination remains unclear. In jack smelt, Atherinopsis californiensis, a major bundle of tract fibres follows the ventral aspect of the posterior commissure reaching what may be nuclei dorsomedialis-dorsolateralis. The possibility of direct connections with the fasciculus retroflexus is suggested. No evidence could be provided supporting existence of an efferent (pinealopetal) innervation of parenchymal cells in the pineal of species studied. It is pointed out that clarification of this aspect in future is important for a proper understanding of metabolic aspects of pineal organs in fishes.

    Notes: The structure, attachment and subsequent metamorphosis of larvae of the marine bryozoan Bugula neritina were studied by light and electron microscopy.Two points of larval anatomy are of special significance to proper interpretation of the metamorphosis: 1Two cytologically similar blastemal tissues, each laden with free ribosomes, occur as parts of the apical organ complex. The upper blastema directly contacts the larval surface, forming the non-ciliated rows of the apical organ. The lower blastema is internal and is oral to and contiguous with the upper blastema.2The epidermal tissues of the larva are joined in the following sequence, beginning at the aboral pole: a. apical organ complex; b. apical-connecting cell; c. infolded pallial sinus epithelium; d. vesicular-connecting cell; e. aboral vesicular epithelium; f. corona; g. oral vesicular epithelium; and i., j., and k. internal sac neck, wall and roof regions.The initial stages of metamorphosis involve a complex sequence of morphogenetic movements, including: 1eversion of the internal sac, permanently attaching the larva to the substrate;2inrolling of the aboral vesicular epithelium, corona, oral vesicular and ciliated epithelia, and neck region of the internal sac into the larval interior; concomitantly the pallial sinus epithelium evaginates;3loss of connection between the invaginated tissues and the surface;4fusion of the pallial sinus epithelium with the wall region of the internal sac, maintaining the integrity of the body surface;5retraction of the apical organ complex and invagination of the pallial sinus epithelium with the simultaneous elevation of the internal sac wall region to the aboral pole.At the conclusion of these events the preancestrular surface is covered by the wall and roof regions of the internal sac. Cells of the wall region form the epidermis of the body wall except for the attachment disc and secrete a cuticular exoskeleton that is secondarily calcified; the attachment disc is formed by the roof region of the internal sac.Internally, the ectodermal upper blastema differentiates into the lophophore and digestive tract of the ancestrular polypide, while the lower blastema forms the lining of the lophophoral coelom and the splanchnic (but not the somatic) lining of the visceral coelom. The visceral somatic peritoneum is formed from cells that may originate from the mesodermally derived pigmented cells of the larva to which they are similar in pigmentation and cytology. Such a composite derivation of a coelomic lining has not been described previously.

    Notes: Smears of Orconectes virilis hemolymph were prepared by fixation in 10% formalin immediately upon withdrawal, and after an interval of 1, 5, or 15 minutes. These smears were then stained by a variety of histochemical means designed to identify a material which is released from both hyaline and granular cells during the coagulation process. Based upon reactions to various carbohydrate, lipid and protein tests, this material appears to consist of a glycoor muco-protein, and its localization and activity coincide with the „fibrin ferment“ described by Hardy (1892). Its release is probably initiated from the hyaline cells, followed shortly thereafter by a similar activity of the granulocytes. While it cannot be ascertained by the methods used in this study whether or not this material participates actively in clotting, its release is nevertheless coincidental with coagulation.

    Notes: The ectethmoid-mandibular articulation in Melithreptus and Manorina (Meliphagidae: Aves) consists of the dorsal mandibular process fitting into and abutting against the ventral ectethmoid fossa; it forms a brace for the mandible. This articulation in Melithreptus is a typical diarthrosis with long folded capsular walls. The mandible, thus, has two separate articulations, each with a different axis of rotation. No other genus of Meliphagidae (except Ptiloprora) or any other avian family possesses a similar feature.The jaw and tongue musculature of Melithreptus are described. The two muscles opening the jaws are well developed, while those closing the jaws are small. The tongue muscles show no special developments.A large maxillary gland, presumably muscus secreting, covers the ventral surface of the jaw muscles. Its duct opens into the oral cavity just behind the tip of the upper jaw. The frilled tip of the tongue rests against the duct opening.The ectethmoid-mandibular articulation braces the adducted mandible against dorsoposteriorly directed forces. The mandible can be held closed without a compression force exerted by the mandible on the quadrate, permitting the bird to raise its upper jaw with greater ease and less loss of force. The tongue can be protruded through the slight gap between the jaws, moving against the duct opening and thus be coated with mucus. Presumably, these birds capture insects with their sticky tongue. Hence, the ectethmoid-mandibular articulation is an adaptation for this feeding method; it evolved independently in three genera of the Meliphagidae.The ectethmoid-mandibular articulation demonstrates that a bone can have two articulations with different axes of rotation, that the two articular halves can separate widely, and that articular cartilages can be flat and remain in contact over a large area. Its function suggests that the basitemporal articulation of the mandible found in many other birds has a similar function. And it demonstrates that in the evolution of the mammalian dentary-squamosal articulation, the new hinge did not have to lie on the same rotational axis as the existing quadrate-articular hinge.

