    Notes: Crystallization kinetics of crystalline fractions of propylene oxide polymers made with different catalysts have been studied by isothermal dilatometric and microscopical measurements. Isothermal microscopical measurements indicate that spherulite growth in these polymers proceeds from predetermined nuclei. The half time for spherulitic appearance is less than, but of the same order as, the half time for complete crystallization. Only by taking this factor into account can the dilatometric data be represented by the Avrami equation. The deviation of the crystallization isotherm from that predicted from the microscopical data using the Avrami theory is attributed to a secondary crystallization process taking place within the spherulite. Crystallization continues long after spherulites completely occupy the available volume in the polymer. By assuming that the secondary crystallization proceeds as a first-order process in the uncrystallized, but crystallizable, portions of the melt, it is shown that the crystallization isotherms can be completely described in terms of four parameters. These are: (1) the time constant for the primary crystallization process; (2) the time constant for nucleation; (3) the time constant for the secondary crystallization process, and (4) the extent of secondary crystallization. The important conclusions of these studies are: the rates of nucleation and of spherulitic growth are far more dependent on temperature than on stereoregularity; the ratio of the rate of the secondary crystallization process to that of the primary crystallization process is almost independent of temperature, but increases with increasing stereoregularity of the polymer.

    Notes: The structure of polypropylene crystallized at pressures up to 5000 atm. has been studied. Upon slow cooling from the melt at 320 atm., the γ modification, previously found only in low molecular weight and stereoblock fractions, begins to appear in small amounts in addition to the normal α monoclinic form. As the pressure is increased further, a larger proportion of the sample crystallizes in the γ form until, at 5000 atm., only the γ modification is present. X-ray and DTA studies show that the γ form of polypropylene transforms to the normal α modification at a temperature only slightly below the γ melting point. Evidence is presented which favors the occurrence of a solid-state transition as a model of transformation to the α form. Results from isothermal crystallizations at low supercoolings and annealing experiments under high pressure show that the melting point of the γ modification of polypropylene is very sensitive to crystallite perfection.

    Notes: The vapor pressure osmometry method for determining the molecular weight of polyamides has been studied by use of the newly developed solvents. Polymers used were polycaprolactams, polyenanthamides, and polypelargonamides. The measurements were carried out with 2,2,3,3-tetrafluoro-1-propanol and 2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,7,7-dodecafluoro-1-heptanol as solvents at 50 and 130°C., respectively. Endgroup determinations on samples were also done in m-cresol by 0.1 N-hydrochloric acid. Reduced resistance differences (ΔR/C)0 obtained by vapor pressure osmometry at 50°C. were found to be in linear relation with the reciprocal of the number-average molecular weight determined by endgroup titrations; but anomalous results were obtained when dodecafluoroheptanol was used as the solvent at 130°C.

    Notes: The orientation behavior of stereoregular poly(vinyl alcohols) was investigated during stretching and after releasing the stress on the bulk polymers at relatively high humidity (80% R. H.) A structural model, differing from polyethylene, was proposed in which the crystallites were embedded in a considerably swollen amorphous matrix without any definite physical interaction so as to form an aggregation of crystallites, a superstructure. The crystal orientation followed, in principle, “the first borderline case” of Kratky, but with some difference from theory in orientation, while the noncrystalline orientation was represented by the freely jointed equivalent chain model of Kuhn and Grün with a value of N/γ as small as around 5. The difference between crystal orientation found and the theorietical orientation is discussed and some factors which prevented the crystal orientation are considered.

    Notes: Mechanical damping measurements were carried out in the range of 103-105 cps and between 60°K. and the softening point on some substituted Polystyrenes and poly(vinyl benzoates) containing different substituents (methyl groups, methoxy groups, and halogen atoms) either in the ring or in the main chain. The ortho and meta ring-substituted polystyrenes do not show any secondary mechanical relaxation in the glassy state, although all the other substituted polystyrenes, exhibit a low-temperature damping peak (δ process) (which is in some way connected with ring motions) whose height and temperature location depend on nature, position, and number of substituents. Substituents in the para position of the ring or in the α position in the backbone chain shift the δ peak of the unsubstituted polystyrene towards higher temperatures; this shift is accompanied by an increase of the apparent activation energy E*. Substitution in the β position, on the contrary, does not affect the δ peak. Analogous results are obtained for substituted poly(vinyl benzoates), which exhibit, in addition, a β relaxation effect, associated with carboxyl group motions. A very good correlation is found between the values of E* and the limiting relaxation time τ for the δ relaxation of polystyrenes and poly(vinyl benzoates), similarly substituted in the ring, indicating that the δ relaxation leads to absorption curves in the mechanical relaxation spectrum which are characteristic of the structure of the aromatic side chain.

    Notes: Dynamic viscoelastic properties of 10 and 20% aqueous solutions of sodium polyacrylate were studied by the electromagnetic transducer method at 500 cps in the temperature range of 0-50°C. These solutions distinctly showed a relaxation phenomenon in this temperature range which was also affected by addition of such compounds as sodium chloride, urea, and dioxane. An anomalous behavior that cannot be explained as due to the relaxation phenomenon was observed on the addition of small amounts of these agents. One of the causes of this behavior is ascribed to the ion association in the solution. The static viscosity of the solution was also measured by using a rotating cylinder viscometer and the results compared with the dynamic data.

    Notes: The glass transitions of an ionic polymer in bulk have been studied as a function of the counterion for various homo- and copolymers. It is shown that the glass transition temperature can vary by as much as 530°C., from -10°C. for the nonionic material to +520 for Ca2+ or Zn2+ substituted polymer. From simple electrostatic considerations, it is shown that a linear correlation should exist beween the glass transition and the ratio of the cation charge, q, to the internuclear distance, a, between cation and chain anion; for this particular material (the polyphosphate chain) the relation is Tg = 625(q/a) -12 where q is in units of one electron and a is in A. If the data are interpreted in the light of the Gibbs-DiMarzio theory, it is seen that both the chain stiffness and the intermolecular energy increase in an approximately parallel manner as q/a increases.

    Notes: The configurational entropy of the polyethylene chain at the melting points calculated in two ways. In both calculations, tetrahedral angles and discrete trans and gauche arrangements of all bonds are assumed, and trans bonds are assumed more stable than gauche by energy U1. First, calculations are made on chains of up to N = 18 bonds, disallowing all configurations having overlapping atoms, and the result is extrapolated to large N. Second, a calculation is made directly for long chains, with overlaps excluded only over every short chain segment. The results are in almost exact agreement, suggesting that the second method can be safely used with other molecules. The calculated configurational entropy is in line with that suggested by the entropy of fusion, assuming the chains to acquire a configurational freedom in the melt which approaches that of independent chains.

    Notes: The angular distribution function P(θ) for intensity of light scattered by a dilute solution of comblike branched molecules has been determined for three situations of some interest for evaluation of experimental data: (1) the molecules are identical with branches of equal length attached equidistantly along linear backbone chains; (2) the molecules are homogeneous in mass, with the same number of branches on each molecule, but the branches are distributed at random along the chain; (3) branches and main chains are still uniform, but the molecules are heterogeneous in mass with the number of branches per molecule distributed according to the binomial distribution and the branches in any molecule spaced randomly along the backbone. Examination of numerical results shows that the scattering functions for models (1) and (2) are not very different. The function for case (3) is somewhat different from the others when the mean number of branches per molecule is small but they contain a large fraction of the mass of the molecule. Over a limited range of the pertinent variables (corresponding roughly to observations on typical vinyl polymers of molecular weights up to 106) all three functions agree quite well with P(θ) for homogeneous linear chains with the same mean-square radius of gyration.

