    Description: The abundance, distribution and structure of the zooplankton community in southern Patagonia (SW Atlantic Ocean) were studied during late summer (March-April 2000) from samples obtained with Nackthai (390 ~km) and Multinet (150 ~km) samplers. Total concentrations of zooplankton biomass, integrated in the water column, ranged between 1.0 and 14.5 g m-2 (dry weight) and reached the highest values in the mid and outer shelf off Bahía Grande (Santa Cruz Prov., Argentina) (51~'S). The 〈 5 mm size fraction, composed mainly of copepods represented, on average, 45% of the total; amphipods and euphausiids accounted for 20% and 31%, respectively. Amphipods were, almost exclusively, Themisto gaudichaudii and euphausiids most abundant species Euphausia lucens and Thysanoessa gregaria. Drepanopus forcipatus, Calanus australis and Oithona spp. constituted the dominant copepods with high abundance of the first in the whole area that represented, on average, 85% of the total mesozooplankton. The maximum abundances of Drepanopus forcipatus, recorded in outer waters of Bahía Grande, showed a noticeable decrease towards the inner area and to the north of the bay. C. australis and Oithona spp. concentrations, although much lower, distributed more homogeneously within the whole study area. The distribution of the different populations in the water column varied according to the species: D. forcipatus and Oithona spp. concentrated mainly in the upper layers down to ca. 50 m; C. australis was found between that depth and near the bottom. Copepods populations were dominated by late copepodids.

    Description: The "bacalao austral" is a typical fish from the cold water of the Southwest Atlantic and the Southeastern Pacific oceans, whose fishery has not yet developed. In this work, the structure of the concentration areas of summer and winter distribution and other biological items were analyzed, basing on data provening from R/V"Walther Herwig" and R/V"Shinkai Maru", which operated in these waters during 1978/79/. The trophic vertical migrations are common in this species.

    Description: The Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone and the problem of the hake catch quota allocation. The aim of this paper is to present the problem of the catch quota in the shared zone and the proposals related to the maximum catch from 1976 to 1998. The state of the population which inhabits the Common Fishing Zone and north of 41°S is diagnosed, concluding that the total biomass has declined in this period and the spawning stock biomass is under the allowable biological catches. In addition, the catch per unit effort (CPUE)of the commercial fleet has a declining tendency and the total effort is duplicated. Biological population characteristics are presented: reproduction, feeding, nursery grounds and closed areas to protect juveniles. Proportional allocations for the shared zone and for the area between 39° 30´S and 41° S are estimated. The current framework reference to define the maximum catch for the northern hake stock is considered.

    Description: This paper is based on the study of 484 specimens collected off three different districts of Santa Cruz (Caleta Olivia, Puerto Deseado and Río Gallegos)and the northern coastal region of Malvinas Islands. The following items have been developed: -a brief description of the clupeoids present in the southern patagonic area where the sardine lives, and a key to their identification; -the updated systematic position of the species and its bibliographical references; -a description of the external morphology; -a statistical analysis of morphometric and meristic character; and geographic distribution and movements. It is possible to presume the existence of two geographically separated groups, one in the coasts off Santa Cruz Province and another around Malvinas Islands.

    Description: The Patagonian cod (Salilota australis) inhabits the SW Atlantic from 38°S up to 55°S, as well as the Pacific Ocean from 40°S up to 57°S. The annual catches of this species by both the Argentine fleet and those operating around the Malvinas Islands have significantly increased during the decade 1990-2000, peaking to 16,556 t in 1996. After this, a marked decrease in landings was noticed, and during 2003 the catch was 7,924 t. Seasonal distribution, concentration grounds, and population structure of the Patagonian cod from the Argentine Sea are described, and the mean densities of the species are seasonally related to latitude, temperature and depth, on the basis of data from surveys carried out by the INIDEP research vessels in 1992 and 1993. Highest mean densities showed to move from spring to winter according to both latitudes (southwards) and depth (towards deeper waters). No sea bottom temperature (SBT) data corresponding to fall were available, but it was clear that main concentrations of cod during the other seasons were related to SBT of 5 °C, and a little more tolerance was found during the summer. Within the studied area, mainly adult fish were caught (〉 72%), and the most frequent sizes were recorded into the range of 38-54 cm total length. Sex ratio was close to 1:1 almost all over the year, except during the fall, when males represented 61%. Near mature juveniles (sized 27-38 cm) were present throughout the year, and percentages in the samples were highest at 55°S lat. during winter. Juveniles close to be one year old (14-17 cm) were found during the winter season, at 55°S lat. and 166 m depth.