    Notes: Observations on fine structure at the basal end of the intestinal epithelium in the midgut region of Balanus balanoides and Balanus improvisus reveal complex interrelationships among several tissues. Numerous elongate cell processes extend towards the intestinal epithelium penetrating between layers of intestinal muscle through blood spaces and into the basal lamina underlying the epithelium.Two types of morphological relationships occur between cell processes and the basal end of the intestinal epithelial cell: 1. The cell process may penetrate the basal lamina and lie closely apposed to the epithelium. 2. The cell process may give rise to narrow, medially-directed, finger-like extensions (projections). The narrow projections penetrate the basal lamina and, in addition, terminate as dilated bulbs within inpocketings of the epithelium. In some respects the cell processes are suggestive of neural tissue.

The Testes Contain Germ Cells And Supporting Cells Throughout Their Entire Length. The Former Cells Are Located In Clusters And Undergo A Spermatogenic Maturation Which Is Similar To That Described For OtherAnimals. The Supporting Cells Seem Implicated In The Nourishment Of The Germ Cells. The Vas Deferens, Which Consists Of Secretory Epithelium Surrounded By Circular And Longitudinal Muscles, Secretes The Seminal Fluid, Containing A Neutral Mucopolysaccharide Or Mucoprotein, And Stores The Mature Sperm. The Accessory Gland Consists Of Approximately 20 Pairs Of Gland Cells, Each Pair Drained By A Neck Cell And Duct Cell Into The Collecting Duct. The Glandular Secretion, Mainly A Neutral Mucopolysaccharide Or Mucoprotein, Might Function As A Lubricant, A Copulatory Plug, Or An “Activator Substance” For The Sperm Or For Fertilization. Each Penis Consists Of A Non-Eversible Part And An Eversible Part Which Is A Tortuous Muscular Tube That Connects The Vas Deferens To The Outside.

    Notes: The gross anatomy and histology of the gonads and accessory sex organs are described for male and female Presbytis e. entellus. The langur differs from other catarrhine monkeys in certain specialised characters. The “sexual skin” is not comparable to the true sexual skin of the Cercopithecinae which exhibits cyclical change during the various phases of reproduction; it is nevertheless fully developed in the adult male and serves as one of the secondary sexual characters.Certain aspects of the reproductive system strikingly resemble those of man. The combined testicular weight (0.07% body weight) is similar to the human (0.08%), and the male has ampullary glands. The cervical canal is straight like that of a baboon or man. The corpus luteum (except in the lactating female) is a hollow glandular structure. Extensive hemorrhage which always accompanies ovulation in the langur, does not appear to be a common phenomenon in any other catarrhine for which ovulation and the development of corpus luteum have been studied. The hemorrhagic remains are retained for a long time in the ovulated follicle.The ovary is characteristically large and averages 0.74 gm without corpus luteum and 1.57 gm with corpus luteum, a feature never reported in any other catarrhine monkeys. The pre-ovulatory follicle may attain a size of 14 × 14 mm.

    Notes: The general morphology of the mucous gland cell and the nature of the secretory granule in esophageal glands of the newly hatched chick have been described. Lightly basophilic supporting cells, attached to secretory cells by desmosomes and containing tonofilaments, are located on the basal lamina. Electron microscopic studies showed a morphological polarity of the Golgi complex which suggests that mucous precursors are transported from other sites within the cell to the Golgi complex for further packaging into secretory granules. Finally, acid mucopolysaccharides (AMPS) were specifically stained using the Thorotrast technique and not detected in the rough endoplasmic reticulum, the transitional elements, or in the lamellae at the forming face of the Golgi complex. Conversely, AMPS are found in the vicinity of the mature face of the Golgi complex, and in the secretory granules. The acquisition of cytochemical reactivity for AMPS within the Golgi complex is discussed.