    Notes: A light-scattering study is presented of two isotactic polypropylene samples with broad molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn = 8.1 and 8.7, respectively) dissolved in α-chloronaphthalene at 147°C. Incident radiation of 5460, 4358, and 3650 A. was used. The reciprocal intramolecular scattering function, P-1(u) is expressed as a function of the variable [sin(θ/2)/λ′]2. This provides a wider range of experimental values of the variable u = 16π2(b2/6) [sin(θ/2)/λ′]2 than is accessible by the usual technique of using only one wavelength. The shape of the function P-1(u) is closer to that predicted theoretically if the weight distribution function f(N) in the equation \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ P(u) = \int_0^\infty {Nf(N)P_N (u)dN} /\int_0^\infty {Nf(N)dN} $\end{document} is given by the log-normal distribution rather than the distribution function of Schulz and Zimm. The method is applicable to polymer samples for which the average molecular weights are too low to be measured by the light-scattering method of Benoit and Loucheux.

    Notes: Hair follicles are initiated in mice homozygous for Strong's luxoid gene at the normal times. The dermis from 16 days of gestation to nine days after birth lags in development. The adipose layer instead of enlarging at the normal time of three days after birth delays until nine days. The growth of the first cycle hairs is inhibited, particularly on dorsal surfaces. Some follicles of all types degenerate. The surviving follicles enter telogen at seven days after birth, after forming only short unpigmented or poorly-pigmented hairs. Many follicles immediately begin a second cycle of growth, in which more normal hairs develop and a substantial adipose layer forms. No alopecia develops on ventral surfaces, but growth of the first cycle ceases and the second cycle commences earlier than normal; the hairs formed are abnormal. Abnormal hair growth in Strong's luxoid homozygotes may be a result of the retarded growth of the dermis or both defects may be secondary to a more fundamental defect.

    Notes: Gross and histological examination of lizard oviducts was made in 11 species of the family Iguanidae, and in one species of each of the families Gekkonidae and Eublepharidae. Lizard oviducts are bound dorsally by a mesentery which is continuous with the peritoneum, and ventrally by a smooth muscle band which extends from the posterior segment of the vagina to the base of the infundibular ostium. The musculature of the vagina consists of an inner circular smooth muscle layer which is thickened posteriorly, and an outer longitudinal layer which is arranged into longitudinal folds at about the utero-vaginal transition. In iguanid lizards the vaginal mucosa is arranged into longitudinal folds that extend the entire length of the vagina. Posteriorly, the folds are high and reduced in number. Anteriorly, they decrease gradually in height and become more numerous. In Phyllodactylus homolepidurus fold height and number remain essentially constant through the vagina. Seminal receptacles in the iguanids occur principally in the anterior segment of the vagina. Receptacles in P. homolepidurus (Gekkonidae) and Coleonyx variegatus (Eublepharidae) appear to be confined to the tube between the uterus and the infundibulum. Most receptacles are located adjacent to the oviducal mesentery and to the smooth muscle band.

    Notes: 1Neurosecretary cells in the central nervous system of the adult blowfly, Phormia regina Meig., have been examined histologically using the parparaldehyde-fuchsin and Gomori's staining method. Six groups of the neurosecretory cells occur in each hemisphere of the brain, the medial, frontal, lateral A, lateral B, posterior I and posterior II groups. In the subesophageal ganglion, four B-cells and two A-cells are present. In the thoracico-abdominal ganglion, ten A-cells are found in the thoracic region and a total of about 50 A- and B-cells in the hind part of the abdominal region.2A comparison with the neurosecretory system of two other species of blowfly, Calliphora erythrocephala Meig., Sarcophaga bullata Parker, and the housefly, Musca domestica L., showed similar arrangements and grouping.3Neurosecretory granules have been observed along the axons originating from the medial neurosecretory cells of the brain, and the thoracico-abdominal ganglion. The granules originating from the medial groups can be traced directly to the corpus cardiacum from which they move to the aorta, crop duct and cardia through axons.4There is with advancing age a gradual increase in the size of cell bodies and nuclei of the median neurosecretory cells in both females and males of Phormia regina, and also a decrease in stainable granules. This increase in size is dependent on nutrition, with no increase in water alone, a slight increase on sugar, and a maximum increase on sugar and liver. Corresponding increases in size occur in the ovaries in connection with feeding the same substances.

    Notes: The structure of the external ears and the ultrasonic cries produced by one member of the single family of Megachiroptera and six representatives of the Vespertilionoidea of the Microchiroptera have been described. All the specimens were intra-vitally fixed and the preparations have been examined, photographed and measured. Brief notes are given on the middle ear and the following measurements have been made on the cochlea: the general size of the cochlea in various dimensions, the width and thickness of the basilar membrane, the size of the spiral ligament and the height of the cells of Claudius. In conclusion it can be said that there are marked differences in the structure of the cochleae of the two suborders, as well as within the superfamily Vespertilionoidea.

    Notes: The chemoreceptors of Limulus polyphemus (L.) are polyneuronal sensilla found in the spines of the coxal gnathobases of each walking leg, the spines of the chilarial appendages, and the chelae of all the limbs. Each sensillum contains 6-15 bipolar sensory cells that share a single pore in the cuticle. The dendrites of the sensory cells of each sensillum course to the cuticle together. These attenuate sharply and enter a canal in the cuticle as a very narrow terminal thread. The dendrites retain their identity in the thread, but with the light microscope, they are usually not visible individually. Each thread, consisting of 6-15 dendrites, is accompanied to the cuticular surface by a cuticular tubule found within the canal. The chemoreceptor sensilla of the gnathobase, chilarium, and chela, the temperature organs of Patten, and the flabellar receptor organs all have the same basic organization. In general this is the same structural plan shown by chemoreceptors of other arthropods. Several different mechanisms of peripheral physiological interaction among receptor cells are possible with a sensillum organization like that described here for Limulus.

    Notes: The hemolymph of the horseshoe crab, Limulus (Xiphosura) polyphemus, contains a single cell type. The hemocytes are ovoid and contain many refractile granules. One-half to one minute after the onset of clotting the hemocytes swell and a hyaline cytoplasmic ring, essentially devoid of granules, appears about their circumference. During this time the granules disperse and the nucleus becomes visible. Three to five minutes following the initiation of clotting, the cell extends long pseudopodial processes. Phase contrast time-lapse cinematography reveals that the cells are extremely motile during this phase. Concomitant with these changes, many of the granules lose their refractility and one by one disappear from the cytoplasm leaving what appears to be a vacuole.Electron micrographs of native (un-clotted) hemocytes and of clots fixed in glutaraldehyde and post-fixed in osmium reveal that the membrane-bounded granules of native cells are very dense and homogeneous with no evidence of an internal structure. One-half to one minute after clotting, however, they become less dense and 250 Å microtubules spaced at ca. 500 Å intervals appear parallel to the long axis of the granule. Further degradation of the granule ensues and involves (a) change to a spherical shape, and (b) further decrease in density and better resolution of the microtubules. The microtubular component subsequently disintegrates leaving a membrane-bounded granule containing particulate material. Finally, the membrane of the granule fuses with the plasma membrane and the components of the granule are dispersed in the plasma where they presumably contribute to the formation of the gelatinous clot.

    Notes: Classical studies of the nervous system of the leech revealed that there were specific types of very large glial cells associated with various parts of the neuron. Recent microelectrode studies demonstrated that there was a low resistance to the flow charge from any one of these large glial cells to another. The present study describes a previously unreported type of glial cell, the glial cell of the fascicles. These cells, which resemble the glial cells of the connectives but are smaller, are found in the fascicles of axons that unite the connectives to the neuropil. Thus, these cells are located between the glial cells of the connectives on the one hand and the glial cells of the neuropil and packets on the other and must be taken into account in considerations of the low resistance to the transfer of charge from one glial cell to another.