    Description: A study was made on numercial and biomass variations of the zooplankton of the San Jorge Gulf (Argentina), based on samples from five cruises performed during 1985. The sampling was included within a proagramme for the biology and fishery evaluation of the shrimp Pleoticus muelleri. San Jorge, a large gulf of the northern patagonian shelf, comprises major fishery activities. Some fish species of economical importance depend on copepods for their feeding, like anchovy (Engraulis anchoita)or partially on middle-size plankters, like mackerel (Scomber japonicus). As a way for determining the trophic disponibility at the gulf, a study was made in order to express the numerical abundance of copepods, euphausiids and amphipods and other items of lesser importance, as well as their total biomass.

    Description: To evaluate absolute biomass, a research cruise was conducted on three scallop (Zygochlamys patagonica)beds (38°S-56°W, September 1998). The estimated bed surface was 1,162 nm(2). Sampling stations were regularly spaced at 5 nm intervals. A total of 118 trawls were performed with a non-selective dredge 2,5 m wide (efficiency 16-21. ). Trawls duration and speed were 10 minutes and 3 nm.h(-1)respectively. Samples were taken to estimate total and commercial (greater or equal than 55 mm total height)scallop weight and size frequency distribution. Coefficients of variation (CV)of the estimated biomass were calculated for each bed using geoestatistical techniques and a simple random sampling alternative with the same number of samples. The CVs for total scallop biomass as estimated in the three beds using geostatistical techniques were 50,8. , 20,5. and 5,6. lower than the respective CVs obtained using a simple random design-based alternative. In the case of commercial scallop biomass, the reduction in the CVs was 51,4. , 20,5. and 5,6. , respectively. An important decrease in the associated uncertainty in biomass estimation of the three beds was found using a geoestatistical approach instead of the randomized sampling alternative. Given the spatial distribution and sedentary characteristic of Z. patagonica, once detected, grounds are particularly vulnerable to overfishing. Thus, reliable biomass estimates and precise maps of commercial and non commercial individual densities are useful tools to define sustainable management strategies.

    Description: The current status of southern blue whiting Micromesistius australis stock is described. A single, closed fish population is assumed to inhabit the SW Atlantic. Based on catch data corresponding to years 1987-1997, a sequential analysis on the stock is carried out (Cohort Analysis). Under an adaptative framework, catch per unit of effort data from commercial vessels are used to fit the model. Two commercial fleets are used in the fitting, i.e. Polish vessels (1987-1994)and Argentine surimi factory vessels (1991-1997). Results indicate that both, total stock biomass and spawning stock biomass would have declined. Total biomass would have decreased from a maximum close to 1.4 million tons in 1990 down to 0.5 mt in 1997 whereas the current spawning stock biomass would be 30 below the virgin spawning stock biomass. Recruitment also showed a decreasing trend to become extremely poor by the last part of the period. That seems to be the main cause of the stock biomass decrease although the exploitation rate is relatively high (0.60)and the current fishing mortality (0.22)above the biological reference points (F(30)=0.20)and much higher than the one considered as management objective (F(0.1)=0.14). Simulation trials were performed to project the future evolution of stock and catches under three different exploitation levels (no fishing; fishing under F(0.1); fishing under F(1997)). Whatever the exploitation level, if recruitment maintained its current status, the stock would suffer a sharp decrease to stabilize at very low abundance levels. In the short term, projections forecast a remarkable decrease of catches for 1998 that, even at the effort level exerted at present, would be over 73 thousand tons. Considering the current status of the stock, a series of measures to be applied in the short term are suggested. Such measures include a 35 reduction of the effort exerted in 1997 to limit fishing mortality to the F(0.1)=0.14 reference point and promotion of parallel actions by Argentina and the United Kingdom to achieve recovery of the resource.

    Description: Catch records of flatfishes obtained in exploratory cruises and in the existing literature in the geographical area between 34°S and 55°S in the Western SOuth Atlantic were analyzed to elaborate maps of the distribution of the most common flatfish species in this area. Data from commercial fleet landings at Mar del Plata Harbor were used to analyze the distribution and areas of resource concentration. The flatfish most frequently found in this study area belong to three families: 1. Paralichthidae, with the species: Thysanopsetta naresi, Paralichthys orbignyanus, Paralichthys patagonicus, Paralichthys isoceles, Xystreurys rasile. 2.-Pleuronectidae, with the species: Oncopterus darwini. 3. Achiropsettidae with: Mancopsetta maculata, Mancopsetta milfordi, Achiropsetta tricholepsis. Flatfish landings in the Mar del Plata Harbor vary seasonnally according to the catches of hake, mackerel or anchovy and depend upon the strata of the fleet analyzed. CPUE (t/HP/hours)data indicate two large areas of concentration in the bonaerense continental shelf, one between 35° -38°S and the other between 39° -40°S.