    Notes: The presence of developmental stages of lymphocytes and their precurors, as revealed by serial and thin sections of hemopoietic organs of normal adult newts (Notopthalmus viridescens) suggests that lymphopoiesis is limited to the thymus, medulla of the spleen and, to a lesser degree, the intestine. Stromal cells, small lymphocytes, granulocytes, mature erythrocytes and melanocytes were observed either within or near the parenchyma of the thymus. The urodele thymus differs from the thymus of anurans and higher vertebrates in that it lacks a cortex and a medulla, myoid cells and Hassall's corpuscles.

    Notes: Peyer's patches of conventional adult mice are studied with light and electron microscopy. Based on cellular types and distribution, each lymphoid follicle of Peyer's patch is divisible into four zones: the germinal center, the small lymphocytic, the interfollicular and the subepithelial zones. Three distinct cell types are present in the germinal center, i.e., dendritic reticular cells; tingible body macrophages; and lymphocytes which are classifiable into large, medium and small size. The medium size lymphocytes are the great majority in this zone. The small lymphocytic zones are characterized by a predominance of small lymphocytes with a few reticular cells. The subepithelial zone has a remarkable accumulation of macrophages and plasma cells. In the interfollicular zones there are predominantly small lymphocytes with considerable round macrophages and plasma cells, and this zone is permeated with several post-capillary venules. The distinctive characteristics of small capillaries of the patches are also described.

    Notes: A falling coaxial cylinder viscometer was used to measure the melt flow behaviour of a commercial polystyrene with Mw 260,000. The shear stress region extended down to 0.6 × 104 dynes/cm2 and shear rates were as low as 3 × 10-2 sec-1 at 186°C. The shear rate-shear stress plots were linear at low shear stresses with slopes (differential viscosities) of 3.3 × 105 poises at total shear less than 120 units and decreasing differential viscosity with higher total shear. The flow curves at relatively low total shear were initially dilatant and became pseudoplastic with increasing shear stress. The inflection point represents a Newtonian apparent viscosity, which agrees fairly well with literature values for polystyrenes of the same Mw. Newtonian apparent viscosity is characteristic of a point value of shear stress and shear rate and is not necessarily a plateau region. Observation of a Newtonian region with decreasing shear stress or shear rate does not prove that this flow regime persists unchanged to zero values of the experimental parameter. The existence and magnitude of the Newtonian apparent viscosity reflects shear history of the polymer as well as its constitution and molecular weight distribution.

    Notes: The results of an experimental study of melt fracture using polystyrene samples of narrow and broad molecular weight distribution are presented. The weight average molecular weight (M̄w) ranged from 9.72 × 104 to 1.80 × 106 and the distribution breadth M̄w/M̄η from 1.06 to 9.21. The critical shear stress varies linearly with 1/M̄w, increases slightly with temperature and is independent of the distribution of molecular weights. This type of behavior is satisfactorily explained in terms of Graessley's entanglement theory.

    Notes: The interactions of γ-aminopropyltriethoxy silane (A-1100), γ-methacryloxytrimethoxy silane (A-174), γ-glycidoxytrimethoxy silane (A-187), and ethyltriethoxy silane (A-15) with silica surfaces have been studied by means of infrared spectroscopy. The results indicate that the major force holding the silane to the silica surface after application from dilute solutions is primary chemical bonding. These bonds are formed by a condensation reaction between silanols on the hydrolyzed form of the silane and hydroxyl groups on the silica surface. In the case of the amino-silane (A-1100), hydrogen bonding was found to exist but was of minor importance in bonding the silane to the surface. In studying the effects of the addition of water, acetic acid, or n-propylamine to various silane treating solutions, it was found that n-propylamine has a unique catalytic effect on the condensation reaction. This catalytic effect explains the observation that γ-aminopropyltriethoxy silane is more reactive than the other silanes studied. It is felt that silanes not containing an amine group can be made more effective if they are applied in the presence of an amine catalyst.

Based on the Jackson-Cratchley equations, modified for discontinuous fibers, a formula is also proposed for calculating the strengths of randomly oriented discontinuous fiber composites. The results calculated from this formula are compared with the experimental data for aluminum oxide-aluminum-silicon and glass-epoxy composites.