    Notes: The nucleoli of cells of the adult mouse were examined by staining with toluidine blue after removal of deoxyribonucleic acid from tissue sections by deoxyribonuclease treatment.The nuclei of each cell type examined contained one or more nucleoli. This was observed even in lymphocytes and neuroglia, although these cells have occasionally been described as anucleolated. In mature spermatids and spermatozoa, however, it was not possible to detect a nucleolus.The distribution of the number of nucleoli in many diploid cells exhibited a mode of two or three nucleoli per nucleus, and a range from 1 to 6 nucleoli.In presumedly diploid hepatic nuclei, the maximum number of nucleoli was six; but in presumedly tetraploid hepatic nuclei, it was 11. Thus, nearly twice as many nucleoli are present when the chromosome number is doubled. In view of this observation, it is suggested that six nucleolar organizers are present in the diploid chromosomal complement of the mouse. However, through failure of some nucleolar organizers or more probably through fusion of nucleoli, the number of these organelles in most nuclei is less than six.

    Notes: The epidermal setae and the spinules of the digital lamellae of anoline and gekkonid lizards are shed periodically along with the rest of the outer layer of the skin. These structures are developed within the lamellae prior to ecdysis. The setae are larger and more complicated than the spinules and begin their development first. The setae of Anolis start as aggregations of tonofibrils beneath the plasma membrane of the presumptive Oberhautchen cells. These cells are arranged in rows parallel to the surface, several cell layers beneath the alpha layer of the skin. The developing setae protrude into the clear layer cells as finger-like projections, with the tonofibrils longitudinally oriented in the direction of growth. About 100 setae are formed by each Oberhautchen cells in Anolis. In late development, the clear layer cells lose their cellular contents and when shed along with all distal cells, retain a template of the new setae or spinules. The spinules and setae are formed before the fibrous and alpha layers of the new skin. The fibrous layer, which occurs only on the ventral (outer) layer of the lamellae, and the Oberhautchen with its setae and spinules, is considered the beta layer. The alpha layer, which occurs adjacent to the fibrous layer on the ventral surface and adjacent to the Oberhautchen on the dorsal (inner) surface, is morphologically identical to that of mammalian α keratin. The shed lizard skin consists of the alpha and beta layers as well as the degenerating cells of the outer epidermal generation, and the clear layer. The clear layer that is shed shows the template of the new setae and spinules developed in the new skin layer. The separation of the new from the old skin occurs along the intercellular space between the clear layer cells and the new Oberhautchen. The alpha layer of the skin is not fully keratinized at shedding. The setae of the digital lamellae of lizards represent unique epidermal structures  -  intracellular keratinized microstructures.

    Notes: The view is commonly held that the exclusive source of axonal substance is the neuronal cell body. The results of the present study, employing techniques of light and electron microscope autoradiography, indicate that substances of metabolic importance may reach the axon from intercellular fluids by way of the Schwann and myelin sheath. Tritiated l-histidine was injected intraperitoneally into the newt, Triturus viridescens, and the label was found in the Schwann cell body, myelin,We use the terms myelin and myelin sheath synonymously, as generally employed in modern anatomical literature, for the array of packed Schwann cell wrappings around the axon of the peripheral nerve fiber. In biochemical literature the term myelin is used rather loosely sometimes to imply the chemical substratum of the myelin sheath or its lipoidal fraction. and axoplasm. Nerve separated by transection from its neuronal cell bodies was labeled about as densely as intact nerve. Moreover, pieces of nerve immersed in the isotope also incorporated the labeled molecule. These results have led us to reassess traditional views of the function of the sheaths surrounding the axon.

    Notes: A morphological and histochemical investigation was conducted on the pronephros and mesonephros of the mouse embryo from 8.5 through 16.5 days. The pronephros appeared between days 8.5 and 9.5 as a thickening of the somatic layer of the intermediate cell mass. It consisted of three small clusters of cells on either side of the midline dorsally between the somite and the coelom, at the level of somites 8 and 9. The mesonephros arose during day 9 and persisted until day 16. In the male the anterior three tubules were incorporated into the testis at 15.5-16.5 days. The mesonephros consisted of approximately 11 tubules located between somites 10-17. The tubules possessed lumina and connected with the Wolffian duct. Indications of internal and external glomeruli were noted on day 11. The Wolffian duct reached the cloaca at ten days.Strong alkaline phosphatase activity was noted in the differentiating tubules. Cytoplasmic and luminal enzyme activity was observed between 9.3 and 12.5 days indicating possible function at this time. Acid phosphatase was demonstrable in the tubules and duct only on day 11. Ribonucleic acid was observed in the nuclei and cytoplasm of the mesodermal cells as they differentiated into tubules and duct. A decrease in RNA was noted after differentiation was complete. Periodic acid-Schiff material (diastase-stable) was localized in the basement membrane of the tubule and duct cells. A faint positive reaction was also found at the luminal border of the tubules. The strongest reaction was noted in the luminal border at 11.5-12.5 days. Those tubules being incorporated into the genital system in the male were also PAS positive. Morphological and histochemical evidence suggested that the mouse mesonephros, though quasi vestigial, may function for a short time.

    Notes: Neural crest and dorsal neural tube of cervical and thoracolumbar levels were removed from embryos of Chelydra serpentina at stages ranging from 8 to 18 somites. Extirpation extended from the levels of the last four somites posteriorly around the neurenteric canal. Deficiencies in sensory and sympathetic ganglia occurred. Motor roots of the associated spinal nerves differentiated. In the absence of postganglionic neurons, the preganglionic fibers form a neuron-free plexus in the thoracolumbar region. Some observations in the cervical region indicate that the postganglionic neurons depend on preganglionic fibers for their differentiation. The cortex of the adrenal gland formed without related medulla in appropriate experiments.The normal morphology of the sympathetic trunks is illustrated. Superficial and deep cervical sympathetic trunks are described. The latter ascends the neck in a paravertebral position. Along its course are segmental ganglia and rami communicantes; it terminates by joining the medial branch of the superficial sympathetic trunk rostral to the ninth cranial nerve.

    Notes: The fine structure of the tunic of a typical ascidian was investigated because of the cellulose-like polysaccharide known to occur in its substance. The glycoprotein mantle does contain filaments very much like plant cellulose in morphology. Tunicin filaments are 35-50 Å in diameter, often beaded, and of indeterminate length. Histochemical evidence that they are composed of cellulose is given here and past chemical and physical studies on the unusual ascidian polysaccharide are reviewed. Moreover, we present here for the first time direct autoradiographic evidence that epidermal cells are involved in the synthesis and secretion of tunicin. Tritiated glucose is immediately incorporated into the Golgi zone of epidermal cells and labeled product appears in the tunic at later intervals. The fine structure of the epidermal cell is described in detail. Unlike the rather moribund appearing vanadocyte that wanders through the tunic, the epidermal cell has well-developed cytoplasmic organelles and a large vesicular nucleus. The granular endoplasmic reticulum is abundant and the Golgi complex is highly developed. It seems likely that the lamellae and vesicles of the Golgi complex are involved in the production of the tunic sugar and that tunic proteins of as yet unknown nature are produced by the ergastoplasm. Further investigation of the ascidian mantle should be of interest because of the possibility that cellulose is a more general component of glycoprotein surface coats in animals than has heretofore been recognized.

    Notes: The effects of low temperature on embryonic induction were investigated. Presumptive epidermis cells of Rana pipiens were either pretreated with cold (4°C) and then treated with lithium chloride at the same temperature, or activated by lithium chloride at 22°C, then rapidly chilled to 4° and kept at this temperature for a period of time. Cultures were made from the treated cells.It was found that induction at low temperature could occur, although it did not proceed beyond determining neuralization. When, on the other hand, the cells were first induced with LiCl to the point at which they should have been determined to differentiate into melanophores, but were then rapidly chilled and kept in the cold for some time, the effects of induction were suppressed and the cells differentiated into ciliated epithelium. A 15-60 minute lag in time between induction and chilling (during which the cells were kept in the culture medium at room temperature) allowed neural induction to be gradually “fixed,” and a 120-180 minute lag was sufficient for melanphore induction to become insensitive to the subsequent treatment with cold.It is speculated from these results that induction occurs very slowly at low temperature and that the inductive stimulus activates a sequence of reactions, one or several of which are strongly repressed by the cold. In this case, when no products result from these reactions, the sequence is assumed to stop and possible feed-back mechanisms switch the whole system to its initial condition.

