    Description: This monograph deals with Polish foreign policy shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War. In tracing the diplomatic activity of foreign minister Józef Beck, it discusses six general problems: (1) the Polish political situation under the pressure of appeasement; (2) the project of Intermarium and efforts to implement it; (3) the action against Czechoslovakia and the conflict with the Soviet Union; (4) the Polish attitude towards the German concept of Gesamtlosung in Germany’s relations with Poland; (5) the genesis of the Polish alliance with Great Britain; (6) the Allies’ military inaction after Nazi Germany’s aggression. In these conditions, Poland made four key decisions: it stood against Czechoslovakia, it rejected German demands, it allied itself with the United Kingdom, and it rejected the Soviet Union’s claim for the Red Army to march across Polish lands.

Dabei gehen sie weit über den traditionellen mitteleuropäischen Forschungsrahmen hinaus und untersuchen Beispiele revolutionärer Erhebungen in Süd- und Osteuropa ebenso wie die Entwicklungen auf dem amerikanischen Kontinent.     Description: The book provides an empirically based analysis of changes on how various political and denominational actors seek to influence the Church and state relationship, as well as how we understand the idea of the secular state. A set of case studies shows how and why changes in the coverage of the secular state and Church-state relations have followed the dynamics of media logic. By establishing a grounded theory based on media content, legal regulations and political party programs in the years 1989–2015 as well as a current survey, the author throws new light on the theory of mediatization. The book demonstrates that the disseminated idea of the secular state is largely a result of the adaptation of both political and religious representatives to a dynamically changing media logic.     Description: Comment expliquer la popularité du football à l’échelle européenne ? Une des pistes pour répondre à cette question est d’étudier le rôle de l’Union des associations européennes de football (UEFA) qui n’a eu de cesse d’agir en vue de renforcer les échanges footballistiques au niveau européen. À partir du dépouillement d’archives inédites, ce livre répond à un vide historiographique en proposant de retracer la genèse et la formation de l’UEFA dans une perspective globale et qui privilégie le long terme. Nous défendons ici la thèse que la mise en place de cette organisation au milieu des années 1950 est un tournant dans l’histoire du football européen. Trois axes principaux complémentaires sont développés tout au long de cet ouvrage. Le premier traite du rôle de la FIFA (Fédération internationale de football association), puis de l’UEFA dans le développement d’une dynamique européenne du jeu. Le deuxième questionne la possibilité qu’ont les dirigeants du football de créer un organisme qui transcende les barrières de la Guerre froide (à sa fondation, l’UEFA compte une trentaine de pays européens). Finalement, le troisième interroge les raisons de la constitution de l’UEFA durant les années 1950 ainsi que le modèle d’organisation choisi par ses promoteurs.

    Description: Between 1919 and 1920, the eastern territories of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth were temporarily administered by the Civic Management of Eastern Territories, established by Józef Piłsudski. The residents of the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania were to determine their future governance. Piłsudski placed the Civic Management outside the structures of the Polish government, while his opponents from the Polish nationalist wing wanted to suborn it to the government in Warsaw. Based on hitherto unknown archival documents, the author describes the reasons for the failure of Piłsudski’s federation idea, both on the Polish side, as well as errors by Belarusian leaders and the policy of the Lithuanian state.

    Description: Die erste Begegnung mit dem Werk Maurice Merleau-Pontys ist zumeist von Faszination geprägt; einer Faszination, die sich sowohl aus dem äußerst vielfältigen Themenspektrum als auch aus einer gewissen Dunkelheit in Detailfragen speist. Die bei Merleau-Ponty auf unterschiedlichste Weise miteinander verflochtenen Untersuchungen zur Psychologie, Philosophie, Literatur und Kunst werden in Interpretationen seines Werkes jedoch zumeist auf nur eine Dimension reduziert. Dieses Buch hingegen beruht auf der Annahme, dass die Vielfältigkeit und Ambiguität des Menschen die Grundlage von Merleau-Pontys Philosophie bilden. Indem die Widersprüche und Vieldeutigkeiten seiner Gedanken nicht als Makel gesehen, sondern zum Ausgangspunkt der Analyse erhoben werden, kann die Themenvielfalt seines Werkes sowie das Zusammenspiel der verschiedenen Disziplinen gewürdigt werden. Im Zentrum der Betrachtungen stehen dabei zwei Phänomene, welche als die zentralen Themen seiner Philosophie gesehen werden können: die Wahrnehmung und der Ausdruck. Diese beiden Begriffe machen es möglich, das Verhältnis der menschlichen Existenz zur Welt zu beschreiben; zugleich hilft ihre Betrachtung dabei, die Philosophie Merleau-Pontys in ihrem faszinierenden Facettenreichtum verständlich zu machen.

    Description: This book examines the processes of symbolic cultivation of identity promoted by Armenian cultural elites in the Bulgarian city of Plovdiv, focusing on the transmission of positive language ideologies and emotional elements related to collective memory. Drawing on extensive ethnographic fieldwork, interviews, and a range of primary materials, this work sheds light on the role of the Armenian alphabet in legitimizing collective visions of ‘distinctiveness’ and of the Armenian Genocide remembrance in shaping non-exclusive, transnational patterns of belonging. While contributing to the study of the complex dynamics and challenges of ‘Armenian survival’ across space and time, it situates the issue in the unique context of Bulgaria, analyzing, moreover, the impact of proximity to Turkey.