    Notes: A previous paper described the theory and equipment of Differential Thermal Analysis using High Frequency Dielectric Heating, DTA/HF. Curing studies using DTA/HF on cis-1,4-polyisoprene rubber filled with 50 phr of CaCO3 and containing from 1.5 to 4.5 phr of dicumyl peroxide (DCP) curative indicated that below about 185°C, the curing reaction was first order with respect to DCP; the mean activation energy was 32.6 kcal/mole; and the heat of reaction ranged from 60 to 80 kcal/mole DCP. These results are in agreement with published results. Above 185°C both thermodynamic and kinetic evidence implied that the reaction mechanism changed; the first order peroxide decomposition no longer controlled the overall rate of reaction.The curing of both stereo styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) and cis-1,4-polybutadiene rubber (BR) containing 50 phr of CaCO3 and 0.5 phr of DCP was found to follow first order kinetics as expected. The magnitude of the heat of curing was used to determine the frequency of a vinyl propagation-type cross-linking reaction. Eight to 36 crosslinks per molecule of DCP were obtained. This reaction became more extensive at high temperature, in agreement with published results.

    Notes: An experimental procedure is outlined to examine the potential of thermoplastic sheets in draw forming. Experiments carried out on a variety of materials indicate that the following requirements must be fulfilled for a thermoplastic sheet to be cold formable: (1) The glass transition of polymer should be above ambient temperature and above the temperature of forming, (2) tensile elongation at break should equal or exceed 30%, (3) ratio of tensile to compressive yield stress should equal or exceed 1.6 and (4) sheet must not yield locally (neck) when strained in tension.An experimental method has been developed to determine the compressive, friction and bending forces which oppose the drawing force exerted by the punch. It is shown that the compressive force is, in most cases, largest. A stress analysis is carried out leading to an expression correlating the maximum depth of draw as a function of basic properties of sheets such as tensile strength (St*) and compressive yield stress (Sc). The effect of rolling on drawability is examined and interpreted in terms of the ratio St*/Sc. The cold formed items have a lower heat distortion temperature than their thermoformed counterparts.

    Notes: A theoretical model for a short fiber reinforced composite is proposed. The composite is assumed to consist of an aggregate of sub-units, each sub-unit possessing the elastic properties of a reinforced composite in which the fibers are continuous and fully aligned. The elastic constants of a partially oriented composite are then calculated by the Voigt and Reuss averaging procedures, giving upper and lower bounds respectively for the composite modulus. Comparison is made with experimental data for such composites. The measured modulus of glass and carbon fiber composites is found to be given by the Reuss or lower bound, to a good approximation compared with the difference between the bounds, for fiber orientations ranging from almost isotropic to highly aligned.

    Notes: The utility of anisotropic ultrafiltration membranes in gas separation has been examined. These membranes consist of a thin (0.2-2μ) barrier layer supported upon a more porous supporting substructure. Gases permeate these membranes by a Knudsen diffusion mechanism. Permeabilities from 0.1 to 0.4 cm sec-1 cm Hg-1 were obtained. These values are 104 to 105 higher than most conventional gas separation membranes. These membranes may be useful in several gas separation processes.

    Notes: Investigations on the extrusion characteristics of composite systems were performed on the Sieglaff-McKelvey capillary rheometer, with particular emphasis on the characterization of flow instability and “melt fracture” phenomena. The mechanisms of melt fracture appear to be identical for both the filled and unfilled polymers (1. Polyethylene with glass beads; 2. Ethylene-propylene copolymer with graphitized carbon black). In all cases, the flow curves exhibit a plateau at some value of the shear stress. Above this shear stress plateau, melt fracture occurs. Although slip flow is the dominant mode of transport during melt fracture, the slippage in the tube may not be a necessary condition for the subsequent severe melt fracture.

    Notes: The properties of fluorocarbon plastics have made them desirable for numerous new applications. Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVF2) can be easily extruded into films or fibers or injection molded into a variety of shapes. It was found that crystallinity, molecular weight distribution and polymer structure are important in establishing resin properties. Highly crystalline PVF2 with a narrow Gaussian molecular weight distribution gives specimens with optimum physical and chemical properties.

    Notes: For certain classes of chemical reactions, it is possible to increase the yield of the desired products by choosing appropriate variable-volume operating policies. An analysis of the steady state and semibatch operation of a stirred tank reactor demonstrates operating policies for both the isothermal and adiabatic case to maximize the steady state yield and to produce an improved semibatch yield. Computations carried out by using an analogue computer with a digital logic expansion system demonstrate further relationships between yield increase and operating policy.