    Notes: The most intense and widely distributed sudanophilic responses of cryostat-sectioned newt limb tissues were obtained with a simultaneous fix and stain procedure of 1:1 10% formal-calcium and sudan black B. Droplets and globules of lipid mixtures and rodlets (mitochondria) were typical responses distributed within the epidermis, subcutaneous glands, dermis and other connective tissues, striated muscle (also with positive fibrils), tunics of blood vessels, and blood cells. A prominent droplet response was located subjacent to the adepidermal basement membrane. The myelin of brachial nerve stained intensely.In regenerating limbs, the wound epithelium response was comparable to that of epidermis. Post-amputational lipophanerosis of injured muscle and brachial nerves was observed. The retrograde degeneration of nerve myelin was extensive, and continued into the early differentiative phase of regeneration. Lipid-engorged macrophages were prominent among the injured tissues, distal to these, and within the wound epithelium.The regeneration blastema revealed a large quantity of sudanophilic lipid. Prominent droplet and rodlet responses were typical of the myelinating regenerating nerves. The response of regenerating muscle equaled that of the mature stump fibers. The cells of the regenerating chondroskeleton contained sudanophilic lipid.Organic solvents such as acetone, ether, chloroform and chloroform:methanol reduced or prevented the sudanophilic responses. Sudan red 7B revealed less lipid than did sudan black B. A fixation effect was demonstrated with post-chromated formalcalcium, and chromic-formalin fixed sections. In the latter preparations, swollen-bodies, identified as mitochondria, stained intensely.

    Notes: Alpha and beta cells can be distinguished by differences in mitochondrial and secretion granule structure. Many mitochondria of alpha cells possess “tubular” or prismatic cristae oriented longitudinally and having triangular profiles in cross-section. The matrix is particulate, with the roughly spherical particles measuring about 100 A in diameter. Evidence is presented indicating that alpha and beta granules are sequestrated in association with Golgi elements. Fully-condensed beta granules, assumed to be insulin, appear homogeneously dense and crystalline. Recurrent profiles of crystalline beta granules suggest that they possess an octahedral configuration. Alpha cell granules also appear homogeneously dense but have round profiles.Many acinar cell nuclei in both normal and alloxan-treated pancreata display masses of moderately dense fibrils oriented roughly parallel to each other. These fibrils are about 200 A across and their terminal portions are rebranched and often appear to be continuous with the finely granular or filamentous component of the nucleoplasm. Not infrequently the fibrils show evidence of periodicity.Alloxan has a specific destructive effect on beta cells. An initial effect seems to be the disruption and coalescence of the bounding membranes of beta granules. Lysosome-like bodies are often seen in beta cell cytoplasm, which ultimately becomes degranulated and necrotic following prolonged administration of large doses of alloxan.

    Notes: The vessels of the forelimb stump and regenerate were perfused with Prussian blue and studied as whole mounts and in histological sections to reveal the condition and disposition of the blood vessels in various stages of forelimb regeneration in the adult newt, Triturus viridescens. The development of the vessels in the regenerate seemed to be comparable in all its essential features to that which has been described for the normal developing limb in urodele, chick and pig embryos.The first signs of regeneration of the vessels are seen during wound healing when fine sprouts appear from the old vessels near the amputation wound. These grow and anastomose, but are limited to the transition region between old and new tissues and avoid the growing blastema during the early stages of regeneration. As the regenerate enlarges into a conical structure vessels invade the proximal part of the growth and avoid the distal regions. It is only during the stages of histogenesis and morphogenesis that vessels grow into more distal regions. The regions of most active enlargement of the early or later regenerate are those most poorly vascularized. These results are discussed against the background of the activity of certain enzymes during regeneration. In the advanced regenerate, preferential channels are consolidated until in the palette and digital stages the pattern of the blood vessels resembles that of the normal limb.

    Notes: The anatomy of the femoral glands in an iguanid lizard, Crotaphytus collaris collaris (Say), is described. The 48 lizards (including three embryos) from which glands were examined were obtained throughout their season of activity at one locality in Kansas.In animals of both sexes the glands lie in a linear series on the ventral aspect of each thigh. They are composed of branching tubes and tubules of epidermal and dermal origin. The row of femoral pores is the only external manifestation of the glands.Post hatching, the glands of males increase in size and complexity; little onto-genetic change occurs in the glands of females.The relative length of the glands appears to vary seasonally in adult males suggesting variation in their activity. The greatest relative sizes occur in the breeding season.At times a stratum corneum, continuous with the stratum corneum of the skin, occurs in the duct of the gland internal to part of the secretion plug. Formation of the stratum corneum seems to be initiated in the autumn prior to hibernation, and the stratum corneum removes the outer part of the secretion plug in the next ecdysis; meanwhile, production of a new secretion plug is initiated.The anatomy of the femoral glands in Crotaphytus is similar to that of the described glands of other species of lizards.

    Notes: Hatching eggs from inbred lines of chickens (inbreeding coefficient exceeds 95%) which show various degrees of resistance and susceptibility to Rous sarcoma, were used for experimentation. Adult tissues were grafted onto the chorioallantois on the tenth day of incubation and tissues of host and control embryos were harvested on the twentieth day of incubation. Enzymes were localized in tissues by histochemical procedures.Small pieces of tissue (thymus or bursa), when grafted onto the chorioallantois, increased the size of the spleen in host embryos although splenomegaly did not invariably occur. Two types of reactions were observed in the spleen, i.e., enlarged spleens with cysts or enlarged spleens which from a morphological point of view were normal. Grafts of either thymus or bursa decreased the size of the host embryo's bursa or were without effect. When weight of the bursa of host embryos was significantly less than that of control embryos on the twentieth day of incubation, this size relationship persisted in chicks four weeks post hatching.Intensity of dehydrogenase and acid phosphatase reactions in cysts of enlarged spleens and in the multinucleated giant cells investing them suggests that they consist of groups of degenerating cells. Intensity of enzyme reaction indicates that enlarged spleens of host embryos in which cysts were absent were normal. Enzyme reactions in the bursae of experimental embryos were more intense than those identified in the same tissues of control embryos. Catabolic reactions were the predominant type in grafts ten days subsequent to implantation. Grafts increased the number of erythrocytes in the peripheral blood of host embryos.

Salient points of similarity between myocytes and smooth muscles were their long, fusiform shape, their red color after staining with Mallory's triple stain, and the presence of filaments running longitudinally in the cytoplasm.Microciona myocytes have thick filaments of 150-250 Å diameter and thin filament of 50-70 Å diameter, and in transverse sections the thin filaments occasionally appear as a ring of dots around a thick filament. Longitudinal sections of Tedania myocytes show only one type of filament, which varies from 100 Å to 200-300 Å diameter in thick regions of the filament. Although transverse sections show light material around the dense filaments, a distinct pattern of thick and thin filaments is not seen in Tedania.Due to infrequent contacts between cells, the large extra-cellular space observed with the electron microscope (49% in Tedania, 57% in Microciona), and the absence of nerves, each myocyte probably acts as an independent contractile unit.

    Notes: Subnormal growth in length and diameter of the duodenum is encountered both in chick embryos injected with thiourea at 11 days of incubation, and in embryos injected with cortisone acetate at 14 days of incubation. Morphogenesis of previllous ridges and villi is retarded in thiourea-treated embryos. Morphogenesis of previllous ridges and villi in cortisone acetate-treated embryos at first seems to be slightly accelerated over that of controls, but the acceleration does not appear to be maintained, and the hormone may actually be inhibitory to normal morphogenesis of villi by 19 days of incubation. The results indicate that normal levels of endogenous thyroxine are necessary for normal growth in length and diameter of the duodenum and for normal morphogenesis of previllous ridges and villi. The possibility that adrenocorticoids may also play a role in the normal development of these parameters is indicated, although the evidence is inconclusive.