    Notes: Models for the laminar sublayer of turbulent pipe flow are reviewed.     Notes: The effect of viscosity and diffusivity variations on concentration polarization during the ultrafiltration of protein solutions in two-dimensional stagnation flows is investigated by numerical integration of the equations of continuity and motion. It is found that these effects are surprisingly small and insensitive to the forms of concentration dependence postulated. The high Schmidt numbers and low permeation rates characteristic of these systems result in considerable simplification of the analysis and permit use of a modified Chilton-Colburn relation for predicting the onset of sludge formation at the membrane-solution interface. The predicted dependence on Schmidt number agrees with published experimental data for other boundary-layer flows and suggests the possibility of improved prediction of equipment performance.

    Notes: Vapor-liquid equilibria data for the hydrogen-propane binary system and the hydrogen-carbon monoxide-propane system were taken at temperature of -185° to +75°. and under pressures as high as 3000 psi. Vapor-liquid data for the hydrogen-carbon monoxide-propane system are reported at -50°, 0°, and +50°. at pressures of 500, 1000, and 2000 lb./sq.in. abs. for each of the three temperatures. The Krichevsky-Kasarnovsky equation adequately correlated the solubility data of hydrogen in the liquid phase of the hydrogen-propane system. Hydrogen-propane data are compared with the data of two previous studies.

    Notes: Two methods are presented for the treatment of the nonuniform systems. Both have as a starting point the approximation of the real system by a succession of uniform systems (cells). In one of them, the nonuniformity is taken into account by attributing a free energy to the separating surfaces between the cells, while in the other by considering that the cells are under the action of an “external field” created by the nonuniformity.A distinction between small and large nonuniform systems is made by comparing the thickness of the nonuniform system with the length of the interval in which the nonuniformity is decaying. For small systems the intensive properties depend on the thickness of the system and thus some supplementary effects, as for instance the disjoining pressure, occur.An expression for the “external field” based on the formalism of the radial distribution function is proposed.A large number of phenomena, such as surface tension, adsorption, disjoining pressure, nucleation, the vapor pressure of a liquid imbibing a porous medium, the influence of a solid surface upon a chemical reaction, are treated in a unitary manner by means of the present approaches.Some previous equations such as those of Cahn-Hilliard and of Hill are derived in a different manner or justified.The objections raised by Widom against the continuous approaches are discussed.

    Notes: Conversion data for the reduction of nitric oxide with C1 to C8 hydrocarbons over a bariumpromoted copper chromite catalyst were obtained in an integral flow reactor operated at atmospheric pressure and temperatures of 225°C to 525°C. In general, an increase in carbon number in the hydrocarbon studied resulted in a decrease in the required temperature for a given nitric oxide conversion. For a given carbon number the required temperature for a given nitric oxide conversion decreased with degree of saturation. The data were fitted to empirical rate expressions.

This study includes numerical solutions of the convective diffusion equation with an entering fully developed flow. Solutions for constant properties and a constant wall boundary condition are presented over a wide range of Reynolds numbers, Schmidt numbers, and aspect ratios.An expression was developed for predicting the entry region mass transfer coefficient in both gaseous and liquid systems at ordinary fluxes with negligible interfacial velocities and at small aspect ratios. Data are also reported on concentration measurements in an air-carbon dioxide gaseous mixture with a large interfacial velocity at the inner surface of a porous pipe test section.The numerical solutions of the diffusion convection equation have been compared with the experimental data in the mass transfer entry region, and a pronounced effect of the interfacial velocity on the mass transfer coefficient was found.

    Notes: Analytical solutions are obtained for the transfer of an adsorbing solute across a liquid-liquid interface taking into account the effects of molecular diffusion in both bulk phases, adsorptive accumulation at the interface, and energy barriers to adsorption and/or desorption. These solutions show that while adsorptive accumulation alone affects the transfer rate but little, the presence of an adsorption or desorption barrier can significantly affect the bulk concentration profiles and decrease the mass transfer rate. The presence of a desorption barrier is shown to cause the dynamic interfacial tension to pass through a minimum below the steady state value. For some systems it is conceivable that the interfacial tension minimum would be sufficiently low that a slight agitation would result in spontaneous emulsification.Dynamic interfacial tension data for oil-water systems with interface ages from 0.05 to 1.5 sec. are obtained using a laminar contracting liquid jet. The data indicate the presence of a small net desorption barrier to the transfer of normal and isobutyric acids from oil to water and large barriers to both the adsorption and desorption of 1,5 pentanediol.