    Notes: A survey of the comparative morphology and histology of the twelve glands in the ophidian head was made. The nasal and Harderian glands are the only non-oral glands. The premaxillary, supralabial, posterior, Duvernoy's and venom glands are serially homologous. The infralabial, sublingual and supralingual glands are not related to the other oral glands. The relationships of the temporomandibular and anterior temporal glands to the other oral glands could not be determined.For each gland a synonymy of previously used names, its approximate location within the head and its distribution within the various groups of the Ophidia is given. The general histological picture of most of the glands is illustrated and available information on their embryology and innervation is summarized.

    Notes: The dynamic mechanical properties of poly-4-methylpentene-1 have been measured in torsion in the temperature range from 25 to 160°C. at frequencies from 10-3 to 10 cps. Two transitions are found. The first, with a peak at 40°C. at 1 cps, appears as a normal glass transition. A broad high temperature peak appears at 130°C. The dynamic compliance-frequency data can be superposed by the conventional method of reduced variables for temperatures up to 100°C. The temperature dependence of the shift factors follows the WLF equation. Above this temperature, superposition can be achieved by applying horizontal and vertical shifts to both components of the dynamic compliance. When the vertical shift is permitted, the range of applicability of the WLF equation is extended to 160°C.

    Notes: Two sets of dynamic mechanical property data and some stress relaxation data for semicrystalline, linear polyethylene are treated by data reduction methods previously described. These data can be represented by a master plot of reduced modulus versus reduced frequency and two sets of temperature-dependent shift factors. The first of these factors reflects the change of viscoelastic relaxation times with temperature. The second represents a separable change of modulus with temperature which applies over the entire time or frequency range of the experiments. This change is larger and in the opposite direction to that found applicable in the behavior of noncrystalline plastics and rubbers. The two sets of dynamic data show the same frequency-temperature dependence which can be represented by an activation energy of 22 kcal./mole. Small differences in the modulus-temperature dependence are attributed to differences in molecular weight or annealing conditions. The stress relaxation data superposes to a curve in good agreement with the dynamic data but with a factor of 20 difference in time scale. This difference is attributed to the finite strains used in the stress relaxation measurements. Such strains might be expected to increase free volume in simple extension deformations and so accelerate the relaxation.

    Notes: NMR measurements on undrawn polyethylene (PE) samples in contact with a solvent such as C2Cl4 indicate an increase in the mobility of the mobile chain segments as compared to dry samples. Highly drawn PE shows no such effect. This is because Sa, the sorption per unit mass of noncrystalline material present, decreases from 20.9 wt.-% (dry basis), found for undrawn quenched PE, to 0.63 wt.-% after drawing (Sa determined at 25°C. and 0.80 vapor activity). Drawing also reduces the segment mobility according to the NMR spectrum. It is shown that these effects are caused by considerable structural changes occurring in the noncrystalline regions of PE upon drawing. Annealing of drawn PE samples at successively higher temperatures leads to a gradual relaxation of the noncrystalline regions towards the state characteristic of undrawn PE. With increasing annealing temperature Sa as well as the mobility approach values found with undrawn PE.

    Notes: When an uncompounded elastomer is processed on a two-roll mill, four different regions of mechanical behavior are observed, depending upon the temperature and the severity of the nip deformation. this behavior is observed on materials with a wide variety in chemical composition, through the severity varies. The flow at high temperatures is typical of melt or polymer solution behavior. At lower temperatures unstable flow and elastic solidike regions are observed. By presuming the elastomer to be an isotropicviscoelastic medium, the stress and velocity fields were computed in the polymer melt region. The unstable regime was found to correspond to a critical value of the ratio of viscoelastic to viscous forces. The mathematical analysis, done interms of the Green-Rivlin-Noll theory of viscoelastic media, extends earlier studies of deformation in this geometry by Gaskell and Bergen.

    Notes: A method of data interpretation known as nonlinear least squares has recently been applied by several authors to the study of polymeric materials. Nagler has used a modified method proposed by Blizzard and Jirka and has concluded that the method is impractical because it requires excessive computer time. It is shown that the difficulties Nagler encountered are inherent in Blizzard and Jirka's method, but not in the basic method. Three steps are outlined to minimize computer time, and a summary of successful applications is presented.

    Notes: The thermal stability and trace volatiles content of polymers can be determined rapidly and conveniently by using a hot-filament pyrolyzer for heating the sample. The filament unit, of a type employed for pyrolysis-GLC analysis, consists of a platinum coil with an attached platinum/platinum-rhodium thermocouple for measuring the sample temperature. As the sample is heated the volatile products are monitored directly with a flame ionization detector, a dual recorder being used to chart both temperature and volatiles yield. At any stage of heating the products are analyzed, if desired, with a suitable GLC column. Thermal stability measurements of several polymers were generally consistent with results by conventional thermogravimetric analysis. Advantages of the method are high sensitivity for detection of low decomposition rates, speed of the temperature adjustment, simplicity of the apparatus, and small sample requirement.

    Notes: The molecular orientation of stretched polyethylene has been estimated separately for the crystalline and amorphous phases by using x-ray and birefringence techniques. It is confirmed that if a hightly crosslinked polyethylene is highly stretched rapidly in the perfectly molten state and cooled to room temperature, a fibrous structure comprised of highly oriented crystallites and almost unoriented relaxed amorphous chains is produced. Some properties such as dynamic mechanical properties and thermodynamic property are discussed in relation to the molecular structure.

    Notes: Equilibrium pressure-volume-temperature behavior in both the solid and molten regions was determine for nylon 610. Data were measured with a compressibility device capable of obtaining precise and accurate data. Residual curve treatment showed that the data were true equilibrium data. A volume extrapolated to 2419 atm. at room temperature from the present data compared favorably to the sole literature value reported by Bridgman. The data of this work showed the existence of what appears to be a second-order transition point for nylon 610. This point ranged from 140°C. at 232 atm. to about 170°C. at 1855 atm. The Spencer-Gilmore equation was fitted to the data of this study.

    Notes: Castings having unexpectedly high heat-distortion temperatures result when certain treated resins of the EPON EPON is a registered trademark of the Shell Oil Company. 828 type and about 75% of the stoichiometric amount of m-phenylenediamine, are postcured for 10-20 hr. at 175-200°C. The improvement in heat-distortion temperature is about 100°C., to values as high as 250°C. A recrystallized resin has given the highest values. Other glycidyl ethers of polyphenols have shown this phenomenon to a lesser degree, but other amine curing agents, including isomers and substitution products of m-phenylenediamine, have not. Some evidence of a new curing reaction has been developed, by NMR and pyrolysis studies of model compounds, which supports the postulate that the m-phenylenediamine is alkylated with a fifth epoxy group during the postcure, presumably at a ring carbon, resulting in greater crosslinking.

    Notes: The viscoelastic properties of some polyester-urethanes are compared with the properties of other polymers. The behavior observed is anomalous in that these polyurethanes exhibit an unusually high value of modulus well above their Tg, unaccounted for by either crosslinking or crystallinity. Various experiments including incorporation of plasticizes of widely varying chemical composition have suggested interpretation of the system as a block copolymer, each block having its own Tg. Each of the two types of blocks seems to associate with similar blocks from other molecules.

    Notes: The gelation of vinyl plastisols at constant temperature has been found to follow the equation ln [(C - Ce)/(U - Ce)] = (- π2/a2)Dτ + ln (8/π2), where C is the resin phase concentration, Ce the equilibrium resin phase concentration, U the critical resin phase concentration, a the average particle size, D the diffusion constant, and τ the time required for the onsent of gelation. A light reflectance apparatus capable of measuring the gelation process is described. The effect that various resin-plasticizer parameters have on the gelation and fusion process is discussed. The light-reflectance apparatus is also useful for estimating various resin and formulating parameters.