    Notes: A new model of packed-bed behavior based on a second-order stochastic process is developed and examined. The model takes as the basis process the transitions of fluid “packets” among allowed velocity states. The observable phenomenon, that is, the spatial distribution of packets, is a projection of the velocity state process.Results from the model compare well with results from experiments for mixing in packed beds. Model parameters are consistent, and correlate with the physical parameters of the systems. Present results under mass transfer conditions are inconclusive but encouraging.

The linearized equations valid near equilibrium and under isothermal conditions are solved. Concentration profiles predicted using a multicomponent diffusivity matrix are compared to those predicted using more approximate diffusivities. Local overshoots past equilibrium occur, but oscillations (with axial position) are not possible. A simplified diffusivity expression is found which predicts cup-mixing mole fractions in good agreement with those predicted using the multicomponent diffusivities.

    Notes: Modification of parameters in the conventional controller equation usually is necessitated by uncontrollable process parameter drifts which occur during the operation of the large scale continuous processes typically found in the chemical industry. To this end, a normalized version of the model reference adaptive control system, including suitable procedures for adjusting the adaptive loop gains, was developed and demonstrated to provide excellent adaptive performance for a single concentration control loop for a simulated stirred-tank chemical reactor. The three constants in a conventional PID controller were simultaneously adjusted to accomplish this adaptation. Equally excellent adaptive performance was achieved in an interacting control loop scheme simulated by control of both the concentration and the temperature in the same stirred-tank reactor. In both cases adaptation was achieved in a time interval which was sufficiently short to make this method of adaptive control feasible for use in a real processing situation. Models needed for implementation of the model reference adaptive control scheme were easily developed. In a real application these models could be easily developed from studies which could take place during prestartup or early operations of the process; hence no a priori knowledge would be required. A wide range of adaptive loop gains was demonstrated to provide a stable overall control system. A high degree of stability was demonstrated for the overall system despite the initiation of large extraneous load upsets occurring during the operation of the adaptive control system.The method presented has not been rigorously proven to be applicable to every real control problem requiring adaptive control. However, the method was demonstrated to be highly effective over a wide range of required controller adjustments in cases similar to those encountered in large continuous processes. Thus the method merits serious consideration for possible implementation whenever adaptive control is required.

    Notes: A new technique is derived for determining the concentration dependence of diffusion coefficients from sorption experiments. In this analysis the diffusion equation including the effects of phase volume change and volume change on mixing is solved by a weighted residual method to produce approximate analytical expressions which describe the sorption process. It is possible to deduce the concentration dependence of the diffusion coefficient from a single sorption experiment without assuming the form of the diffusivity-concentration relationship. A direct evaluation of the technique is obtained from the analysis of test data generated by finite-difference solutions of the equations which portray the sorption process.

    Notes: A single-pellet, stirred-tank reactor was used to measure temperatures, compositions, and rates of reaction for the hydrofluorination of UO2.14 at atmospheric pressure. By correlating the rate with conditions at the reacting surface, the activation energy of the first-order reaction was found to be 6,070 cal./g.-mole.Since the product forms an unreactive layer around the core of UO2.14, and since the heat of reaction is high, significant concentration and temperature differences develop between the gas phase and the reaction surface. The temperature and rate data were used to calculate the effective diffusivity and thermal conductivity of the product layer under reaction conditions.An adaptation of a pseudosteady state method was developed for predicting the conversion and temperature history of a pellet. Using rate constants for reaction and mass and energy transfer derived from the experimental data, this method gave good results. Predictions with estimated rate constants were poor, indicating that an accurate value was necessary for the effective diffusivity in the product layer.

    Notes: This paper describes a new application of modern estimation theory to nonlinear chemical processes. A particularly convenient form of the extended Kalman estimator is presented and its applications are discussed. The method described may be used to compute nonmeasureable process states and system parameters in real time with an on-line process control computer. An application of the extended Kalman filter to a six-dimensional nonlinear well-stirred reactor is discussed in detail. The results clearly indicate the feasibility of on-line application of this technique. In some cases these computations could eliminate the requirement for an on-line analysis.

    Notes: Previous work has shown that perturbation methods are useful for estimating the difference between the time average conversion obtained from an oscillating reactor and the optimum steady state value. The present study extends this approach to complex kinetic mechanisms. Both forced and self-generated oscillations are studied, and in the latter case both positive and negative feedback control systems are used to alter the shape of the oscillations. The results indicate that large improvements in yields sometimes can be observed for parallel reactions but that only small improvements are possible for consecutive reactions, in the range of system parameters considered.