    Notes: Relaxation times of polyethylene melts have been measured by Aloisio, Matsuoka, and Maxwell. One implication regarding their observations is that the elastic properties of polymer melts must be time-dependent. In particular, the steady-flow shear modulus depends on the strain rate. Some interpretations of data in the literature have been based on concepts in rubber elasticity where the steady-flow modulus is an equilibrium value, independent of strain rate. We have used Pao's theory for viscoelastic flow together with measurements of relaxation times to discuss the strain rate dependence of the steady-flow shear modulus of melts. The existence of a strain rate-dependent shear modulus leads naturally to a nonlinear relation between shear stress and recoverable shear strain. The conclusions regarding the molecular weight dependence of the modulus also differ from interpretations based on rubber elasticity.

    Notes: By the use of simple models of filled plastics, approximate equations are derived for the elongation to break in the case of perfect adhesion between the phases and for the tensile strength in the case of no adhesion between the polymer and filler phases. By combining these equations with equations for the modulus (assuming Hookean behavior) all the stress-strain properties can be derived, including rough estimates of the impact strength, as a function of filler concentration. Among other things, the theory predicts a very rapid decrease in elongation to break as filler concentration increases, especially for the case of good adhesion. It is also predicted for the case of good adhesion that the tensile strength of a filled polymer can be greater than that of an unfilled polymer.

    Notes: Polyethylene and polypropylene films were irradiated by γ-irradiation from a Co60 source in butadiene gas flow and in liquid butaidne. Irradiating in the butadiene gas flow is particularly convenient because the gas state monomer is available directly and little homopolymer is produced. In this case, there is a retardative effect on the grafting near the surface of the film and the grafting rate shows the maximum values at 50-60°C. for high-density PE (PEH) and PP. Irradiating in the liquid butadiene decreases the retardative effect near the surface. The effect of dose rate I on the grafting rate Rp is represented by Rp ∞ I1/4 in this case. The grafting rate is always higher in PEH than in low-density PE (PEL). Results of x-ray diffractometry and electron microscopy indicate that the grafting reaction occurs predominantly near the surface of the crystallite (lamella) of PE and the grafting rate is not affected by the overall crystallinity of the trunk polymer but by the configurational structure, such as the degree of branching or side-chain length.

    Notes: The effect of solubilization of latex polymers was investigated in various anionic surfactant solutions. The process of solubilization was studied by measuring the increase in light transmission and viscosity of the latexes. It was found that anionic surfactants differ widely in their ability to solubilize a given polymer, and susceptibility to solubilization is significantly affected by comonomer content of the polymer. If, for example, a poly(vinyl acetate) latex is stabilized exclusivdly by a strongly solubilizing sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate, it is less stable and hydrolyzes faster than a similar latex made with a polyoxyethylene derivative, which has only a slight solubilizing action. Dibutyl mateate copolymers of vinyl acetate are less susceptible to solubilization than hompolymers of vinyl acetate.

    Notes: Thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis have been employed to study the thermal degradation patterns of poly-m-aminostyrenes and poly-m-acetamidostyrenes of different molecular weights and also the corresponding 2:1 copolymers with styrene. The thermal degradation routes have also been compared and contrasted with that of polystyrene. Experiments have been carried out in static air and dynamic nitrogen, and the different behavior exhibited by these polymers has been reconciled in terms of their differing structures and different mechanisms for pyrolytic degradation.

    Notes: The fracture toughness of epoxy used in the bulk and adhesive form was measured by a previously developed technique. The uniform double cantilever-beam specimen, which was described earlier, was modified to a tapered beam, which simplified the experimental procedure and calculations for obtaining toughness measurements. by varying the ratio of hardener to resin and post-cure temperature on a single epoxy system (DER 332-TEPA), it was found that the toughness of the epoxy used in either bulk or bond form varied by a factor of approximately five. A particular combination of composition and post-curing temperature generally yielded higher toughness in the bulk than in the bond form. This was not always the case, however. At high post-cure temperatures, where the bonds were very tough, their toughness exceeded that of the bulk material. Hence, it does not appear possible to predict joint toughness from bulk toughness measurements. The toughness of joints was found to be a single-valued function of tensile modulus. For the bulk material, on the other hand, the toughness obtained on the epoxy having a specific modulus depended on the combination of composition and post-cure temperature. Joint toughness for any combination of composition and post-cure temperature depended only on the cracking rate. If the epoxy was the type that caused cracks to jump rapidly, the epoxy was tough and vice versa. For a particular epoxy system, toughness was increased by driving the crack at an increasing rate.

    Notes: The setting of textiles made from cellulosic materials can be done with swelling and deswelling processes. Standard cotton fibers, purified by extraction, have been set in sodium hydroxide solutions with and without additions of thiocyanate salts. Treatments have also been done in zinc chloride and calcium thiocyanate and in a solution of potassium hydroxide in a mixture of butanol and kerosene. After rinsing and drying of the cotton samples, KBr pellets for infrared investigations were produced. Deuteration of the fiber sample for investigation was made in a special apparatus. Single and differential infrared diagrams have been run with and without previous deuteration of the set cotton samples. The infrared maximum of absorption of the OH band changes as a result of the setting treatment. The infrared diagrams show that the setting treatment in alkaline solution gives a broadening of the OH band towards higher and lower wavelengths, which indicates a transfer of the hydrogen bonding energy both to higher and lower energies. The diagrams from the deuterated samples indicate that the strong hydrogen bonds resulting from the setting treatment are partly resistant to deuteration. The results are discussed on the basis of setting and setting reactions.

    Notes: The fatigue failure of natural rubber vulcanizates undergoing repeated low tensile deformations has been investigated. It is found that below a critical deformation the life is greatly influenced by the ozone concentration in the test atmosphere. This result was anticipated theoretically from previous studies of cut growth behavior, and the theory enables the combined effects of the two cut growth mechanisms - mechanicooxidative rupture and ozone scission - to be taken into account in predicting fatigue life.

    Notes: Young's modulus and the mechanical damping factor have been determined between -180 and +280°C. (at a frequency of several kilocycles), in samples of isotactic polypropylene, isotactic polystyrene, and trans-1,4-polybutadiene, subjected to pile irradiation (γ-rays and neutrons) at γ-doses from 90 to 4000 Mrad. In isotactic polypropylene no important structural changes are produced by the irradiation, except for a partial destruction of crystallinity. The samples receiving high radiation doses exhibit a low temperature loss region, which is attributed to the formation of a certain number of branches. Isotactic polystyrene shows very slight modifications of the dynamic mechanical properties at room temperature. At low temperature an increase of intensity of the δ relaxation phenomenon (probably due to oscillations of phenyl rings) with increasing radiation dose is observed. Important structural modifications produced by the radiation, destruction of crystallinity accompanied by crosslinking, which transform the material into a crosslinked rubber, are observed in trans-1,4-polybutadiene. Unlike conventional (sulfur) vulcanization, crosslinking by radiation does not cause a marked shift of the glass transition point. A secondary low-temperature relaxation effect, not existing in the unirradiated material, appears in the mechanical loss curves of the irradiated samples; it is attributed to the formation of —CH2—sequences in the main chains through saturation of C=C bonds. The mechanical spectrum of irradiated polybutadiene is very similar to those shown by crosslinked ethylene-butadiene copolymers.

    Notes: Capillary rheometry is used to characterize the thermal stability of poly(vinyl chloride). By isothermally extruding the polymer melt at constant shear rate, apparent viscosity-time relationships are obtained having three distinct regions: (1) obtainment of equilibrium viscosity, (2) constant viscosity, and (3) rapidly changing viscosity. During regions 2 and 3 the polymer extrudate gradually changes in color from water clear to black. These characteristic regions are related to the temperature of extrusion by Arrhenius plots. An activation energy of 40 kcal./g.-mole was calculated for the decomposition of PVC. Infrared spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis, and intrinsic viscosity experiments are used to corroborate the results of the melt flow data.

    Notes: The dynamic mechanical properties of titanium dioxide-filled poly(vinyl acetate) have been studied at filler concentrations of 0, 10, 20, 30, and 40 wt.-% TiO2 by using a torsional pendulum. The damping factor was found to increase with higher temperatures. At 40°C., the damping factors for the different TiO2 concentrations were estimated to be the same. Damping factors above 40°C. were difficult to obtain due to the rubbery nature of the TiO2-poly(vinyl acetate) systems. From 24 to 35°C., 10 wt.-% TiO2-poly(vinyl acetate) was closer in damping factor increase to unfilled poly(vinyl acetate) than to the higher TiO2-content polymers. At all temperatures, damping factors decreased with higher TiO2 concentration. As the temperature decreased to 0°C., damping factors for the filled systems approached a common value. Potential energy of filled systems as indicated by shear modulus values is increased by higher TiO2 concentrations and lower temperature. Kinetic energy for the filled systems, as shown by the out-of-phase modulus, is actually increased by larger filler concentration and higher temperature. A model is proposed where introduction of TiO2 filler acts to increase general long-range polymer chain stiffening and at the same time enables short-range chain mobility to rise, possibly through greater side-chain motion.

    Notes: Ultrasonic longitudinal wave velocities in layered materials were measured as a function of the lamination angle at several temperatures. It was found that the longitudinal wave velocity versus lamination angle curve maintains the same shape (for a given material) for temperatures between 25 and 125°C. Furthermore, it was found that the wave velocity versus lamination angle curve can be predicted to within 2% by a theoretical equation involving only the lamination angle, & thetas; (taken as the angle between the grain of the sample and the direction of sound propagation); c (0°), the measured wave velocity at an angle of 0°; and c (90°) the measured wave velocity at an angle of 90°. Finally, it was found that the longitudinal wave velocity of certain materials varies as much as 25% between lamination angles of 0° and 90°, while other materials show less variation, and some none at all.

    Notes: The tensile strengths of plastics with drilled holes can be analyzed by treating the hole as a nucleus in flaw generation. The analysis is accurate for hole diameters less than the inherent flaw size. Above this value the tensile strengths define a single curve when plotted on a reduced variable scale. Using the analysis in its linear range facilitates evaluation of the Griffith parameters. From such an application it was found that plasticizers markedly reduce the values of the Griffith parameters while affecting tensile strengths only slightly. Temperature has a similar effect.

    Notes: A linear polymer with a high melting point is obtained from the water-formaldehyde-hydrogen sulfide system in the presence of sulfuric acid. This polymer is substantially formed by a polythiomethylene chain with a few oxymethylene units. Its formation involves a topochemical reaction of the mercaptomethanol present in solution on the first separation solid of the system. On heating, the polymer loses oxymethylene units; in the same way, the first solid product separated from the system loses formaldehyde and undergoes a morphological and chemical transformation to polythiomethylene.

    Notes: The adsorption of sodium dodecyl sulfate on polystyrene-styrene interfaces has been studied. Polystyrene interfaces of 20 and 60% were considered. Initial surfactant concentrations used in the study were 0.0004, 0.0008, and 0.004 mole/l. Two temperature levels, 25 and 75°C., were studied. Results showed no effect of initial surfactant concentration for a 20% interface at 25°C. However, the data for the 60% interface at 25°C. showed an effect of initial surfactant concentration. The apparent anomaly in the results regarding effect of initial surfactant concentration was explained in terms of the behavior of polystyrene-styrene as a mixed absorbent and the work of Harkins and co-workers, which showed that surfactant adsorption was a function of initial surfactant concentration over certain concentration ranges. Rate of surfactant adsorption appeared to be a function of surfactant adsorption raised to a power. The order of the adsorption appeared to be first-order for the 20% interface and second-order for the 60% interface.

    Notes: In order to study structure-tissue reactivity relationships and ultimately develop a less necrotizing adhesive, this laboratory undertook a study of the synthesis and degradation of the homologous series of α-cyanoacrylate monomers and polymers. A method for synthesizing high purity cyanoacrylates and some of their chemical and physical properties and presented. In vitro kinetics studies under heterotgeneous and homogeneous conditions indicate that cyanoacrylate polymers degrade by hydrolytic scission of the polymer chain. The products resulting from such a scission are formaldehyde (positively identified by derivative formation) and ultimately and alkyl cyanoacetate. As the homologous series is ascended, the rate of degradation under neutral conditions decreases. In homogeneous solutions, under alkaline conditions, the ràte of degradation is considerably higher than under neutral conditions and the rates obtained with the methyl to the butyl derivative are of the same order. Aproposed mechanism of degradation is presented. Medical evaluation has indicated that as the homologous series is ascended, the greater the tissue tolerance to the monomers and polymers. The relevance of the results of the in vitro studies to this medical finding is presented.

    Notes: Rayon-styrene graft copolymers were prepared by the direct radiation method, with the use of the preswelling technique, by irradiation with γ-rays from 60Co. The grafting was carried out in bulk styrene and in styrene-solvent mixtures, such as styrene-methanol and styrene-acetone, to study their effect on the graft copolymerization reaction and the structure of the resulting graft copolymer. The effects of carbon tetrachloride, a chain-transfer agent, was also investigated. Three different types of rayon yarn were used; Fortisan, a modifier-type high wet-modulus rayon, and a high-tenacity tire yarn, in order to study the effect of rayon microstructure on the grafting reaction. The molecular structure of the rayon-styrene graft copolymers was studied by hydrolyzing away the cellulose backbone and measuring the molecular weights of the grafted polystyrene branches. For grafting in bulk styrene, the molecular weights of the grafted polystyrene ranged from 400,000 to 1,000,000, while those of the polystyrene homopolymer formed in the outside solution were of the order of 30,000-50,000. The molecular weights of the grafted polystyrene branches tended to increase with per cent grafting in the graft copolymer. For grafting in styrene-methanol and styrene-acetone mixtures, the molecular weights of the polystyrene branches decreased with increasing solvent content. The addition of carbon tetrachloride to bulk styrene resulted in a sharp decrease in the molecular weights of the grafted branches. The grafting frequency or number of polystyrene branches per cellulose chain was calculated from the per cent grafting and the molecular weights of the polystyrene branches. The morphology of the rayon-styrene graft copolymers and some of their physical properties are discussed.

    Notes: An integral equation taking account of the limited resolution of the chromatographic columns is given to relate the gel permeation chromatogram and the true molecular weight distribution function. Three approaches to solve the integral equation are described. The first approach provides a special solution for the log-normal molecular weight distribution function; the other two approaches give two numerical solutions for general distribution functions. The use of these solutions in the treatment of gel permeation chromatography data is discussed.

    Notes: New methods for the treatment of cotton with acrylamide have been studied which permit the preparation of modified fabrics with relatively high degrees of carboxyethyl substitution. Wet treatment with acrylamide and sodium hydroxide can be used to produce cottons bearing both carboxyethyl and carbamoylethyl ether substituents. Adjustment of reaction conditions controls the amount and ratio of these substituents. The effects of varying the concentrations of the reactants, the time and the temperature of reaction, and the solvent media employed have been determined. Some elucidation of the chemical mechanisms is provided. Previous work has shown that dry heat treatments of cotton impregnated with acrylamide and alkali can be used to produce high carbamoylethyl substitutions with little or no carboxyethyl substitution. The present work provides an extension of the cotton-acrylamide treatment whereby fabrics can be produced with only carboxyethyl or carbamoylethyl groups, or with mixtures of the two.

It undergoes irreversible thermal changes above about 80°C., but if heated quickly, it can be oriented to give greater strength parallel to the direction of orientation. Some improvement in strength can be achieved by the use of fibrous fillers. Certain copolymers are stronger than the homopolymer but have lower softening temperatures.