    Notes: Rates of the dehydration of methanol to dimethyl ether catalyzed by cation exchange resin (polystyrenesulfonic acid) were measured with a differential flow reactor and gas chromatographic analysis. Reaction temperature was 119°C., pressure was 1 atm., and feeds were methanol and mixtures of methanol with argon, dimethyl ether, and water.Rata data for the methanol reaction as well as the previously investigated ethanol dehydration reaction are well represented by Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetics with adsorption parameters in the rate equations approximately equal to corresponding values of Langmuir adsorption equilibrium constants estimated from or available in the literature. The reaction model is consistent with previous conclusions regarding mechanism. Its pertinence suggests that at reaction conditions the ion exchange resin offers a nearly homogeneous array of catalytic sites.

    Notes: A mode of operation and a design technique have been developed which permit the attainment of continuous purging of impurities directly from the gas compartments of a fuel cell - either anode, cathode, or both - with the realization of minimum reactant loss, most stable voltage and current output, and operating conditions with respect to reactant gas flow and electrolyte inventory. We have found a way to eliminate the complex periodic purge valves and attendant electronics by a fuel cell system which is both simple in structure and operation and which has a high degree of reliability. The technique was suggested by the observation that in dead-ended fuel cell gas compartments, the inert impurities present in reactant gases tend to accumulate at the dead-ended portion of the cell. Hence a small amount of bleed should be placed there. This observation has been made analytically by solving numerically a system of two partial differential equations simultaneously.

    Notes: An interaction model is presented for the prediction of viscosities at normal pressures of gas mixtures containing a polar and a nonpolar constituent. This model is based on the principle of corresponding states and requires TR, the viscosity parameter ξ = Tc1/6/M1/2Pc2/3 for each component, and the value of zc for the polar component.Viscosity measurements available in the literature for several binary systems have been used to establish interaction coefficients which have been correlated to obtain relationships capable of predicting them. This method has been applied to 14 systems for temperatures ranging from 288° to 523°K. to produce an average deviation of 2.64% for 356 experimental values.

    Notes: A linear analysis of hydrodynamic stability has been applied to a problem in which a fluid mixture is contained between two horizontal planes. One species diffuses to the lower plane where it is destroyed by a rapid exothermic or endothermic catalytic reaction. Results show that important coupling takes place between thermal and concentration fields. This coupling gives rise to unusual stabilizing or destabilizing effects, depending upon the value of Lewis number. Several examples are discussed. It is also shown how the results can be applied to other problems involving heat and mass transfer.

    Notes: A corresponding states correlation is presented for the prediction of saturated liquid volumes. Parameters required are the critical temperature, the acentric factor, and a scaling volume. The correlation is valid over the entire useful range of reduced temperatures from 0.2 to 1.0. The full temperature range has not been covered by previous corresponding states correlations. Average absolute deviations in predicted liquid volumes is one-quarter of 1% for 26 compounds. The correlation is also useful for calculating critical temperatures, pressures, and volumes when experimental critical data are lacking. The proposed method also provides a convenient means for calculating rapidly and accurately the statistical mechanical parameters used in the cell model correlation developed by Renon, Eckert, and Prausnitz.

    Notes: An empirical rate expression was obtained for the photolysis of tetrachloroplantinic acid (TCPA). The data used to evaluate the parameters of the rate expression were obtained in an elliptical photoreactor operated at high recycle rates in order to maintain a uniform reactant concentration within the photoreactor. A low-pressure mercury lamp provided light at a wavelength of 2,537Å. The light was assumed to enter the reactor radially and uniformly with respect to both the axial and angular directions.This rate expression was incorporated in a reactant conservation equation which was solved to obtain the predicted conversion of TCPA in an elliptical photoreactor operating in the laminar regime. Solutions of the conservation equation were obtained for photoreactors of two different diameters and for three different lengths.Experimentally observed conversions of TCPA in the laminar regime agreed well with the theoretical solutions except at conversions above 55%, where a solid precipitate apparently caused the lack of agreement.