    Notes: Dielectric constant and loss of poly(vinyl alcohol) films of different stereoregularity and crystallinity are measured at frequencies from 30 cps to 3 Mcps in the temperature range from -50 to 25°C. The relaxation strength of local mode relaxation is higher for atactic and syndiotactic samples than for isotactic samples when compared at zero crystallinity. This behavior is reasonably explained in terms of interchain hydrogen bonds in the former and intrachain hydrogen bonds in the latter. Dielectric constant and loss of the crystal aggregate of atactic poly(vinyl alcohol) are measured at temperatures from -50 to 140°C. The relaxation strength of the crystalline relaxation is in good agreement with the theory in which the relaxation is attributed to torsional vibration of crystalline chains. The weak loss peak at low temperatures which almost agrees with the local mode relaxation of bulk samples in the frequency-temperature position is ascribed to the surface disorder of single crystals.

    Notes: Directional dependence of the PMR-narrow-band in oriented fibers of nylon 66, poly(vinyl alcohol), and cotton has been investigated to study the orientation of hydrogen bonds in the unit cell. Filaments of oriented fibers were conditioned to 75% relative humidity, then aligned together axially and packed in a teflon tube. The teflon tube was suspended in the NMR probe in such a manner that the fiber axis was horizontal and could be rotated to a desired angle with respect to the magnetic field. Variation of the narrow-band line width as a function of the angle between the fiber axis and the magnetic field-direction shows a minimum at 0° orientation for nylon 66 and PVA, but in the case of cotton it shows a minimum at about 80° orientation. This indicates that in the case of nylon 66 and PVA, hydrogen bonds are oriented nearly prependicular to the chain axis. This would suggest that nylon 66 and PVA have interchain hydrogen bonding, but the hydrogen bonds contributing to directional dependence, in the case of cotton fiber, are intrachain. The interchain hydrogen bonds between the lateral chains, if they exist, must be random and, therefore, do not contribute to directional dependence. The interchain H bonds between central and corner chains are probably oriented in such a way that the horizontal component of p-p vectors have nearly the same orientation in the unit cell as the p-p vectors of the intrachain hydrogen bonds.

    Notes: Thermal diffusivity, thermal conductivity, and specific heat per unit volume were measured for the following polymers: poly(ethylene terephthalate), polytetrafluoroethylene, polycarbonate, polypropylene, and three poly(vinyl chloride) samples plasticized to different levels. First- and second-order transitions can be identified and located by the following features in the thermal property-temperature curves: discontinuities, sharp inflections, broad inflections, sharp maxima, broad maxima, and change in linear slope. The results for poly(vinyl chloride) indicate the possibility of the use of plasticizer to control the thermal insulation properties of polymers, both for steady-state and unsteady-state conduction.

    Notes: As one in a series of studies relating the rheological behavior of mechanical mixtures of two polymer components to the degree of mixing, the tensile stress relaxation behavior of a graft copolymer of poly(vinyl acetate) with styrene, obtained by 60Co γ-irradiation of poly(vinyl acetate) in styrene solution and extraction of homopolymers, was investigated as a function of the fraction of styrene component and compared with that of a mechanical mixture of poly(vinyl acetate) with polystyrene, one of the typical combinations of incompatible components. The results obtained may classify the graft copolymer as a sort of mechanical mixture giving stable mixing even for incompatible components.

    Notes: The abrasion characteristics of low-twist polypropylene multi-filament yarns free of surface lubricants were determined by rubbing the yarns against each other by using a reciprocating action device at a frequency of 60 cycles/min. It was found that the abrasion behavior of the yarns varies over a wide range and is related to such fundamental properties as the polymer and fiber molecular weight, undrawn fiber orientation and crystalline structure, drawn fiber properties, and elevated temperature post-treatment. It was also found that presence of surface lubricants could increase the number of abrasion cycles to failure by as much as a factor of 20, depending upon the particular lubricant employed. The mechanism of the process of fiber failure resulting from abrasion damage was examined and appears to be one in which the fiber rupture is preceded by a tearing and peeling back of fiber surface fragements probably initiated at flaws in the fiber surface.

    Notes: The breaking times of two crosslinked epoxy polymers under constant stresses were found to decrease at high temperature and humidity. The effect of humidity is, in terms of Bueche's theory, to increase the jump frequency of the polymer segments and to reduce the number of polymer units in cooperative motion in a jump process. When two epoxy polymers with different segment mobilities are compared at a given temperature, the stress-breaking time relationship shifts toward longer times for the polymer with the higher transition temperature. The relation is also applicable in the presence of absorbed water molecules.

    Notes: A technique has been developed which provides a means for estimating polypropylene fractionation conditions in an elution column from a knowledge of the fractionation conditions used to fractionate linear polyethylene in the column and the solution behavior of both polymers in the same solvent-nonsolvent system of varying compositions. The fusion behavior of linear polyethylene and isotactic polypropylene in mixtures of o-di-chlorobenzene and dimethyl phthalate of varying compositions has been studied by a differential thermal analysis (DTA) technique using concentrations similar to those in an elution fractionation column. The column temperature for fractionating each of these polymers by using o-dichlorobenzene and dimethyl phthalate as the solvent and nonsolvent, respectively, was determined from their melting temperatures in dimethyl phthalate. On the basis of the equivalence of the fractional depression in solution temperature of each polymer in the binary liquid mixture, the composition range of solvent-nonsolvent mixtures to be used in fractionating polypropylene was estimated from a knowledge of the polyethylene fractionation conditions together with the DTA data. Although separation depends primarily on molecular weight, the equivalence in fractional solution temperature depression provides a convenient means of correlating fractionation conditions for the polyolefins investigated.

    Notes: Membranes prepared from 5% Parlodion solution have been characterized. These and other membranes prepared from 0.38, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0% Parlodion solutions and already characterized, have been used severally to estimate the number of anionic sites present in them by two different methods. The potentiometric method, which is indirect, gave values of X̄P which were higher than X̄T, the values obtained by a direct isotopic method. The order was reversed for well-characterized ion-exchange membranes. These discrepancies were attributed to the shortcomings of the Teorell, Meyer, and Sievers theory of membrane potentials from which the potentiometric method was derived.

    Notes: Rates of oxidation in oxygen at 140°C. of natural rubber gum vulcanizates containing PBNA as inhibitor have been compared. They are a function of sulfur combined with the rubber, and only slightly affected by curing system for sulfur alone, TMTD sulfurless, and very high-efficiency sulfenamide plus dithiocarbamate-accelerated compositions. Addition of diphenylguanidine to simple sulfur vulcanizates causes much faster oxidation. No conclusions about oxidation mechanism can be drawn from rates of oxidation alone.

    Notes: A method for assessing extent of swelling of the gel fraction of formaldehyde-modified cottons, employing cupriethylenediamine hydroxide as the swelling agent, is described. Substantial differences in apparent specific volumes of swollen gel fractions are observed for cottons crosslinked by different processes to the same level of agent. The apparent crosslink density measured by the swelling of gel fraction increases with formaldehyde content of the cotton; at 0.20% formaldehyde the order of increasing crosslink density in the various processes of reaction is as follows: nonaqueous system (forms D and D′) 〈 aqueous system (forms W and W′) 〈swelling system (form F) 〈 vapor system (form V) 〈 bake-cure system (form C).

    Notes: Some Physical, chemical, and solution properties of polyethylene prepared by emulsion polymerization are described and compared with those of conventional high-pressure polymer. The emulsion polymers contain an unusually large amount of low molecular weight material for the solution viscosities they exhibit. It is this low molecular weight material that contributes to the characteristic low elongation of the emulsion polymer, as well as to its wide distribution of molecular weights. The effect of changes in recipe and in conditions of polymerization on these properties is discussed. It is shown that some of the emulsifier present during polymerization becomes part of the polymer chain.