    Notes: An experimental study has been made to investigate polymer melt flow in the entrance region of a circular tube. For the study, a capillary rheometer was used to measure wall normal stresses in polymer melts in the reservoir and along the axis of the capillary. In order to investigate the influence of reservoir diameter on the entrance pressure drops, reservoir-to-capillary diameter (DR/D) ratios of 3, 6, 9, and 12 were used, with the capillary length-to-diameter (L/D) ratio being 20 and the capillary diameter being 0.125 in. Analysis of the experimental data shows that the entrance pressure drop increases and then levels off as DR/D ratio is increased. A correlation between the dimensionless entrance pressure drop and Reynolds number has been obtained, which follows the creeping flow analysis by Weissberg over the range of the area contraction ratio studied, 0.00694 〈β〈 0.111.

    Notes: Packed columns are being considered for contacting liquid metals with molten salts to extract fission products from spent nuclear fuel. Extraction rates between a liquid cadmium alloy and a liquid chloride salt were measured at 530°C. in a prototype column. With a system of water and a low melting metal alloy, measurements of the pressure drop, limiting flow rates, and hold-up were made and compared with the predictions of existing correlations. These data indicate that packed columns might be effective contacting devices for pyrochemical processes.

    Notes: The reduction in evaporation from a water substrate and the accompanying change in heat transport through the water induced by monolayers of cetyl alcohol and stearic acid are investigated. Evaporation resistance of the monolayer and Nusselt number in the water are determined at 2° to 22°C. The evaporation resistance increases with increasing surface pressure of the monolayer. In the presence of natural convection in the water, the Nusselt number decreases during monolayer compression. This reduction is larger than could be expected just from the lowered evaporative heat flux and the resulting reduction in the Rayleigh number. It may be due to a change in the surface hydrodynamic characteristics caused by the monolayer.

    Notes: The gravity-driven coalescence of 1- to 2-cm. diameter air bubbles in glycerine and in water has been studied by high-speed cinematography. The resulting coalescence behavior can be correlated by a simple model which assumes that each bubble trails a wake, and that the bubble coalescing from below accelerates when it enters the wake of the preceding bubble and thus overtakes the first bubble. The predictions of the model are not significantly altered by different assumed wake configurations.

    Notes: A mathematical study was carried out for a stirred reactor in which the feed and product streams were periodically interrupted. The cycled reactor proved superior to a continuous stirred-tank reactor for first- and second-order reactions, and surpassed a plug-flow reactor for those cases in which the reaction rate passes through a maximum, such as autocatalytic and exothermic adiabatic reactions. Temperature-programmed cycled reactors were also studied, but appeared to have little advantage over conventional reactors.

    Notes: The nature of flow choking has been studied as steam-water mixtures are passed through a tube with ever increasing pressure gradient. Choked flow for two-phase, one-component mixtures has been characterized with a separated flow model as resulting from maximization of the ratio of gas to liquid velocities, or slip ratio. Slip ratios at choking were measured and found to increase from 1.2 to 5.0 at 30 lb./sq.in. exit plane pressure with decrease in quality from 0.95 to 0.02. Separated models predict either 9.3 or 28.4 with no quality dependence. The difference is attributed to liquid entrainment. Flow regimes were observed to vary from purely entrained to annular entrained to slug entrained as quality decreased. Normal shock waves were observed in the free jet at qualities above 0.25. Choking flow rates were predicted with an average error of less than 2% with a stagnation energy balance model using an empirically developed slip ratio relation corrected for entrainment.

    Notes: Trajectory approximations have been used to compute near-optimal control policies for a number of lumped-parameter systems. In this paper the technique is generalized to distributed-parameter systems. The essence of the method is the approximation of the state and adjoint variables of the problem by a linear combination of spatially dependent trial functions and time-dependent mixing coefficients. Application of the method of weighted residuals to the spatial variations reduces the problem to one involving a system of ordinary differential equations for the mixing coefficients.Results are presented of an application of the algorithm to the determination of nearoptimal control policies for a tubular plug-flow heat exchanger with uniform wall flux forcing. The results compare favorably with the optimal solutions and indicate that the method could be of considerable value in implementing optimal control for a wide class of systems.

    Notes: An approximate analytical method is developed to estimate the parameter sensitivity of the solution of a set of nonlinear ordinary differential equations describing a system which exhibits periodic behavior. An approximate solution is constructed in terms of both the approximate periodic solution determined from Galerkin equations and the envelope and phase of the oscillation away from such a periodic solution. Parameter sensitivity information is then obtained by examining the parameter variation effect on the approximate solution.Examples of two- and three-dimensional nonlinear systems illustrate this procedure and show that the effect of parameter change on the solution is predicted with sufficient accuracy to make this method useful for nonlinear analysis.
